The IMO guidelines for the employment of armed guards on vessels (IMO Circ 1405/1406 and 1443) recommends that ship owners and operators ensure that contracted security companies who are providing such services guarantee that the security guards are fully trained and competent on the use of the specific firearms being used.

As an ICoC signatory member we also show due diligence in respect of the code and as such ensure that all operators working for us are provided with verifiable and recurrent training and are qualified to the highest standards. The ISO 9001 28007 standard for maritime security providers will be introduced in 2013. This will see a marked change in the way in which firearms training is conducted by Private Maritime Security Companies. Among other things it will insist that all armed security guards undergo a minimum level of firearms training which will include live firing practices and assessments.

One of the most recognized killers in today’s society is Cardiac Arrest. In the PL alone, the national death figure for cardiac arrest is in the region of 180.000 people annually. With the availability of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) this figure will be significantly lower. AED’s are at last becoming more and more visible into today’s society and hopefully before long they will be common place in every working and public environment.
