Tenhills Waterfront Park

We propose a new Waterfront park that would be green, sustainable, and diverse and create a better connection to the tenhills neighborhood and Assembly square area. The aim is to generate new urban strategies and resilent designs to address sea-level rising and focus on connecting the area that is segregated by highways and major roads. The key to this project is to intertwine the landscape with an elevated walkway and existing public infrastructure to create different scenarios for the waterfront. With a new 10 feet tall hill, this will enable a system to mitigate flooding along the Mystic River. By blending an elevated walkway for connection between the water and architecture, this maneuver enables the landscape and infrastructure on the lower urban level to create a unique spatial experience. The system gives the waterfront a modern aesthetic that offers recreational opportunities as well as an invitation to the public space.

Tree-top Canopy

The tree-top canopy allows the visters take a closer look to the trees as well as views across the down landscape. Focusing on vister’s need and materiality, the elevated walkway is designed to connect people with nature and serve as an escape from their busy life.

Amphitheater

An open air vunue surrounded by trees that frames the water behind the stage for mutipule uses, ranging from music performance, entertainment, or sports. Walkway comes out to the water, providing viewing point toward both the river and the performance area.

Viewing platform

The cafe is connected to the pathway that extends out to the river allowing the users to enjoy the river view and the breeze while connecting people with the surrounding nature.

Floating Deck

Water recreational activities that take place on the water, including boating, swimming, fishing. People could rent a kayake, paddling board or a sail boat or they could spend their time on the beach and sunbathing in a nice weather.

02 BIKE LOCK

Lowell acted as a major industrial center in 1826, mainly for the textile industry. It features one of the largest canal systems in the country. Looking across the Concord River, Lowell Locks gatehouse controls the flow of the water, and the lock acts as a device to raise or lower boats to a different level. We want to bring in the idea of changing levels by emphasizing double-height or triple-height space on each level, connecting people, on or off bikes, from the ground level to the roof. Different ramps or stairs provide different experiences when circulating through the building, allowing users to travel through different steps of the bike-making process. Car networks have created a lot of empty space and excess asphalt, have left excess parking areas around the Merrimack River and the site, and have caused irreparable damage to the planet’s ozone layer. Biking is the most energy-efficient mode of transportation, and we’re encouraging people to bike more and to reduce the carbon footprint per person. The Aluminum frame of the bike reflects the industrial sense and the wheels reflect the mill factory that thrives during the time. The whole building’s structure is heavy but visually lighter because of the facade showing how we can transform the old, ugly car parking garage of the past into a new, attractive, living bike garage, that acts as a sustainable hub for Lowell. We want to create a carbon-free makerspace while reflecting the elements of Lowell’s history and revising the concept of the garage.

03 THE GRID

The East Boston Area is in need of a new central hub to bring communities together. This project creates a multi use Cultural center to join ends of the city. Site 1 is understood as the door to our site and draws people to the center of our hub. In this space we offer study areas, a library and an outdoot theater ,and a cafe. Site 2 creates a center space for both rest and movement, offering both a covered and uncovered patio to enjoy lunch after visiting cafes, restaurants or markets. There is also a fitness center for the active people that exercise along the greenway. Site 3 features a restaurant and a bike shop that connects programs from adjoining sites and creates a moment of rest in the central courtyard. Finally site 4 offers a diverse amount of markets, space for vendors and a stepped seating area to enjoy the greenway and passerby. Overall, this project will bring people together in this diverse area to rest, interact and pass through the center of East Boston.

Program Diagram

The ground floor plan features a public program with benches and bike shops along the greenway. The Greenway is 5 feet lower than the earth, and multiple stairs and ramps allow pedestrians to walk up and down between the building and the greenway. The upper floor, the apartment features the study room, daycare for the elderly and children, and the game room relate to enclosed courtyard space on the third and fourth floors. On the fifth floor, a rooftop kitchen opens to the sky so people can invite their friends over for a barbeque and enjoy the view over East Boston. Next to the rooftop kitchen, we have a gym that overlooks the other two buildings, The greenway extension, and The Maverick Market.

All of the communal space are connected throughout the apartment providing easy access for all residents. The units are placed perpendicular to the greenway, allowing cross ventilation and easier access to sun while providing a nice view toward the street and the greenway. The columns structure system gives the freedom creating void space and organizing the dwelling unit. The Grid has five circulation cores that split the building into six blocks to avoid long corridors.

Nubian Square Performing Arts Center

To investigate the interstices between contemporary music, poetry, and architecture. To discover / uncover and diagrammatically articulate compositional and spatial concepts, familiar to all three disciplines, for the purpose of conceptually informing the design of the Nubian Square Performing Arts Center.

This project aims to create a building that participate in public life and stimulate the social interaction. The main concept is all about the experience when circulating the buiding. The front facade shows the hierachy of a grand staircase that guide the community to the upper floor. The entrance for the auditorium and the gallery is on the second floor with a pavilion that provides the public a cozy experience overlooking the green space below. The outdoor performance is a open and airy space with a glass ceiling on the top. Bringing back the community and create a cohesive network by easy pedestrian access throughout the cafe, staff working area, performance space, the art gallery and the green space.
