FROM THE EDITOR BROADEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE HORIZON! Have you heard the old joke about the drunk who was looking for his keys under a street light since it was brighter there ( he should have been searching where he had dropped them!),but the lesson here is that he could provide some inspiration. Things are sometimes not here we expect them to be, and can turn up in the oddest places- inspiration, for one. For example, A German general once drew inspiration for faster troop transit, by observing how quickly a circus could load and unload its equipment off train. the key is to always be on the lookout for that unrelated bit of inspirational knowledge. That being said, this month WONDERFUL MALAYSIA magazine, we hope, will give you guys inspiration to travel and broaden perspective. this month also we would like to share few info and information about the city, island and food of Malaysia. So dig deep into WONDERFUL MALAYSIA magazine and broaden your perspective Lukas Brice Editor of WONDERFUL MALAYSIA

PANGKOR ISLAND

The name of the island comes from the Thai ‘Pang Ko’, which means Beautiful Island. It actually concerns a group of islands with Pangkor as its main island, and next to that a trio of smaller islands: Pangkor Laut, Pulau Mentagor en Pulau Giam. Pangkor Laut is the best known of these, because of the idyllic resort you can find on this small island (with similar name; Pangkor Laut Resort ). Pangkor is a mountainous island; the highest point is at 1216 meters (Pangkor Hill).

Since the main island consists of just mountains, the roads are lying in a circle around the island. The island has a number of international hotels/resorts; it can get quite busy during school and public holidays. There is no real best time to visit Pangkor; as the island is pretty much shielded by Sumatra, weather is pretty much the same throughout the year (though it still is a tropical island).

LAKE KENYIR

Lake Kenyir is the biggest lake of Malaysia and this popular attraction is located within the state of Terengganu. Among people that visit the beautiful lake are locals, anglers, golfers and companies that organize their teambuilding activities. Lake Kenyir is the biggest manufactured (man-made) lake in Southeast Asia.

The freshwater lake was constructed between 1978 and 1985 to provide for a dam to generate electricity and to bring a halt to the yearly flooding. Kenyir borders the popular National Park Taman Negara; you can travel from Kenyir to Taman Negara (vice versa), but this is no easy trip as it takes several days and can only be done with an experienced guide.

MATAKING ISLAND

Mataking Island consists of two islands, the bigger Mataking Besar and the smaller Mataking Kecil. Mataking is located to the southeast of Sabah, close to the Philippine border. It is the ultimate destination for honeymooners (you can even have your wedding at the island). The only resort on the island is located at Mataking Besar. You can walk around the whole island in about an hour; it is only 3km by 1,5km. During low tide you can even walk from the big island to the small island. The whole island is surrounded by house reefs, where you can easily do some fun snorkeling.

From May to August, you may be lucky enough to spot Green turtles and Hawksbill turtles laying their eggs on the beaches. There’s a dive school that offers great dives at numerous nice sites in the area, mainly around Mataking itself and around neighboring islands like Pandanan, Bohayan, Buhai Dulang, Kelapuan, Timba-Timba and Pom Pom.

TIOMAN ISLAND

On the southeastern side of the Peninsular Malaysia there is a group of 64 islands, of which Tioman Island is the biggest one (+/- 350 km2). Other known islands in this region are: Seri Bulat, Sembilang, Tulai, Sibu, Chebeh, Labas and Renggis. Tioman lies about 56 kilometers of the coast in the federalstate of Pahang. Together with Perhentian Island and Redang Island, Tioman is the most popular island on the eastern side of the peninsula. The island is especially known for its wonderful diving and snorkeling possibilities. There are many resorts on the island, catering for every type of traveler. Tioman is a duty-free island, which means some items are much cheaper compared to prices at the mainland.

KAPAS ISLAND

Kapas Island is located nearby the city of Kuala Terengganu at the eastern part of the peninsula. Kapas Island is only 2 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide. Compared to nearby islands like Perhentian and Redang, Kapas Island is much smaller and

It is a tiny island that travelers mainly visit for relaxation, sun bathing, diving and especially snorkeling as the corals around Kapas are very nice. You can rent snorkeling equipment for RM10 per day. There are a few paths that you can walk on if you like to do some light jungle

1 KUCHING Kuching is the capital of the East Malaysianstate of Sarawak. Being the most populous city in the state of Sarawak (over 600.000 inhabitants), Kuching emerged as one of the most vibrant cities in the region and it is the largest city on the island of Borneo and the fourth largest city in Malaysia. Many travel brochures refer to Kuching as ‘Cat City’. There’s a small chance that Kuching actually does derive from the Malay word for cat (kuching) as this word was not used on Borneo to refer to cats at all (pusak). The cat museum and other associations with cats have been largely a recent phenomenon, part of a modern effort of tourism. Current findings tell a different story; the name derives from a small river named sungei kuching. Kuching is a gateway to numerous great attractions in Sarawak.

Malaysian Cuisine

Malaysian cuisine is influenced by various cultures from all around the world. Malaysia’s population is made up mainly of 3 main ethnics Malays, Chinese and Indians, with a number of other ethnic groups living together mostly in harmony. As a result of historical migrations and Malaysia’s geographical advantage, Malaysia’s culinary style is a mixture of Malays, Chinese, Indians,Thais and Arabian cuisines - to name a few. This resulted in a symphony of flavors, making Malaysian cuisines highly exotic albeit a touch underrated as compared to some of its neighbouring counterparts.
