2018 Visitor Impact for New Hanover County; County Spending by Domestic Visitors Increases by Six Percent to $612.92 Million Governor Roy Cooper announced today this week that domestic visitors to and within New Hanover County spent a record $612.92 million in 2018, an increase of 6% from 2017. The data comes from an annual study commissioned by Visit North Carolina, a unit of the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina. “We are pleased to report that tourism spending and direct tourism employment for New Hanover County increased in 2018, representing our eighth consecutive record-breaking year,” states Kim Hufham. “We are further encouraged that New Hanover County Room Occupancy Tax [ROT] collections for fiscal year 2018/2019 also experienced growth. Based on ROT reports for fiscal year July 2018 through June 2019, countywide collections were up 20.39% over prior year, setting a new ROT record for the eighth consecutive year, with over $15.58 million in collections. When tourism revenues are up it not only means more jobs and a better quality of place for our local citizens, it also means more money to fund beach renourishment, the Wilmington Convention Center and other tourism-related projects.” Tourism impact highlights for 2018: • The travel and tourism industry directly employees more than 6,470 in New Hanover County. • Total payroll generated by the tourism industry in New Hanover County was $149.14 million. • State tax revenue generated in New Hanover County totaled $29.54 million through state sales and excise taxes, and taxes on personal
and corporate income. About $24.73 milliion in local taxes were generated from sales and property tax revenue from travel-generated and travel-supported businesses. • Travel-generated state and local tax revenues saved each New Hanover County resident an estimated $228.31. Governor Cooper announced in May that visitors to North Carolina set a record for spending in 2018. The $25.3 billion in total spending represented an increase of 5.6 percent from 2017. These statistics are from the “Economic Impact of Travel on North Carolina Counties 2018,” which can be accessed at partners.visitnc.com/economicimpact-studies. The study was prepared for Visit North Carolina by the U.S. Travel Association. “The numbers confirm the strength of North Carolina’s tourism industry as an anchor of economic development,” said Wit Tuttell, executive director of Visit North Carolina. “As the No. 6 state in the country for overnight visitation, we can attribute our success to the natural beauty and authenticity that visitors experience, and to a passionate effort to inform and inspire travelers. The money they spend benefits everyone by sustaining jobs and reducing our residents’ tax burden.” Statewide highlights include: • State tax receipts as a result of visitor spending rose 4.7 percent to more than $1.3 billion in 2018. • Visitors spend more than $69 million per day in North Carolina. That spending adds $5.64 million per day to state and local tax revenues (about $3.5 million in state taxes and $2.1 million
in local taxes). • The travel and tourism industry directly employees more than 230,000 North Carolinians.
• Each North Carolina household saves on average $532 in state and local taxes as a direct result of visitor spending in the state.

Wilmington Police Expands Its Fleet for Hurricane Season The Wilmington Police Department is expanding its fleet to include vehicles for the upcoming hurricane season. The Department of Defense recently awarded the agency two Oshkosh M-ATV vehicles through the 1033 Law Enforcement Donation - Loan Program. The two vehicles are valued at a combined cost of $1.3 million dollars. The City’s only cost was transporting the units from New Boston, Texas to Wilmington. The total cost for transporting both units was $7000. “Hurricane Florence dumped a lot of water into our City, stalling critical rescue efforts”, says Ralph Evangelous, Chief of Police. “These units will help us to reach our citizens in a timely manner and save thousands of dollars in damages to our fleet.” During Hurricane Florence seven patrol cars received heavy water related storm damage. These M-ATV’s will be used primarily for weather storm response and high water rescue. Due to the amount of water these vehicles can forge, the hardened armored protection, and run flat tires these vehicles will be ideal for response during active hurricane conditions. The new units will be painted black and white to match the standard police fleet with high visibility chevrons installed on the front. The City’s Fleet Management Division will maintain the vehicles. The units are expected to be road ready by October.

New Wilmington Fire Department trucks On Tuesday, August 27th, 2019, the Wilmington Fire Department will officially “roll-in” two new 2019 Pierce Velocity fire trucks. The ceremony for new Engine 1 will be held at Fire Headquarters, located at 801 Market Street, at 11am. The ceremony for Engine 3 will be held the same day at 2pm at Station #3, located at 114 Cinema Drive. Each new engine has the capability of flowing up to 1,750 gallons of water per minute via a Waterous Midship mounted pump supplied by a 500 gallon water tank. The Pierce Velocity firetrucks are equipped with TAK-4® Independent Front Suspension, Cummins L9 Diesel Engine, Command Zone™ electrical system and a Harrison Hydraulic generator. The soon-to-be christened Engine 1 and Engine 3 will also offer our firefighters increased hearing protection with a fully sealed passenger cab, in addition to front and side compartment airbags that will give our firefighters more protection in the event of a side roll over or frontal impact collision. The Hi-Viz LED light and siren package provides greater visibility to the public of our first responders as they are responding to emergencies.
Hurricane Florence repairs underway on Henry Street As part of a second phase of major Hurricane Florence repairs to city infrastructure now underway, crews are making repairs to drainage pipes beneath Henry Street. The $529,000 project involves a repair method that prevents the need to dig up or close the street. Contractor Applied Polymerics of Mt. Airy NC uses existing manholes to access the pipes, and inject foam-like material that fills the pipes’ cracks from within and then hardens. The crews are also removing sand that has gotten into the pipes as a result of the cracks. This work is ongoing beneath Henry Street
from Princess Place to the northern end and also just got started on Caswell Street. It is slated to wrap up next month. The Henry Street work is one of the major projects the city has underway or planned to make needed repairs after Hurricane Florence struck last year. After addressing immediate repairs following the storm, staff worked for several months to identify all the city streets, sidewalks, buildings and drainage infrastructure across the city that need to be repaired. The city also had to get federal officials to inspect and approve each of the repair sites to make sure the city could
receive federal/state reimbursement before the projects could go forward. Because the city has to pay for all of these repairs out-of-pocket with taxpayer dollars, the federal inspections and approval were critical to make sure the city gets reimbursed for as much as possible. So far, the city has spent or appropriated more than $30 million in response to the storm and hopes to get much of that reimbursed. Educational programming including Little Explorers, Discovery Lab, Engineering Challenge, Planetarium Films and more will resume at Cape Fear Museum upon reopening. For information regarding upcoming programs, please visit the website at www.capefearmuseum.com/programs. “The shoulder season between end of summer and the start of school field trips has been selected to complete critical repairs needed at the Museum,” stated Director Sheryl Kingery Mays. “We apologize for any inconvenience during our two-week closure but look forward to reopening with all of our spaces fully functional and ready to welcome visitors and school groups throughout the fall and winter.” The Museum reopens on Tuesday, September 10 and will resume normal visitor hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The Museum is closed on Mondays from Labor Day to Memorial Day.
