Color Meets COLLABORATION

THE POWER OF PAINT IS UNIVERS ALLY ACKNOWLEDGED BY EXPERTS AS THE FINAL FINISH. IT POSSESSES THE ABILITY TO DEFINE STYLE, CREATE AMBIENCE AND ENHANCE ANY ENVIRONMENT BOTH AESTHETICALLY AND ARCHITECTURALLY. PAINT’S TRANSFORMATIVE QUALITY IS THAT IT BRINGS A ROOM TO LIFE.

Before paint can have this impact, though, it must be carefully selected and applied. To many, this is a true art form and, to some, a daunting task. Enter, 21 interior designers and painters who have mastered finding the perfect hue and showcasing exquisite craftsmanship while embracing the power of teamwork. After all, the relationship between an interior designer and a painter holds a special significance in the world of design.

The designer’s chosen colors, textures and finishes are implemented by the skilled hands of their painter. Combined, these talents for telling the story of a space through paint beget beautiful projects. In partnership with Benjamin Moore, meet these Faces of Design— Class of 2023—as they showcase the perspectives and qualities that have shaped their trailblazing careers, one brushstroke at a time.

MARIE CLOUD + JOHN PARKER

Every professional in the design field possesses a guiding philosophy or two. In the case of designer Marie Cloud and paint contractor John Parker, one such overarching ethos serves as bonding glue: client is king. “All of my homes are unique,” Marie shares. “I’ll never repeat myself, because each space is true to the homeowner’s heart, soul and personal story.” Likewise, John chimes in, “We are committed to transforming living environments to reflect the homeowner’s unique personality.” Paint, of course, is central to their methods in doing so. Marie enthuses on its role in design: “Paint is like language. It can transform interior and exterior environments, changing the overall ambience and mood. Lighter shades, such as beige and cream, create an airy, open feel, while darker shades, like navy blue or emerald green, lend a cozy and intimate atmosphere. It can also help to disguise imperfections and enhance architectural features, such as crown molding and baseboards. Paint is like magic.” Especially when it is applied with skill. As John puts it, “Top-notch workmanship ensures a beautiful result.”

MICHELE PLACHTER + JAMES CERVONE

Describe the impact paint has on your projects. Michele: Color is the cornerstone of all great design, whether we’re using it to bring the outdoors inside, to create a cozy man cave with dark and moody tones or to add a soft touch to a bedroom with a gentle palette. We love to play with unexpected color and finish choices as well. When we have clients who are open to it, we get experimental!

How did you come to work together? Michele: James and I were introduced by our mutual contractor. The painter I used for 20 years had retired, so I was looking for another talented painter. Mission accomplished!

What are some of your go-to paint products?

James: For walls, I would say the Aura Matte is above all other products I’ve used, and for trim, the Advance Satin product is definitely our favorite!

MATT DONAHOE + ERWIN HERCEG

For many trade partners, the working relationship begins with a personal passion project. This was the case for Matt Donahoe and Erwin Herceg. About 12 years ago, Matt and his husband hired Erwin to assist with a renovation in their own home. The scope was daunting, but Erwin’s work was masterfully executed. “We have collaborated together ever since,” Matt says. “When we show up on a jobsite together, the contractors sweat.” Why? Because the duo has a fervor for outstanding quality. The results usually feature Benjamin Moore product. “I like Scuff-X for high-traffic areas and Aura Bath & Spa when moisture is a factor,” Erwin shares.

“Also, I always use Benjamin Moore ceiling paint.” bureauinteriordesign.com, @erwinherceg

KATI CURTIS + JOSE OCEGUERA

Often, the reason two colleagues become long-term partners comes down to one simple factor: they just “get” each other. Take it from designer Kati Curtis, who has been working with painting contractor Jose Oceguera for years. “Jose has an intuitive understanding of my design preferences and requirements, which means I don’t need to provide excessive direction,” she says. Together, they thrive on great feats of design and execution, including one project where color changes were desired at the last minute. “Within a week, we transformed the home and the furnishings were protected throughout,” Jose shares. “We take pride in our work and strive for excellence, ensuring that everything is done right the first time.” As for the paint-related advice they share with homeowners, Kati points to the challenge of selection. “I strongly caution against relying on paint chips alone, because even larger squares can be misleading—the eye tends to perceive colors as darker against a white background. We love Benjamin Moore’s online tool, where you can upload a photo of the room and see any color applied to it.” katicurtisdesign.com, Jose Oceguera: 914-760-4435

JAN SHOWERS + LOUIS GLORIA

How did you come to work together? Jan: I saw the quality of craftsmanship Louis possessed and was so impressed. The work he did on our room at the first Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas was masterful, and we received more comments about it than anything else. We have been collaborating for the five years since!

Why is the connection between designer and painting contractor key to a project’s success? Louis: When these two parties communicate well and have a “feel” for each other’s skills and talents, the result will fit the homeowner’s desires, personality and character like a glove. Also, being able to troubleshoot through the confusion of any unexpected issue is something that is strengthened with years of experience working together.

Share a pro tip for choosing the right paint color. Jan: In rooms with low ceilings, I like to paint the ceilings, moldings and walls all the same color. It causes the room to look larger and taller.

O. STEPHANIE BEVERLY + JESSICA GALLOWAY

Why is the connection between designer and painting contractor key to a project’s success? Stephanie: I think of the designer-painter relationship much like a musician and the conductor. Both are essential to a beautiful and cohesive sound—and space, in the context of design.

What are some of your go-to paint products?

Jessica: Benjamin Moore’s Scuff-X is the bee’s knees! The leveling capability of this product is superb. The satin finish is true satin and doesn’t lose sheen with spray application. Newer to my toolbox is Command. We refinish staircases often, and for stair treads, I stand by this product.

Which colors inspire you the most? Stephanie: Hands down, the most inspirational colors are deep, moody ones that evoke a feeling like a loving embrace or a nod to creativity: blacks, deep blues, purples, deep oranges and deep, golden yellows.

PETI LAU + JOHN FASANO

The order of the day may be paint, but Peti Lau and John Fasano first met due to the installation of wallpaper. After collaborating to install it for a Housing Works Design on a Dime charity event in 2016, the duo began a partnership that would culminate in countless perfected paint jobs. As Peti says, “It takes two to tango!” Asked to share their old-faithful approaches to the process, one talks color and the other formula. “I tend to go with saturated hues of blues, dark greens, teals and wine colors when I want drama,” Peti says. “When neutrals are the call, I like warm tones like taupes, greiges and sage colors.” John chimes in, “The specific features of Aura give the premium application we’re seeking, but my favorite combo is White Dove OC-17 in Advance Satin. It holds color and gives a durable, high-end finish.” With Peti’s design eye and John’s technical expertise and unparalleled prep work, they make an ideal team for each perceptive client. “I love that I get to help transform lives by giving my clients the ability to create their unique home,” Peti says. “That begins, of course, with paint.” petilau.com, @jsnpainting

SARAH VAILE + JIM BERARDI AND MIKE FOLEY

When a designer has a reputation for color, it’s a safe bet they’ll have a close relationship with a painting pro. Case in point: Sarah Vaile, Jim Berardi and Mike Foley (center). She’s known for her use of bold hues, and they are the application pros who make it happen. “Paint is the most underestimated challenge of interior design,” Sarah shares. “It is the canvas.” Jim and Mike play to its importance, with a knack for selecting the ideal formula and sheen, and then executing it to perfection—and to the client’s delight. “We collectively seek discerning clients who can appreciate the impact of fine prep and nice brushwork,” Mike says. “There are many factors we consider along the way, from a family’s lifestyle to window exposure and beyond.” sarahvaile.com, divincipainters.com

JAMIE DECK + FERENCE SCHOLD

When one holds to the “less is more” philosophy, there is a certain demand on the foundation of a space: there must be incomparable quality. As a designer known for her minimalist, Japanese and Nordic-inspired spaces, Jamie Deck would know. For her, the clean slate of simplicity begins with paint— and expert Ference Schold. “In this artistic collaboration, both the interior designer and the painting contractor play integral roles, each contributing their unique skills and expertise to the vision,” Jamie says. “Ference meticulously prepares surfaces, addressing imperfections.” Being that Jamie and her clients gravitate toward crisp, tranquil whites and creams, a smooth application is a necessity. The secret, Ference emphasizes, lies in formulation. “Paint products that offer ease of application without splattering or sagging are imperative to that flawless finish,” he says. “I prioritize those that have good viscosity control, reducing the likelihood of drips or visible brush and roller marks. This also enhances the efficiency of my process, because it eliminates the need for excessive touch-ups and corrections along the way.” shift-interiors.com, fandmscholdpainting.com

WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA

KRISTINE PAIGE + KARLO ARELLANO

It establishes the desired mood, creates an emotional background for furnishings and art, integrates the interiors with the surrounding landscape, highlights the details of woodwork—paint, as Kristine Paige tells it, plays a critical role in any design she creates. Perhaps it is little wonder that she and accomplished paint pro Karlo Arellano have formed a lasting partnership. “Kristine is the orchestrator using her skill set to wave progress along,” Karlo says. “But we know that a paint job can make or break that project, so we live by the phrase, ‘It’s not how you start, but how you finish,’ and bring the best product and application technique for each client.”

Advice FROM THE Experts

“I always use Benjamin Moore Waterborne ceiling paint. It’s so flat that any light in the room makes the ceiling glow. For potential imperfections, it is the best high-tide secret weapon you can find.”

“ When I present a blind test set of samples for clients, 90 percent of the time Aura is chosen. It offers a rich vibrancy that is second to none.”

“Scuff-X is a first-of-its-kind commercial product with superior scuff-resistance. It’s amazing for high-traffic areas, water-born and low-VOC— uncommon for high-performance paint.”
-MIKE FOLEY
“I love Benjamin Moore’s Advance Satin. I think it’s the best paint on the market.”
-JOHN FASANO
“I love Classic Burgundy HC-182 for its luxurious and indulgent essence. It is the velvet of colors; I can feel it.”
-MARIE CLOUD
“No accent walls, please! Going tonal on ceilings i s fine and good, but avoid the accent walls of yesteryear!”
-MICHELE PLACHTER
Satin gives you the feel of a classic, timeless oil finish without the disadvantage of rapid yellowing.”

DESIGN STORIES

… with House of Rohl

THREE DESIGNERS | ONE PORTFOLIO | ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES

HOUSEOFROHL.COM

houseofrohl

House of Rohl® is a portfolio of luxury decorative plumbing brands curated from around the world, allowing you to tell your own story of a life well crafted: Riobel®, Perrin & Rowe®, Shaws®, ROHL® and Victoria + Albert®. Each brand has a unique story that connects craft, place of origin and specialized techniques that deliver timeless design. Together they bring a richness of heritage, innovation and endless design opportunities to your kitchen and bath.

For inspiration, House of Rohl partnered with three nationally-recognized designers, each curating their own vision of whole-home design using their favorite brands from its portfolio. On the following pages, their modern, traditional and transitional interpretations come to life, capturing the richness of heritage, craftsmanship and timelessness that is House of Rohl.

ALL THINGS MODERN

In a world filled with digital noise, designer Amhad Freeman, of Amhad Freeman Interiors, creates serene sanctuaries of calm, clean-lined design that soothe and inspire the senses. Freeman’s compelling spaces elevate every design story with the use of natural materials, pared-back details and quiet color palettes. It’s no surprise that the award-winning designer was drawn to House of Rohl early on, taken with its level of craftsmanship and detail. Since then, its portfolio of brands has become a mainstay in the Black-led firm’s projects, bringing an elegant, stylistic

blend to every design. Dreamy minimalism defines Freeman’s approach, captured here in the modern version of his vision board. Looking to create an environment outfitted for urban living, Freeman went to work mixing materials and similar shapes throughout. “My goal was to find plumbing that was modern, simple and cohesive,” he says. Riobel’s Bistro Kitchen Faucet launched his scheme, which includes a painted Victoria + Albert tub in Signal Black Matte, ROHL’s Eclissi Faucet and Perrin & Rowe sinks for their craftsmanship.

• Recent trends impacting K+B design: To be honest, there are no trends for my designs. I allow each space to speak to me and that dictates the design.

KEEPING WITH TRADITION

Named one of the “Top 100 Interior Designers in the World” with 13 ASID Design Excellence Awards, interior and product designer Donna Mondi, of Donna Mondi Interior Design, has seen and done. Introduced to House of Rohl early on, Mondi was tasked with selecting plumbing for a custom home builder she worked with in an affluent Chicago suburb. “House of Rohl always had a great selection and beautiful finishes, and their faucets felt so good,” Mondi says. “I am big on how elements feel on a daily basis.” Here, Mondi took a traditional approach

to her whole-home concept, envisioning spaces with classical elements, but with a twist. Starting in the kitchen, she chose Perrin & Rowe’s Bridge Faucet and a chef’s sink with all the bells and whistles, then moved to the primary bathroom, where a Victoria + Albert Freestanding Bathtub in Signal Black Matte creates drama. “Powder rooms might be my favorite spaces to design, so I couldn’t pass that up, and a sexy bar lounge resonates with my firm’s provocative style,” she adds. “And I rounded it out with a chic and highly-functional laundry room.”

• What provided the jumpingoff point for your design? The Holborn from Perrin & Rowe and Graceline from ROHL are my favorites! Traditional, but with modern simplicity.

• Three words that best describe the look you were going for: Classic. Timeless. Luxurious.

• Favorite House of Rohl products: I’m a sucker for the Perrin & Rowe Holborn and Armstrong versions of the Bridge Faucet for the kitchen, and Victoria + Albert’s Amiata Tub with ROHL’s Graceline Tub Filler in the bathroom.

• K+B design musts: Function first! Every kitchen should have a beautiful faucet with a side sprayer and air switch. I love a large, generous sink and pot fillers too.

TIME FOR TRANSITIONAL

Interior, furniture and soon-to-be textile designer Joy Williams, of Joyful Designs Studio, is always intentional with her approach, seeking to enhance clients’ homes and lives with her stylish, textured and visuallyimpactful spaces. The design influencer and expert discovered House of Rohl at Chicago’s The Mart years back and, in her words, “completely fell in love with the beauty and craftsmanship of the brands under its house of design.” For her transitional take on this design, Williams brought to mind spaces she would design for her own family; how she would want

her kitchen and baths to function and look aesthetically. “I considered the type of craftsmanship that draws me in from materiality to finishes, she says. “The goal was to achieve a level of artful joy.” For the bathrooms, she pulled from Shaws, Victoria + Albert, Riobel and Perrin & Rowe, which provided a complementary mix, and for the kitchen, she went all in on ROHL. “I love the look of chrome and mixing metals,” she says. Williams continued the chrome theme in the bath, punctuating the look with a deep, soulful violet-purple, freestanding soaking tub.

OPAME COLLECTIVE

While working together on his house, the collaboration between homeowner Sid Parakh and interior designer Elizabeth Krueger went so well that a business was born: Opame Collective. The West Loop gallery offers furniture and objects designed by Krueger and Parakh under the Opame moniker, as

well as ceramics and art by emerging artists that the partners have found and loved. “We were working on Sid’s last house together, and he asked me if I would ever be interested in a business,” Krueger says. “I’d been approached before, but this time just felt right.” Neither Parakh, who is a corporate executive, nor Krueger had previous retail experience, but after going through the process of working with makers to craft pieces for Parakh’s house as well as sourcing art for his growing collection, they felt ready to bring their aesthetic forward. “We’re looking at artists who have unique and soulful voices, where their work reveals a piece of themselves,” Parakh says. “Everything is, of course, very beautiful, but we also want pieces that evoke emotion.” This fall, the gallery will unveil new items in the Opame Collective line with pop-ups and other special events to celebrate their artists and collaborations. opamecollective.com

CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE BIENNIAL

After 2021’s virtual exhibitions and programs, the in-person and full tilt Chicago Architecture Biennial is back beginning September 21. Curated by Chicago-based Floating Museum, “CAB 5: This is a Rehearsal” will offer more than 100 activations and exhibitions that focus on how architecture relates to and improves urban life. “The programming will be expansive because Chicago is expansive,” says artist Faheem Majeed, one of the founders of Floating Museum. “There’s a lot of movement and lots to see, but we want to be sure everyone has a door to enter in.” To that end, programming and performances by over 70 creatives will take place at the Chicago Cultural Center as well as in locations across the city and with the involvement of local organizations like the South Side Community Art Center and Urban Growers Collective. chicagoarchitecturebiennial.org

MEET THE MAKER

HEATHER HANCOCK

Heather Hancock is most emphatically not a stained-glass artist, but she is an artist who works with glass. Her pieces range from large commissions designed for public spaces to smaller works sought by private collectors. Here, the artist chats about her inspiration and why glimmering glass never ceases to excite her. heatherhancock.com

How did you come to work with glass? It was an epiphany. I saw mosaics in Italy and Spain and realized those floors were 800 years old. The longevity of the material was my starting point, but aesthetically I didn’t want to do anything like those mosaics. I wanted something contemporary, and I felt like glass had so much potential.

But it’s not stained glass? Honestly, I don’t care for stained glass, and I have a specific reason for that: I’m passionate about light and its reflectance. Stained glass blocks light, so it doesn’t appeal to me. I want my work to reflect light.

You seem to be inspired by both city and country. That is true! I would say my work is half nature and half strong, clean lines—I create natural imagery with a very graphic approach.

BEHIND THE BLOOM EXFOLIA BOTANICAL

With a natural approach to floral design, Cassandra Stadnicki, who owns Exfolia Botanical in Logan Square, has created a thriving business in a very short time.

“I always imagined owning a small business, I just didn’t know what it would be,” Stadnicki says. “When I got involved in floral, it just all made sense.” In her finished bouquets, a mix of collected elements—some from Stadnicki’s own garden—plus greens and blooms from local farmers and a few well-chosen botanicals from the flower market create a seasonal, organic aesthetic. “I have an intuitive approach to design. When I’m collecting materials, I pay attention to what’s calling to me,” she says. “I ask myself ‘What is it going to be about?’ Is it a vivid color, unique shape or a pattern? Then I build around that and let the natural beauty of the materials inform the design.” exfoliabotanical.online

TRANSFORMATION

THE MART

The Mart’s latest transformation reenergizes the massive icon for an era of worklife flexibility. “People work everywhere—in an office, remote, hybrid—so work spaces need to be more fluid,” says Toni McIntosh, a vice president at Vornado, which owns The Mart. “This next evolution of The Mart centralizes tenant amenities on the second floor and provides a whole ecosystem of working areas.” Those amenities, which were designed by architecture firm Gensler, include a 23,000-square-foot health club as well as flexible conference and meeting rooms. Gensler also oversaw the redesign of the South Lobby, giving the Art Deco space new seating areas with furnishings from tenant showrooms. Landscape architecture firm Hoerr Schaudt revitalized The Mart’s River Park complete with places to sit and regionally focused landscaping. themart.com

ON VIEW

Chicago and Puerto Rico have deeply intertwined roots of migration and social justice movements, and a new exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago reflects how artists have interpreted this commingled history. “Chicago is home to one of the largest Puerto Rican populations in the United States,” says Marilyn and Larry Fields Curator Carla Acevedo-Yates. “ ‘Entre Horizontes: Art and Activism Between Chicago and Puerto Rico’ features Puerto Rican artists with close ties to the city, while recognizing Chicago as an important center for Puerto Rican activism and self-determination.” The exhibition, which is presented in both English and Spanish, not only examines the rise of anti-colonialism and its influence on artists in Chicago but also uses the common horizon line— Chicago’s over Lake Michigan and Puerto Rico’s over the Caribbean—as a point of connection. mcachicago.org

HIGH LIFE

CHICAGO’S REAL ESTATE SCENE CONTINUES ITS LEAN INTO LUXURY WITH THREE FRESH OFFERINGS.

BELDEN-STRATFORD

With an extensive renovation of its more than 200 apartments and the addition of lifestyle amenities, the 100-year-old Belden-Stratford is well positioned for its next century.

“In many cases, our work involved undoing changes made as part of previous renovations,” says Ted Fahey, vice president of real estate for Mansueto Office, which owns the Lincoln Park property. “It was especially rewarding to bring those elements back into the light.” Changes included reopening the mezzanine level and adding a fitness center in the original ballroom. beldenstratford.com

THE REED AT SOUTHBANK

Designed by Perkins&Will with floorto-ceiling windows and an industrialmodern aesthetic, The Reed at Southbank opened this summer in the South Loop to welcome residents to its 224 apartments. Highlights include a 2-acre park along the Chicago River as well as an eighth-floor amenity deck with a pool and entertaining areas.

“The double-height lobby is a focal point of the design,” says Lendlease’s Jon Cordell. “It features a hospitality-inspired bar, fireplace and a variety of seating configurations that establish the space as a place to gather rather than simply pass through.” thereedsouthbank.com

THE ROW FULTON MARKET

Morris Adjmi Architects designed The Row Fulton Market with architectural details that mirror the neighborhood’s industrial past. “The Row’s dark metal façade, articulated with steel beams and curved aluminum brackets, is the project’s defining feature,” says Morris Adjmi, firm founder and principal. “The design evokes an interplay of light throughout the day, revealing surprising depth and detail. It’s a dramatic and shifting balance of light and shadow, strength and elegance.” The interior of the 300unit building continues the moody theme with rich textures and warm color palettes specified by design firm MAWD. rowfultonmarket.com

Designer Jessie Nelson was studying post-war Eastern European architecture (noting its oppressive, yet fascinating sculptural perspective) when he began working in concrete— the primary material of his Side I table. In his Brooklyn studio, each pour of the industrial building material results in a unique finish with air pockets dotting the furniture’s surface. As functional as it is sculptural, with nods to Art Deco, Brutalism and Japanese wabi-sabi, the table’s walnut wood drawer is lined in a Fortuny fabric and features a secret compartment accessed by a hidden latch. jessienelsonstudio.com

REFERENCE POINT

Brutalist architecture greats like Marcel Breuer and Paul Rudolph were known for using stacked, layered and repeated forms in their building plans, and it is that specific rhythmic effect that Arteriors sought inspiration from when designing the Waylon Chandelier. MISE EN PLACE

Once Studio Heimat met the owners of this Palo Alto, California, Colonial, it was clear that the couple was ready to shake things up and have some fun with their renovation. “They weren’t looking for a big white kitchen,” explains the firm’s co-founder Alicia Cheung. “This is a young family that loves to travel, so we were inspired by European style and incorporated pieces that

feel more like furniture—including the two islands with open toe kicks.”

A new doorway and windows now physically, and visually, connects the kitchen to the adjacent sunroom while providing a natural dividing line between the prep areas for cooking and baking. In fact, one of Studio Heimat’s top priorities for this project was to accommodate the functional needs of the wife, a professional baker. “Everything has a place,” Cheung says. “A double cookie sheet fits perfectly in the refrigerator, and there’s a hidden pantry with a sink where messier baking items can be tucked away.”

As for the materials palette, the design firm and clients settled on a cool mix of white and dark-green metal perimeter cabinets, a natural oak bar area backed with an unexpected botanical wallpaper, dusty-green islands with brass inlay, and a herringbone mosaic backsplash that continues onto the wall between the kitchen and sunroom. Instead of sticking to just one hardware finish, they opted to use black metal and nickel on the perimeter and brass on th e islands and lighting overhead. The result, Cheung says, is “a mix of warm and cold accents that feels interesting.” studioheimat.com

The sunroom serves as a dining area with a banquette upholstered in a Missoni flame-stitch pattern. The adjacent kitchen boasts an oak bar area backed with Jimmy Cricket’s Jungle wallpaper; rolling ladders provide easy access to tall storage.

TREND ALERT: TRADITIONAL CHINA CABINETS ARE GETTING A MODERN KITCHEN REBOOT.

“ This minimalist cabinet features contrasting rustic knotty hickory and matte black paint. The upper metalframe doors don’t have any decorative hardware, relying on a touch-to-open feature, while the lower doors have elegant brushed-brass pulls.”

“Glass cabinets are a beautiful way to add a personal touch in the kitchen. This homeowner requested a modern twist on French style and a place to display her heirloom pieces.”

–CHRISTINA GARCIA LYSAUGHT, layereddimensionsid.com

“I was inspired by bold vintage kitchens from the 1940s and ’50s. The built-in display cabinet makes this kitchen feel less utilitarian and more playful.”

BONUS ROOM

ELIZABETH REYNOLDS INTERIORS

When repeat clients called upon Elizabeth Reynolds to help complete their newly built house in Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina, the designer was presented with a unique challenge: The room adjacent to the main kitchen didn’t yet have a dedicated function, and the family of five needed some guidance on how best to use the space.

How does this room function? This area does everything from serving as a mudroom and laundry room to a working kitchen and bar area. The wife bakes and the husband cooks, so they each have their own zone with the necessary storage.

Sounds like a real workhorse! What is packed in here? There’s storage for entertaining essentials, a dishwasher, sink, wall ovens, wine fridge, glass bar cabinet, shoe cubbies by the door, laundry hidden in the island, and pullout shelves to air-dry items that are concealed by metal-mesh doors.

Tell us about the inspiration behind the color and pattern choices. The clients wanted to have fun with color and create a happy space. A palette inspired by the sky, dark-blue water, and crisp green grass felt so specific to this locale. We chose non-murky, clear hues and customized the floor tiles to match. Both the subway tile and the lighting lend a turn-of-the-20 th -century vibe, and the glass-front bar cabinet breaks up the cabinetry. elizabethreynoldsinteriors.com

“I believe custom cabinetry is the key to achieving a flawless look and ideal functionality in both the kitchen and bathroom,” Foran shares. “Not only does it add much-needed and appreciated storage, but it allows us to personalize those storage solutions, achieve the perfect stain or color palette and anchor all of the other design details with a high level of artistry and craft.”

• In the kitchen: Smart refrigerators with built-in touch screens offer cutting-edge features like recipe suggestions, calendar integration and grocery list management.

When it comes to trends, Schanstra notes, “I’ve seen the residential kitchen go from medium to massive spaces with multiple islands—you may need roller skates to get around!” Although Schanstra’s clients still prefer open designs, sometimes things are “too open.” She explains, “An open kitchen is nice, but when it’s completely exposed to the family room, dining room and all public areas in the house, you need to be mindful about defining spaces both visually and acoustically.”

THE RULE BREAKER

Schanstra’s philosophy is to know the rules in order to break them. She elaborates: “Rules are great at providing guidelines, but as you gain experience and comfort with design you can start to play! For example, it used to be a rule to never put a seam in a countertop where the sink is, as it creates a weak point. But, as technology improved and fabricators became more confident, that issue went away. Now we can showcase exquisite book-matched slabs of stone, transforming them into functional works of art. Innovation is often the result of experienced and mindful rule-breaking.”

COLOR TRENDS

The Drury Design team has been seeing more color requests from clients who are interested in teals, plums and blushes, as well as wood tones and natural greens. Schanstra says, “I think people are rebelling against the cool grays of the past few years.”

SPROVIERI’S CUSTOM COUNTERS

630.543.3400 | sprovieris.com | sprovieriscustomcounters

When determining which countertops are right for a renovation, a homeowner has to decide not only what is visually pleasing to them but how comfortable they are with care and maintenance needs. At Sprovieri’s Custom Counters, a team with more than 60 years and three generations of experience helps clients to undergo this process of choosing the right products for their needs. Sales manager Danielle Sprovieri-Santacaterina advises clients to “make sure a space is not just aesthetically pleasing, but also functional.” She continues: “If you love the look of natural marble countertops, you need to be educated on the care and maintenance of that material and prepare yourself for the first etch mark. Some people love that natural stone can tell a story through wear and tear, others would rather have their countertops always looking perfect. Choose what is the right fit for your lifestyle and vision.”

RENOVATION STRATEGIES

There are quick and easy ways to update your space that won’t break the bank. Danielle says: “Giving cabinets a fresh paint job, switching out hardware and updating light fixtures are the easiest and most budgetfriendly approaches to refresh a kitchen or bath.” And if you have more of a budget to play with, “updating countertops is a great way to refresh without updating cabinetry.” Danielle continues: “Quartz and natural stone countertops have different price levels that can accommodate your refresh budget. If you are updating a bathroom or other small area, using a remnant can save on costs At Sprovieri’s we have hundreds of remnants available for a discounted price.”

COLOR TRENDS

Danielle notes that warm colors are coming back into today’s design schemes, adding, “In the world of natural stone, earthy colors are also making a splash.”

“Our company’s motto is ‘Wood. Working. Beautifully.’” says Bob Doto, general manager of the firm’s new Glenview showroom. “While this refers in part to the beautiful modern and traditional kitchen designs we create, it also speaks to the way we operate as a company, which includes cabinets that are built to last, end-to-end service and accountability, environmental responsibility and being a good employer.” And when it comes to client satisfaction, Starved Rock’s mission is clear. Kitchen design specialist, Mike Gilbert adds, “Whether entertaining or gathering for a family meal, our custom cabinetry is designed to meet each client’s unique wants and needs, while elevating their lifestyle.”

“Our bespoke cabinetry is built with enduring skill and quality from the very best materials,” says Ewa Pasek, kitchen design specialist. “Because we design, manufacture, install and service our custom cabinets—as well as our doors, trim, staircases and railings—we offer a level of client care that is rare in the industry. And when it comes to sustainability, we use only water-based finishes, while our partnership with One Tree Planted means that for every cabinet we sell, we plant a tree. Finally, as a growing firm with small-town values, we are committed to creating jobs, offering apprenticeships and providing economic and social opportunities here in Illinois and across the Midwest.”

WHAT’S NEW?

“We are deeply proud of our new Chicago showroom,” Doto reveals. “Located in Glenview’s Design Center at Abt, this exciting space allows us to share who we are as a company, while showcasing a wide range of fully-finished kitchen and bathroom designs. SANDSTONE TO SPLENDOR

Upon being asked to share a personal favorite product, Justyna Piwowarczyk, sales representative for Illinois and Missouri, points to quartzite. “It is my go-to for any kitchen or bathroom, because there is something so unique and special about preserving this geological marvel within a perimeter. Whether it’s a sand-based quartzite or crystalline body, each shares a special story for the end user and their home.”

REFRESH WITH STONE

Piwowarczyk shares two impactful ways to use stone for a quick update.

• Countertops: Installing a new natural or engineered stone product for your countertops can make a considerable difference.

• Backsplash: If countertops get too costly, consider replacing your backsplash. My personal favorite trend is a porcelain full-height backsplash.

The use of exquisite stones in the kitchen and bath does not appear to be a trend that will leave the scene anytime soon. However, the way designers are incorporating these unique pieces has creatively evolved. Just ask the team at Terrazzo & Marble Supply Companies. “Marble is now a mainstay in people’s homes, but we’re also seeing a strong decline in everything monochromatic,” says regional sales manager Kamila Otten. “People are looking to make a statement, and mixed marble is the perfect way to achieve texture, interest and a little bit of fun.” As for what other stone selections T&M is accommodating, design channel representative Emily Boyce weighs in: “Natural stone will always be what the majority of my designers gravitate toward for both the kitchen and bath. We are noticing an increase in the use of organic materials such as limestone and travertine.”

TRIM TECH DESIGNS

Great kitchen and bath design begins with finely-crafted cabinetry. That simple fact inspired Kelly Sopel and Bobby Hanson to launch Trim Tech Designs in 2007. Today, the best friends and partners lead a team of highly-skilled craftspeople who design and build custom cabinets that exceed their clients’ aesthetic and functional needs with exceptional quality and durability. “From custom cabinet doors to elegant millwork to one-of-a-kind furnishings and complete kitchen, bath or closet organization designs, we create beautiful pieces that stand the test of time,” Sopel says. And Trim Tech’s bespoke experience makes each project seamless. “Our in-house designers help clients define their style by bringing together multiple elements that add up to one cohesive picture,” Hanson shares. “No matter what personalization means to you, our professionals are ready to make home design dreams come true.”

DESIGN DOSSIER

What’s driving great design and artistry? Kelly Sopel and Bobby Hanson share their insights.

• What sets you apart in the industry? The fact that our finishing department can create pretty much anything is the cherry on top of the Trim Tech experience.

• Share your primary rule for designing kitchens and baths. First and foremost, design for function.

• How is technology driving your work? Smart lighting that is operated and adjusted via an app is an important element in cabinet design today.

• What design elements are in high demand? There is a strong focus on expansive pantries, with appliances and prep stations moving out of the kitchen and into these work spaces.

• Talk about a unique project. We helped create a humidor for a client’s guitar collection that was part of a living room built-in.

• How about hardware and accessories? They are very important. Over the past few years, knobs and pulls have gone from merely functional to the jewelry of cabinet design.

From Every Angle

Precise craftsmanship and sumptuous finishes enrich a couple’s bejeweled life.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE SCHWARTZ

hrough a jeweler’s loupe, beauty lies in the smallest of details. So much depends on microscopic craftsmanship: the exact angle of a gemstone facet, the symmetry of a line, the precise soldering of varying materials into a polished whole. As partners both in life and in their fine jewelry company, the owners of this Winnetka dwelling deeply appreciate the artistry behind the finer points in design—a sentiment shared by Marli Jones, who was tasked with completing their empty-nester abode. “I’m always thinking about how to turn something up just 10 degrees more,” says the interior designer of her work. “From far away, you may not read the level of detail and depth, but you still experience it.”

Architect Scott Renken had already established the main structure’s layout, and the couple coaxed builder Jay Kennedy—who constructed their first family home—from semiretirement to bring it to life. So, Jones and her team, Amanda Clemente Eby and Brooke Kamins, concentrated on honing the architectural finishes. The designer first focused on the woodwork to craft a subtle yet distinctive character, starting with the herringbone flooring that “really opens up and unites the spaces by bringing that pattern everywhere,” Jones says. The entry’s custom fluted wall paneling proved especially intricate, cut perfectly to conceal doors leading to the coat closet and powder room, “so everything felt really seamless,” she adds.

This delicate craftsmanship continues in the kitchen cabinetry, featuring more fluted wood as well as panels of brass inlay painstakingly hand patinated to achieve the right hue. The team also lined the coordinating brass hood with a thin sliver of the same statuary quartzite used for the countertops. Composing this fusion of wood, metal and stone “felt like making jewelry,” Jones notes.

Material and color-wise, the designer favored the subdued over the flashy, from naturally stained white oak millwork to pale Venetian plaster walls exuding a subtle luster. Yet there are a few bold exceptions, such as in the seductive cocktail lounge. There the Venetian plaster is a stormy charcoal, its darkness amplifying the striking veins of the carved brown marble fireplace and forest-green velvet armchairs. The three-seasons porch too embraces a richer

palette, its walls lined with Japanese shou sugi ban wood paneling carefully charred to create a textured finish. Inspired by Moroccan mosaics, Chicago artist Steven Hettrich then hand painted a geometric mural on the ceiling washed in tones of weathered gold.

“We gravitated to things that had an interesting shape,” Jones says. And when nothing quite suited, they designed bespoke items, like the dining area’s brass-and-ebonizedoak table that artfully expands and contracts to accommodate both larger dinner parties and more intimate meals. The team also experimented with upholstery, exploring fabric’s sculptural potential by creating elaborate tufting for pieces like the bar area’s built-in banquette and the living room’s oversize sapphire mohair ottomans. The couple’s bedroom in particular became their crowning achievement: Twillupholstered wood paneling pads the bed and headboard wall. “We wanted to give the space some dimensionality, so the panels almost look like faceted diamonds,” Jones describes.

Lighting often functions as the proverbial jewelry in home design, but Jones pushed poetic license further “by partnering with makers who were doing some really interesting forms that were off the beaten path,” she says. No two pieces are alike, from the foyer’s chandelier cluster of carved-glass globes to the minimalist hexagons floating over the dining table. Reminiscent of playful earrings, sconces throughout the abode feature brass tassel-like details and hammered metal finishes.

For every visibly crafted element, there is another destined to be overlooked at a casual glance—which is by design. There’s the way the recessed shelves float so perfectly in the living room’s built-ins, creating a shadow box effect. Or how the fluted air vent in the entrance hall melts into the surrounding wall panels. And then there are the black-stained oak frames, cut just so to follow an archway’s gentle curve—a curve echoed again and again throughout the home, from the rounded edges of the dining table to the curved lip of the bathroom vanity’s Carrara marble countertop.

Piece by minuscule piece, everything links together into a cohesive whole. “Really no stone was left unturned,” the designer muses. “That’s how you create a really thoughtful space that you get to appreciate time and time again.”

Mix & Match

Inspired by London townhomes, a designer unites vintage and contemporary furnishings.

he blank-canvas characteristics of a new house—crisp, classic palette; rooms ready for decor of any style—seemed to be just what an East Coast family needed as they attempted to assimilate the stylistically diverse furnishings from their former home in Connecticut into an urban dwelling in Chicago’s Old Town. But the stately new build they fell in love with wasn’t exactly bare bones. In fact, two years earlier, when interior designer Elizabeth Taich collaborated with builder Tim Kerins on the finish selections for the threestory residence—plus a fourth-floor roof deck— overlooking Hudson Chess Park, she knew that the elaborate details of the interior architecture would appeal to buyers with a specific taste. “Tim is a very traditional builder,” she laughs. “All of the crown molding is a good 10 inches high.” His penchant for marble is evident, too. “We went through a lot of slabs,” Taich adds. “In the primary bathroom, the walls are clad in marble, the windows are slabbed in marble. I tried to talk him out of it—and I’m so glad he didn’t listen.”

As it turned out, the classic sensibility with which Kerins imbued the abode was right up the new owners’ aesthetic alley. It also provided the inspiration Taich needed when the couple hired her to furnish the house with both items they already owned—a mix of transitional designs and European antiques—as well as midcentury-style pieces they admired and hoped to acquire. “I found myself repeatedly looking at images of London townhomes that were updated through the use of modern furniture,” Taich says. “I decided to lean into the traditional architectural elements of this home and expand upon them with contemporary touches.”

To the living room walls, she added elegant moldings; for the adjacent dining room, she chose a Venetian plaster finish. In other rooms, she painted Kerins’ millwork with cool colors, from a moody blue-black in the family room to a sea blue in a guest bedroom. Eye-catching wallpapers and embellished draperies complement those hues while introducing a range of patterns, setting the scene for furnishings that provide striking juxtapositions of era and style.

In the wife’s study, a pair of vintage rattan étagères—painted mauve to complement the colorful abstract draperies—rests atop a greenand-ivory rug cut to follow the room’s angles. In the living room, modern Danish armchairs reupholstered in a ribbed blue velvet sit alongside an eglomise credenza as well as a new sofa with rust-colored mohair-velvet upholstery and an air of “French glamour,” as Taich describes it. That touch of French influence carries over into the dining room, where an antique Louis XVI-style gilded console topped with red marble presides. “It’s one of the more ornate pieces the clients had,” the designer notes. It is paired, rather unexpectedly, with midcentury-style dining chairs, a traditional round table and a showstopping vintage chandelier comprising multiple tiers of textured Murano-glass cylinders. “It took four people three hours to hang it,” Taich says of the latter, “but it really sets the mood.”

A light-filled guest bedroom overlooking the park features an antique bed with a graceful canopy—and a warm wood finish that initially gave Taich pause. “When I first saw it, I was a little worried because it’s a very red piece of wood; how do you tone that down?” she says. Her solution was simple and effective: A silver floral wallpaper accented with tiny songbirds rendered in soft brown and red hues provides just enough complementary color to make the bed feel at home. In the primary bedroom, where another antique bed dominates, deep pink and purple fabrics complement the furniture’s dark wood tone, while a platinum-colored grass-cloth wallcovering, shimmering gray carpet and bubblelike glass chandelier keep the mood light.

These rooms represent not just a marriage of styles but also the meeting of a family’s past and present. “I had to ask myself, ‘What can I add that will respect what they already have while also reflecting how they want their current residence to look?’ ” Taich says. “It was a balancing act.” Her success means that whether they’re gathered at the custom kitchen banquette or perched on rattan lounge chairs that have been with the family for years, they’re immersed in an aesthetic just familiar enough to make this new chapter in a fresh space feel like home.

Fresh Take

Matt Bodett mines the past and his own mind to create works of art.

LUXESOURCE.COM 237
LUXESOURCE.COM 238

For Matt Bodett, the brain is a powerful muse. A visual and performance artist, poet, and professor with a downtown studio, he was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder as an undergraduate. But Bodett, who went on to earn his master’s in painting and printmaking from Boise State University, prefers the more archaic, somewhat romantic expression of “madness,” with its connotations of creativity and heightened access to emotional expression.

“In our contemporary discourse, disabilities can be too tied to ‘How do we fix this?’ rather than ‘How can we channel this experience into something meaningful?’ ” says Bodett, who works as a disability advocate. “For me, the most powerful way to manage my

symptoms is to embrace the madness and create artwork around it.”

With painting being a major focus of his practice, Bodett often embarks on oil works using an image culled from reference photos of the Western canon— Napoleon, Hercules, St. Francis or Jesus, for example—by such painters as Rubens, Caravaggio, Gérard and Michelangelo. “As a culture, we share a rich visual vocabulary of the ‘masterworks,’ ” the artist notes. “But when we look beyond the traditional narrative—in history, religion, mythology— well, often that person seems crazy!”

Among Bodett’s female subjects are Eve, a passel of saints and Botticelli’s Three Graces. “Throughout history, women have been viewed as either subservient ciphers or magical creatures. If they dared to take on a more assertive role, they were deemed ‘hysterics’—think Joan of Arc,” he adds.

After capturing the essence of a person or scene on canvas, Bodett switches gears. Working intuitively, “in that mad place where language and the physical experience of the world is slippery,” Bodett describes, the artist disrupts his compositions with scribbles, scraps of poetry, over-washing and spots of color. His goal, after all, is not to replicate old masters but to illuminate the processes of a mentally disordered mind and engage the viewer on a visceral level. “The experience isn’t about the preciousness of the art commodity but rather about sparking a response in the moment,” he explains.

Bodett, whose works will be exhibited at Artruss this fall, is like a visual DJ—sampling images and layering elements to create works that thrum with emotional resonance. His paintings defy easy interpretation while daring you to look away.

Matt Bodett distorts historical images to create a new narrative, from using pieces by classical painters like Michelangelo (opposite) as references to actually drawing atop printed images from artists such as Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (left). Internal Correspondence (below) was inspired by a Caravaggio painting, while Help (left, background) draws from François Gérard’s portrait of Napoleon.

he geography of where one grows up has the power to influence aesthetic leanings even years down the road. Such was the case for a young couple with two children that were newly settled into a contemporary Glencoe Victorian. Raised on the East Coast, the husband envisioned a preppy, tailored vibe. The wife, who hails from California, was drawn to a more relaxed milieu. To marry their respective styles, the pair hired architect Heidi Paul and designer Hayley Kauffmann. “We went through an evolution to decide the language of the interior,” the wife says. “We call it sophisticated California.”

Paul and Kauffmann began by replacing the home’s overly detailed moldings with more streamlined, contemporary versions. And while the kitchen required few tweaks thanks to its crisp white cabinetry, marble countertops and integrated backsplash, they added a six-inch stainless steel lip around the hood for a bit of bling. A blue grass-cloth wallcovering and Roman shades in a toile-like pattern complete the scene. “It was surgery more than it was demolition,” Paul notes. “The fine cuts made a big difference.”

As did the addition of a second set of French doors in the family room, flooding the space with natural light and creating direct access to an outdoor kitchen underneath a cantilevered pergola. Set against the new doors, a cloud-like glass bubble chandelier floating over a white marble-topped tulip table surrounded by cane chairs creates a light-hearted backdrop to the space’s main sitting area.

“We wanted to make sure each room had its own personality,” the architect notes. “Yet they all speak to each other.” Kauffmann and Paul achieved this by threading subdued neutral hues throughout the first floor while using decor and architectural details to infuse each space with a distinct character. In the sitting room, for instance, floral draperies frame the verdant views. “It’s a nod to a traditional Victorian parlor,” Kauffmann says, noting that the light-filled room eases Chicago’s months of gray skies and freezing

temperatures. “Even in the dead of winter, it feels like you’re in a garden.”

Wallcoverings also helped to facilitate the elevated environment the owners envisioned, particularly a grass cloth with an abstract landscape pattern that buoys the formal dining room. There, a reflective brass chandelier with an olive leaf motif and gray dining chairs with gently curved arms reinforce the ethereal ambience. It’s an ideal space for hosting, but the husband had an even bolder idea for entertaining: a wine-tasting room. Glass doors framed in black steel open to the cool blue space—a color inspired by boat hulls he’d seen at East Coast yacht clubs. Wine storage shelves crafted from rift-cut oak are built into the walls on either side of the doorway, and a quartet of plaid chairs sit atop a hide rug in a chevron pattern. Topping off the warm, Nantucket-esque setting is a trio of barrel-back upholstered chairs that surround a marble-topped pedestal table in the bay window.

This cozy, enveloping feel also defines the lowerlevel media room, where a pair of floor-to-ceiling murals with a palm motif play off the dark blue ceiling and walls. Low-slung sectionals covered in a complementary hue create a cozy spot for the couple to entertain, while floor lamps with feather shades resembling palm fronds add a sense of whimsy. “This was the first room we designed, and it told me that this client was up for some fun,” Kauffmann says. “The idea was to transport you to a Hollywood lounge. It’s very glam, but it’s also a place where everyone can hang out.”

In fact, there is hardly a space that isn’t welcoming to guests. During a recent Italianthemed housewarming party, the owners cooked pizzas in the outdoor kitchen as their guests moved back and forth between the patio and the dessert bar in the formal dining room. “We built the house to share with others,” the wife explains. But it’s also a home that they enjoy on a more intimate, personal level. Living there, the wife says, has changed her outlook on life. “I’m focusing more on joyful moments,” she notes, recalling the way the mid-afternoon sunlight reflects off the dining room chandelier’s gold petals. “This home takes my breath away.”

DROZD DESIGN

847.313.5788 | drozdesign.co | eric.drozd

Oftentimes designers find themselves drawn to the calling at a young age. For Eric Drozd of Drozd Design, it was as a precocious 14-year-old that he designed his first property. “My father has been flipping and developing houses my entire life,” he explains. “Inspired by him, I started young and it’s been my passion ever since.” Drozd earned a degree in architecture from the College of Architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology, worked for several designers and builders and then started his own business in 2022. Drozd adds that he’s also a licensed real estate agent, so he is a part of the process at every stage, “from purchase to design and construction, and, ultimately, the sale.” When he’s not working, travel is the most important part of Drozd’s personal life. “I spend my down time planning my next trip,” he says. “Paris has always been my favorite, but Istanbul, Vienna and Buenos Aires are all close seconds.”

BE BOLD

Drozd’s advice for others yearning to achieve their goals?

“Don’t be afraid to reach out.” He adds, “I got my first job because I contacted them. An honest personality paired with confidence in what you do helps you sell yourself and your business to any potential client. Don’t be shy about putting yourself out there!”

HAYLEY MAUREEN INTERIOR DESIGN

Among the up-and-coming designers to keep an eye on, one can certainly place Hayley Kauffmann. One of her very first projects as owner and principal of Hayley Maureen Interior Design took home a Luxe RED Awards Readers’ Choice win. “That really opened the door to putting myself and my work out there,” she shares. “I have since published more projects and recently took home wins for Residence Under 3,000 Square Feet with ASID Illinois and Singular Residential Room with ASID Wisconsin.” Asked to reveal the secrets to such success, Kauffmann points to her comprehensive approach. “Our expertise is envisioning how elements combine for maximum impact of beauty, flow and function,” she says. “We infuse unique color, texture, scale and materials to elicit emotions that inspire. We often embrace the unexpected, but with a refined, modern sensibility.”

INSIDER INSIGHT

What advice would Kauffmann give to fellow designers?

“Embrace the client,” she says. “Some of the best outcomes happen when a client throws a curveball or introduces a treasured piece of art or furniture. These personal touches are what make our job so beautiful and each space a living, breathing entity. They inspire.”

NEXT UP

“We have a few whole-house renovations with some interesting Chicago history on the boards right now, ranging from a midcentury ranch to a historic row home that we are really excited about,” Kauffmann says. “My husband, Greg, and I are also slowly but surely renovating our own midcentury ranch and have plans to take on a big renovation next year— with our two kids, Dane and Romy, in tow.”

HOILAND STUDIOS

When embarking on a new construction or remodeling project, many homeowners find themselves settling for generic lighting, unaware of how tailored lighting can bring a space to the next level by enhancing its architectural details and functionality. Enter, Kiersten Hoiland. Drawing upon her graduate studies in interior architecture, over a decade of high-end residential lighting design projects around the country and inspiration from travels throughout the globe, she is passionate about giving her clients exceptional lighting they often didn’t know to be possible. “A memorable client response we experienced was, ‘I had no idea what good lighting felt like until I worked with you. I wouldn’t build another house without a lighting designer on my team,’” Hoiland shares. “We pride ourselves on exceeding expectations and showcasing the difference great lighting can make in a space.”

KIERSTEN HOILAND, PRINCIPAL LIGHTING DESIGNER

BIG PICTURE

“Do you know how many times the lights are edited out of photos in print and online?” Hoiland says. “My goal for our social media presence is to share our process, inspiration and how architectural lighting can be seamlessly integrated into the architecture so that the lights don’t need to be edited out of our projects’ photos.”

DESIGN ETHOS

Hoiland describes the signature design methodology she and her team follow: “We use an additive approach, starting with the decorative fixture locations and then incorporating additional layers based on the architectural aesthetic, function of the space and client’s preferences. This leads us to the best solutions.”

M VIAMONTES ARCHITECTURE + INTERIORS

Launching a new business in spring 2020 amidst a global health crisis may have seemed risky, but for M Viamontes Architecture + Interiors it was just the right time to start something fresh. Founder Michael Viamontes leads the architectural practice with over 18 years of experience. In 2021, Mindy Viamontes joined as a partner. Also a licensed architect, she is intimately involved in all design phases, including architecture and interiors. Jennifer Durand joined the team in early 2023 as principal of interiors. This trio is off to a tremendous start and taking the Midwest by storm. Michael says, “In just three years since starting the practice, we’ve already undertaken about 90 projects in seven states.”

They are very happy to share that most of the work has stemmed from referrals. Michael adds, “We pride ourselves in building lasting relationships with our clients, contractors and vendors.”

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS

When asked to provide advice for others who are striving to achieve their goals, Mindy shares some inspiration: “There is never a perfect time to start a business, so take a risk and never stop building your client base. Attend every single networking event possible because each person you meet is a potential client or new referral.” Jennifer echoes these sentiments, adding: “Make sure to build a practice based on your values. Focus on the type of clients and projects you want to pursue, but also take on every project you can handle when first starting out—you never know where it might lead!”

SARAH COE DESIGN

630.547.2445 | sarahcoedesign.com | sarahcoedesign

Someone once said, “We long for a beautiful home, because we long for a beautiful life.” It may be an anonymous quote, but it has had an immense impact on Sarah Coe. A talented designer, Coe has been in the industry for decades but relaunched her namesake firm, alongside a retail and showroom location titled The Design Studio, in 2018. Throughout it all, the idea of using design to give her clients the gift of their desired lifestyle has been a driving force. “The spaces I create are designed to deepen relationships,” Coe says. “I love establishing function and order first, then adding in the comfort and aesthetics to make it feel warm and inviting.” In the process, she conveys her niche expertise, which lies in the incorporation of high-end materials, elegant furnishings and exquisite finishes. “I pay meticulous attention to details, and we’re all about white-glove service. It is a luxury experience.”

TEAMWORK, DREAMWORK

Asked to talk about her biggest goals for the coming months, Coe points to a continuation of a current mission. “I am focused on creating a healthy work environment. I have installed stand-up desks but also allow my designers who commute from the city to work from home a few days a month. During the last holiday season, I took everyone to the Peninsula Spa for a well-deserved R&R day. I have to take good care of my team; I couldn’t do what I do without them!”

SARAH COE, OWNER AND LEAD INTERIOR DESIGNER

Sometimes, the experiences that best support your future dreams aren’t the ones you would have expected. Take it from Sarah Montgomery. Today, she’s the owner of her namesake interior design firm, but her past is rich with varied creative endeavors. “Interestingly, I think the most valuable skills I possess are those I gained from teaching beginner sewing to adults,” she shares. “I learned how to get people excited and help them become comfortable with trying a new thing.” Now, that talent aids her as she strives to inspire and influence her clients throughout the design process. Asked what she’s reaching for next, she responds enthusiastically. “I’d like to grow my team and take on bigger projects, becoming a better leader along the way. I want to continue finding the right people to work for and with, so I can do what I do best.”

TOP TAKEAWAY

Montgomery has a key piece of advice for anyone starting out in the industry alongside her: “Be aware of your zone of genius and unafraid to ask for help! Having started my business in my 30s, I already understood where my talent and value lies, so I didn’t try to do everything all at once. By outsourcing things like bookkeeping, I was able to devote myself entirely to this creative pursuit I love—and that organically grew my business.”

CREATIVITY ABOUNDS

“Most of my friends are creatives, so most of my free social time is spent going to design events and art openings,” Montgomery says. “I love how Chicago feels like a ‘small big city’ and how generous and open people are.”

VF INTERIORS

It is often the case that prioritizing what really matters is a door to great success. For Veronica Ferro, principal of VF Interiors, this means valuing quality over quantity. “I am selective with the projects I take on, ” she says. “The client’s personality plays a role in this decision—feeling like we have a strong connection is more important than the scope of the project.” The benefits of this ethos are clear: Despite starting her firm less than a decade ago, Ferro has built a reputation for intricate client relationships, repeat projects and creating personalized spaces. Her skill is evidenced, too, in her industry stature. “I became certified with the NCIDQ last year, and I will be president of ASID Illinois in 2024 through 2025, about which I’m thrilled.” Asked what advice she would give to designers just starting out, she says, “Know your worth and accept nothing less.”

VERONICA FERRO, PRINCIPAL

CRAVING COMMUNITY

“I am active in organizations like ASID and IDS, and this has allowed me to connect with so many of my fellow designers,” Ferro shares. “It can be a little lonely and isolating to work solo, so having a community that I can turn to, whether to talk through problems or just have fun, has been one of the most influential things for my career.”

A WORLD OF INFLUENCE

When she isn’t knee deep in a project, Ferro loves to the hit the road (or the air) in search of inspiration. “I like to travel and explore new places,” she says. Still, when she isn’t on an exciting trip, she keeps the creativity flowing in other ways. “I enjoy spending time with family and friends, reading, walking along the lakefront and engaging in self-care—if I could go to the spa every week, I would!”
