LETTER

What Sustains Us

For this issue on The Power of Architecture, I’ve been reflecting on its purpose and meaning. Aside from shelter, security and function, architecture serves as a spatial arrangement that forges communities and speaks to the culture of a place. At best, the spaces that surround us enrich the quality of interactions we have within them. It’s the reason we feel peaceful while sitting by a poolside loggia or happiness when ascending a stairwell with a view of nature. Our homes, and the buildings we encounter in our daily lives, also reveal much about how we see ourselves. The potency of architecture lies in its ability to innovate through materiality and design, to push us to think differently about our environment, and, most importantly, to lift the human spirit.

The most innovative dishwasher ever. From the world’s premier sustainable appliance brand.

With CornerIntense®, the industry’s first rectangular-motion spray arm, Beko’s 36, 38 and 39 model dishwashers clean dishes like never before. But they also use half the water and two-thirds the energy. It’s the most significant breakthrough in dishwasher technology in nearly 100 years. Along with this revolutionary approach, Beko’s new line includes custom panel options with fully flush installation and industry-standard dimensions. It also boasts a suite of impressive features. beko.com/us-en bekoappliancesusa beko_usa bekoappliancesusa

• The EverClean™ filter automatically rinses with pressurized water to remove food residue and debris, keeping it cleaner up to four times longer.

• DeepWash™ technology uses three water-adjustable jets to make sure tall bottles or jars with narrow openings get the extra powerful clean they need, too. • Next up, SelfDry™ unseals and opens the door on its own, letting air in to dry dishes naturally without the use of additional energy. Oh, and did we mention? These dishwashers are so quiet (the 39 model’s operating sound level is 39dBa), you’ll need the red light that shines on the floor to know they’re running. They’re the planet’s new best friend—and yours too. Bring your Beko home, starting in late May 2022.

Cleaner dishes. Cleaner planet. Cleaner conscience. Beko’s mission is simple, yet impressive. It aims to redefine what is possible in terms of performance, reduce the use of natural resources and price within the reach of everyone who wants to lead a healthy and eco-friendly life. It seems a tall order, but Beko has done it time and again, and its latest endeavor champions the trio of intentions.

Rising to the challenge of the dirtiest dishes, glassware, pots and pans, Beko dishwashers conquer it all for more peace of mind.

LAUNCH

TULUM COLLECTION BY STYLEMEGHD While 2020 brought its share of challenges, it also heralded a few silver linings—and we’re not just talking about working from home. As it turns out, that was also the year of inspiration for the first product line from StyleMeGHD, the retail offshoot of the Scottsdale-based interior design firm Guided Home Design. “I had the pleasure of visiting Tulum in the fall of 2020, and by the time I left, I had found a new love for this tucked-away jewel on Mexico’s east coast,” says StyleMeGHD CEO Kristen Hancock. The result of this love affair is the Tulum Collection. Launched in February, it incorporates the sort of textiles and materials you’d embrace on a Mexican holiday—think linen, rattan, cane, rope, stone and ceramic. Notable pieces include textured plates, folding beach chairs, rustic linens and earthy vases that evoke Tulum’s eco-chic vibe. StyleMeGHD followed this debut with its print collection in March. These original photographs, produced by the StyleMeGHD team while in Mexico, are some of Hancock’s favorite pieces. All of this, however, is just the beginning. “We recently traveled to Joshua Tree, California, in an effort to style, capture and launch the second of our destination collections,” Hancock reveals. Stay tuned for more vacation vibes. stylemeghd.com

WHY: Whether it’s a collection of objets d’art or an interior space, @LifeCreated celebrates the essence of the perfectly composed shot. IN HER WORDS: “I have a passion for the artistic side of still photography and small businesses, so connecting with budding photographers and creative brands is always a gift.”

LORI CLARKE

There’s something enticingly down-to-earth about Lori Clarke, principal of Lori Clarke Design. Maybe it’s her Kansas City roots. Maybe it’s the fact that she came to design as a second career, after studying fashion and then staying home to raise her three daughters. Whatever the reason, Clarke is one of those designers who is as likable for her personality as her work. And that work, whether it’s a French château-style estate or a reimagined brownstone in Central Phoenix, manages to be both richly detailed and decidedly unfussy—kind of like Clarke herself. To capture that relaxed vibe, Luxe sat down with the designer to learn her top picks for where to rest and recharge around town. loriclarkedesign.com

BONNER DAVID GALLERIES Everyone loves a birthday, and Bonner David Galleries, which celebrates its milestone 20th anniversary in Old Town this year, is no exception. The past two decades have brought plenty of change for owners Christi Bonner Manuelito and Clark David Olson. For starters, they opened a sister gallery in New York in early 2020. And their repertoire of represented artists has grown to include upwards of 30 global creators who specialize in genres ranging from figurative to realistic art. Yet other things have stayed the same, like the gallery’s resolute egalitarianism: Bonner David is known for warmly welcoming new and seasoned collectors alike. Here, Manuelito and Olson share their perspective on what 20 years in the art world has brought. bonnerdavid.com Describe how your place in the art scene has evolved. After just five years, we found the need to double in size, which allowed us to be truer to our original theme of having traditional and contemporary art side by side. We understand that tastes are varied, and we want people to understand that they don’t have to love only one style of art. How are you celebrating your 20th anniversary? Twenty years is a long time, and we’re fortunate to have thousands of collectors who’ve purchased work from Bonner David. Instead of having just a single event, we’re hosting a series of four celebrations in September, October, November and December to focus on the different types of art we represent. For example, one will be a sculpture show, one for landscapes, one for figurative artists and one for abstract art. What’s next for Bonner David? We’re always evolving. We just celebrated two years at our second location, half a block from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Our goal there is to elevate our artists by giving them a much broader presence. And we have a few secrets in our pocket that we’re not quite ready to reveal.

CHECK IN AMBIENTE RESORT

They say good things come to those who wait, and Ambiente delivers on this promise. As North America’s first landscape hotel, this adults-only property in Sedona pushed back its opening date from mid-January to May 2022—a delay that has only served to build anticipation. The resort consists of 40 cube-shaped accommodations, referred to as “Atriums.” The collection appears to float over the landscape, with each Atrium perched upon stilts and crafted out of charcoal-colored metal that seems to blend into the surroundings. Floor-to-ceiling bronze-tinted glass affords nearly 360-degree views over Coconino National Forest and those red-rock monoliths for which Sedona is famous. Equally important, however, is the landscape architecture by Green Magic Landscaping, which not only sought to preserve every native tree on the three-acre property but also reactivate an ancient waterway that coils through the land. All this makes for a one-of-a-kind experience, even without considering the luxe amenities. In addition to smart-room technology, minimalist design and organic touches like live-edge wooden coffee tables, nearly every Atrium boasts a private rooftop deck with a fire pit and daybed where you can literally sleep under the stars. ambientesedona.com

HOMEOWNERS WHO PRIORITIZE HOLISTIC HEALTH IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS ARE LOOKING TO THE SOUTH—WHERE WELLNESS COMMUNITIES AND AGRIHOODS ARE RISING FAST. W R I T T E N B Y K AT H R Y N O ’ S H E A- E VA N S

It’s not often that a kid’s birthday party will change your life. But for Monica Olsen, who hosted her son’s fourth fête at Serenbe, a wellness community 32 miles from her then-home in Atlanta, it was a transformative experience. “We had a pony party at the gorgeous stables which were designed by architect Peter Block and it was this magical day,” she recalls. “We thought, ‘Maybe we should just stop at the real estate office while we’re here…’ They pointed out a house, we bought it and basically never left!”

LUXESOURCE.COM

Founded in 2005, Serenbe is tailormade to help residents live their best lives. It’s outfitted with a new 3,000-squarefoot spa, yoga studio, swim club, artist in residence program, lush hiking trails and many more wellness-geared elements that make it idyllic to say the least. And, it’s gaining traction: The community had around 100 residents when Olsen purchased her home in 2009, and boasts 1,000 today. All properties there—including townhouses, cottages and estates, most of which look more like

they’re in Scandinavia than Georgia— are EarthCraft certified. (Translation: they’re energy and water efficient, saving 30 percent of the energy costs of a typical home.) And Serenbe is not the only Southern community that epitomizes the notion that health is wealth. “Agrihood”—planned developments that mingle sustainablybuilt real estate and farm-to-your-owntable amenities—is booming. Community & Farm sits perched along the French Broad River and features a four-acre organic farm. Every home here is required to use a geothermal heating and cooling system, which comes with a hidden perk in the sweltering Southern summers: no HVAC noise buzzing. Broker and owner Allison Smith notes, “Pandemic migration has taken property sales through the roof as major lifestyle changes allow people to now work from anywhere.” Meanwhile, at Tennessee’s 5,200-acre hotel and residence Blackberry Mountain, sister property to the iconic Blackberry Farm, the lucky few private homeowners

on premises have access to wellness offerings that range from sound bathing to an aerial yoga platform. And yes—the untrammeled wilderness is a huge part of the allure too. Only 20 miles from Charleston is the new Kiawah River, where half of the 2,000-acre waterfront community will remain entirely wild and untouched. Protecting the natural world here is vitally important to this agrihood, which includes The Goatery—a farm dedicated

to artisanal goat milk products—beehives and pasture-raised cattle as well as myriad farms for produce. Residents can also enjoy maritime forest trails where everything from bald eagle pairings to migrating monarch butterflies are frequently spotted. “We love the community and people,” Kiawah River homeowner Megan Hendricks says. “But most of all, we love the wildlife we get to see every day while walking on the paths by the river.”

ARCHITECT THOMAS KLIGERMAN REFLECTS ON THE ENDURING APPEAL OF AN INNATELY AMERICAN VERNACULAR. A S T O L D T O G R AC E B E U L E Y H U N T

When I close my eyes and imagine a house, I picture the sounds it makes: footsteps on the staircase, slamming screen doors, faint voices from downstairs while falling asleep. If someone asked me where I’d choose to live out my days, I’d say a Shingle style home because they reverberate like a drum. My connection to buildings has always been visceral. By the time I left for college, I had lived in 10 houses— saltboxes up and down Connecticut; apartments in New York, London and Paris; an adobe in New Mexico. My father’s work moved us often, but summers were always for sailing in Rhode Island, which is where my love for shingled homes cemented. Shingle style architecture emerged in Newport in 1876, combining the simple forms of early Colonial buildings with the quirks of Victorian Stick style. The 1880s were fascinating years—everything was brave and new. During this time, rooms grew from small, symmetrical boxes into episodic progressions with

abstract shapes and enormous doors that opened onto terraces. These homes weren’t trying to be Italianate villas or French chateaus. Here was an American style. I’m grouped with classical architects, but I’m a closet modernist who is always pushing to see how modern traditional homes can become—yet I never want to lose sight of what people love about them. Shingles are a medium that encourages daring design because they’re so lightweight. You can have soaring cantilevers and chimneys that look like great blades dropped from the heavens. With shingles, you can make a home look like the sail of a boat filled with air. Have you ever sat on the porch of a shingled house in the rain? There’s this wonderful, cozy scent from the cedar that brings comfort like a favorite sweater. That’s the thing; no matter who you are, whether you live in Santa Fe or Seal Harbor, the draw of home is strong for Americans. And Shingle style buildings don’t look like houses, they look—and feel—like homes.

Parisian designer Vincent Darré’s fantastical collection with OKA includes the Spiral Lamp & Shade, XIV Mirror, Gemini Vase and Lyric Console Table.

LUXESOURCE.COM

As British retailer OKA expands its horizons stateside—it arrived in Dallas last November and will open in Westport, Connecticut, in September—a new collection with French designer Vincent Darré is next on the agenda. Darré, a former fashion heavyweight, captured the imagination of Sue Jones, Co-Founder and Creative Director of OKA, with his Cocteau-esque interiors. “Seeing Vincent’s work in the flesh excited me about the prospect of a collaboration,” recalls Jones after an early visit to Darré’s Paris atelier. “Everything he touches has a sense of drama to it.” For the duo’s tightly edited four-piece collection, Darré channeled OKA’s aristocratic-meets-bohemian style—a look that reminds him of photographer Cecil Beaton’s work—while also referencing the Neoclassical era and romantic 18th-century gardens. The result? Furnishings that work just as well in a group as they do individually. Included are a marble-topped console supported by ancient ruin-inspired legs, a column-like floor lamp (its spiral shade reminds Jones of a Philip Treacy hat), a black-and-white Grecian face vase and a mirror embellished with musical instruments and starfish. The playful collaboration allowed Jones and Darré to have a little fun while still championing true craftsmanship and creative ingenuity. oka.com

Lasting Lineage Sara Hayat Design

Design is in Sara Hayat’s DNA. Since the 1870s, her family’s company M. Hayat & Bros. has produced luxury furnishings for everyone from royal households to prominent clients, including John F. Kennedy and his famous White House rocker. So, it comes as no surprise that the need to be creative eventually struck. Setting aside a career in finance, Colorado-based Hayat set her sights on made-to-order furniture with a debut collection comprising coffee, writing and dining tables, chairs and sofas, and inventive modular seating. Each of the designer’s pieces, which have their genesis in detailed drawings, are handbuilt by her family’s longstanding artisans in Peshawar, Pakistan. While her materials lean traditional (mahogany, marble, cane, brass inlay, leather and velvet), her forms (geometric, floral, stacked and beveled) are anything but ordinary. Hayat studied joinery and detailing techniques by researching her

family’s archival catalogues in addition to referencing some of the world’s greats— Oscar Niemeyer and Pierre Paulin for further inspiration. She also became fascinated with contemporary automobile and fashion styles, making note of what she loved and which aesthetics she responded to emotionally. “Intentional design has the ability to uplift, and I want my furniture to do just that.” And her Tetris-inspired modular sofa provides a plum example. “People should be creative in how they use it,” Hayat explains, noting that the piece can morph from a sleek living room sofa into a fantastical object for play when deconstructed. “These pieces should dazzle, anchor us in the moment and remind us of what we can be.” As the newly minted furniture designer begins using her own pieces at home, she can’t help but reflect on what her parents instilled in her growing up. “My mother always believed that you should surround yourself with items that make you happy.” A legacy Hayat will surely continue to uphold. sara-hayat.com

Feeling Blue

Delft by Plain English is a five-piece tile collection featuring designs inspired by antique tiles that decorate the founder’s own home. Children Playing I (background) and Sea Creatures (inset).

LUXESOURCE.COM

Sometimes inspiration is right under one’s nose. Or in the case of Tony Niblock, co-founder of kitchen manufacturer Plain English, it was right over his Aga range, where an assortment of antique Delft tiles is proudly displayed. Niblock first started collecting the blueand-white squares after spotting them at a historic house in Yoxford, England, in the 1990s. Now, that passion has grown beyond adorning his own home and evolved into the company’s latest offering, Delft by Plain English—a collection of handmade, hand-painted tiles inspired by his findings. “There’s a freshness about the color combination, isn’t there?” posits co-founder Katie Fontana. “And it’s so wonderful that there’s been a renewed interest and understanding around Delft tiles.” The tin-glazed earthenware tiles have been synonymous with the Netherlands since the 17th century when, impervious to heat or water, they became a functional— and charming—wall decoration for homes, public buildings and palaces across Europe. Plain English’s interpretation features figurative depictions of daily life, like children skipping, as well as fantastical scenes including a mermaid admiring her reflection—all in keeping with eclectic British style that is now back in vogue. “There is a naivete about them that people find appealing,” remarks Niblock. plainenglishdesign.co.uk

NATURE IS INSPIRING

NEW TRENDS The industry looks to Las Vegas Market to showcase the latest and greatest, and this summer’s takeaways have one thing to say: design right now is all about organic influences. Three industry luminaries from LVMKT’s Ahead of the Curve panel share their perspectives.

EARTHY TEXTURES

We have seen a shift from glazed and glossy materials to ceramic and earthenware ones. Wood grains with apparent texture, marbles and limestone, indoor plants, stones and other organic features are adding depth and character to spaces that have been more minimalistic up until now. Rather than museum-level polished surfaces, textured plasters that appear perfectly imperfect are proving a current favorite. Sarah Kennedy | CLB Architects Jackson, Wyoming

BIOPHILIC VIEWPOINTS

The use of natural ral materials, like wood, stone or raffia, and spaces that include natural geometries, like fractals and curves, can be highly evocative and satisfy the human need for connecting with our wild world. We are craving that, making biophilic design the mindset of the moment. We take a sum-of-the-parts arts approach, employing the atmosphere created with light, architecture, access to nature and furnishings ishings and accessories that evoke nature in our designs. We’ve been finding a lot of unique piecess that literally mimic nature and others that are more subtle. Whether they exhibit the golden ratio o or the Fibonacci sequence, such designs simply make us feel good and balanced. Currey & Company Neptune Chandelier

ARTFUL GLOW

A big trend we’re noticing this year is demand for organic lamps. Today’s modern lighting takes on sculptural shapes and gravitydefying designs to create a new type of light source—one that is functional and a work of art at the same time. This type of movement-filled design is a beautiful way to bring a lovely glow to a room, imbuing the ambience with not only light, but character. Monica Wilcox | M Wilcox Design, Allen, Texas

STAYING POWER

After 16 years, designer Dana Wolter knew it was time to upgrade her Birmingham, Alabama, kitchen. She soon whipped up a pretty, elegant and detail-filled scheme, but above all else, the space needed to stand the test of time. “I like to think of this room as timeless—a kitchen that will age well and get better the more you use it,” Wolter explains. To bring her well-aging vision to life, she opted for eternally exquisite materials like

Calacatta gold marble countertops and unlacquered brass fittings, all of which patina with use and become more beautiful. Wolter also gave careful consideration to several special details, including delicate fluted cabinetry, a hidden marble spice rack above the range and a functional trough sink carved directly into the island. As Wolter learned first-hand, renovating your own space certainly comes with its perks. The designer tweaked and customized every element to align with how she wanted the space to function. One especially lovely area came about from moving walls around: A graceful display niche that houses silver and crystal tableware frequently used for meals.

Here, delicate curved stone motifs on the shelves echo detailing on the center island to tie the areas together. In contrast to the light, airy kitchen, Wolter had a bit more fun in the pantry, where a moody palette and graphic marble slab surfaces add a touch of drama. “My intention with the pantry was to repeat some of the finishes and treatments in the kitchen, and to make the rooms flow,” the designer explains. “But at the same time, I wanted the pantry to be a little bolder.” Ample storage, refrigerator drawers, and a second dishwasher allow the space to function as a workhorse and keep messes out of sight. A successful passion project, indeed! danawolterinteriors.com

TROPICAL SWING

Interior designer Margaret Kaywell’s client sought an office space of a different color. Namely, one that would inspire future ventures, and host friends and associates for work and play alike. He found his answer in a run-down bungalow in West Palm Beach, which Kaywell—in collaboration with MP Design & Architecture and Tim Givens Building & Remodeling—imagined as a sumptuous private clubhouse. Reworking the layout from the studs, Kaywell conceived a gracious foyer with velvet banquettes flanked by a conference-meets-dining room on one side, and a billiards room on the other. The floor plan also includes a private office, powder

FULL HOUSE

Designer Nina Magon faced a unique brief when it came to the media room of a young Houston-based family. “The husband is a serious cards player and wanted a designated place to call his poker room. His wife said, ‘Okay fine, but you need to share it with me and your child!’” So spurred plans for a space that bridges the divide between moody man cave, elegant lounge and kid-friendly play space. “It’s a universally fun room; it works for everything,” notes Magon, pointing to the custom six seat table (the exact headcount for poker night) and adjacent TV area with its wipeable ottoman that rolls away to accommodate a playmat. But the real hero of the space is the custom cabinetry, painted Sherwin-Williams’ Seaworthy, which chicly stashes vestiges of life with a toddler, or a gamesman, as the case may be. ninamagon.com

LAST HURRAH

A family’s early 1800s farmhouse in Litchfield, Connecticut, was a ground-up project—of sorts. Over the course of six years, and led by designer Susan Bednar Long, renovations were tackled phase-by-phase. By the time they set their sights on the unfinished attic, both designer and client had developed a keen sense of what was still missing—a workhorse. On the wish list: A well-appointed office, a gentleman’s lounge for cigar smoking and game nights, a sleep loft for family visits and a bevy of storage. While embracing the original beams and warm wood floors, Long set about modernizing the space with a cozy, masculine mood. Notably, in building out the crooked chimney, she created a stylish built-in

bar-meets-shelving unit wrapped in metallic Hermès wallpaper, which ingeniously serves as a partition between the lounge and office areas. Utilizing every solitary inch (while preserving an airy feel thanks to precisely scaled furnishings), the designer squeezed in a comfy window banquette, an 11-foot-long desk, a flatscreen TV and a sectional. Storage space abounds as well, including the antique home’s original, rehabilitated cubbies that now enclose back-of-house office supplies, camping gear and seasonal storage. “Only the pretty stuff is on view,” notes Long, adding, in the ultimate stamp of approval, “This was never an essential space, but it has become just that.” sblonginteriors.com

Texture. We add texture to walls with a wide variety of materials such as wallpaper, wood and tile. Over the past 10 years, Katherine Mueller has approached each space with the same level of care and thoughtfulness. “Even smaller renovations can create a big impact on the way spaces function,” Mueller says. Her clients often want their new environments to include two important functions: increased access to the outdoors and additional storage. “And with most kitchen renovations, we end up opening the walls to create “must-have” entertaining space while letting the beautiful Arizona scenery in,” she adds. Beyond the common requests, Mueller also loves creating customized spaces like wine rooms, in-law suites and bunk rooms that are unique to her clients’ lifestyles and add an extra layer of function that makes the home feel truly luxurious. According to Mueller, it all starts with one vital step: “Our signature service is listening to our clients’ wants, needs and desires.”

A big part of KT Tamm Inc’s renovation process is showing clients options when an original design feature they want to keep may hinder the project’s overall vision. “Sometimes it is difficult for clients to let go of the past,” says KT Tamm, namesake president and founder of the full-service design firm. “Rather than say, ‘that won’t work,’ we’d say, ‘have you thought of this alternative.’” Such a thoughtful approach speaks to Tamm’s understanding that every project has its own unique voice and soul. Through active listening, communicating and collaborating, Tamm and her team glean clients’ lifestyles, business needs, aesthetic values and budgets—all to create experiences that remain true to the original intent. “Believing that interior design should be able to stand the test of time, we key in on the longevity of our designs by mixing multiple styles with delicate restraint,” she says.

“My service is my portfolio. It is the end result of highend level design collaboration, knowledge and skill!”

A WELL-ROUNDED APPROACH When homeowners undertake a renovation, they’re often responsible for communicating with a long list of trade professionals. Luxury Remodels Company removes this pressure by providing precise, comprehensive remodeling services. “As a company, we take a project from start to finish under one roof,” Poprawa says. “This allows our clients to enjoy the entire remodeling experience while working with one expert point of contact.”

LUXURY REMODELS COMPANY 480.550.8774 | luxremodels.com |

In their quest to create balance, Luxury Remodels Company has an appreciation for both trending and traditional design elements. A current trend the firm has embraced is the beauty and durability of wide-plank, white oak engineered wood flooring, while they continue to preserve the unique architectural details found in classic Arizona homes and enhance existing design elements their clients cherish.

luxuryremodelscompany

For the professionals at Luxury Remodels Company, the key to a successful renovation lies in one concept: balance. In Arizona, this means balancing old and new, warm and bright, and indoors and outdoors. “We’re always able to work with a client’s existing elements,” says Jerzy Poprawa, principal of Luxury Remodels Company. “This provides a personal touch that adds interest and is something homeowners always enjoy.” When it comes to refreshing the brown, earthy elements found in traditional Arizonan homes, Poprawa and his team are experts at creating aesthetic harmony that doesn’t require a complete overhaul. “It’s a challenge to blend the old and new,” he shares. “But we make it our mission to design and build spaces that look and feel seamless.” When asked how they are able to accomplish such balanced, thoughtful and well-designed spaces, Poprawa credits his firm’s 360-degree approach.

“We make it our business to get homeowners thinking outside of the box while remaining focused on their overall aesthetic.”

or architect Andy Byrnes, the measure of a building is in the details. “It’s that opportunity you have in architecture to make something extraordinary out of different pieces coming together— when steel touches glass, when wood touches steel,” he says. “What you do with those moments is critical in design.” It was this approach that resonated with the owners of a property overlooking Paradise Valley. The couple—he is a prominent Chicago-based commercial real estate developer, she is a retired consultant and acquisition specialist—first met Byrnes at their newly acquired site, where, as the wife recalls, “Andy was as excited by the opportunity as we were.” But this initial meeting wasn’t a complete blind date. “We had long been fans of Andy Byrnes,” the wife adds. “He is known for his mastery of steel, glass and concrete, and we were drawn to the fact that he builds what he designs.” Active in warm-weather outdoor pursuits, and with a growing family, the couple wanted a strikingly modern gathering place in the desert to serve as their own private resort. To capture that luxe vacation feel, Byrnes, working with project manager Marissa Mendoza and superintendent Kelton Spresser, pushed the house back on the site toward Camelback Mountain—“a fairly good slice of excavation,” the architect notes, that added foreground to 180-degree vistas of the valley and surrounding landscape. Although views now wrap the structure, whose concrete-andvintage-galvanized-metal cladding makes it a distinctive presence on the slope, its orientation and courtyard plan still afford the homeowners a sense of privacy. A custom glazing system of floor-to-ceiling sliding glass window walls and large pivot doors virtually dissolves the visual barrier between inside and out. The living room, office and kitchen open to the pool terrace, while the primary suite—on the other side of the main floor—has views north, south and west to the Praying Monk. It feels separate from the rest of the home, as though it’s actually part of the mountainside. Lower down the slope, a two-

bedroom casita shares that same sheltered atmosphere, thanks to its west-facing views. Continuing from the exterior, the walls throughout are a mix of cast-in-place, boardformed concrete and drywall. One exception to this through line is the main hallway to the living room, where richly hued vertical oak slats make up one wall and a large, commissioned artwork the other. In a unifying move, oak slats are also used in the dining room, this time installed horizontally across the ceiling, lowering it to create an intimate effect. Working alongside Byrnes and project architect Drew Bausom, the wife was integral to the effort. She directed the interiors—as she had for their other residences in Chicago and Aspen— selecting all finishes and furnishings with a goal of “softening the somewhat masculine aspects of the architecture and the dominant material elements,” she explains. In particular, her choices of rift-cut oak flooring, natural stone and indirect lighting impart a warmth and serenity to the main living spaces. She also tempered the angularity of the structure by selecting furnishings with more rounded profiles, upholstered primarily with textured fabrics in shades of white. Inside and out, the various vignettes she composed telegraph frills-free comfort and reflect her mantra: “Minimal color, no cute, no clutter.” Landscape architect Stephen Bardorf designed the surrounding environment with an eye toward preserving as much of the existing rock ground cover, boulders and native cacti as possible. However, the gardens, including the expanse of cacti that covers the roof of the casita, are still manicured. “You can try to recreate the Sonoran Desert, or you can do what we did: Don’t hide that it’s an obviously man-made interjection in nature, more geometrical and organized,” says Byrnes. There were no half measures taken in the construction of the abode. At one point, the husband, comparing the schedule to those in his line of work, joked that he could have completed a high-rise in the same amount of time. Hyperbole? Perhaps not, given the vastly different building types and the processes involved. But in terms of the kind of supreme livability their new house affords, there is simply no comparison.

A polyptych by local artist Loren Yagoda lines the 20-foot southern wall that runs from the entry of this Paradise Valley home to the living room; complementing it is a panel of vertical oak slats. Echoing the exterior cladding, architect and builder Andy Byrnes primarily used board-formed concrete walls throughout.

“The scale of the main living space demanded fewer furnishings, but they needed to be oversized,” says the wife, who led the interiors. In the living room, bordered on two sides by steel-framed windows and glass doors, a Poltrona Frau sectional and ottoman trimmed in leather are joined by a coffee table designed by The Construction Zone. The oak floors are from American Classic Flooring. On the pool terrace is a grouping of teak furnishings by RH.

We don’t force things in how they’re crafted and fabricated.” Cable guardrails add a light, transparent effect to the space. Opposite: “The floor plan allows for great sight lines across the rooms,” notes the wife, who chose certain furnishings “for viewing from both short- and long-range perspectives.” In the casita, an in-line kitchenette along a steel-clad wall separates the two bedrooms, which accommodate guests and family. ill Dambrova paints the unseen. His imaginative pieces, many done on large-scale canvases, explore life’s intangible aspects in an instinctive, fantastical way. “My mind always goes to biology and internal worlds,” explains the artist. “I think about interactions within my body or with another person. I like to visualize things like pheromones.” It’s an exploration that began when Dambrova first heard about massage therapy releasing toxins from the body. “I thought, ‘Is that real? What does it look like?’ ” Exploring such realms has been his pursuit ever since. After a stint in Los Angeles, the Arizona State University graduate returned to his native Phoenix. “The local art scene is small but there’s a funky vibe that I thrive on,” Dambrova notes. Inside his studio at Bragg’s Pie Factory, a converted historic bakery on Grand Avenue, the artist says he “activates the space” with incense and internet radio—the voice of Henry Rollins on L.A.’s KCRW or Iggy Pop on the BBC make the studio feel untethered to place, a liberating feeling for the self-described global citizen. Dambrova often begins works with a wash of house paint (“I like its immediacy and durability,” he says), letting drips create shapes he then defines with charcoal, oils, spray paint or acrylics for texture. “These aren’t paintings of the body, but paintings of what might be happening in and around the body,” he notes, explaining that he sees his work as an exploration of health and healing. By proposing what the incorporeal looks like, Dambrova hopes observers will contemplate their own experiences as living beings. There’s plenty of opportunity for viewers to do just that. This summer sees not only the debut of From the Earth to the Sky, his 6,000-square-foot terrazzo floor at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, but also his inclusion in “Art in Medicine” at Bentley Gallery. A solo show at Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum opens next spring. “In Arizona, there’s no definition of what art can be,” notes Dambrova. “There’s freedom in that.” And as such, he finds inspiration everywhere, from a Blue Origin rocket launch and Puff: Wonders of the Reef on Netflix, to the works of artists Katherine Bernhardt and Charline von Heyl. “They’re allowing themselves to paint what’s interesting to them,” he says. “Whatever I’m reading or thinking about at the moment is what’s exciting to me, and that energy has to make a painting better.”

“I let the paintings unfold as I make them,” says artist Bill Dambrova. His large-scale, often whimsical pieces such as Jive Mind_rev (below), Bound to Form and Tethered to a Flock (bottom, left), The First Visitation is Free (bottom, right) and Space Totem (opposite), examine unseen happenings in and around the human body.

Overlooking mountain views, a family home embraces the drama of the outdoors.

ome views demand your undivided attention, like the ones surrounding this family abode in Paradise Valley. On clear Arizona mornings, the homeowners awake to vistas of Camelback Mountain’s copper ridges cutting across the sky— a precious sight for these California transplants who fell in love with the state’s landscape. Flanked by such natural beauty, the couple wanted the scenery to take center stage in their home by creating more pared-down, restrained spaces. “It’s such an attractive setting, so we kept it very simple,” says designer Dana Lyon. “We opened up the rooms and added more light.” Achieving this sense of openness required dissolving some of the residence’s original Santa Barbara-inspired structure in favor of sharp, crisp interiors with no ornate distractions. Lyon collaborated with architect Joanna McBride and builder John Gurley to incorporate leaner finishes that would emphasize the dwelling’s viewpoints. This approach was informed by the wife in particular, who, as a home stylist, fully appreciates the idea that less is more. “She likes clean, simple lines,” notes McBride. “So we wanted to update the interiors with a more contemporary look.” Though the warm terra-cotta tile roof remains, window and door openings were widened and filled with new sleek black frames that maximize views. McBride also unbuttoned the main gathering areas by expanding the kitchen’s footprint and removing a gallery hallway to broaden the living room. That central living area now pivots toward the outside thanks to new French doors and the addition of a patio, generously covered to “mitigate all that sunlight coming into the house,” notes McBride. The softer light pouring through the open layout creates “this transition to a beautiful view of the pool and Camelback Mountain,” the architect adds. More intimate spaces also filter outwards, like the couple’s bedroom, reformatted to lead to a private lounge area. Now throughout the home, “you get to see outside from all different vantages,” says Lyon of the new configuration. Landscape designer Jeremy McVicars complemented the existing olive trees with layered plantings. Iceberg roses alongside

dwarf ollie and myrtle compose a romantic, yet simple palette of white flora and verdant foliage. Peeking in from every window, the lush greenery stands out against Lyon’s precisely tailored interiors. With the exception of the reclaimed oak flooring, each room maintains restrained hues oscillating in “variations between black and white,” notes the designer, who loves “the drama of some dark spaces mixed in with light rooms.” To that effect, she cloaked entire spaces in a single color, melding the boundaries between the walls and ceilings to convey a cathedrallike atmosphere. Lighting in contrasting hues helps punctuate the elevated look, like the black minimalist hoop pendants in the living and dining areas and the study’s antler chandelier, its organic forms made more pronounced against the dark ceilings. Any additional details remained minimalist and monochromatic: see the crisp white kitchen cabinetry with quartz countertops, and the cubist black marble fireplaces in the living room and study. This sensibility carried through to Lyon’s approach when curating new furnishings, which echoed “a desert modern idea, with clean, organic lines.” For the gathering areas—both indoors and out—she favored oversized seating with deep-set armchairs and generous nine-and-a-half-footlong sofas made for curling up together. “They’re very family-oriented,” says Lyon of the couple. “These spaces are really made for comfort.” With that in mind, the designer also utilized durable indoor-outdoor fabrics throughout the home. The textiles themselves range in “beautiful shades of off-white and gray, with some richer materials on the pillows to give it more texture,” she adds. Yet the restrained palette still makes room for some light-catching sparkle, taking advantage of the luminous spaces. “There’s a little piece of jewelry in many of the rooms, whether it be the faucet, the lighting or the wallpaper,” notes Lyon. Reflective details glimmer throughout, from antiqued twin mirrors in the main bedroom to a silver-leafed painting commissioned for the entry. Now, the couple never feels disconnected from the views that have come to feel like home. Everything has “great light and use of the environment,” says Lyon. No matter where you look, she adds, “you get a strong sense of being outdoors, even when you’re inside.”

An old olive tree’s feathery canopy hangs over the entryway of a Paradise Valley home, reimagined by designer Dana Lyon to fully embrace the outdoors. The widened entrance features a new door by Sierra Pacific Windows, which opens to reveal a silvered painting by artist Palmer Saylor III.

Contrasting against the dramatic black marble fireplace, the living room features furnishings in layers of subtle monochromatic hues, like the custom sofas upholstered in a Perennials fabric, accented with throw pillows covered in a Nobilis textile. The custom coffee table is by Peter Thomas Designs.

On the left wall, a geometric painting by David Dauncey adds visual movement.

Lyon cultivated a calm, soothing oasis for the couple’s bedroom with layers of lush fabrics and light-catching accents. A

t times, the search for a new home can feel hopeless. Such was the case for a bachelor in desire of a modern dwelling. He had toured over 30 properties, but nothing fit his vision. Suddenly though, the stars aligned, and he discovered the work of builder Ben Hawkins and architect Lance Enyart. Hawkins and Enyart had recently drawn up plans for a new residence. The structure was still in the framing stages when the client drove by the property in Phoenix. Seeing that no one was there, he hopped the fence to give himself a personal tour and, suspecting that this just might be the right house for him, reached out to Hawkins. When the client saw the contemporary lines of the plans, as well as the seamless indooroutdoor blend, he knew he’d finally found the perfect home. As it was still in the early stages, the team was able to customize the build to fully suit his tastes. Having already worked on one project together, Enyart and Hawkins were aligned when it came to the overall aesthetic for this residence. “We definitely subscribe to more modernist design principles,” Enyart says. To this end, they chose materials atypical of Arizona architecture, cladding much of the exterior with cedar charred in the traditional Japanese technique of shou sugi ban. “You don’t really see it very often here,” Hawkins explains. “But it helped provide contemporary elements and really soften the steel framing and elastomeric-coated stucco accents we used. It gave it quite a bit of organic warmth.” Also important, notes Enyart, was creating a feeling of continuity as the design moved inward. “We wanted to connect the exterior and interior environment for a cohesive statement,” the architect says. The ceilings and several interior walls use the same cedar but stained in a rich hue rather than charred. In the living room, the vertical lines of those cedar planks emphasize the soaring double-height ceiling and complement a panel of hot-rolled steel extending upward from the fireplace. Wanting to steer clear of trendy light

grays, whites and blacks in the adjoining kitchen, Hawkins mimicked the living room’s palette with brown cabinetry and dark gray countertops. “The idea was to bring the outside in and make it all one, in harmony,” the builder adds. For the decor and furnishings, the owner turned to designer Kristen Hancock, who took her cues from the architecture. “We kept the materials copacetic with the home’s aesthetic and the hardscape materials, so that it flowed naturally with the architectural elements,” she says. That meant using furnishings with light wood finishes to match the walls, varying tones and incorporating textures such as leather to create more visual interest in the relatively minimalist rooms. The owner’s passion for entertaining led the team to create easy yet sophisticated gathering spaces. While there is no formal dining room, a large table and a multitude of counter seating form an area for more casual meals. The large sectional encourages visitors to pile on and kick up their feet while still presenting a tailored look with its biscuit tufting. Hancock and her colleague Maddie Cullen also incorporated geometric prints and sculptural objects inspired by the owner’s collection of African pottery. “He really appreciates travel and we wanted to keep the space interesting to make sure that it spoke to him, but also flowed with the rest of the interior finishes as far as materials go,” Hancock says. “The rug in the family room has subtle abstract shapes that mimic the forms of some of the pottery he showed us.” Geometric patterns appear again in the wallpaper adorning the guest room, but in the homeowner’s bedroom, the designers kept things as serene as possible. “He wanted a space that he could retreat to and have it cohesive with his adjoining patio,” Hancock explains. “It flowed nicely because he built a steam unit outside that he uses as his space to wake up, work out, relax and get into his groove.” That sense of relaxation is one that the team worked to weave across all spaces of the abode, both indoors and out. Says the designer, “We just wanted to keep a tranquil feeling throughout.”

To harmonize with the modernist architecture and visually soften the steel elements, builder Ben Hawkins used the Japanese technique of sho sugi ban to create the charred cedar siding. Architect Lance Enyart designed the windows to continue the geometry of the home’s elongated form.

Above: Hawkins and Enyart designed the dwelling’s interior architecture to mirror its exterior. Prime Quality Floorings installed oak floors from Metro West Wholesale throughout the residence, while the stair railing by NP Fabrication references black metal accents on the outside massing. Opposite: The key design concept of the living room was to take advantage of the double-height volume while still maintaining a cozy and inviting feel. Designer Kristen Hancock placed a custom Rene Cazares sectional at its heart along with Mercana armchairs, a Noir coffee table and a Feizy rug.

How does your local design culture influence your work? Because Arizona is a singularly gorgeous environment to design for, I like to use local materials, such as copper, stone and darker color palettes that honor each home’s site. The high desert is also unique for its harsh sunlight, so the homes I design there require deep overhangs to protect the windows and help keep the interiors cool.
