LETTER EDITOR’S
Nuts & Bolts I recently purchased a bronze acorn charm necklace cast through the lost-wax technique. The fact that it is handcrafted by a delightful Florentine artist and designer, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at her studio was part of my attraction, but another reason that I was drawn to the piece was the acorn’s symbolic meaning: great and wondrous things can emerge from small and humble beginnings. That’s often the case in design and in other creative pursuits. You start with a seed, a kernel of an idea, that requires nurturing and attention to grow into something extraordinary. Many of you are embarking on a new design project, tinkering with an idea or building something from the get-go. I hope you embrace the fits-and-starts of the kickoff and savor the long journey into full potential.

“GENERATION PAPER: FAST FASHION OF THE 1960s” If ever there were a season of optimism, it would be spring. And Phoenix Art Museum’s latest fashion exhibition, “Generation Paper: Fast Fashion of the 1960s,” captures that sense of hope. On view until July 17, the exhibition showcases more than 80 garments crafted from a host of paper and paper-like materials (think plastic, laminate, Tyvek and other “non-woven” options). “It was a moment of exploration and experimentation, testing the possibilities of these textiles during a period of space-age thinking,” says Helen Jean, the museum’s Jacquie Dorrance Curator of Fashion Design. Those possibilities include colorful abstract prints, flower-power motifs, crinkly metallics and even a paper bikini with a matching sun hat and tote. While the exhibition is a fun glimpse into a two-year trend from half a century ago, Jean says it’s also a reminder to consider how a fixation on fast and new can have long-lasting effects: We’re still looking at what was supposed to be disposable. phxart.org

has tons of natural light, and I love my neighbors. The Melrose area is so welcoming and wonderful. Do you have a favorite object in your store right now? There’s an old runner in rust, brown and black that’s kind of minimalistic as far as Turkish rugs go. No one’s looked at it to buy, and I’m OK with that. I’ve never seen another one like it. What about the desert makes it friendly to a variety of styles? We have these elements in nature that contrast, like soft grass and cactus. They don’t seem like they should go together well, but they do. In design, that sets the tone for the idea that there’s room for everyone at the table. If you could offer one piece of design advice to our readers, what would it be? I would encourage people to stop looking at trends and think about what they really like. Challenge yourself to mix it up.

In many ways, The Found House actually found its owner, Sarah Rhodes. Rhodes had started off flipping houses before parleying that work into an interior design company. Then the pandemic struck. “It was a bad breakup that I didn’t want to happen,” she says with characteristic candor. Her company was shuttered, and Rhodes found herself with a lot of leftover inventory and not a lot of direction. Fast forward to April 2021 when she stumbled upon the perfect space for a shop to hold all those products at 7th and Highland Avenues in Phoenix. Today, The Found House purveys furnishings, art and accessories that adhere to what Rhodes describes as a Southwestern Nouveau aesthetic. It’s a little bit modern, a little bit retro and a little bit desert, with lots of vintage rugs thrown in for good measure. thefoundhouse.com

DESIGN
WHO: Tierra Del Lagarto, the Scottsdale shop specializing in colorful finds from around the world helmed by mother-daughter duo, Linda and Meg Van Lith.
OUTSIDE INTERESTS
“CHIHULY IN THE DESERT” “Chihuly in the Desert” is noteworthy for a number of reasons. For starters, the exhibition is on view at two locations: Taliesin West and Desert Botanical Garden. It was also developed over the course of several years to be a veritable homage to art, architecture and nature. Accordingly, it works in concert with its surroundings to highlight both the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright and the garden’s natural splendor. But it’s perhaps the timing that is the most serendipitous. The exhibition invites visitors to experience art together again, but from the relative safety of the outdoors. From the medusa-like splendor of Sol de Citrón at Desert Botanical Garden to the whimsical Fire Amber Herons (shown above) at Taliesin West, each piece expresses possibility and restraint in the most colorful—and culturally prescient— of ways. “Chihuly in the Desert” includes 10 new pieces alongside other Chihuly classics and will run until June 19 with both day and night viewings. chihulyinthedesert.org
WHY: Because you missed your trip abroad during the pandemic. Or because you want to track the latest arrival of goods—Tierra Del Lagarto’s loyal customers have been known to arrive at the store to get first dibs on (and help unpack) recently arrived containers. The shop’s focus on artisan-crafted items makes the world beyond feel just a little closer. IN THEIR WORDS: “Our vignettes celebrate a vibrant world that encourages people not to be afraid of color in their homes. There are enough greige stores. We revel in being a shop (and an Instagram account!) full of color!”
BLOCK PARTY OUR BLOCK CO.
‘Tis the season for freshening up your home. And whether you’re looking to breathe new life into your interior spaces or spruce up your exteriors, Our Block Co. may provide the solution. This Phoenix-based company specializes in artisan concrete blocks that have been applied to exterior and interior walls with equal success. The designs capture a range of moods with starbursts, circles and a mix of other organic and geometric shapes all speaking to different architectural styles. Such aesthetic versatility comes as no surprise considering Our Block Co.’s president and co-owner Thomas Porter draws inspiration from nature as well as architecture by the likes of Frank Lloyd Wright and Jean Prouvé. Complementing the artistry of each block is the craftsmanship. Porter and his team cast the blocks with a proprietary concrete blend that results in a smoother surface than traditional breeze-blocks, and every step of the production process happens in house. ourblockco.com

From sumptuous libraries and new entertaining essentials to cherished collections, Luxe explores the new meaning of home base and personal pursuits.
AS LIBRARIES CLIMB TO THE TOP OF CLIENTS’ WISH LISTS, DESIGNERS RESPOND WITH ARRESTING ROOMS FOR MORE THAN JUST READING. W R I T T E N BY M A I L E P I N G E L
Designers have long delighted in creating home libraries. In fact, legendary decorator Dorothy Draper even encouraged the idea among her bibliophile clientele. “Don’t hesitate to start a library, a collection of books on any subject that interests you is a joy to have!” remarked Draper. But today’s libraries serve as more than just a refuge for reading—they are spaces to gather with family and entertain guests. Ranging from studious to swank, libraries can project a

Whether you prefer books, magazines or reading on your favorite device, a library provides “a different environment within the home,” explains designer Michael Aiduss. “It’s about shutting the rest of the world off, collecting your thoughts and feeling a sense of relaxation.” But designer Joe Lucas warns playfully: be ready to shop as it always takes more books to fill a library than one anticipates!
“ We turned this Charlotte, North Carolina, living room into a snug library, but it’s really like a family room. Wood builtins and gold-flecked red wallpaper feel unexpected, while a hidden bar makes it a great place to have drinks with guests or simply enjoy the cozy atmosphere.” –BARRIE BENSON, BARRIE BENSON INTERIOR DESIGN

“ Adding a little whimsy, like the velvet tête-à-tête in the middle of this Los Altos, California, library, makes the space feel fun, plus there’s a games table for the kids and a pair of wing chairs for the adults. It shifts the center of focus away from the kitchen to create a place where this family of readers can relax together.” –ANN LOWENGART, ANN LOWENGART INTERIORS

“ Give your library a more modern vibe with a pretty paint color—try picking a shade from a book spine and add pull-out shelves to create an extra work surface. FOUR NEW TITLES TO UP THE INTRIGUE—AND BEAUTY— OF YOUR HOME LIBRARY
YSL Lexicon: An ABC of the Fashion, Life, and Inspirations of Yves Saint Laurent Edited by Martina Mondadori and Stephan Janson Its publication timed to commemorate Yves Saint Laurent’s first runway show 60 years ago, the new tome, edited by Cabana founder Martina Mondadori and designer Stephan Janson, a co-curator of the current pan-Paris exhibition, Yves Saint Laurent Aux Musées, explores the many facets of YSL’s life through a playful exploration of words. “Our book,” write Mondadori and Janson, “seeks to offer a series of evocations in the form of an alphabet, using the words he liked, those which had a particular meaning for him.” Taking on the people, places and concepts that inspired the designer are a host of high-profile contributors including Hamish Bowles on Haute Couture and Marian McEvoy on Jardin Majorelle. Illustrating the book are images from YSL’s archive, set against lavish textiles in truly iconic style. rizzoliusa.com
By Andrea Monath Schumacher “I poured through my portfolio and chose exclusive projects— it felt like the right time to show them,” says the designer of her debut book. Colorful inspiration abounds, along with Monath Schumacher’s helpful design tips: faux bois cut velvet elevates a beachy vibe, while a red front door encourages good luck and positive energy. “I want readers to be inspired to live large at home, and this book shows them where, and how, to take risks.” gibbs-smith.com
Lotusland Forward by Marc Appleton Only an opera singer could envision a garden as theatrical as the famed Lotusland in Montecito, California, and Ganna Walska’s botanical masterpiece—featuring more than 3,400 plants— has been captivating visitors for 30 years. “Hers was obsessive botanical collecting,” writes architect Marc Appleton. Featuring photographs by Lisa Romerein, Lotusland is a verdant treat for anyone enchanted by gardens. rizzoliusa.com
Portugal: The Cookbook By Leandro Carreira In chef Leandro Carreira’s new cookbook, the Londonbased chef pays homage to the culinary history of his native Portugal. Featuring some 550 recipes, Carreira shares dishes from across his homeland, including Alentejostyle gazpacho, Algarvian seafood dishes and macaroons from a 13th-century convent. Recipes also include insights into traditional cookware, like the cataplana, a metal pot that originated in North Africa and is frequently used in Portuguese cooking. phaidon.com

SCHUMACHER DEBUTS OUT-OF-THE-BOX DINING ROOM CLASSICS IDEAL FOR MODERN LIVING. W R I T T E N B Y M A R I O LÓ P E Z- C O R D E R O
Call it a revival of the highest order: When Schumacher created its Editions furniture line, the firm set out to bring back the iconoclastic approach of a bygone time. “We wanted to craft furniture with up-and-coming designers from around the globe to recreate the period around the mid-20th-century— a time when people like Charles and Ray Eames were breaking the mold with original pieces that weren’t just derivatives of old forms,” says creative director Dara Caponigro. “We were looking to curate fresh, authentic furniture that spoke to a dining experience where people want to linger.” Danish designer Charlotte Høncke took a hygge-centric approach, warming up a steel-framed chair with a cozy fabric back to create a cocoonlike atmosphere. “You feel like you’re snuggled into a nest,” says Caponigro. Høncke also devised a table marrying Scandi practicality with inspired details like a soft, curved edge apron. Salla Luhtasela and Wesley Walters, principals of the Helsinki-based firm Kaksikko, used wood to fashion pieces that combine urbanity with country house ease—a yin-yang match adaptable to many homes. Take their Mokki chair, available in a range of painted finishes, its upholstered seat and rail allow for endless customization. The duo’s reinterpretation of a farmhouse table
LUXESOURCE.COM

packs subtle upgrades into a deceptively simple design where every detail counts. When Syrette Lew of Brooklyn-based Moving Mountains was tasked with crafting an upholstered piece, she went sexy. The designer conceived a curving dining chair with pieced panels that highlight its geometry while allowing for versatility in other spaces of the home. “It would work equally well in the living room,” says Caponigro. Her table design, meanwhile, crafted from two pieces of
solid wood, embodies the gravity-defying proportions and poetry of sculpture. What all the pieces have in common is a dedication to quality, ecologically sourced materials that are expertly crafted. There’s nothing remotely “mass” about them. “They’re not rolling off a factory floor somewhere,” Schumacher’s creative director notes. “Each piece will be numbered as an edition and made by hand in Italy.” Now that’s a revival worth waiting for. fschumacher.com

For Keeps DESIGNER MALLY SKOK REFLECTS ON THE TREASURED COLLECTION OF OYSTER PLATES AMASSED AT HER CAPE COD HOME.
Just down the road from our house overlooking Buzzards Bay in West Falmouth, Massachusetts, is an amazing antiques barn. It was there, 25 years ago, when I found three beautiful hand-painted oyster plates. I didn’t purposefully set out to start a collection, but I fell in love with them instantly, and the rest is history. My mother taught me to love houses, and to layer them. Things don’t have to be terribly expensive to be special. If you love something, buy it and put it on a shelf—that’s sort of our family motto. I buy what appeals to me in the moment, and that’s how the process of collecting starts organically. If something is meaningful to you—if it speaks to your heart—it doesn’t matter what it is. That’s how you end up with an authentic collection. Slowly but surely, my collection has grown over the years, and I’m running out of room to display it. Soon I’ll need to build an addition onto the house just for my oyster plates! When I arrive each summer, I spend several hours wandering from room to room, gazing upon these objects imbued with so many memories. Being back on the Cape marks the beginning of lazy days and good times spent with family and friends. That is what this house, and my collection, symbolizes to me. I’ve been collecting for a quarter of a century—too many pieces to count!— but those first three plates I found in the antiques barn down the road are still my favorite. I have warned everyone in my family: They can break anything in this house, even my heart, but not my oyster plates.

The more comfortable a space is, the more it will be used. This is an adage touted by many a knowledgeable interior designer, but it isn’t always applied to the open air. That is, unless Lloyd Flanders is involved. “This is why we focus on durability meets luxuriousness,” says Jessie Flanders, the company’s vice president of marketing. “Inexpensive outdoor pieces will last a year or two, but high-end furniture can endure for decades, with minimal maintenance and a superior level of comfort.” And, the brand has collections to suit nearly any aesthetic, from contemporary to Hamptons chic and the Southern in feel. But when it comes to the design concept, Jessie has another bit of advice: “A cohesive indoor-outdoor flow can be achieved through consistency in

color palette, materials or furniture shapes. A drastic change will make the spaces seem divided, so it’s best to stick with a common theme.”
SECRET TO LONGEVITY: LLOYD LOOM “Our proprietary Lloyd Loom® wicker is a natural fiber wicker fabric with long-lasting, high-performance Durium polyester coating for outdoor durability and flexibility,” Jessie says. “The continuous weave avoids burrs and cracking and eliminates visible material ends. It won’t fade over time due to sun exposure or rain and is available in 20 custom finishes.” Not to mention, Lloyd Loom products can be completely repainted to alter the look later. “Lloyd Loom offerings are handcrafted to be heirloom pieces that are passed down for generations.”
BE BOLDLY BESPOKE

Asked to share the latest favorites, Jessie points to color and creativity. “Consumers have access to an endless supply of design inspiration, and it has resulted in a love of customization, mixing and matching, and unique fabrics and finishes,” she says. “Our bolder finishes, like Peacock, Terracotta and Stillwater, are soaring in popularity.”
SOLSTICE solstice
The Solstice collection features clean lines, a high back, and a sleek frame that enhances the European inspired design. The fully upholstered look, and contemporary comfort make for an outdoor collection that will be enjoyed for generations.

There's a word for the way an expanse of doors blends the indoors and outdoors into one space. It's called biophilic design. But whatever you choose to call it, the effect is the same – your favorite spaces become better, sunnier, and filled with fresh air as they're transformed into a paradise of nature. Another defining element of doors made with rich wood interiors, aluminum clad exteriors, and no compromises. SierraPacificWindows.com

Growing up in sunny Miami, designer Constanza Collarte walked through dozens of orange groves on her way to school each day— all part of the charm found in this once-sleepy city by the sea. Fast forward a few years, and a couple more high-rise buildings later, a booming metropolis was born. But Collarte always knew she would one day return to her roots. After spending years living in New York and abroad, a 1930s Mediterranean-style residence in Coconut Grove—complete with a breathtaking outdoor area—ultimately lured her back home again. collarte.co What an amazing oasis! We like to think of it as our secret garden. Having a lush, enclosed outdoor space has made all the difference, especially recently! We spend all our time out here, whether we are having family over for dinner or hanging by the pool with our kids. One of the home’s selling points was the Fernando Wong– designed landscaping, and while we have added a few plantings here and there, his vision has remained. Constanza Collarte, founder of Collarte Interiors, sits outside her Coconut Grove abode near Miami. The table is set with a Zojora tablecloth and glasses, Penny Morrison plates, Laguiole flatware and flowers by Parrish Designs.

What about the interiors? As much as we live outdoors, our kitchen is the most heavily trafficked room, and we really tried to maximize the layout when the house was redesigned. It took a lot of planning, but the space is now open and filled with light from the doors leading out to the yard. The ‘back workings’ of the room, like the fridge, bar, pantry and storage, are also in one general area to allow for flow and functionality, which is key. Talk to us about the materials. Different layers and textures in a kitchen can add a lot. We worked with an amazing millworker who wire-brushed the cabinetry for a subtle effect. Everything from the creamy countertops to the pale wood has a hint of lilac, which is a nice connecting thread. On a trip to Morocco, I fell in love with Zellige tile—its imperfections and the way light plays off the surface—so we used them for the bar backsplash.

What’s your entertaining ethos? It’s all about indoor-outdoor living. We do a lot of entertaining alfresco—we even had my sister’s wedding out here! I’m a big collector, and I like to pick up little trinkets when I’m traveling, like salt cellars or textiles, to use on the table. The key to entertaining, for me, is continuously mixing and matching pieces. I must admit, we have a lot of the same people over, so I keep it fresh by using pieces in different ways, but the idea is to make it look effortless and easy. Tell us about the table. The exterior really informs my choices. Everything is green and lush outside, so it’s nice to throw this floral pink tablecloth down to play off the bright camelia flowers in bloom. My grandmother’s delicate embroidered napkins and bright glasses add a sweet note, but the Penny Morrison plates are really the highlight. I lived in London for a while and became quite obsessed with all those charming British prints and patterns! The kitchen features cabinetry and millwork by Hector and Hector, Sub-Zero refrigeration and a Wolf range. Dornbracht faucets are paired with Amerisink basins, while tiles from clé decorate the bar backsplash.

In Paul T. FAMILY AFFAIR “Chartreuse is my absolute favorite color,” effuses designer Samantha Liistro. A frequent staple across her interiors and personal wardrobe, it’s also the color of chamaecyparis trees that ring the Westport, Connecticut, garden, that her father, Paul T. Liistro, has lovingly cultivated over the past 35 years. A healthcare executive, sailor and self-taught landscape designer, Paul has poured his insatiable curiosity for the natural
world into this most resplendent of gardens. “When we purchased the property, I felt like Huckleberry Finn when he says he’s giving up on civilization and heading into the territory,” says Paul. Upon surveying the land—a virgin expanse of grass, forest and stream—he began sketching, and, like a tree taking root, the plot has since revealed itself in chapters. An all-pink rose garden (replete with a plumbed stone wall and dryad fountain) was inspired by the Elizabeth Park Conservancy in Hartford, snow-white Magnolia trees nod to Boston’s Commonwealth Avenue and a tidy pea gravel pavilion dotted with ornamental fountains and a table for two perpetuates a treasured memory. “I lived in Paris, near the
Luxembourg Gardens, while studying abroad at Parsons,” shares Samantha. When Paul came to visit at the end of the term, she knew just where to take him. “We were so inspired by all the lovely pools and places to sit. On the flight home, he took out his notebook and we began to sketch our own version.” Samantha fondly dubs the setting her “favorite place in the world,” and credits her father’s handiwork for much of her own approach to color and pattern. Recently, Paul and his wife Brenda hired their daughter to design a new first-floor addition housing a sumptuous primary bedroom suite. There, through an enormous picture window, Samantha has framed her father’s garden like a painting. samanthaliistro.com

CARVING A PATH Upon visiting his clients’ Woodside, California, property—a former equestrian farm with the beaten down dirt to prove it—landscape architect James Lord’s mission became clear. First, nurse the land back to health. Second, establish a thriving meadow. Along the way, a dreamy patchwork of soft rush, little bluestem and silver grass began to materialize. To enjoy the bounty, Lord, alongside partners Roderick Wyllie and Geoff di Girolamo, envisioned a series of crushed gravel footpaths undulating through the meadow like a soft breeze. Beyond providing the clients with their own parklike setting for daily strolls, the exuberant plant life has prompted the husband to embrace time-lapse photography, documenting such ephemera as the unfurling of cactus flowers. This luxuriant slowing, Lord believes, is imperative to mental health. “We blab on about the benefits of biophilia, but it’s all true! The alpha waves are going crazy when you’re out in nature,” he says. “This garden is curated with a spirit of delight and discovery, but there’s great calmness to it, too. It’s a world of its own.” sdisf.com

YOUNG AT HEART
“We were trying to create a bit of magic within the landscape—to invite imagination and play,” shares landscape architect Ed Hollander of this Southampton, New York, property. Inspired by the clients’ vibrant brood of young children, Hollander and residential studio director Melissa Reavis drew plans for a multi-faceted, experiential garden where sculptures seemingly dart amongst allées of pleached linden trees, a pollinator meadow teaming with joe-pye weed draws butterflies, and a life-sized chessboard offers entertainment, function and a focal point. A custom creation of sandstone and granite squares (in collaboration with the home’s interior designer Kelly Behun), the board easily morphs into a stylish party pavilion—the perfect springboard for a Gatsby-esque stroll through the fantasia beyond. “Everything is meant to be uncovered along a walk through this garden,” says Reavis. “Each time you turn a corner, a surprise is revealed.” hollanderdesign.com

For the dedicated team at Azul-Verde Design Group, successful landscapes are custom, timeless, regional and functional. “The goal is to create a design for the homeowner who desires an Arizona family retreat,” they say. “This is done by carefully crafting a solution to include a swimming pool, a patio and outdoor living spaces. These elements are then integrated into the site’s natural features and the home’s architectural flavor.” As for the role a homeowner plays in the creation of such an environment, the Azul-Verde Design Group recommends careful attention to and understanding of the client’s lifestyle and how it would, ideally, incorporate the great outdoors. This fundamental knowledge enables customization at the highest level, and thus, it is of distinct importance to the Azul-Verde team. “All people are different and all properties are different,” they add. “The more a client engages in the design and construction process, the better the end result will be.”

• Share tips for keeping outdoor environments vibrant, enduring and healthy. The key is proper installation from the start. This includes using quality plant materials that will flourish and providing proper irrigation— especially in Arizona! You should also have a long-term vision of how plant materials will come together as they grow. Installing quality hardscape materials that can endure intense heat is also vital. The importance of knowing how different design materials, both soft and hard, will stand up to the elements in your area cannot be overstated.
When people relax at home, it’s often the outdoor spaces—as much as the home’s architecture and design—that are most inviting. This sentiment inspires the awardwinning team at Desert Foothills Landscape. “Our clientele view their homes as luxury destinations,” says Jake Plocher, lead designer and vice president of sales. “With that in mind, we work to create environments that become a personal paradise where our clients can enjoy ‘resort living’ without leaving home.” The designers begin by touring the client’s property to gage their style, color and material preferences. These insights then help to inform their softscape and hardscape designs. From the pristine desert mountains to the pine forests and expansive skies, the Southwest was made for outdoor living. For Arizona-based architecture firm Urban Design Associates (UDA), outdoor living is an integral part of every luxury project. “We create spaces that flow between inside and out with deep covered patios and large expanses of glass,” says principal architect Jessica Hutchison-Rough. “Every room has access to outdoor living and correlates with Arizona’s gorgeous environments.” Beyond glass walls, UDA also brings the outside in by using visual connections like the continuation of a flooring material, and facilitating movement between spaces while keeping dust, bugs and temperature fluctuations outside. Hutchison-Rough adds, “The best approach to making outdoor spaces beautiful and functional is to keep them simple and in direct relationship to both the interior and the land.”

ometimes, the key to standout interiors is not adding elements, but rather subtracting those that detract from the design. Such was the case with an Arcadia dwelling purchased by a family who had recently uprooted themselves from Los Angeles. “The wife wanted to revamp her life, get out of the city and have more space for her kids,” designer Jess Diab says. “They wanted a different way of living.” The community-oriented neighborhood drew the couple to the residence, as did the pool, grassy area perfect for a bocce ball court and the potential for a home theater. “They liked the opulence and expansiveness of the house,” Diab says. But, to achieve the wife’s desire for a sleek and earthy vibe—“like a spa sanctuary,” the designer explains—the home’s over-the-top ornate features needed to be pared down. Thanks to her previous work on the clients’ California beach house—a project that they loved so much that they wept tears of joy the first time they saw the finished interiors—the family trusted Diab to take the reins. “The beach house was kind of the first step, like dipping their toes in,” the designer notes. Although they took a hands-off approach, the couple had one big ask: Their new home needed to be ready in time for their children to start school just three months later. “The timeline was intense,” Diab admits, “but a fun hoop to jump through.” While the tight schedule didn’t allow for extensive architectural changes, Diab, her colleague Kaley Wilson, site superintendent Ryan Tyner and project manager Jessica Lien did away with overly formal design details, such as the coffered ceiling in the dining room. “When we started this project, the home was very glam— think crystal chandeliers, lots of mirrors and decorative trim,” explains Lien. “We were trying to scale it back.” Adds Tyner, “It was like putting together a jigsaw puzzle every day.” Coating the walls, moldings and window trim in warm white helped to tone down the ornate milieu, creating a serene backdrop for curvaceous furnishings—like a massive serpentine mohair sofa and ottomans upholstered in shaggy Mongolian

sheepskin—that soften the linear architecture. “Texture is so important in making the space feel grounded and cozy,” Diab explains, pointing to a large textile wall hanging next to the living room’s marble fireplace. Likewise, a cream linen-covered dining bench with a rounded back complements a ribbed pedestal table in the breakfast room. And in the formal dining area, sculptural velvet-upholstered chairs surround an oak table atop a handwoven wool rug, creating a warm counterpoint to the black-and-white checkerboard flooring in the adjacent foyer. But the interior’s neutral palette is not without its exceptions. Inspired by their clients’ daughter’s sense of color, the designers upholstered her custom platform canopy bed in deep purple Belgian velvet accented with sheer rainbow drapery. “I’m always trying to push clients to go a little edgier,” Diab says. She also went bold in the powder room, convincing the homeowners to install a black-andwhite floral wallpaper that she balanced by painting the vanity, millwork and ceiling in a complementary black hue. “I told them, ‘Just do it,’ ” she says. “It’s a jewel box moment.” Considering the expansive outdoor space was a driving factor in the purchase of the home, Diab brought in landscape designer Steve Pine to refresh the site. He added a travertine fence with a custom steel gate inspired by the existing doors and windows and installed olive trees, trailing rose vines, desert grasses and live oaks to soften the look. Hedges and a citrus garden in the backyard create privacy and muffle traffic sounds. “The result fits within the Arcadian style, while also providing a unique transitional character to the house,” Pine explains. To meet the aggressive deadline, the crew pulled multiple all-nighters, the paint still drying as the furniture arrived. To ease their stress, Diab, Wilson and Tyner did yoga together on the marble floor in the front foyer, the sound of gongs streaming in the background. “It seemed to typify our collective delirium,” Diab laughs. It was all worthwhile when the clients arrived from their rental in Santa Barbara to see their new home for the first time, sparking tears of joy once again. “It’s always a huge reveal with them,” Diab says. “That’s what’s so fun about having a carte blanche scenario.”
Designed by Jess Diab and assembled by Princeton Construction, the console in the foyer of this Arcadia home is crafted with French limestone from Antiquities Imports. It adds a rustic quality to the marble checkerboard flooring and traditional wall moldings.

Considering moments both large and small, residential designer Agnieszka Jastrzebska, general contractor Brad Leavitt and designer Kristen Forgione worked together to fully personalize a Scottsdale family’s new home. Overlooking outdoor views, this quiet nook coated in Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace illustrates the team’s thoughtful considerations, complete with a custom-height desk and vintage chair.
S
o often good design comes down to a matter of proportion, where the difference of an inch marks the line between discomfort and true leisure. John and Melissa Donnelly dreamed of a custom home that would fit their life in measurements great and small, from the height of the windows to the depth of the family sofa. So when they found a Scottsdale property overlooking views of the McDowell Mountains, they were eager to start from scratch and build a place truly suited for their young family. “We literally left our old house with a toothbrush and a suitcase full of clothes,” laughs Melissa. “We wanted to start completely fresh.” The news delighted designer Kristen Forgione, whom the couple previously recruited to restyle their former residence. Even then, “we always kind of knew that home didn’t represent them,” recalls Forgione. “When we got the call that they wanted to build, obviously it was a great day.” Bringing residential designer Agnieszka Jastrzebska and general contractor Brad Leavitt on board ensured that personally tailored dimensions were built into the very bones of the couple’s new abode. Melissa and John, for example, loved the wide porches of traditional Craftsman houses— plenty of space “for one of those hanging bed swings that we’ve always wanted,” notes Melissa. But they also craved spaces that fluidly transitioned between indoors and out, especially to enjoy the gardens by landscape designer David Creech, who filled the property with desert-adapted plants like Texas sage, Arizona yellow bells and mesquite trees. “We wanted to develop a simple, classic landscape that would serve as a green backdrop and provide pops of seasonal color,” notes Creech of the lush layout. The final design combined a classic Craftsman front porch and more modern, streamlined interiors flooded with sunlight pouring from clerestory windows and sliding pocket glass doors. This required careful engineering in the vast great room, which spills onto the outdoor entertainment area. The two spaces are connected by a multislider system featuring open-corner glass doors and a pass-through kitchen window. “We had to build this entire structure off-site,” notes Leavitt. “We did a mock-up that included framing, cabinetry and countertops just to make sure that when it was delivered and installed, it would fit.”
Jastrzebska carefully considered measurements as well, playing with ceiling heights throughout so that “each space is proportionally designed for its function,” she explains. As one moves from room to room, the different elevations “create a certain emotion,” the residential designer says. For instance, the lowered beams of the dining room evoke a sense of intimacy, while the lofty expanse of the great room is ideal for large parties. Thoughtful calculations also guided the home’s millwork and furnishings. The couple both stand over 6 feet tall, “and the world was not made for people like us,” laughs Melissa, making averagesized counters and seats often feel awkward. The team raised most of the surfaces, including work desks and the 42-inch-high kitchen counters (the average bar height). When composing the gathering areas, Forgione also favored custom sofas and chairs. Creating pieces with symmetrical lines and curves, Forgione’s lead designer, Rachel McCloskey, made sure to incorporate longer seats so the couple could curl up comfortably. “As crazy as it sounds, it’s made a huge difference,” says Melissa. “They did an amazing job providing furniture that met our lifestyle and fit us.” A sense of ease runs throughout the interiors overall, with white oak flooring and an 18-foot porcelain fireplace façade painstakingly bookmatched by Leavitt’s team reflecting Forgione’s signature organic desert style. “Everything is really grounded and earthy,” explains the designer. “Through and through, we have natural tones with no big pops of color.” Think blond woods, bouclé upholstery and linens in shades of oatmeal and heather gray. Notes of black puncture the soft gradient of hues, especially in the minimalist light fixtures, cutting an elegant geometry against the ceilings. Guided by such considerate design, each space now feels calibrated for the family’s daily motions. The great room opens wide to the sunrise every morning while Melissa enjoys her ritual cup of tea. And the second-floor deck provides the perfect amount of shade in the late afternoons, where John enjoys long chats with their daughter, both swaying together in their custom swing chairs. The house even accommodates the family’s beloved Yorkies, who can easily dart through their own door. In every square inch “this home works for our family,” says Melissa. “It truly feels comfortable.”

The grandeur of the great room required appropriately scaled furnishings to match, while also embodying the home’s relaxed spirit. To achieve this balance, Forgione incorporated custom pieces like the broad sectional, chaise lounge and the 82-inch white oak coffee table—all designed in-house by Rachel McCloskey. Twin dark wicker accent chairs from TheLifestyledCo and a two-tier RH chandelier add a welcome contrast to the light palette.

TURNING UP THE HEAT Science and nature spark artist Alexandra Bowers’ creative journey. W R I T T E N BY M A I L E P I N G E L P H O T O G R A P H Y BY B R A N D O N S U L L I VA N
T
his is a soul calling,” says Alexandra Bowers, whose pyrographic artworks have garnered attention from local curators and collectors alike. Born and raised in Scottsdale, Bowers has witnessed the region “grow outward, not upward,” and watching the landscape paved over for development has inspired her work. “I’m on a mission to educate people and create an emotional connection with the natural world,” she explains. From her studio at Megaphone PHX, a multidimensional arts venue established by muralist Andy Brown in the Warehouse District, Bowers draws local flora and fauna— night-blooming flowers, seed pods, hawk moths and diamondbacks among them—with a biologist’s eye. Each work is so finely rendered that her medium, a soldering iron, may come as a surprise. In fact, it was something of a revelation for her too. “Pyrography found me,” she says, recalling the aha moment of watching a soldering artist at an outdoor market in Italy. Bowers begins each piece as a pencil sketch before burning the image into a maple or birch wood panel, hand-crafted for her by fellow artist Tony Zeh. “Then I start itching to add color,” she says of the next step, in which she works wax pigments into the wood to create a watercolor-like effect. The artist’s work is, in essence, an ongoing conversation with others. Her solo show at Mesa Arts Center, “A Murmuration of Found Feathers in Flight,” featured over 800 pieces based on shared photographs. “I asked my community to send me photos of feathers from hikes and errands,” Bowers says. “I wanted them to get outside, look at their world, tell me the story of when and where they found the feather, and what it represents.” Communication is also at the center of her upcoming group show, “Art in Medicine,” a collaboration between artists and medical researchers organized by Bentley Gallery and the Phoenix Biomedical Campus. “As artists, our job is to work with the researchers and bridge a narrative with the public to break down complicated science,” she explains. While conversing with her community is central to Bowers’ work, it is times of solitude that often bring about inspiration. Whether hiking a favorite local trail or taking her goldendoodle, Lincoln, for a walk, time in her treasured desert landscape always reveals new ideas. “Outside, I’m in a place of meditation,” she says. “That’s when creativity strikes.”
Using a soldering iron (below), Alexandra Bowers creates pyrographic works inspired by the natural world. She begins each piece with a sketch (bottom, left), finding inspiration in such things as collected feathers (left) and moths (bottom, right).

The charms of a beloved architectural stalwart infuse a contemporary dwelling.
AMERICAN RAMBLER
Architecture, Home Builder and Landscape Architecture: Cavin Costello, The Ranch Mine Interior Design: Claire Costello, The Ranch Mine
C
ontemporary architecture often gets a bad rap for being cold and austere, especially when it comes to homes. But while architect Cavin Costello and his wife, designer Claire Costello, might be known for their ultramodern, minimalist designs, an inherent warmth shines through each and every one of them. Their secret lies in a set of core values—but not their own. “We always ask our clients for mission statements for their homes,” explains Cavin. Gina and Travis Cooper, who were looking to build a new dwelling for themselves and their two daughters on a secluded lot in Paradise Valley, really took to the concept. “I love Cavin’s approach,” Gina says, “because it asks things like ‘how do you live your best life in the house? What’s your ideal morning like? Where do you spend the most time? What’s the motto of your home?’ That was genius.” The couple’s mission statement for their new abode was a simple one: a place to bring together friends and family to break bread, featuring open and light-filled spaces with a connection to the outdoors. As avid fans of architectural history, Cavin and Claire quickly realized that what the couple were asking for was similar to midcentury American ranch houses or ramblers. “Those were ultimately about informal indoor-outdoor living, sunshine and family,” Cavin says. “Making that connection really gave us a nice starting point.” While the end result remains true to the Costellos’ signature contemporary aesthetic, the structure embodies many elements of the traditional rambler. A gabled volume at the home’s center distinguishes the entrance and main living area, flanked by low, linear flat roofs. The bedroom wing is separate from the living areas, while large glass windows and sliding glass doors flood the spaces with daylight and cross ventilation. The expansive, unconventionally sized flag lot allowed the designers to create a dwelling that stretches out into the landscape, drawing visitors into the courtyard’s embrace.

Most important to Gina was that the kitchen be at the heart of the home. “I grew up in a Latin family—my dad is Italian, my mom is Mexican and everyone gathers around the kitchen,” she says. “I love to cook, and I wanted a place where we could all come together.” With this in mind, Cavin positioned the kitchen at the center of the architectural H layout, making it a pivot point between the indoor and outdoor spaces as well as the bedroom and living wings. “Our previous work really spoke to Gina,” Claire says of their design for the interiors. “She liked the combination of white with some high drama moments of black, wood or exposed concrete.” And that feeling of warmth inherent to The Ranch Mine was brought in via neutral browns, tans and coppers. With a family in the furniture business and a mother who had worked as an interior designer, Gina had a keen vision for the home. So, while the Costellos gave her advice on the color palette and location of certain pieces, she sourced many of the finishes and furnishings herself. “This was my true time to do it my way and really pick every single piece with a lot of thoughtfulness,” Gina says. When it came time to choose tile, the Costellos assisted with a few guidelines. “Because the midcentury modern aesthetic was something that appealed to Gina, one of our general rules was the use of different geometric shapes as a guiding principle to her tile selection,” Claire explains. “You have the simple palette of neutral color, stone and wood, but you can really differentiate the scale, texture and interest from room to room by changing the geometries.” While many designers might have felt nervous handing such creative decisions over to the client, the Costellos didn’t stress with Gina. “You never know what the clients will choose,” Cavin says. “But she picked a lot of great things. Once she had the parameters of what we were working with, she really filled in every piece excellently.” Unsurprisingly, the feeling of admiration is mutual. “They really captured my vision,” Gina says. “From what we expected to what we got, it’s just a dream come true.”
Homeowner Gina Cooper liked the high-peaked ceilings and wood-and-metal palette of Scandinavian residences. Husband-and-wife team Cavin and Claire Costello of The Ranch Mine helped her bring that aesthetic to her own Paradise Valley abode. The concrete for the living room walls was sourced from Phoenix Concrete while the wide-plank European white oak flooring throughout the home by En Bois Flooring is from Arizona Hardwood Floor Supply.

Gina’s background in fashion was a significant influence on her choices for the interiors. “If I were to look at how I dress and how I’ve dressed the house, I think it’s very similar,” she says. “Basic neutral colors with a little pop.” In the living room, a Herman Miller Eames lounge chair and ottoman sit alongside a Rove Concepts sectional and a Sunpan threepiece coffee table from Perigold.
