Introduction Welcome to the ADBA National Conference 2018 Supporting the UK anaerobic digestion (AD) industry in a rapidly changing world is the theme of today’s conference, and goodness knows we’re living in a time of huge uncertainty. The future of the UK’s relationship with the European Union remains stubbornly unresolved, making it difficult for businesses and government to have the confidence to invest in crucial industries such as our own. But the impact of Brexit pales in comparison with the increasingly urgent warnings we are receiving about the need to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions to avoid leaving us, our children and grandchildren with a world ravaged by catastrophic climate change. It is ironic that we are hamstrung by uncertainty at the very time when urgent action is needed to support industries that can make an immediate and significant contribution to decarbonising our economy. By treating wastes and producing renewable energy and natural fertiliser, AD is precisely one such industry that is technology-ready and willing to make such a contribution, as well as being a fantastic export opportunity for the UK. The existing policy landscape is, however, currently providing scant support for the many benefits that AD offers across a range of sectors. The number of new biomethane plants is expected to decrease as we head into the 2020s without long-term support from government, whilst incentives for renewable electricity generation have now all but disappeared. But there remains a wealth of opportunities to be seized. The replacement of the Common Agricultural Policy offers government the chance to recognise the vital role that AD can play in reducing emissions from farming, while the maintenance of the fuel duty differential will continue to make alternative fuels such as biomethane an increasingly viable option for bus and HGV fleet managers. At time of writing, we are still awaiting the publication of the government’s Resources & Waste Strategy, in which we are hoping for a long-overdue commitment to universal food waste collections to allow England to catch up with the rest of the UK in recycling its inedible food waste through AD. And then of course there is the contribution that biomethane can make to decarbonising the UK’s gas grid, a challenge that to date is yet to be meaningfully tackled by ministers but which offers a huge opportunity for the AD industry. It is, of course, also incumbent upon us as an industry to ensure that we are constantly looking to innovate to improve operational standards at AD plants in order to keep costs low and ensure we have support from stakeholders for the important work we do.

Sustainable Bankside, Sumner Street, London, SE1 9HZ, United Kingdom Tel: 0203 176 0503 adbioresources.org

Today’s conference is the perfect opportunity to discuss all of the above and establish a way forward for ensuring that AD has a central role whatever the surrounding political, economic, and environmental conditions. While the world may change around us, the need for a strong and vibrant UK AD industry is one thing we can be sure of.

Exhibitor Profiles 3M Gas & Flame Detection Stand 8

Biogastechnik Stand 6

3M Gas & Flame Detection is comprised of former IST companies, Detcon, Oldham, Gas Measurement Instruments (GMI) and Simtronics, along with the gas and flame business of Scott Safety. The five legacy companies have come together to form one unified company with a unified vision for providing end-to-end solutions and the most comprehensive portfolio of gas and flame detection products in the many industries it serves.

Air Liquide Stand 11 World leader in gases, technologies and services for Industry and Health, Air Liquide is present in 80 countries with approximately 65,000 employees and serves more than 3.5 million customers and patients. Air Liquide is a committed stakeholder to new energies. It has developed technologies and expertise that span the entire biomethane value chain. The Group has designed its own membranes’ technology for upgrading biogas and enhances the value created by Anaerobic Digestion plants. These solutions enable the upgrading of all biogases for subsequent injection into the natural gas grid, the production of vehicle fuel (compressed or liquefied natural gas or biogas) and the production of renewable hydrogen from liquid biomethane.

Biogastechnik-Sud GmbH Manufacturers of high quality, efficient and versatile components for on farm AD plants. Vapogant digestate evaporator: Our system processes digestate from a biogas plant to produce a usable, concentrated by-product (fertiliser) and reduces water content of the liquid fraction, thereby reducing the volume of the residual digestate. The system utilises available waste heat to thicken and reduce the total volume of the digestates produced in the biogas plant. Water is removed from the digestate through vacuum evaporation utilising waste heat from the CHP’s. At the same time, volatile nitrogen is bound so that any emissions during storage and spreading will be minimised, making the nitrogen available as ammonium sulphate solution (ASS). Up to 70% of water content can be reduced through a very high evaporation rate of 2.5 litres per kilowatt of thermal output. Typically a 500 kW plant provides enough heat to reduce the liquid volume by about 10,000 m³ per year. The plant is scalable to suit and is available in a module sizes of 400 kW or 500 kW. Please visit our website for more information on this and our full range of products for feeding, mixing and process components. Cadent Gas Stand 15

Not only a technology provider, Air Liquide makes partnerships with biogas producers and shares its experience. The Group already has two biomethane plants in operation in the United Kingdom and has a further four in construction. It operates nearly 50 biogas sites worldwide. The biomethane that is upgraded by Air Liquide can be notably used as fuel. Up to date, Air Liquide operates nearly 60 bio-NGV (Natural Gas for Vehicle) fueling stations in Europe, including three in the United Kingdom. They can refuel vehicles with compressed natural gas (CNG) or/and liquefied natural gas (LNG) on the same site, produced in part from biomethane. Some can also provide liquid nitrogen for cryogenic refrigerated transport.

Cadent is the largest distributor of gas in the UK, transporting safe, sustainable gas supplies to almost 11 million homes and businesses, working hard to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emissions. Collaborating with our customers, stakeholders and the Gas Distribution Networks we are supporting and enabling the growth of biomethane gas to decarbonise heat and transport and meet UK carbon emission targets. Hidrostal Ltd Stand 16

Greenlane Biogas is a global solution provider with regional offices in key markets and a service support structure to support our global installations 24/7; the logical choice and your perfect partner in helping you to deliver a green and profitable solution to waste.

Hidrostal Ltd are manufacturers of sludge tank mixing and re-circulation pumps to the Anaerobic Digestion & Biogas industry. The geometry of the Hidrostal screw centrifugal impeller with its large free ball passage is ideally suited for pumping sludges and liquors with unpredictable content. The steep and stable pump curves ensure minimum flow variations when fluctuations occur in delivery head. Hidrostal pumps are manufactured with chrome steel impellers and hidrohard liners. These materials are ideally suited to the environment as they are both corrosion and abrasion resistant. Both the mixers and the recirculation pumps use regulable liners making efficiency and performance restoration on site a possibility. The efficiency is further improved due to the utilisation of I3 and IE4 TEFC motor technologies. Hidrostal’s end suction bearing frame pumps are externally mounted thus easily accessible and maintainable, ensuring servicing is trouble free. The mixer system is also available as an offsite manufactured module. Hidrostal pumps have longevity at their core. They have been proven to last twice as long as comparable pumps in a similar application.
