Sharon Fields : design/buildLAB Aug. 2014 - Aug. 2015 Site: Clifton Forge, VA Professors: Marie and Keith Zawistowski Students: Mary Covert, Luke Dale, Anuja Das, Leah Hodgson, Lauryn Jean, Kevin Lee, Zhuoran Liu, Robert Riggs, Kayla Sloan, A. Hunter Stephenson, Casey Walker, Sarah Walker, Hyuan Xie, Yueyang Wang, Lucanus Peeler Client: Alleghany County, VA Awards: (2017) Azure Magazine AZ Award of Merit. (2016) AIA Blue Ridge Award of Merit. Featured on: ArchDaily.com, Architizer.com. World-architects.com. This project encompassed designing and constructing all aspects of a Little League Baseball complex for the small town of Clifton Forge, VA. Working with our professors, the community, local companies, and local experts, we were able to bring the project through schematic design, construction documents, shop drawings, prefabrication, and on site assembly. Two fields sit at different elevations and are rotated away from each other. Components of the press box and concession are stacked and rotated to match the orientation and height of the fields. Angled steel panels line the back of the dugouts, providing ventilation and a transparent wall effect. Telescoping steel tube sections fit together to form the backstops. Terraced mounds surround the fields and provide natural stadium-like seating. My main responsibilities included developing the site plan, creating schematic designs of the dugouts and press box, and developing the press box and backstops through construction documents and shop drawings. I was involved with site work for both fields and spent most of my construction efforts with the backstops and press box, both in prefabrication and on site.

Terminal Expectations : Undergraduate Thesis Aug. 2016 - May 2017 Advisor: Aki Ishida A single space is not limited to a single function or experience, nor should it be perceived that way. Architecture is not created for the single. It is created for the mass. This thesis aims to create a space that is static in structure but dynamic in atmosphere, challenging what one might believe a building to be upon a first impression. As one moves, one sees, hears, feels, and digests more, gaining a greater understanding of the occupied space. Over time, the sun moves and weather changes. The environment is able to conceal, reveal, and change details as time progresses, creating a space that can be discovered over time, yet understood in a single moment. Capitalizing on movement, architecture can better serve and engage its users with changes in perception and sensation. These changes lend to a building that evokes comfort, ease, and commonplace while at the same time encourages exploration, contemplation, and excitement. As multiple details, functions, and people cross paths, one finds a space not created solely for them, but one created for many. Such a space helps challenge the passive attitude that has emerged towards the mundane expectation of the built environment.

This thesis is explored and researched through the use of an international airport terminal. The project proposes an extension of Terminal 3, the international terminal at the JosĂŠ MartĂ International Airport in Havana. Cuba. In a terminal, occupants move from A to B quickly and directly in order to get to their desired gate or baggage claim location. It is not until after they arrive at their destination that they pause and explore the space they are in. A terminal is often the first or last building a person occupies in a certain city. Because a terminal is usually rushed through, the building itself begins to lose importance and the occupants leave without a full understanding of the building and its possibilities. The aim of this thesis is to create a space that challenges the idea of how a building is perceived and used. The proposed terminal will seek to slow things down in a time-sensitive area. It will attempt to make people more aware of their surroundings and encourage occupants to uncover new details every time they enter and every time they turn around.

discoverU : Community Revival Mar. 18 - 20, 2016 Team Members: Kaitlyn Badlato, Luke Dale, Rebecca Soja HKS Design Fellowship, Washington D.C. Being selected for the fellowship based on work sample and application, along with six other architecture students across the country, I was able to work along side HKS employees for a weekend long design charrette. Our proposal leads poeple to begin looking beneath the surface to discover the history, culture, community, and possibilities of the U Street Corridor. The main objective is to peak curiosity and to promote playful interactions with interventions in the built environment that will empower people to discover the history of the corridor, the vibrant art/ music produced there, and their own potential to energize their community through activating mind and body. The overarching design concept utilizes dynamic and kinetic/mobile strategies to reveal information, displays, and performances. This will occur at 3 scales: 1. The U Street Heritage Trail that creates links throughout the neighborhood 2. The site’s public ‘hyper-active pop-up’ plaza and community center 3. Cost effective artist housing with expandable galleries/stages All drawings and models for project were made by all three teammates.

Aviary Living : Dynamic Spaces Nov. - Dec. 2013 Professor: Aki Ishida A home. An aviary. A guest home. Inspired by a bird’s flight, the form of the home undulates in and out as the building progresses upward. This creates three dynamic forms - two buildings and one aviary - that are connected via a bridge and the ground below, allowing for various forms of interactions. The combination of courtyard, windows, and bridge provide a range of spaces where visitors are able to observe the birds, where birds are able to observe visitors, and where both can interact with each other.

Graphics : Printmaking Jan. 2015 - Mar. 2015 Professors: Rengin Holt Mixing pigments, applying pigments to metal plates, applying plates to soaked paper, and rolling the set through a press. A process that needs to be done quick enough to not let anything dry but slow enough to prudently mix the right color and lay the plates. This project was an ongoing study of overlapping and intersecting geometries and color using techniques dependent on the hand over the digital.

Hand Crafted : Form Studies Top: Nov. 2012 Bottom: Mar. 2013 Professor: Sal Chouduray A series of repetitive forms that stack, rotate, and intersect to create a multitude of objects, spaces, and voids.

Landscaping Family : Transitional Spaces Apr. - May 2014 Professor: Aki Ishida A home for a family that owns and operates a landscaping company and runs the business from their house. This project tries to mediate the boundary between the hectic life of owning and running a business and the relaxing life of being able to unwind at home with family. Wooden panels are used to control privacy, direct travel and view, and provide a transition between office and house. Floor heights are offset to delineate different levels of privacy and function, allowing the family to rise up to the challenge of owning a company when needed and allowing them to retreat away from work when wanted.

21

Parabola : Digital Fabrication Oct. 2016 and Feb. 2017 Professors : Nathan King Students : Martin Angst, Sarah Bush, Jacob Bushmire, Siyuan Cheng, Sun Cho, Luke Dale, Habeeb Muhammed, Michelle Pannone, Ning Yang Using 116 nodes and 408 rods, an eight foot tall parabolic structure came to life. The parametric design was scripted in Grasshopper for Rhino after many design sketches and iterations. From there, a robot arm pressed nodes onto a spinning drill at precise angles and depths, while rods were manually cut to length. After drilling and cutting, we were able to easily connect the nodes and rods to assemble the final product on the right. I was specifically responsible for early design iterations and idea development, manning and equipping the robot with nodes, cutting rods to length, and overseeing the assembly of the structure. Sleep Institute : Blurred Boundaries Feb. - Mar. 2014 Professor: Aki Ishida

A building dedicated to sleep research utilizes walls made from layers of etched glass and concrete to evoke curiosity in visitors. The ground floor of this urban infill contains a pub in the front. The welcome center and library for sleep research is located in the back of the building on the ground floor, directly behind the bar. Noise-isolating and semi-transparent walls physically separate the quiet institute and library from the attached bar and rumbling city environment. These walls also simultaneously blur the boundaries between spaces, both interior and exterior. By allowing visitors to see blurred activity on the other side, the translucent walls pull visitors into and through the building, giving visitors the opportunity to learn about sleep and brain activity as well as participate in the experiments.

Ballston Cloud : Interactive Light & Sound Field Jan. - Oct. 2014 Professors : Ivica Ico Bukvic, Aki Ishida Students : Suzanne Berry, Ciara Bucci, Alex Cleavland, Hyun-Jun Cho, Corey Crist, Luke Dale, Zihan Hafiz, Zichun Huang, Spencer Lee, Christina, LoConte, Runyu Ma, Zachary Miller, Omavi Walker, Siyu Zhang, Ge Zhou

A network of fifty cloud-lets individually communicate with each other, the environment, and visitors to produce an interactive field of light and sound creating a one of a kind immersive experience for visitors. After material testing and finalizing the design and hardware, the cloud-lets were taken to a public workshop where visitors, under certain constraints and guidelines, were able to program each cloud-let to respond to and emit light and sound differently. The cloud-lets were laid out in a predetermined pattern to pay homage to the Potomac River, an important historical and cultural river for the D.C. area. Transformative Function : Open Corridors Jan. - Apr. 2016 Professors: Lucas Phinny, Markus Brietschimdt While moving through the building, one experiences hallways of varying size, shape, and enclosure formed from a series of intersecting vaults. In reality, they are walking through an open floor plan that is better experienced when one changes directions. This leaves visitors with a defined path to travel along when moving, and a place to collect when still. Situated on the site of the dilapidated brick yard at the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C., this project will become a market hall for the north east region of D.C. Upon it’s immediate completion it will serve as a temporary art gallery and home for the Phillips Collection. The perceived spatial divisions of the hall will house different collections of art, or different sectors of food and craft. The various vaulted corridors help provide separation and encourage movement to get people from one art gallery or food stand to the next. Working at an acoustical consulting firm allowed me to tackle architecture from a new perspective, seeing and working with a new side of the profession. Over the summer I was there, I worked on projects of varying size, scope, and phase. Hospitals, K-12 schools, and performance spaces were among the program types I was able to work with. I was able to help set up, run, and analyze acoustical tests, such as tapping tests to determine a system’s impact insulation class on both buildings under construction and finished buildings. I was able to help determine which wall, floor, and ceiling assemblies should be used and where for a new high school near Miami, FL. I created drawings to illustrate the details of backstage, including curtains and cat walks. I was able to test throw patterns of different sound systems in certain theaters and help determine the optimal type and location. I attended regular meetings with different architects, engineers, and other consultants to help coordinate the work we were all doing.

This project program is a new office and headquarter building for a non-profit based out of Kenya that provides aid to African farmers. I joined the team as they were beginning construction documents and spent majority of my time developing window, door, interior connection, roof, gutter, and down spout details that would be easy to understand and construct given the context of the project while also keeping true to the project’s mission. I also helped create reflected ceiling plans, and coordinate landscape and structural details.

Team: (CA) Jean Paul Uzabakiriho, Ines Uwimbabazi, Sarah Mohland Client: University of Global Health Equity For the last month of my internship I spent almost all my time living on site in northwest Rwanda supervising the construction of a 21 building medical university. I was able to send out weekly update reports and site instructions, respond to RFI’s and mock up reports. I helped ensure ongoing construction was matching the drawings and meeting established standards, and was able to quickly work both on and off site to solve and coordinate different issues as they arose. Such issues included pipes running through windows, incorrectly poured concrete columns, and conduit for exterior lighting not matching the drawings.

Redemption Hospital : CD Phase Jun. - Aug. 2017 Team: (Arch) Emily Goldenberg, John Maher, Emily McGowan, David Salidik, Alan Ricks, (La.Arch) Kordae Henry, Martin Pavlinic, Sierra Bainbridge Client: Ministry of Health (Liberia) As an intern of MASS Design Group, I spent my first three months in Boston, Massachusetts working on a new Hospital in Liberia that was just beginning the CD phase. My responsibilities included investigating different facade strategies and comparing them through metrics such as ease of constructibility, material sourcing, maintenance requirements, rain and solar protection, view, and appearance. I was also able to help finalize the roofing system. I spent time developing and coordinating the lighting strategy with our MEP team (Mazzetti Inc.). I worked on organizing the layout of the different wards, creating interior elevations and reflected ceiling plans, and figuring out interior details. I was also able to help create different marketing materials including informational pamphlets and early renders.
