Surfboards

I

t was in July of 1885 when three Hawaiian princes, David Kawananakoa, Edward Keliiahonui and Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana’ole introduced surfing to Santa Cruz and mainland America. The princes had used local Redwood trees from the Santa Cruz mountains, which they milled in the shape of traditional Hawaiian o’lo boards and surfed the mouth of the San Lorenzo River in the middle of Santa Cruz. For the next 40 years or more, Redwood shipped from Northern California across the Pacific became the primary material for the construction of Hawaiian surfboards. Santa Cruz being the first town introduced to surfing in mainland America, has been noted as Surf City USA, and has a rich history in surfing dating back to July of 1885. With that in mind, Doug Haut & Rich Novak started Santa Cruz Surfboards in the ‘60s. With over 50 years of shaping experience behind Doug Haut’s belt, Doug has shaped some amazing balsa, polyester and epoxy surfboards, and now has some of his master crafts produced in Santa Cruz’s exclusive Powerlyte Technology to share with the world!

Powerlyte

This is what our pros asked for. The upper echelon. Cream of the crop. TwinTurbo, supercharged. Light, fast, powerful, snappy. 30% lighter 30% more flex. We started making surfboards back in 1970 with Doug Haut hand shaping each surfboard. Over the past 40+ years, we grew into one of the largest skateboard companies in the world and all that time Doug Haut kept everyone in Santa Cruz stoked with his custom boards. When the technology finally

emerged to create an advanced composite surfboard, we developed Powerlyte in our own factory to share, grow and expand our surfboard line. Beginning with Santa Cruz shapers and pros, testing the boards in some of the best point, reef and beach break waves in the world we have grown to include shapers and pros from Australia, Hawaii and Brazil. We believe that our Powerlyte technology creates a better surfboard for pros and Bros alike.

Every Powerlyte board includes a set of high quality fiberglass Curtis fins, which provide optimum performance and accuracy for each application. Engineered by Curtis Hesslegrave, these are the best templates money can buy. These come as standard equipment on Santa Cruz models.

The Fang deck was designed by fusing together our most popular short board models - the GDECK and the Ozzie Wright models. The Fang deck combines the speed, quickness and pop of the Ozzie, with the strength, comfort and skateboard like contours of the GDECK. We have also added shaped in foot wells, as well as “fangs” on the nose for added strength and stiffness.

This board is great for gaining and maintaining speed in beach breaks or slower point waves. Ride it as a three fin for more hold and tighter pocket arcs, or as a quad for gliding and sliding. The fang decks flatter tail rocker cambered foot wells, and rigid deck contours are great for going to the air. Flat rocker for pop, foot wells for a ”locked in” feeling, and rigid deck for solid “flex free” landings.

Soybeans The Soy Bean is the sister board to the Pumpkin Seed. With a round pin tail and 2 plus 1 fin set up, this board is super responsive, fast and loose as any shortboard you’ve ever ridden. It comes with a fuller nose, which resembles a longboard nose, so you can nose ride like a champ on it. It’s the perfect board for small conditions and is ideal for the days you’d be struggling on your normal shortboard. So, get your nose ride on, cheat 5, or get radical on this fun little puppy!

“The Soy Bean design came about with the help of our Japanese riders and myself. We wanted to build a really fun board to work well in most conditions and with the 2+1 fin set up, one can really experiment with a wide range of fin combinations. This board will nose ride, plane well and go off the lip with ease. It’s a really exciting board to ride.” -Doug Haut

y h c r A The Archy-Bullet is a versatile high performance short board designed by Kalu Coletta for legendary surfing innovator Matt Archbold. Like Archy himself, the Bullet model is “Built for Speed.” The slightly shorter, wider outline, with a lower entry rocker make this board extremely fast right out of the gates as well as an excellent wave catcher and paddler. The fine-tuned bottom contours along with shorter, curvier rail line make the Bullet extremely loose and allow tighter radius turns in the pocket. The unique diamond tail design gives the Bullet more hold for Archy’s high speed carves, but also allows controlled release. The 5 fin option also gives the rider freedom to experiment with thruster or quad set ups depending on wave conditions or individual preference.

PLATINUM SERIES LONGBOARD

I’ve spent the last few years working with Doug Haut on the Platinum series Manufactured by Santa Cruz. I wanted to combine Haut’s historic templates and rockers with the Santa Cruz composite technology in a way that would produce a modern classic noserider. We used a wider outline giving the boards more curve through the tail for really smooth turns and a full nose for added hang time. Both sizes are single fins, with heavier core foam to give them that old school glide. I ride the 9’0” at beach breaks and the 10’0” at the smaller point breaks. Hope you enjoy the glide! Aloha,

“This longboard design is for medium to overhead waves. They’re very high performance boards with a lot of drive and go easy off the top. They can be ridden in smaller waves as well, but excel in good surf.” -Doug Haut
