New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office charged a convicted sex offender with the kidnapping of a 6-year-old Wilmington girl Wednesday, Sept. 14 after she was discovered the next day in a wooded area following a police search that involved several agencies. Douglas Nelson Edwards, 46, of 302 Patalanda Drive in Wilmington, was charged with first-degree kidnapping, indecent liberties with a child and two counts of parole violation. He is in New Hanover County Jail on a $9 million bond. The sheriff’s office issued an Amber Alert for the girl shortly after her family reported she was abducted from the Royal Palms Mobile Home Park at about 4:50 p.m. on Wednesday. Witnesses said the suspect carried the girl away on a moped and drove into the woods. She n See KIDNAPPING Page 5

Runners reflect on race history after ‘perfect’ triathlon conditions By Terry Lane Staff Writer

A familiar face crossed the finish line first at the Wilmington YMCA Sprint Triathlon on Sept. 17. Wrightsville Beach resident Matthew Wisthoff won the race for the fifth time, posting his fastest-ever time. But for the veteran local athlete, he was still 35 seconds off of his goal of breaking the one-hour mark. Wisthoff won with a time of 1:00:35. “The conditions were perfect,” Wisthoff said. “It was a little windy, but that didn’t slow us down too much.” Top finishers described a race helped by favorable temperatures, mild currents for the open-water swim and mostly light winds. The race begins with a 1,350-yard open-water swim between the Blockade Runner and the transient dock at Seapath Marina. It

When the historic racing yacht America outraced a powerful English ship in 1851, it started a sailing movement in the United States that helped give birth to the Carolina Yacht Club. Now, the local sailing club that was established just two years after that influential victory will be hosting a replica of the classic schooner for members and visitors to tour upon its arrival Friday, Sept. 23. “America represents everything the Carolina Yacht Club was created to do,” said club manager Kevin Smith. “The yacht club was founded around local sailors and the same spirit of sailing that fueled America’s success.” The America replica will be docked at the yacht club and staff has organized free public tours this weekend. These tours, taking place Friday, Saturday and Monday, will allow viewers to step aboard the 139-foot-long schooner and talk with the captain and crew. Carolina Yacht Club has also provided the opportunity for the

When a swimmer went missing off Wrightsville Beach on June 26, lifeguards and police patrolled up and down the beach with trucks, all-terrain vehicles and Jet Skis. A day later, the Wilmington Police Department flew in its SABLE helicopter over the beach, looking for signs of the swimmer that was never found. For rescues and incidents such as this one, a new tool available to the Wrightsville Beach Fire Department will quickly give rescuers an eye-in-the-sky that could be crucial. As part of an academic study, the fire department has been awarded use of a Phantom 3 Advanced unmanned aerial vehicle. The drone, with its 360-degree rotating highdefinition camera, can help Wrightsville Beach first responders in a variety of rescue and emergency situations. Fire Chief Glen Rogers said this summer presented several examples of incidents where a drone would be useful. For the missing swimmer, he was never found and

Sailor overcomes injury to sail the East Coast By Terry Lane Staff Writer

As a young man in Burlington, Vermont, Johnny Markwith was given a 14-foot sailboat, and soon it was impossible to separate him from the waters of Lake Champlain. That gift from a neighbor started a lifelong love of sailing so strong that it even a paralyzed arm couldn’t weaken it. Instead, a debilitating injury made Markwith’s love of sailing that much stronger. It’s something people in Wrightsville Beach recently discovered after the seafarer spent several weeks anchored in town, offering locals the sailing experience while sharing his story of perseverance and perspective. “I love taking people out sailing. I want to encourage people to experience sailing,” said Markwith, who turned an injury that cost him use of his right arm into a vagabond lifestyle on the water. “It’s a way of life n See SAILOR Page 5

After a hit-and-run accident robbed Johnny Markwith of the use of his right arm, the sailor from Vermont is sailing the East Coast solo, showing that the injury won’t serve as an obstacle to his passion for sailing. Markwith recently anchored in Banks Channel for about six weeks, where he is pictured sailing on Sept. 18.

Study to consider range of options for town’s water, sewer system By Terry Lane Staff Writer

The engineering firm that will study long-term solutions for Wrightsville Beach’s aging water and sewer system will consider recommendations that range from buying supplemental water for the peak summer season to selling the system to the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA). Representatives of Raleighbased McKim & Creed presented the town’s ad-hoc water and sewer committee with the scope of the study Monday, Sept. 19. The study will take about five months to complete and will examine everything from the taste of the water to the value of the town’s water and sewer infrastructure. “If the two systems are going

to be integrated, it’s important to make sure you have an accurate picture of everything going on,” said Tony Boahn, vice president of McKim & Creed. After evaluating the system, the

“If the two systems are going to be integrated, it’s important to make sure you have an accurate picture of everything going on.” firm will present recommendations that consider five potential options for the town, each of which will come with challenges, Boahn said. On one end, the town could

purchase water from the neighboring CFPUA to supplement the town’s water supply from May to September, when use rises sharply. However, since the two systems use different decontamination methods and have different infrastructure, there could be a noticeable change in water quality and taste. Boahn said studying the quality of blended water samples would be part of the overall report. Other similar options could include the town buying water from the CFPUA to store until peak season or the town purchasing all of its water from the neighboring system. On the opposite end, the study will also look at the value of the system to evaluate the benefits of selling the town’s water and sewer system to the CFPUA, which would then operate it. Boahn also described a hybrid plan that could involve the town selling some assets on the mainland to CFPUA while continuing its operations of the island system. In addition to the recommendations, the report will also include a 10-year capital improvement plan, Boahn said. In related news, public works director Bill Squires said the valve exercising program currently being conducted on the system has discovered two broken valves and one that was closed. The tests are projected to be completed faster than the two-month schedule, Squires said, as staff is able to test nearly 50 a day. The town’s system has 550 valves, but weather and other conditions can affect the exercising schedule. Squires said the valves need to be checked regularly to keep them working properly. “That’s the problem when we have a main break,” Squires said. “We think the valve is closed, but it’s not.” Email terrylane@luminanews.com

Coastal Fed rainwater runoff project a ‘significant success’ By Terry Lane Staff Writer

A project to reduce storm water runoff pollution in Wrightsville Beach has resulted in significantly reduced bacteria concentrations in areas where the project was tested, the results of the two-year North Carolina Coastal Federation study recently published in an international scientific journal reveal. The study showed the project, which used filtration systems and civil engineering to reduce rainwater flow into Banks Channel, reduced fecal coliform bacteria by 57 percent, Enterococcus bacteria by 71 percent and storm water discharge by 50 percent. The results were published in the July edition of the Journal of Coastal Research. Other coastal areas around the country and the world can soon replicate the example being set in Wrightsville Beach. Tracy Skrabal, coastal scientist and southeast regional manager for the Coastal Federation, said the study’s results are important for balancing economic development with environmental conservation. “It’s a very significant success. It highlights the specific approaches that we wish to get out to an international audience,” Skrabal said of the study’s results and their publication. “If we’re going to reverse water-quality degradation, you can’t stop development, you can disconnect the pathways of storm water from our waterways. Our goal is to take these successes and

approaches, now that we can say they are costeffective and work, and encourage others to implement them.” The increased bacteria concentration that results from storm water runoff, which includes fecal coliform bacteria from pets, wildlife and even people, can create issues for both swimmers and shellfish populations. These bacteria concentrations usually spike around trash cans, Skrabal said. The Coastal Federation has grant funding to continue to implement these infrastructure changes in 12 areas around the region. This will include the retrofitting of the storm drain by the Blockade Runner Beach Resort to add a filtration system similar to the one added to the storm drain pipe at Iula Street, which was included in the study. The federation chose the Blockade Runner site because it is often used by swimmers. It also often tests poorly after heavy rain. The project is scheduled to start in December. Skrabal said the federation is still considering other areas in which to implement the improvements, but that it will be targeting locations near Bradley and Hewletts creeks. The changes could include the suite of options that can include filtration systems, wales, earthen dams, rain gardens, curb cuts and cisterns. “These approaches aren’t rocket science, but it is fairly innovative,” Skrabal said. “With results like these, it’s going to get a lot of attention.” Email terrylane@luminanews.com

Fire department awards two scholarships

The Wrightsville Beach Fire Department awarded $2,000 scholarships to two students as part of the Wrightsville Beach Fire Department Relief Fund Scholarship. Garrett McQueen, a fire equipment operator and lead intern for the department, will use his portion of the funds to finance a graduate degree in criminal justice from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Loren Williams, the daughter of lead fire equipment operator Jeff Williams, will use her scholarship as she begins her study of meteorology at the University of North Carolina Charlotte this year. The scholarship is designed to help local members of the department and their children seek higher education. The scholarship fund is created through the remaining balance of the N.C. Firemen’s Relief Fund, which is funded through insurance premiums and distributed to each department.

Seafood market starts scholarship fishing tournament in former employee’s memory

Motts Channel Seafood will host an October fishing tournament that’s being launched to fund a scholarship to honor the memory of a former employee who was killed in an automobile accident. The Mandie Phillips Memorial Inshore/Offshore Fishing Tournament will encourage participation from all levels, from the occasional angler to the tournaments veterans, with all proceeds going toward a scholarship fund to help local Appalachian State University college students with education expenses. The Oct. 13-15 tournament will award prizes for flounder, speckled

trout and Spanish mackerel in the inshore categories and wahoo, tuna, and king mackerel for the offshore categories. Additionally, to remember Phillips’ Aug. 9, 1993, birthday, any angler that brings in a fish weighing 8.9 pounds or 19.93 pounds will win a piece of Phillips’ artwork. Phillips, a long-time employee of Motts Channel Seafood in Wrightsville Beach, died in a December 2014 car crash. “Mandie had a zest for life that was contagious to those around her,” said Alison Long, chairperson for the nonprofit organization sponsoring the tournament. “She always had a positive outlook and really knew how to connect with people. It is our hope that this tournament can help college students who share her passion for making the world a better place.”

Editorial/Opinion My thoughts B y P at B r a d f o r d

I once worked with a woman who believed Americans didn’t walk on the moon in the ’60s, that the moonwalk was all a government sham to beat out the Russkies. Crazy right? Now here I am, having believed national and international news reporting was true — and it is not. I am not saying I believe our moon landing was fake, nope, but I do honestly believe that the mainstream media does not tell us the truth, that the news we tune into is what others want us to believe, some or much of it is slanted or not even true. And I am one of those people who when I catch you in a lie, I question everything you have ever told me. Now I question everything. So when I saw Hillary Clinton collapse at the 9/11 memorial service, I watched it over and over and over. First thing, I had an issue with the blue round glasses — something odd there (turns out people with Parkinson’s disease also wear them). Then there was the number of people holding her up, yet she still collapsed and they dragged her into the van. The Secret Service whisked her out of there. It is very clear something was terribly wrong with Mrs. Clinton, even though it looks like her primary physician was who had her by the arm. Next, the media was held in place, not allowed to leave for at least an hour. Not allowed to follow. Why? And why no press outrage?

Ninety minutes later a miraculously revived Clinton was out on the street, looking fabulous and without any Secret Service detail. They tell us it was too hot for her on an 80-degree day. She was dehydrated. Then she had been diagnosed with pneumonia.

It is very clear something was terribly wrong with Mrs. Clinton, even though it looks like her primary physician was who had her by the arm. The facts simply don’t add up. I have had heat stroke; it put me out commission for the remainder of the day. I have also had pneumonia. Each year roughly 1 million Americans are hospitalized with pneumonia, 50,000 of them dying. There is no way the woman dragged into that van was the same woman who came out on that street looking incredibly marvelous 90 minutes later. Why is the media not all over this? What is going on?

Go back to WikiLeaks’ leak of emails that show how the Democrats rigged the primary election to see proof that the Democratic National Committee could call up a major network and kill or slant a story. The Clinton campaign is lying about her health and the media is covering it up. But, if I am wrong, what could they have pumped her full of to send her back out onto the street so rapidly? Last Monday I heard my first conspiracy story: the Clinton body double. I scoffed. Then I started checking. Darn if the woman who came out onto the New York sidewalk wearing the same blue glasses isn’t thinner than pear-shaped Hillary. This woman is younger, with fewer and different wrinkles. The nose and the hair are not the same. Mrs. Clinton’s hair appeared unwashed at the 9/11 ceremony. Are we to believe she was rushed semiconscious to her daughter’s building, recovered completely, showered, styled her hair, put on full makeup and her same clothes to glibly be out on the street, sans her protective detail and handlers, 90 minutes later? Compare the photos yourself. Google “Clinton body double.” The woman at the 9/11 ceremony does not look well before the collapse. The woman after is the picture of health, vitality. I am not buying it. Side-by-side photos compare Clinton’s hand in the air with the woman on the street that Sunday, the same hand in the air. The fingers are different lengths. It turns out Mrs. Clinton does have a famous body double. If it wasn’t her, there must be another. I believe Mrs. Clinton is ill — very ill, debilitatingly ill. And the family or campaign or some entity is going to great lengths to hide this from the American people. To fool us. And that makes me very, very unsettled.

Hook, Line & Sinker Anglers still waiting on fall fishing By Skylar Walters

Fall fishing can’t get here soon enough for a lot of the anglers in our area as warm and humid weather continues. Add to that a week of rain, compliments of the remnants of Julia, and you got the making for a bunch of sour grapes. The good news, though, is that the month of September is coming to a close and more times than not, when September ends and the water temperatures start to come down, the really good fishing begins. Inshore, it has been much of the same with flounder and red drum filling up the reports. Speckled trout have also started to make a good showing, mainly in the lower Cape Fear River, but as the conditions start to cool, look for the trout just about anywhere. Live minnows rigged on Carolina Rigs placed around the docks and creek mouths are an almost guaranteed bite. Flounder have been found in the deeper creeks and the area inlets with some fish pushing 5 pounds. From the surf, there are reports of pompano and Virginia mullet being caught in good numbers with fresh shrimp and sand fleas working the best as bait. Some red drum, black drum and flounder have been caught on cut bait and strips. As the rain subsides in the coming days, the surf fishing should really take off. Along the beach, the Spanish mackerel have shown up again, although this week’s weather may hamper

them until the water clears. Trolled Clark Spoons are the ticket if it’s quantity you want, while floating some of the larger minnows or smaller menhaden around the reefs will more than likely produce some of the larger Spanish. Bluefish are once again being reported and they, too, should be showing up in numbers once the cooler air gets in here. King mackerel are being found closer to the beach by the live baiters and this, too, will get better as the month progresses. A stray cobia is not out of the question as anglers have seen some of them over the past few weeks. Menhaden are cruising the shoreline so once the seas lay down, dropping a hooked bait in or near a school of menhaden might just be a good idea. Offshore, the bottom fishing has been good all summer and it will continue to be decent through the month of November. As water temperatures fall, fishing a little deeper water will be necessary. The Gulf Stream will be coming alive in the coming weeks with lots of reports of wahoo being caught. Dolphin and tuna will round out the targeted species. No matter what you fish for, this fall is looking to be a good one, so if the heat has you hunkered down in the a.c., just make sure you’re prepared for when the fishing really gets good.

is believed to have drowned and not surfaced, but an aerial search after he was reported missing might have led to his discovery. In another case from this summer, rescuers spent several minutes searching for a missing swimmer in Masonboro Inlet who had grabbed onto the jetty rocks, where the drone could have given rescuers a quicker scan of the search scene. With a range of 2.1 miles, the drone could have been used for emergency response when a U.S. Marine Corps jet crashed off of Wrightsville Beach in May, when lifeguards were the first to reach the crash site. The program, run by firefighter Sam Proffitt, will help other departments across the country implement their own drone programs as well. Proffitt first examined the utility of UAVs for first responders as part of the public health graduate degree he recently earned from Pennsylvania

State University. To continue the study, the university awarded two drones to local departments for study — one for Wrightsville Beach and one for the Carolina Beach Fire Department. Both locations have advantages that make them ideal for study, Proffitt said, since both lie outside of the 5-mile radius of Wilmington International Airport, where drone flight above 400 feet is prohibited. There are other restrictions on operating the unmanned aerial vehicle. For example, firefighter Mike Arthur is a licensed pilot and must be on scene whenever the drone is use, though he doesn’t have to be at its controls. Proffitt is the only other firefighter certified to pilot the drone, which retails for about $600, but others will receive training, he said. Proffitt will write a study on the drone’s use for Penn State University, which he said will be instructive for other departments as they evaluate ways to utilize the emerging new technology. After the Amber Alert was issued, the sheriff’s office organized an extensive search that included several agencies, including Wilmington, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach police, the State Bureau of Investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. When the girl was discovered, she was “restrained,” but freed with the assistance of nearby civilians, Brewer said. She was taken to the hospital, where she spent two nights before being released,

When I feel the raw power of the sails, there’s something very majestic about it.” Before sailing to Southport, North Carolina, on Tuesday, Sept. 20, Markwith was anchored in Banks Channel for nearly six weeks, often docking his 27-foot Ericson sailboat, Vicky Lynn, at Wynn Plaza and giving new friends the sailing experience. His planned track was to sail north to Boston, but being behind schedule, he visited newly made friends from the area and decided to stay for a while. “I kind of fell in love with this little town. It’s really friendly, it’s got a great beach vibe and great access to land,” Markwith said. His itinerary is to sail south to West

public to purchase tickets to sail on the America. Sailing excursions will occur in groups of up to 73 passengers and will consist of motoring out of the inlet and setting sail for a short period of time. “There may be opportunities for the passengers to help the crew,” Smith said. “In the past, they have asked if passengers would help manually raise the sails. There could be 30 people hauling them up.” America made its mark on history in 1851 when it won England’s £100 Cup regatta. It was the first of many competitions in the history of a race that continues to occur today, though the competition is now known as America’s Cup as a tribute to the first winning vessel. The yacht represents a moment in history when the United States was beginning to showcase its strength in the international community. “Having a really fast boat back then was like having a really fast plane or train today,” said Madeline Flagler, director of Wrightsville Beach Museum of History. “That

Edwards was released on parole April 30 after being

Palm Beach, Florida, for the winter months. It’s a long way from the sailing lifestyle he was leading just two years ago, before it was crushed under the wheels of a hit-and-run driver. Working as a first mate on a 100-plus-foot yacht in West Palm Beach, Florida, Markwith was riding his scooter home from work one June evening when he was hit by a car whose driver never stopped and who was never seen. “I joke that if there were witnesses, I’d have a bigger boat,” Markwith quipped. The accident not only left Markwith with neuropathy in his right arm, robbing him of its use, as well as a broken jaw and neck, but it also left the uninsured man virtually penniless, as medical bills mounted to close to $600,000. In conducting the program, Proffitt said the fire department will be working through a number of issues that come with it. For example, there will be rules on how photos and videos can be used from operations. The fire department analyzed, but deleted, images taken during the Sept. 17 swim portion of the Wilmington YMCA Triathalon, for which nearly 600 competitors swam the waters between the Blockade Runner Beach Resort and Sea Path Marina. Sheriff’s deputies arrested Edwards on Thursday, Sept. 15 on South College Road at about 10 a.m., Brewer said. Sheriff’s detectives had been following him, as well as other registered sex offenders in the area, Brewer said, but made the arrest of Edwards after discovering evidence they said linked him to the crime. The N.C. Sex Offender Registry lists seven registered sex offenders living within three miles of the Lumina News office, which includes one on Wrightsville Beach’s south end on Meier Street. could be rehabilitated, he soon learned that his “flail arm” condition would never heal. “I was kind of devastated,” Markwith said. “I cried. I broke down. I thought about sailing, piano, guitar, all the things that I wasn’t going to be able to do. But I vowed that I was not going to quit.” And he didn’t. The following summer, after returning to Vermont to recuperate, he was back on the water, learning how to navigate a 21-foot sailboat with his dominant right arm confined to a sling. Soon after, he raised the money to purchase the Vicky Lynn, including a little more than $2,000 from online fundraising site Kickstarter, and set out to find a new life on the water. Along the way, he works odd jobs and barters to make ends meet. Markwith said he has embraced

continues with a 20K bicycle race that takes bikers into Wilmington by route of Oleander Drive and Greenfield Loop and Airlie roads, and concludes with a 5K run around Wrightsville Beach’s John Nesbitt Loop. Finishing behind Wisthoff were Tom Clifford at 1:02:14 and Harrison Brown at 1:04:24. Clifford is the founder of Without Limits personal training service, where Wisthoff is one of the coaches. Brown is the track and field coach at Cape Fear Academy. Erin Green of Wilmington was the top female finisher at 1:18:37 with Bridget Phillips finishing second at 1:19:15 and Lindsey Hess taking third with a time of 1:19:53. The YMCA’s Tom Lamont said

many of the participants use the triathlon as a training run for the upcoming Ironman Triathlon, formerly known as the PPD Triathlon. However, the Ironman is a much longer race, taking about five times as long for elite racers to finish. Wisthoff said he isn’t competing in the race, while Clifford will compete in the halfIronman race. Several of the racers reflected on the long history of the Wilmington YMCA Sprint Triathlon, which is one of the oldest triathlon races in the country, and how it creates a sense of community among the racers. “It has more participants because of the history of the race,” Brown said. “It’s great in that respect.” Clifford described the race as storied. It began in 1979, around the time of the first Ironman races in Hawaii, and was originally a

longer race of the “international distance,” stretching as far south as Fort Fisher and finishing in downtown Wilmington. “It’s one of the oldest triathlons in the world,” Clifford said. Lamont said the Wrightsville Beach location is scenic and inviting for visitors, which is why most of the race is now contested within the town limits. For Phillips, who was the top female finisher for the 40 and over Masters division in her second time competing in the race, the race provides competitors with “great energy.” “A lot of people have participated in this race over the years,” said Phillips, who was thrilled to pass her husband Kyle in the run after he passed her on the bike. “There’s a strong sense of community out there.”

the challenge of sailing with use of only one arm, which can include demanding tasks like pulling lines and easing and trimming the sails that are often performed hand-over-hand. “You just learn how to sail differently. I love problem solving. It’s not an obstacle,” he said. “It was a challenge at first, still some days

I have challenges, but my biggest challenge is the weather, same as any other sailor. Other than that, you just figure it out, you make it work.” Markwith said living on the water has helped change his perspective on life, encouraging him to live in the moment. “So many people worry about

yesterday or what they have to do tomorrow,” Markwith said, explaining he has made a mantra of 90 percent attitude, 10 percent effort. “As long as you have a good attitude about something, it will only take a 10 percent effort to accomplish your goals,” he said.

was how things were transported, and it translated to mean you were the top dog.” The victory for America came at a time when Flagler said our nation was beginning to compete economically in the world. The initial win and subsequent 132-year stretch of holding the cup showcased U.S. prestige. The replica of this historic vessel is based out of San Diego, and the chance to see it in Wrightsville Beach is unique, Smith said. This opportunity for the Wrightsville Beach community came as part of an East Coast tour of the replica, where Captain Troy Sears and his crew will serve as official ambassadors of the America’s Cup. The yacht will travel north to Maine before heading back south with its final destination being the 35th America’s Cup, which will be contested in Bermuda in June 2017. “The goal of this tour is to celebrate the event’s storied history and infuse a new level of excitement and involvement in the America’s Cup now and for a generation to come,” Sears said.

THE TWO GREATEST COMMANDS September 22 Matthew 22:36 “Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” MATTHEW 22:34-46 Jesus revealed that all of the Old Testament laws were designed to instruct us how to love God and love others. Therefore, the two commands that dealt directly with loving God and others (Lev. 19:18 and Dt. 6:5) were the most important. The religious leaders had become so obsessed with keeping every minor detail of the law that they had lost sight of its ultimate purpose. They neither loved God nor their fellow man, yet they thought they were keeping the law. The same thing is happening today. Some of the cruelest acts of men

towards their fellow men have been done in the name of the Lord by people who thought they were defending God’s holy commandments. However, if we violate one of the two greatest commandments in an effort to enforce some other commandment, then we are misapplying God’s Word just as these religious Jews did. The Old Testament law and the New Testament concept of grace compels men to the same end, that is to love God and their fellowmen. However, the motivations to this end are different. The Old Testament law motivated men to love God and their fellowman through fear of punishment if they failed to comply. The New Testament concept of grace freely gives men a God-kind of love that is unconditional and tells them to love others as they are loved. It is possible to display actions of holiness, but not love God. It is impossible for God’s kind of love not to produce holiness. Holiness is a fruit and not a root of loving God.
