Lord Digby Jones set to open the show
Who visits?
The PPMA Show is attended by thousands of end-users and buyers from a wide range of sectors each year. Take a look at our typical visitor profile.
We are delighted to announce that Lord Digby Jones will officially open the PPMA Show 2015 at 10am on 29 September. Former Director General of the CBI and Minister of State for Trade and Investment, Lord Jones is a passionate advocate of British business. “Lord Jones has always been a stalwart supporter of British industry and with the continued upward trend in UK manufacturing, we thought it befitting for him to deliver the keynote address and visit stand holders across the 2015 exhibition,” says Grant Jaimeson, PPMA Chairman.
Make yours a ‘destination’ stand
What our visitors say “In a digital age some people would say that trade shows are less relevant but I like to talk to people and physically see machines in action, which is what the PPMA Show provides.”
Make sure that your stand is one that every visitor wants to see by raising awareness of your activities well in advance of the show. Press, end-users and buyers alike will be looking to maximise their time at the show by creating a ‘hit list’ of those stands that are already creating a buzz before the doors have even opened. To ensure that your company’s stand is at the top of our visitors’ wish list, send details of any planned product launches, innovations, company announcements, demonstrations and stand activities to: ppma@stormcom.co.uk

“It’s important for Tesco to attend exhibitions such as the PPMA Show as we want to be able to access technologies that excite consumers. It also provides us with wider access to manufacturers and a route to contact with them.” Paul Earnshaw, Packaging Manager, Tesco plc
Nestlé, PepsiCo and Jaguar Land Rover confirmed for seminar programme
“Good for learning about new machinery and discovering new business opportunities – you don’t realise how advanced some of the systems are that are on offer.” Will Anderson, BST Detectable Products
Following the success of last year’s PPMA Show seminar programme, we are pleased to confirm that this year’s sessions will include presentations from Nestlé, PepsiCo, Jaguar Land Rover, Be4Ward, the Food and Drink Federation and the CE Marking Association. “Jaguar Land Rover’s speaker will demonstrate how industrial vision systems integrate to form the perfect partnership with robot applications in the assembly of quality vehicles,” outlines
Grant Collier, PPMA Group Head of Marketing and Publishing. “Also confirmed is Peter Evans, Compliance Engineer for the CE Marking Association, who will discuss the CE marking of machines and how manufacturers can manage the changes planned for 2016.” The seminar programme will also feature sessions on many of the key issues affecting the industry, such as the national skills shortage, late payments from large customers to suppliers, the latest on the changing relationships between multiple retailers and suppliers, and apprenticeships and the opportunities they create. “Food Processing magazine will chair a seminar on the success of apprentice engineers in food and drink processing,” adds Grant. “Featuring first-hand experiences from an apprentice at PepsiCo and a graduate engineer from Nestlé, this is one session not to be missed. Watch this space as more leading names are announced.”

Gulfood Manufacturing – UK pavilion expected to sell out Introduced for the first time last year, Gulfood Manufacturing (9-11 November 2014) proved a resounding success, attracting 1,100 exhibitors and over 26,000 visitors from 156 different countries. Boasting 53,000m2 of floor space, the event hosted 26 official international pavilions. And at 920m2, the PPMA UK pavilion was particularly busy, holding a total of 38 companies. “The general feedback was superb, right from the opening; we saw a record number of leads and enquiries, machinery selling straight off the stands, and customers coming back to negotiate payment,” said David Harrison, PPMA Group Exhibition Manager. The new show for the ingredients, processing, packaging, equipment and logistics sectors, Gulfood Manufacturing 2015 takes place at the Dubai World Trade Centre on 27-29 October – the original Gulfood, which takes place each February, remains the show for retail, hospitality, trade and food service industries. Plans for the Gulfood Manufacturing 2015 UK pavilion are well underway and members are urged to return their booking form and deposit as soon as possible to be sure of a place, as space is expected to sell out. PPMA China Office – Notice of Closure Following an extensive review, the PPMA Board has reached the decision that it is no longer economically viable to maintain the PPMA’s China Representative Office. The PPMA Group has therefore announced the closure of our China Office in Shanghai, effective from 30 April 2015. The China Office has successfully helped a significant number of UK member companies to get a foothold in Chinese markets, grow their businesses and set up their own independent offices in China. The PPMA Board would like to recognise the valuable contribution the team in our China Office has made over the last 16 years; this closure reflects a successful conclusion to those companies it has assisted. It also reflects the current absence of appetite from further members pursuing China and using our regional office. The closure will allow our resources to be redirected into new areas, most notably our PPMA Show and PPMA BEST. Craig Chen, our ex-General Manager in China, will continue to help UK companies interested in visiting or exploring the Chinese market as an independent consultant. He can be contacted via the PPMA.
Export survey results set to enhance member services Thank you to all who took part in our recent survey to find out more about our members’ export and overseas shows activities. We will use this information to develop future products and services to support our members further.

Wireless modules equal new compliance requirements By Neil Dyson, Business Line Manager for Machinery Safety at TÜV SÜD Product Service, a global product testing and certification organisation
For technical advice contact PPMA’s technical partner TÜV SÜD Product Service T +44 (0)8700 111375 www.tuv-sud.co.uk
In order to reduce both costs and time to market, many machinery manufacturers are relying on the use of wireless modules which already meet some or all of the Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Directive 1999/5/EC (R&TTE) essential requirements*. However, once these modules are integrated into another product, this changes the regulatory requirements. Integrating a wireless module is not always as straightforward as it may seem. The most common method of demonstrating compliance with the R&TTE essential requirements is by using ‘Harmonised Standards’. As these constantly evolve, they effectively have an expiry date and become superseded by more up-to-date standards, which may well have different requirements. Manufacturers may therefore need to perform a gap analysis between the two sets of standards in order to bring their products up to speed with the latest requirements.
Global rules
For European compliance, ensure that the wireless module you are integrating is fully compliant with the latest Harmonised Standards and is integrated in accordance with the manufacturer’s supplied instructions. While the module manufacturer should be aware of the integration rules, as a minimum the final/host product manufacturer should check the module’s Declaration of Conformity
Once wireless modules are integrated into a new product, the regularity requirements change
to ensure that it lists Harmonised Standards that are in date. For the final product manufacturer, it is also important to have access to the module manufacturer’s technical file in case a country’s market surveillance authority asks for proof of compliance. The USA and Canada have formal approval processes in place, so the routes to compliance are reasonably clear compared to Europe. However, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules can be difficult to understand. When all FCC requirements are met and the device is certified, the FCC grant will state that the device has modular approval. The manufacturer should then display a label on the product which states that it contains an approved wireless module. The Industry Canada rules for modules are broadly similar to those of the FCC and are laid down in RSS-GEN Section 3. For USA and Canada, host product manufacturers should check the conditions of the module grant and ensure that the product is not breaking those conditions. Once again, follow the module manufacturer’s guidance on integration and do not assume that because the wireless module itself is compliant, no further action is required once it is integrated into another product. In any country, the market surveillance authorities can come down hard on manufacturers that supply non-compliant products to the market and ignorance of the rules is no excuse. *The R&TTE will be superseded by the Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EC) in June 2016.

Beyond Contracting for Availability – case studies required
Late payments still cause for concern Late payment in the supply chain remains a serious issue, especially for small and medium businesses. Diageo is the latest big name to put pressure on its suppliers, increasing its payment terms for new contracts from 60 to 90 days. With the UK’s small businesses waiting for an average of £38,200 in overdue payments, the damaging knock-on effect hinders their ability to manage their finances and plan for growth, and pushes late payment down the supply chain, potentially affecting many more firms. To challenge this practice, the Small Business, Enterprise and Employment Bill currently before Parliament is making changes to improve prompt payment reporting, and discussions are underway to strengthen the Prompt Payment Code. The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has sought views on how these changes could be best implemented and how to, if at all, better define ‘grossly unfair’ in relation to late payments in UK law. Subject to the views expressed, the Government may subsequently decide to make consequential changes to the UK’s statutory framework. We will report on the Department’s findings as soon as they are made available. italics after final sentence, but before weblink: Lord Digby Jones will address the issue of late payments in his opening speech at the PPMA Show 2015. See p3 for more details. http://bit.ly/1MPId5W
The last decade saw a big shift in business focus of many Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) of high value products, from solely selling their assets to offering integrated assets and services. Also known as Product Service Systems (PSS), this business model actually dates back to the early days of leasing, in which customers pay for the rights to use someone else’s physical equipment. The fee may vary from a flat-rate fee to a more sophisticated fee structure based on the achievement of the outcomes that the equipment brings. A typical example of outcome-based contracting is Contracting for Availability (CfA). However, machines not only need to be available but also capable of performing jobs at the intended cycle time (or speed), with minimum scrap. This has led to a new type of contracting, called Contracting for OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness). A proposed research project by Dr Benny Tjahjono of the Supply Chain Research Centre, Cranfield University, aims to explore this new model further, with the ultimate goal of helping manufacturers remain competitive. Dr Tjahjono is therefore inviting machine manufacturers to participate in the research, by completing an interview and case study. In return, participants will have access to the report in the form of a white paper (with company names anonymous if required). Depending on the scale and the number of companies involved, participants may also be invited to attend a workshop at Cranfield to disseminate the results. To find out more or to get involved in the project, contact b.tjahjono@cranfield.ac.uk
February results show companies remain cautious According to the main measures in the Engineering and Machinery Alliance’s (EAMA) February Business Monitor, business improved markedly during the month, showing that the recovery is strengthening. Nonetheless, the overall performance is still well behind last year and companies’ outlook, while positive, remains cautious. Martin Walder, EAMA Chairman, comments: “Although mechanical engineering is doing well generally, roughly between a fifth and a

quarter of firms are still reporting enquiries and orders down on last month, whereas we would expect to see such fallers making up less than a fifth on a sustained basis if the recovery were lifting all companies.” “These returns pre-date the March Budget,”adds Martin. “Our sense is that while the Budget will have helped – for example, with packages to encourage North Sea investment and exports to China – it is unlikely to have changed the current mood.” www.eama.info

While UK robot sales were down 22% compared with 2013, export sales were up by an impressive 40%. Robots sold for glueing and sealing applications were up by 13%, and those sold for assembly increased by an incredible 104% year on year. However, figures were down for all other applications. There was also considerable variation in the industry sectors buying robots in 2014. Sales to plastics companies increased by 75%, and electrical/electronic was up by 73%. The education / R&D sector also saw an uptake in the number of robots bought, with figures up by 37% compared to 2013. However, all other sectors saw a dip, most notably automotive and auto components, which were down 27% and 48% respectively. This was widely expected as 2012-13 saw unusually high levels of investment in automation by the automotive and auto components sectors. The Q1 2015 figures are due to be released imminently – for the latest stats go to www.bara.org.uk

Changes at the top By Ian Alderton, UKIVA Chairman and Sales Director of Alrad Imaging In the last issue, we urged the membership to become more involved in the activities of the Association and I am delighted to report that we have had a great response to this request. At a recent members’ meeting, we restructured the UKIVA committee, with Acrovision, Bytronic Automation, Clearview Imaging and Scandinavian Machine Vision joining current committee members Alrad Imaging, Framos, Multipix Imaging, Scorpion Vision and Stemmer Imaging. Significantly, we are already seeing a useful contribution from our vision systems integrators, which can only be a positive sign for further cross-fertilisation with the rest of the PPMA membership. Another change saw Mark Williamson stand down as UKIVA Chairman after 13 years in the role, a period which has included overseeing the integration of UKIVA as a special interest group of the PPMA. Mark will continue as a PPMA board member, which will again ensure the strong involvement of vision in the PPMA’s activities. I was delighted to be elected as UKIVA Chairman, with Paul Wilson from Scorpion Vision becoming UKIVA Vice Chairman. Alrad Imaging has been a member of UKIVA for some 20 years and it is the second time a member of the company has been appointed chairman, Geoff Smith holding the office from 1997–1999.

Now with more than 60 members, the MTC was established in 2010 to bridge the gap between academia and industry. It provides a unique environment to develop and demonstrate new technologies at scale, and allows its clients to develop processes in a neutral setting without the constraints of a commercial production environment. The Centre delivers solutions across UK manufacturing, with clients representing the aerospace, automotive, transport, healthcare, ICT, robotics, food production, defence and marine sectors. Mark Williamson, Director – Corporate Market Development, at Stemmer Imaging, says: “The MTC specialises in processes that are particularly valuable to the high-value manufacturing sector. Our membership means we are now in a position to supply even more vision-related hardware and software, and contribute our specialist vision expertise to any project that requires it.” www.stemmer-imaging.co.uk
Cognex revs up 2-D barcode reading Cognex has unveiled its PowerGrid™ technology, a texture-based location algorithm that takes an inside-out approach to reading 2-D matrix and Direct Part Mark (DPM) codes, looking for patterns of alternating light and dark modules within the code. Increasing read rates in 2-D barcode-reading applications where geometry, poor lighting, occlusion, or print-registration errors make capturing a complete image difficult, PowerGrid™ locates and reads codes even when they exhibit significant damage to, or complete elimination of, the finder pattern, clocking pattern, or quiet zone. Carl Gerst, Senior Vice President, ID Products, comments: “After analysing images of codes that we couldn’t read, we determined that a high percentage showed significant finder pattern, clocking pattern, or quiet zone damage. This is a completely new and innovative technique that can find and read these codes without relying on the finder pattern. The result is nothing short of incredible.” www.cognex.com
Olmec vision system reduces chance of product recall A leading manufacturer of OTC healthcare products has commissioned a five-camera inspection system on a cartoning machine with two separate leaflet feeders, to ensure that cartons not only contain a patient information leaflet but that it is the correct one. The vision system, designed and installed by Olmec UK, also provides the option to ensure that the correct bottle has been inserted into the carton. Linked into the existing reject mechanism, this substantially reduces the chances of costly product recalls due to packaging errors. The vision system was installed on a cartoning machine that cycles up to 70 times per minute and is used for two different product lines. Individual area scan cameras read the carton pharma code and check that the leaflet is in the carton, as well as reading the leaflet pharma codes on two separate leaflet feeders. www.olmec-uk.com

PPMA BEST
Inspiring the next generation of engineers By Andrew Stark, PPMA Group Chief Operating Officer The main aim of the PPMA is to improve our members’ bottom line. Most of our activities are geared towards doing this in the short and medium term – after all, our members want to feel the benefit of the cash they spend with us. A notable exception, however, is members’ support for the concept that some of the money raised by the PPMA should be used to help attract future generations into the industry. As many PPMA Group members will testify, it has become increasingly difficult to recruit skilled staff in recent years, particularly those with various technical and engineering backgrounds. With many of our members being owner-managed SMEs, there is a growing interest among PPMA members in succession planning and the need to attract new talent. The PPMA Board has therefore set up an educational charitable trust, PPMA BEST, with some initial funding from the PPMA Show, with the aim of encouraging young people to enter into and develop within the processing, packaging, automation and vision engineering industries, through education and training. The initial trustees of PPMA BEST are Ian Jardine (PPMA Company Secretary), Richard Little (PPMA Director) and John Chudley (Dean, Maritime and Technology

Faculty, Southampton Solent University), and they have proposed a series of initiatives that would engage learners at all stages. The trustees acknowledge the benefits of working with established providers of science and engineering engagement programmes, including The Smallpeice Trust, Arkwright Scholarships Trust and Big Bang. It is initially proposed that there will be four key support programmes aimed at different age groups and different stages of education: •S TEM days for schools, following the Smallpeice/Big Bang programmes. Companies wishing to participate would apply to support a local school (NB only companies, not schools, can apply) and pay £500, match-funded by PPMA BEST. It is hoped that this would encourage companies to establish a longer-term relationship with a local school, who in turn would benefit from the first-hand experience of an owner or employee of a successful local engineering firm. •A rkwright Scholarships (6th Form A Level students), which identify, inspire and nurture future leaders in engineering and technical design. PPMA BEST would match-fund 50/50 with participating companies. www.ppma.co.uk
• Apprenticeship awards. These would comprise a grant to the company taking on the apprentice to help with set-up and advice, and a grant to the apprentice. Apprentices must be paid at least the UK minimum wage for those over 21 (currently £6.50 per hour) and would not be match-funded, as the employment of the apprentice would count as the company contribution. • Graduate support awards. To be claimed in equal parts over the term of the graduate course, paid 50/50 between PPMA BEST and the sponsoring company, who would offer the graduate employment for a number of weeks each summer. Students must be paid at least the UK minimum wage for those over 21. All participating companies must be active in the design, manufacture or supply of processing, packaging, automation or vision machinery, equipment or ancillary equipment. Awards will be advertised to PPMA members and non-members and will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. I look forward to sharing more information on our plans for PPMA BEST as we roll out these programmes over the coming months, and to realising our shared aim of inspiring, attracting and helping to train the next generation of engineers.

Beryl began a long and courageous fight against cancer in 2006, which caused her to retire from the PPMA. However, such was her energy that she began a whole new life, moving to Goa where she remained until shortly before her death. She built a new career and found many new friends there, and was held in esteem and great affection.
