PPMA Show 2014 Awards Winners
Award winners highlight strength and breadth of UK manufacturing
The who’s who of the processing and packaging world descended on the National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham on the evening of 30 September for the PPMA Group Industry Awards 2014; the biggest night in the industry calendar. Hosted by renowned comedian and impressionist Rory Bremner, the gala event was headline sponsored by Lloyds Banks and celebrated excellence and innovation from every corner of the industry. Attracting over 400 industry leaders, government representatives and press, the evening comprised a four-course dinner with wine, following which the winners across 14 diverse categories representing each of the Association sectors of PPMA, BARA and UKIVA, were announced. This year’s shortlist was one of the strongest in recent years, presenting our panel of independent judges with some difficult decisions. They were, however, unanimous in their decision that the following companies had shown exceptional talent, innovation and success, proving themselves to be very worthy winners. Congratulations to all!
“The sheer volume and the very high standard in this year’s PPMA Group Industry Awards mean that winners in this year’s competition can be rightly proud of their achievements. To be the best of the best is certainly a description that can be used without any hesitation.”
Our esteemed judges Gail Hunt – Editor, Machinery Update Joe Bush – Editor, Electrical Engineering/Automation Charmaine Bowers – Independent Consultant Ian Frame – Technical Consultant, PPMA Group Dave Hopper – Principal Consultant and Director, Advanced Robotic Technology Warren Clark – Publishing Director, IMVE Magazine Alan Isaacs – Independent Consultant Martin Miller – Independent Consultant

PPMA Show 2014 Awards Winners headline sponsor
With thanks to our sponsors
Most Innovative Processing or Packaging Machine Winner: OAL Group (Olympus Automation)
Most Innovative Ancillary Equipment Winner: Elesa (UK)
Due to the high number of entries for this award, the judges focused on innovations in machines or processes, rather than design improvements or developments, and awarded the prize to OAL Group for its ‘revolutionary’ Steam Infusion System. With the potential to revolutionise the food processing industry through low pressure cooking and almost instantaneous heating, the system is already demonstrating significant savings.
Highly commended:
The judges were impressed with Elesa’s panel support clamp, stating that ‘whilst it appears to be quite a modest item compared with some other submissions, it solves a lot of problems with the fitting – and especially the repair and retro-fit – of safety guards’. They also liked the fact that the clamp is applicable to guarding situations in all industries.
Highly commended: Venair
Commended:
Endoline Machinery, Marel, PFM Packaging Machinery
Renmar, Sumitomo SHI Demag
Commended:
Pacepacker Services
Processing & Packaging Machinery Manufacturer of the Year Winner: Loma Systems
Loma’s attention to excellence was praised by the panel, who dubbed the company ‘a great example of how the drive for excellence in the individual elements of any operation leads to a sound and successful business’. Improvements in supplier performance, reductions in manufacturing time, and focus on key performance indicators have all led to increased sales, improved profitability, excellent customer service and high employee retention.
Most Innovative Machine Vision Project Winner: Olmec UK
The judges awarded the prize to Olmec UK for its ‘successful execution of a complex and complicated application, using a mix of camera, lighting and software’. The panel also praised the company for demonstrating the ‘long-term value of an investment in a machine vision solution’.
Polymer Manufacturer or Distributor of the Year Winner: Sumitomo SHI Demag
Sumitomo SHI Demag’s ‘great approach to customer service’ proved a winner with the judges, who also praised the company’s ‘ability to juggle multiple suppliers to find a winning solution’.
Partnership of the Year Winner: Stemmer Imaging/ Siga Vision
A partnership in the truest sense of the word, the panel particularly liked the fact that Stemmer, through its size, has enabled Siga to develop projects that Siga could not self-fund. In turn, Siga has ‘provided feedback and challenges that have allowed Stemmer to continuously improve its products, giving great results for all of its customers’.
Highly commended:
Olmec UK/Rofin Baasel/Universal Converting Equipment

PPMA Show 2014 Awards Winners
Sustainability Award Winner: Aetna Group UK
The combination of investment in a brand new testing facility in Italy and its latest stretch wrapping technology means Aetna is achieving the optimum stable transit pack while using thinner, cheaper and even damaged materials for its customers in the drinks trade. The judges also praised the fact that ‘it enables customers to use correct wrapping, not just more wrapping, to deliver undamaged goods – a no waste option’.
Highly commended:
Customer Service Winner: Yorkshire Packaging Systems
This family business has seen 40% of its sales in each of the last ten years come from existing customers and it puts this success down to its best in class back-up and support, in which it invests heavily. ‘From inclusive service contracts, to spare part stocking, to pre-delivery operator training, the company offers a plethora of services that keep customers coming back’, praised the panel.
Highly commended:
Pacepacker Services, PFM Packaging Machinery
Langen Group, OAL Group
Most Innovative Automation System Winner: Endoline Machinery
While acknowledging that box sealing is not the ‘glamour department’ in automation, the judges felt that ‘some factors in this system development beat the robots for once’, praising a bold system overhaul that used a step change in actuators and control to deliver a 50% speed increase and high flexibility. The impact was also judged to be high, with 12+ systems to be delivered and strong potential for more.
Exceptional Company or Sales Growth Winner: Fortress Technology
The fact that Fortress far exceeded its budgeted and forecast sales increase in 2013 is an ‘exceptional achievement’, stated the panel, adding: ‘The fact that this is being done from a UK manufacturing base is also very heartening’.
Highly commended: Adsol
Highly commended:

Tekpak, Pacepacker Services
Exporter of the Year Winner: Industrial Washing Machines
Despite starting to seriously export at a very difficult point in the global downturn, Industrial Washing Machines has succeeded through focusing strategically on key markets and responding to the needs of overseas customers. The company has ‘shown what can be achieved in a short time by researching the market, adapting to local conditions and building the right strategic key market approach’, praised the judges.
Highly commended:

Visitors flock to ProPak Asia 2014 Despite the political unrest at the time of the show, ProPak Asia 2014 Deighton Manufacturing’s stand at (11-14 June, Bangkok) ProPak Asia 2014 was well attended, attracting 36,310 visitors from 62 countries, the majority from surrounding ASEAN nations. This year, the advert for the PPMA UK Pavilion took centre stage in the middle of the entrance lobby – also the venue for the official opening proceedings – resulting in some great exposure for exhibiting companies AMP Rose, Deighton Manufacturing, Durham Duplex, Jacob White and Winkworth. Our Chief Operating Officer Andrew Stark oversaw the UK Pavilion and also manned the PPMA stand, which offered a service for UK companies seeking to identify agent and distributor networks, an equipment finder service, and distribution of Machinery Update. Andrew also took the opportunity to meet with local representatives from the British Embassy in Bangkok and the British Chamber of Commerce in Thailand.
ProPak China marks 20 years of success with record-breaking event To celebrate the 20th anniversary of ProPak China (16-18 July 2014, Shanghai), the event was officially launched with a full dragon dance, and increased in size to record its largest edition to date. A total of 670 companies exhibited, representing 24 countries across eight national pavilions. The European hall was full to capacity – as a result, more space will be required for 2015. Although the PPMA UK Pavilion was smaller than in previous years with just two exhibitors (Cap Coder and Russell Finex, plus PPMA), a number of members exhibited ‘off block’, making the most of the increase in visitors (18,120). Pavilion exhibitors were positive about the quality of visitors and the pavilion’s location, and both companies confirmed that they intend to exhibit again next year.

Beyond PUWER It would seem reasonable to assume that if PUWER inspections are conducted at appropriate intervals, employers have done all that is needed to ensure that their production machinery is safe. Unfortunately, if that machinery incorporates electro-sensitive protective equipment (ESPE), which is increasingly taking the place of traditional guarding, this may not be the case. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published guidance note HSG180, ‘Application of electro-sensitive equipment using light curtains and light beam devices to machinery’. It states that: “inspection and testing is required where the safe operation [of the ESPE] is critically dependent on its condition in use and deterioration would lead to a significant risk to the operator or other worker. If this is the case, then installations using ESPE should be inspected at suitable intervals.” The recommended maximum period between each periodic inspection and test is six months for type 4
For technical advice contact PPMA’s technical partner TÜV SÜD Product Service E paul.laidler@tuv-sud.co.uk T +44 (0)8700 111375 www.tuv-sud.co.uk ESPE and twelve months for type 2 ESPE, but this will depend on the equipment to which it is fitted and the risk as a whole. PUWER assessments are generally completed annually, but for ESPE a six-month interval will apply in many cases. This means that the inspection of ESPE will need to be treated as a separate task, and not simply as part of the routine PUWER assessments. HSG180 also raises the issue of the competence of the person performing the inspection, as there are many factors that have to be skilfully evaluated. These include inspecting the positioning of the equipment to make sure that it is the correct distance from the danger zone; ensuring that suitable safeguards are in place to prevent access to the danger zone from directions not covered by the ESPE; testing the overall response time; testing the detection capability; inspecting the stopping performance monitor if one is fitted; and testing the primary machine control elements to ensure correct functionality. Also, once the ESPE inspection has been completed, it must be documented. The use of ESPE on machines offers many benefits and, if correctly applied, can provide levels of safety at least as good as those offered by more conventional guarding and protection techniques. However, for ESPE to reliably fulfil its purpose it must be regularly inspected and tested; simply relying on routine PUWER inspections is not enough – it would be wise to start making your ESPE inspection plans now.

Industry News Mechanical engineering firms continue investing at a good rate For the seventh time in the last eight months, over two-fifths of mechanical engineering companies said they were investing across all their activities, according to the Engineering and Machinery Alliance’s (EAMA) July Business Monitor. Martin Walder, EAMA Chairman, comments: “Firms in supply chains such as food, pharmaceuticals, rail, oil and gas are investing broadly to meet increased demand. At the same time, access to finance seems to be easing. With more companies reporting improvements than difficulties for the second month in a row, some firms are definitely finding an improved environment with a possible trend emerging.” www.eama.info

Positive news for SMEs looking to borrow funds The SME Finance Monitor looks at the borrowing process from the perspective of SMEs. The findings contained in its Q2 2014 report revealed that: • 76% of SMEs interviewed reported a profit, up from 69% in Q2 2013; • Fewer SMEs see access to finance as a major obstacle to their business – 8% rated it an obstacle in Q2 2014, compared to 12% in Q1 2013; • 66% of all loan and overdraft applications made in the last 18 months were successful. In addition, almost all those renewing an existing loan or overdraft facility were successful (96%) compared to half of those seeking new funds (46%); • However, there is no sign of increased appetite for (new) external finance, and most SMEs (78%) met the definition of a ‘happy non-seeker’ of funds for the 12 months prior to Q2 2014. Commenting on the results, a spokesman from the British Bankers’ Association (BBA) said: “It’s encouraging that more smaller businesses are making a profit, building up cash and planning to grow. Only 8% now consider access to finance an obstacle to their future plans. High street banks approve nearly 7 out of 10 applications for lending and with an appeals process in place for those who are declined finance, we’d encourage small businesses thinking about borrowing to approach their bank to discuss the range of financing options available.”
The ISPE UK Affiliate has released the draft programme for its Annual Conference (13 November 2014, Hilton Brighton Metropole, Brighton), which will tackle the idea that ‘Risk based thinking, linked to the effective use of science and technology, improves the breed!’. The programme includes a parallel session on Good Automated Manufacturing Practice, a regulatory session and several case studies. The conference is oomplemented by a table top exhibition and the Annual Awards Dinner, and is the perfect networking opportunity for anyone working in pharmaceutical engineering.

Industry News
Putting our BEST foot forward By Andrew Stark, PPMA Group Chief Operating Officer Despite a recent dip in output, the UK’s manufacturing sector is growing robustly, increasing by an anticipated 3.3% in 2014. But if this trend is to continue, then we must ensure we have a strong and steady stream of skilled workers coming into the industry. One of the main threats to the future success of the UK’s manufacturing sector is the current engineering skills shortage. As many of our members can testify, recruiting trained staff can be a challenge, with hands-on engineering roles, such as service engineers, particularly hard to fill. And with many engineers now nearing retirement age, turning the next generation on to the benefits of a career in the manufacturing sector is crucial. The perception among some young people of manufacturing as an insecure, poorly paid career choice, coupled with a lack of career advice and an emphasis on academic achievement over practical, hands-on experience has been partially to blame for the current recruitment shortfall. Our continued belief as a nation for much of the last few decades on the UK economy being able to prosper based largely on the service and financial sectors has also meant that we have not placed much focus on the importance of our manufacturing industry. However, with the cost of going to university increasing year on year and the graduate job market looking ever more precarious, an engineering or manufacturing apprenticeship may provide an attractive alternative to university, particularly for the more
practical-minded student. Ensuring that the right courses are available – and that young people are engaged into taking them – is therefore a key issue for the PPMA Group. While there has been lots of talk around improving the situation over the medium to long-term, our members are facing recruitment challenges now. We have therefore established a new charitable trust, PPMA BEST (Business, Education, Skills and Training), aimed at helping to nurture and facilitate solutions to the current manufacturing skills gap here and now. The programme will be formally launched early in 2015, but initiatives will include: • Helping institutions to tailor courses towards the skills most valued by prospective employers; • Helping provide a direct channel to employers able to offer apprenticeships; • Encouraging competition, driving up standards and promoting engineering; • Arranging work placements and school visits to PPMA member facilities. By supporting education and raising the profile of manufacturing among young people, PPMA BEST will benefit students, our members and UK plc. Our aim is to to build a pipeline – providing secure employment prospects for the younger generation, while at the same time ensuring an ongoing supply of quality engineering staff for the future. A win-win for everyone.

Top tips for effective appraisals When holding an appraisal, the following simple behavioural tips for managers will help to ensure the meeting is positive and effective: • Establish trust – It is essential that the employee has faith in you, believing that you are there to support their best interests, achievement, development, and progression. • Consider your personal manner – Ensure your body language, voice, and approach are relaxed and non-threatening, to put the employee at ease. Equally, be sensitive to the employee’s body language and behaviour cues. • Listen actively – Ask open and probing questions to encourage the employee to talk freely and honestly about their thoughts and attitudes. Don’t interrupt, but broaden on points to demonstrate understanding and interest. • Don’t rush – Ensure that you have adequate time, free of interruption and distraction, so the employee is reassured that you are focused on their individual needs. • Involve the employee actively – Reflect and analyse performance jointly and collaboratively. Don’t dominate or control the meeting; the employee should do most of the talking. • Celebrate achievement – Reinforce good performance with praise and recognition. The employee should know that you value and appreciate their efforts. • Deliver all feedback positively – Address issues of underperformance honestly but sensitively, supportively and constructively. Focus discussions on understanding what went wrong and how to put it right, rather than judging punitively. • Maintain integrity – Don’t make promises you can’t keep – failing to deliver will undermine trust and motivation. • Provide challenge, encouragement and inspiring vision – Even long-serving staff can become better at what they do, but employees can become complacent, uninspired, and disengaged without a passionate, enthusiastic manager. • Consider career-planning needs – Discussing the aspirations and developmental needs of the individual is vital to engagement and motivation.
