Host Charlotte Smith Charlotte Smith is presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Farming Today and also appears on BBC1’s Countryfile. She was brought up in rural Leicestershire. After a career as a news journalist in local and national TV and radio, and a stint in daytime TV, a conversation in a lift led to a life spent on British farms asking impertinent questions. She is a voluntary director of the Oxford Farming Conference.
COMEDIAN Ian Moore
With a contempt for most forms of physical exertion, Ian’s laid-back delivery is both natural and endearing. His style has made a mark on the live circuit, particularly at London’s famous Comedy Store, and touring with the likes of Lee Evans and Jack Dee. Ian’s take on the world strikes a deep chord - whether he’s pointing out the problems of using the wrong vocabulary in a German branch of Pizza Hut, confessing his uncontrollable urge to tidy up the shelves at Primark or revealing his near-pathological hatred of open-toed footwear. His ability to find humour in almost any subject is frequently showcased on Radio 5 Live’s Fighting Talk. Alongside Jimmy Carr, Ian made such an impact in the sell-out Britcom show at Montreal’s Just For Laughs that he was invited to headline the festival’s finale. Despite his popularity in Canada and Britain, he actually spends much of his time in France - where he’s little understood.

Innovation in sewage treatment through AD Anglian Water Services Ltd In 2005 Anglian Water Services Ltd (AWS) embarked on a strategy to transform the way sewage sludge is treated. Advanced digestion technologies were chosen to produce higher quality biosolids products and maintain agricultural recycling, whilst maximising green power generation. Previously, AWS produced conventionally digested and lime treated cakes, generating just 13 GWh of renewable power. In 2014-15 80% of raw sludge production was treated by nine advanced digestion facilities generating 88.6 GWh of renewable electricity from CHP engines fuelled by the biogas produced. www.anglianwater.co.uk
Severn Trent Water Project - Minworth Energy Generation Expansion The site has installed three new CHP engines capable of producing 5.2 MW and these were fully commissioned in April 2014. The biomethane upgrading system has been installed over 15 months and commissioned in September 2014. The higher efficiencies of the new technologies have seen the site produce 81 GWh of renewable energy during the commissioning year. The full year effect of this is expected to be 100 GWh in 2015/16 as the plant becomes established. This is a massive increase in production beyond the conventional CHP system on the site. www.stwater.co.uk
GENco Innovation is not restricted to new processes and ‘clever’ plants. GENeco believe that the most dramatic improvements can be made by innovative use of data and information that is available from the processes already in place, and using this live information for amending process operations and improving performance. To that end the team have delivered innovative new data processing and monitoring techniques that have delivered 50% increase in renewable energy production in recent years, and seen the company become carbon neutral from an energy perspective. www.geneco.uk.com

shortlist NEW Innovation in community and commercial food waste collection Essex County Council (nominated by Tamar Energy) Essex County Council (ECC) has a clear vision and strategy to achieve an impressive recycling target of 60% by 2020, and realise both the financial and environmental benefits to local households. It seeks to recover the resources inherent in the organic source segregated waste collected, with the aim of sending as much as possible to anaerobic digestion and composting. Tamar Energy’s integrated organic waste treatment services – offering a flexible, commercially competitive solution for both green and food waste collections through its network of anaerobic digestion and composting sites – means it is supporting ECC in delivering this roadmap as quickly as possible. www.essex.gov.uk Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council Over the last five years of the service, NULBC have recycled more than 14,000 tonnes of food waste with LRBE, and are currently collecting over 54 tonnes a week. The food waste service accounts for over 12% of the total recycling rate. This waste produces enough energy to supply over 170 homes in the local area with the total electricity needs. The level of household participation has been excellent with between 60 and 65% of householders engaging with the service. www.newcastle-staffs.gov.uk
Olleco Project – Olleco’s food waste collection service Olleco is a national resource recovery company that recycles organic waste such as used cooking oil and food waste and converts it into sustainable energy. They have spent the last decade growing and improving the oil supply and organic waste collection services through out the country and they’ve led the way in developing the conversion technologies to ensure they extract the maximum benefit from the valuable resources they collect. www.olleco.co.uk Oxford City Council Project – Festive Food Recycling Campaign The project was launched on 1st December 2014. Residents who were already participating were thanked and provided with two free rolls of compostable liners, in addition to new caddies if desired. For those properties not currently on board, an encouraging starter pack was delivered and a ‘no food’ sticker placed on their refuse bin. For properties where the resident was not home and we were unable to determine whether they were recycling their food, a calling card with a colleague’s direct contact details was posted. Each door knock and each individual scenario was fully recorded, ready to incorporate revisits. The success of the campaign is believed to be from the ongoing residential interactions. As a result of the increased performance, the campaign has been included in the yearly financial budget for 2015-16. www.oxford.gov.uk

Making the most of biogas Olleco Olleco have created an organic recycling initiative that provides a circular solution to the problem of waste
produced by the food manufacturing, catering and hospitality sector. In 2014, they completed the construction of their Liverpool recycling centre which features a biodiesel plant powered by the outputs of an anaerobic digestion plant. The project is complex in its design but simple in its concept. Olleco collects waste food and used cooking oils and fats from its 50,000 food industry customers: hotels, restaurants, pubs, fast food outlets and canteens who would otherwise throw waste food into landfill and pour used oils into the drains. Once collected, the wastes are transferred to their recycling centre, which cleverly uses waste food and waste water to produce renewable heat and power which in turn is used to run an on-site conversion technology that produces biodiesel from the used oils and fats. www.olleco.co.uk

shortlist Making the most of digestate HRS Heat Exchangers The system harvests and uses waste heat generated by the plant’s CHP. Using energy recovery technology during the sludge pasteurisation process reduces energy consumption by up to 70% compared to other pasteurisation technology/techniques (that do not incorporate energy recovery equipment) = lower CO2, fuel bill savings, reduced energy consumption. With digestate stocks likely to fluctuate, the system has been designed to handle half loads as equally efficiently as full loads – this half load rate function is unique to HRS technology and overcomes the inefficiencies of stop/starting the equipment and the process, plus helps better manage digestate stock fluctuations. www.hrs-heatexchangers.com
Joint entry – Strathendrick Biogas and Edina Strathendrick Biogas has solved a particular set of problems for a dairy farmer and created a successful business at the same time. Addressed were the specific challenges to the individual and the region and was shown the versatility of AD with both inputs and outputs. These ventures will help to demonstrate what can be achieved by applying a working knowledge of AD and technical expertise to local circumstances. In March this year, the success of the project was cemented by the purchase and commissioning of a second CHP from Edina of 600 kWe and 600 kWth. www.edinauk.com
Nijhuis H20K Ltd The Nijhuis Ammonia Recovery system is an efficient and competitive treatment system for removing and recovering ammonium from anaerobic digested manure, municipal and other organic waste waters. The results show that a stable ammonia removal of more than 80% can be achieved by the NAR system, which enables the possibility for biological treatment to reach discharge limits for surface water. Treated digestate can be reused to dilute substrates to enable digesting poultry manure or other substrates with a high dry matter content. www.nijhuisindustries.com

AD hero, team of the year Agrivert – operations and maintenance team The site staff are supported by a dedicated maintenance team of four who undertake all of the routine scheduled and any unscheduled maintenance which cannot be resolved by the site staff. The maintenance team play a key strategic role across the business through their support of not only the AD sites, but also Agrivert’s two IVCs and three OWC sites. The whole team is headed up by an Operations Manager and a Commissioning and Continuous Improvement Manager. www.veolia.co.uk RUR3 Environmental Ltd – Jacqui MacCaig Jacqui’s expertise is now provided directly to investors and developers of AD plants within the UK and her knowledge of feedstocks has provided the much needed reassurance that is required within this expanding industry. It is certainly believed that Jacqui’s involvement within the AD industry since its start up has given developers and their investors the confidence to enter into this exciting industry. Jacqui continues to develop these relationships and her expertise and knowledge will be an integral part to the expansion of AD in the future. www.rur3.co.uk SGN – Alan Midwinter Alan started with SGN in 1980, as a Governor/Maintenance Apprentice, working his way up through the ranks until 2011 when he joined Commercial Services in the unregulated area of the business as a Projects Manager. In 2013 he was promoted to Business Development Manager. He launched biomethane within the business almost
single-handedly, is self-taught (he studied a great deal of data, became familiar with five different types of biomethane clean up plant, and learned about AD biology) and has become the UK’s expert in biogas production and particularly biomethane clean up plants. www.sgn.co.uk Tamar Energy – operations team In the last year, the Tamar Energy Operations team has worked, with a range of partners and suppliers, to commission three commercial-scale AD plants to full operational status. In adding over 6.5 MW of energy generation and 145,000 tonnes organic waste capacity in just 12 months, the operations team has been instrumental in pushing AD up the UK waste management and renewable energy agenda. www.tamar-energy.com Joint entry – Tamar Energy and QV Foods The team behind the Holbeach AD facility has succeeded in forging an innovative working relationship between two partners at this unique plant. The plant is a joint venture anaerobic digestion facility between leading fresh and prepared vegetable supplier QV Foods and AD operator Tamar Energy in Lincolnshire. The plant is operated by Tamar Energy. The on-site team works very closely with counterparts in QV Foods, to ensure it is a safe, highly efficient treatment facility. It is this close working that has overcome the challenges of bringing together two very different industries. www.tamar-energy.com www.qvfoods.com
