This issue of Luxe is essentially a love letter to the people who make design happen. In addition to our annual GOLD LIST, which recognizes talents from across the country who have had their projects featured in our pages the past year, we celebrate creative originators and innovators: a community and collective of people who are grounded in their craft and dedicated to pushing design forward. We thank all of you for imagining and enriching the homes we live in. As the rhythms of daily life begin to return, and the pandemic recedes into the rear view, I am hopeful that the meaningfulness of home, and the people who reimagine the spaces of our everyday life, will remain in our hearts and minds.

Luxe celebrates people in design, including interior designers Rayman Boozer (above), Martyn Lawrence Bullard (middle) and Young Huh (right).

And at the heart of this high-performance heart of the home is its appliance suite. That’s where Beko comes in. A global appliance manufacturer with a product presence in 400 million homes in 140 countries, Beko is driven by a three-fold commitment to helping people be well through the production of appliances that promote health. The brand also believes that healthy people are only possible on a healthy planet, so it employs a zero-carbon manufacturing process. TALKING SHOP CKS COLLECTIVE

After over a decade working within the Chicago design scene, last August Christina Karvelas Stavropoulos took a leap and opened a small boutique showroom in West Town featuring the work of the 11 artisans that she represents through CKS Collective. “I started the company in my basement in March and orders were really strong,” she says. “But I needed a living, breathing space to show these emerging talents.” Of the artisans she represents, lighting designer Gabriel Scott is probably the best known, but it’s important to Stavropoulos to also find and represent newer and lesser-known artisans. The gallery has a few ready-to-go pieces, but the vast majority are custom made, and Stavropoulos welcomes the chance to facilitate collaboration among the client,

designer and artisan to make a unique piece perfectly sized for a specific space. And because she only chooses artisans and collections that she loves, a side benefit is that pieces can be combined across lines in the same room. “All the lines play well with each other,” she says. “It’s been great to see designers order 10 pieces from different lines and they all look fabulous together.” ckscollective.com

At its new location in Bucktown, Pagoda Red is hosting an exhibition of artist Michael Thompson’s kites through March 12. “Each one is its own meditative color story,” says Betsy Nathan, owner of Pagoda Red. “There’s a different spirit to this group; they’re very beautiful and abstract but you see cohesion there.” Thompson has long played with the medium of kites and has exhibited groups of these split-bamboo-frame collages in large spaces, like the lobby of the Goodman Theatre and the exhibition hall at Navy Pier. Not to be outdone, Pagoda Red seems uniquely suited to house an installation of Thompson’s kites. During the pandemic, they moved their gallery and retail into their warehouse space and have found advantages to having the whole business in one place. “It’s a voluminous space with raw timber and 40-foot ceilings,” Nathan says. “The juxtaposition of fine art, old furniture and old architecture feels very current and modern.” pagodared.com

DESIGN

Kelly McDermott knows her kitchen design. As a Chicago-based member of the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s Thirty under 30 2020 class, she focuses on how to make a new home or renovation stunning, but also workable. “People want to maximize storage and flow in their kitchens, but they also want it to be beautiful and timeless,” she says. “Form and function are both important, since they’ll use their kitchen for years and years.” Here, McDermott reveals her favorite finds from the showrooms of LuxeHome, perfect for the kitchen. luxehome.com

ANN SACKS IDRIS BY AIT MANOS This new collection of zellige tiles is handmade in Morocco. “It would make a lovely backsplash in a neutral shade,” McDermott says. “Or for a bold statement, use one of the mosaic patterns.” The look may be up-to-the-minute, but because it’s based on centuries-old design, it never reads as trendy.

STUART COHEN

How does collaboration push artistic progress forward? The creative process builds upon what we know, extending and transforming it. Collaborators share and build upon one another’s ideas. Think about Braque and Picasso painting side by side and inventing Cubism together. What did the chance to design residences mean to Wright, Spencer, Perkins and Hunt? How we live in our houses is understood at any point in time as a social norm. At times of social change, in this case the rise of an American middle class, the house can become a laboratory for new forms of architecture that reflect those changes. Why is residential architecture significant? Brilliant residential architecture responds to the needs of those it is designed for as well as its site and can improve the sense of well-being.

Designed as a seamless built-in, this pizza oven caught McDermott’s eye because it combines the power needed to bake pizza with sleek style. The fact that it can be used for roasting meats and veggies, as well as baking artisanal bread just adds to its usefulness.

CARLISLE WIDE PLANK FLOOR EARTHEN COLLECTION With white oak flooring in high demand and low supply, Carlisle has introduced a line made of hickory that offers a more refined look than the wood’s usual rustic finish. Hickory is also a harder wood, so, as McDermott notes, it’s perfect for a kitchen that sees a lot of foot traffic.

DELTA GLASS RINSER Do you need a glass rinser in your kitchen or bar? Maybe not, but it’s one small item that takes convenience to the next level. While long used in commercial kitchens, McDermott can see homeowners loving the ability to quickly rinse anything from baby bottles to fine stemware.

As the recipient of the American Institute of Architects Chicago chapter’s 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award, it’s safe to say Stuart Cohen knows a thing or two about architecture. Not only has his work as a principal at Cohen & Hacker Architects been recognized worldwide, but he has also published four books on Chicago architecture, the latest of which, Frank L. Wright and the Architects of Steinway Hall: A Study in Collaboration, looks at the influence architects Frank L. Wright, Robert C. Spencer Jr., Dwight H. Perkins and Myron Hunt had on each other. cohen-hacker.com

MEET THE MAKERS REFRACTORY

There’s a new kid in town, and if you’re looking for artisan-crafted furniture, lighting and objets d’art, you’ll want to make an introduction. Refractory, a Chicago-based studio, recently launched its inaugural 40-piece collection. Started by Angie West and Alberto Vélez—who both previously worked at Holly Hunt—the goal was to draw on the deep well of experience of both the founders and collaborating artisans to make pieces that stand at the intersection of functional art and collectible design. Luxe sat down with West to learn a bit more about the studio’s process. refractory.studio First, tell me about West Supply, which is your original company and now production partner for Refractory. When I was with Holly Hunt, we made a small drink table with a local bronze foundry. I heard the shop was going to close its doors and I decided to buy it and reinvent it. It had two employees and a lot of neglected equipment. Now we have 40 employees and have really expanded our capacity. Refractory feeds West Supply projects, but it’s a different machine.

Where do you turn for inspiration? We’re leaning into the magic of nature, the durability of the frontier and creatures that have survived for millennia. Sometimes it’s the unseen and microscopic, and sometimes it’s the play of material and ideas. What new pieces are you working on? We’ll continue building our body of work with more lighting and sculpture coming this year. We also want to shepherd other artisans in Chicago and not just create, but also enhance the livelihoods of master craftspeople.

MEET THE MAKERS: JONATHAN ALLEN.

How did Refractory come to be? Alberto also worked at Holly Hunt. He was creating new collections in bronze, and we worked on that together. Last summer he was available, so we partnered to form Refractory.

THREE DESIGNERS REFLECT ON AN INDELIBLE SPARK.

Martyn Lawrence Bullard

AS TOLD TO MICHELLE BRUNNER

When I was 12 years old, I began my career selling antiques from a stall in London’s Greenwich Market. It was the 1980s then, and Art Deco was the height of fashion. It was one of the first design periods that I studied, and from that, my passion grew. Because I came from a theatrical background—originally, I wanted to be an actor—it’s only natural that I would be drawn to a style so closely associated with Hollywood glamour. With the advent of cinema, Los Angeles boomed during the 1920s and 1930s, and extraordinary spaces, like the Cicada Club in downtown L.A. and the historic Sunset Tower hotel, were built. For me, the appeal of Art Deco lies in its association with decadence. The world had just come out of World War I, and there was reason to celebrate. People wanted drama and floridity. We left behind the Edwardian and Arts-and-Crafts periods, and turned almost instantly to this brand-new era symbolized by ornate geometric forms. Of all the Art Deco styles, I’m particularly fond of Egyptian Revival. It conjures the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, and with that, an air of adventure, travel and romance. In my work and in my own home, many Orientalist and Moroccan motifs blend with the geometric vibe and monochromatic palette of Art Deco. Recently, I drew inspiration from the period to inform a collection of inlaid stone and lacquer accessories for SV Casa. We did a series of beautiful cases that open into bars, inspired by Hermès and Louis Vuitton steamer trunks from the 1930s. They recall one of the first Art Deco pieces I ever bought: a 1920s alligator case, which makes me long for the time when travel was new. In those days, people used silver- and-gold jars in sleek cases for toiletries. We used to travel in such style! I’ve kept it with me throughout my journeys. It’s a great nod to my past, both in my dealing in objects of that era and my love of Art Deco itself. Martyn Lawrence Bullard on the steps leading to the pool and gardens of his Los Angeles home. The graphic patio tile nods to Art Deco geometrics.

I was born in Seoul, South Korea, but moved to Michigan when I was three. Most of my ideas about my home country came from my parents, who were passionate about collecting and preserving Korean art. One of my favorite early memories was flying to New York City with my mother. She was shopping for a scholar screen— an artwork meant to decorate the study of a Yangban (a scholar of the highest class). They depict items a Yangban might exhibit to show his refinement: books, a peony, ink brushes. My mother was also searching for folk art—colorful, informal paintings, often with suggestive subject matter. I learned then that there were two schools of Korean art: the school based on courtly formalities, and the folk art hung in the homes of merchants or shamans. Adolescent me became fascinated with folk art. Rabbits smoking pipes! Mountains in every color under the sun! The rainbow hanbok of young girls! To me, these visions were the heartbeat of traditional Korean art—and today, they inspire every inch of my design aesthetic.

Some people think decorating is about picking pretty fabrics, but it is rooted in soils far deeper than that. As I design this home, I think of all the people who have lived here over the last two centuries, my family tree that dates back 700 years, and my children who will carry the future— and who, I hope, will tell everyone’s story. Young Huh in her Manhattan office, framed by inspiration images and wallpaper samples. The large pink swatch is a custom, in-the-works concept for her country house.

Last year, I purchased a home in New York’s Hudson Valley: a classic Colonial in the most idyllic countryside setting. As I dreamt of how to decorate, my thoughts turned to my heritage. One project I’m working on is designing a wallpaper with Fromental, inspired by the papers out of East Asia, which were traded in the New World in the 17th century. I’ll be incorporating both the structure of courtly paintings and the brightness of folk art, all presented in a modern way.

Fashioning a Narrative

Ever since I was a child on a farm in Indiana, fashion has been my obsession. I was the middle child of nine—the Jan Brady of our family, and sort of invisible. After seeing The Mary Tyler Moore Show, my dream became to live in a city in an apartment. At age 8, I made a pact that I would one day move to New York and do glamorous things with my life. We didn’t have a ton of money, but my mother had amazing style. She made a lot of our clothes—think: red-white-and-blue bell bottoms with matching shirts. Even at age 5, I was picky about what colors I wanted to wear, and I hated being dressed like my brothers—I wanted control! Growing up, I fell in love with magazines. I’d go down to the local newsstand and pour over Vogue and GQ. One day, a handful of subscription cards fell out, and I noticed the “bill me later” part. I asked the shopkeeper if I could have them, filled them out, and for three months, I built a library. In high school, my parents let me get subscriptions—but I held onto those issues and read them over and over.

A lot of people see fashion as trivial, but I believe that it’s a nonverbal way of communicating with like-minded people. Especially in Manhattan, you’re always presenting yourself to the public in some way. For me, fashion is armor. It’s a silent means of declaring who you are. Rayman Boozer stands at the threshold of his Manhattan closet wearing a Prada sweater and slacks (his favorite fashion house) and Tods loafers.

When I went to college, I declared a fashion design major before finding interiors. What I am is a strong fashion editor—I’m good at pairing things together in interesting ways: colors, textures, attitudes—and a mix of high-low. My velvet Gucci blazer with a Uniqlo sweater; a leather Prada trench coat with my favorite Scotch and Soda jeans. Fashion also feeds my approach to color—you see daring combinations on the runway before the home. This, in part, is what keeps my interiors optimistic and open-minded.

Provence

Happy place: About 7 years ago, I rented a 300-year-old house outside of Avignon with my family—and it was kind of an epiphany. We’d spend mornings by the pool, then drive through the Rhône and visit towns, like Roussillon, which has this incredible sandstone, terra-cotta and ochre palette. Only fitting: Provence has a similar climate to Los Angeles, and the building materials—stucco, painted wood windows and shutters, tiled roofs—are essentially the same as Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, a primary vernacular of Southern California. Dream delivered: From the minute you walk in the front gate, you’re in this other world of pea gravel, olive trees and lavender. You enter the house through a pair of French doors, and it’s all very open and transparent. To me, it’s transportive emotionally. The clients, the design team and I were all so taken with the authenticity of the Provençal lifestyle; we tried to capture it’s relaxed, casual elegance in this home. willigerarchitect.com

Rockefeller Center

RADAR

Designer Bill Musso found inspiration for his Atlanta condo in a beloved landmark’s Art Deco mystique.

main photo: getty. inset: lauren rubinstein.

Early influence: My grandmother was enamored with Radio City Music Hall. Whenever she had the opportunity, she would take me to see a live show or a movie. We’d spend time walking around Rockefeller Center, and she would point out all of the friezes and statues. Aha moment: Four years ago, I did the 30 Rock tour. I wasn’t so interested in the TV aspect, but in wandering the halls and common spaces and taking pictures! Ode to Deco: The marble floor in my entry was inspired by an elevator waiting area at 30 Rock; I worked with The Rug Company on a runner that’s literally an adaptation of the carpeting in Radio City Music Hall; and my interior doors have the same Art Deco-influenced, raised panel design. Balancing act: Inspiration is all about knowing when to peel back. Like Coco Chanel famously advised: stand in front of the mirror and remove one item. I’d never want to feel like I’m living in a time capsule (as much as I love wearing a smoking jacket). mussodesigngroup.com

A Vintage Photograph

Unexpected idea: This photo of Sonny Bono and former Mayor Frank Bogert was the first inspiration image we showed our client. We overlaid it with a pink filter to tease out the magical light that happens at sunset in Palm Springs. There’s a rugged romance—a laid-back, masculine mood to it—that sung to us. Desert journey: There’s no front yard or backyard, per se. You enter through a portal in the Ficus, then move through these different sequences that are always changing: a fire pit surrounded by muhly grass, a palo Verde grove, an olive tree dining orchard. It speaks to this notion of traveling on horseback through an ephemeral landscape. Message received: For this project, we “borrowed” palm trees from the neighbors’ yards—and the San Jacinto mountains peaking above the hedges. At sunset, with the pink grasses in full bloom, the image of the cowboys and the palms—that feeling of a total Palm Springs escape—is really what you’re getting. sdisf.com

The English Country House

Mood board: From the first time I saw the property, the story in my mind was that it was a kooky British grandmother’s house that had been passed down to the next generation. It’s a large, new construction home, but the way the rooms were laid out—the intimacy of scale and the classical millwork— suggested history. Hero piece: I’ve always been drawn to tapestries, and here, they provided a strong “old manor house” through line. We hung a large 18thcentury Flemish tapestry in the living room and wallpapered the dining room in a Scalamandré print for a European country house vibe. Homework: I pinned about a billion pictures. Upton House, a Georgian manor in Gloucestershire that we referenced, has this hall with the most perfect minty green, which inspired the shades of celadon throughout. I love historical colors; tertiary tones are so much more interesting. studiohus.com

Sophia Loren

High-octane starlet glamour inspired Samantha Todhunter’s interpretation of an Aspen ski retreat.

main photo: oliver clarke. inset: getty.

Modern muse: Our projects often begin with a sensibility imbued by a person, and in this case, Sophia Loren was one of our initial drivers for the mood and design intent; she’s the very embodiment of la dolce vita. Dramatic details: My clients wanted to transform a pastiche Colorado lodge into a home that was cool, effortless and glamorous; a space that lights up at night for entertaining, but also provides a languishing daytime salon. A core element to our work is always ‘the mix’ and for this dolce vita-driven project, the mix manifests in interesting combinations of textures and weaves. Think: mohair velvets and metallic glazed linens, marble and lacquer, and patinated brass elements. Secret sauce: It can be easy to go over the top, especially when you are going for high-impact design. The art is to know when you have done enough to tell the story. A successful room is all about artful layering drawn from travel, books, nature, art, history—and iconic people. samanthatodhunter.com

For a new home in Point Reyes Station, California, architect Dave Sturm channeled a design icon’s purist approach. Origin story: Our client grew up visiting Mexico and had loved Barragán since childhood. Field work: I was a budding architect when Barragán won the Pritzker Prize, and had been wanting to visit his home for decades. This project prompted my wife and I to spend two weeks in Mexico City. We visited several museums a day, and many Barragán buildings. I immersed myself in his spatial relationships. Good stuff: Barragán had this really limited, yet influential palette; a very high-modern aesthetic. His pink is almost like the national color. Key details: Nothing extraneous; we brought the walls all the way down to the floor—no trim, baseboards or moldings. And we used steel casement-style windows for the cleanest sight lines. Take it back: It’s a reference, not an homage. We were inspired by his simplicity. If Barragán had signed on, I imagine the walls might be pink. butlerarmsden.com

WITH HER LATEST COLLECTION, DESIGNER LORI WEITZNER DELIVERS AN ODE TO CENTRAL PARK. W R I T T E N B Y H E AT H E R C A R N E Y

Imagine wandering through Central Park. Bright pink petals highlight a grid between cobblestones. Intricate moldings and sandstone carvings come into focus on stair railings. At sunset, the city skyline turns from orange to golden to purple to gray. It’s this romantic setting that provided designer Lori Weitzner with hope and refuge during the dark days of the pandemic—while also opening her eyes to patterns, textures and colors hidden in plain sight. “It was a lesson in the idea that you’re so familiar with something that you stop looking,” says the designer. “I began to see everything in a whole new way.” The resulting collection is an ode to Central Park—an exploration of fabrics and wallcoverings that captures the beauty of a city in the midst of rebirth. “I love New York. It’s what keeps my senses alive. You pass a bakery, then you pass litter on the street. It’s all there,” says Weitzner. “Central Park is an oasis to the urban grit.” IPhone in hand, the designer would “click, click, click” on weekly rambles through her sanctuary, then return to her quiet Chelsea design studio where she printed and arranged the photos on a large white table. From there, the creative work would begin—editing, sorting, sketching and playing with colors and materials. Chariot, for example, a soft jacquard linen with subtle damask patterning, evolved from an image she snapped of traditional stonework near Bethesda Fountain. “We painted it in the studio, and then, because we didn’t want such a traditional pattern, we took a sponge

and broke it up with texture so it would feel eroded,” explains Weitzner. Illumination, an embroidered textile, stems from sketches of foliage in the Shakespeare Garden, while Mesmerize, a cut velvet print, takes its cues from the fountain’s stone filigree. With the line complete and her schedule picking up, it might be surprising to hear that the designer still carves out time to walk in the park—but it’s a habit she’s not willing to give up. “The pandemic made me slow down and appreciate the details,” reflects Weitzner. “This collection is about nature, but it’s also about seeing things anew.”

By the 1930s, Eileen Gray was a solidified furniture designer and architect—a rare accomplishment for a woman by early 20th-century standards. Of her many contributions to the modern movement, the Irish-born creative designed the ubiquitous (and replicated) adjustable side table, which she designed specifically for her home dubbed E-1027, shown above, on the French Riviera. Gray set out to build the residence— her first ever—in her late 40s, and it still stands today as a survey of modern design.

PASSION PROJECT MATTHEW QUINN

What a beautifully layered space! This kitchen is an homage to the owner, whose zeal for art, food and life shines through in the design. When she and her family moved from Mexico to the Atlanta area, they acquired a charming bungalow property and she promptly saved her pennies for 12 years to have her dream “Matthew Quinn” kitchen, as she explained, which was truly the ultimate compliment. Wow. What did she request? Thinking outside of the box was important to the client. She wanted to make the kitchen uniquely her own, which included covering the walls with art, creating plenty of storage for cookbooks and even adding cork flooring that provides comfort when standing and cooking. But it’s really about this funky mix of colors and materials that works so well together. Talk to us about the details. The Amazonia Quartzite screamed “bar area.” The boldly colored veining of the stone is paired with an equally striking blue paint on the cabinetry that creates a vibrant, fun moment. In the kitchen, white-glass countertops and high-gloss Macassar Ebony veneer cabinetry balance out the La Cornue range and brass finishes. Makassar Ebony Veneer Cabinetry, downsviewkitchens.com. Amazonite Stone, abcworldwidestone.com.

STRATEGIC APPROACH “I fell in love with kitchens because of their technicality—I like to focus on the architectural plan first; I’m a big stickler for rectangular and square rooms. From there, we address access points, center lines, location of appliances, storage, circulation, ergonomics and functionality. After nearly 30 years in the business, I can immediately pinpoint what needs to be tweaked, but if the kitchen works well, I know I can make it beautiful.” matthew-quinn.com

BATH + KITCHEN

CALMING INFLUENCE CHRISTOPHER PEACOCK What was the inspiration for this serene palette? A big, beautiful picture window decorates the kitchen, and we didn’t want the rest of the space to compete with that focal point, so there was a conscious effort to keep the colors more earthy and muted. We went with a two-tone paint effect for the cabinetry: a lovely olive or sage green on the island and then a warmer gray on the perimeter. Walk us through the rest of the design. The scheme was about making it simple and quiet while keeping it spacious. There wasn’t a strong desire to fill the walls with unnecessary cabinetry; rather our focus was on the

materials and finishes. A handmade subway tile with varying shades makes for a beautiful backsplash that provides subtle movement; we avoided anything too shiny and went with brushed and satin nickel hardware. How did you approach scale? This is a very large kitchen with a barreled ceiling. So we grounded the environment with a large island featuring cutting blocks at both ends and a custom pewter-and-nickel metal hood that anchors one wall. The island table developed into a multifunctional element with storage and seating, as well as a place to work, prepare food and entertain.

TOP TAKEAWAY “The key is to be a good listener, have an inquisitive mind and a holistic or all-encompassing approach. If you watch what happens in most people’s kitchens today, it’s not kitchen related. It’s a gathering space, an entertaining space, a quiet space. Sometimes it’s a retreat or a place to relax—it’s all these things. We have to understand how the kitchen is being used because this room has matured into the most important space in the home. It’s critical to get the design right. Trust the people you’re working with—a kitchen renovation is an everlasting project.” peacockhome.com La Jolla Scone, paulferrante.com. BATH + KITCHEN LIVING

HERITAGE MOMENT SARAH BLANK

This kitchen is in an older home, right? It’s an absolutely stunning Spanish Renaissance residence that was built in the early 1900s along the Hudson River. Unfortunately, the kitchen was in bad shape after a recent update, but I was lucky that the client wanted to go back to its historic character. I am a big believer in taking from the past to create the future and spent a lot of time understanding the original aesthetic of this property.

How does your background inform your designs? I love classical architecture and historic structures—I’ve been a part of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art for a long time. Everything I do now, even after all this time, goes back to the aesthetic of old homes and what they teach us.

LUXESOURCE.COM

Sarah Blank Design Studio chose Farrow & Ball’s Stone Blue for the island in this Irvington, New York, kitchen by Taconic Builders. A BlueStar range, Miele oven and custom hood complete the scheme.

EXPERT TIP “Here’s a trick for anyone embarking on a new kitchen project: Do not clean up when the designer comes over to see how you live. If you tidy up before I arrive, how am I going to know what the problems are? I spend a lot of time talking to clients and asking what they want, but what tells me even more is opening all the cabinets and drawers and looking at their inventory and how everything is stored. Once I know what’s behind closed doors, I can design your kitchen! My new book, Classic Kitchens for Modern Living, is certainly a culmination of everything I have learned over the past 40 years!” sarahblankdesignstudio.com

photo: neil landino. book cover: images publishing, march 2022.

Where did you start? Before I did anything, there were several architectural changes that needed to be made, including taking down a wall, reworking a window and altering the ceiling. Then, I began the mission of taking a very narrow kitchen and making it functional. A lot of the elements, such as the metalwork and wood detailing, are inspired by 19th-century European kitchens.

HIGH-DESIGN BAR SPACES TOP CLIENTS’ WISH LISTS.

LIVING

“ A hand-painted, high-gloss cabinetry color was customized around the wallcovering in this Short Hills, New Jersey, project. We always ask and try to push our clients to do something a little more unexpected in smaller spaces. The outcome was beautiful.”

“The client had an impressive collection of vintage glassware and entertained a lot, so from the very beginning of our conversation we knew the bar would be an important component. The homeowner was drawn to the vibrant color and stone elements. The resulting happy mix is truly a reflection of her.” –MATTHEW QUINN

“ T his Stamford, Connecticut, jewel of a room is both a wet bar and wine room, as well as a butler’s pantry. The homeowner fell in love with the tiger maple wood, while the high-gloss ceiling and its reflective quality make the room feel deceptively large.” –SARAH BLANK

Bright Young Things

JEAN LIN, COLONY In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, then-design journalist Jean Lin sparked an idea: invite local New York City artists to craft works from debris for storm relief. In the process, Lin grew familiar with the growth and representation struggles faced by independent makers—and the idea for a new, community-driven gallery model was born. Where the industry-standard commission hovers around 50 percent, Colony takes a smaller fraction of each sale, and charges a stabilized monthly co-op fee. Their contract also includes a non-exclusivity clause, which “shows our true intention of putting the bottom line of the designers we rep before our own,” says Lin. Expanding its influence and capital, Colony has since launched an in-house consultancy offering marketing, art direction and interior design services. “The vision moving forward is that these branches of business scale in tandem,” says Lin. “Which goes back to Colony’s founding spirit and genuine belief that all ships rise with the tide.” goodcolony.com

THE CURATOR

THE INNOVATOR

“I don’t love the word ‘disruption,’ but I am passionate about asking the question, ‘how can we make people’s lives easier?’ And I think the answer to that lies in meeting them where they are,” shares Anderson Somerselle. For Somerselle, a veteran of the textiles industry, this passion manifested in a digital-first showroom designed to aggregate boutique lines—as well as their up-to-date stock numbers and samples—in one destination. “It’s an honest response to witnessing how many designers and clients start their inspiration process online,” he notes. With the lower overhead associated with a digital footprint, Somerselle also provides a more affordable representation avenue for smaller brands. “It made sense to bring together these amazing artisans in a virtual showroom first, because there’s more reach,” he explains. “Eventually, we’ll open a physical space, but that will be a totally different experience. I want people to say, ‘Wow! I want to live here.’ ” somerselle.com

THE RECONCEIVERS NOAM DVIR AND DANIEL RAUCHWERGER, BOND

In a past life, Noam Dvir and Daniel Rauchwerger worked as critics at the Israeli newspaper Haaretz before falling in love, heading west to earn their masters at Harvard and founding BoND, a holistic architecture and design firm focused on expanding traditional ideologies of home. “In the residential environment, there’s this mold of how a space should be organized—but design for non-nuclear families looks different,” explains Dvir, pointing to the themes of gathering and desire that often distinguish their work. “Design should explore many different identities and lifestyles, and we really wear that on our sleeves.” With a fast-expanding residential practice, the couple has their sights set on more cultural projects in the commercial space. (They recently designed Company Gallery, a leading queer art institution, and are fast at work on a trans-led after-hours nightclub.) “It’s very important to us to work on projects that people will have access to, and that feed us spiritually,” says Rauchwerger, adding, “the real fun comes in sharing.” bureaund.com

ZOE FELDMAN, ZOE FELDMAN DESIGN

“I truly don’t know a lot about sustainability—and that’s kind of the point!” demurs Zoe Feldman. For the Washington, D.C.-based designer, the birth of her daughter in 2018 collided with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s devastating special report on global warming, spurring her to evaluate her own role in the climate crisis. After researching avenues of impact—and

upon discovering that planting a tree only costs 5 cents— she designed a green pledge as a core pillar of her business. Aptly named Our Beautiful Planet, the framework includes donating her consultation fee to an environmental charity (then matching it upon contract signing), planting 100 trees for every approved design proposal (offsetting its carbon footprint), and a commitment to sourcing 80 percent vintage. Feldman hopes to turn this working template into a movement that designers can adapt to suit their practice. “These are easy things to implement,” she says. “We’re trying to show the industry that we can all take very small, simple steps and potentially, make a massive impact.” zoefeldmandesign.com

THE STORYTELLERS HOMAN RAJAI AND ELENA DENDIBERIA, STUDIO AHEAD

For Homan Rajai and Elena Dendiberia, design is both a global and local affair. What it is not is siloed around Eurocentrism. Meeting as young designers, the pair, with their respective Iranian and Russian roots, felt similarly disconnected from the world of European antiques they were living in, so they built a new framework. Questions like, What philosophies do you relate to? distinguish their client questionnaire, and Rajai and Dendiberia champion a diverse network of vendors working in traditional crafts. “There’s this assumption that—say, Persian rugs—are in the past tense. We’re educating our clients that there are living, breathing, modern-day craftspeople making these pieces,” says Rajai. At the other end of the spectrum, the firm is devoted to amplifying design at a hyper-local scale—and boasts a fast-expanding production wing of collaborations between Northern California artists. “Think of Alice Waters and what she did with farm-to-table,” says Rajai. “We’re bringing the same idea to design.” studioahead.com

THE BOTANIST JESSICA VIOLA, VIOLA GARDENS

A promise to “seek biological over technical solutions” nests at the core of Jessica Viola’s approach to the garden. Certified in ecological and permaculture design, Viola (one of a handful of licensed female landscape contractors in California) cut her teeth rehabilitating lawns into gardens in the California drought. Those regenerative principles have propelled her business since. Whether sculpting brims in the landscape to better harness rainfall, or planting for erosion control and fire resistance, Viola’s bottom line is embracing the intrinsic characteristics of each property, fostering the age-old relationships between people, flora and fauna amidst a changing climate. In this way, tackling the crisis becomes a creative exercise: “When you’re coming at things from a place of fear, you block what’s possible,” says Viola. “Instead of trying to solve all the world’s problems, I’m facilitating conditions for more awareness—and going one garden at a time.” violagardens.com

CONGRATULATIONS to all of the honorees

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS

Looking for a company that does it all? We are a kitchen manufacturer, yes, but we don’t just manufacture kitchens. One of the things that sets us apart is we design, we build, and we install. Even then, we’re not finished. We always follow up with our customers, adjusting anything that needs adjusting, and ensuring everything is exactly to their liking. So, come visit our new showroom at 1170 Milwaukee in Glenview (next to Abt) and let us help you bring quality home.

In markets across the country, buyers and sellers alike are prioritizing more space and better in-house or in-building amenities. ALFRESCO AMENITIES When asked what must-have features buyers are obsessing over, Gustafson says, “Outdoor space is key. We are finding that clients seek vast private open-air spaces, along with amenity programs that include areas for entertaining, pools and fitness studios for personal training, Pilates and yoga.”

SATURDAY SUBLIME A real estate pro’s work is never done, but Gustafson manages to mix in play on a beautiful Saturday. “I like waking up early while my house is still quiet, planning the calendar for the next week and tying up loose ends so I can start off fresh the following week. A long walk with my two dogs, Kaya and Daisy, followed by brunch outside with my family, is ideal. Our kids usually have jam-packed days with ballet and sports, and then we often meet friends for dinner, perhaps at Nabuki or for a barbecue in our backyard in Hinsdale.”

hen it comes to real estate, there’s something to be said for potential; the idea that a blank space can be transformed into a home that reflects the owners’ style and personalities. That is what sold a longtime Lincoln Park couple on their new digs at One Bennett Park, the much-talked-about, high-rise development in the city’s buzzy Streeterville neighborhood. Having such vision was necessary—their first tour of the unit consisted of riding a temporary construction elevator up the side of the stillunfinished building. Upon arrival, they dared not walk within 20 feet of the wall-less edge, the frigid autumn breeze stinging their faces. The bird’s eye views, however, along with the refined renderings by renowned architect Robert A.M. Stern quickly sold them on the three-bedroom space. “It’s really special and unusual,” the husband says, pointing to the unobstructed views encompassing Lake Michigan, the Chicago River and parts of the glittering skyline. The next step was making it their own, so they turned to designer Bruce Fox and general contractor Peter Stefanopoulos. “We really liked Bruce’s style—sort of formal to funky—and his use of color,” the wife says, noting that the result is comparable to her own fashion sensibilities. “I always wear something with a click, a jingle or sparkle—something that pops.” Tasked with creating spaces that celebrated the views without competing with them, Fox’s design includes such moments in every room. A large-scale, glassand-brass chandelier softly reflects off the formal dining room’s pearlescent ceiling finish while iron cocktail tables with agate slices integrated into the bases elevate the adjacent living room. “The light shines through and does interesting things,” Fox says, describing the tables as “the jewelry in the room.” Because the couple sacrificed their large, park-like yard for life in the clouds, the designer looked to nature for inspiration, painting the living room in a distinct, almost turquoise shade of blue that reflects the ubiquitous water views. Separated by cased openings, the dining and sitting room walls on either side of the living

room are covered with an earthy tan-and-white striped grass cloth that reminds the wife of ripples in the sand. One of several wallcoverings throughout, the designer incorporated a more traditional sea-green grass cloth in the main bedroom, creating a serene backdrop for a built-in bed with a channel-tufted headboard upholstered in a patterned cut-velvet fabric. Not all the colors are so subdued. In the living room, a pair of acrylic chairs with patterned rust-colored velvet upholstery contrast with twin cream sofas that face one another. “We wanted them to pop,” Fox says, noting that the wife’s love for a little drama gave him some freedom. “There are little shots of personality I knew the wife could handle.” That goes double for her office where, drawing inspiration from a painting by Chicago artist Rhonda K. Brown, the walls are painted in a pink hue accented by a purple sofa, dark plum side tables—one of the wife’s favorite colors—and a custom desk with a blue-white-and-gold motif reminiscent of sea glass. Throughout the home, there is a subtle ’70s vibe that infuses the design. “The Karl Springer vellum table in the living room is definitely a blast from the past,” Fox says. “And though the sitting room sofa is contemporary, it does kind of have a mod quality.” It is, as he notes, a reference to the era without “going all the way back.” Heeding his clients’ wishes, the designer never sacrificed comfort for style. Covered in a dark blue velvet, for example, the swivel chairs in the sitting area are as cozy as they are stylish, allowing guests to easily shift between views of the stunning city skyline and the handsome new built-in with bespoke eglomise panels and a low-slung fireplace that Stefanopoulos installed. “Bruce understands that at the end of the day, elegance has to be comfortable for the owner,” the husband notes. “I feel so good being here,” the wife says, pointing to the spectacular, ever-changing vistas and elegant yet eclectic interior design. “Bruce is open to new ideas, and he loves to push the boundaries, so it’s fun to work with him,” she adds. To Fox, creating that emotional connection is the most satisfying part of his job. “I want the project to have a little of their personality,” he says. “I ask myself, ‘How do I make this house a home?’ It’s much more intentional.”

In the entry of this high-rise condo by architect Robert A.M. Stern, designer Bruce Fox introduced the color palette using a delightful hand-painted wallcovering by North Carolina-based Ricci Studio. It provides a water-like backdrop for a gold, coral-esque mirror from Kravet over a console table by deAurora.

Rendered in hues that play off the expansive lake vistas, the living room’s custom area rug by J.D. Staron from Kravet anchors a pair of matching sofas by Barron Custom Furniture and acrylic lounge chairs by Thayer Coggin from CAI Designs. ometimes, no matter the effort exerted, transforming a residence into a place that truly feels like home seems simply impossible. A Hinsdale couple discovered this after two renovations to their nice (but typical) suburban house still did not yield the more open, Californiastyle abode they desired. So, when construction started just a few blocks away—looking far more interesting than most new builds in their ‘hood— they paid attention. “On our walks, we watched this house go up and had heard it was a builder’s own home,” the wife says. The dream team behind the dwelling included architect Michael Abraham, designer Megan Hickman and her husband, builder Mark Hickman. “It was unique and definitely our favorite in the neighborhood, so when we were ready, we knew who to call,” the wife adds. The couple found an appealing lot in nearby Clarendon Hills just a five-minute walk to stores and restaurants, but it was also sloped and hemmed in by streets on both the front and back. Before the couple put in an offer, they met with Abraham to see if it was possible to build their ideal home on the site. “They started to describe an Airbnb that they’d stayed at in Austin,” Abraham says. “As they were describing it, I realized that I’d stayed in the same house just two weeks before we met.” The ironic coincidence didn’t just provide a laugh, it also allowed for an indepth understanding of what the couple wanted. With that knowledge, the architect felt sure that they could deal with the lot’s challenges. “Our biggest priority was to not waste any space,” the husband says of the open flow between the living, kitchen and dining areas. “We didn’t do a formal living or dining room, so the space is flexible and super efficient.” Another important point: To avoid the dreaded television over the mantel. So, Abraham tucked a den with a TV behind the fireplace and enclosed it with glassand-steel doors that keep the home’s expansive feeling while providing a space that can be closed off when needed. This allowed the fireplace to become a bold focal point. “The homeowners

wanted something edgy and nontraditional for the fireplace,” Megan explains, so Mark installed an eye-catching patinated steel surround. The facing kitchen needed to be equally stunning. To that end, cabinets were coated in forest green paint with brass detailing. The deep color propels a dramatic backsplash and hood onto center stage. “I was initially thinking marble,” Megan says. “But when we found this porcelain slab, we knew that it was perfect.” The thin but tough material wraps around the hood without bulk and provides a near impervious surface for the island’s 10-foot, seam-free countertop. And, with the addition of the adjacent prep kitchen, the front kitchen—visible from almost the entire first floor—stays immaculate even when a multicourse meal is being served up. “Everyone comments on the kitchen,” the wife notes. Also on the homeowners’ must-have list were his-and-hers work spaces. The husband is a writer and brand consultant with a downtown office, but like many, has mostly worked remotely over the past two years. He took the loft-like space over the garage and chose most of the decor. “I gravitate to midcentury modern, so my office echoes the look of the main house, but we joke that it’s a little more dorm room,” he laughs. “During the pandemic, it became our daughter’s actual dorm room when she couldn’t go back to school for six months.” While the dwelling has only two designated bedrooms, that idea of flexible and maximized space means that when all three of their children are home, they have areas for everyone to sleep, work and study. One room that’s not meant to be flexible is the wife’s office. As an executive coach who has always worked from home, she wanted a dedicated space with a fresh feel. “I wanted a clean look—no file cabinets, no printer—but still slightly feminine,” she says. “We did built-ins under the windows and it was Megan’s idea to paint the woodwork and walls the same color, which gives the room a soothing, clean aesthetic.” In the end, the abode is exactly what the couple wanted. They now have that much-desired California home—just conveniently located in Clarendon Hills.

Just opposite the front entry of this Clarendon Hills abode created by architect Michael Abraham, designer Megan Hickman and builder Mark Hickman is a coat closet with a concealed door covered by white oak slat paneling. “The family was moving from a larger house,” says Megan. “They were worried about not having enough storage, but we packed in lots and lots of it.”

Above: Behind the custom steel-and-glass doors is a small den for television viewing, which lets the main living area of the house be TV free. Near the fireplace, blue chairs by Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams add a sophisticated and interesting color to the largely neutral palette. In the den, artwork by Patti Roberts-Pizzuto hangs above a leather chair from Crate & Barrel. Opposite: When the homeowners first saw these RH light fixtures, they knew they wanted them for the dining room. Megan helped them decide on the statement-making size. Artwork by Anke Schofield and a console with brushed-brass mesh detailing draw the eye toward the end of the room.

Opposite: Adjacent to the kitchen is a prep and pantry area where custom cabinetry by P&B Woodworking offers plentiful additional storage. The space also holds a beverage station, dishwasher and additional ovens. “It was important to have the prep kitchen to hide the mess,” says the wife. “With an open floor plan, the main kitchen is front and center.”

The custom staircase by Pinnacle Stairs contributes to the open and airy feel of the home. “It was key to turn the footprint of the stairs into a showpiece and incorporate them into the flow of the house,” Megan says. Opposite: The wife has always worked from home, so her office was an important space that she wanted to be feminine but practical. The Jaipur Living rug and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams guest chair set the palette, while built-ins and walls painted with Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter provide a calming backdrop.

WIDE BLUE YONDER In Evanston, an artist mines the surrounding environment to create inventive monoprints and cyanotypes. W R I T T E N BY M O N I Q U E M C I N T O S H P H O T O G R A P H Y BY P E T R A F O R D

he world must seem a little more wondrous through the eyes of printmaker Beth Herman Adler. It’s a natural side effect of creating her expressive monoprints and cyanotypes, where any object, however mundane, can be used to make something beautiful: think plant clippings, netting and even ordinary tools. Alongside more conventional equipment like her beloved printing press, her charming storefront studio in Evanston is filled with these little discoveries, which she uses to impart unusual patterns into her unique prints. “Shape is really something I look at in everything,” says Adler. “The beauty is there.” Adler honed an acute sense of shape and color for years while working as a graphic designer for institutions like the Field Museum and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The experience only deepened her fascination with these elements when she transitioned to her full-time art practice. The move “brought me back to what I originally was drawn to in graphic design: the hands-on making of images,” she explains. Her latest series focuses on cyanotypes, a light-sensitive printing technique similar to that used to make blueprints. When exposed to UV rays, the chemically treated paper turns a vivid Prussian blue. Adler was drawn to the process during an artist residency where she spent every day swimming in Lake Michigan. “Swimming really put me in touch with these watery compositions,” she muses. And then there were the logistics to consider. “I had no press in the residency,” she says. “So, I decided to use the sun.” To make her cyanotypes, she lays out various objects onto treated handmade paper. For example, in her “Tools of the Trade” series, she gathers instruments of different professions to form sharp, graphic silhouettes. In contrast, her pieces highlighting local plant life feel like dreamy waterscapes, an effect she creates with a mix of oddities, including vinegar, soap bubbles, Saran Wrap and salt. She then places these pieces outside to process, taking advantage of the precious Illinois sunlight. Working with the elements often proves unpredictable, but Adler fully embraces the mercurial process, noting, “In many ways, it’s my dialogue with the sun.” This speaks to her greater conversation with nature, and as seasons change, likely so will her work. She may move on to different techniques and materials, yet there’s nothing more satisfying for the artist. “I’m endlessly curious,” says Adler. “And there’s so much to still explore.”

Printmaker Beth Herman Adler’s first foray into her craft began with monotypes (left, opposite and below, left). Her more recent work focuses on cyanotypes (below, right), which is a 170-year-old photographic print process.

Interior Design: Amy Kartheiser, Amy Kartheiser Design

successful interior design project doesn’t always mean a complete structural overhaul. Sometimes simply accentuating a home’s existing charms is infinitely more impactful. Art and Maura Oliver’s grand abode on a secluded road on the North Shore already had plenty such charms: beautiful millwork, elegant fireplaces, coffered ceilings and generous windows that welcomed ample sunlight. “It was the loveliest home, and it really just needed some updating and tweaking,” designer Amy Kartheiser says. Of course, it also needed to accommodate the fact that three boys—aged 15, 12 and 6—were in residence. “We definitely wanted something that we would love to entertain in, but that was livable for our family,” Art says. “There’s no sense in having a family couch that we don’t really want anybody to ever sit on. We wanted it so that we would be happy to have guests over for cocktails, but also at the same time feel like the kids could hang out in the family room on a Saturday morning.” That didn’t mean sacrificing elegance, but it did mean a lot of high-performance fabrics. In an unusual situation, the previous owners had left behind most of their furniture. The couple liked certain pieces but found them too heavy and dark, so Kartheiser revamped the coverings to be more in line with the dwelling’s updated aesthetic. She points to the dining room table and chairs as a prime example. “It could’ve been a dark moment,” she says. “But they weren’t afraid to brighten up the space with green velvet on the chairs, greenand-blue wallpaper and a colorful piece of art.” It’s those small but impactful interventions that Kartheiser made throughout that really make the architecture sing. The bones of the house were strong, so she used color and texture—as well as a few fresh coats of white paint to replace the original beige—to accentuate the structure’s existing attributes. A geometric grass-cloth wallcovering in the sun room complements the coffered ceiling and verdant outdoor views, while in the family room, a vivid, textured blue adorns the walls. “Art isn’t much of a pattern person, but he was not afraid of this texture,” Kartheiser says.

224

LUXESOURCE.COM

“I love when you get a textured wallpaper like a grass cloth that—especially with darker colors— fits the seaming because that brings in a lot of dimension to the walls.” The designer also brought in pops of color elsewhere through pillows and other soft furnishings, as well as a selection of artwork from Chicago-based artists. “I love to source local pieces when I can because Chicago has some of the most premier, interesting and dynamic artists,” she says. The family room features works by Linc Thelen and Dana De Ano, in the living room are pieces from Lake Forest ceramist Kass O’Brien, a painting from Chicago artist Lynn Basa hangs in the sun room and, in the powder room, a piece from local painter Sheila Arora adorns a wall. As she does with most of her projects, Kartheiser added in some personal touches using objects sourced from her travels. Among her favorites are black-and-white patterned boxes and a tray from India, as well as a voluptuous vase she picked up in France. While structural changes weren’t necessary throughout most of the home, one room needed a heavier-handed remodel: the kitchen. “We wanted to have the kitchen be practical and contemporary knowing that it was going to be Grand Central Station, so to speak,” Art explains. That meant bringing in a large island that the family could gather around, redoing the perimeter cabinetry and flooring, and adding in a steam oven and custom range hood, which Kartheiser describes as “a piece of jewelry for the kitchen.” She also positioned the refrigerator and freezer as builtins on one wall, adding in custom refrigerator drawers alongside cabinets and appliance garages to make the kitchen more user-friendly and visually harmonious. Funnily enough, Art reveals, the project started out with just the kitchen remodel. “But then you see how good something turns out and you say, ‘Well, we have to do all the living spaces now,’ ” he laughs. And Kartheiser gave them exactly what the family wanted: balance. “What I like most about it is the ease when we’re having people over for dinner,” Art notes. “The transition from the kitchen to the living room for cocktails and then into the dining room makes it a great place to entertain.”

Designer Amy Kartheiser made sure that first impressions count in this Winnetka home’s entryway, where she replaced the original ceramic tile with marble tile from The Fine Line and added touches of brass. The curves of the Bunny Williams Home hourglass table and Theodore Alexander ottoman complement the shape of the staircase.

The clients’ goal for the living room was for it to be light and airy—a place where they could both entertain guests and relax and read. The Kravet sofa and Theodore Alexander chairs are a soothing match to the Benjamin Moore Simply White paint and Stark rug. Kartheiser accessorized the built-in bookshelves with finds from her travels and pieces from local artists. Above the fireplace is artwork by Amy Donaldson.

Above: Much of the furniture in the sun room was also left behind by the previous owners. “Our goal was to reupholster the existing pieces and brighten up the whole space to make it more relaxing,” says Kartheiser. She added in a handspun wool rug from Rouzati Rugs, a Phillip Jeffries grass-cloth wallcovering and a Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams sofa. In 2018, one of the new company’s first projects was a bar and lounge in a private club on Michigan Avenue located just down the street from the studio’s office. “The direction we received was to design a destination on par with this Chicago landmark—a dream commission for us,” says Joan Craig, the firm’s founder. This award-winning project paved the way to more club, hotel, restaurant and residential design work for the Chicago and New York-based company. At the start of every project, Denys extracts as much information as possible from her clients by asking questions like, “How involved do they want to be in the process? What specific needs should we address and accommodate?” She loves when clients bring her visuals and even accompany her on trips to local showrooms, which she says, “always help get the juices flowing.” While Denys lives in Chicago and is from Buffalo, New York, she says it’s on her bucket list to one day design a coastal vacation home. “I really love the beach and sun and warmth,” she says.

Coming from a background working for major museum donors and world-renowned art collectors, Lovell bridges the gap between makers and homeowners who are interested in showcasing art. “We frequently share collaborations and artist commissions that push the boundaries of their work, resulting in an inspired dialogue that creates truly unique results for the client,” she says. While incorporating art is important, so is starting with a well-articulated interior architectural palette. “We source architectural materials and finishes from around the world to create a sophisticated platform upon which to present a carefully considered collection of antiques, design furniture and fine art,” Lovell says. by exploring her client’s preferences. “We want to know everything about their family and how they do life,” Storm says. “We observe what style of clothing they wear, how they communicate.” Storm’s penchant for luxurious details and attention to livability has become what she calls the “secret sauce” of her success.

What do you feel has been your greatest success? Building trust with our roster of contractors. My mission with every project is to make the experience as enjoyable and fun as possible for the homeowner by being the first stop for contractor questions (before the homeowner) to help eliminate potential issues, stress or confusion. What part has the digital age played in your firm’s success? We were late in the Instagram game but can attribute a significant amount of our increased exposure to this platform and the highly active and supportive, design-enthusiast community. What is the next move for your firm? Growing our team, growing our e-commerce business and developing exclusive product lines you can only get at Amy Storm & Company.

n expansion to a second office (the first in Chicago and the new one in Colorado); the distinction of being named one of Chicago’s Coolest Offices by Crain’s Chicago Business; Luxe Interiors + Design Gold List status in 2019, 2020 and 2022; 10 ASID Design Excellence Awards; inclusion in The Definitive Guide to the World’s Top 100 Designers by Andrew Martin Interior Design Review … all this in the past few years proves that Donna Mondi Interior Design is on a roll. In fact, that may be an understatement. Asked to describe the look that has clearly captivated the minds of many, Donna Mondi points to a few elements. “My sweet spot lies

somewhere between classicism and modernity, with unexpected edginess,” she says. “I adore historical architecture and vintage buildings as much as I love modern steel and glass … we do everything in between!” Of course, where they land on the spectrum is informed by the client’s wants, needs and preferences. But no matter the aesthetic mandate, Mondi and team are known for incorporating surprising design moments and creating cohesive spatial connections. They also adhere to one overarching belief: “Staying ahead of trends, being aware of history and recognizing passing fads are the keys to delivering interiors that will stand the test of time.”

ASK THE EXPERT What type of project would you love to take on? I feel like we have dream projects happening right now! That said, I always have my sights set on the future. Wouldn’t it be fun to design a funky Palm Beach estate or a Renaissance Revival apartment on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. What’s next for your firm? We are about to launch a collection with renowned stone purveyor Materials Marketing. It will have avant-garde fireplaces, indoor-outdoor furniture and sculptural accessories, all carved from marble or limestone and inspired by Chicago architecture, Art Deco details and some 1980s retro vibes. It will be released early in 2022, and I could not be more excited!

legant spaces designed with classic color palettes and custom pieces are the bread and butter of Ilene Chase’s signature style. For 28 years, the owner and lead designer of Ilene Chase Design has built a portfolio of high-end residential interiors that are nothing short of timeless. “I bring my clients to the forefront of the process for some insight into their style, and then I run with it,” says the designer, who beautifies new homes built from the ground up as well as remodeled, historic homes throughout the greater Chicago area. Alongside her ironclad team of four women, Chase starts every project with total transparency, creating presentation boards and realistic renderings for her clients so they can understand the creative vision and overall project scope. “My creative process is very thoughtful and successful,” she says. Not only does ICD design classic homes its clients can love for years to come, but the firm has also begun expanding its expertise to the

t SemelSnow Interior Design, the best projects are the ones with a demand for the bespoke. While known for their approach of looking to form, scale and proportion, as well as for a use of antiques and paying careful attention to positive and negative space, principal Brian Snow and his team are most beloved for the ways their process differs from home to home. For them, it’s all about masterfully executing the client’s vision. “From the beginning, we want to see the client’s aspirational photos,” Brian says. “Usually, they’ve been saving these for years, and it’s great fun to review them together and understand what drew them to each image.” Once they nail down the first concepts, everyone involved meets to explore space planning and furniture layouts. “Sometimes, we’ll also take the client to a new dealer, exposing them to products and ideas they might not have known to ask for.” The results of such a customized approach are, of course, varied. “I think our work has spanned most styles,”

ARLENE SEMEL AND BRIAN SNOW, PRINCIPALS semelsnow.com 312.640.0000 semelsnowinteriordesign Brian says. “We’ve done modern, contemporary and traditional. We’ve even created what our client initially described to us as a ‘Swedish beach house.’” As for where these tailored homes are sited, that too is a mixed bag, with projects ranging from Chicago to Florida, Colorado, California, New York and more.

How can clients work with trade professionals to ensure a painless design process? Clients should know that honesty is very important to our working relationship and will directly affect the outcome of their project. Saying no is just as important to the process as saying yes. I also think that clients who want to be educated are the best clients to have. What part has the digital age played in the success of your firm? The way we source items from around the world without even having to leave the comfort of our homes or offices, the way we can communicate remotely with team members and clients—technology is always evolving our industry. What project would you love to take on? I would love to do a yacht or a château in the South of France!

hird Coast Interiors is known for its ability to tell a story in any space, any style. “We believe that great design brings out the best in the client’s tastes, and we work with them to present that through lines, proportion, scale, palette and more,” says founder Guinevere Johnson. In the pursuit of achieving this, she and her team lean on an eclectic array of muses. “Commonalities in our designs include detailed millwork, a call to mix pieces of different eras, understated elegance, patinated glamour and historical accuracy,” she says. The principal designer also finds influence in her own storied past. Although she was born in Chicago and now lives there once more, Johnson grew up in Vermont and New York City, spent time in The Berkshires in Massachusetts and lived in Mexico City for awhile. Still, the ultimate inspiration is the individuality of the client. “We aim to bring highly personalized spaces to life. ”Since she founded

GUINEVERE JOHNSON, PRINCIPAL thirdcoastinteriors.net 312.813.9558 _thirdcoastinteriors_ Third Coast Interiors in 2017, Johnson has done just that, creating gorgeous homes throughout the United States and Mexico. In many cases, they have been restorations of historically significant places, a specialty the firm calls “architectural intervention.”

What project put your company on the map? A historic registered 1897 home by Harvey L. Page that we restored for Natasha Trethewey and Brett Gadsden. We renovated it from the studs up alongside Liska Architects, and it was published in Luxe Interiors + Design in 2021. It was a wonderful collaborative process and indicative of the type of site-specific, personal and historically minded work we like to do. What’s next for the firm? In 2021, we continued to work on projects throughout the East Coast and Mexico City. We are excited to see those come to fruition. In 2022, we will continue to explore new opportunities in those regions as well as better serve our Midwest clientele.
