P R O L O G U E THE PROJECTS I UNDERTOOK DURING MY ADVANCED DIPLOMA & BACHELOR WERE ALL COMPLETED INDIVIDUALLY, AS WELL AS DURING MY EMPLOYMENT AT SACBW AND BDHA. I WAS ALLOWED TO EXPRESS MY CREATIVITY WHICH MOTIVATED ME FURTHER TO REFINE MYSELF AS A DESIGNER, IMPROVING MY UNDERSTANDING OF ARCHITECTURE AND HONING MY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE ACROSS THE MULTITUDE OF ARCHITECTURAL STYLE AND HISTORY. THE AIM OF THIS DESIGN WAS TO EMBODY THE URBAN STREET SCAPE BY INCORPORATING AN INDUSTRIAL STYLE RESIDENTIAL DESIGN TO A NEAR SEEMINGLY DULL STREET. LOCATED IN PRESTON, THESE TOWNHOUSES SET THE PINNACLE IN DESIGN ALONG OAKOVER ROAD. THE DESIGN PROMOTES NATURAL AND DURABLE MATERIALS SUCH AS RED GUM TIMBER AND WEATHERING STEEL. OPENINGS AND FENESTRATION ARE POWDER COATED CHARCOAL BLACK TO INTENSIFY THE INDUSTRIAL STYLE. PROPOSED VEGETATION IN ENDEMIC AND REQUIRES LITTLE SECTION 1 - 1 MAINTENANCE

THIS DESIGN CONCLUDED MY THIRD YEAR AT NMIT / MELBOURNE POLYTECHNIC. I WANTED TO SHOW CASE RAW AND NATURAL FORM MATERIALITY, I DID THIS BY CHOOSING A VERY SELECT AMOUNT OF MATERIALS SUCH AS CONCRETE, STEEL, TIMBER AND GLASS. THIS GAVE ME THE FREEDOM TO PUSH THE LIMITS OF NATURAL TEXTURES AND FINISHES. CROSS - SECTION THIS MINIMAL AMOUNT OF MATERIAL LET ME CELEBRATE AND HIGHLIGHT THE BUILDING FOR ITS HONESTY, AS WELL AS IT’S ORIGINALITY TO MATERIALITY BY LETTING THE CLADDING SPEAK FOR ITSELF. THIS DESIGN IS EQUIPPED WITH SUB FLOOR & GROUND FLOOR PARKING, GROUND FLOOR RETAIL, FIRST FLOOR OFFICE SPACE, SECOND & THIRD RESIDENTIAL APARTMENTS & ROOF TO P -T E R RSYDNEY A C E .ROAD, BRUNSWICK MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT SECTION 568 574

CONCEPT INSPIRED BY DANTE’S INFERNO, I WANTED TO CREATE A WALKING PAVILION THAT BROUGHT ON EMOTIONS AND FEELINGS AS THE USER EXPERIENCED IT. USING N A T U R A L V E G E T A T I O N S U C H A S S H ROFFUGREY B S ,RENDER P L ARETAINING N T S AWALL ND TREES, THIS ALLOWED FOR GREATER AWE FOR THE USERS EXPERIENCE. LOCATED ON HERRING ISLAND AMONGST BEAUTIFUL VEGETATION, USE OF TIMBER ALONG WITH CONCRETE AND WATER HARMONIZE THE USERS EXPERIENCE AS THEY TRAVEL TO A PLACE TO KEEP SECRETS.

CIVIL

CONCEPT: INTERNAL VS. EXTERNAL INTEGRATION

THIS CONCEPT WAS INSPIRED BY THE WAY PEOPLE INTERACT WITH THEIR SURROUNDINGS AND HOW CLOSED OFF WE ARE TO NATURE. WITHIN THIS DESIGN I WANTED TO INCORPORATE OUR WORLD WITH NATURE’S WORLD. THE IDEA IS THAT BY USING WIRE SPREAD AT INCREMENTS, ATTACHED LARGE COLUMNS CREATE A PARAMETRIC DESIGN, AS WELL AS OVER TIME, VINES, SMALL INSECTS AND VEGETATION WILL SPROUT LIFE AND AMONGST THE WIRE AND CREATE A SMALL ENCLOSED HABITAT. THE USER WILL BE ABLE TO PASS THROUGH THIS EXPERIENCE BRINING THEM CLOSER TO NATURE.

COMPLETED AS MY FINAL DESIGN FOR MY UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE, I PRESENT, THE HORIZN BUILDING. THE CONCEPT WAS INSPIRED BY INDIVIDUAL PEOPLE COMMITTING THEMSELVES TO EDUCATION AND LEARNING. WITH KNOWLEDGE COMES POWER AND THIS BUILDING AIMS TO CELEBRATE THE PEOPLE WHO CONTINUE TO PURSUE AND ASCEND TO THEIR HIGHEST DREAMS. THIS BUILDING ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO TAKE PART WITHIN THERE SCHOOLS SOCIAL AND WORKING LIFE BY GIVING STUDENTS AND STAFF SEPARATE AREAS, DYNAMIC CLASSROOMS AND INTERNAL / EXTERNAL AREAS FOR LEISURE. THIS DESIGN IS PREDOMINANTLY CONCRETE, STEEL, ALUMINUM, TIMBER AND GLASS. INTERNALLY A SENSE OF AWE IS CREATED BY THE DIFFUSION OF LIGHT THROUGH THE EXTERNAL ALUMINUM CLADDING. TIMBER IS USED INTERNALLY TO SOFTEN THE ROUGH AND HARD CONCRETE. THE BUILDING ITSELF IS MONOLITHIC IN NATURE, IT HALTS THE ATTENTION OF PEOPLE PASSING BY, AS WELL AS PEOPLE WHEN SCALED NEXT TO IT.

A COMMON THEME WITHIN BRUNSWICK WAS THE USE OF TERRACOTTA. THE DESIGN INTENTION WAS TO GIVE BACK TO THE HISTORICAL MATERIALITY THAT HAS DEFINED BRUNSWICK BY REUSING THE SAME MATERIAL IN DIFFERENT AND UNIQUE WAYS. I CHOSE SPECIFICALLY TO USE RECYCLED TERRACOTTA RIDGE ROOF TILES AS THESE ARE SYMBOLIC OF THE MATERIAL THAT EUROPEAN IMMIGRANTS COMMONLY USED WHEN BUILDING THEIR HOMES, ALONG WITH THEIR VERSATILITY TO BE USED IN A MULTITUDE OF DIFFERENT FORMS.

71 HOLMES STREET WAS THE 3rd PROJECT I UNDERTOOK FOR SACBW. THE DESIGN WAS TO HAVE STREET PRESENCE ALONG WITH A UNIQUE FACADE THAT BROUGHT NEW LIFE TO THE BRUNSWICK AREA. THE PROJECT CONSISTS OF 7 TOWNHOUSES, ALL OF WHICH ACCOMMODATE A 3 STOREY DWELLING ALONG WITH A ROOFTOP TERRACE / GARDEN.

AITKEN STREET TOWNHOUSES IS A MULTI-LEVEL SEASIDE DESIGN THAT DERIVES FROM THE WILLIAMSTOWN FORESHORE. THE TOWNHOUSES ARE MADE UP OF 3 PARTS: BASE, CORE AND CROWN. THE PROJECT HOUSES A DOUBLE CAR GARAGE, 3 BEDROOMS, 3 BATHROOMS ALONG WITH KITCHEN, LIVING AND DINING ALONG WITH COSY STUDY NOOK.

SITUATED BEHIND NELSON PLACE, THE AITKEN STREET DEVELOPMENT ALLOWS FOR INCREDIBLE VIEWS WITHOUT HINDERING NELSON PLACE, AND IS WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE TO THE FORESHORE.

MY INSPIRATION FOR THE PROPOSED DESIGN CAME FROM THE SURROUNDING AREA OF WILLIAMSTOWN. THE EXTERIOR IS CLADDED WITH A ZINC FISH SCALE CLADDING THAT WRAPS AROUND THE GROUND STOREY TO TERRACE LEVEL. AT THE BASE OF THE DESIGN, A HEAVY MASONRY BRICK ACTS AS THE ANCHOR GROUNDING THE BUILDING IN PLACE AND ADDING A LIGHT TERRACOTTA COLOUR TO THE STREETSCAPE. THE CROWN OF THE DEVELOPMENT BOASTS AN ARCHITECTURAL EXPRESSION OF A VERANDA THAT ENCLOSES THE ROOFTOP TERRACE WHILST STILL LEAVING IT EXPOSED TO THE EXTERNAL ELEMENTS. THE TIMBER VERANDA CREEPS DOWN THE WALL AND TIES INTO THE ASCENDING FISH SCALE FACADE THAT DIRECTLY FACES AITKEN STREET.

LIGHT AND SHADOW PLAYED A LARGE ROLE WITHIN THE PROJECT. LARGE VOIDED AREAS ALLOW FOR LIGHT TO FLOOD IN AND ILLUMINATE THE INTERIORS. SHADOWS CAST FROM THE LOUVRE SYSTEM AND WINDOW GLAZING ENHANCE THE INTERNAL SPACE CREATING RIPPLES OF LIGHT THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT.

THE HORIZONTALITY OF THE DESIGN DEMANDED CONTRAST, THEREFORE, I USED REMOTELY OPEN-ABLE VERTICAL LOUVRE SYSTEMS WHICH WILL ACT AS EXTERNAL FACADE DETAIL AND SHADING DEVICES. A LIVING AREA WAS CREATED FOR THE MEZZANINE AREA ON THE FIRST FLOOR AS VIEWS TO MELBOURNES CBD WERE ENCHANTING AS THE SUN GOES DOWN AND PINK AND PURPLE FILL THE MELBOURNE SKYLINE.

D R I V E

WAS THE FIRST PROJECT I HAVE EVER COMPLETED. IT WAS AN EXTRAORDINARY FEELING. IT IS AN ITEM I CAN TICK OFF MY BUCKET LIST WHERE I HAVE DESIGNED TOWNHOUSES, THAT HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED BY COUNCIL AND HAVE COMMENCED CONSTRUCTION. THE EMOTION OF AWE SOLIDIFIED MY FEELINGS TOWARDS ARCHITECTURE, ANCHORING MY BELIEF THAT I WAS BORN TO DO THIS AND WILL PURSUE TO ADAPT AND OVERCOME ANY ARCHITECTURAL CHALLENGE I ENCOUNTER. IN MY LIFE, I WILL TACKLE EVERY OPPORTUNITY WITH THE SAME AMOUNT OF TENACITY AND PERSEVERANCE I PUT INTO BECOMING AN ARCHITECT.
