HELLO

This portfolio shows the selection of my most relevant works, as a student and as an architect. I graduated in 2014 with thesis New (de) Limitations in the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Mackenzie University, in São Paulo, Brazil. While studying, I worked in three offices, with completely different focuses, from installations and store designs to urban planning. After graduation I collaborated with Sergio Sampaio Office for two and a half years, working in projects of residences, social housing and high rise buildings. The big range of programs, scales and ways of practice was great for my formation as an architect. Since my first contact with architecture, I’ve always been instigated by the impact of the architecture in people. The fact that architecture could reinvent, improve or transform the relationship between people and its surrounding world was always intriguing and motivating for me. Now I’m really interest in working abroad Brazil, to have new experiences by the approximation with a new culture and its processes, materials, techniques and approaches to design and people.

MIDIA LIBRARY This study was designed as a part of an urban planning with the main goals of redevelop, reconnection and recognization in one of the most important avenues of SĂŁo Paulo, in a central neighbourhood of the city. The avenue was built covering an old river in 1950 during a period of many politics in favour of the expansion of roads in Brazil. Nowadays the place is decayed and dangerous, putting many urban decisions in doubt. This project was part of a bigger project with a range of actions in the whole neighbourhood. The plot is an important corner on the avenue, thus, one of the main strategies was keep the ground floor open to public transit. To improve and spread the flow of people, the ground floaor was divided in two levels. This gesture also was a way to overcome the uneven ground. The project has two sides, and both aim for bringing new dynamics for the area and the people. Relating to the city, the project creates a strong building and point of reference, which could bring life and new dynamics to the area.

The main program is a midia library, a lacking program in Brazil and in the area, and a kind of program that brings people to the area in a interesting and healty way. Besides, keeping in mind the interest in dynamics and relations with and between people, the project proposes relations in a space through its emptiness. The design of the void allows people to have a visual relationship between each other in different floors of the building. The space became more interesting and creative.

NEW (DE) LIMITATIONS This is my project and thesis of graduation. The project became the foundation of my thoughts and interests within the architecture practise. Through 1 year of work, we had to propose and create a project and its conceptual basis, so the big challenge was the link between the practise and the theory.

The present epoch will perhaps be above all the epoch of space. We are in the epoch of simultaneity: we are in the epoch of juxtaposition, the epoch of the near and far, of the side-by-side, of the dispersed. We are at a moment, I believe, when our experience of the world is less that of a long life developing through time than that of a network that connects points and intersects with its own skein Des Espace Autres, Michel Foucault

Because of Sao Paulo characteristics, the chosen goal was to articulate the city with its citizens, thru their respective scales – macro and micro. So the project starts as a way to research and understand this relationship between people and city. And it develops as an architectural support to boost this relationship, bringing a new kind of sociability. The plot was chosen because of these ideas. It is a narrow plot in front of an big public square, in an old neighbourhood of São Paulo. The big flow of people through out day and night in the square and the whole neighbourhood presented a big opportunity to study both scales - micro and macro - and its relationship.

As a proposition, the idea of the free flow in the ground floor would give to the people a main role in the relationship with the space. This engagement is crucial to intigate the kind of relatinship that the project was looking for. At the same time, it was an opportunity to connect the two sides of the plot, and create a link in the macro scale.

The idea of freedom of use was applied throughout the whole project, always aiming for the engagement of its users. The ground floor rethinked as a void would separate the two main programs, the more public and generous below and the more privative and controlled above. The endless points of view created by this disposition allowed a variety of new perceptions in the users, deepening the relationship with the spaces. 19

The design solutions followed the main ideas and goals. In the undergrounds, the voids became the relation with the exterior, they would bring light and air into the spaces. Articulated light shelfs and big glass windows facing the voids, garantee a confortable interior and the aimed visual conections with the other parts of the project. The necessity of sunlight protection for the exterior facades created a possibility to apply the same ideals of engagement by new and different perspectives. The inclinated sufaces that would protect the inside and its metal strctures would create two different facades, depending from where they were seen.

MONTCALM INDUSTRY

This design was made by the Sergio Sampaio Office, in which I was working as an architect. The client is a supplier of machineries and manufacturer of construction parts to big projects. The main idea was to make a revitalization of the existing sheds of the company, by reusing the old fencings made of pre-cast concrete and using their own manufactures, such as the metal structure, and CLT curved panels. The intention was to create an industrial, functional and economic project, which would present the company by using its own materials and products and take advantage of this aesthetic.

LOFT IGLOO 44 This project was made in 2015. The client was in his late twenties and was aiming for a place with contemporary design but with a restrict budget. Being an apartment of 56 m², the big challenge was to use the space in the most effective way, so the feeling would be of a clear and generous home. The interior took advantage of raw and honest materials, like concrete and wood to create a smooth, airy and clear space, without decorative excesses. In addition, the lighting solutions were made for the ceiling to get the feeling of continuity and uniqueness.

JM HOUSE This project was developed by Sergio Sampaio Office, in in which I was part of the team of the architects. It’s a single family house in a really big plot, with an unevenness of 8.00 m from one side to the other. The project would have to be eminently single storey and attend to accessibility standards, because of the family members. The main functions of the house - social, leisure and intimate - are distributed in a single prismatic volume that rests subtly to the terrain through metallic pillars. The service and garage sectors are located below the main volume occupying the emptiness coming from the natural unevenness of the terrain. At the same time as the facades of the volume presents it as a “closed box to its surroundings, the large patio inside makes the visual integration of the interiors and allows the entrance of light and circulation of air. The big effort was use industrialized and dry construction systems - CLT panels and metal structure. Even though we struggled with the team of skilled labour, the construction resulted in a cleaner and more streamlined plot. It was a great challenge for our team. This project is important for all of us because its process was a kind of laboratory to study about how to implement new materials in our designs. 33

INC TOWER This design was the first tower building developed by Sergio Sampaio Office. This was a big challenge for the team and a great opportunity. The metal structure had to be carefully design in order to be adapted to the budget, most of it was hidden, but some parts appear and give the building it’s face. The floorplans and the role of the structure create together a more humanized space for work, going in the opposite direction to the traditional mirrored-plan with double skin facades of glass located in most regions of São Paulo. Our proposal of pre-cast or industrialized materials had big advantages as a construction method. It allowed a dry and fast construction and the best use of the site which was very narrow. The project will be finished at the end of July of 2017. 39

MUSEUM OF SEXUAL DIVERSITY

This project was for competition for the New Museum of Sexual Diversity in São Paulo. The main goal of the project was to create a new building to host the new museum, in the same site of an old mansion at Paulista Ave. The mansion is protected by the National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute of Brazil, so we had to understand and try to express through design the complexity of the old and the new working together as the museum. I participated in almost all steps of the project, from the conception to graphic products and technical design. The 3D modelling and rendering were made by another member of the team.

SOCIAL HOUSING IN BRASILIA

This project was a public competition entry for a new social housing in Brasilia. I participated as an architect on Sergio Sampaio Office. Our design was based on creating economic living units that would allow the appropriation of the space by its inhabitants. The quality and aesthetics of the units and the block were thought as a relation with the context and with its future appropriations. The project focuses on placing the program on the limits of the lot, to create green multipurpose yards, where kids can play securely while being watched out from every program unit. The yard-like blocks bring privacy and a sense of community at the same time within the complex.
