Wreck sends three to hospital, ends in DWI charges for driver By Terry Lane Staff Writer
Three passengers were transported to the hospital and one person arrested after Wrightsville Beach police said the driver of a car fleeing police during the early morning fog and rain caused a car crash in the town’s central business district. Graham Noah Lease, 25, of
Leland, was charged with DWI, resisting an officer and hit and run resulting in serious injury after the 2 a.m. crash at the intersection of Causeway Drive and North Lumina Avenue, near the front windows of the Wings Beachwear store at 82 S Lumina Ave. Lease’s bond was set at $10,000. The Chevy Cavalier driven by Lease collided with a truck used
by the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Animal Services Unit. Neither Lease nor the driver of the truck, a county employee, were injured. However, three passengers in the car driven by Lease did suffer injuries, police said. Additionally, Wrightsville Beach police said that had the car driven by Lease not hit the n See WRECK Page 2

The Wrightsville Beach Planning Board will review a proposal to renovate a former convenience store that has been vacant for several years and convert the property into a restaurant with boat slips. A public notice for the Tuesday, March 6 meeting
of the town’s planning board shows that the proposal includes converting the existing store into a restaurant with an outdoor, detached shade structure to be used as a seating area, as well as installing a pier connected to a floating dock with nine boat slips, and install one transient dock in Kenan Creek. The developers are seeking a conditional use permit for the
project. The proposal is the first for the property, last a Scotchman convenience store, since the Wrightsville Beach Board of Aldermen rejected a plan in September 2015 that would have included a single-family home on the lot at 100 West Salisbury St. The board rejected n See RESTAURANT Page 2
Officials offer update, details on beach sand project By Terry Lane Staff Writer
Spewing sand and water at a rate of about 20 cubic yards a minute, the 30-inch pipe in front of Wrightsville Beach’s Columbia Street resembled a geyser as it gushed the dredged earth in front of a pair of bulldozers waiting to mold it into place. The two-month, $9.4 million project will replace nearly 700,000 cubic yards of sand on Wrightsville Beach, mostly in the area in between the Blockade Runner Beach Resort at Seashore Street and the Holiday Inn Wrightsville Beach at Conch Lane. Officials from the Army Corps of Engineers said the project serves as vital protection for the homes along Wrightsville Beach, potentially saving hundreds of millions in storm damage reduction.
“If we lose the sand and dune, there is nothing to keep hurricane run up waves from getting to the homes and businesses in Wrightsville Beach,” said Army Corps of Engineers project manager Jim Medlock. Crews from Weeks Marine, Inc., a marine construction and dredging contractor based in Cranford, N.J. lift the material from the sea floor in Masonboro Inlet, then pumping it almost three miles south to the construction spots. Access to the approximate 1,000 foot work zones are closed while crews use bulldozers to move the sand into place. “We’re not closing the whole beach, we’re working in segments to try to keep it to a minor inconvenience n See BEACH Page 2

Wrightsville Beach Fire Chief Glen Rogers said none of the injuries were life threatening, though one person’s injuries were described as serious. Two women, both 28, and a man, 26, were injured in the wreck. Wrightsville Beach police said the incident began when an officer was stationed around the crowd at the Palm Room on 11 E. However, after a brief discussion, the driver sped away from the officer and turned left onto North Lumina Avenue. The officer returned to his car to pursue, but due to the early morning fog and Lease’s high rate of speed, officers lost sight of the vehicle before discovering the accident scene, police said. The driver of the county’s animal services vehicle, a sheriff’s deputy, was in the area to respond to a call regarding a wounded owl. Geologists examine the soil dredged from Masonboro Inlet for color, grain size and quality, while coastal engineers study the wave patterns to ensure the sand stays on the beach for as long as possible. “It’s a team effort, there are many people offering input,” Medlock. Project engineers are trying to meet an environmental window with the project, shooting for a late March finish that would beat the turtle nesting season. The project is one of four North Carolina coastal storm risk management projects that are polled together for cost sharing, including Ocean Isle, Kure Beach, Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach. Wrightsville Beach police on Wednesday conducted a forensic analysis of the crash scene, as the department employees one of only five certified collision reconstruction investigators in all of New Hanover County. On Wednesday morning, the officer measured out the distance between skid marks and used a “drag sled,” a portion of
county money generated by the room occupancy tax. The erosion that occurred due to hurricane Matthew also helped produce some federal money for the project. In addition to the environmental protections, the projects also produce recreational benefits, namely in the addition of new beach strand where visitors can spread out, Medlock said. The ‘sand spit’ at Masonboro Inlet produces enough to renourish the beach, officials said. In fact, some of the sand pumped into place was the very same sand that was once there before. With a prevailing wave action traveling north to south, most of the eroded sand ends up further down Wrightsville Beach, eventually making its way to the Masonboro Inlet. Geologist

are searching for high quality sand, which includes a color that “bleaches” with the surrounding sand. In the Masonboro Inlet, the dredge McCaskill pumps 30,000 cubic yards of sand and water through the pipes each day.Only four years old, the dredge is state-of-the-art, said Rolando Serrano, project engineer with the Army Corps of Engineers, and even serves to house some of the crew. “It’s as close to a cruise liner as a dredge gets,” Serrano said. Weeks Marine stations a surveyor on a boat off of the shore, where engineers are able to monitor every yard of sand placed on the beach. That’s because the contract obligates payment by the cubic yard, requiring the company to be able to demonstrate that every grain of the 700,000 cubic yards in the contract are delivered. Though large in scale, the project is executed by Weeks Marine with a crew of little more than a couple of dozen, who work in shifts around the clock.

AREA BRIEFS UNCW Named a Top Producer of Fulbright U.S. Scholars
The University of North Carolina Wilmington has been named a top producer of Fulbright U.S. Scholars for the 2017-18 academic year among master’s institutions. College of Arts and Sciences Dean Aswani Volety and faculty members Ann Potts and Liz Barber each received Fulbright Scholarships, joining the numerous other UNCW faculty members who have been named Fulbright Scholars over the years. “UNCW’s distinguished faculty continues to produce research and expertise with global application and appeal,” Provost Marilyn Sheerer said. “Being recognized again as a leading producer of Fulbright Scholars is a true reflection of UNCW’s ability to foster global learning and expand our already stellar reputation.” Only one university in the same category – Ithaca College – has more Fulbright Scholars (a total of four) than UNCW this academic year. The top-producing U.S. colleges and universities of Fulbright Scholars are recognized annually in The Chronicle of Higher Education. This year’s leading schools were featured in the Feb. 18 edition.
Aswani Volety, dean of UNCW’s College of Arts and Sciences, traveled to Toulouse and Paris, France, and Brussels, Belgium, in October 2017 to develop ideas for increasing faculty, staff and student exchange between UNCW and French academic institutions. Ann Potts, associate dean of Teacher Education and Outreach at the Watson College of Education, will work alongside Department of Educational Leadership associate professor Liz Barber to continue their research in Malwai, Africa, this spring. Potts and Barber take students to Malwai for a month of hands-on research in area schools. Their work focuses on literacy development and providing educators and students with medical and academic resources. The Fulbright Program is a highly competitive, merit-based grant sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and operates in over 125 countries throughout the world. The program was founded by United States Senator J. William Fulbright in 1946 with more than 380,000 people participating in the program since its inception. Excellence in teaching and global engagement are key priorities of UNCW’s Strategic Plan.

Midtown YMCA launches evidencebased cycling classes to benefit those with parkinson’s disease This March, the Midtown YMCA is launching a new cycling class geared specifically to those with Parkinson’s disease. Research conducted at the Cleveland Clinic showed a 35% reduction in Parkinson’s symptoms by the simple act of pedaling a bicycle at a rapid pace – optimally, 80-90 revolutions per minute. While cycling is not a cure for Parkinson’s disease, there is compelling evidence to show that it does make a real difference for many who try it. Parkinson’s disease is a disorder that affects approximately one million Americans and is caused by a lack of the chemical messenger dopamine in the movement centers of the brain. Besides a lack of dopamine, PD can be aggravated by genetic factors, exposure to pesticides or industrial toxins and the process of aging itself. Its three major symptoms are tremor (trembling which usually starts in one hand), rigidity in the trunk or limbs and slowness of movement. It is a progressive disorder, meaning that it typically gets worse over
the years. New treatments are emerging for PD for the purpose of reducing symptoms. The YMCA is launching their Pedal for Parkinson’s classes in effort to address the needs of Parkinson’s patients within our
community. These classes can be easily adapted to individuals with all levels of the disease and are equally valuable to those who have been newly diagnosed as well as those in progressed states of the disease. Classes are designed to empower people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) by optimizing their physical function and helping to delay the progression of symptoms. The YMCA’s Pedal for Parkinson’s class is geared specifically to counteract the movement
challenges experienced by people with PD. Goals for this class are to: • Improve the quality of life for Parkinson’s disease patients and their caregivers • Educate patients, caregivers and the general public about the benefits of maintaining an active lifestyle after a Parkinson’s diagnosis • Support research dedicated to prevention and treatment of Parkinson’s disease These specialized classes will be offered twice a week at the Midtown YMCA to provide an opportunity for Parkinson’s patients to cycle in a comfortable, non-intimidating atmosphere. Pedal for Parkinson’s classes are included with a Y membership and are open to the public for just $10/class. Participants must be diagnosed with Idiopathic PD and complete and submit a signed consent form and medical clearance form before participating. 2018 Carolinas Classic All-Star Basketball Games headed to Wilmington Hosted by the North Carolina Coaches Association and the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association, the 2018 Carolinas Classic All-Star Basketball Games are headed to Wilmington this March. The games are sponsored by House of Raeford Farms FLOCK, the non-profit arm of House of Raeford Farms, with all ticket sale proceeds benefitting the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation. Twenty of North Carolina’s top high school senior boys and girls will face off against 20 of the top players in South Carolina during this year’s Carolinas Classic. The players will be in Wilmington, NC from March 22 – 24, with the boy’s and girl’s tournament games taking place consecutively beginning at 6:00 p.m. on March 24 at John T. Hoggard High School. The North Carolina and South Carolina Coaches Associations will announce specific participants at a later date. “We’re excited to bring the Carolinas Classic games to Wilmington this year and showcase the best of what North Carolina and South Carolina have to offer in the sport of basketball,” said Shell Dula and Phil Weaver, executive directors of the South Carolina and North Carolina Coaches’ Associations, respectively. “These are not only the top 40 players in our two states, but they’re also amazing student athletes who have proven their abilities on and off the court, in the classroom and in their communities.” For the first time since the tournament began 20 years ago, the athletes will participate in community service events, including a visit to the children’s hospital at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, hosting basketball clinics at the Brigade Boys &
Girls Club and the Community Boys & Girls Club, and visiting two New Hanover County elementary schools. “One of our top missions with FLOCK is youth development and making sure the kids in our communities become productive and positive members of our society,” said House of Raeford CEO Bob Johnson. “With the Carolinas Classic, our goal is to not only make a positive impact on these student athletes, but we’re asking them to also make a positive impact on their host community through these volunteer activities.” Additionally, FLOCK will donate all tournament proceeds to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation, whose mission is to improve the health and comfort of patients at the hospital. The proceeds will go directly toward improving the women’s and children’s hospital. “We are honored that House of Raeford has chosen New Hanover Regional Medical Center Betty H. Cameron Women’s & Children’s Hospital as the beneficiary of the 2018 Carolinas Classic,” said Schorr Davis, Vice President of Development and Executive Director of New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation. “This will not only be an exciting event for our community to support and attend, but a wonderful opportunity for our young athletes to come together in competition, while demonstrating leadership, compassion and sportsmanship.” Tickets for the tournament games are $10 for adults and $5 for children and students. Tickets can be purchased online at www.carolinasclassic.com.
