Welcome to the AD & Biogas Industry Awards Ceremony 2019 On behalf of everyone at the Anaerobic Digestion & Bioresources Association (ADBA) and the World Biogas Association (WBA), we’d like to welcome you to the AD & Biogas Industry Awards Ceremony 2019. It has been a year of some challenges and some great successes for the industry both here and abroad, and it is now time to sit down, enjoy a good meal and celebrate the best and brightest of our sector. Worldwide, at over 10%, the AD and biogas industry can make one of the biggest contributions to cutting carbon emissions of any industry, through waste management, energy production, transport and agriculture. By utilising our technology, countries can make a significant contribution towards meeting at least nine of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and their obligations under the Paris Agreement. Global challenges require global solutions, so it is therefore right that we work across borders to meet them together – and celebrate when we do. We cannot solve the climate crisis without cooperation from all countries, and tonight will show what is possible when we innovate and work to the best of our collective abilities. This year we have a truly global shortlist for the awards, with entries from India, Norway, Greece, Germany, Italy, Thailand, Japan, as well as entries from across the UK.This year’s ceremony will see the presentation of twelve different awards, including awards for ‘Best R&D Innovation, ‘Best Biogas Plant’, and ‘Most Circular City’. Seleda Biogas and Fertiliser: Best Use of Organic Matter: Zero Waste Vision

Clever Use of Outputs reve Biogass: G The Magic Factory The Magic Factory utilises substrates from municipal and commercial foodwaste and manure. Digestate is utilised in place of mineral fertiliser in farming. Upgraded biomethane is used as fuel. Substituting mineral fertiliser directly with digestate in a greenhouse is not possible. A new technique termed “digeponics” was therefore developed, where an actively aerated microbial system rich in compost earthworms converts digestate to plant stimulating nutrients. Some of the green CO2 separated from the biomethane in the purification process, is further cleaned and used in the greenhouse for production of carbon capture-tomatoes.

Hexagon Purus GmbH: Reducing Carbon Footprint with Hexagon´s Mobile Pipeline® Biomethane Transportation Solutions Roeslein Alternative Energy produces biomethane through anaerobic digestion. Annually, manure from 250,000 pigs from Smithfield Farms is fermented in large Walmart-sized lagoons. A kilogram of methane, when released without combustion, is estimated to be around 28 times more potent a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Anaerobic digestion systems capture methane and create biomethane, or renewable natural gas (RNG). Hexagon´s composite Mobile Pipeline® modules are used by Roeslein to transport the compressed biomethane in a very efficient way. Two trucks moving six Hexagon´s TITAN4® modules to transport the RNG from the pig farm to the gas grid. By helping its customer to achieve their green commitment of reducing their carbon footprint by 25%, Hexagon plays a vital role in contributing to a sustainable environment.

During the feasibility studies of Seleda biogas plant, much thought had been put into how to make the best use of the digestate output. We came to an understanding that the best way to use it should not only be getting rid of it safely but to create a high value product and brand value for use in agriculture. So Seleda had been designed to be a fully integrated biogas-fertiliser production plant. The fertiliser unit was given as much emphasis as a separate business unit. Closed vessel composting unit, nanocrusher technology and organomineral formulations are the main differentiation points of Seleda.

Strutt and Parker Biogas Ltd: Suffolk Green Renewable CO2 Strutt and Parker Biogas Ltd are one of the first UK based independent producers of Renewable CO2 in the market. The company produces Renewable CO2 via their biogas upgrading plant, verify the CO2 quality and deliver the CO2 directly to the end user. This endeavour ensures that when supplies of CO2 are low, customers can rely on Strutt and Parker Biogas Ltd to provide an alternative supply of CO2 in a local and sustainable way.

West Country Soil Improvement: Bloomin’ Amazing Bloomin’ Amazing is a triple action, no-dig soil enricher which conditions the soil, feeds plants and suppresses weeds, made from the 100% renewable by-product of an award-winning anaerobic digester and biomethane plant. It is peat-free and is produced with minimum carbon footprint. It is lightweight, odour free, pet and family friendly, and high in organic matter. Entering our first full season, we currently sell across 84 outlets from Cornwall to Kent to Manchester. Bloomin’ Amazing represents the essence of the circular economy, helping us realise financial and environmental benefit for what could have been seen as a waste stream.

Best R&D Innovation Award Energy & Waste S.L: Biolimp-Dry Technology for Biogas Drying: The Best Way to Remove Water Vapor and Others This work introduces two types of technologies for biogas drying, based on water vapour removal techniques, that is, cooling, condensation, coalescing filters and change amount of movement. One of them, useful for biogas coming from the mesophilic processes and low flow rates, while the other is for biogas from thermophilic processes. Both technologies apply to both WWTP and landfills. The results of its application demonstrate the high efficiency of elimination of water vapour, other components and the benefits that they provide for the operation of the CHP systems of different biogas producing facilities.

Farmergy Ltd/Wiefferink: Wiefferink Triple Membrane Digester Roof Where space and tariffs are at a premium, in-roof biomethane storage will make your biogas to biomethane plant more competitive without needing extra land for additional biomethane storage. This will give you the operational edge, even if there is no space onsite to store biomethane. In the UK, biomethane attracts subsidies, and any way to maximise on your investment in infrastructure will pay dividends. We have already installed and road-tested this design, the results were given a massive thumbs up. We are entering this award to let you know that this innovative product exists and is ready maximise your biomethane investment.

Kelvin Cave Ltd: Proven Preservative Optimises Plant Performance and Profit Maximising methane production per hectare of forage harvested not only leads to increased plant efficiencies, it also brings other benefits and can significantly increase overall profitability. Independent research conducted on behalf of Kelvin Cave Ltd by Silage Solutions Ltd and Harper Adams University demonstrated that Safesil Pro-treated maize increased biogas yield, quality, and overall profitability, with a ROI of over 40%. A calculator was developed to show potential benefit to a particular business. With approximately 17,670 ha of maize grown in the UK for biogas, using Safesil Pro could equate to an increase in biogas income of £1.3m after costs.

Perlemax Ltd & Partner Viridor: In situ Ammonia Removal in the Desai -Zimmerman Anaerobic Digester Ammonia is a major environmental liability that needs to be remediated from centrate to meet consent, which is an expensive process (approximately £10-£20/m3). The process determines cost, environmental liability, processing time, and range of ammonia that can be treated. The method developed by Desai and Zimmerman for ammonia stripping can be used to remove the ammonia from centrate (£1-£3/m3), has no known limitations on ammonia concentration, can be used in situ in an AD plant, especially as DZAD, which significantly increases the capital efficiencies and removes problems posed by ammonia inhibition. The method is a paradigm shift to the existing technology.

AD Hero of the Year Clayton Hall Farm: Neil Gemmell

Uniflare Group Limited: Marcus Jones

Neil is an AD pioneer, since he obtained planning permission for our plant in 2007. Commissioned in 2011, we became the 9th farm plant in England and the 1st UK onfarm food-waste plant. It is one of the few early farm plants still operating independently. Commissioning an AD plant in those early times entailed being one of the first to contact National Grid, planning, Environment Agency, state vets, insurance, etc. who invariably replied “an AD what?”

Marcus Jones started Uniflare in 2006 manufacturing Landfill Gas Flare stacks for some of the largest landfill companies in the UK. At the end of 2011 Marcus had a good understanding of the AD market. The flares we produced for Landfill gas required us to specialise in manufacturing, fabrication, control, analysis and gas conditioning. Marcus then decided to expand and apply this to the gas phase of the anaerobic digestion process. He looked at where these skills could assist our customers. It was at this point Uniflare moved into completed biogas care form the top of the digesters through to the utilisation. This included Pipe work, instrumentation, biogas cleaning and pressurising ready to supply biogas to the specification required by either the CHP engines or gas upgrading process. Marcus allowed his team to experiment on specialist process designs and funded R&D to ultimately improve our offering and support we give to our customers. Working with Industry Bodies such as ADBA and now the WBA we are exporting our years of knowledge and experience throughout the world. With the support of ADBA and its key members, Uniflare has become a worldwide, UK brand of quality and reliability.

Agrivert Limited: Alexander Maddan Alexander Maddan is the Chief Executive of Agrivert and has worked in the organic waste industry for 25 years, spanning sewage sludge, compost and AD. Over the last ten years Agrivert’s focus has been on design, build and operation of food waste AD plants. With five plants delivered for Agrivert and two for Severn Trent Green Power, this fleet has consistently delivered CHP efficiencies in excess of 98% to produce a profitable and sustainable outcome. Alexander led a team where every aspect of AD, whether it be engineering, feedstock procurement, operations, financing or compliance worked in complete synchronicity to produce the successful synergies that allowed Agrivert to outperform the market. After the sale of UK AD assets to Severn Trent Green Power in 2018, Agrivert has concentrated on operating and maintaining the fleet of AD plants managed by Ingenious and Foresight whilst tendering for food waste AD projects in the Far East and New Zealand.

It is a retrofit of a conventional biogas plant, designed to optimise existing operations and monetise surplus gas via a new product. It is novel in that it produces biomethane vehicle fuel made from agricultural waste. It was progressed with the support of grant funding from Thai and Finnish government agencies. To produce biomethane, the biogas is upgraded using Pressure Swing Adsorption, with technology and know-how from China, India, Italy and Thailand. The output is 90% methane gas, which meets the existing Thai NGV standard.

A joint venture group from Hong Kong contacted Uniflare. They had seen our equipment in operation in the UK and decided that it was our equipment, a UK manufacturer, that would best serve their needs. They needed a unique flare stack and biogas process equipment capable of standing up and staying lit during 140 mile winds. After a number of design meetings and calculations we came up with a design for a typhoon proof 22m tall flare stack. The flare, chiller, booster, carbon plants and SCADA systems were shipped from the UK and installed by local contractors in Hong Kong under our supervision. Our engineers spent time with the site engineers to train them in the use of our equipment. It was necessary for us to provide extended design criteria to the project for them to receive approvals for the site to go into the commissioning phase.

shortlist Best Microdigester JA Yuki Aomori, Hitachi Capital, Komasuya, and Epower Corp: JA Yuki Aomori Biogas Power Plant

Yasasu EMS Private Limited

JA is one of the largest agricultural unions in the world. It faces a challenging future, however, due to aging agriculture population and giant retailers’ direct merchandising from farmers. JA Yuki Aomori, as the second largest yam producer in Japan, used to pay large amount of gate fees to get rid of yam waste from their vegetables sorting facilities. Epower Corp. and two Tokyo Stock Exchange listed companies funded a special purpose company and constructed an onsite biogas plant on JA Yuki Aomori-owned land, and signed a long-term lease with JA Yuki Aomori. Now JA Yuki Aomori, instead of paying gate fees, processes yam waste at the plant and sells biogas to the consortium who in turn sells power to Tohoku Electric Power Company under Feed-In-Tariff.
