FOREWORD It is very difficult to summarise the impact the pandemic has had in the past 18 months. No one could have anticipated a nation in lockdown and no doubt, the covid pandemic has been a game changer for society affecting every individual and organisation in different ways. For our charity, it tested our resilience and ability to adapt our delivery on many fronts. Many face to face activities and projects were suspended, while new online ways of delivery were quickly put in place. Our staff proved incredibly versatile embracing different ways of delivering projects online, to maintain contact with as many participants as possible. Our Tackling Loneliness Together project, in particular, focused on supporting those isolating for many, many months with phone calls, emails and 'garden gate' chats while taking on the Council's click and deliver library book service which resulted in 5,000 library books delivered in Luton. As we head into a post pandemic future, our new strategy 'Reconnecting Communities' 2021-2024' outlines how we will recover and how we are going to help people to overcome social challenges over the next four years and beyond. The diverse nature of our work often brings us into contact with those on the edge of society or those who are disengaged, lonely, live in poverty or live with a disability. The pandemic will unquestionably have accentuated social divides and widened inequality. In the meantime, this impact report represents a snapshot of the last 18 months and focuses on strategic projects that demonstrate core areas of our work in Sport & Health, Education and Inclusion. And as difficult as the last 18 months have been our new strategy, detailed on pages 23 – 24, will ensure our mission to change lives through football will ensure we continue to make a difference to all individuals, groups and communities who come into contact with the Trust.

“Luton Town FC Community Trust delivered library books to me for several months, including over the lockdown period. During this time, I wasn't leaving the house at all. I have mobility issues anyway and was shielding from Covid, so was confined to the house. One of my daughter's lives up north and the other works at Luton and Dunstable Hospital, so I wasn't even seeing family very often. It was a real lift to have regular visits from the friendly, enthusiastic staff. I enjoy my books but having that regular face to face contact with someone was even more valuable to me. As a Luton fan myself, I really enjoyed having someone to talk to about the football. It really was a fantastic service.”

PREMIER LEAGUE KICKS PL KICKs is part of a nationwide project funded by the Premier league and uses the power of football to connect with young people in some of the most highneed areas of Luton and Bedford. Our youth outreach programme began five years ago, with the aim to create safer, stronger and more respectful communities through the development of young people’s potential, whilst providing access to local facilities, coaching and mentoring. Starting with just 1 weekly centre in Luton the project has now grown to 5 weekly centres across Luton and in Bedford attended by over 300 participants each week. PL KICKS centres use football as a hook to engage and target young boys and girl aged 11 to 21 and attempts to divert

We partner with Bedfordshire Police and Luton Youth Offending Services at all of our centres in trying to create cohesive groups of young people and our intra estate tournaments are designed to bring young people together under the banner of the Club’s badge in a way that demonstrates the unique power of football to unite different communities in a way no other activity can.

LUTON STREET LEAGUE The Luton Street League project falls within the Council’s Community Local Led Development (CLLD) strategy that sets out a vision and action plan centred around six strategic objectives that all address in one way or another the many barriers to employment that certain sections of the Town’s population face as well as focusing on the importance of community cohesion in raising the outside perception of Luton to employers and potential visitors. It's a joint project between the Hatters Trust, East Cricket and Luton Basketball that seeks to use sport to improve community cohesion and life chances for young people in Luton. The overall project involves investment from both

the Trust, and the European Union through the European Social Fund with Luton Council acting as project managers. Luton Street League seeks to promote sport in deprived areas with unemployment and anti-social behaviour challenges where lots of students underachieve at school or college and now find the jobs market more challenging than ever. The project operates ten centres across Luton that offer free weekly Football, Cricket, Basketball with all centres offer employment training and skills workshops to help participants either improve their current employability opportunities or future training opportunities and employment chances.

Robyn has been attending Luton Street League sessions for almost three years during which time she gained a nationally recognised sports coaching qualification and now coaches part-time for the Trust, she commented: “Luton Street League has given me the opportunity to play with new friends and also qualify as a coach and with the Club’s support I am now working part-time on the programme coaching younger participants. I love coaching, it’s something I’m passionate about and I want to make a career of it – Coaching for Luton Town is like a dream for me!”

The programme aims to show participants ' how to eat better, be more active and importantly stay that way long term to achieve long-term improvements in weight loss, physical activity, diet and general wellbeing. During the 12 weeks our staff support participants to improve

eating habits by reducing portion sizes and swapping fatty and sugary foods for fruit, vegetables and high fibre foods and also to achieve at least 45 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most days of the week – so each week participants receive an exercise session at the Club and follow a personal pedometer based walking programme to encourage everyone to try and fit this into their daily routine.

During lockdown our delivery moved online and became even more relevant with reduced activity nationwide and so the tried and tested behaviour change techniques to help participants become more active and improve diets included monitoring weight and pedometer step counts and agreeing SMART individual goals so that gains could be maintained longer term. Despite Covid we achieved three full cohorts in the last 18 months and recorded some great individual success stories.

FIT HATTERS is our flagship free health programme for men and women aged 35-65 and is supported by the EFL Trust and funding from Sport England. The main aims of the programme are to improve eating habits, cut down on alcohol and increase activity levels while reducing weight and waistlines. The 12 week programme is part of a national programme of FIT FANS at other EFL Clubs who use their stadiums to deliver weekly 45 minute workshops looking at diet and lifestyle and 45 minutes of activity sessions all designed to create long term behaviour change helping more ‘inactive’ people over 35 to become ‘active’.

CHARITABLE STAFF PROJECTS Luton Foodbank 100Km Challenge: On Saturday 25th April 2020, all of our staff, ran, jogged or walked as far as they could within 45 minutes, which was the maximum amount of time the government allowed during lockdown restrictions at this time. Together we exceeded our target of 100Km as we covered 140Km and raised £1,500. The fundraiser was in response to the pandemic and subsequent job losses in the community for those who were self-employed or on zero hours contracts - many of these individuals weren’t covered by the furlough job retention scheme and could not support themselves or their families through no fault of their own. Read more about this in issue 13 of our newsletter. ‘Walking on Water’ Dover to Calais (27 miles in five days) Keech Hospice Fundraiser: In June 2020 we partnered with Keech Hospice to cover the same distance on foot as the width of the English Channel within five days. By the end of the challenge we raised £450 and all of our staff managed to clear 1 million steps (smashing the required 50,000 steps). This challenge was set up to help Keech Hospice Children’s services who support families across Beds, Herts and Milton Keynes who have children with life-limiting conditions. Staff join the Level Trust to tackle School Uniform Poverty in Luton: In August to September of 2020 our staff were on secondment to local charity, Level Trust, to help with their uniform exchange project. The Level Trust were left short-staffed during one of their

busiest times of the year, so our staff stepped in to help with the delivery of free uniforms across Luton to low income families. The cost of buying new school uniform can really add up, the Uniform exchange is a vital way for families to save money and make sure that their children have the correct uniform for the start of the year. Recycling uniforms also reduces landfill waste so it’s good for the environment too! You can read more about this project in issue 14 of our Newsletter.

Happy Harry donated 400 books to primary school children provided by the National Literacy Trust: On the run up to World Book day in 2021, Happy Harry delivered ‘20 Fantastic Football Stories’ to local primary school children to bring about a passion for reading and establish a regular habit of reading in their own time. Research from NLT found that 3 out of 10 young people read daily, but they also found that half of children they surveyed enjoyed reading but found it “pushed out” in favour of other activities. Read more about the project in our 16th Issue of our newsletter. HATTERS 100K Challenge for the British Heart Foundation’s 60th Birthday: Our staff supported the BHF in March of 2021 to walk, run or cycle 100Km in that month. We had staff who managed to walk over 200Km during the allotted time and we had raised £400 collectively. It was great to support the BHF as they do a lot of work to prevent heart and circulatory diseases and improve the lives of those with existing conditions. Read more on Issue 16 of our newsletter.

PREMIER LEAGUE PRIMARY STARS We deliver high quality PE and school sport programmes which satisfy mainstream curriculum requirements. Premier League Primary Stars is our flagship schools project and seeks to use our brand strength and the appeal of the Premier league to inspire children to learn, be active and develop important life skills. Our coaching staff's core objective is to enhance the knowledge, skills and confidence of both pupils and PE delivery staff to improve practical session delivery and experience of PE and school sport in the school environment that promotes and embeds positive experiences and promotes healthy and active lifestyles for all. YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME The Trust runs a fully integrated youth development structure at the Club providing a pathway to our full-time academy for talented footballers. It starts with players as young as 3 years old who simply 'pay and play' each week at our Mini Hatters centre in Luton and from there, youngsters can progress through to our Skills Performance Centres up to 12 years of age who train on our 7 week coaching programme at our 11 weekly all year round centres. All of these players, together with recruited boys, some from local grassroot clubs and some from our large holiday soccer camp programme, continue their journey for an academy place at our four Development Centres in Luton, Dunstable, Kempston and Arlesey which have over 450 boys who we see long term development potential together with a further 150 boys signed at our Luton Pre-Academy Centre for boys who we feel have potential to make it to the academy in the shorter term. The more advanced centre boys train with the us twice a week and remain with their local club sides while the boys at our

4 Development centres train once a week while remaining with their local clubs. At the same time all of the boys play around 10 games a season for the Club against other professional club youth development systems and also enjoy overseas tours to Holland and Belgium along with residential training camps at Stowe School Nr Buckingham. It is a huge pool of local talent supporting the academy making sure our youth talent identification programme works effectively. Overall success of the programme is ultimately judged on boys progressing successfully into our schoolboy academy and for the third season in a row 3 out of the 6 U16 boys offered scholarships by the club were produced by our development system. A testament to the programmes value. Covid prevented our further expansion into providing pathways for girls however, 2021-2022 season will see an FA Talent Identification Centre opening in Luton alongside 3 girls only Skills Performance Centres.

SOCIAL MEDIA: KEEPING COMMUNITIES CONNECTED Three lockdowns during the pandemic meant switching many of our activities online to ensure community engagement continued with as little disruption as possible for as many participants as possible – apart from actual PE and football which sadly was suspended for several months. At each stage of each lockdown, we adapted programmes to allow those socially isolated or to comply with prevailing social distancing rules. In many cases we designed new programmes specifically for online delivery only and this dramatically increased our social media profile. Our Get Up Get Fit online fitness challenge funded through the Offices of The Police Crime Commissioner, provided exercise routines for boys and girls in the 14+ age group which we broadcast live every day at 10.00 am across our social media platforms. Each daily exercise focused on different parts of the body and the whole programme promoted the benefits of daily exercise – particularly in terms of improving mood (mental health) as well as overall fitness (physical health) with an emphasis on maintaining regular routines for young people, so they are ready to join in regular activities once they resumed again at school, college, or work.

and those sessions built up over three months as fitness levels and flexibility levels improved and these sessions were supplemented with a 5 week challenge devised by James Hatch our 'Fit Hatter' Fitness Instructor which steps up the exercise routine for those who are already fairly active. For our younger footballers we set daily challenges when there was no football and our Hatters at Home skills challenges proved very popular with lots of videos sent in to our social media platforms. Our DCMS funded project Tackling Loneliness Together targeted local residents who were experiencing loneliness as a result of having to selfisolate or stay at home and Hatter Chatter, our weekly zoom discussion group where we discuss all things Luton Town hosted by Paul Stephens from the Luton Town FC Supporters Trust and Roger Wash, Club Historian and this featured regular appearances from the first team – a massive boost for those supporters missing their football. Hatter Chatter led to an online Hatters Fun Football Quiz every week as well as our Hatters Inter-Care Home Quiz League will bringing together care homes and sheltered housing settings from across Luton for a weekly quiz league.

Our Fit Hatters programme also moved online with twice weekly exercise routines from the EFL Trust for participants who were looking to start a fitness routine

PARK STREET PROJECT Our Park Street project is a targeted intervention programme funded through the Office of the Police Crime Commissioner specifically aimed at addressing anti-social behaviour in Park Town and South London surrounds. The area has little facilities for youth activities and a growing gang and youth gang problem.

“Bringing boys together from areas that are known for antisocial behaviour around gang and knife crime through our regular workshops and engagement helps decrease the reported instances around said areas, because when they do not see each other as a threat in town or out with friends its a case of we know him from Kicks rather than he’s from that area or postcode. We work closely with the team at Luton Town Community Trust who allow us to educate and engage directly with these young people in the evenings which has definitely changed many of their attitudes towards us as police officers.” KARANJIT SANGHERA, T/Sergeant 6579
