INTERVIEW ALEXANDER KHOKHLOV
INTRODUCING HIS PROJECT:
WEIRD BEAUTY The “Weird Beauty project is made in collaboration with great make-up artist Valeriya Kutsan. In these series we decided to deny any color in our series except black and white to make more accent on forms and volume. The experiment should prove that usual simple forms, familiar things or characters can be a main part of wonderful beauty looks. Model faces in this project are not just canvases for the face-arts - they play their own role in each photo with different parts.
HOW DID YOU START WITH PHOTOGRAPHY? “I took up photography in 2007. I am a musician (playing drums in a rock band), So the first thing I’ve interested was reporting and live photography. I became interested in fashion and beauty photography in the end of 2008. I began to attend master classes, coming up with own ideas and organizing my first shootings. At this time I prefer to shoot portraits and try to experiment as much as possible in this genre of photography.”
WHAT INSPIRES YOU? “To tell you the truth I have no idea where I’ll find the next photo. It can be the film, the book, pictures and paintings, rainy day, smile of a close friend. I walk a lot, it helps to make an accent on your thoughts, speak with your mind, have new impressions from the old places. And I have the muse of course! She is the main part of my inspiration and creativity.”
GOING INTO “WEIRD BEAUTY” PROJECT.
WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR IDEA FROM? The main idea of this project and its name (Weird Beauty) were created when 3 works were already done. Me and Valeriya Kutsan, the make-up artist, just wanted to make different monochromatic face-arts for the new year calendar. But each new photo showed us that it was more than good paintings. I saw the double bottom in the images and was impressed by the way that simple forms and real human faces can collaborate to each other. It was simultaneously simple, stylish, illusionary effective and... weird! So I decided to name the
project “Weird Beauty” (I used first letters from “white” and “black” to create the name). For the “Weird Beauty” project me and Valeriya selected more than 30 ideas. We wanted to deny the banal characters such as yin-yang or a chess board, so the possible combinations of black and white were different and mostly unexpected. Some ideas were invented in the course of the project - we have always find something new. Several ideas have been taken as a basis, and then transformed into the other - the process has been very exciting!
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SYMBOLS LIKE MICKEY OR CHANEL? These symbols are just variations of black and white, don’t you agree? The idea to use Mickey face was mine ‘cause it means that everybody has a part of child inside. And Chanel idea was Valeria’s - it’s her favourite fashion brand .-
