The Double

by Fyodor Dostoevsky (1846) Adapted by Meredith Oakes (2012) Thursday 22nd November – Saturday 22nd December Imagine waking up one morning and finding that another person - an exact replica of you - has hijacked your body, and, posing as you, infiltrates your friendships, gatecrashes parties, humiliates waiters, behaves disgracefully and generally wreaks havoc! TOM CONTI stars in

Rough Justice

Aladdin

by Terence Frisby

Television journalist James Highwood has made his career out of challenging the British justice system in his documentary programmes. Now, suddenly, it is Highwood himself who is challenged when he is brought to court on a charge of murder.

and winner of the Writers' Guild of Great Britain Award for the Best British Comedy Screenplay. His television comedy series include Lucky Feller with David Jason and That's Love which won the Gold Award for Comedy at the 1991 Houston International Film Festival.

Highwood admits the killing but perversely chooses to conduct his own defence, pushing the tolerance of the court to its limits and framing his plea in terms calculated to incense the judge. Tom Conti is brilliantly suited to the part of Highwood in this gripping courtroom drama, with more than its share of surprising twists and turns.

“Frisby’s writing is sharp, and the court room interchanges positively crackle” Sunday Express

“As funny as anything Ayckbourn has ever written” The Times “The most brilliant comedy of misunderstandings to have been written in the past 40 years” Daily Telegraph Greg only met Ginny a month ago but has already made up his mind that she’s the girl for him. When she tells him that she’s going to visit her parents, he decides this is the moment to ask her father for his daughter’s hand. “Comic bliss with brass knobs on”

 Independent “Perfection” The Times

Following a critically acclaimed and sell out West End season, the celebrated Ealing comedy, The Ladykillers, comes to life on stage in an hilarious and thrilling new adaptation by Graham Linehan (Father Ted, Black Books,The IT Crowd), directed by Sean Foley (The Play What I Wrote). The Ladykillers is a classic black comedy in which a dotty little old lady, alone in her house, is pitted against a gang of criminal misfits who will stop at nothing…Posing as amateur musicians, Professor Marcus and his gang rent rooms in the lopsided house of sweet but strict Mrs Wilberforce. The villains plot to involve her unwittingly in Marcus’s brilliantly conceived heist, but she becomes wise to their ruse and Marcus concludes that there is only one way to keep the old lady quiet. With only her parrot, General Gordon, to help her, Mrs W. is alone with five desperate men. But who will be forced to face the music?

The Ladykillers broke records during its run at London's Gielgud Theatre over Christmas 2011 when the box office take for a single week was the highest in the theatre's history. Set in a tenement house, against the backdrop of the Easter Rising in 1916, The Plough and the Stars is both an intimate play about the lives of ordinary people and an epic play about ideals and the birth of the Irish nation. Amidst the tumult of political upheaval, Jack and Nora Clitheroe are ‘like two turtle doves always billing and cooing’, much to the ridicule of their bustling neighbours. But when Ireland calls, Jack must choose between love for his wife and duty to his country. Heartbreaking, disturbing and very funny, The Plough and The Stars is an iconic play to which director, Wayne Jordan, brings the fresh perspective of a new generation. Since it first opened its doors in 1904, Ireland’s national theatre has played a vital and often controversial role in the literary, social and cultural life of Ireland. Over the years, the Abbey Theatre has nurtured and premiered the work of

major playwrights such as J M Synge and Sean O’Casey - his plays The Shadow of a Gunman, Juno and the Paycock and The Plough and the Stars all opened at the Abbey - as well as contemporary classics from the likes of Sebastian Barry, Brian Friel and Frank McGuinness.

“Director Jordan knows how to make a classic feel invigorating again” The Irish Times

RUPERT EVERETT, FREDDIE FOX, Cal macaninch star in

The Judas Kiss by David Hare Directed by Neil Armfield

“Moving and funny” Daily Mail Hollywood star Rupert Everett plays Oscar Wilde, with Freddie Fox as Lord Alfred Douglas, in David Hare’s compelling drama about the power of allconsuming love and the cruelty of betrayal. It is 1895 and Wilde’s masterpiece, The Importance of Being Earnest, is playing in the West End after a triumphant premiere but already the wheels are in motion which will lead to his imprisonment, downfall and vilification. Forced to make a choice between his lover and freedom, the ever-romantic Wilde embarks on a course towards self-destruction. Rupert Everett has championed the work of Oscar Wilde on both stage and screen, and on both sides of the Atlantic. He shot to fame in Julian Mitchell’s play and subsequent film of Another Country. Since then, his leading screen roles have included the multi award-winning My Best Friend’s Wedding, film versions of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest and An Ideal Husband, Dance with a Stranger, The Madness of King George, St Trinian's and he voiced Prince Charming in Shrek. He made his Broadway debut in 2009 in Blithe Spirit and recently starred in Pygmalion in the West End.

Playing Bosie is Freddie Fox, one of the most exciting young actors in the UK. He starred as Edwin Drood in the BBC’s adaptation of The Mystery of Edwin Drood, played Marilyn in Worried About the Boy and his West End roles include Noel Coward’s Hay Fever and Terence Rattigan’s Cause Célèbre. The cast also includes Cal Macaninch, who plays valet Andrew Lang in Downton Abbey. For more than thirty years David Hare has been a major figure on the British and international stage. His award-winning work includes Racing Demon, Plenty, Amy’s View, Skylight, The Permanent Way and Stuff Happens and he was Oscar-nominated for The Hours and The Reader. He was the recipient of the 2011 PEN/Pinter Prize, which is awarded to a British writer of outstanding literary merit in memory of Harold Pinter.

The London and Broadway Award-winning production Tuesday 30th October – Saturday 3rd November

GWEN TAYLOR and DON WARRINGTON star in

Driving Miss Daisy by Alfred Uhry Directed by David Esbjornson

“Overwhelmingly touching” Independent on Sunday

“A delight” Sunday Times Having broken records on Broadway and played to sold-out audiences in London’s West End, starring Vanessa Redgrave and James Earl Jones, David Esbjornson’s award-winning production has dazzled audiences and critics alike. Having won the 2012 Whatsonstage Award for Best Revival, this heart-warming and humorous play is now on tour across the UK for a strictly limited season. Inspired by the Oscar-winning hit film, Driving Miss Daisy is the charming, poignant and utterly compelling tale of the unlikely, long-lasting friendship that blossoms between a prickly, elderly southern matriarch, Daisy Werthan (Gwen Taylor) and her kind-hearted chauffeur, Hoke Colburn (Don Warrington). As the wheels turn and the decades roll by against a backdrop of prejudice, inequality and civil unrest, the pair slowly transcend their differences and ultimately grow to rely on each other far more than either would ever have expected. Gwen Taylor has recently enjoyed a dramatic exit from her role in Coronation Street where she played Anne, the mother of Frank Foster. She has

numerous acclaimed television credits to her name including Heartbeat, Doc Martin, Barbara, A Bit of a Do and Duty Free. Her stage credits include Shirley Valentine, Lettice and Lovage and Top Girls and she played Gertrude in Sir Peter Hall’s Hamlet. Don Warrington is loved and best known for playing Philip Smith in the classic television comedy Rising Damp alongside Leonard Rossiter. Other television appearances include Lewis, Red Dwarf, Lovejoy, Doctor Who, Casualty, Manchild and Death in Paradise. He has worked extensively with the RSC and National Theatre.

“Uhry’s play amounts to a plea for more kindness in the world and its principals make it with conviction and dignity”

English Touring Opera presents

Albert Herring Benjamin Britten The Lighthouse Peter Maxwell Davies by

by

“The most energetic and enterprising operatic company in the country” Spectator Having received rave reviews for its Spring 2012 season, English Touring Opera returns to Bath with two highly theatrical operas written in the 20th century. Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring is a classic, comic depiction of English village life. It describes the election by village committee of a shy local lad in a grocer’s shop as May King – a title normally awarded as May Queen to a virtuous girl! Naturally, the crowning of the May King does not go quite as planned, and poor (or lucky) Albert Herring ends up straying from the path of virtue. A genuinely hilarious satire, Albert Herring is a masterpiece, with a score of great beauty. ETO’s new production is conducted by Michael Rosewell, a Britten expert, and directed by Christopher Rolls (nominated for a 2011 Olivier Award for Les Parents Terrible at the Donmar Warehouse).

Peter Maxwell Davies’s most frequently performed opera, The Lighthouse, is based on a real-life account of the mysterious disappearance of three lighthouse keepers on the Flannan Islands, Scotland over Christmas, 1900. Intense and suspenseful, this thrilling work describes the claustrophobic conditions at the lighthouse, and the court hearing at which the relief keepers give their account of the incident. Maxwell Davies's theatrical score ratchets up the tension with consummate skill. Moments of lyrical beauty, banjo-accompanied ballads, and hymn-inspired movements lead to a powerful, percussive conclusion. This is modern English music at its most theatrically effective.

MATHEW HORNE in

Charley’s Aunt by Brandon Thomas Directed by Ian Talbot

“Riotously funny” The Stage It’s Oxford, in the early 1890s. Lovestruck undergraduates Jack and Charley are planning to invite their girlfriends, Kitty and Amy to lunch. The imminent arrival of Charley’s wealthy aunt, Donna Lucia from Brazil (where the nuts come from), provides the boys with the perfect chaperone. But when Donna is delayed, scuppering their romantic plans, Jack blackmails fellow student, Lord Fancourt Babberley, into impersonating Charley’s Aunt. When Charley’s REAL aunt unexpectedly appears the uproar begins… Brandon Thomas's comedy, with its side-splitting mix of chases, scenes of mistaken identity, conversations at crossed purposes and wildly improbable coincidences, is one of the most entertaining farces of all time. When Charley’s Aunt opened in 1892 it broke all box office records and it has been a perennial favourite ever since. Star of the BBC's BAFTA award-winning sitcom Gavin & Stacey, Mathew Horne’s television appearances include The Catherine Tate Show, Worried about the Boy, and Horne and Corden He co-starred with Imelda Staunton in the West End production of Entertaining Mr Sloane and featured as Henry's Dad in the film Horrid Henry. He recently filmed the highly-anticipated new BBC3 sitcom Bad Education.

Mathew Horne Artistic Director of Regent's Park Open Air Theatre for 20 years, Ian Talbot was Oliviernominated for The Pirates of Penzance, High Society and Lady Be Good.

The Sound Of Music Music by Richard Rodgers Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II Book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse The final collaboration between the legendary Rodgers and Hammerstein, The Sound of Music is probably the most famous musical ever written. The motion picture version remains the most popular movie musical of all time and brought Julie Andrews to international stardom. The album alone sold over 20 million copies. When a novice nun proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched by the Mother Superior to become a governess to the seven children of a widowed naval officer. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon, they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain’s immediate service in their navy. The family’s narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. The much-loved songs from The Sound of Music are too numerous to mention, but include My Favourite Things, Do-Re-Mi, Climb Ev’ry Mountain and Edelweiss. Rowan Atkinson in

Quartermaine's Terms by Simon Gray Directed by Richard Eyre Set in the 1960s in an English language school for foreigners, this tragicomic play is a humorous but ultimately moving account of several years in the lives of seven teachers. At the heart of the group is St. John Quartermaine (Rowan Atkinson) – kind, pleasant and agreeable, but utterly hopeless as a teacher. An almost permanent feature in the staff room, he's always available to listen to the problems of his self-obsessed colleagues. But when a new Principal is appointed, Quartermaine’s future looks precarious... This quintessentially British drama is written by Simon Gray with his characteristic sparkling wit. Rowan Atkinson first came to national attention in the renowned Amnesty International show The Secret Policeman’s Ball and in the BBC satirical comedy series Not the Nine O’Clock News. In 1983, He and writer Richard Curtis created their “situation tragedy” The Black Adder for the BBC: that series and the three subsequent written by Richard and Ben Elton won a host of awards, including personal awards for Rowan Atkinson's performance.

with Richard Curtis and Robin Driscoll. Mr Bean has been screened in over 240 countries and transformed into an animated series and two feature films that Rowan co-produced, Bean and Mr Bean’s Holiday. Other films include Never Say Never Again, The Lion King (for which he provided the voice of Zazu), The Witches, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Johnny English, Love Actually and Johnny English Reborn. Quartermaine’s Terms will be Rowan Atkinson’s first appearance in a play for almost 25 years. He first appeared in the West End in 1981 in Rowan Atkinson in Revue, produced by Michael Codron, for which he won a SWET award. Subsequently he starred in The New Revue, The Nerd, The Sneeze and most recently as Fagin in Sir Cameron Mackintosh’s revival of the musical Oliver!, for which he received an Olivier Award nomination. Director of the National Theatre from 1988 -1997, Richard Eyre has won numerous awards. His acclaimed theatre productions range from Private Lives to Guys and Dolls and Mary Poppins. He is directing Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2 for BBC2's 2012 Shakespeare Season.

NICHOLA McAULIFFE, CHRIS HARRIS and JON MONIE star in

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs With dancers from the Dorothy Coleborn School of Dance Directed by CHRIS HARRIS Mirror Mirror on the wall, which is the best panto of all? It has to be Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the Theatre Royal Bath, of course!

This year, for only the second time ever in the Theatre Royal’s illustrious pantomime history, we present the classic fairy story, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs… Snow White has skin as white as snow and lips as red as rubies. No wonder a magic mirror declares her to be ‘the fairest of them all’. But not in the view of her wicked stepmother, who flies into a jealous rage and demands her death. The beautiful princess is forced to flee to safety at the home of the seven dwarfs. But who is the curious old crone selling apples door to door? And can true love’s kiss really save the day? Hi Ho! We are delighted to announce that playing the Wicked Queen will be the Olivier Award-winning Nichola McAuliffe, who starred as the evil Baroness in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in the West End and is known for her television roles in Surgical Spirit and Coronation Street. The West’s best-loved Dame, Chris Harris will be returning to play Nurse Nelly, seven genuinely little people will be playing the parts of Snow White’s friends and protectors and hilarious local comic, Jon Monie will play Muddles. Snow White is based on the stories of the Brothers Grimm and was made popular by Disney in 1937 in the first ever feature-length cartoon which became the biggest box office hit of its time. It has only ever been performed once before at the Theatre Royal – in the 1991/92 panto season.

“ A genuinely funny evening...had me helpless with laughter, gasping for breath as tears poured down my cheeks”  Whatsonstage “ Delivers colour, spectacle, song, dance and, above all, fun by the bucketful” Bristol Evening Post “ A great family show which will be enjoyed by grandparents and toddlers alike.” Gloucester Gazette (Reviews from 2011/12’s Dick Whittington)

Nominated for the Best Children’s Play in the TMA Awards 2009 and the Adrienne Benham Award for Children’s Theatre Writing 2010 this acclaimed new adaptation of Johanna Spyri's much-loved story, was originally performed by Northern Broadsides. “A unique, lovable show that is guaranteed to keep the kids amused this Christmas”

THE MONSTER IN THE HALL by David Greig

Myrtle Theatre presents

UP DOWN BOY by Sue Shields

Duck Macatarsney cares for her biker dad whose MS is getting increasingly bad. The two of them are just about surviving when one morning the Duke wakes up blind and the Duck hears that the Social Services are coming to take her away. The Monster in the Hall follows Duck as she tries to protect her world from the terrifying prospect of change.

Matty is off to college in an hour – and he’s left it to Mum to pack his suitcase. She won't miss the slamming doors, the queue for the bathroom and the phone bills. But Matty is no ordinary teenager. Will his Mum cope without him? Will he cope with the challenges that lie ahead? And how will they fit the life-size model of Buffy the Vampire Slayer into the back of the car?

A low-budget Indie comedy musical about a girl on the verge of a nervous breakdown played out by four actors and a big fat motorbike which goes vrrooommm.

This honest and uplifting play was inspired by the extraordinary life story of a boy with Down’s syndrome, and his mother’s humorous and idiosyncratic perspective on bringing him up.

Theatre Alibi presents

by Daniel Jamieson

More than anything Jelly loves drawing - on pavements, on walls, on the beach, everywhere. But she still says she’s rubbish at art. Then one day she finds a secret garden full of giant ferns, palm trees and strange, beautiful cabbages. And stranger things too – plants made out of gloves and shoes, a stone sculpture and an old woman calling for help. The old woman is Mags, a world famous sculptor! Little does Jelly know that making friends with Mags will change the way she looks at things forever… Cabbage Heart shows you really can do what you like best if you just stop thinking you can’t, whether you’re 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or 110.

The egg YPT presents

By David Lane Directed by Sita Calvert-Ennals Bankrupt, isolated and in a state of collapse, a onceproud nation falls apart at the seams. Nostalgic for empire and thirsty for revenge, a small town politician presents a hero to the masses: a posterboy for conscription. The future of the nation hangs in the balance, but at a time of intense change those in power must confront the truth of who they are - and who they might become. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, I Am England offers a unique perspective on political power, authoritarianism and social justice from the generation whose stories are yet to be written.

Special Events

Literary Events are presented in association with

Friday 28th September My Old Man: A Personal History Of Music Hall With John Major

Friday 5th October Days Like This: An Exhilarating Half Century Working In The Media With Nicholas Owen

Friday 2nd November It’s All About The Dog: Life, Love And War With The World’s Bravest Dog With Dave Hayhoe and Treo

Music hall was one of the glories of Victorian England. Sentimental, vulgar, and class-conscious, this was the world that John Major’s father Tom entered at the age of 21 as a comedian and singer. In My Old Man, the former Prime Minister uses his father’s story as a springboard for telling the entertaining history of the music hall, from its origins in Elizabethan times through to its heyday in the nineteenth century and decline with the rise of radio and cinema in the twentieth century.

What is it really like to front a TV programme when everything is going wrong? Or to interview a Prime Minister? Or to cross swords with irate business tycoons or senior Royals? Nicholas Owen talks about doing just that. His new memoir follows his zig zag journey from a local paper, via Fleet Street in its heyday, to many years of high-profile presentation of TV news. Along with the darker times, including his leading role in ITN’s reporting of the death and funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, are many lighter moments and experiences such as his appearance on Strictly Come Dancing.

Former sergeant Dave Hayhoe tells the incredible story of the unbreakable bond he forged with Treo, the world’s most highly-decorated dog, whilst doing the most dangerous job in the world - sniffing out bombs in Afghanistan. It is a story of tragedy and triumph, pathos and laughter as one man and his best friend dare all to ensure that no lives are lost.

Packed with colourful anecdotes about the great performers of the day, this warmhearted history conjures up a lost age. LUNCH: Braised beef with mushrooms, mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables; fresh fruit tart with cream; coffee V: Lentil and caramelised onion cabbage parcel with onion jus

LUNCH: Fillet of salmon with herb crust, crushed new potatoes and seasonal vegetables; Baked vanilla cheesecake with berry compote; coffee V: Tomato, goat’s cheese and pepper millefeuille with tomato sauce

Their awards include the PDSA Dickin Medal, widely regarded as the ‘animal Victoria Cross’ and the Crufts Friends For Life Award. Both Dave and Treo are now retired and share a home in rural Cheshire. They will both be in Bath for this talk. LUNCH: Chicken breast on sweet potato mash with basil cream sauce and seasonal vegetables; coffee profiteroles with dark chocolate sauce; coffee V: Roast butternut squash and sage pithivier with rocket salad

Friday 30th November Relish: My Life On A Plate with Prue Leith

This will be held in the Park restaurant and hosted and cooked by their Michelin-starred Executive Chef Hywel Jones who has been at the hotel for eight years. He was last year's winner of the Welsh heat for The Great British Menu.

Prue Leith has played a key role in the revolution of Britain’s eating habits. Born in South Africa, Prue came to London in the early 1960s, set up a successful catering company, and opened Leith’s Restaurant, a food lovers’ oasis in London’s then gastronomic desert. By the mid-seventies she was a regular food columnist on the Daily Mail, had published several cookbooks and opened Leith’s School of Food and Wine. She is currently a judge on The Great British Menu.

Chef's choice of canapés will be served on arrival at 12 30pm and lunch will be served at 12.45pm. Roast breast of Everleigh Estate pheasant, buttered cabbage and dauphinois fondant. Tahitian vanilla cream, glazed apples, cinnamon doughnuts. Cost: £40 per person (numbers are strictly limited) to include two course, lunch, a glass of wine and coffee.

Prue Leith is forthright about her love life; her mother’s senility; her husband’s death; the theft of her savings, and falling in love at sixty-six. Above all, Relish reflects one lucky woman’s incredible zest for life. LUNCH: Smoked haddock and spinach fishcakes with mixed leaves and buttered new potatoes and lemon mayonnaise; chocolate and strawberry pavlova; coffee V: Leek, spinach and gruyere tart served warm with mixed leaves and buttered new potatoes

All events are £22.50 including lunch, £10 to listen only - (unless specified). All events begin at 12 noon with lunch at 1.15pm unless specified. V: Vegetarian options must be booked in advance for all events. Events will take place at the Theatre Royal Bath – location to be decided nearer the time.
