LOGBOOK ENTRY Week 6! Luke Adamson!

! !

Roof systems are the primary shelter for most structures. ! Concrete roofs are more expensive than other roof systems, therefore they are only used for major structure (e.g if the roof needs to be walked on).!

!

A portal frame is a combination of columns and beams connected with rigid joints to create a frame.!

! ! !

Roof systems can be made out of a variety of things, such as terracotta!

!

, slate, timber shingles, concrete tiles, metals. http://www.redbubble.com/people/plainjane/works/8798167-grey-wooden-shingle-roof!

! They are not terribly waterproof so they are put on a steeper pitch to allow the water to run off.!

! Zincalume is a zinc/aluminium alloy that coats steel.!

!

Some of its qualities include long life span, high resistance to corrosion and high thermal efficiency.!

!

Zincalume has a life span of almost 4 times as long as galvanised steel and is resistant to termite attacks, making it an excellent roofing material.

CLASSROOM ACTIVITY INTERIM DESIGN SUBMISSION!

!

This weeks class submission involved each of the three groups presenting their work that had been completed so far. These notes were taken down in regards to to each site.!

!

ASCOT VALE! - it is a small residential site being constructed by Carbon Lite Construction.! - the budget for the build is between 300 and 400 thousand dollars.! - steel caissons of 300 mm thickness are driven into the ground about 2 stories (6-7 metres) into solid ground.! - to do this, they drill the deep holes and remove the dirt, then insert the steel caissons and add steel reinforcement to increase the strength.! - the design is an unusual design branded an ‘Architectural Esky’ and has qualities meaning faster construction, due to be completed around Christmas time.! BRIGHTON! - this site has a high budget! - there is a large car park with room for a gym and turntable so that cars don't have to reverse out.! - the indoor pool is being constructed, with the walls being made from shotcrete sprayed onto the walls. The finish here isn’t important because they are going to be tiled.! - the underground work has soldier pier walls.! - you can identify a large budget because of the use of precast concrete walls, such as those in the lift shaft. ! - the concrete panels have lifting lugs in order to be able to move them into place. Stitch plates tie these concrete panels together.! - steel props are used to provide support on the precast walls.! - the first floor is suspended concrete! This was a quick activity to show the strength of fixed and pin joints. The fixed joints showed more strength, with less deflexion being shown at a greater force in comparison to the pin joints. 3

E-LEARNING & READINGS Metals are very regularly found, commonly as part of minerals.! They come in 2 types, ferrous and non-ferrous. Ferrous metals and alloys contain iron; non-ferrous materials do not. ! Rust is oxidisation of the iron in ferrous materials. That means non-ferrous metals do not rust, but rather they can be broken down and corroded.!

! Some characteristics of metals in general terms:
 - they are in most cases impermeable! -

they are high in density!

-

non-ferrous metals can be high in conductivity and often have no magnetic properties!

-

non-ferrous metals are commonly more expensive than ferrous metals ( for example, aluminium is more expensive than steel).!

! A truss is a structure comprising five or more triangular units constructed with straight members. The top and bottom beams are called top and bottom chords and the internal beams are known as webs. The bottom is generally in tension, while the top is in compression.! !

! Increasing the depth of a truss will allow it to span a greater distance.! The gable is the triangular

sections at one or both ends of a house.!

! ! THIS WEEKS KEY TERMS GLOSSARY! Rafter- a beam forming part of the internal framework of a roof.! Purlin- a horizontal beam along the length of a roof, resting on principals and supporting the common rafters or boards.! Cantilever- a long projecting beam or girder fixed at only one end.! Portal Frame- a rigid structural frame consisting essentially of two uprights connected at the top by a third member.! Eaves- the part of a roof that meets or overhangs the walls of a building.! Alloy- a metal made by combining two or more metallic elements, especially to give greater strength or resistance to corrosion.! Soffit- the underside of an architectural structure such as an arch, a balcony, or overhanging eaves.! Top Chord- the top horizontal beam in a truss.
