In existence since 1994, this lourishing group led by professionals and Next Stage actors has provided hundreds of young people with training in theatre and performance skills. Next Stage Youth welcomes young people from 11 years old and many stay in the group until they are 18 when there is a natural progression into the adult company. Next Stage Youth places emphasis on performance – either in the youngsters’ own productions such as July 2012’s epic show His Dark Materials, and wherever possible with the adult company. Tue 4 – Sat 8 September 7.30pm Next Stage Theatre Company presents
Jerusalem by Jez Butterworth Next Stage’s acclaimed production of Jez Butterworth’s award-winning smash hit is back in Bath by popular demand, following a sell-out run in January. It’s St George’s Day, the morning of the local county fair: Johnny “Rooster” Byron, local waster and modern-day Pied Piper, is a wanted man embattled in the Wessex woodland. Facing eviction from his dilapidated mobile home, plying his friends with drink and drugs, ducking and weaving to avoid outraged neighbours, Rooster has little time to enjoy the annual pageant. Jez Butterworth’s comic, contemporary vision of life in “England’s green and pleasant land” is compelling theatre. Jerusalem gives voice to the dispossessed and the disaffected in the person of Rooster Byron - a shockingly familiar, modern-day Everyman, played again in this production by Next Stage leading actor Tim Evans. “Don’t miss this – even if you do have to queue all night for a ticket” Bath Chronicle “Superb! Visceral and poetic, lusty and bucolic… the set couldn’t be more lifelike and immersive, while Tim Evans’ cocksure, charismatic Rooster could square up to Mark Rylance any day.” Venue www.next-stage.co.uk With grateful thanks to this show’s Angels WARNING: this play can shock. It contains strong language and adult themes Enjoy a delicious meal before the show: The Green Room is open from 6pm with a full range of vegetarian and vegan meals and desserts. The Real Jane Austen with Paula Byrne £12
In this musical presentation discover the (no concessions) underlying sensuality in the music, fashion and culture of the Regency era and hear why Austen’s novels still have so much sex appeal in the modern world. Superb Soprano Rosie Lomas, Pianist Katarzyna Kowalic and special guest ‘Mr Darcy’ provide an entertaining programme of songs, amusing facts and readings inspired by the works of Jane Austen. Including songs from Jane Austen’s own collection as well as melodies and arias of her day, this presentation places Classical music within the context of Austen’s novels and explores what Austen has to say about love, relationships and the dawn of the Romantic Movement. Duration 1 hour 15 mins (with interval)

Bestselling biographer (Jane Austen and the (no concessions) Theatre), author and Jane Austen expert, Paula Byrne, recently acquired a portrait purporting to be that of Jane Austen. After extensive research, part of which was ilmed and shown on the BBC in December 2011, many eminent Austen experts were also persuaded of its authenticity. There was one notable exception: Deidre Le Faye. Perhaps you agree with Ms Le Faye? Paula’s most recently published book, entitled Mad World: Evelyn Waugh and the Secrets of Brideshead, reached the Sunday Times top ten bestseller list in 2009. Her next book is near completion with publication in 2013 and is an ‘innovative biography of Jane Austen’. This Jane Austen Festival event is an informal discussion during which Paula will no doubt discuss her marvellous discovery as well as her current work. Duration 1 hour 30 mins (with interval)

Tue 23 – Sat 27 October 7.30pm Next Stage Theatre Company presents
Doubt
by John Patrick Shanley Next Stage Theatre Company is once again proud to announce the Bath première of another topical, modern, award-winning play. It begins innocently enough: Father Brendan Flynn, a charismatic priest and teacher at St Nicholas’ School, inspires congregations with his sermons and enthuses pupils with his lessons. The School’s principal, Sister Aloysius, is the opposite of Father Flynn, reserved, distant and severe. And she starts to have doubts: a chance word, a suspicious event, a casual remark, these are enough to make the judgemental nun question Father Flynn’s probity in the most fundamental of trusts: that between a priest and the boys in his care. John Patrick Shanley’s play written in 2004, but set in 1960’s New York, is a searing exploration of topical issues. In 2012 the Catholic Church still faces never-ending accusations of child abuse by priests, and in this day and age of instant news and social media there is often nowhere for a person to hide if the rumour mill runs out of control. Don’t miss this powerful play which challenges audiences to question their own certainties.

Outside Edge by Richard Harris Written by the author of the hilarious “Stepping Out”, Outside Edge takes us to a quiet village cricket Pavilion and deals with an eventful Saturday afternoon in the lives of the stalwarts of the village cricket team. Roger struggles to keep together his team to play against the British Railways Maintenance Division Yeading East, while the wives and girlfriends of his players help and hinder his efforts to devastating effect when the team are caught out in more ways than the sporting one. Richard Harris has created a witty and comic play about how an obsession can affect the lives of a small group of people. Written with a sympathetic understanding of human nature, Outside Edge is a great British comedy with the more rare ingedients of bite and pathos. HMS Pinafore
or the Lass That Loved A Sailor by Gilbert & Sullivan Following last year’s sell-out performances of Lehar’s classic The Merry Widow, Bath G&S Society is back on home ground with Gilbert & Sullivan’s nautical favourite - HMS Pinafore - the pair’s irst major success. Pinafore gently pokes fun at the British class system in a tale of romance and adventure on the high seas, with a surprising twist in the tale. Common sailor Ralph Rackstraw has fallen in love with Josephine, the haughty daughter of the gentlemanly Captain. However her father has arranged for Josephine to marry the First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Joseph Porter. Can Josephine escape Sir Joseph’s unwelcome attentions? Will she overcome her natural snobbery to return Ralph’s love? All will be revealed - in the end! The opera boasts some of Sullivan’s most memorable melodies including “I’m called little Buttercup”, “Never mind the why and wherefore”, “Let’s give three cheers” and the patriotic “For he is an Englishman”. Sweet Bird of Youth by Tennessee Williams “There’s a thing called a close-up. The camera advances and you stand still and your head, your face, is caught in the frame of the picture with a light blazing on it and all your terrible history screams while you smile.” Sweet Bird of Youth is an exploration of lost youth, beauty and dreams. Chance Wayne, failed, one-time heart throb returns to his home in an attempt to regain the love of his life: Heavenly. On his travels Chance has picked up fading movie star: Alexandra del Lago. Befuddled by drugs and alcohol, Alexandra is easy prey to Chance’s gigolo charms. Boss Finlay, Heavenly’s father, is incensed that Chance is back in town and vows to wreak a terrible retribution on the man who he believes ruined his daughter’s life. Next Stage Theatre Company has been acclaimed for its memorable productions of other Tennessee Williams classics, now Richard Matthews as Chance and Kay Francksen as Alexandra del Lago head a stellar Next Stage cast to bring to Bath audiences this powerful and disturbing tale of failed dreams, thwarted love and the dark side of the American dream.
