“Our goal is to make people feel comfortable in our galleries and guide clients to art that resonates with their vision,” says trailblazing Texas gallerist Laura Rathe of the eponymous Laura Rathe Fine Art, which recently exhibited at the highly acclaimed Art Miami. Overseeing gallery locations in Houston and Dallas, Rathe shares her insights into the art world—and a few key tips about collecting. laurarathe.com How do you select artists to highlight in your galleries? My team and I tend to focus on vibrant mid-career artists who are working at the top of their skills. Many of them are in museums and have academic backgrounds; others are self-taught with associations in important private and public collections.
What are you and your clients loving right now? If there’s a trend, it’s the explosion of mixed media artists. Over the past five years, we have added Zhuang Hong-yi, Stallman Studio, Chris Wood, Charles Patrick, Gil Bruvel, Anna Kruhelska, Miriam Fitzgerald Juskova and Javier León Pérez, to name a few. Any tips for acquiring art? First and foremost, buy what you love. Second, take a look at the art in your home before deciding—we provide the opportunity for our clients to live with their art before purchasing. Lastly, visit art openings and museum exhibitions. It’s not only educational but helps develop your eye. And it’s an excellent opportunity to meet artists with unique lives and a dedication to their passion.
STRIKING STONEWORK This Dallas designer’s latest work is rock solid. Denise McGaha’s newest Materials Marketing offerings include the addition of two fireplace designs and two entirely new lines: an exclusive group of five mosaic patterns ideal for flooring or vertical applications, and three stunning, hand-carved natural stone sinks available as a wall or deck mount. “I design custom products I can’t find on the market and these handcarved sinks and mosaic tiles are based upon the items I need most for our design projects,” McGaha explains. “I was inspired to create these designs after spending so much time at home last year, reimagining our family spaces for enhanced living.” The collection unites her multifaceted approach to interior design with Materials Marketing’s meticulous craftsmanship to create natural stone pieces with a timeless and versatile aesthetic. An Austin icon since it was built in 1886, The Driskill was acquired as part of the Unbound Collection by Hyatt in 2013—and now shines anew, thanks to the renovation of 14 guest suites on the historic side of the property. The project is helmed by award-winning architecture firm Clayton Korte, including principal Paul Clayton and associate partner George Wilcox, with refreshed interiors by Rottet Studio. “Our main goal for these guest suites was to enhance the functionality of each space while preserving the core essence of this historic hotel,” says Clayton, noting the guest suite renovations were inspired by the hotel’s 135-year history and the many grand events that have taken place there since its opening. “Clayton Korte’s work reflects a reverence for time and context while bringing a new spirit into the suite spaces with the addition of contemporary touches,” he continues. “Our designs carefully highlight some of the original architectural details and bring the hotel’s historic significance into focus.” The updated spaces boast new finishes and millwork, with a slight reconfiguration of four bathrooms. Amenities of the newly renovated Cattle Baron suite, for example, include a clawfoot soaking tub, walk-in shower, a spacious living and dining area with a private wet bar, and a separate bedroom with matching queen beds. In addition, two of the suites fronting Brazos Street now feature previously enclosed balcony spaces. “It was challenging and rewarding to re-expose some of the original exterior elements,” Clayton says. driskillhotel.com
OPEN HOUSE There’s no shortage of notable shop and showroom openings throughout the Lone Star State. In Austin, well-known outdoor furnishings brand Summer Classics Home recently opened a dedicated Gabby showroom on its campus (9900 RM-620), a 4,500-square-foot space showcasing Gabby’s signature Southern-inspired, hand-crafted furnishings—sofas, lamps, mirrors and more. Elsewhere, Decorative Center Houston welcomes Arsin Rug Gallery (5120 Woodway Drive, Suite 1000), a jewel box of 7,000 Persian, Turkish, Oriental and European rugs and carpets. There’s antiques, reproductions and modern styles from around the world, as well as the option for custom designs. “We feel confident that Arsin Rug Gallery will become a go-to rug source for Houston’s incredible network of interior designers,” notes sales manager Mark Odom. And in Dallas, British retailer OKA has established roots in the vibrant Knox/Henderson neighborhood (4531 McKinney Avenue), following the opening of its first U.S. location in Houston in the spring. The 9,000-square-foot space showcases OKA’s characterful vignettes (above) and classic British spaces—a Welsh hideaway cottage, west London townhouse and even a grand Kent country estate. We suggest mixing and matching the brand’s lamp bases with patterned fabric shades to create your own version of English style, right in the heart of Texas.

When I was 12 years old, I began my career selling antiques from a stall in London’s Greenwich Market. It was the 1980s then, and Art Deco was the height of fashion. It was one of the first design periods that I studied, and from that, my passion grew. Because I came from a theatrical background—originally, I wanted to be an actor—it’s only natural that I would be drawn to a style so closely associated with Hollywood glamour. With the advent of cinema, Los Angeles boomed during the 1920s and 1930s, and extraordinary spaces, like the Cicada Club in downtown L.A. and the historic Sunset Tower hotel, were built. For me, the appeal of Art Deco lies in its association with decadence. The world had just come out of World War I, and there was reason to celebrate. People wanted drama and floridity. We left behind the Edwardian and Arts-and-Crafts periods, and turned almost instantly to this brand-new era symbolized by ornate geometric forms. Of all the Art Deco styles, I’m particularly fond of Egyptian Revival. It conjures the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, and with that, an air of adventure, travel and romance. In my work and in my own home, many Orientalist and Moroccan motifs blend with the geometric vibe and monochromatic palette of Art Deco. Recently, I drew inspiration from the period to inform a collection of inlaid stone and lacquer accessories for SV Casa. We did a series of beautiful cases that open into bars, inspired by Hermès and Louis Vuitton steamer trunks from the 1930s. They recall one of the first Art Deco pieces I ever bought: a 1920s alligator case, which makes me long for the time when travel was new. In those days, people used silver- and-gold jars in sleek cases for toiletries. We used to travel in such style! I’ve kept it with me throughout my journeys. It’s a great nod to my past, both in my dealing in objects of that era and my love of Art Deco itself. Martyn Lawrence Bullard on the steps leading to the pool and gardens of his Los Angeles home. I was born in Seoul, South Korea, but moved to Michigan when I was three. Most of my ideas about my home country came from my parents, who were passionate about collecting and preserving Korean art. One of my favorite early memories was flying to New York City with my mother. She was shopping for a scholar screen— an artwork meant to decorate the study of a Yangban (a scholar of the highest class). They depict items a Yangban might exhibit to show his refinement: books, a peony, ink brushes. My mother was also searching for folk art—colorful, informal paintings, often with suggestive subject matter. I learned then that there were two schools of Korean art: the school based on courtly formalities, and the folk art hung in the homes of merchants or shamans. Adolescent me became fascinated with folk art. Rabbits smoking pipes! Mountains in every color under the sun! The rainbow hanbok of young girls! To me, these visions were the heartbeat of traditional Korean art—and today, they inspire every inch of my design aesthetic.
Some people think decorating is about picking pretty fabrics, but it is rooted in soils far deeper than that. As I design this home, I think of all the people who have lived here over the last two centuries, my family tree that dates back 700 years, and my children who will carry the future— and who, I hope, will tell everyone’s story. Last year, I purchased a home in New York’s Hudson Valley: a classic Colonial in the most idyllic countryside setting. As I dreamt of how to decorate, my thoughts turned to my heritage. One project I’m working on is designing a wallpaper with Fromental, inspired by the papers out of East Asia, which were traded in the New World in the 17th century. I’ll be incorporating both the structure of courtly paintings and the brightness of folk art, all presented in a modern way.

Ever since I was a child on a farm in Indiana, fashion has been my obsession. I was the middle child of nine—the Jan Brady of our family, and sort of invisible. After seeing The Mary Tyler Moore Show, my dream became to live in a city in an apartment. At age 8, I made a pact that I would one day move to New York and do glamorous things with my life. We didn’t have a ton of money, but my mother had amazing style. She made a lot of our clothes—think: red-white-and-blue bell bottoms with matching shirts. Even at age 5, I was picky about what colors I wanted to wear, and I hated being dressed like my brothers—I wanted control! Growing up, I fell in love with magazines. I’d go down to the local newsstand and pour over Vogue and GQ. One day, a handful of subscription cards fell out, and I noticed the “bill me later” part. I asked the shopkeeper if I could have them, filled them out, and for three months, I built a library. In high school, my parents let me get subscriptions—but I held onto those issues and read them over and over.
A lot of people see fashion as trivial, but I believe that it’s a nonverbal way of communicating with like-minded people. Especially in Manhattan, you’re always presenting yourself to the public in some way. For me, fashion is armor. It’s a silent means of declaring who you are. When I went to college, I declared a fashion design major before finding interiors. What I am is a strong fashion editor—I’m good at pairing things together in interesting ways: colors, textures, attitudes—and a mix of high-low. My velvet Gucci blazer with a Uniqlo sweater; a leather Prada trench coat with my favorite Scotch and Soda jeans. Fashion also feeds my approach to color—you see daring combinations on the runway before the home. This, in part, is what keeps my interiors optimistic and open-minded.

Provence
Happy place: About 7 years ago, I rented a 300-year-old house outside of Avignon with my family—and it was kind of an epiphany. We’d spend mornings by the pool, then drive through the Rhône and visit towns, like Roussillon, which has this incredible sandstone, terra-cotta and ochre palette. Only fitting: Provence has a similar climate to Los Angeles, and the building materials—stucco, painted wood windows and shutters, tiled roofs—are essentially the same as Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, a primary vernacular of Southern California. Dream delivered: From the minute you walk in the front gate, you’re in this other world of pea gravel, olive trees and lavender. You enter the house through a pair of French doors, and it’s all very open and transparent. To me, it’s transportive emotionally. The clients, the design team and I were all so taken with the authenticity of the Provençal lifestyle; we tried to capture it’s relaxed, casual elegance in this home. willigerarchitect.com

Early influence: My grandmother was enamored with Radio City Music Hall. Whenever she had the opportunity, she would take me to see a live show or a movie. We’d spend time walking around Rockefeller Center, and she would point out all of the friezes and statues. Aha moment: Four years ago, I did the 30 Rock tour. I wasn’t so interested in the TV aspect, but in wandering the halls and common spaces and taking pictures! Ode to Deco: The marble floor in my entry was inspired by an elevator waiting area at 30 Rock; I worked with The Rug Company on a runner that’s literally an adaptation of the carpeting in Radio City Music Hall; and my interior doors have the same Art Deco-influenced, raised panel design. Balancing act: Inspiration is all about knowing when to peel back. Like Coco Chanel famously advised: stand in front of the mirror and remove one item. A Vintage Photograph
Unexpected idea: This photo of Sonny Bono and former Mayor Frank Bogert was the first inspiration image we showed our client. We overlaid it with a pink filter to tease out the magical light that happens at sunset in Palm Springs. There’s a rugged romance—a laid-back, masculine mood to it—that sung to us. Desert journey: There’s no front yard or backyard, per se. You enter through a portal in the Ficus, then move through these different sequences that are always changing: a fire pit surrounded by muhly grass, a palo Verde grove, an olive tree dining orchard. It speaks to this notion of traveling on horseback through an ephemeral landscape. Message received: For this project, we “borrowed” palm trees from the neighbors’ yards—and the San Jacinto mountains peaking above the hedges. At sunset, with the pink grasses in full bloom, the image of the cowboys and the palms—that feeling of a total Palm Springs escape—is really what you’re getting. sdisf.com

The English Country House
Mood board: From the first time I saw the property, the story in my mind was that it was a kooky British grandmother’s house that had been passed down to the next generation. It’s a large, new construction home, but the way the rooms were laid out—the intimacy of scale and the classical millwork— suggested history. Hero piece: I’ve always been drawn to tapestries, and here, they provided a strong “old manor house” through line. We hung a large 18thcentury Flemish tapestry in the living room and wallpapered the dining room in a Scalamandré print for a European country house vibe. Homework: I pinned about a billion pictures. Upton House, a Georgian manor in Gloucestershire that we referenced, has this hall with the most perfect minty green, which inspired the shades of celadon throughout. I love historical colors; tertiary tones are so much more interesting. studiohus.com

Modern muse: Our projects often begin with a sensibility imbued by a person, and in this case, Sophia Loren was one of our initial drivers for the mood and design intent; she’s the very embodiment of la dolce vita. Dramatic details: My clients wanted to transform a pastiche Colorado lodge into a home that was cool, effortless and glamorous; a space that lights up at night for entertaining, but also provides a languishing daytime salon. A core element to our work is always ‘the mix’ and for this dolce vita-driven project, the mix manifests in interesting combinations of textures and weaves. Think: mohair velvets and metallic glazed linens, marble and lacquer, and patinated brass elements. Secret sauce: It can be easy to go over the top, especially when you are going for high-impact design. The art is to know when you have done enough to tell the story. For a new home in Point Reyes Station, California, architect Dave Sturm channeled a design icon’s purist approach. Origin story: Our client grew up visiting Mexico and had loved Barragán since childhood. Field work: I was a budding architect when Barragán won the Pritzker Prize, and had been wanting to visit his home for decades. This project prompted my wife and I to spend two weeks in Mexico City. We visited several museums a day, and many Barragán buildings. I immersed myself in his spatial relationships. Good stuff: Barragán had this really limited, yet influential palette; a very high-modern aesthetic. His pink is almost like the national color. Key details: Nothing extraneous; we brought the walls all the way down to the floor—no trim, baseboards or moldings. And we used steel casement-style windows for the cleanest sight lines. Take it back: It’s a reference, not an homage. We were inspired by his simplicity. If Barragán had signed on, I imagine the walls might be pink. butlerarmsden.com

WITH HER LATEST COLLECTION, DESIGNER LORI WEITZNER DELIVERS AN ODE TO CENTRAL PARK. W R I T T E N B Y H E AT H E R C A R N E Y
Imagine wandering through Central Park. Bright pink petals highlight a grid between cobblestones. Intricate moldings and sandstone carvings come into focus on stair railings. At sunset, the city skyline turns from orange to golden to purple to gray. It’s this romantic setting that provided designer Lori Weitzner with hope and refuge during the dark days of the pandemic—while also opening her eyes to patterns, textures and colors hidden in plain sight. “It was a lesson in the idea that you’re so familiar with something that you stop looking,” says the designer. “I began to see everything in a whole new way.” The resulting collection is an ode to Central Park—an exploration of fabrics and wallcoverings that captures the beauty of a city in the midst of rebirth. “I love New York. It’s what keeps my senses alive. You pass a bakery, then you pass litter on the street. It’s all there,” says Weitzner. “Central Park is an oasis to the urban grit.” IPhone in hand, the designer would “click, click, click” on weekly rambles through her sanctuary, then return to her quiet Chelsea design studio where she printed and arranged the photos on a large white table. From there, the creative work would begin—editing, sorting, sketching and playing with colors and materials. Chariot, for example, a soft jacquard linen with subtle damask patterning, evolved from an image she snapped of traditional stonework near Bethesda Fountain. “We painted it in the studio, and then, because we didn’t want such a traditional pattern, we took a sponge

and broke it up with texture so it would feel eroded,” explains Weitzner. Illumination, an embroidered textile, stems from sketches of foliage in the Shakespeare Garden, while Mesmerize, a cut velvet print, takes its cues from the fountain’s stone filigree. With the line complete and her schedule picking up, it might be surprising to hear that the designer still carves out time to walk in the park—but it’s a habit she’s not willing to give up. “The pandemic made me slow down and appreciate the details,” reflects Weitzner. “This collection is about nature, but it’s also about seeing things anew.”

By the 1930s, Eileen Gray was a solidified furniture designer and architect—a rare accomplishment for a woman by early 20th-century standards. Of her many contributions to the modern movement, the Irish-born creative designed the ubiquitous (and replicated) adjustable side table, which she designed specifically for her home dubbed E-1027, shown above, on the French Riviera. Gray set out to build the residence— her first ever—in her late 40s, and it still stands today as a survey of modern design.

Paul R. Williams was the first-ever Black member of the American Institute of Architects. A Los Angeles legend, Williams designed some 2,000 buildings in the area during his career, with A-list clients including Frank Sinatra and Lucille Ball. In the 1940s, he was hired for the renovation of the Beverly Hills Hotel, where he also fashioned the famous hand-written logo and iconic pink-and-green color scheme. What a beautifully layered space! This kitchen is an homage to the owner, whose zeal for art, food and life shines through in the design. When she and her family moved from Mexico to the Atlanta area, they acquired a charming bungalow property and she promptly saved her pennies for 12 years to have her dream “Matthew Quinn” kitchen, as she explained, which was truly the ultimate compliment. Wow. What did she request? Thinking outside of the box was important to the client. She wanted to make the kitchen uniquely her own, which included covering the walls with art, creating plenty of storage for cookbooks and even adding cork flooring that provides comfort when standing and cooking. But it’s really about this funky mix of colors and materials that works so well together. Talk to us about the details. The Amazonia Quartzite screamed “bar area.” The boldly colored veining of the stone is paired with an equally striking blue paint on the cabinetry that creates a vibrant, fun moment. CALMING INFLUENCE CHRISTOPHER PEACOCK What was the inspiration for this serene palette? A big, beautiful picture window decorates the kitchen, and we didn’t want the rest of the space to compete with that focal point, so there was a conscious effort to keep the colors more earthy and muted. We went with a two-tone paint effect for the cabinetry: a lovely olive or sage green on the island and then a warmer gray on the perimeter. Walk us through the rest of the design. The scheme was about making it simple and quiet while keeping it spacious. There wasn’t a strong desire to fill the walls with unnecessary cabinetry; rather our focus was on the
materials and finishes. A handmade subway tile with varying shades makes for a beautiful backsplash that provides subtle movement; we avoided anything too shiny and went with brushed and satin nickel hardware. How did you approach scale? This is a very large kitchen with a barreled ceiling. So we grounded the environment with a large island featuring cutting blocks at both ends and a custom pewter-and-nickel metal hood that anchors one wall. The island table developed into a multifunctional element with storage and seating, as well as a place to work, prepare food and entertain.

This kitchen is in an older home, right? It’s an absolutely stunning Spanish Renaissance residence that was built in the early 1900s along the Hudson River. Unfortunately, the kitchen was in bad shape after a recent update, but I was lucky that the client wanted to go back to its historic character. I am a big believer in taking from the past to create the future and spent a lot of time understanding the original aesthetic of this property.
How does your background inform your designs? I love classical architecture and historic structures—I’ve been a part of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art for a long time. Everything I do now, even after all this time, goes back to the aesthetic of old homes and what they teach us.

Where did you start? Before I did anything, there were several architectural changes that needed to be made, including taking down a wall, reworking a window and altering the ceiling. Then, I began the mission of taking a very narrow kitchen and making it functional. A lot of the elements, such as the metalwork and wood detailing, are inspired by 19th-century European kitchens.

JEAN LIN, COLONY In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, then-design journalist Jean Lin sparked an idea: invite local New York City artists to craft works from debris for storm relief. In the process, Lin grew familiar with the growth and representation struggles faced by independent makers—and the idea for a new, community-driven gallery model was born. Where the industry-standard commission hovers around 50 percent, Colony takes a smaller fraction of each sale, and charges a stabilized monthly co-op fee. Their contract also includes a non-exclusivity clause, which “shows our true intention of putting the bottom line of the designers we rep before our own,” says Lin. Expanding its influence and capital, Colony has since launched an in-house consultancy offering marketing, art direction and interior design services. “The vision moving forward is that these branches of business scale in tandem,” says Lin. “Which goes back to Colony’s founding spirit and genuine belief that all ships rise with the tide.” goodcolony.com

“I don’t love the word ‘disruption,’ but I am passionate about asking the question, ‘how can we make people’s lives easier?’ And I think the answer to that lies in meeting them where they are,” shares Anderson Somerselle. For Somerselle, a veteran of the textiles industry, this passion manifested in a digital-first showroom designed to aggregate boutique lines—as well as their up-to-date stock numbers and samples—in one destination. “It’s an honest response to witnessing how many designers and clients start their inspiration process online,” he notes. With the lower overhead associated with a digital footprint, Somerselle also provides a more affordable representation avenue for smaller brands. “It made sense to bring together these amazing artisans in a virtual showroom first, because there’s more reach,” he explains. “Eventually, we’ll open a physical space, but that will be a totally different experience. I want people to say, ‘Wow! I want to live here.’ ” somerselle.com

In a past life, Noam Dvir and Daniel Rauchwerger worked as critics at the Israeli newspaper Haaretz before falling in love, heading west to earn their masters at Harvard and founding BoND, a holistic architecture and design firm focused on expanding traditional ideologies of home. “In the residential environment, there’s this mold of how a space should be organized—but design for non-nuclear families looks different,” explains Dvir, pointing to the themes of gathering and desire that often distinguish their work. “Design should explore many different identities and lifestyles, and we really wear that on our sleeves.” With a fast-expanding residential practice, the couple has their sights set on more cultural projects in the commercial space. (They recently designed Company Gallery, a leading queer art institution, and are fast at work on a trans-led after-hours nightclub.) “It’s very important to us to work on projects that people will have access to, and that feed us spiritually,” says Rauchwerger, adding, “the real fun comes in sharing.” bureaund.com

“I truly don’t know a lot about sustainability—and that’s kind of the point!” demurs Zoe Feldman. For the Washington, D.C.-based designer, the birth of her daughter in 2018 collided with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s devastating special report on global warming, spurring her to evaluate her own role in the climate crisis. After researching avenues of impact—and

THE STORYTELLERS HOMAN RAJAI AND ELENA DENDIBERIA, STUDIO AHEAD
For Homan Rajai and Elena Dendiberia, design is both a global and local affair. What it is not is siloed around Eurocentrism. Meeting as young designers, the pair, with their respective Iranian and Russian roots, felt similarly disconnected from the world of European antiques they were living in, so they built a new framework. Questions like, What philosophies do you relate to? distinguish their client questionnaire, and Rajai and Dendiberia champion a diverse network of vendors working in traditional crafts. “There’s this assumption that—say, Persian rugs—are in the past tense. We’re educating our clients that there are living, breathing, modern-day craftspeople making these pieces,” says Rajai. A promise to “seek biological over technical solutions” nests at the core of Jessica Viola’s approach to the garden. Certified in ecological and permaculture design, Viola (one of a handful of licensed female landscape contractors in California) cut her teeth rehabilitating lawns into gardens in the California drought. Those regenerative principles have propelled her business since. Whether sculpting brims in the landscape to better harness rainfall, or planting for erosion control and fire resistance, Viola’s bottom line is embracing the intrinsic characteristics of each property, fostering the age-old relationships between people, flora and fauna amidst a changing climate. 4 | Should I plan more money than the contract price?
The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) is the only independent national association dedicated solely to the remodeling industry. Austin NARI’s goal is to help homeowners find the right professional partners to execute their remodel project. Austin NARI wants each homeowner to get the maximum value and enjoyment for the dollars they invest in their remodel and to avoid the pitfalls so many make when hiring ill-equipped contractors. Ask your remodeling contractor if their company is a member of Austin NARI.
Additional work or a change in the project requested by the remodeling homeowner usually requires a contract price change. Planning for the unforeseen is wise, though, so putting aside an extra 10% over the contract price makes for a less stressful remodel.
2 | Should I get multiple estimates for a remodeling project? While conventional wisdom dictates getting three estimates for anything involving labor, this doesn’t necessarily hold true when it comes to comprehensive remodeling projects such as a kitchen, bathroom, addition, or whole house remodel. The real comparison is in the team you will be working with. Chemistry and trust are key! NARI recommends that you interview at least three remodelers and then select the one you feel most comfortable with to bid out your project. This is because there are multiple ways of tackling a project and, unless you know exactly which methods and/or the subs the contractor will be using, there is no way to get an apples-to-apples comparison.
3 | What can I expect to do while a remodeling project is being done in my home? Most importantly, keep the lines of communication open between you and your contractor. Ask questions. Let them know what your family schedule is and whether you have pets confined somewhere. It’s important to keep the work areas off limits to children and pets for their safety; however, you may have a little extra dust and dirt in your house, so keeping the work area off limits will avoid them tracking the dust to other parts of the house.

5 | While I’m interviewing remodeling contractors, what questions should I ask? Look for a company with an established business history in your community. Surviving in any business in today’s competitive marketplace is a difficult task. Most successful contractors are proud of their history in the industry.
6 | What is the time frame for starting the project? Now is the time to ask questions about work schedules. You should ask: What is your estimate for completion? How early will your crew normally begin work? When will they normally quit for the day? Will I be contacted about delays or changes in the schedule? By whom?
7 | Do you have design services available? If you are considering a large or involved project, you will need design services. If the contractor does not have design-build capabilities, you should consider hiring an architect and/or designer. Depending on the size and scope of the project, you may also need a structural engineer.

AB Architecture is an acclaimed practice of experienced architects based in Austin since 1996. We are celebrating our 25th year this year and look forward to continuing to serve our clients for many years. Name influences and inspirations that inform your work. The most important influences are our clients. We look at this as a collaboration, and through this partnership, we develop projects that are unique to them and their sites. How do you include the client in your creative process? We spend the time necessary with our clients to get to know them and understand what their goals are. We ask them to participate as much or as little as they have time for. Our goal is to serve them through the entire process.

T
he walls of interior designer Tori Rubinson’s Fort Worth residence may be elaborately trimmed or lacquered to a high sheen, but it is, first and foremost, a throw-the-pillowson-the-floor kind of place. “It is beautiful yet approachable,” she says. “When we entertain, we want guests to feel comfortable—not as though their kids can’t run through the house.” For Rubinson and her husband, Adam, entertaining doesn’t just mean intimate dinners with a few friends. It means charity and church events for more than 80 guests. So when they set about designing their new home in the Colonial Hills neighborhood, the couple asked architect Skip Blake for generously sized rooms following a traditional, Southern Colonial floor plan, with formal spaces at the front and family-friendly rooms wrapping around a pool at the back. “We told him, ‘We don’t want to focus on square footage; we want to focus on how we’ll really use different spaces,’ ” Rubinson recalls. More specifically, she continues, “Adam wanted a dining table wide enough to have a lavish spread and still have room for place settings.” An adjacent prep kitchen is also equipped to accommodate caterers on party nights—or the family’s children on cozy cookiebaking afternoons. And the long living room opens to the pool terrace via three sets of French doors, facilitating easy indoor-outdoor entertaining. Though each room’s footprint is grand, “we didn’t do two-story ceilings,” Blake notes. “There’s none of that cavernous feeling that was so prevalent in decades past.” Emphasizing the intimacy, Rubinson adorned the ceilings with elaborate moldings—with assistance from designer Andrew Howard, whose services were a surprise anniversary gift from Adam. The approach yielded dramatic results, including seven-layer coffers in the living room and a complementary design for the lower kitchen ceiling. For the breakfast room, Rubinson enlisted Accents of France’s Philippe Le Manach to help design treillage panels covering the walls and a portion of the ceiling. “It’s a detail that’s been part of the architecture of France for centuries,” Rubinson explains, “but I wanted to do something different and placed an ivory grass cloth behind the trellis for textural interest.”

The trellis is painted Rubinson’s signature color, Farrow & Ball’s Light Blue No.22, which falls on the pale end of a spectrum of blues used throughout, from the main bedroom’s periwinkle walls to the game room’s navy-on-aqua beamed ceilings. “I’m drawn to coastal colors and think they’re very calming,” Rubinson explains. “Life is chaotic, so having serene hues is important to me.” But there’s a place for drama, too. From their seats at a custom mahogany table, for example, dinner guests enjoy a tantalizing glimpse of the butler’s pantry’s deep-blue lacquered cabinets. “It took about three months to complete,” Rubinson says of the finish. “It was sand and paint, sand and paint, until it was as reflective as glass.” Antiques sourced from Round Top to Paris add to the glamour. The breakfast room’s chandelier is a find from a French village. The dining room’s Venetian mirror hangs above a marble-topped, Louis XVI-style sideboard displaying Rubinson’s grandmother’s china. Viewed from across a room, new upholstered furnishings exude a similar air of refined elegance. Up close, however, each piece invites relaxation, from the dining room’s scalloped, velvet-covered seats to the living room’s mohair sofa. “The main goals were to keep the home feeling fresh and new while incorporating beautiful antiques that I loved,” Rubinson notes. Meanwhile, textiles often serve as the starting point for her compositions, like the floral pillow fabric sparking the living room’s palette of blues, corals and chartreuse greens, or the main bedroom’s feminine hydrangea print, its hues extending to the grasscloth walls and the adjacent bathroom’s marblemosaic floors. “I love when a home transitions well from room to room,” Rubinson says. “There are a lot of colors and textures, but they all work together seamlessly.” At the project’s outset, the Rubinsons decided to incorporate an old marble mantel from the property’s original residence. Originally built for a room with 8-foot ceilings, the ornate piece required both an extended base—fabricated with help from builder Douglas Brooks—and confident decorating to merge its ornate character with the living room’s slipcovered furnishings and abaca rug. And this, it seems, is where Rubinson shines. “I love a mix of modern and traditional elements,” she says. “The beauty of this house is in that marriage of old and new.”
Farrow & Ball’s Teresa’s Green walls and Stiffkey Blue beams set the game room’s palette, which interior designer Tori Rubinson emphasized with Carleton V Ltd.’s Bodrum fabric for the Chaddock Poppy chairs and Oxus in Blues for the valence; Crypton fabric covers the Hickory Chair sofa. Creativity drives the collaboration and design behind this exuberant Austin abode’s update.

ou can’t simply go to a store and come home with rooms that look like this,” says designer Jennifer Fisher of her client’s Austin residence. “It requires years of collecting and understanding your own loves and likes.” That appreciation for sentiment, and perhaps even a little nostalgia, is what strengthened the bond between Fisher and homeowner Cat Prince, a longtime friend and collaborator. “She’s a collector, and it’s important to her to be surrounded by her things,” Fisher continues. So when it came time to begin work on this existing home, the designer’s goal was to simply let her client’s unique character shine. Working with builder Rusty Bannerman, Fisher and Cat—an experienced home-renovator in her own right—took a gentle approach to refreshing the midcentury structure’s interiors. “Cat wasn’t looking to overhaul the house. She wanted to keep its integrity, but modernize it,” Fisher explains. While previous owners had updated the abode over the years, this project for Cat and her husband, Rudy, largely included refurbishing floors, repainting, refreshing bathrooms and changing doors and trim where necessary. They also widened the door from the kitchen into the dining room, but otherwise left the rooms virtually untouched. Furnishing them is where the fun really began. “The house is filled with things I’ve gathered along the way. I keep recycling and repurposing,” says the client, pointing to a pair of ottomans purchased two decades ago that she has since reupholstered, one in an eye-catching leopard print and the other in velvet. “And I bought the Lucite stool two houses ago for a dressing table, but here it’s in the entry,” she adds. Artworks, too, have been collected over the years, including a Paco Felici bird painting in the dining room found in Houston, and numerous works by friends and family or even of her own. “I like what I like,” the owner says unapologetically. “I also love to buy when I travel, so a few pieces were splurges from galleries in places like Marfa, New Orleans, Barcelona and more.” There are new additions, too, including a large wire sculpture that Fisher

nabbed in Round Top just before she spotted celebrity designer Kelly Wearstler eyeing it. Also new to the home is a custom Kyle Bunting rug for the dining room. “Cat has always been a fan of Missoni, so we discussed colors and created a custom pattern,” says Fisher. “I always ask clients about their favorite hotels, what they like to wear, and the psychology and that ‘getting to know you’ conversation helps me make better decisions about what they’re drawn to.” Noticing that the dining room’s light fixture was offcenter from the table, Fisher also immediately remembered a cantilevered chandelier she had seen at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair. Placed over a table surrounded by a vintage set of chairs, the Rosie Li design perfectly balances the ceiling space. And as luck would have it, a sideboard that came with the house nicely rounds out the eclectic mix. Other furnishings harmonized just as serendipitously, including a pair of lamps in the main bedroom that also came with the abode. Remaining open to ideas allowed both Fisher and her client to fully embrace surprises like this, including the black chinoiserie secretary desk from Uptown Modern that found a spot in the bedroom. While the duo had planned to fill that space with a different piece, and originally envisioned the secretary for the living room, “we changed the plan and moved it to the bedroom,” notes Fisher, explaining they painted the existing nightstands to match. “Collecting and honing help tell a story and make the design interesting.” “I have to love where I live,” chimes the homeowner, who has also resided in London, Manhattan and San Francisco. “Making our homes is my creative outlet.” This time around, her collaboration with Fisher resulted in spaces— some intimate, others more spacious—that are ideal for putting her signature imaginative flair on display, especially when the music-loving family hosts jam sessions with guests. These occasions are even easier now thanks to outdoor living spaces ideal for relaxing, be it with a dip in the pool or watching the sunset. Adds the client: “This is a feel-good house, a wonderful house in which to be creative—and I knew Jennifer could be creative with me.”

xpect the unexpected when you step inside the studio of ceramicist Sunshine Thacker. A maker of extraordinary clay objects, the San Antonio creative strives to never box herself into a single category or style of art. “Having a background in architecture has allowed me to evaluate the material differently and push technical boundaries I may have not done otherwise,” says the California native, who studied architecture at Texas A&M University. She had a career in commercial real estate before venturing out with her own business in 2019, following her dream of working with clay. “My vision is to be myself and see what happens. It’s an aggressive, breakneck drive to see what I’m capable of doing.”
The ceramicist hasn’t wasted any time on that front. As the mastermind behind her own line of customizable sculptural ceramic furniture and lighting shaped and molded by hand, Thacker strikes the perfect balance between functionality and decorative splendor with her whimsical works. An example is her recent collection of mirrors and lighting, entitled “Birth of Medusa,” which incorporates such fitting design elements as snake-like coils and spheres, and Thacker plans to expand the collection with not only chairs but also a wearable costume bodice. “It is a complete departure from my previous work, which was very smooth and controlled,” she notes. “It has been a way to explore the innate plastic quality of clay and allow that property to be front and center.” True to form, Thacker continues to dream bigger and bolder. “I’d love
a kiln that can fit a sofa because I love challenging myself. The larger the piece, the more of a challenge with physics and thermodynamics,” she adds. That same sense of fearlessness inspired her coveted collection of Timpani planters, which feature a torpedo-like body supported by three legs. “I wanted to create a cool piece and figure out a way to suspend the clay; it was trying to answer a technical question I had for myself,” she explains. As is generally the case with her work, Thacker simply sketched out her ideas on paper and then trusted the process, working out the technical issues during the progression of creating the piece. “And now it’s taken on a life of its own,” she says. “Clay requires me to work more slowly and with purpose. It is a metaphor for solving life’s problems.”

t was a diamond in the rough just waiting to be discovered—or, in this case, rediscovered. Located amongst a mix of new builds and remodels, the 1970s ranch-style house stood as a rare architectural gem destined to shine again in the hands of its new owners, a couple with an appreciation for its cozy West Coast bungalow vibe. “We believe it’s our job to find the true essence and style of our clients, elevate it and make their home reflect them rather than us,” says interior designer Jana Erwin. With that in mind, Erwin and co-interior designer Audrey Tehauno collaborated to transform the abode with clean, modern spaces filled with boho and vintage elements for a warm and inviting feel. Despite multiple renovations over the decades, the sprawling single-story structure retained much of its original charm, including brick floors and a two-faced wood-burning fireplace bracing the corner between the living room and kitchen. The layout, a U-shaped configuration wrapping around a courtyard, also remained untouched. For the owners, that easy, breezy indoor-outdoor connection made the house unique and, more importantly, made them feel at ease. “They hoped to recreate the kind of ‘al fresco’ lifestyle they enjoyed while living on the West Coast, but the Texas heat doesn’t exactly accommodate one,” explains Erwin. “We compensated for that by placing a set of 10-foot metal accordion doors across the back of the house that fully retract to offer a seamless transition from the kitchen to the outdoor dining and living areas.” The duo also designed interior walls in the dining room, hallway and main bedroom with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto the lush courtyard. For an air of authenticity, the courtyard is encased by vertical beds containing a wide variety of succulents, grasses and other plantings similar to those native to California. “You’re surrounded by green, which allows you to experience the beauty and tranquility of the outdoors without needing to leave the comfort of air conditioning,” chimes Erwin. In fact, Mother Nature played a role in many of the selections. “We considered the environmental

impact of our design decisions,” recalls Tehauno. From the framework to the furnishings to the finishing touches, eco-friendly elements abound and enrich the crisp, white-walled interior with layers of visual and tactile interest. Segreto Finishes hand-applied Tadelakt plaster to the back wall in the powder bathroom as well as the tub and shower area in the main bathroom. Rooted in the ancient Moroccan decorative arts tradition, the lime soapbased plaster is recyclable and biodegradable with a finish that is both watertight and anti-microbial. The powder bathroom countertop is comprised of simple concrete, as is the built-in bench seat running the length of the living room. Natural grass cloth wraps the walls of the main bedroom to create a cocoon-like effect softened by piles of organic linen and cotton bedding. Even the mattress is organic. “We thoughtfully sourced products made from honest, durable materials that also convey a luxurious, high-end sensibility,” Tehauno adds. Where possible, the duo also either purchased items nearby or reused pieces from the owners’ existing collection. “Shopping local allows us to support small businesses in our community while limiting waste from shipping materials and cutting down on gas consumption and emissions,” Tehauno notes. To that end, many of the new acquisitions came from close-by favorites—select floor lamps from Found, side tables from Area and seating from Kuhl-Linscomb, just to name a few—and the dining table is a family heirloom. Meanwhile, reviving and repurposing vintage and antique pieces further contributed to the sustainability efforts, with Murano-glass lighting, an African Senufo stool and a coffee table made from an Indian wooden ox cart lending the interiors a bespoke flair and worldly aesthetic. Grounding each space, vintage rugs deliver warmth, depth and a hint of color, including a vintage Moroccan Azilal rug in the Zen-like entry and a Turkish Kilim one in the main bedroom. “The combination of boho accessories, natural textures and live greens infuse the residence with a sense of personality and whimsy,” Erwin explains. “But, overall, the quiet monochrome palette, clean-lined furnishings and contemporary forms keep the ambience hip and sleek.” And for their clients, it simply feels like home.
Against walls painted Sherwin-Williams’ Pure White, an abstract painting from Memorial Antiques & Interiors marks the entry to this Houston home with interiors by NEST Design Group. Below it, a Buddha statue from the homeowners’ collection sits atop a rustic pine console. A vintage Moroccan Azilal rug completes the vignette.
