Semester: Fall 2017 Location: Atlanta, GA Size: 3,647 Acres

Neighborhood Planning Unit-G is a compilation of twelve neighborhoods in urban Atlanta, Georgia. The area has been under-served for many years, and over time has fallen into a state of disrepair. LAND 4050 partnered with the Georgia Conservancy in an effort to promote economic growth and sustainable development throughout the NPU while paying additional attention to fourteen specific sites outlined as opportunities for redevelopment by the Georgia Conservancy. Through an updated master plan and a site specific design, LAND 4050 aims to capitalize on the underutilized resources of the NPU, such as its proximity to the Chattahoochee River and high percentage of vacant parcels, to create a vibrant community in the heart of Atlanta.

Semester: Fall 2017 Location: Atlanta, Georgia Size: 87.2 Acres

The abandoned Chattahoochee Brick Company site is one of many industrial sites in Neighborhood Planning Unit-G that fronts the Chattahoochee river. The planned Riverwalk Atlanta Project and the in-progress Proctor Creek Greenway intersect on the site, making it an ideal location to provide NPU-G with needed public green space. Many community members call for the site to become a memorial to the convict laborers who worked and died on this land. This proposal aims to memorialize by preserving burial sites, in addition to creating different methods of marking the Chattahoochee Brick Company’s infrastructure and laborer residences. This park is programmed as a memorial, a place for recreation, education, and ecological preservation.

Site History

Site Timeline

In 1885, this site was bought by the Chattahoochee Brick Company. Bricks were in high demand following the Atlanta fire, and the Chattahoochee Brick Company owned by Civil War Hero and Atlantan Mayor, Captain James W. English, used forced convict labor to rebuild a fireproof Atlanta. As mayor, English ordered that all new streets be built of brick, providing his company a steady supply of business. English went on to become head of police where he could ensure a convict labor force. Captain English boasted that his company could produce 200,000 bricks per day, making it one of the largest enterprises in the South. To accomplish this while maximizing profit, laborer’s of the Chattahoochee Brick Company were starved and tortured for moving slowly, leading to an uknown number of deaths. Most bodies were buried on site, while some are said to have been burned in the kilns. Laborers were often black and arrested for petty crimes. Mistreatment of a largely black convict labor force on this land was highlighted in Douglas Blackmon’s Pulitzer Prize winning book, “Slavery by Another Name”. Evidence of the company’s work can be found across Atlanta in the form of weathered bricks incised with the number 1 on the end, some still bear the fingerprint of their creator.

Grave site Memorial The Wall

The Design

The wall is designed to be constructed of this brick which comes from a 1886 Chattahoochee Brick Company product catalogue 10,067 bricks make up this wall . At it’s peak, the Chattahoochee Brick Company could produce these bricks in 36 minutes.

Simple forms, material choices, and the secluded nature of the memorial make it a place of contemplation. The pathway and brick wall, which allow the viewing of the convict laborer burial site, control the movement of visitors, creating a sense of confinement. Engravings on the wall help to tell the story of the laborers who worked and died here.

Kiln Site Short concrete walls mark the location of a fallen row of kilns which once dried the bricks of the Chattahoochee Brick Company. Pines planted in the corners of each kiln room echo the pines which were uses as kiln supports. Openings in these concrete walls creates a winding path through

this historic site. Information on the walls helps teach of the sites history. Paths on either side of this row lay on the site of rail lines which once serviced the brick company. Semester: Summer 2018 Location: Cortona, Italy Size: .39 Acres

Since the dedication of the piazza to General Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1961, few changes have been made. This has made Piazza Garibaldi a place that doesn’t fully address the needs of a more modern Cortona and a growing tourist population. Both locals and tourists are drawn to the piazzas magnificent views of the surrounding valley and lake. The piazza design consists of several unique rooms, each serving a slightly different function. Use of stone, addition of fountains, simple layout, and classical forms create a design language consistent with traditional Italian piazzas. Overhead lighting, unique paving patters, and seatwalls work to put a modern twist on classical Italian landscape design.

Semester: Fall 2016 Location: Athens, Georgia Size: 10.29 Acres

The purpose of the Swiss Army Shed project was to design and build a multi-use structure to accommodate the needs of a refugee community garden using only salvaged material. The project began by assessing the needs of the refugees who farm the land. The refugees needed a place to cut and wash vegetables, a place to store tools, and shady place to rest. The shed that I designed was selected to be built, and after modifications due to limited materials, underwent the construction process.
