Every bride wants their wedding to be unique and a true reflection of their personal style and taste. But it is becoming increasingly difficult to do something really different. Fireworks, ice sculptures and even releasing doves have all been seen and done before. However, every now and again you come across something that really stands out. We ‘discovered’ Yummy Favours a few months ago and were really impressed with their bespoke wedding favours. We were amazed how they even match the bride’s colour scheme with their range of edible glitter. Since our first contact, they have released a new creation - a towering strawberry centrepiece that looks really yummy! Whether used as part of a champagne reception, in place of the ubiquitous ‘chocolate’ fountain or even to replace the wedding cake, this unique centrepiece will certainly make an eye-catching and memorable display. So who is behind this company? We did some digging and found that the husband and wife team - Andy & Maria Moorhouse - left their jobs in the corporate world because they wanted to channel their passion and energy into something that really makes a lasting impression.

yummy! We are certainly looking forward to the samples arriving at our office, especially their ‘bride and groom’ apples, handmade truffles and chocolate strawberry favours which are all hand dipped in Belgian chocolate. If you want some inspiration then why not check out their website

Sarah Houston wedding gowns are a direct reflection of her design philosophy that combines timeless romanticism and enduring elegance while capturing the spirit of old world charm and the essence of today. Sarah draws her inspiration from many sources and has created each gown with its own unique personality. Every one of her dresses has been uniquely inspired by her travels to some of the world’s most romantic places. The inspiration for many of her gowns was found in churches & cathedrals in Italy & France, in medieval villages and castles in England & Spain and in museums and art galleries throughout Europe.

{

{

Brides have so often described the feeling of wearing her dresses as being “immersed in liquid gold” Sarah has individually crafted each gown to tell its own unique story of love, beauty and romance. From flirty to sensuous to classically elegant there is a dress to suit any bride’s personality and passion. To capture the essence and individuality of each gown Sarah custom designs all her own laces to create a signature look that is truly authentic & original. What makes this collection so romantic and timeless is how she combines lush satin crepes with silk chiffons and organzas each immersed in textures designed to flow. Every gown undergoes strict and classic tailoring with meticulous attention to detail. Subtle finishing touches such as soft pleats, fluid lines and vintage cultural and artistic beadwork complete the picture. To ensure the ultimate in comfort all of Sarah’s dresses are made of the highest quality silks and are cut precisely to fit and flatter the body. Quality doesn’t stop on the outside as all of Sarah’s gowns are lined in luxurious silk as well. That’s why brides have so often described the feeling of wearing her dresses as being “immersed in liquid gold”

Vicki & Tony Dreams can come true...

We talked about a few options; Tony liked the idea of going to Las Vegas and being married by Elvis, which I wasn’t totally against, but at the end of the day, I really wanted a beach wedding. We looked into Mexico, as we had both been on holiday there and we also looked at Italy & Cyprus but none of them seemed quite right for us. One day we saw a competition in You & Your Wedding magazine to win a dream wedding and honeymoon in the Cayman Islands, and a designer wedding dress by fashion designer Ben de Lisi. I looked the Cayman Islands up on the internet, because to be honest it wasn’t a place we knew a lot about. We both associated the Cayman Islands with the mystique and exclusivity of the Virgin Islands, Maldives etc...a place we would absolutely love to go to but never imagined we would be able to afford to. When we looked at the Cayman Islands department of tourism board’s website, we thought WOW!!! what a beautiful place, it looked like paradise.

{

{

Weddings in Liverpool are a huge event, the full works!

W 23

e never really wanted to go down the route of the big white wedding largely due to the cost - basically, there was no way we could afford to do it the way we wanted to, and besides that, getting married in the sun always appealed to us. We really fancied the idea of running off with a few close friends and family - and then having a big party when we got back.

The Cayman Islands beat every expectation we had. Both Grand Cayman & Little Cayman are even more beautiful in real life. The turquoise ocean and the white sandy beaches are breathtaking; the people are all so friendly and welcoming - they would help you out with anything. We were absolutely blown away with the place. Our families & friends were very excited when we won the competition, and we were extremely fortunate that our close family came to the Cayman Islands with us. When they saw the Caymans on the internet and in the brochures, they couldn’t believe that we would be getting married in such a fantastic place either!

We stayed at the Caribbean Club on Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman & the Southern Cross Club on Little Cayman. The Caribbean Club – WOW! Our reaction when we arrived here was OH MY GOD!!! The apartment was like something of MTV Cribs....it was absolutely fantastic. We had a huge top floor apartment, three bedrooms, three bathrooms, modern, brand new and gorgeous.... we didn’t think it could get much better until we opened one of the many patio doors and saw the balcony and the view!!!.....the beautiful Seven Mile Beach and the clear blue ocean...the first thing we did was open the bottle of wine we got in a welcome basket in the room and sat on our balcony!!....this was the life. As for The Southern Cross Club on Little Cayman – HEAVEN! We had our own beach bungalow on our own piece of paradise...tranquil, relaxing & beautiful. In total contrast to Caribbean Club the Southern Cross is rustic and retreatlike, it was as if we had our own desert island, a perfect place to spend our honeymoon. Celebrations is the Caymanian company that organised our wedding, and we would highly recommend them to anyone getting married on the Cayman Islands. I started liaising with Juliette and Miss Jo, who owns Celebrations, a few months before the wedding and they asked me to tell them my ideas, my likes & dislikes...and during our first telephone conversation they put my mind totally at ease. I trusted them completely. They kept in touch with me constantly and provided me with updates on everything.

After the wedding ceremony we moved from the beach to around the pool which had also been decorated...the theme was carried on here too with starfish and lanterns...fabulous. We had champagne and canapés, and every mouthful was delicious. From here we then went back up to our room and held the rest of our reception on our huge ocean front balcony. Our reception looked magical with the beautiful tables, more candles, and lanterns ...all done to create an intimate meal for us and our family; it was just what we wanted. The food was provided by Luca, the fantastic Italian restaurant at the Caribbean Club, Luca, and they had one of their lovely staff serve us all night. We had a five course menu and every course was gorgeous. The food and the wine/ champagne just kept flowing all night. It was definitely a time that my family will never forget, we were all treated like celebrities.

{

The wedding itself was beyond anything I could have imagined - it was sheer perfection. The attention to detail on everything was phenomenal, and both Tony & I were absolutely blown away by the cake, bouquets, boutonnieres, the reception table.....they were all amazing. A crystal, starfish & shell theme was used throughout ....they were even within my bouquet!! The beach looked fantastic with some beautiful lanterns; everything was Unbelievable! Our wedding was something you would see in a movie or in a celebrity magazine, we were privileged that Celebrations created such a magical day for us, it was a fairy tale that we will never forget.

{

My wedding dress designed just for me by top fashion designer Ben de Lisi!!

After we won the competition I couldn’t believe that I was going to be lucky enough to have my wedding dress designed just for me by top fashion designer Ben de Lisi!! I knew I wanted something elegant and beautiful, nothing too over-the-top, as I am quite petite and I didn’t want anything that would swamp me. I saw a dress design at the Designer Wedding in London, where the competition finals were held,

which I really liked, and as it transpired, this design turned out to be the design Ben De Lisi sketched for the You and Your Wedding competition, so I thought it was fate!! Ben altered the design slightly for me and the end result was jaw dropping. My dress is ivory silk, very fitted, with a flowery fan design swooping around it; these are embodied with Swarovski crystals. It is absolutely gorgeous. We can’t name just one highlight of our wedding day....the whole experience of the day was unbelievable.. The one thing we can say is that we were so honoured that our family could enjoy the day with us as we know that some of them sacrificed a lot to join us, it made our time on the Cayman Islands even more special. We spent our honeymoon on Little Cayman, a forty minute flight away from Grand Cayman, where we stayed at one of the only three resorts on the island, the Southern Cross Club. We stayed in a beach bungalow, one of 12...so you really got the feeling that you are on your own paradise island. The people there were all fantastic and they really looked after us - nothing

was too much trouble, and we were really spoilt. We spent our days on Little Cayman relaxing in the sun, snorkelling, fishing and exploring the island. There are only 150 residents on the island and we made some good friends on Little Cayman....it’s a perfect honeymoon location. We have so many memories of our time on the Cayman Islands: its beauty, the friendliness of the people, fantastic food, fabulous trips – a helicopter tour over the reef; the Atlantis submarine, Stingray City, deep sea fishing, snorkelling, the friends that we have made...and of course our wedding day. If you are a couple planning on getting married abroad we would definitely encourage you to make sure you do your research and read the reviews. When we did this there was not one negative review of the Cayman Islands, or of the wedding planning company Celebrations, nor of the Caribbean Club or the Southern Cross Club. We knew we were in good hands. And so we were! *Pictures courtesy of photographer David Wolfe

TASMANIA HONEYMOON OFFER

The Turquoise Holiday Company is a specialist in tailor made and authentic holidays to Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific, Indian Ocean and Africa. Turquoise also specialises in putting together customised honeymoons and weddings for couples who are seeking a memorable experience with no attention to detail spared. As one of the few companies that features the boutique and little known destination of Tasmania, there is no better holiday company to ask for a honeymoon in Australia’s only island state.

24

Exclusively for Lush Weddings, Turquoise has come up with the following itinerary which combines beautifully three of the most romantic and luxurious boutique properties in Australia with the world-renowned Bay of Fires walk and wilderness lodge – voted the world’s number one place to visit in 2009 by Lonely Planet. This is a honeymoon for couples who love wilderness, walking and wildlife; who want to get off the beaten track and away from the masses; for those who want more than the classic ‘fly and flop’ holiday, but still enjoy life’s creature comforts and gourmet food and wines.

Your honeymoon begins with a short flight from the mainland of Australia into Hobart where you will spend three nights at the five star Islington Hotel in Hobart. Exquisitely furnished and tucked away at the foot of towering Mount Wellington, the Islington is the perfect pampering spot from which to explore southern Tasmania by car with the Tasman Peninsula and beautiful Bruny Island National Park an easy drive away. Both boast the highest cliffs in the Southern Hemisphere, and attractions include the Port Arthur Historic Site, one of Australia’s most extraordinary penal settlements, and the countries largest fur seal colonies. The lush Derwent Valley beckons, and three nights at the newly opened Priory Country House, sister property to the Islington, allows a leisurely exploration of this little known area which yields some of the finest wineries and local and organic producers in Tasmania, along with miles of walking, fishing and wildlife spotting. Spend a day at The Agrarian Kitchen in a restored school house learning to cook delicious dishes from the smallholding run by Australia’s answer to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, or learn to fly fish together in some of the cleanest lakes in the world, stuffed full of brown trout, and cook your daily catch for a mouth-watering barbeque dinner under the stars back at the Priory, courtesy of your host, Stuart. The last few days are spent in the far north east of Tasmania, enjoying a guided walk along the most pristine wild beaches in the world – the Bay of Fires – with two nights spent under the stars and one in the contemporary yet entirely sustainable Bay of Fires Lodge, once again accompanied by the freshest of seafood and drinking the crispest of new world wines. Here, in a group of maximum eight, you will make friends for life.Two nights at the newly opened Quamby Estate, Tasmania’s grandest yet most relaxed homestead, allows sheer luxury and comfort to prevail with plenty of time for the two of you to explore the north eastern forests of Tasmania.

3 nights at the Islington, 3 nights at The Priory, 1 night at Quamby Estate, 4 day / 3 night Bay of Fires Walk and 2 final nights at Quamby Estate - with flights (to Melbourne with Malaysia Airlines and domestics to Hobart / from Launceston with Qantas) and car hire costs from ÂŁ2795 per person based on 2 sharing. The best time to travel to Tasmania to enjoy the peak summer weather and wilderness is between November and May. Jewels fit for a

www.radianceboutique.co.uk share their tips on choosing the right jewellery When it comes to choosing jewellery to complement your wedding day style the number of possibilities can seem overwhelming. The look created by a bride for her big day is a combination of personality, glamour, and that fairytale twist. The overall style of your wedding is so personal. If you’re having a pretty English garden style wedding with soft feminine touches let your accessories be inspired by this with delicate pieces. On the other hand, for an elaborate grandiose wedding, accessorising with glamorous jewellery will keep up the red carpet factor. Your dress can also inform your decision. Pearls will enhance and beautifully complement smooth satin fabric. Swarovski beading on your dress works beautifully with Swarovski crystal and pearl accessories. Detail on the back of your bodice can be tied in with hair accessories such as a crystal comb or by adding crystal hair pins. Layers of lace work well with equally delicate pearls. Think about your day to day style too. If you don’t usually wear a lot of jewellery keep it simple with one or two classic pieces. The extra touches on your day will make you feel special but it’s important that you still feel like yourself ! A great way to approach the decision is to look at the current trends in wedding accessories and pick the one that works best for you. There really is something for everyone right now with florals, layers, statement and vintage inspired pieces all hot looks for 2009. This summer pretty floral accessories or flowers

prin

in your hair are the perfect addition to this season’s knee length dresses. Perfect for a girly fairytale wedding The super stylish trend for layering works well with intricate rows of smaller pearls as a simple way to enhance your look. Statement pieces are huge right now. Opt for one key piece that really makes an impact. Bold, show stopping hair accessories and bracelets can be perfect for this. Vintage inspired looks are a really glam way to go about your finishing touches. A set of Hollywood style earrings can be all you need to perfect a look. And let’s not forget your bridesmaids! They can easily tie in to your look by adding a touch of colour with hair accessories or keeping up the floral theme across their jewellery too. Most importantly, follow your heart; have fun, and capture your style - you will shine on your wedding day!

Wedding planner and designer Zoe Lingard shares her tips for wedding design

S

IMAGES COURTESY OF KAREN TRAN HATT

o much of good design is about achieving balance and this is a great principle to bear in mind as you design your wedding. For example, if you are using very bold colours in your floral arrangements, balance this with more subtle table linen, if your venue has very high ceilings balance this with tall table centres or candelabra, if your dress is very ornate balance this with a simple non edged, single tier veil. Avoid thinking of your wedding in terms of separate items on a long to do list and instead view things holistically where design isn’t just an after thought but affects 90% of your decisions. To achieve great results it’s important that you think how decisions such as stationery, table settings, attire, flowers and even entertainment all work together to create one overall ‘look’. At the outset, before doing much more than drawing up a guest list and calculating a budget, sit down and think about the overall look you are trying to achieve. Collect images and items that inspire you and come up with at least two different concepts that you can choose between. This will allow you to make an informed decision about the design of your wedding and also give you a clear direction when it comes to making decisions. When confirming your colour scheme think about your reception venue, what colours are already there and what colours are therefore best avoided. Fighting a clashing colour scheme can often be a losing battle and costly to correct in the form of drapes and chair covers. Most weddings feature a lot of white and when this is combined with one other colour, the overall look can be very harsh. To avoid this, select a min mum of two colours when choosing your colour palette.

This will soften things and mean you avoid a heavy, overwhelming finished look. As much as people will tell you they don’t, the details really do matter. Now this needn’t mean

blowing your budget on expensive favours or sending yourself crazy over matching napkin shades with cravats. Instead, putting a little extra thought into items that complete the overall look, personalise things and/or help your guests feel welcome and appreciated really do go a long way. If you’re struggling to make a colour palette choice, go for green.

36

Green is the colour of tranquillity and makes one of the most versatile colour options. In the same way, if you’re struggling to find an accent colour chocolate browns is a great option and goes with just about everything. And finally, don’t be afraid to do something unusual or daring. Just because certain colours and styles are used frequently for weddings doesn’t mean you should follow suit. Go to unusual places in search of inspiration, watch films, visit art galleries and don’t be afraid to experiment. Create something that you love and that is personal to you and you’ll have the perfect wedding.

A few words from Zoë “Hi there, my name is Zoë and I’m the managing director of Weddings by Zoë Lingard, a London based wedding planning company. Wedding Photography Hints & Tips

Photographer Pete Norton offers expert advice on all things photography

What is a Storybook Package?

L

ast time I spoke about contacting photographers and the things you should be asking so that you can be certaint hey are the right photographer to record your wedding day. So now you have chosen to meet up with one or two photographers the next thing to decide is what type of coverage you wish your photographer to supply.

I am going to start with the story book package. The amount of the proceedings you wish to have covered is entirely up to you, never let photographers tell you what you are going to have, it’s your wedding day and you should decide what you want or do not want to be photographed. Your meeting should always be a case of sitting down and negotiating a package that suits you, your personality, your lifestyle, and of course your pocket. Oh and it always helps to offer us a nice cup of tea or coffee as well. Don’t know why but I always end up throwing in a couple of freebies when I’m talking to a prospective bride and drinking tea. It’s always nice when the bride asks to be pho-

tographed for the whole day which is what the story book covers. This way the bride will receive a full fairytale story of images starting with herself getting ready and all her helpers flurrying around all excited. There is normally a bottle of bubbly on the go and the queue for the bathroom mirror seems endless. The phone never seems to stop ringing either with well wishers wanting to give their regards. Then suddenly the hairdressers arrive shortly followed by the makeup artists and everything gets really girly. I love this point as I always get fantastic shots from this hive of activity and the images just look amazing when they are placed in their album. Then comes the time when the bride gets into her beautiful dress. Now I get all the detail shots of the dress itself. It can be sequins on the bodice or the stitched embroidery on the skirt or the flowing veil floating along behind her when she walks. To me these are such important details for the bride to be able to look back on in years to come. After a few shots with the bridesmaids I normally jump in the car and go over to where the groom and his entourage are waiting which is usually at the church. I have such a blast with the lads. They are always feeling a bit nervous and even a little overhung from drinking the night before so they are up for anything I ask them to do. Then it’s into the church to take images of the guests sitting patiently in the pews and by this time the groom and best man are also sat at the front ready for the arrival of the bride. Soon it’s time for the bride to arrive and I’m outside ready and watching for the car to come around the corner.

I like to get a couple of images of the bride and her dad sat in the back of the car or what ever means of transport they may have arrived in. Then a couple more with dad helping her out from the back seat, a quick pose with the bride and the car and it’s off into the church for the grand arrival. During the ceremony I like to get as much of the event as possible such as the giving of rings the blessing, the first kiss as a married couple and the signing of the register. Once out of the church I like to let the couple have a few moments with their friends and family before taking the more formal group shots but I still keep clicking away to grab those oh so special images such as granny still drying the tears from her eyes but trying to keep smiling at the same time. Back in the car again and it’s off to the reception where I try to get shots of the place settings and the beautiful cake. After a short while of the bride and groom arriving at the venue I get them to have a mock cake cutting before sitting down to the wedding breakfast. Now comes the time for all the speeches and they can be so funny but they can also be very moving. At this point I will normally go and sit down for about half an hour for a well earned drink and a bite to eat which is supplied by the bride and groom as part of the contract. I will still keep my camera switched on just in case I see something going on that needs my attention. Come the evening time guests have arrived for the evening reception and it’s time for the couple’s first dance. I like to get as many shots as I can of this as the lighting can be really awkward to work with. A few more images of the guests and family dancing to the Time warp or Abba’s Dancing Queen and kids skidding across the dance floor on their knees and it’s time for me to get back to the studio to download and back up all the images taken over the course of the day. In next months issue I will be talking about various other types of packages available from your photographer. Less is more works best for modern looks. Cute cuts like Audrey He pburn’s short hair have remained modern fro m the 1950’s up until now. It works well for outdoor weddings, casual ceremonies and contemporar y locations. Choosing a sim ple dress works best with a gorgeous and decorative hairstyle. Elaborate dresses should be complimented with a simpler hairstyle. Accessories like a bride veil in modern styles don’t cover the bride’s face. 1920’s hair, ma ke-up and fashion are a contemporar y and popular choice for modern styles.

Choosing your Dilly and Taylor bespoke venue

hoping to achieve, it is often advisable to meet your venue stylist who can gain an idea of your personality, and the styles you like. They can then show you ideas you may like in person, and even create a brief mock up of the tables and chairs so you can see for yourself how it will look. Alternatively, your supplier ought to be able to send you fabric swatches and other information in the post for you to consider and compare.

ashion and favourite colours often dictate a bride’s colour palette, but it is important to remember to ensure your colours and style are sympathetic to the room you are dressing. Modern hotels and similar venues have neutral colour schemes leaving your choices much more open than if you opt for an historic stately home or castle, or the older, more characterful hotels, which require more careful dressing to bring out their innate beauty. In either case, a good venue dresser will be able to advise and guide your choices so that you can create a unique look without clashing with the existing dÊcor. A good venue dresser will have an extensive range of colours for you to choose from. Sometimes it is a good idea to use several complementing shades of the same colour to give interest to the room. Often, sticking strictly to the same colour can produce a flat and lifeless effect. Another good idea is to use different fabrics to give texture. Your supplier should be able to recommend suitable colour combinations and suggest the best ways to achieve the look you desire. In order to gain an idea of what it is you are

Not all chair covers fit all chairs – and one size does not fit all! Even standard banqueting chairs can vary dramatically from venue to venue, or even from room to room. Therefore, any chair cover hire company will have several variously sized sets of covers in stock. Make sure your chair cover supplier has been to the venue to try to covers on the chairs prior to booking to be certain of a good fit. Some companies simply courier stock to the venue for you or the hotel staff fit the covers and sashes. Other companies merely arrive at the venue, put the covers on the chairs and tie the sashes. Chair covers, even on hangers, do not travel well. No amount of careful packing can ensure a crease free finish, and creased chair covers resemble dust sheets more than a wedding standard enhancement to your venue. There is no substitute for steam pressing each cover individually on site. Ask your chair cover supplier how they transport the stock and how it is fitted and pressed. Another important point is the collection of the stock. Who is responsible for collecting the chair covers and sashes after the event and returning them to the supplier? When does the supplier require the chair covers back? Some companies seek to minimise stain damage by collecting the covers prior to the evening celebrations, and some

require you to return them yourself the next day. A good supplier will arrange with the venue staff access time to collect their own stock without the need to disturb the wedding party. It is to be expected that some staining of covers and sashes will occur at any wedding. A good supplier knows this and will have arranged a contingency for such events. Good quality laundering can remove most stains so that stock is as fresh for the next bride as for the first and any permanently damaged items must be discarded, as should any stock that begins to look tired and worn. Make sure you know your suppliers policy regarding missing or damaged items and how their quality control process for the reuse of stock is implemented.
