Neighbourhood House Essen The semester began in an unprecedented situation for everyone involved. The streets suddenly became quieter, the own thoughts louder and a kind of reflection took place. A return to the people, things and activities that are most important to us, that are close to our hearts. For many it was certainly unusual and difficult to show openness and closeness in a situation like this, where such qualities suddenly became an immediate danger. The community of the place, which Ferdinand Tönnies calls the neighborhood, starts playing a special role as well. So being able to deal with the situation under the theme of the „neighborhood house“ even during one‘s studies drew straightforward connections to one‘s own everyday life. A place of community and gathering was to be created for the former miners of Zeche 12 in Essen and residents who had settled there. Etymologically, the word „Nachgebuhr“ („post-booking“) once stood for the nearest farmer in the area. Today, the neighborhood is defined on a larger scale and like friendship, is more freely selectable due to the density of the cities. Walter Siebel equips the neighborhood with two expressive and accurate indicators. For him it is inescapable and conflictual. But he also names important components of a functioning community. Above all, he places habits of gathering, customs which act as supports, in front. In addition, he is also convinced that privacy and distance norms should be respected. From empirically collected impressions this can hardly be contradicted. Every good community needs space to thrive.

Public Condenser Belval
In the middle of an urban development a social meeting place for the public had to be created. The setting for this was the former industrial site of Belval (Luxembourg). In recent years, the site has also attracted a great deal of public attention through projects planned by prominent architecture officesv. In order to fit in well with the location, the design is based abstractly on Belval‘s historical past. This should be reflected not only conceptually but also in the materiality. The idea of relating the given spatial structures to the development process from raw material to end product resulted from the steel production that was created on site. More precisely, this meant shaping a heterogeneous material into a homogeneous one. The same applies to spatial planning in the design. The idea of a forming process is transferred to the building: from bottom to top the spatial arrangements become clearer and more defined.

Quartier at the Station Trier
The former rolling mill site and the area east of the railroad station in Trier were previously mainly industrial and commercial areas. In terms of development, both areas also had their own functional Historical raison d‘être. However, over the years, many of the building subtstance previously used have become less interesting for companies. For a further development of both quarters a rethinking of the current situation was inevitable. The task definition took the point of sustainability concretely with guiding idea „City of short distances“. The guideline defined the goal of developing any relevant local supply within 20 minutes exclusively with environmentally friendly means of transport. The car as the main means of transport lost weight in the logical reversal through the direct connection to all functions of the different areas of life. Dealing with the stock and the special requirements for the uses made the situation very special. For us unusual but at the same time refreshingly revealing was also the reference to reality that we were able to experience, among other things, at the meeting of the citizens‘ initiative. Thus, not only the own value systems flowed into the decision-making process, but also concrete needs. The project was developed in a group work with two other students.

Accomodation For a Chiroptera In order to be able to adjust to the specific resident, it was important to extract as much information as possible that was relevant to our project. We had the great luck to be able to ask biologist Dr. Andreas Kiefer questions about the bat box in an interview. Thanks to his experience alone, we were able to make important decisions regarding the design. Necessary basic conditions for the successful accommodation were for example an approach surface, an opening of approx. 3cm and furthermore a sufficient height. The design is based on the natural habitat of the bat: a cave. Many species like an additional belly and back contact in the hanging position, which is why it made sense to taper the housing upwards to provide a comfortable place for each animal.

Quattropole Magazine In order to strengthen the cohesion during the semester and to simulate an approach to our future in everyday working life, we were assigned to create a magazine during the first semester. This was printed in several hundred editions at the end of the process and distributed in the city to interested readers. The whole thing was financed solely by advertising placements and dealt with the federation of cities, but also contained mainly architectural approaches. As an editor, I was able to gain first insights into the management of situations, and through this, I was able to build lasting and cordial connections with my comillitons.
