12 BEAUTIFUL, MINDFULLY CREATED IN-DEPTH PORTRAITS OF JAPANESE MAKERS IN WORDS AND PHOTOS, INCLUDING INFORMATION ABOUT DIFFERENT REGIONS TO VISIT IN JAPAN

The Japanese concept ‘Shosa’ is hard to translate: it’s about the beauty that lies in the repetition of actions and movements, striving for perfection and efficiency in their execution. You can find it in the rituals of a Japanese tea ceremony, but also in the repetition of cleaning actions (like in the movie Perfect Days) or in the skilful actions of craftsmen and -women.

This book portrays 12 Japanese makers from different regions. From a bamboo weaver to a tatami mats maker, from a ceramist to a cook who specialises in puddings. Writer Ringo Gomez-Jorge and photographer Rob Walbers went to visit these makers in their studios and created profound portraits in words and images. Because the craftsmen and -women often rely on locally sourced materials, the stories in this book also cover the surroundings. The aim isn’t to provide tourist guide-like information, but to share a taste of various regions in Japan, so this book can also serve as a source of inspiration when you’re planning a trip to the Land of the Rising Sun.

STORIES ABOUT HOW THE WORLD EXPOS OF 1855–1937 SHAPED PARIS , FROM ITS ARCHITECTURE TO CULINARY INVENTIONS, AND WHERE TO FIND THE TRACES

Paris is the physical memory of seven World Expos that took place in the city from 1855 to 1937. These Expos left behind monuments like the Eiffel Tower, the Musée d’Orsay, the Grand and Petit Palais… But many traces are more subtle: your suitcase today is an evolution of the trunk Louis Vuitton won a gold medal with at Paris’ Exposition Universelle in 1867, and the typical Parisian bistro chairs were designed during those years when a multitude of cafés and restaurants flourished because of the Expos, including icons like Le Procope.

Nobody Sits Like the French is a cocktail of a history book and a travel guide. Author Charles Pappas shares interesting and intriguing stories about monuments, culinary institutions and many more, pointing out the marks the Expos left behind. From now on, you’ll know that every time you sip a glass of burgundy, drink from Baccarat crystal, admire a Manet or a Gauguin, and even enjoy the benefits of a working sewer system in Paris, you owe it to a World Expo there.

EXPLORING PARIS THROUGH ITS WORLD EXPOS

AUTHOR Charles Pappas

DESIGN doublebill.design EXPECTED April 2025

In his magnum opus of 1825, “The Physiology of Taste,” Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin astutely proclaimed, “The destiny of nations depends on the manner in which they feed themselves.” It took nearly three-quarters of a century to grasp the profound implications of this gastronomic wisdom. It did not come with the speed of a Domino’s delivery. The turning point came during the extraordinary Banquet of Mayors (Banquet des Maires) held in the Tuileries Gardens as part of the Exposition Universelle of 1900 in Paris that year.

A kind of grassy muse for Claude Monet, Édouard Manet, and even Pablo Picasso, the Tuileries can feel as wide open as an empty football field at times. Located between Place de la Concorde and the Louvre Museum, it is where strolling Parisians and tourists alike can promenade on a wide open and manicured plain, as if they had magically stepped into Seurat’s masterpiece, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. All that’s missing is the monkey and the parasols. Taking their name from the tile factories which stood on the site where Queen Catherine de Medici built

THIS PHOTOGRAPHIC OVERVIEW OF THE BEAUTIFULLY WILD GARDENS BY THE BELGIUM-BASED ‘GREEN GUERRILLEROS’

BART & PIETER WILL INSPIRE GARDENERS EVERYWHERE

TO LET NATURE TAKE THE LEAD

WILD HARMONY

A garden designer, or landscape architect, is a term that has gradually come to define our work since we began creating gardens nearly thirty years ago. This evolution reflects not only our growing experience and deeper (plant) knowledge but also the changing conditions in which gardens thrive, including the impact of climate change. We see addressing these challenges as a responsibility: sustainable design is more than a buzzword; it has become our guiding principle.

Over the past ten years, we have found our own style. This period marks an evolution in our projects, which have increasingly been infused with sustainability and aesthetic simplicity. Our approach always begins with a deep respect for the environment and evolves into a design where natural materials and biodiversity take center stage. Our rooftop and urban gardens demonstrate that with limited resources—both in terms of space and budget—you can create an oasis, often with unexpected ecological benefits such as bird nesting sites or cooling shade for the city.

Our work reflects a growing commitment to ecologically responsible choices: gravel instead of tropical hardwood, reusing materials, and promoting biodiversity. Sustainability and climate resilience are essential, exemplified by the choice of drought-resistant plants. Our experience with

Green is the new black according to Belgium-based garden architects Bart Haverkamp and Pieter Croes. It’s been more than 30 years now since they turned their love for nature into a business. During this time, they’ve completed countless and diverse garden projects, built up an enormous amount of experience and expanded their knowledge. Their method and philosophy evolved accordingly, resulting into their sought-after signature style. Their gardens – many of them on small plots, terraces or rooftops in the city – are anything but clean and fixed: rough outlines and plant selections are made beforehand, but they trust their intuition to make spontaneous decisions on the spot.

In this carefully curated and thoughtfully designed photo book, Bart and Pieter reflect on their work. Their aim is to share their vision and experience and to inspire all gardeners by showing how much is possible when you’re willing to let nature take its course. In this book, Bart and Pieter put their philosophy into words, as an introduction to 20 extensive and inspiring photo reports of their favourite or most important garden projects so far. The third part of the book holds short descriptions of these projects and useful advice on, for example, how to make your garden heat-resistant.

THE ULTIMATE AND ORIGINAL BOSTON GUIDE FOR VISITORS AND LOCALS, WITH 500 PLACES TO VISIT AND THINGS TO DO, INCLUDING TWO CITY WALKS

This Boston guide is the newest addition to the internationally successful series The 500 Hidden Secrets. Like the other city guides in the series, it contains 500 places to visit or things to know. All of them are addresses or activities the author, savvy Boston local Natalia Ivanytsky, would recommend to friends visiting her hometown. A new feature are the two city walks included in the book, leading past a selection of the 500 secrets: a great way for first-time visitors to get to know the city.

This bulky selection of Boston tips is based only on the author’s personal opinions after thorough research: Natalia wandered through the many Boston streets and neighbourhoods accompanied by her dog, and/or family and friends, looking for the best brunch spots, cocktail bars, and restaurants. She selected the 5 best on-the-go sandwiches, the 5 tastiest street food trucks, the nicest shops for new England inspired home décor or 5 urban oasis garden escapes. She also tells you which unofficial stops along the Freedom Trail are worthwhile, or where to find cool outdoor art installations. Her aim is to showcase Boston’s strong culture beyond sports and history, and to help you discover new, unexplored places.

AND TWO THEMED CITY WALKS

In this brand new and thoroughly revised edition of the bestselling London city guide author Tom Greig not only shares a lot of new secrets, he also included two out-of-the-box city walks: an ideal way to explore a part of the city in a day. Many of the new addresses in this guide are in East-London, an area Tom has explored more intensely since the first publication of The 500 Hidden Secrets of London in 2017.

Of course the best hidden secrets in the rest of the city are still included as well, such as the bakery on Brick Lane that’s open 24-hours and that’s famous for its salt-beef bagels, the only modernist house open to the public, the historic church where you can hear avant-garde electronic music, or the art deco car park that hosts art installations and fashion shows. The book contains 500 places and details that few people know, making it the perfect guide for visitors who want to avoid the usual tourist spots and for residents who are keen to track down the city’s best-kept secrets. THE NEW AND THOROUGHLY

A new, thoroughly revised and expanded edition of the beloved Scotland guide by local Lauren MacCallum. Because she is so passionate about exploring new places, Lauren always has a list of new secrets ready to share. The new entries in this book include her favourite and recently discovered spots in Orkney Islands and the far north of the Highlands, like the coolest places along the North Coast 500. She also added, for example, the best activities in every season in her home area of Cairngorms.

This book isn’t your typical Scottish travel guide; instead, it aims to encourage you to define your own sense of adventure, to explore beyond the usual hotspots and get to know the real Scotland. It will help you to see beyond the tartan trinkets, Irn-Bru and haggis, and to experience the authentic life in Scotland, so you’ll understand what’s so unique about this small stretch of land and its inhabitants. The book covers an eclectic range of over 60 themes such as: unusual art spaces; gin and whisky distilleries worth a visit; amazing coastal walks; dramatic lochs and bookshops with character.

MONOGRAPH IN OCCASION OF PETER MORRENS’ RETROSPECTIVE IN M LEUVEN , IN WHICH PAINTINGS, DRAWINGS, INSTALLATIONS, OBJECTS AND VIDEO CONVERGE

AUTHOR Peter Morrens

DESIGN Atelier Sven Beirnaert

EXPECTED December 2024

Peter Morrens’ practice unites language, sound and image in a wide range of media: from paintings and drawings to photographs, installations and performances. With disruptive humour and poignant images, the artist questions the things around him. Morrens works intuitively and associatively. He uses coincidence, doubt and unexpected links to shape his oeuvre, or rather his o eeeeeeuuuuvre. For it is an unruly whole, doubting, expanding and reinventing itself regularly.

This monograph, published on the occasion of Peter Morrens’ retrospective at M Leuven, offers insight into this diverse artistic practice that spans more than 35 years. Richly illustrated, the book collects existing and new work, room views and archive material. A conversation between curator Eva Wittocx and the artist and an essay by Ronald Van de Sompel are complemented by poems by Lieke Marsman and Hans Magnus Enzensberger. This way images, poetry and texts merge, as in Morrens’ oeuvre, into an organic whole.
