For decades, Lutheran Hour Ministries has proclaimed the Gospel to the world through a unique ministry model that identifies and equips local laypeople to build their presence and impact using strategies and tactics contextual to the culture and language in which they serve. But with billions of people today still not having heard the saving message of Jesus Christ, our mission is more urgent than ever.

As we go into the future, it is exciting to see how God is blessing us. Individuals worldwide currently experience the Gospel more than 195 million times each week through LHM’s efforts. But we know that God wants that to grow much further.

This is why we are embarking on a bold globalization initiative over the next five years that will allow us to exponentially expand our ministry work into places that we have not yet had an opportunity to explore. Building upon our successful model of hiring local staff, we launched an innovative approach to global expansion this year called the International Internship Program. This program uplifts the next generation of Christian leaders to do ministry in their local context, in their native language, in a very specific way. This will lead to us hiring and equipping intern teams for ministry in 12 new areas over a threeyear period.

Earlier this year, we identified four hub locations from among existing ministry

centers to serve as training centers. We provided them with a toolbox of philosophical and educational support that will help them equip an initial four intern teams of three individuals each to be as successful as possible when they begin ministry in their home countries of Peru, Nepal, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kyrgyzstan.

Our globalization efforts also allow us to increase our focus on North America as a mission field, reaching the next generation here at home with the hopeful message of the Gospel.

A Year in Review

HOW LHM’S GOSPEL IMPACT GREW IN 2023

Following are some ways in which LHM was abundantly blessed by God during the last year thanks to your generous support.

Impacting People GLOBALLY

LHM’s culturally-relevant programs share the Gospel with people worldwide more than 195 million times each week. The new International Internship Program will expand global ministry more exponentially by uplifting the next generation of Christian leaders to do ministry in their local context, in their native language, in a very specific way. Working through four existing ministry centers, intern teams with three individuals each are being trained to start ministry in Peru, Nepal, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kyrgyzstan.

To help people rebuild their lives following earthquakes in southern Turkey and northern Syria, LHM partnered with Lutheran Church Charities to bring emergency assistance to those in the region along with messages of comfort and hope found in Jesus Christ. Through the generous donations from supporters of both organizations, around 4,000 people per month have received basic necessities through this holistic outreach effort that reaches people with the hopeful message of the Gospel.

LHM continues to partner with SAT-7 and PAK7 to produce satellite television programming that shines the light of Christ into dozens of countries throughout the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia. Many viewers watching these broadcasts hear about Christ for the first time or have incorrect knowledge about Christianity.

During the 2023 LWML Convention, LHM received two $100,000 mission grants for the 2023-2025 biennium. The funds will help LHM

share Christ with women and children in Central Asia and expand Gospel outreach to Hispanics in the United States.

In Paraguay, a staff member who is a trained psychologist and educator leads our Project JOEL youth program across 14 schools, ensuring students in both public and private settings can express their faith. Alongside her team, she integrates various field programs into the Paraguayan cultural calendar, leveraging national celebrations and special occasions to resonate the Gospel’s message with the youth.

LHM’s successful prison ministry programs have restarted following the pandemic in many countries throughout Africa to bring hope to inmates who often do not receive speedy trials and encounter harsh conditions. These efforts have been recognized and appreciated by governments and prison officials alike, and LHM staff in Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, and Madagascar have permits that allow entry to national prisons.

LHM–Myanmar staff and volunteers joined the Christian Music Fellowship group in a holistic spiritual support program for Internally Displaced People (IDP) who have been affected by war. The program shared God’s love through personal testimonies, Gospel songs, puppet shows, psychological support, games, and gifts of basic necessities. Attendees said this was the first time they have experienced generosity of this kind in an IDP camp, and they felt refreshed in their minds and spirits. u

Impacting People Through DIGITAL ENGAGEMENT

More than 35,000 elementary and middle school students participated in this year’s Gospel Adventures™: Celebrate India program. This free resource is available to Christian schools, homeschools, churches, and individuals for use throughout the year. The five days of curriculum are filled with fun activities, videos, and an interactive website for students to learn about the featured country’s foods, animals, people, and places while also being introduced to kids just like them living in India who carry their faith with them through day-to-day life.

A new audio program, the Gospel Adventures Show, provides fun, engaging, and meaningful content for parents and their young children by focusing on a Gospel theme and Bible verse and using stories, songs, games, and activities to share the love of Jesus. Initially released as a podcast, which averages nearly 700 downloads per week, the program now airs on more than 50 radio stations across the United States.

Pioneered and developed in 2017 by LHM staff throughout the Latin America region, Vivenciar.net is a bilingual platform that reaches Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking individuals. More than 1.7 million visitors to the website from 85 countries have explored a diverse range of content covering 28 topics. The platform has also facilitated meaningful interactions with 8,300 individuals who started an ongoing conversation with ministry volunteers in Latin America and the United States.

In Arabic-speaking regions of the world, LHM’s social media pages continue to reach millions and engage thousands of people monthly. One of our main pages recently surpassed one million unique followers.

The rebranded website and social media channels for our digital platform, Thred™, are now live. Thred’s upgraded content consists of blogs, courses, short videos, reels, stories, and other posts to fulfill its mission of inspiring and equipping every Christian to share their faith through winsome digital interactions that lead to meaningful spiritual conversations.

The Lutheran Hour entered its 91st broadcast season proclaiming the Gospel on more than 1,800 traditional radio stations throughout North America. The weekly broadcast is also available online, through an app, as a podcast, and on platforms such as Amazon Alexa, iHeartRadio, Spotify, and Sirius XM satellite radio. Special programming was also produced this year for Easter and Christmas. For Holy Thursday and Good Friday, two halfhour specials featured multi-voice character portrayals, re-enacting the tragic events of Jesus’ betrayal, death, and resurrection as recorded in Matthew 26-28. For Christmas, Empty Boxes presented an original story inviting listeners on a chilly car-ride home after a candlelight Christmas Eve service that became a turning point for a teenage boy— an enlightening moment he will return to for years to come. The programs were available online and aired on select radio stations. u

Impacting People RIGHT WHERE THEY ARE

In 2018, LHM embarked in a partnership with Barna Group—an industry leader for research-based insights about faith and culture, leadership and vocation, and generational groups—for a critical study of faith in America. The latest research topic led to this year’s rollout of the Gifted for More Church Campaign. This fully digital kit includes a small group Bible study, sermon series outlines and slides, Path to Purpose curriculum, research materials (monograph, presentation, and slide deck), promotional assets, access to the EveryGift™ Inventory, and more.

As a complement to the Gifted for More resources, three new online mini courses through LHM Learn were unveiled in connection with this research topic. Each mini course looks at key areas of the research, digs into Scripture connected to that area, and highlights an interview with experts to further the learning.

Various aspects of the research findings and their application served as the foundation for presentations given by LHM staff at events across the United States in 2023. The annual Best Practices for Ministry Conference has been a terrific opportunity for church workers to come together and share conversation, learn best practices in ministry, and return home with innovative ideas. In addition to sharing ministry resources through our booth, LHM staff hosted three sessions: “Leading Your Church to Love Where They Live (Empowering Your Congregation to Impact their

Neighborhoods);” “No Comprendo! – You Can Reach Your Hispanic Neighbors;” and “Your Church and the Digital World: Equipping People to Live Out Their Faith Online.”

Missouri Good Neighbor Week 2022 was recognized as the Best Neighborhood Program of the Year during this year’s Neighborhoods USA conference. Missouri Good Neighbor Week started as a project of the University of Missouri Extension Engaged Neighbor Program, and The Hopeful Neighborhood Project™ (HNP) from LHM joined as a partner last year to take it from a county level to an award-winning state-wide program. HNP was a sponsor of this year’s conference and had staff members present to the 625 attendees from 34 states during the opening session, as well as during three workshops and a project lab.

This year’s National Good Neighbor Day provided HNP with great opportunities to build organizational partnerships and expand its reach. This year’s celebration included 1,145 libraries downloading a free digital kit to promote this special day in their communities; more than 19,000 acts of neighboring logged during Missouri Good Neighbor Week; people from more than 1,150 unique ZIP codes participating in some way; and 10,000 Neighborhood Activity Books (including pages produced by HNP) being given to children in Springfield, Missouri, during a variety of community-focused events. u

How Your Gifts HELPED LHM IMPACT LIVES WITH THE GOSPEL IN 2023

With billions of people still not having heard the saving message of Christ, Lutheran Hour Ministries’ mission to share the Good News with a hurting world is more urgent than ever. The following are some ways that your gifts helped LHM share hope during the past year.

AFRICA and THE MIDDLE EAST

People throughout the Middle East and North Africa constantly search for hope and peace for their lives that are often filled with emptiness. Over the past several years, LHM has partnered with SAT-7 to produce satellite TV programming that shines the light of Christ into dozens of countries throughout the region.

Many viewers reach out through social media following the broadcasts seeking more information about what they heard and how it can provide comfort and hope for their lives. “I learned more about God’s love and how it can fill every need and void I have,” shared one viewer of the New Light program. “God’s Word is truly real, and the first steps are prayer and getting close to God. Thank you for talking this through with me. I am now seeing change in my life.” u

Bible Correspondence Courses (BCC) are LHM–Ethiopia’s most popular program. The courses introduce the Gospel to people who do not know Jesus, and reinforce a biblical understanding for people who are growing in their faith. When someone responds following an outreach activity like film screenings, rural rallies, and musical performances, LHM staff members invite the respondent to begin a BCC as the next step in his or her spiritual journey. To date, around 200,000 Ethiopians have enrolled in these BCCs.

“This BCC strengthened my relationship with Jesus Christ, and I am grateful for this experience. When I read the course materials, I came to a better understanding of faith,” says a BCC graduate named Dawit.

Another participant, Genet, says, “I now read my Bible every day due to what I learned through

this teaching. The courses also challenged me to change my understanding about life and encouraged me to be strong and engaged in the ministry.” u

Serge and his wife are members of a Lutheran church, and together they started a private school. They contacted LHM–Madagascar staff after hearing one of the ministry’s radio programs and requested to use LHM’s Bible Correspondence Courses as lessons at their school. Many teachers and students completed their lessons and were awarded certificates. The couple also began hosting the ministry’s film showings at the school. Serge visits the LHM office regularly to get more materials to share with students. “My wife and I are happy that we can give students a clear understanding of God’s will by learning His Word,” says Serge. u

In Uganda, LHM staff use films in urban areas to share God’s Word with large groups of people in places where they tend to congregate. At one of these events, staff met Babirye, a woman whose life had been filled with hurt and disappointment. She faced tremendous loss and betrayal as a young woman before finding happiness in marriage. Then her husband was gravely injured in a motorcycle accident, leaving him unemployed with substantial bills. As the family’s new breadwinner, Babirye lost confidence and hope in her future. She was moved by the film’s message and credited it with inspiring her and “bringing hope back in my life that I had lost.” She had backslid in faith during her family’s struggles, but is now inspired to return to church after hearing the hopeful message of the Gospel. u

ASIA

Wannada is nine years old and has been raised in a non-Christian religious household. Her parents have faced many trials in their lives and have been searching for a happier life. LHM–Thailand hosted a Christmas outreach program at Wannada’s school, and she participated in the activities and sang the songs. She learned about Jesus and the true meaning of Christmas for the first time and wanted to learn more. LHM–Thailand staff followed up with her family and referred them to a local church. They started attending services and are learning more about Christianity. Wannada also enrolled in the children’s Bible Correspondence Course hosted by LHM–Thailand and was eager to attend more church activities. u

Hyun is a social worker who, through the power of the Holy Spirit, became a Christian in college. She remembers hearing LHM–South Korea radio programs when she was a child. Now she appreciates the ministry’s text message program and YouTube channel in addition to the radio programs. One of the recent devotions touched her so much that she sent the LHM staff a note to say thank you. She is thankful for the high-quality materials that the staff works hard to produce. Hyun is using the LHM–South Korea materials to grow in her faith and share the Gospel message with those around her. u

Durairaj is 45 years old and has two daughters. He works in a small shop and does not make enough money to support his family. He comes from a non-Christian religious background and initially connected with LHM–India staff through their topical booklet program. His

circumstances had led him to consider ending his life when he came across LHM–India’s booklet about support. He was comforted by the message and wanted to learn more about Jesus. Durairaj continued to read additional LHM–India materials and, through the power of God’s Word, he became a Christian. He is now comforted by the Gospel message and has a more hopeful outlook in his life. u

The LHM staff in Southeast Asia hosted a holistic haircut event in conjunction with a live Christian music performance held in partnership with a local congregation. The 120 attendees were given LHM booklets while they were waiting to get their haircut. More importantly, key people from the church took the opportunity to share the Gospel with those who wanted to know more about Jesus and His love. An elderly woman heard the Good News for the first time at the event, and returned to the church several weeks later to ask the senior pastor to pray for her. She had been touched by the Holy Spirit, confessed her sins, and expressed her desire to follow Jesus. “I truly see Jesus’ love through your good deeds,” she said. “That is why I am here with my grandchildren. Please pray for us and help us to know more about the God you and your church members shared at the event.” u

Karia is a college student who loves to sing. She participated in a Gospel singing competition hosted by LHM–Laos and made it to the top five. She joined the ministry’s singing team and is growing in her faith by serving local churches. Karia volunteers for the evangelism group at her school and is thankful for the opportunity to share the Gospel through her voice. u

CENTRAL and SOUTH AMERICA

Omar from Bogotá, Colombia, was suicidal when he came across LHM’s Para el Camino website and reached out to LHM staff on Facebook Messenger. He made text contact with Beatriz Hoppe, coordinator for Hispanic ministry at LHM. The rest is about networks and relationships.

Hoppe contacted Pastor Fester from LHM–Argentina. He coordinates volunteers through Vivenciar.net, a digital platform offering relevant topical content for Portuguese- and Spanishspeaking individuals. Fester contacted Julyssa, a counselor with LHM–Mexico. She called Omar for more information and crisis management. Fester then called Pastor Marín in Medellín, who connected with a colleague in Bogotá who—per Julyssa’s recommendations—located Omar and got him help at a medical clinic.

Once on the ground with Omar, this distraught man was encouraged to receive the care he needed. He is now regaining his physical and emotional health and has found employment. He passed this note on to those who helped him: “Thanks to God and to you. This is what I can now do with great love.”

Omar’s case highlights the global, yet personal way one-on-one ministry is happening through LHM’s ministry efforts. u

LHM–Guatemala celebrated its 30th anniversary with a full weekend of activities, including a special Project JOEL field program for more than 425 junior high students as well as school officials and teachers.

Rebeca, the ministry center director, was walking among the kids during the program when she noticed a sad girl looking down with her hair

covering her face. Rebeca asked, “Are you okay?” The young girl, Maria, replied, “No,” with tears in her eyes and running down her cheeks. Rebeca said to her, “Whatever is happening in your life, I want you to know that you can talk to God and ask Him to help you. He will do it because He keeps His promises. He has done it for me, and He will do it for you, too.”

Following the event, Maria and a friend began ongoing conversations with members of the LHM team and have learned how God provides hope and comfort for their lives. u

Enzo attended a presentation hosted by LHM–Paraguay at his daughter’s school titled “Mission and Challenges of the Family in Our Time,” which highlighted factors that hinder communication and harmony within the home. After the talk, each participant received an LHM brochure titled, The Family

Following the event, Enzo shared with LHM staff the challenges his family has faced. He has raised four daughters after his wife died of cancer and worries about providing them with the best of things while protecting and preparing them for the future. He thanked the staff for offering solutions to several of his worries. “How good it is to hear advice and find support for my concerns,” says Enzo.

After a few days, Enzo wrote a letter thanking the staff for listening to him and giving him the brochure. He said that he spoke with his children about the booklet’s teachings, and they were working together to find ways to solve their problems. He also appreciated everything being presented from a Christian perspective and asked to be connected with a local congregation to grow in his faith. u

EUROPE and CENTRAL ASIA

As part of its holistic response to devastating earthquakes in southern Turkey, LHM staff from the region began visiting the areas most affected and building relationships with families and individuals who had been impacted. This response allows the ministry to not only provide basic necessities like drinking water, food, diapers, hygiene products, clothes, and blankets to address the physical needs of individuals, but support for their spiritual needs as well. Often the recipients of holistic efforts like this desire to learn more about the God who motivates these Christians to reach out in love.

Staff members met a man named Alparslan outside his tent in a park near several destroyed buildings. Alparslan lost his wife and home to the earthquake and was feeling ashamed about being in such dire need of assistance. He shared that he had lost all hope and was in tears to receive LHM’s emergency relief supplies. LHM staff members continue to build a relationship with him through WhatsApp and know that God is working in his heart. u

Egor is 38 years old and enrolled in the Bible Correspondence Courses (BCC) offered by LHM–Russia while he was in prison. He shared that he was born in a non-Christian household and his family members never talked about God. He had questions during his childhood about life but never had answers. Now that he is learning about Jesus, he has gotten answers to his questions. Through the power of God’s Word, Egor became a Christian. He has confessed his faith in front of his cellmates and continues to grow in his faith. u

Manargul is 33 years old and was without work. Her husband works whatever jobs he can find to provide for the family. She met LHM–Mongolia staff when they were distributing audio Bibles and printed Christian materials in her area. Manargul started talking with the staff members, and they invited her to go to church and attend a women’s listener meeting hosted by LHM. She visited the church a few times but did not start attending services regularly. Every month, LHM–Mongolia staff members went to her house and prayed with her. She eventually started a new job, and her outlook on life has become more positive. Manargul shared her audio Bible with her husband, and they continue to learn about Jesus together. u

In 2018, LHM initiated a support partnership with the SAT-7 PARS channel to sponsor a live children’s television program, Golpand (meaning “hope” or “Golden Advice”). The program focuses on children ages 5-13 and teaches morals and values to viewers through games, educational videos, and dramas.

“Golpand is an excellent program that teaches me so much every week,” says a young girl named Roshanak. “We talk about the miracles of Jesus, the things He said, and the importance of love and respect. I have loved all the program’s topics, but especially how, as followers of Jesus, we must always share with our friends His message of hope.”

LHM’s partnership with SAT-7 PARS has grown to now include support of three additional programs for Persian-speaking individuals. These programs are available on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, and the SAT-7 PARS website. u

UNITED STATES

Members of King of Kings, a large congregation in Omaha, Nebraska, shared with their lead pastor (Greg Griffith) that they want to tell friends about Jesus, but they do not know where to start. Griffith has used LHM resources for around 15 years and immediately thought of LHM’s partnership with Barna Group.

As he began looking at the resources developed through this partnership, the Spiritual Conversation Curve Cards stood out because they are clear and simple to understand. “Our members are able to share the Gospel with people around them through everyday conversations, and the cards empower them,” says Griffith. “People can share the Gospel in a way that feels authentic to them. Our members like that there is a clear goal for them.” u

Students at Immanuel Lutheran School in Loveland, Colorado, participated in Gospel Adventures: Celebrate India. “Students really enjoyed playing the number-counting games and watching the videos to ‘meet’ kids from another country,” says Elizabeth Grimm, a fourth- and fifth-grade teacher at the school. “The curriculum really provides an element of perspective as we talk about faith and blessings. Gospel Adventures is a wonderful springboard for cross-cultural connections, great conversations, and writing activities.” u

When Donna was growing up in the 1960s, she remembers sitting on her father’s lap and listening to Dr. Oswald Hoffmann preach during The Lutheran Hour broadcasts on the radio. At the start of the pandemic when Donna and her husband could not attend church services in person, they started listening to The Lutheran Hour again. Now they listen every Sunday before going to church. She says she also loves the app where she can hear

archived messages of the program. “Every Speaker through the years has been awesome, and their powerful and inspirational messages have had a tremendous impact on my spiritual life during difficult times,” she says. “We praise God for your continued outreach into all the world.” u

Gene Mackey, a former zone president in the Nebraska district of the Lutheran Laymen’s League (LLL), was friends with the head of Sapp Brothers Petroleum. Together, they came up with the idea of placing LHM’s Project Connect topical booklet displays in Sapp’s truck stops across the state. Other LLL members have stepped up to make sure the project continues.

Dennis and Imogene Wacker travel 80 miles every two months to restock displays in Odessa with a variety of booklets. They have found the children’s booklets as well as ones on PTSD, depression, cancer, grief, parenting, and gambling are extremely popular. They also try to include the booklets, Who Is Jesus?, What Is Faith in Jesus?, and Why Did Jesus Die?

Dennis and Imogene learned about the Thrivent Action Teams program to help maximize their efforts. “The Thrivent grants of $250 each make this a very ‘doable’ project,” says Dennis. “We have encouraged others in the district to use these grants to help get these booklets in front of even more people.”

“Sapp’s management is incredibly supportive of this project and places the rack in a high-traffic entryway,” says Imogene. “Several employees have commented about the booklets’ popularity among customers and say they become concerned when the rack starts to get empty.” u
