ictoria's capital, Melbourne, sits on the Yarra River and around the shores of Port Phillip Bay. Acclaimed for its sense of style and elegance, Melbourne boasts glamorous festivals and events; including several of Australia’s best gay and lesbian community events. Melbourne is also home to some of Australia's best shopping, a lively passion for eating and drinking, and a flourishing interest in the arts. Restored and preserved nineteenth-century architecture, built following the discovery of gold, provides a heady reminder of a prosperous age, while beautifully tended parks and gardens present a therapeutic respite from the pace of city life.
Melbourne and Victoria host some of Australia's most prestigious events throughout the year including the Australian Open Tennis Championships in January, the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in March, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show in March and April and the Melbourne International Arts Festival in October. Towards the end of the year there is the Spring Racing Carnival culminating in the Melbourne Cup in November. Melbourne's gay community really cranks up for its city festivals with thousands joining in the over-the-top street parties, overflowing clubs, a pride march, and a carnival. Hotels get booked up in advance so it's best to make reservations weeks before. Home to Australia’s only full time gay radio broadcaster JOY 94.9, there’s no doubt that Melbourne is the gay capital of Australia. Melbourne plays host to gay festivals from January to November every year. Be sure to hit the Midsumma Festival in January which takes over the city and ends with a beach party on St. Kilda Beach. Check out the OUT Down Under Website for more information on Melbourne’s annual festivals. Melbourne boasts a diverse and rich gay scene that is bound to entertain and intrigue you, regardless of what your interest or bent is. Basically the city is divided into two gay centres, Northside (Abbotsford, Collingwood, Fitzroy, Northcote, and Brunswick) and Southside (Windsor, Prahran, South Yarra, Richmond, and South Melbourne) divided by the Yarra River. Check out our write up for both areas under ‘Play’….

With the first OUT Down Under edition, for the Gold Coast, being such a great success; the team and I were so excited to work on this edition. We have thoroughly enjoyed putting OUT Down Under Melbourne together for the gay and lesbian community to use and love when they visit Melbourne. Melbourne, being one of my favourite Australian cities, has so much to offer and so many fun and exciting things to do. Once again I am proud to have found so many gay friendly businesses who have come forward to support us and our readers. And look forward to sending my own friends from the gay and lesbian community to Melbourne to visit them. All the long hours put in to create the second edition of OUT Down Under for our readers were well worth it. This has been another amazing journey and has taught the OUT Down Under team a lot of things we didn’t already know about Melbourne and I hope it does the same for all the readers. Melbourne boasts a diverse and rich gay scene that is bound to entertain and intrigue you as it did us. Enjoy the second edition of OUT Down Under and have a great time in Melbourne
