The news stories that drew readers’ attention in 2015 ranged from a dramatic car wreck involving bank robbers, to an apex predator washing ashore, to an unexpected winner of the annual holiday boat parade. Any sign of local commercial development also interested readers. The top online articles of 2015 represent a variety of topics but a common theme connects them all: stories out of Wrightsville Beach.
rash closes intersection of Wrightsville 1 CAvenue and Eastwood Road Three Washington, D.C., men were arrested by the Wilmington Police Department following a high-speed chase ending in a five-vehicle crash at the intersection of Eastwood Road and Wrightsville Avenue March 23. That morning, police responded to reports that the Bank of America on North Front Street was robbed. The three suspects fled in a dark-colored Toyota and were pursued by police down Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. The chase lasted approximately six minutes, ending when the suspects’ vehicle sideswiped a van turning into the intersection at Wrightsville Avenue and Eastwood Road, triggering a chain of collisions in both directions. The suspects’ vehicle was split in half and the road was strewn with money. All three men were arrested
reat white shark washes onto 2 GWrightsville Beach An 11-foot-long great white shark weighing approximately 687 pounds washed up dead at the south end of Wrightsville Beach on Dec. 7. The shark had bite marks as big as 15 inches on both of its sides and it also had its left pectoral fin torn off. University of North Carolina Wilmington researchers performed a necropsy Dec. 8 and were able to determine when it died — likely three or four days before washing on shore — but not why.
3 Poe’s Tavern opens in Wrightsville Beach
Poe’s Tavern, a gourmet burger joint with locations in Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, and Atlantic Beach, Florida, opened in Wrightsville Beach the last weekend in October. Poe’s is the newest addition to the Harbor Island business district on Old Causeway Drive, a strip that now includes breakfast and pizza restaurants, a smoothie café, a wine and beer shop and a mercantile. The town recently addressed the issue of limited parking in the growing district by adding parking meters, despite concerns by some of the business owners.

Town recommends denial of Red Dog’s ABC permit
The Wrightsville Beach Board of Aldermen voted Nov. 12 to recommend the Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) commission deny Red Dog’s owner Charlie Maultsby’s request for a new alcohol permit. The town and Red Dog’s have clashed in court twice over the years because as a private club, the bar is operating in violation of the town’s zoning ordinances, but both times the judge determined the bar’s ABC permit trumped town laws. Maultsby learned that permit was no longer valid because it was filed under different ownership, and to get a new permit he needed the town’s recommendation, which the ABC commission will take into account when making its final decision.
5 M otor yacht a total loss, no charges filed
A 60-foot Sea Ray motor yacht, Somewhere in Time, sank Oct. 31 after its veteran delivery captain, John Wampler of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, hit the north jetty of Masonboro Inlet. Sgt. David Jordan of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, who investigated the incident, said Wampler did
not see the low wall leading to the north jetty at Masonboro Inlet. The wall is submerged at high tide. Wrightsville Beach Bluewater Yacht Sales broker Kelly White confirmed by text message the 60-foot Sea Ray Sun Dancer 2007 was listed with him at the time for $699,000.
Low-pressure system brings heavy rain, 6 high surf The combined effects of a local low-pressure system and Hurricane Joaquin spinning offshore caused record rainfall and major erosion at Wrightsville Beach during the first week in October. One of the beach’s lifeguard stands toppled in the high surf and 50 percent of the island’s north end dunes were eroded, public works director Mike Vukelich said. When it was over, the system had dumped 12 to more than 15 inches of rain across New Hanover County, flooding roads and causing damage in some places.
7 Smallest boat wins grand prize
The smallest boat in Wrightsville Beach’s 33rd annual N.C. Holiday Flotilla boat parade, Brent Jernigan’s 11.5-foot pontoon boat, won Best in Show on Nov. 28. Jernigan and his brother, Chris Jernigan, used strings of blue Christmas lights to turn the tiny craft into a blue marlin. Twenty-three captains entered the 2015 boat parade, which was followed by a fireworks display.
auseway Bridge crash breaks railing, 8 Cresults in DUI charge A Durham woman, Julia Moore MacCallum, 55, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol Oct. 11 after crashing the truck she was driving into the railing of the Causeway Bridge in Wrightsville Beach. MacCallum was turning from Waynick Boulevard onto the Causeway Bridge when she overshot the turn and crashed into the railing, damaging it and blowing her vehicle’s front tire. Wrightsville Beach police said MacCallum registered a 0.22 blood alcohol concentration.
evelopers release plan for former 9 DScotchman lot Developers released plans in late September to redevelop a vacant Salisbury Street lot, in an effort to sway Wrightsville Beach town leaders to rezone part of the lot from commercial to residential. The proposal called for developers to build a single-family home on the residential lot and the neighboring business, Wrightsville SUP, to use the empty building on the commercial lot for retail. The lot has been on the market for two years and several developers have tried and failed to design a feasible project, but the board of aldermen voted against the rezoning during its October meeting.
10 New project proposed for MOI building
While the Scotchman lot remains vacant, another abandoned commercial property, the former location of the Middle of the Island, will be redeveloped after town leaders voted Nov. 12 to let property owner and developer Nathan Sanders remodel the building for retail use. Sanders first brought his plans before the town’s planning board Oct. 6. While Sanders expects renovations to take years, the project represents further growth in the Harbor Island business district and Wrightsville Beach’s commercial development.

September Don Gilstrap died on Monday, Sept. 7, with his family at his side. The 90-year-old WWII veteran was known for constructing and selling the boat-a-miniums at Seapath Marina, as well as serving as president of the Seapath Homeowners Association for eight years and president of the Seapath Yacht Club for 13 years. The Wrightsville Beach Board of Aldermen voted Thursday, Sept. 10, to appeal FEMA’s preliminary flood zone maps in an attempt to secure a lower-risk flood zone — and lower flood insurance rates — for Harbor Island. An independent study found most of Harbor Island should be in the lower-risk AE zone rather than the highest-risk VE zone. North Carolina General Assembly agreed to increase the share of the state gas tax that goes toward dredging inlets less than 16 feet deep as part of the 2015-17 state budget legislation. The fund will grow $18 million over the former allocation of a little over $6 million. The funds will pay for periodic dredging of inlets up and down the coast, such as Masonboro Inlet. Biology and marine biology students at the University of North Carolina Wilmington will study the ecological impacts of manufactured chemicals on estuarine fish after the university received a $399,884 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency. The grant will fund a threeyear project to be conducted in UNCW’s Center for Marine Science located on the Intracoastal Waterway, as well as inside an on-campus laboratory in Dobo Hall.

LIFESTYLES Making a Difference in the Cape Fear Region
Tabling New Year’s traditions with a By Fanny Slater, Contributing Writer
M
any of the world’s most ingrained New Year’s rituals revolve around feasting on menus packed with purposeful items. Just as language varies from culture to culture, so do the particulars of these customary dishes. Despite the varying flavor profiles, the end goal for sharing this sustenance is the same. Each of these edible traditions is said to symbolize prosperity, longevity, and all around forward motion for the coming year. But whether it’s stretched, stringy noodles representing endurance or succulent, fatty pork implying that happiness lies ahead, the beauty flourishes in the fact that food brings people together. Time to table these tasty traditions. Here are eight of the most common New Year’s eats from around the world.
modern twist
and each individual round signifies a good month. Pros recommend pre-seeding and peeling the grapes for easier one-per-second chowing. But be mindful of which grapes present a bitter flavor. Sour bites stand for sour months.
Italy La Festa di San Silvestro is how Italy brings in the New Year with a bang. The celebration that takes place at Piazza del Popolo in Rome includes fireworks but, as with most Italian get-togethers, food steals the starring role. Lentils — which have been eaten since the Roman times — are the focal point. An abundance of these miniature seeds signifies an excess of riches for the upcoming year. The legumes are often paired with a cotechino, a large spiced sausage, or a zampone, a dried and cured stuffed pig’s trotter with spicy ground up pork — which Italians, like Southerners, believe predicts a fruitful year ahead.
American South When it comes to welcoming the New Year, the American South knows how to fix a banquet chockfull of tradition. These folks line their tables with familiar favorites all said to have special meaning. When it comes to Lowcountry cuisine, various folklore traces these foods back to African and West Indian civilizations. First up is the Hoppin’ John, a dish full of superstitious symbolism. It includes pork-scented field or black-eyed peas that, because of their resemblance to coins, are believed to invite good fortune and humility. The same story goes for the cooked leafy greens, like kale, collards, or cabbage, which all bear resemblance to dollar bills. Every meal needs a centerpiece, so Southerners break out tender, salty pork in all seasonings and sizes. Thanks to its high fat content, ham is served as a way to ring in a rich New Year filled with joy. The pig’s rotund shape is also emblematic of success and progress. What better way to sop up all those savory drippings than buttery cornbread? This starch — beaming with a likeness to bright, shiny gold — is the Southern staple that rounds out this fortune-filled feast.
Japan In Japanese households, families customarily honor the current year’s passing by devouring a big bowl of buckwheat noodles as the clock strikes 12. But the midnight snack should be slurped with caution. Breaking the noodles is considered bad juju. In this practice, which dates back to the 17th century, each strand symbolizes an extensive, prosperous life so the lengthier, the better. As the Japanese honor this occasion one mouthful at a time, they refer to this dish as toshikoshiudon, which means “from one year to another.”
The Netherlands In many regions, reveling in the New Year with ringshaped foods represents coming full circle. The Dutch nosh on donuts, while in Denmark and Norway kransekage is the creation of choice. This decorated wreath cake is composed of marzipan, a sweet confection made with almond meal, and layered in concentric rings.
Hidden Treasures
Spain In Spain, la Vispera de Año Nuevo (New Year’s Eve) celebrations come to a close with a quick round of midnight grapes. Emphasis on “quick” as one of 12 grapes is popped into the mouth following each stroke as the clock tolls midnight. This ceremonial custom has been in place for well over 100 years and began as a way for winemakers in the Alicante region to use up excess grapes. Just as Americans gather in Times Square, Spaniards head to Puerta del Sol in Madrid, gathering at the front of the clock tower to anxiously await midnight’s chime. Grapes are recognized as a forecast of the year to come,

Though not always in circular form, a handful of other cultures also celebrate with cake. However, it’s what’s on the inside that counts, with hidden treasures being a routine holiday habit. The Greeks stick surprises in their scrumptious coffee-scented Vasilopita, and the French in their rich, creamy gateau. Mexicans tuck trinkets in their fruit-dotted Rosca de Reyes, and Bulgarians in their flaky banitsa. Whoever discovers the buried knick-knack (typically a gold coin or plastic figurine) is said to merit a flourishing fate. No matter what is used to welcome the New Year, whether it’s chomping Hoppin’ John or sifting for surprises in layers of pastry, the real purpose is to rejoice in life, love, and tasty traditions that bring everyone to the table.

Shared by the partakers of Jesus and released by a glorious sound (1 Cor 10:17 - 18 KJV) 17 - For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. 18 - Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? (1 Cor 10:21 KJV) Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils. (Phil 1:7 KJV) Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace. (Heb 2:14 KJV) Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; (Heb 3:14 KJV) For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end; (1 Pet 4:13 KJV) But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
