Tim & Cindy Dodd Candice Bar: Cindy Dodd and I were talking earlier, but if anyone has read this magazine or followed us online, Luxe Life Magazine is all about showcasing the entrepreneurial journey and story, because every entrepreneur has one and I know you do too. It’s always quite the journey. It's a lot of ups and downs. Interesting moments to figure out, and then spots of fun along the way. Being an entrepreneur, as I always say, is not for the faint of heart. You must have real thick skin. To start off, Tim please tell everyone who you are and what you do. Tim Dodd: Essentially people come to us if they need more customers. We’re really focused on specifically outbound. If you think of ads or SEO or different referrals, that's about 5% of your total addressable market. We do outbound things like cold e-mail, cold calling, cold LinkedIn. We go out into the marketplace which allows you to tap into 100% of your target market. We go out there and get meetings with people, generally high-ticket people, that are selling a more expensive service. We’re talking: $5,000, $50,000, $5 million, and generally they are selling that over the phone; those are the kind of meetings that we get for our clients. We’ll help with the sell-side too to make sure they close them, because leads without close don't really help CB: I know a lot of companies or businesses start off because they see a problem and they can be the solution. What made you think to create this business? Cindy Dodd: Great question. Tim had, I want to say, the brains behind the idea. Essentially how it started was Tim was excellent on the SEO side. He essentially had a company right before this one

where he was doing SEO and when we started PEMA, the focus was really on how do we go out and get clients. There was a massive need in the market. SEO is one thing, just like you said, you might have a great product or service, and maybe you posted on your website and things like that, but it doesn't necessarily mean people are going to come to you. The huge gap in the market was if somebody is either brand new or they have an amazing product or service, how can they go out into the market, get customers, and tell people about what they do. That massive gap in there is really where we stepped into the fold and need. I have a background in coaching as well, so I ran my own coaching company for a few years. That was the biggest bottleneck for me: “How do I get clients? I know that I can coach, I know I'm exceptional at what I do, but how do I get clients? How do I have consistent revenue month over month? How do I get people through the door?” That massive gap in the market is really where PEMA stepped in.

CB: I love asking couples business questions. As someone who years ago had a business with one of my ex-husbands, doing business with your partner can either be super amazing or detrimental to both the business and the relationship. Time divided between both can be difficult. How is working together, and how do you make that work?

LUXE LIFE MAGAZINE 7

Taking Over With Tim & Cindy Dodd TD: First off, I always tell people I do not suggest it During our honeymoon, I could tell that something and here's why. Even though Cindy and I make great was off with Tim's business because he was taking business partners, and a great couple. You have to calls during the honeymoon. He was a little bit think about half the marriages that end up failing, disengaged and just knowing him, knowing the and then you combine that statistic with the fact that personality, I know he just wanted to take care of it's really hard to get business partnerships to align. it and didn't want to bring that in. We come back I think what's the more important question is, do from our honeymoon and Tim pretty much lays you align mission, vision, values on a business side? out that the business was crashing essentially. We Lastly, are your skills complementary? For me I'm had to borrow money from our parents to run ready, fire, aim. I can go out and build the sales team, payroll. We had to rebuild from scratch, we had I like to build things but then I'm not a maintenance employees pretty much sabotaging the business person. Then Cindy is very much operations, she from the inside out. We call that 1.0 version of the was the visionary integrator, so super complimentary. company. She's incredible at marketing, copywriting, and so we kind of got lucky that we didn't just align as a couple, TD: Can I just say something about that? We but also as business partners. I think the biggest thing are probably the most creative Ramen noodle is don't try to force something to work. It's like going chefs on the planet! We were so low financially. into business with family members, often times are We made the most creative ways to make Ramen a really bad idea. I always say it like this, you can noodles taste good because we were at the bottom have a business relationship that's really good and it of the barrel. We had a beautiful wedding, spent can turn into a friendship absolutely. However, it's a bunch of money on the wedding. We went from really hard to get a good friendship to turn into a a beautiful wedding to that. It wasn't like I was good business relationship. Number one is to make hiding anything from her, but from her side it was sure you're aligned and you’re complimentary, and if pretty intense. you're not just be OK with doing business together. CB: Entrepreneurship is full of ups and downs. Let's talk about when you first started the business and even what’s happening now, because there’s always stuff going on. What has been a major challenge that you guys figured out, or got through that was at the time very difficult? CD: We got married January of 2020, right before the pandemic. I had my family flying from Congo, from South Africa, Tim’s family from the Midwest -beautiful wedding, the most incredible time together with our family. At the time we weren’t working together. Tim had his company, I had my coaching company, and we had just married. LUXE LIFE MAGAZINE 8

“You're going to

face more challenges when you have those big wins. What's important is to look back and just make sure you're focusing on the progress; versus the negative stuff you deal with.”

CD: It was intense! It was an intense period. I think you go into a relationship and a marriage with very high hopes. You know this person, you understand what they're doing, all of it. Then to get to that level of a point in our marriage because it's a marriage and a partnership, it was extremely tough. There were so many lessons learned that we pulled from that experience. It just brought us so much closer together that we look at like it had to happen. There was a reason that that happened at the time that it did.

It's not like we don't cross support each other, but we trust each other that if Tim decides on the sales side that he wants to purchase the software, he's got it, he doesn't have to run that by me and the same vice versa. So, yes, we stay in our lanes, but we trust that the other person has what they're supposed to be doing and has my back too. CB: Very good point. Who's the boss here?

TD: We have been given nicknames by our tribe, that's when you know your title is legit is when CB: Clearly you got through that, things are the tribe gives it to you. The tribe calls her, “Cap” really moving and shaking for you guys, which for captain and they call me, “Chief ” so I think I'm so excited. You both have done awesome everybody really knows that she's running the in such a short period of time, especially with ship. She runs the ship, and you know sometimes that happening. I'm very analytical, CB: We talked about some negatives in very organized, meticulous and Tim is very much business, now I want to talk about some the salesperson. He's really experienced. Taking Over With Tim & Cindy Dodd TD: Here's the thing; I think progress happens TD: In 2020, long story short, the team so slowly that we hardly notice it. You have big sabotaging the company, that's my fault, right? breakthroughs, but I think challenges happen so I'm the leader, I’m the one that hired them, suddenly that you can’t ignore them. I think we have I'm the one that allowed the culture to become to be careful and celebrate the small wins that we what it was. We always like to just look at what have every day. When we ignore these small wins, it we could have done and control the situation makes crisis feel even more abrasive. We sat down better. Cindy is so good with operations and with our CPA the other day and walked through people, ever since she was 13-year-old, she was what our numbers were since last year and I go, entering modeling competitions, getting first “Oh my gosh! We have grown so much within our place, and just being so precise with her, “set a margins and our team.” It makes you think back to goal, accomplish the goal.” With this in mind, the time we were sitting there eating Ramen noodles. we spent all of 2020 thinking, “What do we I would say there has been some big breakthroughs, want this company to be like for real?” Culture, but I would just say more than anything as an vision, what every value is on that our PEMA entrepreneur you're going to face more challenges team values, we literally designed. What is the when you have those big wins. What's important is to company we want to look like, we want to live look back and just make sure you're focusing on the in, we want to deal with? Let’s just attract people progress; versus the negative stuff you deal with. that align with the values that we’re aligned with. I mean the culture wouldn't be what it is without CD: One major breakthrough or win that sticks Cindy, she really built that, and it's cool because out for me is our team. Seeing us going from the the team keeps it going. low point of employees sabotaging the business, to now, the kind of team that we have. Our team CD: Tim is right! We are very clear on our are all brought into the mission, the vision, and vision, where we are headed, and very clear on the values, they’re high performers. They run the all values. We hire/fire based on values, so if business, and to see that kind of team that we I have, you’re not in alignment with these ten things that I think is the is the biggest win. We see people hitting we prioritize, we put weight on – you’re just not personal, professional, financial goals. We see people a fit. This doesn't mean you're not exceptional leveling up in all areas of their lives. We have some at your role, you could be great, but if the values teammates in the Philippines, we see them making an don't gel with you, and you don't prioritize what impact for their families and being the breadwinner we prioritize, you’re not a fit. Being strict on who on that side. Just seeing our team and employees hit we let in based on the values; I think it's been that their personal goals I think has been the biggest win. game changer for us in building the kind of team that we have today. CB: I love that. I believe that when people have a great team it’s because the leader CB: Who in your lives, or individual life, is great, and that trickles down. What has has been a major mentor for you to get to shifted in your mind from before, compared where you are today? to now, to make your team great? What shifted in you guys to attract that? LUXE LIFE MAGAZINE 10

TD: You’re always told you need a mentor and you never really told how to get one. I would say I've wasted 10 years just waiting for a mentor to kind of magically show up because I never really had one. Then I started really reading books and realized that “OK, I'm just going to call these guys my mentor.” That helped a lot, but what really made change was paying money to be in the front row of conferences. You start to be around people like “Oh, this guy is making friends with me and he's doing a $100 million a year, that is cool.” You start getting in those rooms, and I would say when we learned that if you want great mentors, you should probably just pay for their time. That was the fastest point of growth for us. It was like we skyrocketed overnight. I could have done that 10 years earlier for me personally. I didn't have a magic mentor or anything. What about you?

CD: Yes! Yes, yes, yes absolutely! TD: Cindy and I, we always say it doesn't matter. So many times, people buy programs or mentorships or things and then they’re like, “Well you’d better give me the X amount returned back!” Cindy and I look at this like, if we're going to invest in something, we will personally ensure that we get 10 times the value from it. Even if the program is not that great, we will personally ensure we will get it to return. Regardless of if the person we’re working with isn't giving us exactly what we wanted. I think just taking that ownership of yourself and your actions is a serious portion of it.

CD: I didn't either to be honest. I think about there’s so many people on my journey that have had a major impact. My mom, that's the most supportive since I was a kid. I used to enter every single competition that I could enter, and she was the most supportive in every dream, every goal that I had. Mentorship-wise, I would go with saying the same as Tim. The moment that we paid for mentors in several different arenas is when we saw the fastest growth. I would even say I would call somebody my mentor that wasn't paid engagement. It's really tricky to pinpoint just one person, but definitely paid mentorship has had the biggest impact. CB: I agree with this completely, I always say with mentors and some people who hire mentors; they expect the mentor to do all these different things for them. The reality is, you must do the work yourself, that's number one. Number two; I don't care how much you pay for the mentor, I don't care if it was $1,000,000 or $10,000. I don't care how much it was. If that person said one sentence to change the trajectory of where you're going, it’s completely worth it. LUXE LIFE MAGAZINE 11

Taking Over With Tim & Cindy Dodd TD: Like you said Candice, you can't just pay a mentor and then magically results happen.

Now we’ve got emails so now I can send direct messages to people. You’ve got social media, now you can connect with people directly. Now we got CB: What is something that people would be tools like automation, right, so there's the sixth surprised to know about both of you? big innovation: automation. Now we can kind of automate and do things in bulk. With AI, we are TD: I mean she probably has a lot of more than now going to be able to automate humanization. me. I'm from the Midwest, grew up in a middle-class The level of humanization we're going to be able family. to do at scale is absolutely insane, and it is going to be this opportunity where it's going to be a gold CD: Let’s put in some fun facts. rush for some people. For those who do not adapt; it can be a graveyard for them. For ourselves, we're TD: Fun facts let’s do it! really pushing to stay ahead of that right now. CD: My parents are from Congo, I'm from South Africa. TD: My dad was a rodeo clown. Cindy didn’t even know that! Dallas, Texas rodeo clown.

CB: What are some personal goals you have for yourselves?

CD: Personal goals for me is expanding, getting out of my comfort zone. Every quarter we have this intention or what we call a “rock.” For CB: What are some goals or, what are we to example, “What is the big goal we're going to expect to see from you guys and from PEMA focus on?” Q4 for us, we always title it, “separation going into the first quarter of 2024, and season”. What are we going to do now this quarter beyond? that's going to set us up for success going into Q1, but also as everybody is going into vacation mode, TD: The biggest thing is we really believe that AI holiday mode. If we double down on our goals is going to radically shift every industry. We’ve spent were going to be ahead of the competition. So, a the last six months, we have twenty some people on “big rock” or focus for us is how do we hit our fiveour team, and we’ve tasked everybody for the last year goals in three months? What would it look two quarters how can you use AI in your role to like? What would it take? Just start thinking about, make your job more efficient, faster, more effective, “How do you accelerate the result? How do we with better outcomes. The big thing is you're looking remove time from the equation?” That's a big goal at client acquisition space, it's going to absolutely for us these last few months of the year and to just disrupt. You think about being fake and being able start expecting great things to happen. As you set to send customized videos all these different things. that intention, we know we're going to hit it. If you look at outbounds, you had a printing press and you have the postal service, that was the big CB: Absolutely. What are some questions breakthrough, now you can send direct mail. You you may get from other couples either have the telephone, now you can cold call. Then wanting to start a business or have a we get this thing called the Internet, we can start business together? What sort of advice connecting. (Cont.) would you give them? LUXE LIFE MAGAZINE 12

CD: The big question is, “How do you do it? How do you run a business with your spouse?” I think people think it's crazy. Maybe they've tried it before, or they know how they and their partner interact with one another. It makes a lot of people think, “I could never do it.” The common theme for us is we have complementary skills, which is why it works so well. We’re aligned in our vision our mission, our big goals, and we know where we’re headed. Tim and I write our goals every morning. We're so aligned in what we write out, we're working towards the same things. If anybody's ever considering starting a business with their spouse, you must have that conversation upfront. What are our goals? Be very clear on your intentions, be very clear on the reason why you're starting the business to begin with. If you can lay out your intentions clearly, it makes for a more effective, efficient relationship and business partnership. TD: I feel like we’ve been keeping our head down to the grindstone, so it doesn't feel like there's a ton of couples that we’ve talked to. CB: Things are not always sunshine and rainbows every day, is there a either Bible verse or quote, or motto that you kind of keep in the forefront of your mind that helps you pull forward when things get a bit difficult? TD: I think just remembering that both the good times and the bad times don't last forever. When things are like equanimity, when being able to stay calm in every situation, that is what I keep in my mind. Looking back, I know we always said, “We haven't come this far just to come this far!” When things are low or they are down, you look back at all the other times they've been low and down and you’re like, “I always figured it out, we always figure it out and the longer I sit here and whine about it, the more I'm delaying the solution.”

CD: The Bible verse that comes like repetition for me is, “He works all things together for good.” God will work all things together for good. The good, the bad, the challenges, the ups and downs, all of them are playing into his divine plan and purpose. I just have to trust that everything is going to work out.

“This doesn't mean you're not exceptional at your role, you could be great, but if the values don't gel with you, and you don't prioritize what we prioritize, you’re not a fit.”
