This issue of Luxe is essentially a love letter to the people who make design happen. In addition to our annual GOLD LIST, which recognizes talents from across the country who have had their projects featured in our pages the past year, we celebrate creative originators and innovators: a community and collective of people who are grounded in their craft and dedicated to pushing design forward. We thank all of you for imagining and enriching the homes we live in. As the rhythms of daily life begin to return, and the pandemic recedes into the rear view, I am hopeful that the meaningfulness of home, and the people who reimagine the spaces of our everyday life, will remain in our hearts and minds.

If the pandemic taught us anything, it’s the importance of making our homes as comfortable as possible. No wonder then that one of the pandemic’s bright spots—the launch of Neighbor—embraces both highdesign and community building. Based in Phoenix, the outdoor furnishings company is helmed by three veterans of Tuft & Needle who recognized the need for better alfresco living experiences. Their answer? Neighbor’s collection of modular and transitional furnishings that bring an indoor aesthetic to the great outdoors. The furniture is crafted from FSC-certified teak and a curated collection of Sunbrella fabrics. Neighbor currently offers one
comprehensive collection known as Haven, which consists of a fully modular sectional, ottoman, loveseat, sofa and chair. Other furnishings, like their dining set and coffee table, are available to complete the outdoor living experience. Neighbor is continuing to evolve their offerings with sustainability in mind. Late last year, the company introduced the Low Chair, a riff on the Adirondack chair made of recycled ocean- and landfill-bound plastic. And they are also teaming up with Sunbrella to create a custom line of fabrics so that, by 2023, all the company’s textiles will have a recycled component to them. A LA CARTE January marked the opening of the much-anticipated restaurant, Carcara, located in the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown. The ground-floor eatery is one of the final components of the hotel’s top-to-bottom renovation, and it serves as an ode to the Grand Canyon state. In addition to the locally sourced menu, Carcara nods again and again to the 5 C’s of Arizona in its design—think woven cotton textiles, copper accents and Cara Cara orange trees lining the 2,000-squarefoot patio. But there are subtler homages to the Sonoran setting, too. Consider the custom terrazzo floor, for example, which blurs the indoor-outdoor boundary. Or the wallcovering designed to look like rammed earth in a private dining area. On the patio, guests can cozy up next to the handcrafted fireplace, which is framed by a wood trellis and lemon vines. These details are eye catching, but the unequivocal centerpiece is the open dining room’s 14-foot treeinspired installation with glass and metal lanterns dangling from the canopy of “branches.” Arizona has never looked better. carcararestaurant.com

If you’ve driven along Phoenix’s Missouri Avenue between 12th and 16th Streets, you’ve likely noticed the proverbial new kid on the block. Known as The Frederick (or “The Fred”), it’s been hard to miss ever since Chantell Nighswonger and Kevin Cieszkowski took over. The husband-and-wife team spruced it up and reopened it as a courtyard-centric enclave of independent boutiques. The complex sits a little lower than the street, so that the bright white exterior catches your eye while the midcentury modern roofline forms a low-slung invitation to come inside. This labor of love is more than a shopping center. Its painstakingly restored (and updated) beauty, combined with its fiercely independent collection of women-owned businesses, make it a thoughtful addition to Phoenix’s traditional strip-mall culture. thefredphx.com What about The Fred resonated with you? CN: It really checked all the boxes. It had a courtyard. It had parking. It was in the same neighborhood as my boutique, Vida Moulin, and it wasn’t a strip mall. We also really loved the midcentury feeling.
Why did you preserve the building when it would’ve been easier and cheaper to knock it down and rebuild? CN: With so many original midcentury buildings being torn down all over Phoenix, we really wanted to keep the historic integrity of this building and have this gem restored for future generations to appreciate. It’s also how we came to the name of The Frederick, which honors the original architect who designed the building, Frederick Weaver. The Fred is home to nine boutiques and eateries, including Vida Moulin, Metalmark Fine Jewelry, Form Floral, Creative Kind and Mahalo Made. How would you describe its niche? CN: One of the things that Phoenix has always lacked is a grouping of businesses in one location. We really wanted to create a place where you could spend the afternoon. What’s next for you? KC: We’re developing a new retail center in Gilbert called The Murphy. It’s named after the man who brought the train to Gilbert, Frank Murphy. It’s loosely based, design-wise, on a train depot, and we’re working with the same architect, Christoph Kaiser, who helped us with The Frederick.
CHECK IN If the new year has you longing for an adventure, it’s time to head east. Santa Fe’s iconic Bishop’s Lodge recently wrapped up a seven-year renovation and restoration project to the tune of $75 million, and the effect is indulgent. Lead designer Mary Alice Palmer of HKS drew on her personal connection to Santa Fe and the property itself (she used to stay at Bishop’s Lodge as a child) as she juggled the sometimes-competing needs of luxury and authenticity. As a result, visitors can still enjoy the rustic glamour that twinkles about such features as the lodge’s oversize kiva fireplace and expansive terrace. But Palmer has added thoughtful updates too, like locally sourced artifacts and antiques. In the guest rooms, clean lines and bright neutrals balance traditional ceiling beams and heavy wood furnishings. When I was 12 years old, I began my career selling antiques from a stall in London’s Greenwich Market. It was the 1980s then, and Art Deco was the height of fashion. It was one of the first design periods that I studied, and from that, my passion grew. Because I came from a theatrical background—originally, I wanted to be an actor—it’s only natural that I would be drawn to a style so closely associated with Hollywood glamour. With the advent of cinema, Los Angeles boomed during the 1920s and 1930s, and extraordinary spaces, like the Cicada Club in downtown L.A. and the historic Sunset Tower hotel, were built. For me, the appeal of Art Deco lies in its association with decadence. The world had just come out of World War I, and there was reason to celebrate. People wanted drama and floridity. We left behind the Edwardian and Arts-and-Crafts periods, and turned almost instantly to this brand-new era symbolized by ornate geometric forms. Of all the Art Deco styles, I’m particularly fond of Egyptian Revival. It conjures the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, and with that, an air of adventure, travel and romance. In my work and in my own home, many Orientalist and Moroccan motifs blend with the geometric vibe and monochromatic palette of Art Deco. Recently, I drew inspiration from the period to inform a collection of inlaid stone and lacquer accessories for SV Casa. We did a series of beautiful cases that open into bars, inspired by Hermès and Louis Vuitton steamer trunks from the 1930s. They recall one of the first Art Deco pieces I ever bought: a 1920s alligator case, which makes me long for the time when travel was new. In those days, people used silver- and-gold jars in sleek cases for toiletries. We used to travel in such style! I’ve kept it with me throughout my journeys. It’s a great nod to my past, both in my dealing in objects of that era and my love of Art Deco itself. Martyn Lawrence Bullard on the steps leading to the pool and gardens of his Los Angeles home. I was born in Seoul, South Korea, but moved to Michigan when I was three. Most of my ideas about my home country came from my parents, who were passionate about collecting and preserving Korean art. One of my favorite early memories was flying to New York City with my mother. She was shopping for a scholar screen— an artwork meant to decorate the study of a Yangban (a scholar of the highest class). They depict items a Yangban might exhibit to show his refinement: books, a peony, ink brushes. My mother was also searching for folk art—colorful, informal paintings, often with suggestive subject matter. I learned then that there were two schools of Korean art: the school based on courtly formalities, and the folk art hung in the homes of merchants or shamans. Adolescent me became fascinated with folk art. Rabbits smoking pipes! Mountains in every color under the sun! The rainbow hanbok of young girls! To me, these visions were the heartbeat of traditional Korean art—and today, they inspire every inch of my design aesthetic.
Some people think decorating is about picking pretty fabrics, but it is rooted in soils far deeper than that. As I design this home, I think of all the people who have lived here over the last two centuries, my family tree that dates back 700 years, and my children who will carry the future— and who, I hope, will tell everyone’s story. Last year, I purchased a home in New York’s Hudson Valley: a classic Colonial in the most idyllic countryside setting. As I dreamt of how to decorate, my thoughts turned to my heritage. One project I’m working on is designing a wallpaper with Fromental, inspired by the papers out of East Asia, which were traded in the New World in the 17th century. I’ll be incorporating both the structure of courtly paintings and the brightness of folk art, all presented in a modern way.

Ever since I was a child on a farm in Indiana, fashion has been my obsession. I was the middle child of nine—the Jan Brady of our family, and sort of invisible. After seeing The Mary Tyler Moore Show, my dream became to live in a city in an apartment. At age 8, I made a pact that I would one day move to New York and do glamorous things with my life. We didn’t have a ton of money, but my mother had amazing style. She made a lot of our clothes—think: red-white-and-blue bell bottoms with matching shirts. Even at age 5, I was picky about what colors I wanted to wear, and I hated being dressed like my brothers—I wanted control! Growing up, I fell in love with magazines. I’d go down to the local newsstand and pour over Vogue and GQ. One day, a handful of subscription cards fell out, and I noticed the “bill me later” part. I asked the shopkeeper if I could have them, filled them out, and for three months, I built a library. In high school, my parents let me get subscriptions—but I held onto those issues and read them over and over.
A lot of people see fashion as trivial, but I believe that it’s a nonverbal way of communicating with like-minded people. Especially in Manhattan, you’re always presenting yourself to the public in some way. For me, fashion is armor. It’s a silent means of declaring who you are. When I went to college, I declared a fashion design major before finding interiors. What I am is a strong fashion editor—I’m good at pairing things together in interesting ways: colors, textures, attitudes—and a mix of high-low. My velvet Gucci blazer with a Uniqlo sweater; a leather Prada trench coat with my favorite Scotch and Soda jeans. Fashion also feeds my approach to color—you see daring combinations on the runway before the home. This, in part, is what keeps my interiors optimistic and open-minded.

Happy place: About 7 years ago, I rented a 300-year-old house outside of Avignon with my family—and it was kind of an epiphany. We’d spend mornings by the pool, then drive through the Rhône and visit towns, like Roussillon, which has this incredible sandstone, terra-cotta and ochre palette. Only fitting: Provence has a similar climate to Los Angeles, and the building materials—stucco, painted wood windows and shutters, tiled roofs—are essentially the same as Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, a primary vernacular of Southern California. Dream delivered: From the minute you walk in the front gate, you’re in this other world of pea gravel, olive trees and lavender. You enter the house through a pair of French doors, and it’s all very open and transparent. To me, it’s transportive emotionally. The clients, the design team and I were all so taken with the authenticity of the Provençal lifestyle; we tried to capture it’s relaxed, casual elegance in this home. willigerarchitect.com

Early influence: My grandmother was enamored with Radio City Music Hall. Whenever she had the opportunity, she would take me to see a live show or a movie. We’d spend time walking around Rockefeller Center, and she would point out all of the friezes and statues. Aha moment: Four years ago, I did the 30 Rock tour. I wasn’t so interested in the TV aspect, but in wandering the halls and common spaces and taking pictures! Ode to Deco: The marble floor in my entry was inspired by an elevator waiting area at 30 Rock; I worked with The Rug Company on a runner that’s literally an adaptation of the carpeting in Radio City Music Hall; and my interior doors have the same Art Deco-influenced, raised panel design. Balancing act: Inspiration is all about knowing when to peel back. Like Coco Chanel famously advised: stand in front of the mirror and remove one item. Unexpected idea: This photo of Sonny Bono and former Mayor Frank Bogert was the first inspiration image we showed our client. We overlaid it with a pink filter to tease out the magical light that happens at sunset in Palm Springs. There’s a rugged romance—a laid-back, masculine mood to it—that sung to us. Desert journey: There’s no front yard or backyard, per se. You enter through a portal in the Ficus, then move through these different sequences that are always changing: a fire pit surrounded by muhly grass, a palo Verde grove, an olive tree dining orchard. It speaks to this notion of traveling on horseback through an ephemeral landscape. Message received: For this project, we “borrowed” palm trees from the neighbors’ yards—and the San Jacinto mountains peaking above the hedges. At sunset, with the pink grasses in full bloom, the image of the cowboys and the palms—that feeling of a total Palm Springs escape—is really what you’re getting. sdisf.com

The English Country House
Mood board: From the first time I saw the property, the story in my mind was that it was a kooky British grandmother’s house that had been passed down to the next generation. It’s a large, new construction home, but the way the rooms were laid out—the intimacy of scale and the classical millwork— suggested history. Hero piece: I’ve always been drawn to tapestries, and here, they provided a strong “old manor house” through line. We hung a large 18thcentury Flemish tapestry in the living room and wallpapered the dining room in a Scalamandré print for a European country house vibe. Homework: I pinned about a billion pictures. Upton House, a Georgian manor in Gloucestershire that we referenced, has this hall with the most perfect minty green, which inspired the shades of celadon throughout. Modern muse: Our projects often begin with a sensibility imbued by a person, and in this case, Sophia Loren was one of our initial drivers for the mood and design intent; she’s the very embodiment of la dolce vita. Dramatic details: My clients wanted to transform a pastiche Colorado lodge into a home that was cool, effortless and glamorous; a space that lights up at night for entertaining, but also provides a languishing daytime salon. A core element to our work is always ‘the mix’ and for this dolce vita-driven project, the mix manifests in interesting combinations of textures and weaves. Think: mohair velvets and metallic glazed linens, marble and lacquer, and patinated brass elements. Secret sauce: It can be easy to go over the top, especially when you are going for high-impact design. The art is to know when you have done enough to tell the story. For a new home in Point Reyes Station, California, architect Dave Sturm channeled a design icon’s purist approach. Origin story: Our client grew up visiting Mexico and had loved Barragán since childhood. Field work: I was a budding architect when Barragán won the Pritzker Prize, and had been wanting to visit his home for decades. This project prompted my wife and I to spend two weeks in Mexico City. We visited several museums a day, and many Barragán buildings. I immersed myself in his spatial relationships. Good stuff: Barragán had this really limited, yet influential palette; a very high-modern aesthetic. His pink is almost like the national color. Key details: Nothing extraneous; we brought the walls all the way down to the floor—no trim, baseboards or moldings. And we used steel casement-style windows for the cleanest sight lines. Take it back: It’s a reference, not an homage. We were inspired by his simplicity. If Barragán had signed on, I imagine the walls might be pink. butlerarmsden.com

Imagine wandering through Central Park. Bright pink petals highlight a grid between cobblestones. Intricate moldings and sandstone carvings come into focus on stair railings. At sunset, the city skyline turns from orange to golden to purple to gray. It’s this romantic setting that provided designer Lori Weitzner with hope and refuge during the dark days of the pandemic—while also opening her eyes to patterns, textures and colors hidden in plain sight. “It was a lesson in the idea that you’re so familiar with something that you stop looking,” says the designer. “I began to see everything in a whole new way.” The resulting collection is an ode to Central Park—an exploration of fabrics and wallcoverings that captures the beauty of a city in the midst of rebirth. “I love New York. It’s what keeps my senses alive. You pass a bakery, then you pass litter on the street. It’s all there,” says Weitzner. “Central Park is an oasis to the urban grit.” IPhone in hand, the designer would “click, click, click” on weekly rambles through her sanctuary, then return to her quiet Chelsea design studio where she printed and arranged the photos on a large white table. From there, the creative work would begin—editing, sorting, sketching and playing with colors and materials. Chariot, for example, a soft jacquard linen with subtle damask patterning, evolved from an image she snapped of traditional stonework near Bethesda Fountain. “We painted it in the studio, and then, because we didn’t want such a traditional pattern, we took a sponge

and broke it up with texture so it would feel eroded,” explains Weitzner. Illumination, an embroidered textile, stems from sketches of foliage in the Shakespeare Garden, while Mesmerize, a cut velvet print, takes its cues from the fountain’s stone filigree. With the line complete and her schedule picking up, it might be surprising to hear that the designer still carves out time to walk in the park—but it’s a habit she’s not willing to give up. “The pandemic made me slow down and appreciate the details,” reflects Weitzner. “This collection is about nature, but it’s also about seeing things anew.”

By the 1930s, Eileen Gray was a solidified furniture designer and architect—a rare accomplishment for a woman by early 20th-century standards. Of her many contributions to the modern movement, the Irish-born creative designed the ubiquitous (and replicated) adjustable side table, which she designed specifically for her home dubbed E-1027, shown above, on the French Riviera. Gray set out to build the residence— her first ever—in her late 40s, and it still stands today as a survey of modern design.

Paul R. Williams was the first-ever Black member of the American Institute of Architects. A Los Angeles legend, Williams designed some 2,000 buildings in the area during his career, with A-list clients including Frank Sinatra and Lucille Ball. In the 1940s, he was hired for the renovation of the Beverly Hills Hotel, where he also fashioned the famous hand-written logo and iconic pink-and-green color scheme. What a beautifully layered space! This kitchen is an homage to the owner, whose zeal for art, food and life shines through in the design. When she and her family moved from Mexico to the Atlanta area, they acquired a charming bungalow property and she promptly saved her pennies for 12 years to have her dream “Matthew Quinn” kitchen, as she explained, which was truly the ultimate compliment. Wow. What did she request? Thinking outside of the box was important to the client. She wanted to make the kitchen uniquely her own, which included covering the walls with art, creating plenty of storage for cookbooks and even adding cork flooring that provides comfort when standing and cooking. But it’s really about this funky mix of colors and materials that works so well together. Talk to us about the details. The Amazonia Quartzite screamed “bar area.” The boldly colored veining of the stone is paired with an equally striking blue paint on the cabinetry that creates a vibrant, fun moment. CALMING INFLUENCE CHRISTOPHER PEACOCK What was the inspiration for this serene palette? A big, beautiful picture window decorates the kitchen, and we didn’t want the rest of the space to compete with that focal point, so there was a conscious effort to keep the colors more earthy and muted. We went with a two-tone paint effect for the cabinetry: a lovely olive or sage green on the island and then a warmer gray on the perimeter. Walk us through the rest of the design. The scheme was about making it simple and quiet while keeping it spacious. There wasn’t a strong desire to fill the walls with unnecessary cabinetry; rather our focus was on the
materials and finishes. A handmade subway tile with varying shades makes for a beautiful backsplash that provides subtle movement; we avoided anything too shiny and went with brushed and satin nickel hardware. How did you approach scale? This is a very large kitchen with a barreled ceiling. So we grounded the environment with a large island featuring cutting blocks at both ends and a custom pewter-and-nickel metal hood that anchors one wall. The island table developed into a multifunctional element with storage and seating, as well as a place to work, prepare food and entertain.

This kitchen is in an older home, right? It’s an absolutely stunning Spanish Renaissance residence that was built in the early 1900s along the Hudson River. Unfortunately, the kitchen was in bad shape after a recent update, but I was lucky that the client wanted to go back to its historic character. I am a big believer in taking from the past to create the future and spent a lot of time understanding the original aesthetic of this property.
How does your background inform your designs? I love classical architecture and historic structures—I’ve been a part of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art for a long time. Everything I do now, even after all this time, goes back to the aesthetic of old homes and what they teach us.

Where did you start? Before I did anything, there were several architectural changes that needed to be made, including taking down a wall, reworking a window and altering the ceiling. Then, I began the mission of taking a very narrow kitchen and making it functional. A lot of the elements, such as the metalwork and wood detailing, are inspired by 19th-century European kitchens.

JEAN LIN, COLONY In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, then-design journalist Jean Lin sparked an idea: invite local New York City artists to craft works from debris for storm relief. In the process, Lin grew familiar with the growth and representation struggles faced by independent makers—and the idea for a new, community-driven gallery model was born. Where the industry-standard commission hovers around 50 percent, Colony takes a smaller fraction of each sale, and charges a stabilized monthly co-op fee. Their contract also includes a non-exclusivity clause, which “shows our true intention of putting the bottom line of the designers we rep before our own,” says Lin. Expanding its influence and capital, Colony has since launched an in-house consultancy offering marketing, art direction and interior design services. “The vision moving forward is that these branches of business scale in tandem,” says Lin. “Which goes back to Colony’s founding spirit and genuine belief that all ships rise with the tide.” goodcolony.com

“I don’t love the word ‘disruption,’ but I am passionate about asking the question, ‘how can we make people’s lives easier?’ And I think the answer to that lies in meeting them where they are,” shares Anderson Somerselle. For Somerselle, a veteran of the textiles industry, this passion manifested in a digital-first showroom designed to aggregate boutique lines—as well as their up-to-date stock numbers and samples—in one destination. “It’s an honest response to witnessing how many designers and clients start their inspiration process online,” he notes. With the lower overhead associated with a digital footprint, Somerselle also provides a more affordable representation avenue for smaller brands. “It made sense to bring together these amazing artisans in a virtual showroom first, because there’s more reach,” he explains. “Eventually, we’ll open a physical space, but that will be a totally different experience. I want people to say, ‘Wow! I want to live here.’ ” somerselle.com

In a past life, Noam Dvir and Daniel Rauchwerger worked as critics at the Israeli newspaper Haaretz before falling in love, heading west to earn their masters at Harvard and founding BoND, a holistic architecture and design firm focused on expanding traditional ideologies of home. “In the residential environment, there’s this mold of how a space should be organized—but design for non-nuclear families looks different,” explains Dvir, pointing to the themes of gathering and desire that often distinguish their work. “Design should explore many different identities and lifestyles, and we really wear that on our sleeves.” With a fast-expanding residential practice, the couple has their sights set on more cultural projects in the commercial space. (They recently designed Company Gallery, a leading queer art institution, and are fast at work on a trans-led after-hours nightclub.) “It’s very important to us to work on projects that people will have access to, and that feed us spiritually,” says Rauchwerger, adding, “the real fun comes in sharing.” bureaund.com

“I truly don’t know a lot about sustainability—and that’s kind of the point!” demurs Zoe Feldman. For the Washington, D.C.-based designer, the birth of her daughter in 2018 collided with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s devastating special report on global warming, spurring her to evaluate her own role in the climate crisis. After researching avenues of impact—and

upon discovering that planting a tree only costs 5 cents— she designed a green pledge as a core pillar of her business. Aptly named Our Beautiful Planet, the framework includes donating her consultation fee to an environmental charity (then matching it upon contract signing), planting 100 trees for every approved design proposal (offsetting its carbon footprint), and a commitment to sourcing 80 percent vintage. Feldman hopes to turn this working template into a movement that designers can adapt to suit their practice. “These are easy things to implement,” she says. “We’re trying to show the industry that we can all take very small, simple steps and potentially, make a massive impact.” zoefeldmandesign.com
THE STORYTELLERS HOMAN RAJAI AND ELENA DENDIBERIA, STUDIO AHEAD
For Homan Rajai and Elena Dendiberia, design is both a global and local affair. What it is not is siloed around Eurocentrism. Meeting as young designers, the pair, with their respective Iranian and Russian roots, felt similarly disconnected from the world of European antiques they were living in, so they built a new framework. Questions like, What philosophies do you relate to? distinguish their client questionnaire, and Rajai and Dendiberia champion a diverse network of vendors working in traditional crafts. “There’s this assumption that—say, Persian rugs—are in the past tense. We’re educating our clients that there are living, breathing, modern-day craftspeople making these pieces,” says Rajai. At the other end of the spectrum, the firm is devoted to amplifying design at a hyper-local scale—and boasts a fast-expanding production wing of collaborations between Northern California artists. “Think of Alice Waters and what she did with farm-to-table,” says Rajai. “We’re bringing the same idea to design.” studioahead.com
THE BOTANIST JESSICA VIOLA, VIOLA GARDENS
A promise to “seek biological over technical solutions” nests at the core of Jessica Viola’s approach to the garden. Certified in ecological and permaculture design, Viola (one of a handful of licensed female landscape contractors in California) cut her teeth rehabilitating lawns into gardens in the California drought. Those regenerative principles have propelled her business since. Whether sculpting brims in the landscape to better harness rainfall, or planting for erosion control and fire resistance, Viola’s bottom line is embracing the intrinsic characteristics of each property, fostering the age-old relationships between people, flora and fauna amidst a changing climate. In this way, tackling the crisis becomes a creative exercise: “When you’re coming at things from a place of fear, you block what’s possible,” says Viola. “Instead of trying to solve all the world’s problems, I’m facilitating conditions for more awareness—and going one garden at a time.” violagardens.com

What part has the digital age played in the success of your firm? Technology builds our brand by allowing us to reach a huge audience. This approach also informs our creative process. We love CAD, Lumion and SketchUp—but draw by hand to keep the “art” in architecture. Please name influences and inspirations that inform your work. The biggest influencers of our work are client satisfaction and timeless designs. There’s a reason realtors add our name to their listings, and buyers actively seek our signature homes. Our brand increases a home’s value.

chieving great architecture involves a number of factors: skill, talent, hard work, collaboration, faith, stewardship and a fearless dedication to taking on projects that put all of these ideals to the test. C.P. What has been your greatest success? My ability to maintain and grow Drewett Works over the past 21 years. It takes focus, determination, faith and blessings to build and sustain a company that has staying power and outstanding collaborative relationships. How do you include your clients in the creative process? I listen to them and we create image boards, which gives my clients a direct influence and voice in the process. It’s remarkable how detailed they can get.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE What services does your firm offer? Our portfolio is predominantly single-family custom homes, although we’ve also been lucky enough to provide master planning services, as well as community center and monument designs. List three design rules you follow in your work. Everything must function. Bring the outdoors in. And facilitate sensory experiences.
I
n his college years, Mark Tate, AIA, spent much of his time in the studio. As a fine arts major, he didn’t necessarily fill his sketchbooks with homes, hospitality spaces or public buildings, but the transition to becoming an architect was natural. After all, both disciplines require an immense amount of creativity, problem solving and vision. Initially an architectural draftsman, Tate grew to love the profession so much that he founded his own firm, Tate Studio Architects, in 2007. Today, Tate’s work reflects his past studies. Like other professionally trained architects, he has the uncanny ability to think outside of the box even
while maintaining the cornerstone pillars of his art. “Good design is not about a specific style, it’s about creating something that is lasting and timeless,” Tate says. “It crafts spaces that enhance the lives of the people that live within them, yet it pushes the envelope of form and function while seeking aesthetics and livability.” The backdrop of Tate’s projects inform his work as well. “It’s important that each of our designs be integral to the surrounding landscape and capture every opportunity the site has to offer,” the Gold List honoree adds. “To us, each project is a unique opportunity to forge something that has never been done before.”

What is the best thing about your job? We are so fortunate to do what we love! At Tate Studio Architects, we work with the best clients and builders and are so blessed to call them our friends. If you weren’t in this profession, what would you be doing? I would love to be a musician, playing guitar in a band! What is your favorite place to travel? What’s your dream project. Doing what I do every day. Our team, along with designers, builders, architects and clients we work with, bring a wide variety of skills and ideas that allow us to create something spectacular. What could be better? How do you initially engage clients and partners? I love to show them our shop. Once they see the inner workings of what we do and how we do it, new possibilities open up that none of us could have imagined. Share three rules you work by. Listen before you speak. Only make suggestions if the client asks. Make a suggestion three times. If the client doesn’t listen, stop and do your job the best way you know how.

Share something surprising about yourself. My first degree was a bachelor’s in nursing. One of the most life-changing experiences I had as a nurse was volunteering at leprosy colonies in India.

What is your best piece of design advice? Add color and pattern to your home. If that thought scares you, include it in a less used space, like a powder or laundry room. It will be a surprise for guests and make doing laundry fun! Describe your dream project. A small cabin nestled in the woods in Jackson Hole where I have free reign over all design decisions. Vintage art and memorabilia adorn the walls. There is a cozy nook for reading and napping and the little ones have a secret playroom. And plaid abounds!

Define good design. It is a combination of understanding the curation of strong pieces, incorporating refined materials and architectural details, and having the creative talent to compose those elements in fresh interpretations that remain timeless. What are your design pet peeves? Design knockoffs, mediocracy in anything and a lost opportunity. What’s on the horizon? My career has expanded into creating luxury experiences and comprehensive designs for hospitality projects. Currently, I am designing a fascinating landscape resort outside of Sedona, which is deeply satisfying.

reating spaces where family and friends can kick their feet up and relax is a common theme in Laura Kehoe’s designs. “We have been told by clients that they find our work to be beautiful, but also very livable,” says Kehoe, principal of her namesake firm, Laura Kehoe Design. Celebrating 12 years in business this year, the firm’s growth has come about very organically. The first project that put the company on the map was a fantastic oceanfront home in Del Mar, California. “We have worked on three homes with this family since then. They are extremely special people
and I am forever grateful for the opportunity,” Kehoe says. “Every project we complete seems to lead to another wonderful one.” Her long list of clients and what each brings to the table provides a constant source of inspiration. “I love to travel and always return with fresh ideas to bring to our projects,” she says, referring to two projects her team is currently working on—a spectacular mountainside family retreat in Flagstaff and another in Park City. “We love what we do every day and feel grateful that we get to work on some of the most custom and luxurious homes.”

ASK THE EXPERT To this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success and why? My greatest personal success is my family. Professionally, I feel proud to have built a creative, supportive and fun place to work. What type of project would you like to take on that you’ve yet to do? A boutique hotel, where we could take more creative risks. Share influences and inspirations that inform you and your work. I love to travel and always return with fresh ideas to bring to our projects. But with everyone traveling a little less this year, there has been a focus on special hobby spaces at home. It has been fun to hear from clients spending more time at home, cooking and enjoying more time there.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE What does Sesshu mean? It was inspired by the great 15th-century Japanese artist, Sesshū Tōyō, and translates as temperance or restraint—a hallmark of my design philosophy. What drew you to interior design? I grew up loving art and being creative, rearranging furniture and building forts in the backyard. When I discovered interior design, I realized I could have a career doing the things I enjoy most.

It involves a comprehensive plan that also considers the homeowner’s lifestyle and visions, as well as their physical health and well-being. As the principal designer and CEO of Scottsdalebased Sesshu Design Associates, Ltd., Tanya Shively, ASID, NCIDQ and LEED, and her expert team have been achieving these ideals with her trademarked WELL Designed approach for nearly 30 years. “The WELL Designed home is a philosophy that includes enhancing wellness and well-being, as well as taking an eco-friendly approach to

Discuss your particular style and focus. I create homes that are organic and contemporary in style with a sustainable and healthy approach. To achieve this, I use materials that are natural and celebrate their inherent beauty. What are your top three design rules? One, use natural materials. Two, function is essential and beauty is inspirational. Three, choose what you love. What destination most inspires you? I grew up at the foot of the Grand Tetons, so I would say that the natural majesty of the mountains always inspires me.

What faraway destination inspires you most? Italy, of course. It’s in my DNA and is an extension of my life and work. Describe your everyday projects. They range from made-to-measure Italian closets and dressing rooms to modern armoires that feature the latest technologies, most luxurious materials and newest organizational accessories. We also design specialty spaces like handbag closets, sneaker closets, and luggage rooms.

roundbreaking ideas and cutting-edge products are not merely design accessories; they are very often great design unto themselves. Enter Marty Guthmiller, whose concept for high-quality, minimalist switches and outlet covers inspired Flush Mount, his innovative “Made in Arizona” brand that has become a must with leading designers, architects and builders. “I saw an in-wall outlet a few years ago and had to have it,” Guthmiller says. “However, when I pulled it apart to understand how it worked, I realized that there had to be a better way and that I was the one to figure it out. After several trips to the hardware store, and lots of hot glue and experimenting, my first prototype was conceived. I then learned AutoCAD, purchased a couple of three-dimensional printers to keep up with my ideas and Flush Mount was born.” Since unveiling their already iconic initial offerings last spring, Guthmiller and his team have been busy working on expanding the

But unlike most travelers, he searches—even if subconsciously— for three distinct structural qualities: firmness, commodity and delight. Firmness speaks to the integrity of the building and how well it’s built; commodity measures the functionality of the space, or how it meets people’s needs; and delight is what most onlookers notice—the physical beauty of the building. “These concepts serve as the basis of all good design,” Ron Robinette says. “I look for how these ideas have been incorporated into buildings everywhere I go.” Back home,
Robinette’s firm, Robinette Architects, fuses these principles with practical knowledge of the Sonoran Desert and its residents. “Our creative process involves learning about our clients, their goals, how they live, how they expect to grow,” the Gold List honoree shares. “Then, comes the most challenging and fun part of the process, the synchronization of their lifestyle with the character of the site.” The architecture firm is no stranger to the difficulties of the desert. Clients help themselves the most by spending time thinking about and defining what it is they want, need and envision in their new homes. It sounds obvious but it takes serious reflection and thought to determine those essential factors. To this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success? What makes me feel most successful is being able to instill a passion for architecture in my team, in our clients and in the construction partners who build our designs.

What inspires your aesthetic most? The desert’s natural textures and Scandinavian minimalism inspire our “Scandinavian meets desert” style. We love clean lines paired with richly textured, comfortable furnishings and unique vintage pieces. How do you include clients in your creative process? We work closely with our clients to understand how they live, what they love and where they travel so that their environments reflect who they are. We also think outside of the box when it comes to the day-to-day functionality of their spaces, which really drives our designs. What do you consider your greatest success? The culture and reputation I have created. Our team is savvy, positive and excited for work every day. We challenge ourselves on every project and I love to see the caliber of our portfolio continue to evolve.

Inspired by their collection of contemporary art and design, homeowners Dimitri and Suzanne Haniotis worked with interior designer Lynne Beyer and architects Nick Tsontakis, Aaron Forbes and Jörg Berghäuser to create their sleek Paradise Valley oasis. The home’s modern statement begins with exterior metal cladding installed by Charly’s Roofing that becomes “a different color in the morning and at sunset,” notes Suzanne. “It can range from brown to green, to almost a warm gold tone.”

rt and design have always been a love language for Dimitri and Suzanne Haniotis. Dimitri, after all, proposed to Suzanne by installing a vast wedding band sculpture at their San Francisco penthouse. So when the avid collectors moved to Paradise Valley, they hoped building a new house from scratch would provide a permanent place for their art pieces, many long hidden away in storage. Coalescing these works into a true family home, however, required fresh eyes—so the couple turned to interior designer Lynne Beyer to find cohesion among their beloved art and antiques. Between original Californian Abstract Expressionist paintings and Art Deco and midcentury modern furniture, their love for 20thcentury masterworks was immediately clear for Beyer. “That was a big dictator in terms of style,” she explains of her approach to the interiors. The home itself is also a love letter to modern design. As an engineer, Dimitri tapped into his background, constructing the residence in collaboration with a team of architects. The final structure became an ode to Suzanne’s adoration of architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe—particularly his marriage of stone, steel and glass for the iconic Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. Conceptualized by architect Nick Tsontakis with contributions by German architect Jörg Berghäuser, the lean dwelling is nestled into Camelback Mountain and cloaked in galvanized metal. “It’s almost like a stealth home,” muses Tsontakis of the design, which “depresses the house as much as possible against the land.” A ribbon of uninterrupted glass snakes around the north side facing Paradise Valley, “so when you look out the windows, you see this gorgeous mountain outside that’s been there forever,” says Dimitri. “The house doesn’t restrict you. The eye just travels.” The surrounding golden landscape seeps into the open-concept interior fleshed out by architect Aaron Forbes, who brought in warm woods and ornate stonework like the book-matched Brazilian marble slabs in the living room, which the team framed like a painting. In the entrance atrium, he configured towering articulated walls, their geometric angles casting shadows echoing the terrain outside. “We abstracted the mountain and let the force and weight of it come into the house,” explains Forbes.
Working with the striking backdrop, Beyer curated the couple’s pieces in response to the architecture. She embraced the conservatory’s expansive scale head on, composing a dramatic black-and-white palette. “It really is so rare to walk into a residence where a room sets such a tone,” says Beyer. “So it needed to feel like a little museum, where you sit and look at amazing individual pieces.” The space became a stage for the couple’s most theatrical items, like their starcrowned Pierre Chareau reproduction floor lamps and six-legged John Dickinson African table reproduced by Sutherland. Peeking through the front door, their whimsical Donald Duck painting by artist Mel Hanson greets guests, hinting at the couple’s tongue-in-cheek humor. The designer cultivated more intimate spaces in the main living areas by carefully editing down their furniture, giving breathing room for some of their familiar pieces. “They are totally unique items that needed to be honored and put in their best place,” says Beyer. In the main seating areas, she mixed in a few contemporary acquisitions with treasured Art Deco-style pieces like their Pierre Chareau reproduction coffee table. In this fresh context, these pieces feel more modern than ever, reviving the aesthetic revolutionary zeal they represented when they were first designed a century ago. Color also proved key, as the designer punctuated the interiors with lush hues that were “very much driven by the art, by what I saw as their love of saturation of color,” she says. Touches of red and fuchsia upholstery, for example, pull from the rich jewel tones of the couple’s treasured Joan Brown painting hanging in the living room. Beyer also incorporated handmade, custom area rugs throughout the dwelling. Layered with refined patterns and textures, the rugs became “like a fabulous piece of art on the floor,” she notes. Seeing these items, old and new, occupy pride of place in their home marks a full circle for the couple and their life together. This includes their wedding ring sculpture, which now lives on the pool terrace, striking a geometric counterpoint to the cantilever overhang and linear infinity pool. “Lynne was so marvelous and accommodating to work with the existing pieces we had,” says Suzanne. “We had collected over time all these pieces that were submerged and buried. She truly respected them and found a place for them all.”
In the main living area, Beyer incorporated striking pieces from the owners’ collection, like a faithful Pierre Chareau reproduction coffee table, twin midcentury swivel chairs with stainless-steel backs and a dramatic Knoll midcentury lounge chair reupholstered in fuchsia velvet to echo the jewel tones of the couple’s beloved Joan Brown painting, Girls in the Surf with Moon Casting a Shadow.

T
imeless and elegant—that’s what a couple wanted for their Paradise Valley residence. However, as enthusiastic entertainers in the wine business (and parents to young kids) they also needed contemporary, warm and inviting vibes. “We wanted it to have a very sophisticated feel to reflect their personalities and their style,” says designer Mara Green, who teamed up with architect C.P. Drewett, general contractor Rich Brock and landscape designer Dennis Canedy to create the home. “But they wanted to make sure it was very welcoming, with chairs for days, and very centered around family.” It makes sense then that the architectural design started with the heart of the home. The kitchen—complete with a highly specified back area for catering and an adjacent wine room— serves as the center of the U-shaped abode. “We laid the kitchen out in concept before the house had even begun,” says Drewett. The bar and kitchen open to the patio, where guests can circulate, and a flanking outdoor kitchen is part of the alfresco living areas. Offering expansive views of the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, the house is rendered in plaster and travertine, with ivory porcelain floors and hemlock ceilings that extend to the patio. It creates a natural flow that “perfectly supports the indoor-outdoor concept that the client wanted,” Brock says. Laid out around the pool, the main bedroom anchors one end, and the guest suite and children’s bedrooms are on the other. “It’s a truly seamless integration of interior and exterior spaces,” explains Drewett. “It feels like a mini-resort.” When it came to the interiors, a challenge presented itself. While elegance and family friendliness were the two driving design factors, how the couple envisioned these ideas differed. He leans toward modern, she toward traditional. But, because Green came on board early in the project—“so that we could understand the aesthetics from a full conceptual view,” she says—it allowed Drewett and the designer to work side-by-side on the interiors. A strong architectural element that led the way was the fenestration: black metal mullions offer a strong, graphic counterpoint to the otherwise light materials while celebrating the openings in

the tailored, classical style to which the wife was drawn. Says Green, “We used the same simplistic contemporary design principles for the interiors and added those classic accents,” such as the great room’s plaster fireplace and the vintage-style wood details in the kitchen. The furnishings palette was also directed by this classic sensibility. “The subtle detail by Mara was extraordinary,” muses Brock. The designer used what she calls, “a canvas” of very neutral taupes, whites and charcoal. The tones set a foundation against which maroon pillows catch attention in the great room and vintage blue velvet on the dining chairs brings interest to the dining room, picking up flecks of navy in the rug underfoot. The upholstery, Green explains, lends a traditional feeling, balancing the contemporary aspects of the design. “Throughout the palette, we used different textures and different fabrics to add more warmth,” she says. “It’s a little more European.” Green relied on this blend of textiles to accentuate the softer side of the contemporary furnishings. Mixing with the rectilinear pieces in the main bedroom is a luxurious curation of velvet, Alpaca and leather, with a chevron wood veneer wallcovering behind the minimalistic headboard. At the bar, the backs of the cleanlined stools feature a woven fabric, lending depth and interest to the neutral shade. Of course, as frequent entertainers, those fabrics had to be durable. “They have kids, dogs and a lot of wine,” Green laughs, “so that was a conversation we were always having: ‘Will this be resistant to a red wine spill?’ ” Another key element: lighting. “They’re playful people,” the designer says of the couple. So, she chose to incorporate whimsical touches. Pendants over the breakfast nook are suspended from wavy wires, and the metallic chandelier over the dining table is reminiscent of fireworks. Throughout the house, accent lighting was a big part of the overall feel, like in the main bathroom, where LED lighting runs up the wall above the tub and emanates from glowing coves. Green, Drewett and Brock agree that the more time they spent working on the project as a team, the more cohesive it became. But, the architect notes, the owners deserve much of the credit as well. “Of all of my clients, they had the highest level of vision for what they wanted from their home,” Drewett says. “They knew how they wanted to live.”

“The beautiful Jerusalem limestone veneer and Venetian plaster of the great room fireplace really anchors the masses within the tall spaces and adds warmth to the rooms,” notes Brock. An oversize charcoal sectional by Feathers Fine Custom Furnishings provides an ideal location to spend time together as a family, or for party guests to mingle.

aze long enough into nature and you’ll start to see patterns. Gold Canyon-based sculptor Mary Meyer got plenty of practice doing just that during her childhood spent on a farm in South Dakota. “I think I was born with an innate connection to nature,” she muses. As an adult, she channels her lifelong passion for ecology and biodiversity into her art practice. Using stone-carving techniques, she works with different materials—including clay, porcelain, wood, bronze, iron and aluminum—to create biomorphic sculptures that explore the human relationship with nature and how our forms are mirrored in the landscape. Meyer describes her creative process as being much more meditative than calculated. “The first sculpture class I
ever took was in stone carving, so I was taught to work very intuitively with the material,” she says. Her most recent works focus mostly on clay, which she became acquainted with when using it to cast metal. “I found that I could work really fast through clay and make smaller pieces, but larger installations,” she says. “It’s a return to that direct carving experience I had in stone, but I work more immediately because of its softness. I like that the mark of the hands, the mark of the tool, is always embedded in clay. And unlike stone, it’s both subtractive and additive.” She begins each work by creating abstract stencils based upon botanical illustrations. After rolling out the clay, Meyer uses those stencils to cut out the shapes, hand builds the forms, carves the pieces and, finally, bisque fires them in a kiln, prepping them for color. “I use different methods for applying color,” she explains, “such as hand painting the
incised areas with earth pigments or rubbing graphite on the surface.” Once finished, the artist hangs the forms on panels using sewing needles and pins. “The metal objects I use are symbols of repetitious activities—that meditative state is very important in my work,” she notes. “Because they’re metal, they’re always present and reflecting the here and now.” While her work often adheres to a monochromatic palette, Meyer says there is color on the horizon. Her next project— part of a residency at Tempe Center for the Arts—is based on the blooming flora in the desert. “It’s this idea of resilience and using seeds as metaphors for the human condition and what we’ve all been through recently,” she says. “These plants, trees and cacti bloom with little or no water but they have this vibrant color. I recognized that same resilience in people during the past year. I think we all need some color now.”

hen it comes to dated residences, there is often hesitancy. “Clients can be skeptical of buying an old-world style home because they don’t know how to bring it up to date,” says interior designer Holly Wright. “But it’s a shame to pass on them when all they need are aesthetic modifications, plus they often have great bones and great views.” In this case, her new clients were already in the house—and had been for many years. But they had tired of its heavy, old-fashioned feel and wanted to find, or even build, a new modern abode. Wright’s perspective, however, helped them see that they could stay put and start fresh all at the same time. “This is a young family,” explains Wright, “and the home is in a gated area with good schools nearby—it just made sense to stay where they were.” Bringing on builder Tom Argue to help make a few architectural tweaks, the designer set her sights on the main living areas, starting with the great room’s fireplace. “It was a traditional mantle with columns, so we replaced it with a clean-lined steel-and-drywall design for the more industrial feel the clients wanted,” Wright notes. “That really drove the whole design scheme.” In the kitchen, she added a new hood, cabinetry and lighting. “These Tuscan transformations are fun to do!” she says. “It’s like a puzzle—we’re making it click in a new way by opening walls and repurposing spaces and materials.” The couple’s cavernous bedroom was next to meet the sledgehammer, with the designer knocking out a fireplace that peeped through to the bathroom and a dated, unused tub. “We redid the bathroom completely, doubling it in size by lifting the ceiling and creating an all-new layout,” Wright says. “People think we added square footage, but we didn’t. It’s just a better configuration.” The designer also replaced one bedroom wall with new energy-efficient glass doors that open onto a patio. “The room was dark, and they wanted something brighter. Now they can see the clouds and rain, the view, and the trees,” she explains.

But it’s important to note that Wright’s decisions about what to keep were just as significant as what to jettison. “The exterior of the house is Santa Barbara style, so we wanted to maintain some of those elements inside,” she explains. “It’s necessary to have a common thread through a home, so it made sense to keep that interior-exterior relationship.” To that end, she identified several key architectural elements that would create such balance. The original reclaimed floors, which the designer describes as “beautiful, distressed wood with old nail holes,” were a must-stay, as were the living room’s ceiling beams. “Without them the room would have felt cold,” she notes. Wright also kept the dwelling’s numerous brick archways. “To remove them would have been a more major project, so we got rid of the attached columns and softened the look of the brick with a painted glaze,” the designer says. To bring new life to the reimagined rooms, Wright worked closely with the owners on melding existing pieces with contemporary designs. “The wife had already bought new pieces for the living room, so that helped start the evolution process,” she explains. “But I like to make sure all of my homes are individual, so we shopped trade resources for tailored pieces unique to her.” And when they spotted a pair of spiney gold chandeliers, they knew they had found the element that would lead the dining room’s transformation. “We built the room around them,” says Wright. “They bring an industrial edge to the space.” The result is still an old-world style abode appropriate to its neighborhood, but it has been reinvigorated. “It’s now a modern home with a timeless palette and natural textures,” notes Wright, who is quick to point out that the updated layout better meets the family’s needs. “There are more kid spaces now,” she explains, and the grand piano was given a clublike setting all its own. A new art collection, too, has reinforced the modern spirit with its bold black-and-white works. “There’s a way to make these older structures modern without taking them down to the studs or being wasteful,” says Wright. “You can repurpose and recycle and still make a house that’s warm and inviting—a standapart home with character.”
“The original space was dark,” says interior designer Holly Wright of the entrance to a newly renovated home in Paradise Valley. “Letting in light with a new front door created harmony with the original wood floors,” she notes. The pendant lights are from Circa Lighting and the artwork is by Los Angeles-based Form Design Studio.
Wright wanted to “eliminate the old-world aspects and update the living room with a brighter aesthetic, adding touches of raw metal and organic elements,” she explains.
