Case Studies

State-Of-The-Art play area in Ingleton attracts more tourists Ingleton Parish Council are celebrating their brand new state-of-the-art play area. The £130,000 play area has been made possible by the efforts of Ingleton Parish Council, it is “fantastic” quoted a local parent and “the children love it”. Ingleton Parish Regeneration Association have been dedicated to fundraising for the project since the 2001 foot and mouth outbreak, with the aim of attracting tourists back to the area. Playdale originally provided the old play area in 1988, and were delighted to provide the new area, which is now “one of the best facilities of its kind in the region” stated Phil Walker – Ingleton Parish Councillor.

A new play area…Bringing the community together Playdale Playgrounds were delighted to be awarded the winning tender contract for the refurbishment of the Barrow Park play area in Cumbria. The play area refurbishment cost £120,000 which was just one part of the 2 million pound refurbishment project that was under taken in Barrow Park. Barrow Park is located in Barrow in Furness, Lake District, Cumbria. The park is set in 45 acres of land and was originally designed by the acclaimed landscape architect Thomas Mawson in 1900. John Hutton - The Furness Area MP, stated that: “the park is a very central feature of Barrow and has a special place in the hearts of most local people”.

Gosforth gets an upgrade Playdale Playgrounds were delighted to be awarded the winning tender contract for Gosforth Play Area. The play area was in desperate need of a refurbishment and locals from the village are delighted with the results. The existing equipment was minimal and outdated, lacking imagination. Now children can enjoy a fantastic mix of equipment that caters for all ages, including; a Little Hamlet unit, Timber Team Swing, a Play Ship, and Activity Panels.

The park was in great need for a new play area as the previous one was old, lacking in equipment and not appealing for the children within the community.

The play area was completed in 2011 at the cost of £54,000, which was raised through a number of grants and community fundraising.

The World’s First Intelligent Play System!

Claire Gallery-Strong, the Project Manager for the site, was delighted with the service and end result: “It is a real pleasure to have used your company and we will be telling other local projects how pleased we have been.”

This exciting state-of-the-art play area now consists of a large Rock and Roll unit from the Jukebox range scaling 4.6meters high, a 1.8m Cone Climber, an Encounter Teenage Seating unit, Interactive Play Panels, Swings, Glenduckie toddler unit from the Little Hamlets range, Springers and much more. The area caters for all ages and abilities, is DDA compliant and contains wetpour safety surfacing throughout. It can be enjoyed by local residents as well as visiting tourists.

Children in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, became the first in the UK to trial the i.play in July 2007. The i.play continues to be a success in the town and is still extremely popular with local children. Mr Bill Brown, Barrow Borough Council’s Parks Manager said; “As a borough we try to provide safe and stimulating play opportunities for children and this is certainly something that is very different to the fixed equipment we’ve had before.”

Our designers have developed the Jukebox Selection for use by both able bodied children and those with special needs. Care has been taken to develop the Inclusive Access, a special system of access platforms for children who are less physically able, with ample room for helpers. The size and shape of the steps between the three levels have been developed with assistance from children and their carers. The handles are curved and angled for maximum ease of use and accessibility. The edges of the steps are shaped to aid access, and marked in bright orange for extra visibility. The access also includes a transfer platform for wheelchair users. Activity panels can also be added at high and low levels. Wide slides enable children and carers to share the activity.

Our designers have developed the Big City range for use by both able bodied children and those with special needs. Care has been taken to develop the Inclusive Chute and Inclusive Net (above), a special system of access platforms for children who are less physically able, with ample room for helpers. The size and shape of the modules have been developed with assistance from children and their carers. The handles are curved and angled for maximum ease of use and accessibility. The edge of the platform is shaped to aid access, and marked in bright orange for extra visability. The access also includes a transfer platform for wheelchair users. Activity panels can also be added at high and low levels. Wide slides enable children and carers to share the activity.

We were invited to an international tender by PepsiCo Ltd for Walkers to be involved in an exciting new project ‘Parks for Life’. We were delighted to be awarded with the contract to design and install exciting and innovative new playgrounds for the pilot year of the Parks for Life project. Speaking about i.play on the regional television news programme, Thames Valley Today, Gary Lineker said “there are all too many distractions nowadays with computer games and playstations; it’s quite hard to get kids off the sofa so something like this which is obviously great fun will definitely encourage them to do that!”

St. Matthaus Ein Zuhause fur kinder is a popular Evangelical Church in Bremen, decided to build the play area to give children a place to play whilst parents went to mass or visited the community centre. Why don’t you add a bit of magic to your play area with Playdale’s customised theming? Our graphic artists can produce unique designs, based on your own ideas or created from their own imagination, which will add a special touch to your play area. From the provision of a simple sign to elaborate entrance ways, equipment panels or stand-alone play boards – the possibilities really are endless. The Falkirk Wheel Mountain Tower included themed panels, painted timber poles and tube slide graphics. The Encounter unit (top left) was created in custom CGL colours with roof graphics. The Little Hamlet unit (top right) was created in custom colours with a themed tunnel. The entire area was surfaced with themed wetpour.

Murals

Encounter provides the missing link between the child that needs conventional play equipment to young teenagers who do not wish to be seen â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;playingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; but still need a facility where they can socialise with their contemporaries. Every visual and ergonomic element of the design has been created using consultation with youths between 11 and 17. The technical design, in terms of its engineering and composition of materials meets the requirements of BS EN 1176. Although not strictly play equipment we believe this rigorous standard should still apply, particularly in terms of strength testing, knowing from our experience in the industry that this group will climb, crawl, hang and use the structure in ways for which it was not necessarily intended.

When providing a safe environment for children to play in, the surface on which they play is particularly important. We all know that from time to time children will accidentally fall from even the safest piece of equipment when playing. The purpose of safer surfacing is to cushion the impact of a childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s accidental fall and reduce the severity of an injury.

GrassLok GrassLok consists of 0.5m x 0.5m interlocking recycled PVC / rubber tiles designed specifically for use as safety surfacing underneath play equipment. The tiles allow existing grass to grow through, which can then be mown as usual. GrassLok can provide a critical fall height (CFH) of up to 3m. However, the CFH is dependant on site specific factors such as soil type, soil moisture levels and grass growth, our Area Sales Managers can advise you on this.

To meet the requirements of BS EN 1176 and BS EN 1177, Playdale recommend that impact absorbing surfaces must be installed beneath all equipment with a free height of fall greater than 0.6m. We offer a wide range of safer surfacing, including wet pour, tiles, synthetic grass and loosefill. In some circumstances a well maintained natural grass surface can be considered as a safer surface up to a free fall height of 1.5m. The appropriate surfacing for your site will depend on several factors; type of equipment, cost, durability, aesthetic appearance, maintenance and local ground and climatic conditions. Our Area Managers can advise you on all aspects of safer surfacing. All surfacing offered by Playdale has been independently tested to ensure full compliance with BS EN 1177 and BS 7188. The installation of each surfacing type is closely monitored through our ISO9001 quality system to ensure the required standards are constantly met.

Wet Pour

Loosefill

Wet Pour is a continuous rubber surface that gives a high quality, hard wearing, slip-resistant surface requiring little or no maintenance.

Loose-fill safer surfacing has excellent impact absorbing properties and combines well with many units to give a warm, natural appearance.

Mixed on site, the rubber EPDM granule and polyurethane resin mixture is wet laid to various thicknesses onto a prepared area.

The capital cost of loosefill surfacing is far less than wet pour and tiles, however maintenance costs (i.e. raking and topups) should be taken into account.

The thickness and area of wet pour is determined by the free height of fall of the equipment installed. The correct thickness and area of wet pour is laid around each piece of equipment to provide a sufficient level of impact absorbency. Wet Pour is available in a range of colours. Although the standard colour is black, a coloured fleck can be added to enhance appearance of the finished area. Coloured shapes, logos and floor games can be laid into the surface to give an individual theme and provide additional play value. Wet Pour complies with BS EN 1177 and BS 7188. Test certificates are supplied for all thicknesses offered.

To meet the requirements of BS EN 1176 and BS EN 1177, all Playdale loosefill surfaces should be maintained to a depth of 250mm. The use of raised loosefill areas will aid drainage. 250mm of impact absorbing loosefill material

Cushionfall

This is an environmentally friendly surface, produced from recycled timber products. The shredded timber gives excellent impact absorbing properties and is provided in a variety of colours.

Playgrade Bark

This high quality graded pine bark gives an attractive surface, which is well suited to most locations and for use with the majority of equipment.

Sand

In some situations playgrade sand is an effective loosefill surface. It is also a play medium in its own right.

Gravel

Gravel can also provide an attractive and safe Loosefill surface option. All Playdale loosefill impact absorbing surfaces have been independently tested to guarantee full compliance with BS EN 1177 and BS 7188. Test certificates are supplied for all loosefill surfaces. The rubber tiles we use provide a finished surface with similar properties as wet pour. The tiles are laid onto a prepared concrete base.

Extreme Designed to hold up to the wear and tear of childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s play, NoMow Extreme consists of soft polypropylene fibres infilled with a sterile recycled rubber granule, adding extra cushion and comfort. Available in 1m, 1.7m, 2.2m, 3.0m critical fall heights.

The tiles are prefabricated, 1m x 1m, and are supplied in various thicknesses.

Impact Impact provides a soft, neat synthetic grass surface to protect your play area. It consists of four colour grass and a brown thatch system to provide a strong, durable surface with added comfort. Available in 1.0m, 1.7m, 2.2m, 2.8m critical fall heights.

The standard colour is black but the tiles are also available in red, green, and blue.

Quad Pavers

Quad Pavers can be a cost effective way of providing a wear & tear resistant surface at small points of high wear. 20mm thick, hard wearing, black rubber tiles are bonded onto 50mm thick concrete paving slabs (600mm x 600mm). Quad Pavers can be installed flush into existing grass surfaces to provide a child friendly path or at points of high wear i.e. adjacent to Springers or at the end of Adventure Trails.

Surface Fixing Surface Fixing is the securest way to install your play equipment onto concrete. It is an advanced plating system that allows you to bolt equipment to the floor quickly, easily and safely.

Safety Mattas This system is designed to promote maximum grass growth to create an aesthetically pleasing installation that blends in to the environment. Once the grass is established it can be simply mowed over as usual. The Safety Mattas system consists of two separate layers, a mesh underlay and the rubber & PVC mats. Safety Matta has been independently tested to BS EN 1177 and BS 7188 providing a critical fall height of 2.7m.

Laminated Timber Poles

All round timber poles on Playdale Playground equipment are laminated. Produced from extremely slow grown pine from totally sustainable managed forests. Laminated timber vastly reduces the natural effect of fibre separation that causes splits in the poles - gives high strength, highly engineered timber poles. Laminated timber (Glulam) sections are produced according to EN386:2001. Extremely smooth, high quality machined finish in 140mm, 120mm and 100mm diameters. Glued joint is even stronger than the timber itself. Strict quality control ensures consistency through continual tests during production process. All protruding edges are finished with a machined radius to give a smooth and splinter free finish in accordance with BS EN 1176. Covered by a 20 year guarantee against structural failure.

Sawn Timber

Steel Frames

Steel Frames are from strong corrosion resistant galvanised steel for floors and brackets. Covered by 15 year guarantee against structural failure.

Painted Steelwork

Shot blasted in-house to ensure greater quality control and then primed with a corrosion inhibiting zinc based epoxy primer. The components are then sprayed with two coats of specially formulated twin pack polyurethane paint to give a tough, durable finish. All paints are lead free in accordance with the Toy Directive EN 71. Our spray finish is covered by a surface corrosion guarantee of 5 years.
