Up to 30 percent of a home’s heating and cooling energy can escape through windows. With their exclusive cellwithin-a-cell design, Hunter Douglas honeycomb shades provide superior room insulation, helping to reduce your energy consumption and utility costs.

With PowerView® automation, shades can be scheduled to automatically reposition throughout the day to create the perfect balance of light, privacy and insulation … morning, noon and night. And it easily integrates with other whole-home automation systems.

LETTER EDITOR’S

Standing beside artist Will Ryman’s towering LongHouse 6 sculpture at LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton.

Full Bloom

Pamela Jaccarino VP, Editor in Chief @pamelajaccarino

LUXESOURCE.COM

photo: lena yaremenko.

This past summer, I had the pleasure of visiting LongHouse Reserve, a 16-acre reserve and sculpture garden in East Hampton founded by the brilliant textile designer, Jack Lenor Larsen. Amongst the more than 60 contemporary sculptures, I was particularly taken with artist Will Ryman’s colossal, and fanciful LongHouse 6, an improbable, exaggerated 24-foot-tall cluster of six roses and fallen petals rendered in stainless steel, resin and painted in cadmium red light. The rose remains an idealized symbol for romance, natural beauty and perfection. Yet, Ryman designed his petals with bumps and irregularities. You can clearly detect its hand-worked quality, and his hint to embrace fading beauty, ephemera and the temporary nature of all things. As we forge ahead into the end of another “strange” year for the world, I hope that you will seek out and embrace beauty in all its forms. For artistry and design will always be in bloom, one way or another.

Health, Wellness, Sustainability, Innovation MAKING IT EASIER FOR PEOPLE TO LIVE HAPPIER, HEALTHIER LIVES. The kitchen has long been known as the heart of the home. Perhaps that is because it keeps the home, and all who live within it, nourished. And perhaps the appliances central to its design have a far nobler purpose than merely storing, cooking and cleaning. That is certainly what Beko believes. The brand feels that the perfect appliance can empower people to lead healthier lives, while technological advancements—like the use of recycled materials and carbon-neutral manufacturing—help the planet to be healthier, too. The Beko

team is deeply committed to technologies that perform at the lowest levels of energy with the smallest impact on the earth’s resources, because of its overriding belief that you can’t lead a healthy life without a healthy planet. In business for more than 66 years, with products sold in 140 countries, 28 production facilities and 40,000 employees globally, Beko has been a household name in Europe for many years. But recently, the brand has expanded into the United States, bringing its commitment to health and wellness to even more homes.

Preserve Your Produce, Preserve the Planet Imagine keeping your fruits and veggies fresh for up to 30 days, reducing trips to the store and pressure on your grocery budget. Best of all, with less food going bad and ending up in a landfill, it benefits Mother Earth as well. It almost sounds too good to be true, but Beko’s EverFresh+® food-preservation system does just that. Here’s how: • A series of crispers use breathable smart materials and other advances to maximize humidity and minimize moisture loss. • Active Fresh Blue Light™ recreates photosynthesis conditions to preserve the vitamin C in produce, which keeps it tasting its best. • An energy-saving ProSmart™ inverter compressor helps maintain vibrancy and nutritional qualities. • In keeping with Beko’s pledge to make wellness attainable for all, the EverFresh+® system is available throughout the line of Beko refrigerators, not just the top-end models.

TALKING SHOP AIR GUITAR

For 20 years, Craig and Kris DeMarco have been transforming Phoenix neighborhoods by way of urbaninspired restaurants and markets, like Postino WineCafe and La Grande Orange. Now they’ve brought that same energy to their latest project: a 5,000-square-foot convenience store in Gilbert called Air Guitar. Developed in partnership with Eric and Elissa Seitz (who also happen to be the largest Chevron convenience-store franchisees in Arizona), Air Guitar features offerings such as a fullservice coffee bar, flowers by Camelback Flowershop, prepackaged meals by M Culinary Concepts, fine wines, craft beers and, yes, even lottery tickets. Here, Craig reflects on this new venture. airguitar4life.com Why create a convenience store? We decided to take what Eric and I have separately done for the last 20 years and see how they collide.

How did you decide to work with debartolo architects? They’d done some work for Joe Johnston [of the adjacent Agritopia], so they had a deep appreciation of the area. We wanted it to look like a modern park, mostly for the agricultural history of the land. We didn’t want it to be a sea of asphalt. In fact, we didn’t use any asphalt. What is your favorite design element at Air Guitar? We have two big, beautiful patios, and we did floor-to-ceiling glass walls. We planted more than 60 trees, and when they all mature, it will feel like this was plopped down in the middle of a park. What’s next? Eric and I are already looking for real estate to do a second one of these. But we’re really going to focus on this for a while. We love being part of the community.

SHELF LIFE

As any desert dweller knows, the landscape’s saturated sunsets and botanical austerity create an ideal backdrop for a variety of architectural styles. In Santa Fe, architects have responded with designs that are rooted in tradition yet also forward thinking in execution. The result is an architectural authenticity captured in Santa Fe Modern: Contemporary Design in the High Desert. Authored by Helen Thompson with photographs by Casey Dunn, the book features 20 distinctive residences that highlight Santa Fe’s emerging modernist design. “Santa Fe Modern comes out at a time when it has never been more urgent to think about how we are at home in the world,” Thompson says. “Modern houses in Santa Fe seem as if they belong in the dramatic desert landscape, and that sense of belonging is the real reason modernism works so well there.” monacellipress.com

COLLABORATION

JULIA BUCKINGHAM X COUNTRY FLOORS

SCENE

DESIGN

They say the third time’s the charm, but designer Julia Buckingham only needed one try to get it right when it came to creating a capsule collection of glazed ceramic tiles for Country Floors. Buckingham, who divides her time between Chicago and Scottsdale, drew inspiration from what she calls the “tenacity of florals and blooms in such an acrid, desert climate.” The resulting collection, “Desert Wildflowers,” consists of five tile patterns whose saturated hues pay homage to both desert flora and Buckingham’s passion for abstract art. When installed, the 6-inch tiles create patterns that look like watercolor paintings, whether that’s the blushing Kiss Me Quick, the soothing Mist Flower or Paint Brush (shown left), whose moss and rose tones evoke a blooming prickly pear cactus. But this artistic, painterly collection is also enticingly durable. Designed for vertical installations, the tiles work as well in entryways as they do in bathrooms, kitchens and, as Buckingham recently discovered, a pool house. “It has this almost undulating pattern,” Buckingham observes of the finished installation. “It looks like somebody did a pen-and-ink drawing all over the walls.” countryfloors.com

CANOPY SCOTTSDALE What’s old is new again, at least in Old Town where Canopy Scottsdale enjoys the distinction of being the first new hotel to open in over a decade. Tucked away among galleries, the modern hotel resides across the street from Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West. It’s one of a handful of buildings where the contemporary aesthetic balances Old Town’s penchant for low-slung buildings and Old West styling. The resulting blend of Southwestern heritage and modern aesthetics defines the hotel, from the colors (crimson, gold and gray) and materials (local stone, tile, wood and copper) to artful architectural touches, like floating ceiling panels and floor-to-ceiling windows. Designer Kellie Sirna of Studio 11 Design points to the collection of Barry Goldwater photographs on display, noting the hotel is “a showcase for Scottsdale’s creative community.” You don’t have to be a creative, however, to appreciate the hotel’s 177 guest rooms, cozy lobby library and serene rooftop lounge where sunset views are best enjoyed poolside. hilton.com

MEET THE MAKER LEVI CHRISTIANSEN

SCENE

DESIGN

Furniture design seems to be Levi Christiansen’s destiny. Not only does his work history include stints with Crate & Barrel and Tuft & Needle, but also his mother revealed that an oracle once told her that Christiansen came from another realm. This idea clicked for Christiansen, who has vivid recollections of lucid dreams he’d had as a child. Whether Christiansen believes these are memories or dreams is up for debate, but the claim did spur him on to turn those images into his latest collection, “Shapes From Home.” Encompassing a chair, sofa, table, shelf and side table, the otherworldly collection is

crafted from decidedly terrestrial materials, such as walnut, wool bouclé and marble. Next up? A spring collection that will feature new product categories and explore a broader range of shapes, materials, colors and textures. levichristiansen.com Your work is both aesthetic and functional. Your role is both entrepreneur and artist. How do you reconcile these innate dichotomies? I find the collision of the subjective and objective endlessly fascinating. I think the objective nature of functionality is liberating. It gives the project a direction. If the chair is comfortable, it’s comfortable. If it’s not, it’s not. I like the honesty that comes with that. What are your favorite materials to work with? I love working with natural materials. I feel like they root humans to who we are and where we came from. We’ve been using wood, stone, alloy and leather for eons, so I believe we’re inherently connected to them, and experiencing them enriches our lives. That being said, I think each material has its own value because of its capabilities and limitations. What would be your dream project? I’d really love to do a full-scale design package for a boutique hotel and to make the hotel itself a destination. I’d also like to do a public art installation in Iceland or Mexico City or the desert. And I’d be interested in working with a brand like Hem. I like its approach to manufacturing and materials.

IN GOOD TASTE With a little ingenuity and a lot of design talent, the recently opened Campo Italian Bistro & Bar proves it’s possible to reinvent even a shopping center restaurant into something captivating. Or, perhaps more accurately, it is Trina Boyd who proves this. The designer was brought on to help reconceptualize the restaurant formerly known as Stratta (the two Michelin Star chef Alex Stratta is still there, along with Jeremy Pacheco of Lon’s at The Hermosa.) Boyd hand-painted 26 existing pendant lights, applied and polished the Venetian plaster, stained the wood trim and moldings, and even crafted the menu boards. Beyond that, Boyd sought to incorporate both nostalgic and modern elements within the space. Hence the antique Italian candelabras bookended by modern round mirrors in the dining room and the abstract art showcased inside ornate, antique gold frames. Other notable details include a lush patio space infused with plants and bamboo shades and custom, stylized mosaic wallpaper on the dining room wall. The effect is layered and textured but still airy and light, a distinctive homage, in other words, to both Scottsdale and Italy. campoitalian.com

Well & Good

“Most of us spend 90 percent of our lives indoors, and two-thirds of that is in our homes,” says designer Tamara Magel. “Yet very few of us consider the impact on our well-being.” It’s a staggering and pertinent statistic that has inspired Magel and others to make wellness a cornerstone of their design philosophies: How can we build a house that not only looks good but also creates a sense of peace, beauty, security and comfort? For Magel, this started with adopting a 10-step healthy living approach. “A truly healthy home goes beyond clean materials; it incorporates our basic human needs for light, clean air and food, a quiet environment and a peaceful atmosphere,” she explains. In her work, this translates to non-toxic and eco-friendly paints, natural stone and elements (water, clay and grasses), natural

light sources and feng shui. “I tend to use less furniture and larger pieces to create ease of flow from room to room,” she says. “I start with symmetry and add strategically placed organic curves.” Symmetry is also key for architect Don Ruggles, an idea he explores in his book Beauty, Neuroscience & Architecture, where he maintains that the most fundamental geometric pattern is the three-point facial pattern—two eyes and a mouth. What may seem like an abstract concept for the home is actually quite relevant: “The three-bythree pattern occurs over and over again in architecture and art,” says Ruggles. “Your brain will intuitively process it in an efficient way, which creates less stress and more rest.” The architect mentions the classic fireplace set up, in which the firebox opening is the center, and the mantel forms the upper left

and upper right of the design. Notice the pattern once, and you’ll see it everywhere: a headboard with two nightstands; the kitchen range and hood framed by cabinets; a front door surround; and so on. In California, architect Jennifer Hoppel is championing beauty and sustainability. With her firm, Burdge Architects, she just completed the first carbon-neutral luxury estate in Malibu, aptly named Zero One. “You don’t have to sacrifice design or luxury to achieve a structure that is good for you and the environment,” she says, noting the residence’s intentional siting, outdoor courtyard, sustainable garden, FSCcertified wood and even its less sexy (but no less important) ventilation system that promotes healthy air. “Being green is not this big, scary endeavor,” says Hoppel. “It’s attainable. It’s the way of the future.”

Past Perfect ARTISTRY AND ANCIENT TECHNIQUES COMBINE TO CREATE FURNITURE THAT STANDS THE TEST OF TIME.

Father-son duo Philip and Kelvin LaVerne often buried their works in special soil, which would age the metal and give it the appearance of antiquity, like the piece shown here.

LUXESOURCE.COM

It’s been more than 30 years since the last piece of furniture left Philip LaVerne Galleries, but the demand for the richly detailed tables, consoles and cabinets has only grown. This wouldn’t surprise their creators, a father-and-son team who knew they were crafting pieces with an enduring appeal even as they made them. Philip LaVerne and his son, Kelvin, were able to use their prodigious artistic gifts to create sculptural bronze and pewter pieces prized by designers and collectors. Their story begins in the late 1800s when Philip’s father, Max, immigrated to Brooklyn from Eastern Europe. “Max was a muralist, and he painted the ceilings of lobbies and churches,” says Evan Lobel, the owner of Lobel Modern NYC and co-author of a forthcoming book about the LaVernes. “When Philip was a child, Max would take him to the library, open an art book and ask his son to copy the images there. From an early age, Philip had a great talent and appreciation for art.” Those skills and inclinations were passed to Kelvin who, after graduating from art school in the 1950s, joined his father in creating one-of-a-kind pieces and selling them in a Midtown Manhattan showroom. The surfaces of their furniture frequently carry vignettes

weeks in soil the artists described as coming from the “Far East,” allowing it to oxidize and develop colors. The LaVernes monitored the process, encouraging hues with chemicals and setting them with wax when they achieved the desired shade. When unearthed, they would freeze or torch surfaces to develop patina or brightness. “The LaVernes were really advanced for their time. Their techniques, which they said were inspired by ancient practices, were never divulged,” says Merrill. “They were essentially painting with bronze and pewter, doing things that aren’t easily copied.” In 1987, Kelvin closed the studio doors and took up photography. But, more than three decades later, the LaVerne legacy continues to grow. According to Darin Geise, owner of Coup D’Etat, the singular nature of the work explains its enduring popularity. “People have a new appreciation for LaVerne pieces, and they are having a moment,” he says. Lobel agrees, noting: “They used to run magazine ads calling their pieces the ‘antiques of the future’—and they were absolutely right.”

Current prices for LaVerne pieces, like the rare Tao Cabinet (below) and a table from their first series focused on historical civilizations (left), bear out the statement. Todd Merrill notes recent auctions that have seen LaVerne works command top dollar. “In early 2000, Sotheby’s sold a Bathers cabinet for $90,000,” he notes. “If you had one today, you could ask whatever you wanted for it.”

LaVerne Everlasting DESIGNERS ON TODAY’S APPEAL OF THESE VINTAGE PIECES. “ At once avant-garde and traditional, a LaVerne work is always a fantastic focal point to any interior. The burnished bronze and verde gris patina adds a touch of deceptive antiquity and the plateaux quietly reveal a bas-relief scene akin to the face of an antique coin.” –JON DE LA CRUZ

“ W hat drew me to their furnishings is that they can work anywhere—either in a traditional or a modern interior. They are just as beautiful in either setting.” –JENNIFER COHLER MASON

“ T he craftsmanship of a LaVerne piece is amazing. Every detail is elegantly articulated and every time you study it, you see something new. You have to wonder, how did they do it?” –JACK LEVY

depicting life in ancient civilizations or scenes from mythology. “They were a very intellectual family,” notes Lobel. “They were interested in history, religion and music. Their designs were inspired by the subjects they loved deeply.” Their top-secret techniques created a look that’s immediately recognizable. Todd Merrill of Todd Merrill Studio describes the process in his book, Modern Americana: Studio Furniture from High Craft to High Glam, as a multistep endeavor involving hand carving a design in bronze and overlaying that with thin layers of pewter and more bronze. After that, a piece would be buried for six

NATURE-NODDING GREENS ARE THE ORDER OF THE DAY. GARDEN CLUB “Green is my favorite color in all areas of my life,” shares Chicago-based designer Alexandra Kaehler, who accordingly envisioned her pantry as an emerald jewel box. Leaning into her home’s leafy setting, Kaehler selected Benjamin Moore’s Essex Green, favoring a high-gloss finish over lacquer for the character of its brushstrokes. “I love the concept of bringing greenery inside,” continues the designer, noting that clients are increasingly sharing in her penchant. “After being stuck inside our houses, I think people are extra hungry for an outdoor connection, and translating that idea indoors visually is really comforting.” alexandrakaehler.com

INTO THE WOODS In a surprise to designer Marie Flanigan, Harry Potter spurred a chic color scheme— specifically, the series’ Forbidden Forest, which Flanigan’s young client requested her bedroom elicit. “Her inspiration was a lush, deep wood, and we used a moody palette to execute that,” Flanigan says. After reviewing four kindred paint samples (her own best practice), the designer opted for Sherwin-Williams’ Rocky River, pulling its strong saturation across the trim and ceiling. “Evoking nature breaks the divide between the indoors and outside,” she explains. “Here, the green envelops you and makes you feel like you’re sleeping among the trees.” marieflanigan.com

Maximalist color has gone mainstream in recent years, and the notion of “neutral” has evolved in turn. Just ask designer Nina Magon, who saw designing a bedroom at the 2021 Kips Bay Palm Beach Decorator Showhouse (top) as an opportunity to show the world that pink can be just as restful as the usual suspects. “Color is so important right now because it elicits emotions,” she muses, adding of Benjamin Moore’s Rosy Tan, “we wanted soft and cozy, and I think we nailed it.” Designer Stephanie Sabbe credits the success of this color family as a neutral canvas to its natural connotations. In her clients’ Nashville multipurpose room (bottom left), she used Benjamin Moore’s Pumice Stone, which nods to a sunbaked desert. Beyond sea and sky, “anything in earth tones is calming,” she insists. “For everyday living, surrounding yourself with fresh colors like these brings happiness,” chimes in designer Melanie Turner, who outfitted her clients’ Atlanta living room (bottom right) in Benjamin Moore’s golden Windswept Canyon. After decades of greige living, designers and clients are in agreement: dusty shades of peach, mauve, rust and rose offer a thrilling alternative.

Stormy beginnings: Thirteen years ago, Alex Geriner, founder of furniture company Doorman, discovered an old cypress door that had been salvaged from Hurricane Katrina. Inspired, he repurposed it into a bed. Do the hustle: Geriner began selling other repurposed pieces, and soon, “It became this fun side hustle,” he says. Five years later, he fully committed to the company. Thinking global, staying local: Doorman is rooted in the Crescent City, but focuses on the bigger picture. “Home is more than just four walls and the roof. It’s the planet that we stand on,” he says. Beyond recycling: Geriner pivoted from repurposing old pieces (“reclaimed wood is hard to find these days,” he notes) to broader environmental initiatives such as working with nearby lumber mills that sustainably harvest trees and turning to renewable energy. “Solar power is about 80 to 90 percent of our production energy,” Geriner adds. Modern history: “We pay homage to the style of New Orleans,” says Geriner, “but we’re bringing it into the 21st century.”

BLACK CROW STUDIOS Long Beach, California

Ahead of the curve: When Tracy Hiner launched Black Crow Studios, an art-driven custom wallpaper company, she set the path for the digitally printed mural companies that would follow in her footsteps. Doing more: “I was disillusioned with the luxury design industry,” she says. “Things happening in the world weren’t being addressed.” So Hiner started donating 20 percent of her Caliber Collection proceeds to a gun buy-back program. Rebellious streak: “I started thinking I could do this with all my collections,” she says. In 2019 the designer launched Rebel with a Cause, which she describes as a way to keep making art while making a difference. No limits: Hiner donates 50 percent of her personal profits to a range of charities. Each of her wallpaper collections is dedicated to a different cause, including justice programs, inner city arts and animal rescue. “I found charities that mean something to me,” she says. “I want to make the biggest impact.”

DUCHATEAU Soul searchers: In 2006, Benjamin Buzali and Misael Tagle started talking. They had noticed the difference between aged European hardwood floors versus that of new stained wood. “There’s a cannon to wood that’s changed over time,” explains Patrick Bewley, vice president of marketing. “There’s a soul to it.” Soon the luxury flooring company, DuChateau, was born. Thinking differently: DuChateau uses a combination of smoking, water bath and hand-scraping techniques, which not only creates the desired aged-inplace look, but it’s also sustainable. “We’ve always stayed away from formaldehyde and products with emissions,” explains Bewley. “And we’ve never used wood that’s illegally harvested.” Upping the ante: The company’s DuGood Initiative followed suit a decade later. “We were heartsick by the California wildfires,” says Bewley. In a partnership with the National Forest Foundation, DuChateau plants one tree for every floor sold. A portion of those trees goes to forests impacted by the wildfires. Fierce ambition: “We’ve planted more than 25,000 trees,” says Bewley. “Sustainability is our core value.”

MARBLED MARVELS Michigan-based maker Erika Stefanutti, founder of Parvum Opus, describes her hand-marbled paper obelisks, architectural models and shadow boxes as “aesthetically pleasing collector’s objects fit for a Wunderkammer.” Inspired by the Grand Tour era when travelers would acquire mementos from far-away places, the objets are a testament to how tangible items act as visual reminders of memorable experiences while also celebrating the spirit of handmade craft. EXISTENTIAL EXPRESSION Like many creatives before him, fashion designer-turned-artist Rogan Gregory looked to the female being as muse for his “Fertility Form” series. The stainless steel and bronze sculptures—nestled in an antique velvet-lined cabinet from ABC Home—are made of multiple parts stacked together and represent the many different cycles of life. These pieces, along with the salt & pepper shaker set (bottom center), exemplify Gregory’s focus on lines, proportion and asymmetrical harmony. r-and-company.com; abchome.com

NATURAL WONDERS En masse or on their own, Creel and Gow’s Stone and Mineral Spheres captivate, as do the many other exotic finds in the Upper East Side’s treasure-trove storefront. Ranging from rock crystal and zebra agate to green fluorite and orange calcite, each sphere is mounted on custom brass stands in varying heights. Seen here in an oak cabinet from antique purveyor Olde Good Things, the colorful, solid globes beg to be collected and arranged. creelandgow.com; ogtstore.com

ALL AGLOW From the classic Hurricane to the towering Leech Bowl—named after the medicinal crawler the vessels were designed to hold in British apothecaries in the 18th and 19th centuries— KRB owner Kate Rheinstein Brodsky commissioned these eye-catching glass forms in vibrant colors (shown here in amber, amethyst and brilliant blue) to delight modern collectors. Perched on the Leech Bowl is a papier-mâché snake by artist Mark Gagnon, and all objects rest atop a midcentury wood cabinet from Olde Good Things. krbnyc.com; ogtstore.com

BEGUILING BLOOMS Elizabeth Hayt’s whimsical floral creations stem from the natural world, yet nod to escapism, Surrealism and Art Nouveau influences. A single vintage wingback chair from the 1950s, Mexico City, was in need of restoration, and Designer wished to have a second chair created to match. The original chair was completely stripped down to frame and re-crafted, broken areas on base were repaired and re-finished. A second (new) chair was custom fabricated to create a matched pair, with hand-crafted hardwood frame and custom hand-shaped legs and low stretcher with ebonized finish. Both chairs received new custom upholstery, using the finest craftsmanship and materials.

The Cultivated Kitchen A TAILORED SPACE DESIGNED FOR FUNCTIONALITY IS THE ULTIMATE LUXURY. W R I T T E N A N D P R O D U C E D BY K AT H R Y N G I V E N

BATH + KITCHEN LIVING

BON APPÉTIT “This is a legitimate cook’s kitchen, but it doesn’t necessarily look like one,” explains Harrison Design’s Karen Ferguson of the area she designed for a serious Atlanta-based home chef. With the client’s wish list in hand—sous vide, induction cooktop, steam oven, compost bin and more—Ferguson set about understanding how her client would use these features to deliver a dream kitchen.

LUXESOURCE.COM

The design scheme started with a dynamic quarter-figured sycamore wood wall, which conceals appliances like the refrigerator, freezer and juice bar. To warm up the space and continue the organic feel, Ferguson opted for an oak island with delicate walnut dovetail details and a handsome butcher block. She added walnut hardware throughout for cohesiveness. Varying the materials palette, the designer incorporated patinated metal for the hood, cabinetry and backsplash, which also hides a storage compartment.

But the pièce de resistance is a custom glass panel flanking the range that features gold wallpaper and fabric on the backside— a decorative focal point in the room. Notes of rose gold and brass in the fittings and finishing details balance the gray tones and brighten up the space. Ferguson’s best advice for a flawless kitchen is to ensure client conversations about functionality happen upfront. “Tell me how you plan to live and cook in the space, and then I can show you how to use it beautifully,” she says. harrisondesign.com

In an Atlanta kitchen, Harrison Design’s Karen Ferguson worked with Block & Chisel on the cabinetry and included Fusion Blue Quartzite on the countertops. A Wolf range, rose gold Dornbracht faucets and Lutron shades complete the look.

SILVIA FRIGERIO, Managing Director “For me, the key word is ‘tailor-made,’ which is something I come back to every time I design a kitchen. When working on this Los Angeles project, I requested a list of the appliances the homeowners use daily, as they are avid cooks, and then incorporated pocket doors to conceal small appliances, double ovens and a coffee machine. The result is both sculptural and modern.” boffi.com

MARY DIMICHIN, Senior Designer “The range wall is a focal point in this Long Island, New York, kitchen, so we selected walnut drawer fronts and polished metal details to encourage the eye to that area. Wood is a nice contrast to the white cabinetry without being too harsh. Don’t overlook these finishing touches, along, of course, with storage!” bakesandkropp.com

“Today’s designs are about fluid spaces that flow from the kitchen into other living areas, as open floor plans remain a popular request from clients. This Arizona space reflects the ideology of the kitchen as part of the dining room and living room. Modern clean lines with handless cabinetry and fully integrated appliances that look like cabinetry create a seamless appearance.” snaidero-usa.com

LIVING

“Entertaining has become more intimate and personal,” says artist-designer Sarah Espeute, whose hand-embroidered table linens depict playful tableaus of shared meals. “Above all,” she adds, “there’s a desire for novelty now—a wish to travel through the table—hence the word ‘tablescape!’ ”

REPORT THE LIVING

TABLE TALK

Artist Sarah Espeute doesn’t take setting the table too seriously. Just look to the chorus of snails, turnips, wildflowers and the like, which flit between hand-stitched place settings on her whimsical linens. From a shared studio space in Marseille, France, Espeute embroiders these convivial scenes on thrifted, often century-old bed sheets conceived anew.

For Espeute, the joy in her chosen medium lies in its dualisms—her linens are nostalgic and modern; dressy and lighthearted; decorative and utilitarian. She admires blurred boundaries in design. “Multidisciplinary artists with a broad practice have reinforced the idea that there is no limit in creation,” she says, citing the work of painters like Cy Twombly and Raoul Ubac, and the architecture of Luis Barragán and Carlo Scarpa, amongst others, as inspirations. While a multidisciplinary artist herself (Espeute designs furniture and paints), there’s something about the handmade character of embroidery— and the act of gathering around the dining table—that comforts and captivates her imagination. “I think embroidery really touches people,” she muses, adding, “it’s wonderfully sentimental.” oeuvres-sensibles.fr

LUXESOURCE.COM

table talk photos: courtesy sarah espeute. french lessons photos: matthieu salvaing, courtesy rizzoli. the huntress photo: sofi perazzo.

Like many strokes of ingenuity, Oeuvres Sensibles (meaning “sensitive objects”), Espeute’s line of tablecloths, runners and napkins, was born from necessity. Coveting unique cushions and curtains for her own home, she turned inward, resourcefully picking up an embroidery needle—and the stars aligned. When a friend gauged her interest in creating a tabletop textile for an art exhibition, “I imagined a trompe l’oeil meal and things took off from there!” she recalls.

Dior Maison artistic director Cordelia de Castellane has catalogued her flair for hosting in a new book: Life In A French Country House: Entertaining For All Seasons (Rizzoli). Previewing the bounty of inspiration within, here, de Castellane shares two of her signature moves for a sui generis fête. On linens. I love to order embroidered vintage tablecloths on eBay and dye them in my washing machine. How cool is it to have formal linens dyed a shocking hot pink? Contradiction keeps design interesting.

A tabletop vignette displays de Castellane’s maximalist tendencies. “The Saint-Louis crystal glasses and Clichy vases set the stage for this winter table—I even cheated by dipping certain flowers in dye!” she notes.

THE HUNTRESS

“My grandmother used to set the most impeccable tables,” recalls Federika Longinotti Buitoni. “To this day, I remember the gorgeous ceramic parrots she used as centerpieces, and the homemade clementine ice cream that she served on perfectly carved clementine skin. I learned never to underestimate the details, as this is often all people remember.” With such early-seeded reverence for the art of entertaining, the fact that Longinotti Buitoni grew up to found Collecto—a retailer dedicated to aggregating the finest tabletop wares from around the globe—is apropos. Traversing Italy for delicate glassware, France for Limoges porcelain and Mexico for handmade pottery, Longinotti Buitoni is building a veritable melting pot of luxury, artisan-driven homewares, with a new service wing offering bespoke, soup-to-nuts dining and kitchenware curation. Grandmother, we posit, would approve. collectoworld.com

On decor. You don’t need flowers to create an exciting centerpiece. In summer, I’ll fashion a runner out of ripe tomatoes only. For the holidays, I’ll fill crystal bowls with colorful candies. And there is no more beautiful focal point than candles—lots and lots of them in different shapes and sizes.

REPORT THE LIVING

ART OF THE EDIT STYLIST MIEKE TEN HAVE DISHES ON ENTERTAINING AU COURANT.

Trick for charming guests: My mother always serves a little bit of soup in a teacup or finger bowl as an hors d’oeuvre. I think it’s such a clever and a fun way to repurpose tableware that isn’t used very often anymore—and more interesting than cheese and crackers! Finds you’re crushing on now: I collect a lot of antique plates, but my contemporary Alberto Pinto faux bois chargers are a favorite. While a classic motif, the scale makes them look more modern than grand-mère. I almost always reach for colored glassware—amethyst, emerald and aquamarines are my go-tos. And nobody does unique block prints like Gregory Parkinson. His colors are so luscious and interesting. Always in your pantry: I have tapers in every color of the rainbow. I mix them up seasonally and according to the table’s scheme. Hosting faux pas: Serving dinner too late. On Mieke’s holiday table: Gregory Parkinson’s hand-loomed pine zest ikat napkins (top), Pinto Paris’ faux bois buffet plate (center), Nason Moretti’s Idra twisted striped water glass (above) and vintage crystal-and-sterling swan salt and pepper wells from Chairish (right).

LUXESOURCE.COM

Best hostess gift: Not arriving early! Go-to for mixing things up: It’s fun to dine in an unexpected area, like a little card table in the living room. Moving locations introduces a feeling of novelty and excitement.

PORTRAIT: DONNA DOTAN. GOBLET: COURTESY ARTEMEST. PLATE: JACQUES PÉPION. NAPKINS: COURTESY GREGORY PARKINSON. SALT SHAKERS: COURTESY CHAIRISH. DREAM WEAVING PHOTO: COURTESY MALAIKA.

Advice for a spirited table: I focus on the mix of patterns and styles more than anything else. I have a collection of tableware, textiles and decorative objects (fanciful salt cellars, for example) and I love to use them in interesting combinations, particularly mixing aesthetic eras and cultures. I don’t like when tables are too “pretty.” There should be contrast.

Atop Malaika’s hand-printed Carnation place mat and flanked by the delicately embroidered Julia napkin rests a new pottery plate produced for the brand by artisans in the village of Tunis in Fayoum.

DREAM WEAVING

“From the outset, we were determined to create a business model with social impact,” says Goya Gallagher, who alongside Margarita Andrade, co-founded Malaika—a Cairo-based atelier championing traditional Egyptian crafts. At launch, the company covered embroidery tuition for local women, but the mission expanded with their retail success. In 2018, the pair opened Threads Of Hope, a free trade school, which trains community members for Malaika employment.

In both motif and materiality, the brand’s offerings—from silk-screened place mats to intricately stitched napkins and handmade pottery—celebrate the abundance of Egypt’s natural and cultural history. Ultimately, they hope this cycle of preserving heritage craft extends beyond the hands that create, down to the consumer. Notes Gallagher, “every piece in our collection has been carefully designed as a timeless family heirloom to pass on for generations to come.” malaikalinens.com

Epic Arizona design is achieved when skilled artisans blend traditional forms with modern amenities that complement the unique landscape. Specializing in transitional designs, Capstone Homes builds with Arizona’s cultural heritage, natural environment and innovative spirit in mind. “In Flagstaff, we are known for mixing the Craftsman cabin aesthetics with mountain modern architecture to bring state-of-the-art accents and materials to our warm, nostalgic designs,” French adds. “While in Prescott, we offer customizable, single-story floor plans with varied elevations of traditional, modern and farmhouse that provide high design on a more modest scale.”

At the heart of epic Arizona design are its stunning landscapes. Capturing and enhancing that natural beauty in exciting new ways are Russell Greey and Wendell Pickett of Greey Pickett, Scottsdale’s leading landscape architecture firm. “In the past, Arizona was a bit conservative in its architectural styles, but that has changed,” Greey says. “Today’s modern desert aesthetic is inspiring us to create broader and more beautiful plant palettes.” When taking on a new project, Greey and Pickett carefully consider the site, the architecture and their client’s visions before conceiving a boldly original landscape design. “We’ve prided ourselves on never having a signature look,” Greey adds. “This allows us to design everything from minimalist to traditional to organic desert environments that are unique, alluring and lasting, and that allow people who experience them to have a superlative sense of discovery.”

Greey Pickett was founded on the ideals of cooperation. “We have never thought of ourselves as bosses,” Greey says. “Our belief in collaborative mentorship has allowed us to build a great staff who have no limitations on their design roles. We want them to be involved from start to finish so they can see our collective work come to life.”

From the creative energy to the stunning scenery and sense of community, Flagstaff offers an irresistible quality of life. Jay Reitz, owner of Reitz Builders, had been a contractor in New York City for 20 years when he met his wife on an Arizona mountain biking trip and never looked back. “I was doubly captivated,” Reitz says. “So, I made the move west to build a family and start my business, and we are proud to be a part of the fabric of the Flagstaff community.” Today, Reitz is laser-focused on the Flagstaff area. “Choosing to be exclusively local has made us a strong part of our community,” he shares. “Some of our best projects began with a conversation outside of a coffee shop or at a trailhead.” Flagstaff’s unmatched outdoor lifestyle also inspires Reitz in his work. “We know the joys of high desert living and how to build epic homes that fit.”

Conceiving an architecturally significant home that is in perfect harmony with its unique landscape is a key element in epic Arizona design. Ron Robinette and his highly skilled team at Robinette Architects have an outstanding reputation for doing just that, earning them an impressive roster of devoted clients in Tucson and beyond. “The majority of our staff are Tucson natives who bring an innate feel for creating spaces that “live well” year-round in our beautiful, but challenging environment,” Robinette says. “Because we specialize in custom homes, it is imperative that we form close working relationships with our clients so that we can realize their wants, needs and goals. Additionally, we make frequent visits to their homesites. This allows us to understand the features and characteristics of the land on which they’ve chosen to build a new life and inspires us creatively.”

• Describe your design aesthetic. We don’t subscribe to a signature style. Rather, all of our homes have creative indoor space that reflects our client’s unique lifestyles, while responding to the natural outdoor setting. •W hat are some design challenges you face in the desert? Not only do our homes have to meet our clients’ design goals, but they also have to respond to the Sonoran Desert’s harsh sun, extreme temperature swings and rugged terrain. • How would you define epic desert design? It is based on a number of concepts including indoor/ outdoor living, capturing views, passive energy savings, water harvesting and healthy home and alternative energy concepts. But most importantly, great desert design is defined by each client’s personality.

e were just done with snow,” says Kim Balaschak of the journey she made with husband Jim from their Russian home to the sunnier, warmer climate of Arizona. After more than a decade in Moscow, where Jim served as a country manager for a U.S. corporation, the couple set up camp in Philadelphia until the allure of the Sonoran Desert proved too great to resist. A chance invitation to play golf initially brought the Balaschaks to the desert, but it was a newly opened section of the development—with dirt roads and not one house in sight—that really caught their eye. “It sits up high, which makes this a fantastic building site,” Jim says. The gently sloping location afforded the couple a view of Pinnacle Peak, the surrounding mountains and, after sunset, the lights of Scottsdale. “We took one look at it and said, ‘This is it.’ ” “They had a strong sense of how they wanted to live, from a public and private standpoint,” observes architect Andy Byrnes, who, along with project manager Ian Wolfersteig, used a combination of glass, steel, wood and concrete to turn the gently sloping Scottsdale property into the Balaschak’s dream residence. The structure they conceived embraces nature, complete with board-formed, packed-in-place concrete exterior walls covered in a vintage Kynar-coated metal that “appear to come up out of the desert,” says Byrnes. Inside, a decorative wall was created by stacking quarter-inch glass to give it a fluid, translucent look. It is of a piece with the front door, made of hot-rolled steel and glass that aligns with the exterior’s horizontal cladding. The result exhibits a certain chic simplicity, accentuated by a thin, floating butterfly roof that looks as if it’s held up by glass. “The house is intentionally modest,” notes the architect. “That was important in terms of scale. It’s low to the ground and has a desert palette.” Sliding doors open the great room out to the courtyard and, as Byrnes puts it, “just invites that pool right into the living room.” The whole idea of the house, he says, was “grounding the desert and bringing it into that courtyard.” To continue this feeling of immersion, Byrnes

turned to landscape architect Stephen Bardorf, who brought in a variety of cactus and succulents—slipper plants, cardon cactus and aloe Hercules among them. The goal was to lend the outdoor living spaces a garden atmosphere and, as Bardorf says, “add an alternative compositional quality to the landscape, adjacent to the architecture.” When it comes to interiors, the Balaschaks lean toward European midcentury influences and designer Jessica Ruiz found that much of the clean-lined, minimalist furnishings the couple already owned worked well in the sophisticated space. So, she simply augmented the collection, adding pieces as needed. The bigger question was how to display the couple’s extensive art collection, which numbers some 100-plus pieces—a blend of Soviet realism and contemporary Russian artists and photographers. “We were drawn to depictions of life in the former Soviet Union,” Kim says. “They gave us an insight into what life might have been like in the country that we were then calling home.” Ruiz worked side-by-side with Kim in the art placement, ensuring that each piece the couple brought to the new abode felt right. “The art was broad reaching,” says Byrnes. “But we just knew, once they moved in, we would find homes for all their pieces.” In the glass-steel-and-concrete great room, the couple felt that “the architecture is the artwork,” says Kim. So, they opted against hanging pieces there, choosing instead to turn a hallway on the west side of the home into a long gallery for much of their collection. The entire crew agrees that it’s not just paintings, photographs or sculptures that serve as art in the dwelling. “We had a fun day spending time at the stone quarry picking out the material for the kitchen backsplash,” Byrnes says. “Eventually we all fell in love with the most expensive piece of stone in the place. We convinced ourselves that it was a piece of art in itself.” The same could be said for the entire property. “It’s not too big a house, it’s not too small a house,” Jim concludes. “Every room has its function and use.” Adds Kim, “I get up in the morning and walk from our bedroom and the light coming in is so special. I walk like I’m in a dreamland every day.”

Architect Andy Byrnes and project manager Ian Wolfersteig intentionally gave this Scottsdale abode a low profile, using a desert palette and easy-maintenance materials. The home’s exterior walls—made of concrete and covered in vintage siding by Metal Works, Inc.—exhibit a unique horizontal quality that complements the sprawling landscape.

rowsing real estate listings in other cities is pure escapist fun for most, but the breezy weekend activity changed everything for Austin residents and designers Heather Blue Harkovich and Scott Harkovich, who found themselves scrolling past the same Scottsdale adobe listing week after week. Finally, their burgeoning interest got the best of the couple, and they flew out to tour the home located near the base of Pinnacle Peak, snapping it up the same day. The home’s natural materials and classic Southwest-style architecture—authentic adobe walls, vigas-and-latillas ceilings and four fireplaces—made it well worth the effort it would require to bring it into the 21st century. “The house was in rough shape, but it had great bones, so we knew we could turn it into something special,” Heather says, noting that they have renovated several of their nine former homes. “We’ve learned there probably is no ‘forever home’ in our future.” Early in the project, the couple commissioned architect Lynn Tenney to draw up the plans. While he was drawn to the challenge, his initial gut instinct was to turn the job down. “Adobe is basically just mud bricks,” Tenney explains. “It’s very hard to structure.” Ultimately, however, he signed on and worked with builder Darryl Jones to enhance the home’s flow by strategically eliminating walls, converting a Jack-and-Jill powder room into a full bath and designing a new main bedroom addition—just a few of the many modifications. But changes didn’t mean doing away with the details that made the house special to begin with. The team repurposed the original front door into a courtyard entrance, for example, and its red brick floor pavers now cover the formerly gravel driveway. “We kept a lot of the original character, but we were able to bring it up to par to today’s standards,” Tenney notes. “The goal was to make it light and bright,” Heather says of their overarching plan. A new steel-and-glass front door floods the foyer with sunshine, which reflects off the white-painted

brick, wood ceilings and newly laid white French oak flooring that flow throughout the interior. Punctuating the light walls with darker touches— such as the entry’s black console table with nailhead trim in a Moroccan-inspired motif— “makes the house feel current but still classic,” she explains. “As a designer, I deal with colors all the time. It’s soothing to have a neutral palette. I like to pick a theme of two to three leading colors and use those throughout.” In the living room, white walls create a crisp backdrop for tailored sofas and a pair of steelframed leather chairs around a wood-burning fireplace (complete with a whimsical bronze fireplace screen made by the prior owner, a metal artist). “We wanted it to be very welcoming and comfortable—not too formal,” the designer says, pointing to the L-shaped settee in front of the corner window. “It has a view of Pinnacle Peak, so I thought it would be a great place to read or simply have a cup of coffee.” The neutral palette also defines the kitchen, which Heather enlarged by removing a wall that separated it from the adjacent dining room. Quartzite counters and a backsplash with a scalloped edge accent the painted taupe cabinetry and custom Sheetrock hood. “I wanted the hood to flow nicely and not be a standout,” the designer explains. When Heather did infuse other colors in the home, it was in thoughtful touches, such as the main bedroom suite, where periwinkle blue table lamps flank a white channel-tufted headboard covered in a performance linen. The furnishings play off of the navy blue draperies and abstract artwork in the same hue. The key, she adds, is ensuring the color flows. “Then at the end of the day, people walk in, and they can’t quite put their finger on one thing, but they just say the house feels really put together,” she explains. It was a lengthy renovation, so when Heather and Scott arrived in October, they planned their stay for the entire season. Right around the holidays, they realized they didn’t want to leave. So, they sold their Austin residence and relocated their business to the desert Southwest. “This home is true to my style,” says Heather. “Classic, chic and serene.”

The Harkoviches wanted to keep the character of the home, but update it for easier entertaining, so they removed the wall dividing the kitchen and dining spaces. “The dining room looks current and fresh, thanks to the Antelope carpet by Stark, the unique Bernhardt buffet covered with tarnished German silver and the Bernhardt wood dining table with white-plaster finish,” notes Heather.

ome people journal to process their feelings. Others meditate. Some may go for a hike. Jamilla Naji paints. “I’ll take whatever thing that’s going on inside that’s not so great and I’ll get it out,” she explains. “I purge my emotions.” This purge often translates into the most vibrant artworks. “Sometimes my sad things are my best work,” notes the Scottsdalebased artist. “If something’s troubling me, I’ll present it with a lot of colors and humor.” The color-drenched, often surreal images she paints feel at first glance like whimsical, complex fairy tales. Floating and falling figures mingle with oversize creatures, each radiating a hidden agenda. The hues Naji uses—rendered in oil paints across large, stretched-linen canvases and

wood panels—are also symbolic. Blues and purples often represent freedom; greens might mean new beginnings; yellow is for fun; pink symbolizes life, innocence and purity; and white is the color of mystery. With no formal art training, Naji is completely self-taught. She was first compelled to pick up a paintbrush more than 20 years ago after being inspired by a series of large paintings at a friend’s house. As her interest in art progressed, she used it as a way to escape dysfunction in her family life. She explored it further by creating a book of illustrations inspired by David Bowie songs. She began painting on wood panels while living near an Amish population in Ohio. After admiring their woodworking skills, she asked if they could build panels to act as a canvas. “I like the wood because it gives it more of a folk art feeling, and

I love folk art,” she says. “I get handmade panels because I want the work to feel like someone has already put energy into it.” Many of Naji’s paintings feature a recurring maritime theme depicting boats, fish, life buoys and other oceanic objects. “I love the ocean—it’s mysterious,” she says. “But I also think it’s a good theme if you want to have a lot of activities going on because the waves are going in all different directions, just like life.” In that vein, her most recent work is helping her process her daughter’s departure to college. “I’ve got her swimming away with little floaties on, even though she’s older,” Naji explains. “And I’m in a ship with my arms out and I’ve got a sail that’s all tattered and broken, with all the history of life. It’s hard, but I’m yelling at the sky, very happy—like I’m sailing away on this huge wave.”

“I paint stories that are fantasy, but a lot of my fantasy is based on real emotions,” says Jamilla Naji (opposite). She uses bright colors and humor in her deeply personal paintings such as Corazones de Papel (left), Pídeme la Luna and Battles and Blessings (bottom, left and right).

ne would expect a former fashion and food stylist to have an eye for design. But even Maria Mihaletos— who has traveled the world on shoots for a high-fashion magazine in her native South Africa— was surprised by her ability to envision every detail of her family’s new home in Scottsdale’s Silverleaf neighborhood. “I was so laser-focused with this house,” she says. “I don’t know how to explain it, but I would buy things knowing exactly where they would go once the house was done.” To hold these discoveries—which range from Greek icons and African artifacts to a two-story wallpaper mural— Maria imagined architecture defined by clean lines, strong connections to the outdoors and “lots of warmth in the layers and materials,” she notes. Finding an architecture professional who understood her concept—and how to sell it to a design review board partial to Spanish Colonial, Mediterranean and ranch hacienda styles— had proven difficult. That is, until she drove past a new Silverleaf house with a decidedly modern sensibility. “I loved the simplicity of the architecture and finishes and said, ‘This is who I want to talk to,’ ” Maria explains of residential designer Luis Antonio Bonilla. “I met with him and explained my vision, and the more I spoke, the more enthusiastic he got.” “When I get an architectural opportunity that is more on the modern side, it’s a dream come true because it allows for creativity,” says Bonilla. To suit Maria’s vision, he designed a structure with formal Mediterranean massing and symmetry, but distinctly modern steel pergolas and columns as well as floor-to-ceiling windows. At the entry, landscape architects Russell Greey and Clayton Miller emphasized these clean lines with a negative-edge water feature and the “simple, striking textures and forms” of deer grass, agaves and succulents arranged “in a minimalist, massplanting style,” Greey explains. “The first impression is that this is a different house,” Bonilla says. “The steel pergola at the front is not a typical covered porch; it creates a sense of compression, and then you open the door to the foyer and there’s this double-height space.” Similar processions of spaces repeat inside, culminating at the back of the house, where motorized pocket

doors vanish into the walls, uniting the interiors with a loggia and wood pool deck. “I wanted wood to be a recurring theme,” Maria says of the material that also defines the kitchen, which she designed in collaboration with bulthaup Scottsdale’s principal, Robert Moric. Here, a walnut countertop and cabinetry wall provide a rich counterpoint to champagne-colored anodized-aluminum island cabinets. These, in turn, complement the limestone floors and furnishings in adjacent rooms. Moric likens the effect to the concentric ripples that form when a rock is dropped into water. “The kitchen becomes that rock, setting the tone of materials, textures and colors that start filling in the rest of the architecture,” he says. “It creates layers that are quite fascinating.” Maria’s modern furnishings (some of which she acquired from as far away as South Africa, while others she purchased locally) also display a similar depth. “They have these beautiful warm textures, with sides and backs and legs in different materials,” she says. “Our bed has a leather-clad headboard and integrated walnut drawers. The living room coffee table is glass on top and marble underneath, with a woven-leather ottoman tucked alongside.” Equally eye-catching are sculptural fixtures, installed in consultation with lighting designer Claudia Kappl Joy of CLL Concept Lighting Lab, who also served as a close adviser to Maria in everything from art framing to fabric selections. When the dining room’s crystal pendants and a massive roll of suspension cable arrived without assembly instructions, “Claudia’s team spent hours doing mock-ups of how they would hang and align it, then we spent a day knotting and tying,” Maria recalls. The lighting designer also devised the swagged installation of the main bathroom’s amorphous, blown-glass pendant lights, which initially hung high in the room’s clerestory. “We encouraged Maria to engage the whole height of the space,” Kappl Joy says, which they achieved by letting the pendants drop down over the freestanding tub. “Although the homeowners have chosen such exquisite things, they do not shy away from really living in the space,” Kappl Joy notes. “They use it, they love it, they play, they entertain, and that is really exciting to see.” As Maria herself says, “This house is not a monument or a mausoleum. We live in this house.”

Homeowner Maria Mihaletos had the image of Zulu Girl, a 1951 painting by Vladimir Tretchikoff, made into a two-story wallpaper mural to preside over the foyer. A trio of Foscarini’s lacquered-aluminum suspension lamps is strategically hung from the slatted-oak ceiling to cast carefully orchestrated light and shadows on the walls. The handmade African bed is from an artist’s market in Hartbeespoort, South Africa.

Motorized pocket doors slide into the walls, uniting indoor and outdoor living areas. A Flexform low-slung sectional and leather-backed armchairs surround a unique coffee table configuration composed of a Minotti glass-and-marble coffee table as well as a Flexform wovenleather ottoman and pair of marbletopped side tables.

BOWMAN DESIGN GROUP

F

“I have always been amazed by the built environment and knew when I was very young that I wanted to design architecture.”

rom the iconic works of Frank Lloyd Wright and Josias Joesler to the present, Arizona is known for cutting-edge architecture that combines innovative designs with natural materials. As one of today’s architectural leaders, Dan Bowman applies those same ideals to his acclaimed luxury residential, small commercial and hospitality projects. “I have a passion for modern architecture that incorporates organic materials because natural textures and colors are imbued with the power to soften and enhance any design,” Bowman says. Growing up on a farm in Nebraska gave Bowman a love of the outdoors, a powerful work ethic and a

strong sense of stewardship, all of which are baked into Bowman Design Group, the Phoenix-based firm he founded in 2018. “I work hard to be a steward for my clients and their project,” he shares. “In many instances, the homes, buildings and spaces we are planning are the biggest investments they will make in their lives, so it is my duty to take care in all aspects of the design.” With his reputation for excellence well established, Bowman looks to the future with optimism: “As Bowman Design Group continues to move forward, I am excited to embrace new project markets and design styles. After all, if we are not moving forward, we will always stay in the same place.”

ON A PERSONAL NOTE What are three design rules you work by? First, if there is an amazing view, capture it. Next, natural light changes the way we experience the built environment, so bring it into a design as often as you can. Finally, treat all aspects of your designs as though they are on purpose. Which faraway destination inspires you most? Santorini, Greece. The buildings there have so many amazing colors, textures and materials, and are embedded against a mountain while overlooking the sea. What is your dream project? To design and own a boutique hotel and restaurant at a coastal winery. Being able to create every aspect of a guest’s experience, from the food and wine they enjoy to the views from their rooms and the memories they take home, sounds idyllic to me. If you weren’t an architect, you’d be a ... ? I would be a modern furniture designer and builder because there are so many ways to create what I consider to be functional art. Name three quick favorites. Food: A perfect filet. Season: Summer. Vacation spot: The next one.
