The New Kid on The Block: Mama Stall’s Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong

N

ot all boutique hotels are created

Not all boutique hotels are created equal and the Hotel Indigo, located at 86E East Coast Road at the heart of Singapore and the Joo Chiat area, effortlessly succeeds where so many others have failed. From the moment one walks through the door, one is charmed. Welcomed by an exotic kaleidoscope of colours, textures, epicurean design and sybaritic artwork that both delights and regales the mind.

The lobby is paved with intricately patterned Peranakan ceramic tiles, a word derived from ‘anak’, meaning child or descendant. Delicately hand-painted water vases, paper lanterns, and standing light sculptures, set against a white wall of exquisitely carved blocks, pay further tribute to the culture whilst allowing for a natural flow of air and light.

To the left is the extended living area on the left, flanked by two watchful dragons, the traditional symbol of power and prosperity. At the center, the hotel’s very own Mama Stall, a traditional wooden trolley that now serves as a chic boutique for local merchandise typically found in the area’s shop houses. The brightly burning flames of its multi-colored paper chandelier, exquisitely hand-woven carpets, brightly upholstered chairs and teak bookshelves further make it a comfortable place to relax.

Moving on to the exterior we see Hotel Indigo boasts an exquisite rooftop terrace and infinity pool lined with fresh lemongrass (that is often used in the local cuisine) that overlooks the rainbow-hued shops and colonial bungalows of Joo Chiat / Katong.

The devil is in the details The devil is in the details as they say, and that is precisely what makes the concept work so well. As part of IHG, the InterContinental Hotels Group, which shares the same the motto, Hotel Indigo is set to become a crowning jewel among the company’s boutique hotels. Think authentic. Think unique. Think refined. All these components become evident in the hotel’s rooms.

Every detail has been minutely planned, ensuring that Hotel Indigo’s guests want for nothing. Indeed, each of its 131 rooms is opulently appointed with spa-inspired wet areas, floating mirrors and dragon carved circular baths and graciously rendered wall murals of a typical day in Peranakan life.

The beds are lined the hand-embroidered pillows and finely woven sheets, the seating area decorated in bold rose and turquoise, a genuine Carrom games table upon which to enjoy the pleasures of the local childhood card game and, as a bonus, one’s own mini Mama Stall that serves as both a museum piece filled with local artefacts and delicious local delicacies like traditional Peranakan sweets meats. Essentially, Hotel Indigo offers its guests entrance into another realm.

Baba Chews

Baba Chews which lies only a short stroll through the extended living area and out to its open terrace along the glass walkway, is also certain to whet the appetite. The restaurant reflects the same careful attention to detail, Peranakan culture and the area’s history and famous cuisine.

Elements from the hotel are also echoed in its decoration to merge the two areas, a factor equally reflected in the menu, with its intriguing mix of modern and classic, such as conventional dishes from Malacca.

The restaurant’s name and location pays tribute to the history of the area. Baba is the title of a male Peranakan descendant and Chew the first name of wealthy Chinese businessmen Chew Joo Chiat, after whom the street is named. Chew is remembered for donating a great deal of the land on the East Coast and in Katong back to the government.

East meets West East meets West at the Hotel Indigo and that is what makes it so exceptional. Not only is one immediately captivated by its beautiful design, lavish accommodation and up-to-date amenities, but its fascinating history as well. A whole new world lies just around the corner and the Hotel Indigo is the perfect place from which to explore its boundaries.

Rooms at the Hotel Indigo start at 224 SGD a night and can be booked directly online at https://m.ihg.com/hotels/hotelindigo/us/en/hoteldetail/sinki.
