NAU MAI - WELCOME Tena koe. Nga mihi atu ki a koutou. Nau mai, haere mai, karanga mai! Welcome to Lunasa and the beautiful land of Canaan Downs-Pikikirunga. Thank you for your presence here at Lunasa, for supporting Luminate Trust, and for participating in this special event for Friend of Luminate Members. A big part of the joy of creating Lunasa is that we are spending time together in a space of mutual connection, support, respect, celebration and aroha.
THE SCHEUDLE MAY CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE
NAU MAI - WELCOME
Lughnasadgh (Lunasa) is an ancient seasonal festival midway between summer solstice and autumn equinox: a time for friends and family to gather from far and wide to enjoy music, dancing, sharing knowledge, arts, crafts, food; to celebrate with gratitude the abundance of the harvest, and to honour nature as central to our co-existence. We are delighted to welcome exceptional musicians and dedicated djs to provide us with original and high quality music by day and night. The Lunasa Stage features a range of live and electronic music with influences from world grooves, jazz, blues, gypsy, balkan, klezmer, folk, roots, reggae, soul, funk, house, techno, psytrance, progressive, dub and sacred bass. Te Rā will feature mellow live music, downtempo, chillout, sound journeys, kirtan and more. Hosted improvised jam sessions featuring some of the musicians playing at Lunasa will take place on both music stages. You are welcome to bring an instrument and join in the African drumming & acoustic instruments around the fire at Te Ao Mārama. We are impressed by the quality of the workshop presenters and diversity of the Knowledge and Inspirational Sharing Sessions being offered at Lunasa. So many different topics to inspire, empower, contemplate, discuss and experience within the KISS schedule. The theme for Lunasa is Bio-Optimise and Thrive – “enhancing our internal biology, external environment and power of the mind for optimal health”. There are many ways to approach how we chose to nourish ourselves, take responsibility for our health & fitness, look after the earth and all living beings, develop and maintain a clear and focussed mental state, and optimise our life. The intention at Lunasa is to offer a range of workshops that cover various aspects of this theme along with many other topics, that broadly align with Luminate’s values.
NAU MAI - WELCOME We trust that it is widely understood that Luminate does not necessarily endorse everything that all presenters share, that people are willing to take self-responsibility for what they chose to engage with, and that we are all willing to respect other people’s perspectives. Most of the workshops take place at Te Rā and Te Ao Mārama each day from morning to evening, and several other ones at locations as listed in the KISS schedule. There are several workshops also at the Lunasa Stage that need a big space and sound system.
You may also like to visit Hauora – a peaceful space for holistic health practitioners who are ready to be of service to the needs of the Lunasa community during the event. There are a number of massage therapists all with various different emphasis, sound-healing, assistance with breathing techniques, Mayan Calendar and Human Design readings, and lots more, plus free sessions with Bioptron Light. Bookings can be made with individual practitioners. We have several cafes and food outlets providing nutrient dense organic and vegetarian food, superfood snacks, earth-oven pizza, organic coffee, cacao, chai, juices and plenty more. Arts, crafts, clothes and other items from local artisans are available to browse and buy if you like. We welcome you all to immerse yourself in Lunasa, be present in joyful heartspace, to enjoy the land and its surroundings, relax, replenish, recharge; and as the journey continues, to carry love and light in the world as we activate an ever-deepening connection with ourselves and the expansive wonders of nature.
Aroha nui
THE SCHEUDLE MAY CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE
You can read more about the workshops, presenters and the music artists at the Info Hub.
NAU MAI - WELCOME
Two discussion forums are scheduled towards the end of the event, and you are invited to participate with thoughts and ideas as we create a space to imagine the world we want to live in and how we can thrive and flourish as heart-centered community in resonance with nature.
CAMPING AND INFORMATION CAMPING
CAMPING
Camping is allowed in the open meadows only. You are welcome to use your own materials to create shade and shelter. • Absolutely no camping or parking in the forest or under trees. Beech trees can drop limbs at any time, and the forest needs to be looked after to encourage regeneration. • Fires are not allowed anywhere on the land (other than Lunasa’s permitted event fires). • Noise in the campsite must be minimised out of respect for all others. • Generators & sound systems are not allowed in the Camp Site. • Trading is only permitted by authorised pre-approved Traders in the Village Market. • Everyone agrees to be responsible for any waste that they generate, to pack out all that they bring and to leave no trace. Everyone is responsible for tidying their own campsite after the event and taking all their rubbish & recycling with them to an appropriate re-cycle centre. • For Health & Safety reasons there is a need to minimise vehicle movement in and out of the Camp Site. All vehicles parked in the Camp Site are advised to remain parked for the duration.
THE SCHEUDLE MAY CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE
LIVING WATER Water is provided from a mountain spring source. It is living water and not treated, as many people value access to pure untreated water. However you are welcome to boil or treat the water before drinking if you prefer or if you usually only drink chlorinated water. • Bring your own containers to refill water from the taps provided in the Camp Site and in the Event Site. • Conserve water at all times. • Some solar showers may be provided in the Camp Site, depending on numbers and supply levels. • Use your own solar shower bag if you can to reduce water use. • Only earth-friendly, biodegradable cleaning and washing products can be used on this land. • There is a small stream – Gold Creek - approx. 10-15 mins walk to the north of the Event Site. We imagine that you would know to never use washing products in this stream or other waterways, and do not enter the water if you have sunscreen or other chemical products on your skin.
REGENERATION REGENERATION OF THE NATIVE BEECH FOREST Luminate Trust and the Canaan Downs Collective have been working together since 2010 to encourage regeneration of native forest and biodiversity at Canaan Downs.
THE SCHEUDLE MAY CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE
The land at Canaan Downs has natural hazards, beech trees can drop branches and be unstable. The land geomorphology is karst (limestone) with sink-holes and hidden crevasses amongst many other features. You enter the site at your own risk and are responsible for your own safety and belongings. You are welcome to report anything of concern to the Info Hub. Take care where you drive, camp, walk or ride your bike.
REGENERATION
• The forest is a living ecosystem and is currently showing signs of new regeneration. Any activities that will disturb this process are not permitted. • To minimise impact please walk on existing tracks if possible when visiting the forest, leave branches where they have fallen, and do not disturb the forest floor as this can damage the young seedlings. • The forest is home to the Powelliphanta, the rare giant native snail. Leave any shells as you find them and be careful where you walk. Do not remove the shells as the snails need to eat them for generating new shells. The beautiful snails are an “at risk” species; thank you for caring for them.
ECOLOGY AT LUNASA Environmental consciousness is fundamental to the ethos of Luminate Trust. All members attending Lunasa are invited to engage with a range of strategies that help to manifest the reality of living in resonance with nature. Our own choices can make a huge difference, and each individual has a significant role to play in helping to create a clean environment and a thriving ecology.
MINIMISE IMPACT One of Luminate Trust’s key ecological initiatives is waste minimisation: avoiding creating rubbish in the first place; careful use of resources; and repurposing, re-cycling and upcycling materials where possible.
THE SCHEUDLE MAY CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE
ECOLOGY AT LUNASA
Events run by Luminate Trust minimise the potential for waste to be generated in the first place. For example; • Market Traders are not permitted to sell any single-use products, items in packaging, drinks in cans or bottles, nor food/refreshments in disposable containers. • All cafes at the event only provide food and drinks in ceramic/re-useable plates and cups. • Cafes provide a wide range of healthy food and drinks at very reasonable prices, which reduces the need for people to bring lots of packaged food and greatly minimises the creation of rubbish. • All food scraps can be composted in the facilities provided. • Non-alcohol events help to minimise the creation of rubbish & recycling. • Careful use of resources is considered at all levels of event organisation.
BRING YOUR OWN CONTAINERS • When visiting the cafes at Lunasa, you are welcome to bring your own plate/ cup/cutlery for food and drinks. Items can be washed at the sinks provided by the Village Market. • Bring your own water bottle/container to refill from water supply points in the event site.
ECOLOGY AT LUNASA COMPOSTING
TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR RESOURCES There are no rubbish bins or recycling facilities provided on site at Canaan-Downs. This is a core principle and deliberate educational strategy, whereby all event participants and visitors to the land are required to take self-responsibility for any resources they use and must pack out everything, leaving no trace. Here's some guidance on what to do with any recycling & rubbish, and where to take it after you leave the land: • Sort through all items, wash any cans or containers that can be recycled. • Take your clean recycling and any rubbish items to a council Refuse / Recycling centre, called a Resource Recovery Centre or Transfer Station - see below for directions. • Always avoid “dumping” rubbish and recycling at small re-cycle bins in local
THE SCHEUDLE MAY CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE
• The composting toilets are for biodegradable material only. • Remember that all compost becomes a resource to return to the land. Bring your own rubbish bag for any plastic items such as sanitary pads, tampon applicators, nappies, synthetic wipes etc, never dispose of these in a toilet or composting area, and instead take such items away with you to dispose of responsibly. • Organic matter (grass mowed from the event site) is added to the humanure to form a thermophilic compost system. • The toilets are designed so that urine is collected before contamination with the solids, and this also helps to create an aerobic system. • Urinals are provided alongside for men to use – strictly no stand-up peeing in the toilets – thank you! • Participants are invited to put personal food scraps in a compost enclosure in the Camp Site, and a composting area for food scraps from café meals is provided close to the Village Market. • All food scraps from the Village Market and Luminate’s cafes are composted. Shift Happens - We recommend reading The Humanure Handbook by Joseph Jenkins for detailed information on composting toilets, especially if you feel the urge to take a shift ; )
ECOLOGY AT LUNASA
The design and use of thermophilic aerobic compost toilets, plus composting food leftovers, is a fundamental strategy that Luminate Trust has implemented in every event since we began in 2008. We do this to avoid creating a waste product and instead to create an important resource; to minimise water use and contamination of waterways; and to align with nature in completing the nutrient cycle.
ECOLOGICAL INITIATIVES
ECOLOGY AT LUNASA towns – they get full easily and are only intended for people to deposit an item or two. If you have a bag or more of recycling and/or rubbish, the local communities would love it if you would do the right thing and make the drive, or hitch a ride, to a nearby Refuse /Recycling centre and use the facilities there. • You can buy TDC (Tasman District Council) approved rubbish bags at the supermarket for anything that can’t be recycled, and then there is no further charge to dispose of your rubbish when you take it to the Refuse /Recycling centre in a TDC rubbish bag. • Refuse /Recycling centres are signposted on the main roads and have large facilities including a range of recycling bins and second hand shops. In fact, they are also great places to score lots of handy resources and upcycle other people's “trash”.
LOCATION OF RECYCLING/REFUSE FACILITIES TAKAKA 45 Scott Road, Takaka. On the road between Takaka and Pohara, off Abel Tasman Drive. Open Mon, Wed, Fri, 8.30am – 4pm. Sat 9am – 4pm. Sun 1.30pm – 4pm. Along with rubbish & recycling facilities there is also a second hand shop which sells items reclaimed from going to the dump. You can visit nearby Labyrinth Rocks while you are there.
MOTUEKA Robinson Road, Mariri. On the right off SH6 after leaving Motueka towards Nelson. Open Mon to Sat 9am – 4pm. Sun 1.30pm – 4pm. There is also a recycle shop which sells items reclaimed from going to the dump.
NELSON Nelson ReUse & Recycle Centre, 6 Vivian Place, off Pascoe Street in Tahunanui. (close to airport). Mon to Sat 8am – 4.30pm. Sun 10am – 4.30pm. CANAAN DOWNS COLLECTIVE Canaan Downs is one of New Zealand's most iconic natural outdoor venues, and has a rich history of music events from the late 1990s to present times. The land also featured as one of The Hobbit film locations, with several sites featuring in the trilogy.
The aims and objectives of the Canaan Downs Collective include: 1. Manage the land in an environmentally and financially sustainable manner. 2. Assist regeneration of the existing Beech forest, re-establish native trees, protect and enhance the biodiversity of the native flora and fauna, and provide a sanctuary for at-risk endemic species. 3. Ensure that Canaan Downs remains available and accessible to our communities for future generations for visitor access, events and activities in keeping with the nature of the environment and the values of Canaan Downs Collective. 4. Develop organic food producing initiatives, such as establishing fruit and nut trees and food gardens. 5. Encourage and support the continuation and sustainability of events on the land which attract significant visitors to the region and have benefits to the wider community. Currently there are close to 40 members in the Collective, comprising of people from the local Nelson-Tasman region and throughout New Zealand, and Luminate Festival Trust is also a key member. We welcome more people to join us in the Collective, and help support this project for future generations to be kaitiaki of this unique land. We love to hear from people who are passionate about the land and beauty of nature here, and who feel aligned with our values, aims and objectives. If you would like to know more about how to become a member of the Canaan Downs Collective, you are welcome to email us: canaan@snap.net.nz For more info on the Canaan Downs Collective visit the website www.canaandowns.org
THE SCHEUDLE MAY CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE
The Canaan Downs Collective formed in 2011, and raised sufficient funds to purchase the land, becoming responsible kaitiaki-guardians of this beautiful space. This project is an example of cooperative land ownership, sustainable land management, community participation and innovative environmental initiatives.
