Welcome to The Mission Theatre It is with great pleasure that we bring you The Mission Theatre’s Autumn 2012 Brochure. Our regular audience members will not be surprised to ind in its pages another fabulous season of irst-class entertainment. However, in case you have not yet discovered this beautiful little theatre in the heart of Bath, here are three good reasons for getting to know us: 1. The drama available to you throughout the Autumn here at The Mission is some of the best you will ind in Bath and beyond, and at prices you can afford. No need to go to London to see such blockbusters as Jez Butterworth’s Jerusalem, Richard Harris’ Outside Edge or Tennessee Williams’ Sweet Bird of Youth, they’re all here this season, not to mention the Bath première of Doubt. 2. If you are looking for music and dance, look no further. The Mission’s versatile auditorium has acclaimed acoustics and provides the perfect arena for the concerts, musicals and cabaret events that feature every month from now until Christmas. 3. If you have, or know, talented and creative young people then The Mission Theatre is the place to bring them. Next Stage Youth - our Youth Theatre is second to none and has a membership of 60 youngsters. PTKids runs music classes for 3-11 year olds at The Mission every Saturday. For the ifth year running, the Kids Lit Fest will be delighting younger audiences in September and talented young performers feature throughout our Autumn programme. Oh, and I should have said there is a fourth reason to get to know us - and that is our delicious Green Room Bistro - see below. STARS Summer School Monday 20 – Friday 24 August 10am – 4pm Join top-class actors, choreographers, musicians and theatre practitioners for a fun-illed week of Stage Technique, Acting and Rehearsal Skills. This ive day course of improvisation, music, stage combat, dance and stage technique is aimed at 11-16 year olds who are passionate about the performing arts. Next Stage Youth Next Stage Youth is one of Bath’s most popular youth theatre companies. In existence since 1994, this lourishing group led by professionals and Next Stage actors has provided hundreds of young people with training in theatre and performance skills. Next Stage Youth welcomes young people from 11 years old and many stay in the group until they are 18 when there is a natural progression into the adult company. Next Stage Youth places emphasis on performance – either in the youngsters’ own productions such as July 2012’s epic show His Dark Materials, and wherever possible with the adult company. NSY is unique in Bath in giving young people who are passionate about theatre the opportunity to regularly embrace adult projects with the parent company as well as working on their own productions. Bestselling biographer (Jane Austen and the (no concessions) Theatre), author and Jane Austen expert, Paula Byrne, recently acquired a portrait purporting to be that of Jane Austen. After extensive research, part of which was ilmed and shown on the BBC in December 2011, many eminent Austen experts were also persuaded of its authenticity. There was one notable exception: Deidre Le Faye. Perhaps you agree with Ms Le Faye? Paula’s most recently published book, entitled Mad World: Evelyn Waugh and the Secrets of Brideshead, reached the Sunday Times top ten bestseller list in 2009. Her next book is near completion with publication in 2013 and is an ‘innovative biography of Jane Austen’. Doubt

by John Patrick Shanley Next Stage Theatre Company is once again proud to announce the Bath première of another topical, modern, award-winning play. It begins innocently enough: Father Brendan Flynn, a charismatic priest and teacher at St Nicholas’ School, inspires congregations with his sermons and enthuses pupils with his lessons. The School’s principal, Sister Aloysius, is the opposite of Father Flynn, reserved, distant and severe. And she starts to have doubts: a chance word, a suspicious event, a casual remark, these are enough to make the judgemental nun question Father Flynn’s probity in the most fundamental of trusts: that between a priest and the boys in his care. John Patrick Shanley’s play written in 2004, but set in 1960’s New York, is a searing exploration of topical issues. In 2012 the Catholic Church still faces never-ending accusations of child abuse by priests, and in this day and age of instant news and social media there is often nowhere for a person to hide if the rumour mill runs out of control. Don’t miss this powerful play which challenges audiences to question their own certainties.

Outside Edge by Richard Harris Written by the author of the hilarious “Stepping Out”, Outside Edge takes us to a quiet village cricket Pavilion and deals with an eventful Saturday afternoon in the lives of the stalwarts of the village cricket team. Roger struggles to keep together his team to play against the British Railways Maintenance Division Yeading East, while the wives and girlfriends of his players help and hinder his efforts to devastating effect when the team are caught out in more ways than the sporting one. Richard Harris has created a witty and comic play about how an obsession can affect the lives of a small group of people. or the Lass That Loved A Sailor by Gilbert & Sullivan Following last year’s sell-out performances of Lehar’s classic The Merry Widow, Bath G&S Society is back on home ground with Gilbert & Sullivan’s nautical favourite - HMS Pinafore - the pair’s irst major success. Pinafore gently pokes fun at the British class system in a tale of romance and adventure on the high seas, with a surprising twist in the tale. Common sailor Ralph Rackstraw has fallen in love with Josephine, the haughty daughter of the gentlemanly Captain. However her father has arranged for Josephine to marry the First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Joseph Porter. Can Josephine escape Sir Joseph’s unwelcome attentions? Will she overcome her natural snobbery to return Ralph’s love? All will be revealed - in the end! The opera boasts some of Sullivan’s most memorable melodies including “I’m called little Buttercup”, “Never mind the why and wherefore”, “Let’s give three cheers” and the patriotic “For he is an Englishman”. Avon Street Car Park is opposite the theatre and the Riverside Coach Park is at the end of Corn Street. Car parks on either side of the building are private and not for the use of theatre goers.

Bath Spa train and bus stations are within 3 minutes’ walk.

Disabled Access:

The Main Auditorium has full disabled access and facilities.

Bar:

Our attractive fully licensed bar and Bistro are located upstairs but cold drinks may be taken down into the Main Auditorium. The bar is open whenever an event takes place and audiences can purchase hot and cold drinks, light meals, home made cakes and illed rolls.
