Lure of the Lake

Personal touches, unexpected accessories and stunning views make for a jaw-dropping downtown penthouse.

Stylish empty nesters tap a design team to create a home that, with its neutral palette, allows the art and furnishings to shine.

Inspired by her grandmother and her past as an athlete, Jacqueline Surdell uses nautical rope to reinterpret landscape paintings.

A fresh and modern family home joins the ranks of the historic mansions on Geneva Lake.

TIME TO GET OUTSIDE EASE OF LIVING As outdoor living environments continue to rival those indoors, designers are on the lookout for dependable, genuine and innovative furnishings. Enter, Lloyd Flanders, the heirloom-quality outdoor furniture manufacturer on a mission to enhance homeowners’ lives. With impeccable workmanship, timeless style and unmatched comfort, Lloyd Flanders’ furniture achieves this goal, seamlessly. Made from materials that look as good as they last, each collection is handcrafted from the company’s Lloyd Loom® wicker fabric, woven vinyl or teak—and never burrs, cracks or peels.

HIGH ON STYLE ®

800.526.9894 LLOYDFLANDERS.COM LLOYD_FLANDERS

Lloyd Flanders never loses sight of its centuries-old heritage, constantly moving the needle forward to meet the wants and needs of today’s homeowner. “We’ve seen a growing increase in the use of color over the past few years,” says president and CEO Dudley Flanders. “While neutrals are still in high demand, we’re seeing a significant growth in our brighter colored finishes: Denim Blue, Sea Glass and Woodland Green.” Another trend, notes Warren Juliano, senior vice president of sales and marketing, is the “new traditional” design style. “Consumers are mixing and matching classic pieces with bolder, more modern items to create a comfortable, custom look,” he says. A perfect fit for the Lloyd Flanders family.

A D V E R T I S E M E N T

IN TODAY’S WORLD, GOOD DESIGN IS THAT WHICH IS TIMELESS, ATTRACTIVE AND LIVABLE.

HERITAGE MEETS HOME Lloyd Loom® furniture is still made in the same facility where this special process was first developed in 1917. As an alternative to the then-popular method of wrapping cane around a frame, Marshall Burns Lloyd created a process where cellulose strands were woven into a wicker fabric. Each handcrafted piece of Lloyd Loom furniture made today uses the same process as more than 100 years ago.

Drawn to Design

As we emerge from the pandemic, we’ve all felt the need to be more inspired, by both big ideas and small pleasures. That led me to create a sketchbook filled with some observations on home and living. I’m sharing a page here that’s influenced by stories from this issue. I hope that you, too, will find your creative spark.

ON VIEW

THE SHOWS MUST GO ON While virtual exhibitions and events gave visitors near and far their art fix, we’re delighted that in-person experiences are back at these three Chicago museums. Here’s what to look forward to throughout spring and summer. The Art Institute of Chicago promises to be a big draw this summer when it debuts “The Obama Portraits.” On loan from the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, Kehinde Wiley’s painting of President Barack Obama and Amy Sherald’s portrait of First Lady Michelle Obama will be on view June 18-August 15. artic.edu Reopened in March, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago welcomed Chicago-born artist Christina Quarles’ largest exhibition to date (through September 5). Her ambiguous paintings depicting limbs and torsos will make you think differently about bodies and the way they interact with the world around them. mcachicago.org Chicago History Museum also reopened in March, drawing visitors with “Millions of Moments: The Chicago Sun-Times Photo Collection,” an exhibition of 150 photographs from the iconic newspaper spanning the 1940s to early 2000s. Also on display through July 4 is a moving gallery honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. chicagohistory.org

WILLIS TOWER

If you haven’t been to Willis Tower in a few years, this iconic piece of the Chicago skyline looks very different. The 110-story building has been undergoing a $500 million-plus redevelopment since 2018, with changes including the addition of Catalog (a dining, entertainment and community area) as well as meeting and event space, restaurants (including Tortazo by Rick Bayless), an outdoor terrace and garden, and a soaring skylight. The most recent addition? Atmospheric Wave Wall by Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson (right), a public art installation that captures shifting sunlight on the street level of the tower along Jackson Boulevard. “The design creates a new relationship between building and streetscape, drives community and connection, and engages visitors in an experience truly unique to Chicago,” says Todd Heiser, managing director at Gensler Chicago, the architect behind the transformation. willistower.com

TAKING (HOME) OFFICE

Growing up as the daughter of home renovators on Chicago’s South Side, Kira Obermeier developed a special appreciation for old homes. In 2018 she founded Kira David Design with a focus on bringing a fresh approach to classical design, particularly with historic properties. To no surprise, over the past year she’s seen a heightened demand for home offices. Whatever space you have to work with, she advises: “Hang some favorite art, add a mirror to bounce light around, and treat it like the luxurious office you’d like to spend your time in,” Obermeier says. And don’t overlook lighting; it creates warmth and ambience.

SOUTH LOOP LOFT “Beth Berke curates such an incredible lighting and accessory collection. I love finding a unique table or task lamp to make the office feel personal.” thesouthlooploft.com

CANARY LANE “My first stop for vintage rugs. Meredith MacDougall will bring you any rug to try out in a client’s home. For an office, look for a rug with low pile, especially if you have wheels on your desk chair, and aim for a size that comfortably fits underneath your entire desk and chair.” canarylanedesigns.com

MEGMADE “This is my go-to for desks. They’ll refinish vintage pieces according to our direction, from color to finish to hardware (for example, piano-gloss paint for a modern touch). I prioritize function by retrofitting file drawers or adding dividers. I’ve even added outlets for charging stations.” megmade.com

DESIGN

A new development in Chicago’s Lakeshore East incorporates the concept of biophilia, or the human desire to connect with nature, through a verdant indoor amenity. The Conservatory, a shared space connecting the 350-unit condo tower Cirrus and the 503-unit apartment building Cascade, is filled with flora and fauna and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Cascade Park. Abundant natural light, lush plants (think fiddle leaf figs and bamboo), wood-block flooring and polished stone allow residents to enjoy natural surroundings no matter the weather. “Over the past year, we have been reminded of the importance of being connected to the outdoors,” says Linda Kozloski, creative design director with Lendlease, a developer on the project. “This renewed interest in the natural world, including its role in supporting our physical and mental well-being, has made biophilic design a guiding principle in new residential communities.” cirruscondos.com

OPEN HOUSE ARHAUS

Globally inspired heirloom-quality furniture brand Arhaus has relocated to Oak Brook Center, the upscale shopping destination in the western Chicago suburbs. The new two-floor, 18,000-square-foot store, which opened in February, offers a shoppable showroom of indoor and outdoor furniture and decor as well as in-person and virtual design services. In celebration of the new store, Arhaus partnered with DIOP, an African-inspired label whose new line of pillows debuted at this location. arhaus.com meet the maker photos: cameron blaylock. blueprint photo: courtesy cirrus + cascade. open house photo: courtesy arhaus.

Going to cocktail bars is a hobby for Craighton Berman— but not for the drinks. “I love to go and watch the technique,” says Berman, an industrial designer who creates products to elevate the home cocktail experience. For example: decanters. Far from just a functional object, they transform liquor from a packaged good into home decor, says Berman. That’s why he launched the Manual Cocktail Collection, a line of handmade frosted glassware. The decanter’s corked lid is made to perfectly measure a shot, while the matching mixing glass is a simple way to stir up your favorite cocktail at home. “We live in an age where we can order anything and have it brought to us,” says Berman, “but taking the time to learn and practice making a cocktail yourself demystifies a process, teaches you a skill and imbues pride in the act of creation.” Not just for liquor, the decanter can also hold water or wine—in any case, providing a chic way to stay hydrated. manual.is

THESE DUOS ARE PARTNERS IN LIFE … AND IN DESIGN. AS TOLD TO MARY JO BOWLING

Balancing Act

Ben and Susan Work Homework, San Francisco

SW: At first, we were both skeptical about working together. Ben had a new architecture career, but in my interior design practice, I had a desperate need I knew he could fill. For some time he toggled between two jobs. After a while, we asked ourselves: “Are we really going to do this—be married and work together?” We are so aligned in terms of vision, narrative and goals for the client, that in the end it was effortless. BW: We respond to our clients’ needs and desires, but we are known for a soft minimalism—or, in some ways, a feminine brutalism. SW: I’d be the “feminine” in that phrase. There’s a tension that we think makes projects so exciting—it’s when opposing forces meet. Generally, Ben is more of a minimalist and prefers less adornment. Though I appreciate that, as a designer I like to get in and mess things up a bit. In the end, we value and find meaning in each other’s perspective, and it balances things out.

BW: At work, we don’t have disagreements; it’s more like a merging of ideas. We might have two competing thoughts, but by hashing it out, they eventually merge into one. It’s more of a push and pull than a conflict, and it leads to the best ideas for sure. The end product is so much richer, and more filled with surprise and unexpected elements. SW: We both like to be strategic about lighting, and we always agree on unconventionally shaped rugs, streaky dramatic shadows, sculptural wall art and travertine. BW: She usually wants to put a banquette in every room, and because it’s an architectural intervention in interior design, I agree.

Kismet Connection Hunter Fleetwood and Mariapaz Fernandez

Fleetwood Fernandez, Los Angeles

HF: We met in a park in Washington, D.C. She had a Dalmatian, and I love dogs, so I said hello. In truth, I was smitten. A year later, she walked into the architecture office where I was working as a new employee. I was dumbfounded and remembered her after all that time MF: I really didn’t remember him! But we became fast friends. We had a lot in common from the get-go, especially both being architects, and we ended up dating, then marrying and then moving to Los Angeles.

LUXESOURCE.COM

HF: We both have a fascination with Los Angeles architecture and its spirit of experimentation and indoor-outdoor living. MF: I was born on the island of Mallorca, and the Spanish approach to architecture resonates here—it’s a natural, Mediterranean feeling.

HF: We seek simplicity. We hew to stylistically simple solutions that have informal derivations and a quiet aesthetic signature. MF: We begin a project by looking at a client’s rituals. We are more interested in what they do every day, and what they appreciate about their daily moments.

HF: Our process is collaborative. We come up with an idea together and pursue it. Married friends ask us how we do it without arguing, and I tell them that when we’re working we never disagree. MF: We have skills that complement each other. Hunter is good at committing to a concept or idea, and never steering away from it. I am good at spatial interactions and interventions.

HF: At home, Mariapaz doesn’t want anything in the house that is not beautiful. So, the simplest elements can become a project. We had a plastic Brita pitcher, and we wanted something more attractive, so it became a search for the most beautiful glass pitcher in the world. MF: It is hard not to work 24/7. We try to have non-work time, but work does permeate everything we do. To us, it is all one life.

Common Ground

Heide Hendricks and Rafe Churchill Hendricks Churchill, Connecticut

HH: We are both from the same town, Woodbury, Connecticut. We met at my parents’ house—my family was building a rock wall, and Rafe heard about it and showed up one day. We knew of each other’s families, but we went to different high schools, and we never met before that day. We both moved to New York City a year later and started dating, and we’ve now been married for 25 years.

LUXESOURCE.COM

HH: When it comes to style, I’d say he’s more adventurous, and bolder with colors. I’m bold when putting things together; like hanging a Renaissance painting next to a modern Abstract Expressionist painting. RC: I’d say we are on the same page. After 25 years, we can walk into an antique shop, and she will be able to pick out exactly the things I like.

photo: lesley unruh.

RC: In college, I majored in sculpture and architecture. But my whole family was in construction, so I grew up in construction— I came to design work as a tradesperson. In New York, I started working on renovations of galleries and loft apartments. HH: I was working in publicity for art museums. But Rafe and I were buying homes, fixing them up and selling them on the side—that’s how we first started working together. It was my hobby before it became my full-time job. RC: In 2003, we got our first opportunity to work together on a project for someone else. It was what we called the “New Farmhouse” in Sharon, Connecticut. Heide joined me officially halfway through that project as an interior designer. A lot of firms offer just architecture or just interior design—and working with another firm can be a careful dance, making sure you don’t step on any toes and that you are speaking the same language. We have the advantage of speaking the same language.

ago—one stone on top of the other. We’re lucky as design professionals, not just because it’s an active market, but because it’s an exciting time of innovation in material development and production.” Energizing her outlook of late, Schicketanz has partnered with several like-minded prefab home companies on executing her designs. As opposed to trucking in materials and labor, the approach cuts time, energy and a staggering amount of construction waste. “Producing highly customized homes offsite,” she says, “is really the future.”

A home in Tennessee by Bobby McAlpine and Greg Tankersley boasts a connecting barn that doubles as a play area for grandchildren and an easily convertible party space.

In a sea of change, authenticity’s stronghold sets a reassuring undertone. Extended time at home “has taught us what serves us as a friend,” says McAlpine. “Decades ago, we were building houses that we learned to want whereas now, people are asking what the truth is about their life.” Adds Tankersley, “Clients are designing forever homes. I don’t think you can build more green than that.”

SPEAKING A R C H I T E C T U R A L LY RADAR

A strange thing happened this past year: Nobody visited. Stripped of show and distilled to domesticity, slowly, home began to look a bit different. If you ask architecture partners Bobby McAlpine and Greg Tankersley, it began to look like a country house. “I’ve found that people transfer more of their hearts to their second residence,” explains McAlpine. “A primary home asks, ‘How do I present myself to the world?’ Whereas the second home is all-eyes-off. It’s the truth.” Arguing the shift, the architects cite growing requests for insular amenities like spirited-away offices, accessory dwellings devoted to health and hobby, and outdoor rooms. In the same thread, they’ve observed a return to country home traditions of yesteryear in a departure from open-concept floor plans to “destination kitchens” and defined dining rooms, and in a fresh emphasis on workhorses like mud rooms and cloak rooms. For Tankersley, “beautiful, casual spaces that speak of humility” crystallize the mood switch. “I don’t think anybody finds ego attractive anymore,” he adds. With e-design now de facto, it’s an interesting time for realizing these shifting ideals of luxury. Architect Peter Pennoyer offers a robust menu of in-house services, from virtual renderings that allow, say, finish sampling under different lighting exposures, to 3D-printed resin models that are accurate down to exterior brick count. The final tier? Virtual reality, a custom, hyper-realistic model in the cloud that clients access via headset, allowing them to “visit” and further specify their home before ground breaks. The technology has proved valuable on the back end, too. “During Covid, we’ve had meetings between our Manhattan office and our engineers in Connecticut where we’re all ‘together’ in a house in Florida, slapping Post-it notes on a virtual wall,” he laughs. “I think it challenges us to do things that are even more special for each project.” Technology is also fighting climate change. In California, architect Mary Ann Schicketanz has been championing sustainability for decades. Net-zero principles are as integral to her practice as permits, yet looking forward, she says, will require a more radical stance. “We build the same way we did 5,000 years

Manhattan architecture-engineering firm edg’s custom interior wall panels and coverings—the first to be designed entirely by Artificial Intelligence—utilize a client’s design preferences and complex technology to offer endless options of visually compelling surfaces.

“I don’t think this is a flash in the pan,” says Josephson. “The more people see that this is achievable, the more people are going to want it and pursue it.” Creating surfaces with an interesting and compelling presence is exactly what Manhattan architecture-engineering firm edg is doing with its new customizable interior wall applications. While leveraged through 3D printing and AI technology, the firm offers “organic forms” consumers wouldn’t traditionally find in a contemporary box-like apartment building. “Living in a very ornamental city,” says the firm’s founder, John J. Meyer, “there is a natural desire to be creative when construction is extremely limited to brick and concrete.” Using hundreds of thousands of permutations from one algorithm to create these patterns, the options are limitless when it comes to creating wavelike, fluted or densely repeating patterns. This reinvigorated biomimicry reminds us that as humans we crave a connection to nature, and as interest in sustainability grows, the future will always be organic. “No one can deny in these designs that there’s dynamism and movement,” says Josephson. “The things we celebrate most, even in classical art, are decidedly organic.”

VIGNETTE: COURTESY EDG. PRODUCTS: COURTESY RESPECTIVE COMPANIES.

It’s no coincidence that fluted, linear designs are making a major comeback. Often visible on surfaces and architectural details—think interior walls, exterior siding, stairwells and furnishings with wood grains—architects and designers say the undulating design is a nod to nature, offering a soothing, pleasing effect that’s right for the times. “Many believe the art you hang on the wall is what gives a home character,” says architect Kevin Alter of Alterstudio Architects. “However, I believe architecture allows walls to have their own charisma and not just as a kind of neutral surface, but actually something that has presence. I think that is powerful.” The oscillating details create a sense of coziness—akin to hygge— and standout visual appeal, especially when applied to wood materials, Alter explains. Similarly, Jonathan Friedman of Torontobased architecture studio Partisans says these striking applications allude to the modernism movement. “It’s a mashup—a lot of different eras are resurfacing right now,” he says. “By looking back and resynthesizing them, we can actually reinvigorate the architecture of today.” The firm’s Fold House project in southern Ontario, which showcases an undulating pool house structure enveloped into the side of a hill, puts the modern organic concept front and center. Cofounder Alex Josephson says that as these sculptural forms become more accessible, they grow more popular in the residential world.

Inspired by midcentury modernism, the Venice Media Console from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams (top) features a mahogany veneer with a fluted shape in a soft white finish. Both Geotzzo Ribbon by Artistic Tile (center, left) and the Terrazzo Renata Fluted Collection by Ann Sacks (center, right) offer fluidity and old-world charm. The Maelstrom side tables by Caleb Woodard Furniture (below), which double as stools, combine curvaceous form and function.

Richard Kennedy Architects looked to the surrounding Arizona landscape to inform the design of the Scottsdale Public Library’s Arabian branch, resulting in a LEED-certified structure that appears as if it was excavated from the Earth. Terra-cotta walls, a stone roof and intersections of steel and glass create the feeling of being immersed in a canyon. Inside the central courtyard, light pours into the building’s angled windows, casting a bronze glow and dispersing dramatic shadows throughout. scottsdalelibrary.org

One of the surviving relics of decadent early20th-century New York is linked to none other than Gilded Age banker J.P. Morgan. An avid collector, Morgan commissioned a personal library by architect Charles F. McKim in 1906, which later became public in 1924. Three levels of books soar upward of 30 feet to a ceiling of ornate lunettes and spandrels depicting signs of the zodiac and famous contributors to the arts and sciences, cementing itself as an impressive example of American Renaissance style. themorgan.org

Libraries have long been a communal gathering place and beacons of optimism, and the colorful façade of the Chicago Public Library’s Independence branch is both literally and figuratively brightening the neighborhood. In a brilliant move of urban planning, atop the two-story, 16,000-square-foot library proudly sits four floors of affordable and senior housing apartments. A challenge in and of itself, John Ronan Architects succeeded in ensuring that the mixed-use building accommodates—and inspires—residents and visitors alike. chipublib.org

GOOD SPIRITS BUNSA STUDIO

Designer Jennifer Bunsa aims for each project to be distinct. “I like for the personality of my clients to shine through—it should really be all about them,” she explains. When the time came to renovate a residence in Connecticut for homeowners in the food and wine industry, devoting a separate area in the house to a beautiful bar was agreed upon from the outset. jenniferbunsa.com Where is the bar located in the house? The renovated room you see here is actually a connector between two historic structures that date back to 1790. It’s really the first thing you see when you walk in the front door. I wanted the shiplap to echo the exterior of the old farmhouse while the reclaimed beams nod to original wooden posts unearthed during building. How is this spot used? Because of the homeowners’ line of work, we wanted to craft a special space for pouring beautiful wine and stirring cocktails—this is important to them. The wife also makes coffee here each morning, sits down and has a moment to herself after the children go to school. I like to think this nook provides a calming influence at any time of the day. Talk to us about the materials. The idea was to create contrast within the room but to keep it elevated with warmer tones and textures like the charred pine cabinetry, striking marble surfaces and unlacquered brass hardware, which is used throughout the home. I worked closely with Amuneal on the design and they completely understood the vision! In Weston, Connecticut, Jennifer Bunsa incorporated a Vola faucet, Miele coffee maker and Sub-Zero wine refrigerator into the bar space she designed with Amuneal, which features charred pine cabinetry and brass detailing. Benjamin Moore’s Simply White decorates the walls; the leather chairs are by Bassam Fellows.

SHELF LIFE

photo: nicole franzen.

Master fabricators Amuneal do it all—from creating doors and stairways to designing sleek kitchens and closets—but the brand’s sophisticated bar configurations are truly top of the line. CEO Adam Kamens discusses what goes into creating these polished vignettes. amuneal.com Make the bar specific to the space. It’s common to see these areas against a wall but Jennifer Bunsa took a look at every angle in her project and created a beautiful combination with mounted, see-through shelving that incorporates the rest of the home. Consider the finishes. Texture is very important and can actually create depth and warmth within a space. Shou sugi ban was used here, and we actually take the wood and char it, creating a very tactile effect. Fabricate a focal point. Concealed bars used to be very popular but now people are really embracing these elegant schemes and making them an anchor of the room. Mix up shelving. Amuneal offers open and closed storage, as shown here. Sometimes you want to hide the mess. Doors can create a nice weight, while open shelving adds airiness.

Working with architect Garrett P. Nelson, designer Jolee Fennebresque chose a Brizo faucet, Niermann Weeks chandelier and RH pendants for this bar room in Charlotte, North Carolina. A custom paint color from Eastway Paints and art by Sarah Helser from Hidell Brooks Gallery completes the look.

DARK MODE LUXESOURCE.COM

Jolee Fennebresque of Fennebresque Interiors knew that a moody statement bar was on her client’s must-have list for her new-build home in Charlotte, North Carolina. But it wasn’t until Fennebresque saw the Tropical Storm Quartzite at the stone yard that the scheme started to take shape: the honey tones of the countertops

complement a custom brown-black paint color, setting the ideal backdrop for the art adorning the walls. To add warmth, she opted for brass detailing unifying the hardware, lighting, sink and faucet. The end result is a master class in balancing elements to achieve a glam but livable space. fennebresqueinteriors.com

Warm Embrace THE SEASON’S NUANCED, REASSURING PALETTES UNDERSCORE THE INNATE COMFORT OF COLOR.

Color is personal and visceral, the perfect hue as cosseting as a cashmere wrap. Just ask designer Danielle Balanis, who swathed the walls of her office in an uplifting sage green and the ceilings in a sunny paisley wallpaper. Formerly the shadowy basement of her Mountain Brook, Alabama residence, Balanis made it her mission to imbue the newly crafted work-from-home space with optimism and inspiration, relying on garden-fresh tones and her collections of cherished artworks and antiques. “The colors are healing,” she says. “It’s my cocoon of creativity. I come down here, get lost and find my groove.”

WR I T T E N AN D PR O DUC E D BY G R ACE BE ULEY HUNT

“Mustard is my number one, go-to color,” effuses designer Danielle Balanis. As testament, buffalo check portieres, Schumacher’s Katara paisley wallpaper on the ceiling and gimp fabric trimming the millwork bring a cheerful disposition to her otherwise deep green office space. daniellebalanis.com

Raised between Istanbul and Washington, D.C., interior designer Sara Bengur has a unique perspective on color associations. Luxe caught up with Bengur in the vibrant family room of a Manhattan client to hear her hot take on hue. sarabengur.com Where does a palette begin? I start by going to my clients’ homes with a giant bag full of fabrics, paint samples and carpets. I tell them to choose textures and colors they like— no stress, no ‘where would it go?’—just pure instinct. The pile they create becomes my starting point. Tell us about this room. The inspiration was the Proportio Exhibit at Palazzo Fortuny at the Venice Biennale, which my clients had seen and loved. In Venice, you notice lots of layers and rich colors. The room faces east onto a courtyard, so I felt using warmer tones of red and orange would ground the space. Advice for the color-shy? There’s a big difference between vegetable and commercial dyes. One thing I’ve found is that if you stick with natural vegetable dyes, and combine similar tones, you don’t get that unnecessary stimulation.

REPORT THE LIVING

GLOBAL FLAIR

What shades bring you comfort? Growing up in Turkey and vacationing in the Mediterranean, it was layers of ochre, terra-cotta and turquoise—whereas blue and green are the calming colors of the west. I find it fascinating that different cultures have different views on what nurtures. Where are you drawing inspiration lately? Anywhere! It could be an artwork or a great dress. The other night, I was watching the movie Luxor, and spied this Egyptian ferry painted in the most beautiful patterns of blue, red and peach. I had to pause and snap a picture. I’ll probably end up incorporating it somewhere.

UNCOMMON THREADS

Naturalistic, multifaceted color compositions distinguish the rug collections developed by Christopher Farr in collaboration with British designer Gregory Parkinson. This year, ‘Intertwine,’ a new range defined by space-dyed yarns yielding dimensional color effects, joins the inaugural collection, ‘Woven,’ sampled here in Color Weave Kilim in Mauve Straw and Beach Weave in Ocean Jade. Each rug is made-to-order in Mirzapur, India, with the ability to customize across hue, construction, size and style. christopherfarr.com

OFF-WHITE

“I almost always use this particular white on the ceilings, which has a bit of gray to it.” Strong White Paint / farrow-ball.com

PERFECT COCKTAIL “People think of our work as colorful, but if you actually look it’s quite neutral and restrained in a way,” insists designer Beata Heuman. Take for instance this London snug, where orange tigers prance across the walls and a theatrically canopied azure sofa stares down a moss green rug. Somehow, the tone is serene. “Generally, I do neutral backdrops with flashes of color where you wouldn’t expect it,” explains Heuman, whose whimsical portfolio shines in her new book, Every Room Should Sing. “In this room, the traditional order would have been plain walls and pattern on the furniture, so we tried to invert that.”

Another trick: Using the same white paint across a home’s ceilings and woodwork, a move she deems “really important to tying things together.” Heuman credits her philosophy to a deep-seated passion for art, citing Vermeer’s color mastery in particular as aspiration. “Think of his paintings. They’re all dark and neutral, and then you’ll spot these flashes—a white collar, a red lip.” Similarly, “every room needs a pop of color,” she says. “Here, it’s the red beak of the bird on the pillow, and I have to say, that pillar box red is great. If a room doesn’t feel quite vibrant enough, adding a tiny splash of it can really lift things.” beataheuman.com

GRASS ROOTS DESIGNER BENNETT LEIFER SHARES THE QUARANTINE COLOR JOURNEY THAT MADE HIM LOVE HIS APARTMENT AGAIN. AS TO L D TO G R AC E BE ULE Y HUN T

My dad worked in finance, but he was very artistic. When I was a child, we’d spend weekends at the tiki bar in my grandparents’ basement painting and drawing. In college, I studied art history (as well as business), and I’ve always admired landscapes in particular. There’s this pensive, thoughtful quality to oil paintings that I love staring at—something about those rich, botanical greens. Which brings us to Covid. I had become a bit of a workaholic, rolling out of bed, crawling into sweatpants, going to the computer, and before I knew it, the day was done. I was looking for a hobby, and I thought, ‘Why not try oil painting?’ I did a ton of research, ordered my materials, and set out for the park near my apartment. I have to tell you, it was … truly embarrassing. There I was setting up the easel with an instruction manual, dabbing at my painter’s palette. At first there was this fear of judgment, but pushing through that fear to the other side was really wonderful. As the weather grew cold, I came inside and realized I needed a dedicated space for my hobby. Rekindling my love of botanical green, I began refreshing my apartment, starting in

the living room where I got rid of my enormous dining table (since I haven’t been entertaining at scale), adding a tea table for meals and artwork in its place. Then, I began pulling in threads of green scattered through my home. My favorite decorative screen—a gift from deGournay—used to sit in the foyer where I never saw it. Now, it anchors the space. Similarly, I had a beautiful Tai Ping carpet in my bedroom, where it’s wonderful, sweeping pattern of green and blue was hidden under a mattress. Now, I enjoy it every day. I added plants and reconceived my art collection. You know those moments when you just feel chic at home? The other night, I was FaceTiming with a friend, drinking from a green Baccarat glass, and I thought, ‘I feel chic!’ And I think it’s because I’m living in color. Green is amazing: It’s that perfect lagoon water, that perfect emerald jewel, that perfect eye color. There are these few tones of green that just make me smile. bennettleifer.com

210 DESIGN HOUSE DEFINING SUCCESS IN NEW WAYS 210 Design House is a unique space. The stand-alone building encompasses a 10,000-square-foot showroom of highly curated selections, including Snaidero cabinetry from Italy and USA-based Plain & Fancy Custom Cabinetry. But senior designer Alexander Adducci is quick to point out that 210’s product line is not just limited to cabinetry. “We also represent high-end furnishings, wardrobe and closet systems, as well as glass wall room partitions and doors,” he says. While its team has always enjoyed a retail presence working directly with homeowners and their designers, 210 Design House has also teamed with top developers in Chicago and across the country on some of the most prominent multi-housing projects. Though this past year has proven different, 210 Design House pivoted with ease. “We have adjusted our business practices to take into account varying levels of comfort and safety,” Adducci says. “And the size of our showroom naturally accommodates social distancing.” Beyond that, 210’s design team has taken to virtual calls, tours and design meetings to make the process of designing as normal as possible.

“ We are all valuing more time at home, with a renewed perspective on designing around what’s important: food, fun, family and friends.”

ALEXANDER ADDUCCI: AN IN-HOUSE PERSPECTIVE

What led you to your current profession? I have a passion for cooking and was looking to translate those skills into a new expression of creativity. I have been in the design industry for over 20 years—the last three working with Snaidero Chicago and Plain & Fancy Chicago at 210 Design House. How do you stay on top of trends and styles? Through print publications, but also online through sites focused on cities, neighborhoods, lifestyles and events happening within our communities.

How would you describe the personality of 210 Design House? Energized and open. Open to new design aesthetics, design ideas and how we work with clients. Speaking to your line of work, what constitutes ‘good design’? Although visual aesthetics always need to be considered, whatever meets the true needs of the client is good design in my opinion. If the client is happy, that’s what really matters. What is inspiring you now? Just life, really. While taking in everyday surroundings and experiences, it’s always exciting when you discover something unexpected that sparks new design ideas! The pandemic has certainly shed a new perspective on what is really important and how we engage with one another at home and in business.

EMILY MILLMAN DESIGN “My strong education, creative ideas, meticulous follow-through, fine art experience and hands-on approach set me apart.”

ON A PERSONAL NOTE Who you aspire to be like. In life, Brené Brown. I love how open, soulful and tapped into the human experience she is. In work, locally, there are many strong, creative and businesssavvy women I admire.

A

s a child working on her Thorne Room-inspired dollhouses, designer Emily Millman developed a love of all things miniature. “I am from Arizona and the other half of the collection of the Thorne Rooms (outside of the Art Institute here in Chicago) is at the Phoenix Art Museum, which I visited as a child,” she says. Since then, her love of design has taken over, and her focus as the owner and principal of her namesake firm, Emily Millman Design, is much bigger and broader in scope. “My area of focus is new home construction or major renovation along with full scope furnishings, accessories and

artwork,” she says. Calling her style “modern classic with a relaxed aesthetic”— think fresh, breezy and natural—she works in many different design languages, always bringing the client in as her go-to for aesthetic direction. Not surprisingly, scale plays a major part in her creative process, drawing in the plan and elevation to get it just right. Layering lighting is another of Millman’s signatures, combining ambient and architectural fixtures when and where she can. And form always follows function in every one of her designs, starting with how a space must work for the client and their lifestyle, and ending with a dream home, realized.

Items on your desk. A John Derian glass paperweight from Astier de Villatte in Paris, a ceramic pen holder my best friend gave me for my birthday, and my Pop-up Post-it note dispenser. If not a designer, you’d be a ... Psychologist or a creative writer, or maybe a food critic. Some quick favorites. I love Mexican food and all things spicy (the hotter the better!). My favorite vacation spot is anywhere on a white sand beach with a fun cocktail. And I love Kacey Musgraves’ music.

At A. Perry Homes, building dream homes comes easy. That’s due, in most part, to its passion for learning, understanding and using a family’s aspirations as inspiration for every project. Whether building new or renovating old, the A. Perry team begins with an open mind. When remodeling, existing elements come into play, as well as the future use of the space, its return on investment and the clients’ wish list. Speaking to the latter, CEO Tony Perry encourages homeowners to share ideas through imagery, which helps his team go to work … sketching, listening and sketching

Rather than sit back during the past year, architect Michael Viamontes leaned in, founding M Viamontes Architects with three projects on the docket: a gut renovation, a prewar apartment remodel and a new construction. By the end of 2020, MVA had over a dozen projects in five states. Such quick growth speaks to Michael’s 15-plus years of working on high-end residences and restaurants. His partner, Mindy Viamontes, joined the firm in January 2021 after 16 years of managing complex public projects. “We always dreamed of running a practice together,” says the duo, who met in architecture school. While married in life, they aren’t married to any one style, calling “versatility” their signature. “We work with the client and the project context to determine our direction,” they say. This adaptability carries over to their roles as architect, furniture selector, space planner and turnkey operator. Team players in all ways.

The desire to live off-the-grid (or almost off-the-grid) is quickly becoming the norm. MVA embraces this unconventional choice with sustainable building practices and novel approaches to design. “Geothermal is good, but its benefits are negligible compared to passive features like solar/wind orientation,” Michael says. “The goal is to block the sun in the summer and allow it in the winter. Super insulating and thermal mass are two other key ingredients that reduce thermal loads. Eco-minded clients are also asking for vegetable gardens, so they can grow as much of their own food as possible. Irrigation can be done by collecting and storing rainwater.”

MODERN COMFORTS

Interior Design: Donna Mondi, Donna Mondi Interior Design

“It greets you as you walk in, so you’re not just in the living room right away,” says designer Donna Mondi of the foyer. The space features a geometric walnut table by Anees Upholstery, a Konekt horsehair stool and a whimsical ostrich table from Global Views.

S

ometimes you just know what you want. For an empty-nester couple, that was a penthouse with floor-to-ceiling windows in a new 13-story boutique building just blocks from the Magnificent Mile. Engaged at the time, they were looking to trade their quiet Lincoln Park lifestyle for the bustling energy of downtown Chicago. This fourbedroom condominium provided plenty of room for their visiting children from their previous relationships and had all the luxury essentials, right down to a modern kitchen designed by Italian purveyor Ernestomeda. But something was missing. They wanted custom touches that reflected their personal tastes (his, rock and roll; hers, feminine). Their vision: a powder room with a major wow factor, a serene bedroom suite with a reeded wood panel that includes a ledge for artwork, and designated entertaining zones— including an in-home bar for both gatherings and intimate date nights. The wife, new to the Chicago area, realized she needed help bringing her design vision to life. After some intensive reconnaissance work, she selected designer Donna Mondi. “I did a deep dive and knew she was the one for us,” recounts the wife of discovering Mondi, who is known for her signature blend of classicism and edgy modernity—think a little bit of glam, a little bit of grit. “It was a gut thing. I was able to discuss my ideas with her and she was able to capture them.” For Mondi, the feeling was mutual. “They had great energy, and this is a home that really was built for entertaining,” she says. The expansive views and building architecture naturally steered key design decisions like lighting, furniture scale and the contrasting palette of neutrals with pops of rich color. “With this being a new high-rise, it just felt like it needed to be modern,” she says, “but we wanted it to be really comfortable. A view like this is a huge design element.” To that end, low-profile yet sumptuously textured furniture, such as clean-lined sofas with a bit of shimmer and curvy velvet-upholstered dining chairs, add that elegance while not distracting from the view.

Mondi also considered what viewers would see from the outside. That meant a methodical balance of artwork and accessories that included a vintage Italian plaster bust, a curvaceous column-like sculpture and a brushed-brass chandelier with strands of black draped leather. “There needed to be a cool fixture there so that from the outside people are like, ‘Look at that unit,’ ” says Mondi. The spirited couple, both avid art enthusiasts, sold their Lincoln Park residence fully furnished and arrived at the penthouse with nothing but personal belongings and two paintings by artist John La Huis (one was the first significant piece of artwork they acquired together; it now resides in the dining room). Aside from incorporating the paintings into the design, they had two nonnegotiable items: that aforementioned glamorous powder room and a stand-alone bar. “One of my favorite things is when you go to a hotel or restaurant bathroom and the design blows you away,” says the wife of the inspiration for the powder room. Using that as a jumping off point, Mondi layered it with a custom glass-andblackened steel partition, dramatic ebony-hued wallpaper and a Brutalist-style mirror, which, the wife remarks, “reminds me of the magic mirror in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” The bespoke bar with a fluted surround and marble bar top was inspired by one of Mondi’s previous design trips to Paris and the Girafe Restaurant there, which was designed by lauded architect Joseph Dirand. The cocktail area has quickly become another favorite spot in the home for quiet dinners for two and socially distanced cocktails with friends (the husband often acts as bartender serving up old-fashioneds, Vespers, Mezcal and—since it’s Chicago—shots of Malört). “We didn’t want it to be your basic basement bar,” says the wife. “We wanted it to be elegant and have a lot of character.” Now settled into their carefully tailored home that checks off each and every item on their wish list, the couple has affectionately named the penthouse The Skybox. “It’s full of surprises and delights,” says Mondi. “I wanted people to walk in and just be enchanted. You’re surprised at every turn. That’s the magic of what we did here.”

mpty-nesters have more fun, or at least Rich and Rebecca Cline do. After their five children went off to college, the stylish couple built a brand-new abode on a two-and-a-half-acre-property just steps from the golf course where Rich first played in 1971 when he was just a kid. “It’s one of my favorite places in the world,” he says. “Every day is different. The scenery along the course changes.” Although many people opt to downsize after their children leave the roost, Rich and Rebecca thought a little bigger, assembling architect Richard Olsen, builder P.J. Murphy and designer Amy Storm, to build an expansive dwelling that wraps around a terraced poolside patio with landscaping by Brian Casey. “We wanted the kids to come back and join us,” Rebecca explains, noting that, for liability reasons, they had never felt comfortable having a pool when their children were younger. Finally, they were giving their kids the pool they’d always dreamed about. Together, the team designed a modern farmhouse clad with white vertical board and batten siding accented by Wisconsin limestone, black metal windows and an aluminum standing seam metal roof. “To have that piece of land, with that kind of view onto a golf course, was pretty nice,” Olsen says. “It’s a very rural setting, so most of the spaces have exposures on the front and back.” That’s the case for the spacious great room, which boasts a soaring peaked ceiling accented with white-oak beams and high window dormers that drench the space with natural daylight. “It’s an uplifting element,” Olsen explains. Even when the sun sets and the temperature dips, the room’s vibe remains welcoming. Rich and Rebecca often build a crackling blaze in the fireplace, which is surrounded by cement board dissected by vertical and horizontal pieces of white oak—an unexpected mix of materials that resonated with the owners straightaway. “They were okay with things being a little abstract, asymmetrical and funky,” Storm says, noting the couple’s leanings toward colorful eyewear and bold patterns, as well as Rebecca’s penchant for animal prints. “That made it fun, because you get to try out things that most people wouldn’t go for.”

Enchanted by the natural daylight—and aiming to create a gallery-like space for the couple’s art collection—the designer kept the palette neutral, with crisp white walls and tailored furnishings. In the living area, a white rug with diagonal charcoal and blue stripes grounds a textural sectional sofa and a pair of metal-framed chairs around a chunky wood coffee table—one of several pieces that Rich and Rebecca picked out during a field trip with Storm to the Merchandise Mart. “I wanted to touch and feel everything,” Rebecca says. Supplemented by black pendants suspended from every window dormer, a brass Sputnikinspired chandelier illuminates the space, playing off the pendants over the kitchen islands and the vertical brass inlay in the marble backsplash. “The whole house is very much a mix of metals,” Storm notes, pointing to the custom hood made of matte nickel with polished accents. Covered in wood veneer in a chevron pattern, the headboard wall in the first-floor primary bedroom is a more subdued but equally breathtaking backdrop for a tufted bed with nail-head detailing flanked by shagreen-covered side tables. Nods to the couple’s funky style come in the form of subtle touches, such as a mix of patterned pillows and gold-flecked window treatments. Storm employed an even bolder approach on the upper level, which is designed with visitors in mind. A set of colorful jumbo jacks lining the stairway wall immediately sets the tone. And a graphic silk wallcovering featuring interlocking triangles likewise distinguishes the guest lounge at the top of the stairs. “They aren’t in this space on a daily basis, so they were willing to do something younger and more fun in there,” Storm says. Rebecca was also amenable to the energetic, colorful wallcovering Storm selected for her office, which, since she’s retired, she jokingly calls her “online shopping room.” Taking its cues from the wife’s request for a blush-colored sofa, the unexpected colors and pattern complements the brass accents and cozy seating. Simply put, it’s fun. Just like the Clines themselves. “They wanted drama, and they got it,” Storm says. “We were able to run a little wild, and that was very satisfying.”

Jacqueline Surdell’s use of rope in her topographical interpretations, such as Gully in the Mountains (left), which is constructed of braided cotton cord, allows for a physical interaction with her pieces. Many of her current works in progress (opposite and below) incorporate color and collage.

T

wo things set artist Jacqueline Surdell on her creative path: her grandma and volleyball. Let’s start with her grandmother, whose artistic pursuits were landscape painting and macramé. “I always painted, and in many ways I grew up in her studio,” Surdell recalls. “Landscape as a genre is still really important to my work. She played a huge part in that.” While portrait painting was her early focus, Surdell’s trajectory shifted during her time playing varsity volleyball at Occidental College in Los Angeles. Pondering her next step after the sport, Surdell looked to her artistic practice, but, having spent 10 years as an athlete, painting just wasn’t physical enough. So she began playing with the idea of rope as a medium. “I was thinking a lot about tensile strength—things that can be

limp but have the potential to be extremely strong,” she explains. “I’m not a big person, and so I was always a kind of scrappy player. Rope made a lot of sense in that it’s like muscle and tendons.” Fashioning a loom from a canvas stretcher bar and using nautical rope, Surdell started experimenting with the macramé techniques she had learned from her grandmother. “I was interested in the idea of this small movement being built up over time,” she says. “It’s kind of like sports, where you do the same thing over and over until you don’t even think about it.” Surdell’s technique evolved, and she began using knotting as a connective drawing device that creates structure and defines space. “To me, they look like landscape paintings,” she notes of the topographical nature of her works. “They still have that conversation with painting and with the idea of canvas.”

While her initial works were monochromatic, Surdell’s more recent explorations incorporate color. After discovering a website where she could print any artwork on fabric, Surdell began printing works from the mid-19th-century Hudson River School movement, tearing them into pieces and weaving them among the rope. While the compositions of the original prints aren’t visible, Surdell says it’s about subverting the traditional ideas that such paintings present as the “beginning of America.” Those works, Surdell explains, are mythological representations of westward expansion in which no humans were present. “That is just not true,” she avers. “We’ve been told what this place looked like and who was here first. Ripping up these paintings and re-weaving them into a new canvas is a gesture suggesting we could do something else—we can have a new story or we can add other stories.”

Amid Gilded Age mansions and nouveau chateaus, a design team puts a fresh take on a Lake Geneva summer house.

“This house has classic architectural details that can go either way: super-modern or more traditional,” designer Jennie Bishop says. In the foyer, the design team leaned toward the former, choosing a bold hair-on-hide rug that Studio Gild designed with Oscar Isberian Rugs, a Lagomorph Design organic-meets-industrial bench and The Urban Electric Company pendants.

T

here’s a footpath that follows the 21-mile shoreline of Wisconsin’s Geneva Lake. It winds right through the backyards of summer homes built by legendary families such as the Schwinns, the Wrigleys and the Maytags. But beyond the obvious opportunity it provides—up-close ogling of blue-chip estates—it offers a unique perspective on the lake house in all its forms, from Tudor lodge to turreted Queen Anne. When Chicagoans John and Sarah Cobb and their daughter would amble along the footpath during vacations spent at their home off the water, they’d often imagine the place they would add to that mix. So when a rare lakefront lot came up for sale, they decided to build it. The couple envisioned a contemporary take on the stone-and-shingle cottages of the Northeast, a home anchored by a dramatic catwalk—a concept they had spotted in the portfolio of architects Fred Wilson and Elissa Morgante. So the Cobbs hired the duo and a design took shape, with that striking detail at its core. “I’ve always loved those interstitial spaces,” Wilson says of the catwalk concept, “so I thought, ‘Let’s explore that idea of walking through the trusses.’ ” The suspended hallway—perhaps the most challenging detail tackled by builder John Matustik—spans the home’s double-height great room, passing through the steel chimney and connecting the top-floor bedroom wings. On the main floor, that feature accomplishes a goal that was paramount throughout the house: to strike a balance between grandeur and comfort. “The Cobbs wanted the house to feel like it could absorb 15 of their family and friends but also be comfortable when it’s just the three of them there,” Wilson explains. “The bridge provides a bit of a virtual ceiling, allowing you to feel the vaulted scale of the house but bringing it down so you don’t feel tiny in the space.” The contrast between the home’s front and rear elevations strikes a similar balance. The front, which leans traditional with mullioned windows, is a “more neighborly” one-and-a-half stories tall, Wilson says. The rear soars a full three stories— thanks to the site’s natural slope—expressing a more contemporary language: a standing seam metal roof, steel balcony handrails and wide

windows topped by steel I beams. Uniting the two sides are walls of native Lannon stone and slate-blue shingles. The slate blue nods to Wilson’s passion for incorporating color. He and Morgante proved how cleverly it can be done in the interiors as well. Take the kitchen: There, set among airy white shades with touches of metal and white-oak floors, a serene blue hue grounds the large island, which features a Mondrian-inspired end piece welded from solid steel. “It’s a chilled-out, cooler palette, into which we tried to infuse some warmth,” says designer Jennie Bishop, who furnished the house with help from partners Melissa Benham and Kristen Ekeland. “So it was chunky soft sisals on the floors, stripes on the dining chairs, wallpaper in the bedrooms and a throw everywhere you can sit.” And, perhaps most impactfully, a rusty-toned suede on the great room’s laidback armchairs. “They’re kind of like that New York friend who comes to dinner looking effortlessly tousled—and so much cooler than you do,” Bishop says of the seats. “They’re wrinkled to start with, and they just get better with age.” Which is exactly what the Cobbs wanted. “We said, ‘We want to be able to sit in every seat in a wet bathing suit, and to leave a melting popsicle on any table for two hours—after that, we can be flexible,’ ” John says. Bishop capitalized on that freedom, incorporating bold yet bulletproof furnishings such as a cinnamon-colored quilted chair in the breakfast nook, blue kitchen counter stools that are intentionally “a little clash-y” with the island, and a custom dining table inset with a metal trough. “I want everything to have enough interest that it’s not boring,” she says, “but I don’t want anything to be over the top.” Landscape architect Scott Freres echoed this sentiment when describing his role, which encompassed land contouring, plantings, and designing the property’s bluestone terraces and limestone pool deck. “Everything here is about the lake,” he notes, “so putting in lots of plants just to decorate was not the right approach. Sometimes you have to recognize that the game is not to fight against what you’re given, but to borrow from what’s already there.” And on this storied stretch of waterfront, that turned out to be more than enough.

To create a great room that could handle wet swimsuits and cocktail parties, the designers chose casual yet refined furnishings in durable materials: an outdoor fabric on RH Modern sofas, a laid-back rusty suede for Studio Piet Boon armchairs, bleached ash and tumbled stone from Paris Ceramics for a custom coffee table and a rustic metal trough inset for a custom wood dining table by Studio Gild.

Above: The kitchen island’s steel detail, fabricated by Migala Metal Designs sets the tone for the room. The motif repeats on the wall of cabinetry by JR’s Custom Cabinets, where the steel forms double as door pulls. Crossville’s Sideview glass mosaic wall tiles in matte Tungsten bring the metallic finish to the backsplash. Opposite: The breakfast nook called for custom furnishings, including a large round table designed by Studio Gild and a built-in banquette. Moroso’s Patricia Urquiola-designed Mathilda armchairs feature bright red armbands, while a Circa Lighting pendant provides a soft glow without distracting from the view.

Above: A dramatic catwalk—flanked by dormer windows providing views of the lake on one side and the front yard on the other—spans the vaulted great room, connecting the home’s top-floor bedroom wings. The hall passes beneath massive wood trusses and through the steel chimney on its way to the home’s main staircase. Opposite: The grand staircase provides one of the home’s more modern design moments, thanks to sleek wood-andsteel railings and Tech Lighting’s customizable Mina Locus fixture, whose optic-crystal orbs float from the third floor all the way down to the first. The reclaimed-wood artwork is by Michelle Peterson-Albandoz of Las Manos Gallery.

Right: A Morgante Wilson Architects-designed live-edge wood vanity and striated blue tile from Renaissance Tile & Bath create a casual vibe for the bunk room’s adjacent bath, while Circa Lighting sconces and unlacquered brass Waterworks faucets dress things up with a bit of polish. Opposite: For the main bedroom, Studio Gild designed a custom wood-and-metal bed and nightstands in hues inspired by sand and water, then added two Atelier Areti brushed-brass light fixtures for drama.

Above: “There’s a beautiful roll to the property, so we tried to preserve and plant that so it became a feature,” says landscape architect Scott Freres, who, with field director Zac McConnell, installed minimal foliage that never deters from the view to the lake. RH chaise lounges line the gunite pool, which has a dark interior for a natural look. Opposite: Sweeping staircases connect the home’s bluestone patios to a limestone terrace that Freres positioned 36 inches higher than the pool deck “so when you’re sitting there, you’re looking clear out to the lake,” he says. An RH sofa, West Elm lounge chairs and Cane-Line crocheted footstools cozy up to the fire pit.
