INSIDE: Democrats take control of county board, while Rouzer, Davis, Grange retain legislative seats By Terry Lane Staff Writer

New Hanover County Democrats seized control of the board of commissioners, knocked off a state senator, added members to the board of education and put a scare in several other local Republican candidates following the Tuesday, Nov. 7 election. Democratic commissioner

Rob Zapple, the top vote getter, won a second term on the board, while Democrat Julia Olson-Boseman, a former state senator and county commissioner, will return to the board after she earned more votes than Republican Skip Watkins, the current vice-chairman of the board. Republican Eric Lytle placed fourth in voting that awarded the top two candidates with seats on the board. With

Zapple and Olson-Boseman joining current Democratic commissioner Jonathan Barfield, Jr. on the board, Democrats will hold a majority, stripping the chairman’s gavel from Woody White. Meanwhile, Republican state senator Michael Lee was defeated in his effort to win a second full term when former Wilmington mayor Harper Peterson secured a narrow victory, winning by

just 36 votes in a race that saw nearly 86,000 votes cast. A Libertarian candidate who dropped out of the race still earned 3 percent of the votes casts. Democrats also broke the stranglehold that Republicans had on the county board of education, as Stefanie Adams, Judy Justice and Nelson Beaulieu were the top three finishers in that race. Candidate Bill Rivenbark also earned a seat on the board of education, while incumbents Republicans Bruce Shell, Janice Cavenaugh and Don Hayes were all defeated. While Republicans no longer comprise all seven members of the board, they still control four seats and a majority. However, Republicans did hold several local seats in the election that saw more than 88,000 votes cast, 51 percent

of registered voters. Republican Rep. David Rouzer will retain his 7th congressional district seat after capturing 55 percent of the vote in a district that stretches over nine counties from the South Carolina border to the suburbs of Raleigh. Rouzer defeated Dr. Kyle Horton, who captured 51 percent of New Hanover County n See ELECTION Page 2

New venues highlight 24th edition of Cucalorus film festival By Anthony Martinez and Keaton Smith Interns

Cucalorus 24 returns for its 24th year with the same old feel but some new features as well as some slight shifts in venues. This year the filmmakers lounge and Ticketbox will be relocating to the CFCC’s Union Station building at 502 N Front Street. The change in location is primarily to accommodate the growing base of Cucalorus attendees, as Dan states in his blog, “Cucalorus is growing and some of our critical functions needed a bigger pair of pants.” This move has allowed the event to start a

new ticketing system, which they hope “will make the box office experience much easier for everyone.” The change of venue will also be introducing a new filmmakers lounge experience, offering healthy mornings and raucous nights at the newly dubbed “Pegasorus Lounge.” As Dan Brawley puts it in his blog, “each morning you can roll in early for a cup of coffee, a smoothie or even a chair massage and some yoga. And then as the day moves on, you’ll slowly see our cocktail bar take over the kombucha station for an after-evening of spirits and Edward Teach brews.”

Nancy Faye Craig was reunited with “SJ” after the cat was missing for nearly a month.

After nearly a month, missing cat found in neighbors wall By Keaton Smith Intern

Following nearly a month of searching, a Wrightsville Beach resident has been reunited with her beloved pet cat after he was found to have gotten inside the wall of a neighbor’s house. Wrightsville Beach resident Nancy Faye Craig—who lost her cat soon after Hurricane Florence— said her neighbor in the Channel Walk neighborhood had her boyfriend working on the dryer vent in her condo when he

heard sounds coming from the wall. He moved the refrigerator and cut the drywall behind it down. After removing the drywall, there sat the cat named “SJ”, amongst the debris he created from scratching the drywall from the inside. SJ lost some weight as a result of being trapped in the walls for 26 days, but is gaining it back each day. “He was awfully thirsty when he came out An Opera House Production of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde will be held at 8 too,” Craig said. n See CAT Page 2

p.m. at Thalian Hall on Saturday, Nov. 10. Wilmington Theatre Award winner Anna Stromberg will return with her co-star, Burt Grinstead, to present this rendition of the original novella.

The Pegasorus Lounge will still have Cucalorus signature Cuctails, so visitors are encouraged to buy a Peg Pass online for free drinks every day of the event from 2 to 11pm. Another addition of venue will include the Visual/ Sound/Walls lounge located at Whiskey Tango Foxtrot at 111 Grace Street – right between Union Station and Thalian Hall. The Visual/Sound/Walls lounge will be “the heart” of the Cucalorus Stage Festival where anyone can drop by during the day for a Cuctail and stay all night for a fringe-style showcase of experimental theatre, comedy, dance, and music from real good bands. The new venue will still showcase the year’s best music videos which will be playing all day long on several screens, so visitors can drop in and immerse themselves at any time at the Visual/Sound/ Walls lounge. Many of the changes this year are a result of attendants’ feedback in an effort to make Cucalorus easier to navigate. Every narrative feature and every shorts block will play twice, making it easier to see all the films you’ve been reading about. And with their new hub on Front Street, attendants will be just a bit n See CUCALORUS Page 2

Local business supports surf scholarship By Terry Lane Staff Writer

While they may be keeping an on the surf report and squeezing in sessions between classes, it doesn’t mean that Wilmington’s surfing students aren’t staying on top of their schoolwork. And for the twelfth straight year, a handful of these students are getting some help from a Wrightsville Beach business owner and an anonymous donor in the form of a surfing scholarship. The Tower 7/WBLivesurf

Scholarship Fund, which started as a single scholarship more than a decade ago, has now grown into a $60,000 fund that will give 12 students each a $5,000 scholarship, split between two semesters. Several of these recipients were at K-Bueno Mexi-Q Grill on Wednesday, Nov. 7, for a dinner honoring them for their accomplishments. Now a graduate student, it’s Paul Cole’s second time winning the scholarship, which he said has proved helpful as he works

to complete his graduate degree in data science. “The surfing community supports education,” Cole said. “They encourage you, they push you, they make you who you are. It’s a good group of people from all backgrounds.” While a solid grade point average is one of the criteria for the scholarship, applicants also had to describe how they have been involved in the surfing community. Many of them are n See SCHOLARSHIP Page 2

voters, but wasn’t able to overcome Rouzer’s lead in neighboring counties. In the state House of Representative, two local Republicans retained their seats after spirited challenges from Democratic newcomers. In the 20th district, which covers the northern area of the county, including the Country Club of Landfall, Republican Rep. Holly Grange won her second full term in the House after beating Democratic newcomer Leslie Cohen by nearly 2,000 votes, capturing 53 percent of the vote. In the 19th district, which includes Wrightsville Beach

and the other county beach towns, Republican Rep. Ted Davis, Jr. won in a closer contest, beating Democrat Marcia Morgan by less than 1,000 votes. Libertarian candidate David Perry took nearly 4 percent of the vote. “Without a doubt it was the worst experience that I have endured during my 22 years as an elected official. I am humbled that the people had enough faith and trust to allow me the privilege of continuing to represent them despite the unbelievable amount of money that was spent, as well as the negative misleading and false ads that were run, in the attempt to defeat me,” Davis wrote in a Facebook post to supporters.

Craig said she wasn’t sure if the sounds the boyfriend heard from the wall were SJ or not because of the amount of people who came forward that had found black cats matching SJ’s description. “It was amazing the amount of people that came forward,” she said. The drywall had been ripped out following Hurricane Florence, and Craig said she thinks he must have jumped in there between the time the wall was taken down and put back up. “We were playing this game we play where I go out, and he sits at the bottom of the stairs and waits for me to pick him up to take him inside,” Craig said. “This time, though, I went to the mailbox and stayed out for a couple hours. Then, I got hungry for dinner, and I went to get him. He was gone, nowhere to be found. Vanished.” Craig has lived in Wrightsville Beach since 1984, and said SJ is her “only child” with “four furry legs, instead of two.” The fact that he is so young, Craig believes, is what probably saved his life. “I told him he’s on home restriction for the rest of his life now,” Craig said, laughing.

members of the University of North Carolina Wilmington surfing club, just like Tower 7 owner Joshua Vach, one of two donors who support the scholarship. One of the 12 scholarship recipients, computer science and finance major Britton Deets, said the funds are key after his rental house was flooded in Hurricane Florence. “It’s awesome to get the encouragement and support from the surfing community,” said Deets, the current president of the UNCW surfing club. “From Carolina Beach all the

way to Surf City, we’re willing to support each other.” Brian Tracy, who along with Vach was a past president of the UNCW surfing club, helps manage the scholarship, which he said is expected to continue to grow. “Thanks to our generous donors, the scholarship has been growing and it will continue to grow,” Tracy said. This year’s scholarship winners include Paul Cole, Alicya Simmons, Britton Deets, Conner Lester, Miles Abernathy, Erik Paulson, Justin Lor, Haley Kubinak, Joshua Jones, Cole Mulholland, Katy Nickel and Willow Rae.

Here are a few of the events scheduled for this year’s Cucalorus: SAS Brand Director and documentarian, Susan Ellis, is going to hold a keynote speech called “Speaking the Same Language: Connecting with Technology Brands Today” at the Connect Theatre on the fifth floor of the CFCC Union Station building on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 4:30 p.m. Ellis will speak about how using languages that unite technology and people can increase success for any brand. Rhiannon Giddens, a MacArthur Genius Grant recipient, and John Jeremiah Sullivan, a contributing writer to the New York Times Magazine, will show their research on the 120th anniversary of the Wilmington Race Riot of 1898 on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 3 p.m. at Thalian Hall. Giddens is going to perform songs she wrote that are inspired by the 1898 riot. Following the performance, Giddens and Sullivan will lead a walk from Thalian Hall to the 1898 memorial on North 3rd Street for a sunset vigil. A “documentary portrait” will screen that morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Cameron Art Museum. Giddens will take questions following the film. Comedian Ikechukwu Ufomadu will perform his show at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday where the host “deftly slips in and out of personas, impressions, voices, songs, sketches, games, and interviews; a wry approach to the business of showing.” The event will be held at the V/S/W Lounge. An Opera House Production of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde will be held at 8 p.m. at Thalian Hall on Saturday, Nov. 10. North Carolina Receives Extension for FEMA Individual Assistance Sign Up North Carolinians Have Until December 13 to Register with FEMA North Carolina homeowners and renters who sustained property damage or loss caused by Hurricane Florence will now have an extra 30 days, or until December 13, 2018, to register for Individual Assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA). The extension comes after the state requested additional time. “I appreciate the extension of this important deadline so that more North Carolinians can have time to sign up and register for FEMA assistance,” Gov. Cooper said. “I encourage anyone who sustained damage to register with FEMA.” The Individual Assistance program provides assistance to homeowners and renters with temporary housing, essential home repairs, personal property replacement, and serious disaster-related needs. Disaster assistance grants are not taxable income and will not

affect eligibility for Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and other federal and state programs. Grants do not have to be repaid to the federal government. Here’s how North Carolinians can register for help from FEMA: • Visit DisasterAssistance.gov or Disaster Assistance.gov/es for Spanish. • Call 800-621-3362 or 800-462-7585 (TTY) anytime from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. local time seven days a week until further notice. Multilingual operators are available. • Visit a disaster recovery center. To find center locations and current hours, download the FEMA mobile app English and Spanish, the ReadyNC app, or visit FEMA. gov/DRC. Center hours and operations are adjusted based on visitor demand. • In-person American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters are available by calling or texting 202-655-8824. Go online to watch a video on how to request an American Sign Language interpreter.
