Castle in the Sky

Within this newly-built Denver residence’s contemporary twist on Prairie style architecture, the visual patterns of electronic music play a key role.

A well-traveled couple’s new abode is filled with collectibles and heirlooms gathered overseas, bringing a global perspective to the Mile High City.

One Denver-based mixedmedia artist explores the limits of abstraction by creating enigmatic compositions brimming with color and movement.

Set enviably close to Breckenridge Ski Resort, a large family’s seven-level vacation home takes modern mountain lodge aesthetics to new heights.

LETTER

What Sustains Us

For this issue on The Power of Architecture, I’ve been reflecting on its purpose and meaning. Aside from shelter, security and function, architecture serves as a spatial arrangement that forges communities and speaks to the culture of a place. At best, the spaces that surround us enrich the quality of interactions we have within them. It’s the reason we feel peaceful while sitting by a poolside loggia or happiness when ascending a stairwell with a view of nature. Our homes, and the buildings we encounter in our daily lives, also reveal much about how we see ourselves. The potency of architecture lies in its ability to innovate through materiality and design, to push us to think differently about our environment, and, most importantly, to lift the human spirit.

The most innovative dishwasher ever. From the world’s premier sustainable appliance brand.

With CornerIntense®, the industry’s first rectangular-motion spray arm, Beko’s 36, 38 and 39 model dishwashers clean dishes like never before. But they also use half the water and two-thirds the energy. It’s the most significant breakthrough in dishwasher technology in nearly 100 years. Along with this revolutionary approach, Beko’s new line includes custom panel options with fully flush installation and industry-standard dimensions. It also boasts a suite of impressive features. beko.com/us-en bekoappliancesusa beko_usa bekoappliancesusa

• The EverClean™ filter automatically rinses with pressurized water to remove food residue and debris, keeping it cleaner up to four times longer.

• DeepWash™ technology uses three water-adjustable jets to make sure tall bottles or jars with narrow openings get the extra powerful clean they need, too. • Next up, SelfDry™ unseals and opens the door on its own, letting air in to dry dishes naturally without the use of additional energy. Oh, and did we mention? These dishwashers are so quiet (the 39 model’s operating sound level is 39dBa), you’ll need the red light that shines on the floor to know they’re running. They’re the planet’s new best friend—and yours too. Bring your Beko home, starting in late May 2022.

Cleaner dishes. Cleaner planet. Cleaner conscience. Beko’s mission is simple, yet impressive. It aims to redefine what is possible in terms of performance, reduce the use of natural resources and price within the reach of everyone who wants to lead a healthy and eco-friendly life. It seems a tall order, but Beko has done it time and again, and its latest endeavor champions the trio of intentions.

Rising to the challenge of the dirtiest dishes, glassware, pots and pans, Beko dishwashers conquer it all for more peace of mind.

Webb says. “The topography, materials, colors, views, sun and wind all inform the aesthetics and function of the home.” Additionally, Webb and his team have spent years exploring new places to find inspiration, with Japan, Italy and the Alps holding a special status in their well of influences.

“ We seek to be innovative and original with each design, making it specific to our clients and the home’s surroundings.”

EXPERT INSIGHTS Webb gets candid about his world-class firm and shares his unmatched expertise.

DOING GREAT WORK When it comes to executing the design work, Webb notes that while he enjoys threedimensional and forward-thinking pursuits, he still loves putting pen to paper. “We are always adapting and embracing new technology and cutting-edge concepts,” Webb shares. “However, we still believe that high-level design and construction will always remain firmly based in old-world craftsmanship.” But above all of these creative leanings and forward-thinking pursuits, their clients are the most important factor in every KH Webb project. “They are absolutely our design partners,” Webb says. “Their goals, desires, budgets, timing and expectations drive it all from the very beginning. Our ultimate objective is to surpass their expectations and see them living their happiest, best lives.”

Top Integration of indoor and outdoor spaces has been an increasing goal for the firm’s clients in the past year. What was the first project that put your firm on the map? We worked on a 460-acre property with a rock-climbing wall, shooting range and a 32,000-square-foot main house. We also designed several other buildings on the property, including a 22,000-square-foot recreation lodge and a car barn to house the ranch toys, as well as a sheriff’s office complete with a jail to serve as the client’s personal office. It’s actually now for sale for $78 million. How can clients ensure a painless design process? We find that building a great team and fostering collaboration at the start is the key. Successful projects (and the ones we are most proud of) are those in which the various teams creatively feed off of one another to arrive at the best possible solutions.

CHECK IN HOTEL CLIO

The former JW Marriott Denver Cherry Creek hotel emerged from an expansive renovation this spring with a reimagined concept, name and interior aesthetic. Designed by Mark Wilson and Yoko Ishihara of California-based Wilson Ishihara, the new Hotel Clio—part of Marriott Bonvoy’s Luxury Collection—nods to the gold-rush era with contemporary decor. In the lobby, a screen of interlocking brass and stainless-steel slats defines the registration area, and light fixtures inspired by gold miners’ lamps illuminate the check-in desks. Brass-bordered marble floor tiles carry the gold-dusted theme into an adjacent lounge, where the designers lined a fireplace wall in gold-veined white marble. In spacious guest rooms and suites, the glamour—and a palette of soft blush, green and sand tones—continues, creating an air of sophisticated serenity. At the property’s new restaurant, Toro Latin Kitchen & Lounge, colors deepen to rich hues of caramel and cocoa—the better to complement chef Richard Sandoval’s intensely flavorful menu of Pan-Latin cuisine. hotelcliocherrycreek.com

MEET THE MAKER RADNA SEGAL

How does your cultural heritage inform your art? I was born in Elista, Kalmykia, Russia, which is the only predominantly Buddhist region in Europe. Kalmykia’s history and religious roots inspire much of my work. What materials do you favor? I like to use experimental materials like plaster, foil, feathers, glitter, wood, nails and beads. Harder materials create movement in my work. Wood and plaster resemble

mountainous earth, while beads create swirls and mystery, and nails show toughness on an otherwise soft canvas. Tell us about how you incorporate ancient Mongolian Clear Script. I learned to write Clear Script in elementary school. It was a part of Kalmyk education to learn our native writing style before our assimilation into Russian society. You read it by scanning your eyes up and down. I started off by incorporating just one word—Radna—into my artwork. Now I’m brave enough to write a whole poem. In what other ways is your work evolving? I want to invite more softness into my pieces, and hopefully that will inspire more softness in people viewing my art, too. I want them to feel moved by history and inspired to take action. To feel bold, resilient and undaunted. And that we can make it through tough times because we’ve been here before.

At the Denver Art Museum, “Curious Visions: Toward Abstract Photography” (through June 19) chronicles a century of experimentation with abstraction by the likes of Eliot Porter, Man Ray, Edward Weston, Gary Emrich, Jungjin Lee and Laura Letinsky. In the “Through the Lens” area, visitors can dive into the work of Aaron Siskind and experiment with creating their own images. denverartmuseum.org

In Denver, as part of a yearlong celebration of Frank Lloyd Wright, Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art’s “Frank Lloyd Wright Inside the Walls” (from June 17 to January 8) will feature objects from 11 of the architect and designer’s building projects. The exhibition will explore his practice of integrating landscape, architecture, furnishings and decorative pieces to create “a total work of art.” kirklandmuseum.org

This spring, the Shigeru Ban-designed Aspen Art Museum will present an alternative façade by multidisciplinary artist Gaetano Pesce: the monumental My Dear Mountains, which will cover the building with a figurative image of the sun setting over mountains. A NEW CROP OF STYLISH SPOTS MAKES THIS RESORT TOWN THE PERFECT HIGH-COUNTRY SUMMER DESTINATION.

ARHAUS STUDIO After taking in the innovative exhibitions of the Aspen Art Museum, head next door to shop the newly opened Arhaus Studio. The city’s Muse Building is home to the fifth location of the brand, whose concept is to prioritize customization and concierge-style service in a more intimate store setting. Within the new showroom, 3,114 square feet of inviting, room-style displays highlight furnishings specifically selected to inspire Aspenites. An on-site design center also allows shoppers and designers to collaborate with Arhaus consultants on room concepts, layouts and one-of-a-kind designs. arhaus.com

The 133-year-old Hotel Jerome’s very first guests would have felt right at home at the property’s lavish new coffee shop, Felix Roasting Co.—which has become the place to start your day in Aspen. Designed by renowned San Francisco-based designer Ken Fulk, the café’s interior evokes a Victorian-era parlor with its original tin ceiling and millwork, and a new custom wallcovering whose arabica-flower motif is reminiscent of a classic William Morris pattern. A dusty-pink coat of paint on the wood paneling, deep-verdigris velvet on the channel-tufted banquettes and copper bands on French bistro tables add to a palette that takes cues from the turn-of-the-20 th-century Aesthetic Movement. Contemporary portraits by artist Jose Trujillo, displayed alongside customized historic portraits, offer another hint that this is no mere throwback café. aubergeresorts.com

Just steps away, in a shimmering bar and fireplace-warmed living room, angular chandeliers hang from the wood-paneled ceiling. HOMEOWNERS WHO PRIORITIZE HOLISTIC HEALTH IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS ARE LOOKING TO THE SOUTH—WHERE WELLNESS COMMUNITIES AND AGRIHOODS ARE RISING FAST. W R I T T E N B Y K AT H R Y N O ’ S H E A- E VA N S

It’s not often that a kid’s birthday party will change your life. But for Monica Olsen, who hosted her son’s fourth fête at Serenbe, a wellness community 32 miles from her then-home in Atlanta, it was a transformative experience. “We had a pony party at the gorgeous stables which were designed by architect Peter Block and it was this magical day,” she recalls. “We thought, ‘Maybe we should just stop at the real estate office while we’re here…’ They pointed out a house, we bought it and basically never left!”

LUXESOURCE.COM

Founded in 2005, Serenbe is tailormade to help residents live their best lives. It’s outfitted with a new 3,000-squarefoot spa, yoga studio, swim club, artist in residence program, lush hiking trails and many more wellness-geared elements that make it idyllic to say the least. And, it’s gaining traction: The community had around 100 residents when Olsen purchased her home in 2009, and boasts 1,000 today. All properties there—including townhouses, cottages and estates, most of which look more like

they’re in Scandinavia than Georgia— are EarthCraft certified. (Translation: they’re energy and water efficient, saving 30 percent of the energy costs of a typical home.) And Serenbe is not the only Southern community that epitomizes the notion that health is wealth. “Agrihood”—planned developments that mingle sustainablybuilt real estate and farm-to-your-owntable amenities—is booming. Community & Farm sits perched along the French Broad River and features a four-acre organic farm. Every home here is required to use a geothermal heating and cooling system, which comes with a hidden perk in the sweltering Southern summers: no HVAC noise buzzing. Broker and owner Allison Smith notes, “Pandemic migration has taken property sales through the roof as major lifestyle changes allow people to now work from anywhere.” Meanwhile, at Tennessee’s 5,200-acre hotel and residence Blackberry Mountain, sister property to the iconic Blackberry Farm, the lucky few private homeowners

on premises have access to wellness offerings that range from sound bathing to an aerial yoga platform. And yes—the untrammeled wilderness is a huge part of the allure too. Only 20 miles from Charleston is the new Kiawah River, where half of the 2,000-acre waterfront community will remain entirely wild and untouched. Protecting the natural world here is vitally important to this agrihood, which includes The Goatery—a farm dedicated

to artisanal goat milk products—beehives and pasture-raised cattle as well as myriad farms for produce. Residents can also enjoy maritime forest trails where everything from bald eagle pairings to migrating monarch butterflies are frequently spotted. “We love the community and people,” Kiawah River homeowner Megan Hendricks says. “But most of all, we love the wildlife we get to see every day while walking on the paths by the river.”

ARCHITECT THOMAS KLIGERMAN REFLECTS ON THE ENDURING APPEAL OF AN INNATELY AMERICAN VERNACULAR. A S T O L D T O G R AC E B E U L E Y H U N T

When I close my eyes and imagine a house, I picture the sounds it makes: footsteps on the staircase, slamming screen doors, faint voices from downstairs while falling asleep. If someone asked me where I’d choose to live out my days, I’d say a Shingle style home because they reverberate like a drum. My connection to buildings has always been visceral. By the time I left for college, I had lived in 10 houses— saltboxes up and down Connecticut; apartments in New York, London and Paris; an adobe in New Mexico. My father’s work moved us often, but summers were always for sailing in Rhode Island, which is where my love for shingled homes cemented. Shingle style architecture emerged in Newport in 1876, combining the simple forms of early Colonial buildings with the quirks of Victorian Stick style. The 1880s were fascinating years—everything was brave and new. During this time, rooms grew from small, symmetrical boxes into episodic progressions with

abstract shapes and enormous doors that opened onto terraces. These homes weren’t trying to be Italianate villas or French chateaus. Here was an American style. I’m grouped with classical architects, but I’m a closet modernist who is always pushing to see how modern traditional homes can become—yet I never want to lose sight of what people love about them. Shingles are a medium that encourages daring design because they’re so lightweight. You can have soaring cantilevers and chimneys that look like great blades dropped from the heavens. With shingles, you can make a home look like the sail of a boat filled with air. Have you ever sat on the porch of a shingled house in the rain? There’s this wonderful, cozy scent from the cedar that brings comfort like a favorite sweater. That’s the thing; no matter who you are, whether you live in Santa Fe or Seal Harbor, the draw of home is strong for Americans. And Shingle style buildings don’t look like houses, they look—and feel—like homes.

Parisian designer Vincent Darré’s fantastical collection with OKA includes the Spiral Lamp & Shade, XIV Mirror, Gemini Vase and Lyric Console Table.

LUXESOURCE.COM

As British retailer OKA expands its horizons stateside—it arrived in Dallas last November and will open in Westport, Connecticut, in September—a new collection with French designer Vincent Darré is next on the agenda. Darré, a former fashion heavyweight, captured the imagination of Sue Jones, Co-Founder and Creative Director of OKA, with his Cocteau-esque interiors. “Seeing Vincent’s work in the flesh excited me about the prospect of a collaboration,” recalls Jones after an early visit to Darré’s Paris atelier. “Everything he touches has a sense of drama to it.” For the duo’s tightly edited four-piece collection, Darré channeled OKA’s aristocratic-meets-bohemian style—a look that reminds him of photographer Cecil Beaton’s work—while also referencing the Neoclassical era and romantic 18th-century gardens. The result? Furnishings that work just as well in a group as they do individually. Included are a marble-topped console supported by ancient ruin-inspired legs, a column-like floor lamp (its spiral shade reminds Jones of a Philip Treacy hat), a black-and-white Grecian face vase and a mirror embellished with musical instruments and starfish. The playful collaboration allowed Jones and Darré to have a little fun while still championing true craftsmanship and creative ingenuity. oka.com

Lasting Lineage Sara Hayat Design

Design is in Sara Hayat’s DNA. Since the 1870s, her family’s company M. Hayat & Bros. has produced luxury furnishings for everyone from royal households to prominent clients, including John F. Kennedy and his famous White House rocker. So, it comes as no surprise that the need to be creative eventually struck. Setting aside a career in finance, Colorado-based Hayat set her sights on made-to-order furniture with a debut collection comprising coffee, writing and dining tables, chairs and sofas, and inventive modular seating. Each of the designer’s pieces, which have their genesis in detailed drawings, are handbuilt by her family’s longstanding artisans in Peshawar, Pakistan. While her materials lean traditional (mahogany, marble, cane, brass inlay, leather and velvet), her forms (geometric, floral, stacked and beveled) are anything but ordinary. Hayat studied joinery and detailing techniques by researching her

family’s archival catalogues in addition to referencing some of the world’s greats— Oscar Niemeyer and Pierre Paulin for further inspiration. She also became fascinated with contemporary automobile and fashion styles, making note of what she loved and which aesthetics she responded to emotionally. “Intentional design has the ability to uplift, and I want my furniture to do just that.” And her Tetris-inspired modular sofa provides a plum example. “People should be creative in how they use it,” Hayat explains, noting that the piece can morph from a sleek living room sofa into a fantastical object for play when deconstructed. “These pieces should dazzle, anchor us in the moment and remind us of what we can be.” As the newly minted furniture designer begins using her own pieces at home, she can’t help but reflect on what her parents instilled in her growing up. “My mother always believed that you should surround yourself with items that make you happy.” A legacy Hayat will surely continue to uphold. sara-hayat.com

Feeling Blue

Delft by Plain English is a five-piece tile collection featuring designs inspired by antique tiles that decorate the founder’s own home. Children Playing I (background) and Sea Creatures (inset).

LUXESOURCE.COM

Sometimes inspiration is right under one’s nose. Or in the case of Tony Niblock, co-founder of kitchen manufacturer Plain English, it was right over his Aga range, where an assortment of antique Delft tiles is proudly displayed. Niblock first started collecting the blueand-white squares after spotting them at a historic house in Yoxford, England, in the 1990s. Now, that passion has grown beyond adorning his own home and evolved into the company’s latest offering, Delft by Plain English—a collection of handmade, hand-painted tiles inspired by his findings. “There’s a freshness about the color combination, isn’t there?” posits co-founder Katie Fontana. “And it’s so wonderful that there’s been a renewed interest and understanding around Delft tiles.” The tin-glazed earthenware tiles have been synonymous with the Netherlands since the 17th century when, impervious to heat or water, they became a functional— and charming—wall decoration for homes, public buildings and palaces across Europe. Plain English’s interpretation features figurative depictions of daily life, like children skipping, as well as fantastical scenes including a mermaid admiring her reflection—all in keeping with eclectic British style that is now back in vogue. “There is a naivete about them that people find appealing,” remarks Niblock. plainenglishdesign.co.uk

NEW TRENDS The industry looks to Las Vegas Market to showcase the latest and greatest, and this summer’s takeaways have one thing to say: design right now is all about organic influences. Three industry luminaries from LVMKT’s Ahead of the Curve panel share their perspectives.

EARTHY TEXTURES

We have seen a shift from glazed and glossy materials to ceramic and earthenware ones. Wood grains with apparent texture, marbles and limestone, indoor plants, stones and other organic features are adding depth and character to spaces that have been more minimalistic up until now. Rather than museum-level polished surfaces, textured plasters that appear perfectly imperfect are proving a current favorite. Sarah Kennedy | CLB Architects Jackson, Wyoming

BIOPHILIC VIEWPOINTS

The use of natural ral materials, like wood, stone or raffia, and spaces that include natural geometries, like fractals and curves, can be highly evocative and satisfy the human need for connecting with our wild world. We are craving that, making biophilic design the mindset of the moment. We take a sum-of-the-parts arts approach, employing the atmosphere created with light, architecture, access to nature and furnishings ishings and accessories that evoke nature in our designs. We’ve been finding a lot of unique piecess that literally mimic nature and others that are more subtle. Whether they exhibit the golden ratio o or the Fibonacci sequence, such designs simply make us feel good and balanced. Currey & Company Neptune Chandelier

ARTFUL GLOW

A big trend we’re noticing this year is demand for organic lamps. Today’s modern lighting takes on sculptural shapes and gravitydefying designs to create a new type of light source—one that is functional and a work of art at the same time. This type of movement-filled design is a beautiful way to bring a lovely glow to a room, imbuing the ambience with not only light, but character. Monica Wilcox | M Wilcox Design, Allen, Texas

The highly anticipated Schiaparelli show took place at Paris’ Petit Palais art museum, where the garments, like this treasure-like shift laden with fillagree including gems and pearls, rivaled the glamorous interiors. STAYING POWER

After 16 years, designer Dana Wolter knew it was time to upgrade her Birmingham, Alabama, kitchen. She soon whipped up a pretty, elegant and detail-filled scheme, but above all else, the space needed to stand the test of time. “I like to think of this room as timeless—a kitchen that will age well and get better the more you use it,” Wolter explains. To bring her well-aging vision to life, she opted for eternally exquisite materials like

LUXESOURCE.COM

Calacatta gold marble countertops and unlacquered brass fittings, all of which patina with use and become more beautiful. Wolter also gave careful consideration to several special details, including delicate fluted cabinetry, a hidden marble spice rack above the range and a functional trough sink carved directly into the island. As Wolter learned first-hand, renovating your own space certainly comes with its perks. The designer tweaked and customized every element to align with how she wanted the space to function. One especially lovely area came about from moving walls around: A graceful display niche that houses silver and crystal tableware frequently used for meals.

Here, delicate curved stone motifs on the shelves echo detailing on the center island to tie the areas together. In contrast to the light, airy kitchen, Wolter had a bit more fun in the pantry, where a moody palette and graphic marble slab surfaces add a touch of drama. “My intention with the pantry was to repeat some of the finishes and treatments in the kitchen, and to make the rooms flow,” the designer explains. “But at the same time, I wanted the pantry to be a little bolder.” Ample storage, refrigerator drawers, and a second dishwasher allow the space to function as a workhorse and keep messes out of sight. A successful passion project, indeed! danawolterinteriors.com

TROPICAL SWING

Interior designer Margaret Kaywell’s client sought an office space of a different color. Namely, one that would inspire future ventures, and host friends and associates for work and play alike. He found his answer in a run-down bungalow in West Palm Beach, which Kaywell—in collaboration with MP Design & Architecture and Tim Givens Building & Remodeling—imagined as a sumptuous private clubhouse. Reworking the layout from the studs, Kaywell conceived a gracious foyer with velvet banquettes flanked by a conference-meets-dining room on one side, and a billiards room on the other. The floor plan also includes a private office, powder

FULL HOUSE

Designer Nina Magon faced a unique brief when it came to the media room of a young Houston-based family. “The husband is a serious cards player and wanted a designated place to call his poker room. His wife said, ‘Okay fine, but you need to share it with me and your child!’” So spurred plans for a space that bridges the divide between moody man cave, elegant lounge and kid-friendly play space. “It’s a universally fun room; it works for everything,” notes Magon, pointing to the custom six seat table (the exact headcount for poker night) and adjacent TV area with its wipeable ottoman that rolls away to accommodate a playmat. But the real hero of the space is the custom cabinetry, painted Sherwin-Williams’ Seaworthy, which chicly stashes vestiges of life with a toddler, or a gamesman, as the case may be. ninamagon.com

LAST HURRAH

A family’s early 1800s farmhouse in Litchfield, Connecticut, was a ground-up project—of sorts. Over the course of six years, and led by designer Susan Bednar Long, renovations were tackled phase-by-phase. By the time they set their sights on the unfinished attic, both designer and client had developed a keen sense of what was still missing—a workhorse. On the wish list: A well-appointed office, a gentleman’s lounge for cigar smoking and game nights, a sleep loft for family visits and a bevy of storage. While embracing the original beams and warm wood floors, Long set about modernizing the space with a cozy, masculine mood. Notably, in building out the crooked chimney, she created a stylish built-in

bar-meets-shelving unit wrapped in metallic Hermès wallpaper, which ingeniously serves as a partition between the lounge and office areas. Utilizing every solitary inch (while preserving an airy feel thanks to precisely scaled furnishings), the designer squeezed in a comfy window banquette, an 11-foot-long desk, a flatscreen TV and a sectional. Storage space abounds as well, including the antique home’s original, rehabilitated cubbies that now enclose back-of-house office supplies, camping gear and seasonal storage. “Only the pretty stuff is on view,” notes Long, adding, in the ultimate stamp of approval, “This was never an essential space, but it has become just that.” sblonginteriors.com

THE GAME PLAN To discover the homeowner’s taste, Creative Floors starts by going through images of their past projects to see what speaks to the client. From there, they select three flooring, carpeting or rug options that the client can take home, allowing them to find the perfect fit for their space. If the client wants more personalized advice, Creative Floors offers in-home design consultations. And finally, their team of experts handle every detail of the installation process.

LET’S TALK TREND One of Creative Floors’ most popular client requests is for colorful stair runners. “Although it took a while for this trend to reach the mountains, it’s proven to be an absolute game changer!” Elicker says. “Our clients love them, and when their families and friends see the results, they want to install stair runners too. It’s an elegant accent that enlivens any home.”

Sometimes all it takes is one change to completely refresh a home. This is an ideal that the Creative Floors team abides by. “A new wood floor that complements the existing furniture and paint can update the look and feel of a home without having to completely start over,” says owner Shannon Elicker. Creative Floors offers an exceptional range of wide-plank wood flooring, vinyl plank flooring, carpet and area rugs. And the most exciting part? These products don’t need to be used in the traditional sense. One unique renovation element that is popular right now are reclaimed wood accent walls. “While they don’t require much material, they make a statement that anyone who walks into the home will admire,” Elicker says. When it comes to these types of projects, Creative Floors taps into the creative part of their name to provide unique design solutions that deliver big impact.

T

he property near the Denver Country Club was empty when architect Sarah Broughton first laid eyes on it—but that didn’t stop her and her clients, a music industry professional and a model, from picturing a world of possibilities. “From the start, they wanted something very distinctive,” the architect says of the couple’s plans for their Colorado home. “The idea of a ‘timeless contemporary masterpiece’ kept coming up in our meetings.” As the homeowners are jet-setters—the husband, for one, is an internationally renowned DJ and music producer who is frequently on the road— their taste encompasses countless cultures and styles. So for Broughton, working closely with project architect Rahul Mohare and designer Leslie Cope, the brief called for whipping up a home on par with a high-end hotel, but warmer and more personalized. This led them to go for a contemporary riff on the Prairie style of architecture made popular by Frank Lloyd Wright and prevalent in the Mile High City in the early 20th century. “We always consider the historical context of our projects,” Broughton notes. The resulting house, brought to life by general contractor Cress Carter, emphasizes broad horizontality, flat rooflines and expanses of glass offering a direct connection to the surroundings. And to respond to the lot, which is flat in the front and slopes down to an abutting golf course, the residence embraces multiple outdoor areas, such as the rooftop deck and large back terrace off the lower-level spa and indoor lap pool. The homeowners themselves, and especially the husband’s musical background, soon became another source of inspiration for Broughton and her team. “We strive to understand what drives our clients,” the architect explains. “We studied the way electronic music is made, and what he’s thinking about when he’s creating music.” In the process, they learned about Musical Instrument Digital Interface, or MIDI, a technology which transforms sound into a digital grid of visually represented notes. Varying patterns of MIDI notation informed the offset heights of natural sandstone veneer on the home’s exterior, while, on the roof overhang, bronze fascia panels and

Kebony wood soffit boards complement the palette. Music grids also inspired the custommade walnut-and-steel screens by the home’s entry and in the spa. Such attention to detail set the tone for the interiors, too. “They wanted glam, glam, glam,” recalls Cope. “In every room, whether it had more of a ‘wow’ factor or a serene vibe, we included eye-catching moments.” Throughout the home, sumptuous materials and textures bring a richness to each space. “The spa has gold Brizo showerheads, and gold bases help swivel chairs pop in a lounge area,” the designer notes. Another example is the sourcing of stone for the pair of two-sided fireplaces acting as dividers between the kitchen, living and dining areas. Cope flew to Italy to scout marble for the surrounds. After she tagged a block of beautifully veined Arabescato Orobico Grigio, the homeowners followed with their own visit to approve her selection. Now the slabs read as standalone art. “Our designs tend to be pure and clean, so it’s nice to layer in something this bold,” Broughton comments. And to soften these interiors, Cope designed oversized, velvet-upholstered sofas with swooping curves which, she explains, “draw your eye more serendipitously through the space.” Sight lines through the fireplaces offer a sense of continuity to the rooms, which all connect via LaCantina sliding doors to a sizable terrace with distinct dining and lounging areas. “A hallmark of our design style is open architecture that creates a flow through the house,” Broughton says. “There are multiple ways to enter each space.” Guests can wander through the living room out to the terrace, then slip back inside through the dining room doors. And from there, they might even go on to the wine room to pick up a glass of chilled Chardonnay. The tenets of timeless design matter, insists Broughton, noting that this one-of-a-kind house is nonetheless “rooted in the true elements of proper scale and proportion.” Despite its vast size, the home exudes warmth and comfort. The architect credits the project’s success to a close collaboration between her team and the owners. “They were so good at guiding us in our decisions while still respecting our vision,” the wife concurs. Looking back at this harmonious abode, they all agree that it deserves a standing ovation.

Highlighted in the entryway is an equestrian statue, an heirloom from the Venezuelan residence of the husband’s grandparents. The tribal rug was purchased at Artisan Rug Gallery.

W

hen the well-traveled homeowners of this Denver new build moved in, they brought along some major baggage. Not the emotional type, that is, but a treasure trove of meaningful pieces they’d fallen in love with across the world. The pair alighted in Colorado after five years overseas, living most recently in Venezuela and Japan. “We were coming from Tokyo, where we rented everything and didn’t own any furniture,” the husband says. “But we like to buy things everywhere we go, so we did have art and rugs, plus a few family heirlooms.” Their transition to the Mile High City led the couple to purchase a teardown near the University of Denver. After asking a London-based architect friend to sketch out plans inspired by the husband’s parents’ Miami home, they tapped architect Jim Mitchell to develop the layout and adapt it to the location. The latter added a mudroom, pantry and bar among other reconfigurations, and designed the site plan and three of the façades. And as the framing went up under the eye of general contractor Thomas Becher, the homeowners knew they’d need help to realize interiors capable of highlighting their beloved pieces. “We planned to interview four interior designers,” the wife recalls. “But after speaking with Cassy, that was it—she was the one.” Interior designer Cassy Kicklighter Poole felt similarly. “We just hit it off,” she says. “I like when my clients share my passion and love for design, which they both did.” With that, the project was quickly underway, and the couple’s collections from their travels provided the baseline narrative. “We had to blend a lot of eclectic styles, but we wanted to create a calm, bright and fresh setting that didn’t feel cluttered,” she explains. Kicklighter Poole was careful to craft spaces that complemented but didn’t compete with the couple’s existing collectibles. For example, the entryway features a dramatic sculpture inherited from the husband’s grandparents’ home in Venezuela. The interior designer tapped a local woodworker to craft an accent wall using shou sugi ban—a technique that preserves wood by charring it—alongside a striking backlit slab of veined onyx. “It’s a beautiful backdrop that doesn’t overshadow the art,” she notes of the vignette. The wife first saw shou sugi ban used in Japan and, much like her collection of art and

furnishings, she held onto the idea. Her husband, however, felt unsure about featuring it so prominently. “I wasn’t sold on seeing black wood right as you enter the house,” he explains. “But I decided to trust Cassy and her team. Now, every single guest comments on it when they walk in.” Designing a layout that encourages entertaining and indoor-outdoor living was another must for the homeowners. “The weather is so nice here in Denver, we wanted to take advantage of that,” the wife says, pointing to an expansive 30-foot retractable glass wall in the living-dining room that opens seamlessly out to the deck and garden. They worked with landscape architects Paul Wrona and Aubrey Smith of Elevate By Design for the front and back of the residence, then turned to Paula Ward of Nature Design Studios to create a Japanese garden in a side yard. Kicklighter Poole acknowledged her clients’ love of the great outdoors through a generous use of natural materials. “We offset the home’s linear shapes and hard elements, like stone and metal, with pieces that were more organic and curved,” she explains. “In the dining room, for instance, the chandelier’s organic shape drove the design.” The interior designer also planned for the abode to work well for the couple’s three fur babies. And a happy surprise occurred halfway through the project: the duo learned they were expecting their first child. “This house was designed without any thought of a kid,” the wife admits with a laugh. “Glass staircases, a fireplace with no screen… but we didn’t really change much.” Their son, who is now two, and trio of canines manage the layout quite well. The mudroom—complete with a dog bath—makes washing muddy paws (and little hands) easier, while facilitating gear storage. “They’re a very active family,” Kicklighter Poole observes. “We knew it would be a good idea to get that dog bath in there.” Now that they’ve settled in, the husband shares that they plan on staying for a while—but that doesn’t mean they’re done traveling or collecting unique objets. For her part, Kicklighter Poole loves that the house feels finished, but can always evolve. “We want to create interiors that reflect the people who live there, and spaces that are beautiful, elegant and functional,” she says. “Here, we were able to do just that, thanks to what our clients brought to the table and the trust they put in us.” Mitchell concurs, adding, “This was a team effort with a stunningly beautiful result.”

Rendered in vibrant, bold strokes, the compositions of one mixed-media artist range from abstract to figurative forms.

A

my Metier’s work is progressing well when it feels like she’s “falling right into a piece,” she says. Indeed, the pursuit of immersion resonates throughout the artist’s paintings, collages and prints. Plunging viewers into portals of emotions, colors and movement, her large-scale works are, Metier explains, “human-sized experiences.” Though abstract in style, each piece subtly invokes real-world inspirations, from the floor plans of vast Roman cathedrals to the surreal paintings of Spanish artist Francisco Goya. Hints of representation thus appear, which observers may discern with different levels of perception. “It’s similar to a Rorschach

test,” notes Metier of her more figurative approach to abstraction. “Viewers need something to interact with and interpret.” Indeed, the artist’s process revolves around creating evocative compositions. Riffing off reference images, she first sketches drafts in black and white “to gauge whether a piece has enough contrast.” Then, as she transmutes the drawing into its prismatic form, she photographs her progress and desaturates the image to study its tonal range. For her solo show at the William Havu Gallery in May, Metier turned her eye to the dramatic cliffs of County Mayo, on the picturesque west coast of Ireland. There, she drew inspiration from towering, isolated rock formations called sea stacks, and how their sedimentary layers create “different strands of colors all the way up to the top, revealing ancient geology.” The

artist plays with these striations in her new collage series, in which she incorporates blocks of color alongside reclaimed paper to form her own painterly topography. Throughout her most recent works, Metier’s been attracted to “having things seem a bit off-balance,” she muses. “I love that tension when it looks like it’s about to topple.” And to create paintings that truly envelop their viewer, she favors 5- to 6-foot-tall canvases. As she often works on multiple pieces at once, these vast paintings fill her workspace at the Blue Silo Studios, a converted 19th-century creamery in Denver’s RiNo Art District. When light pours through the factory windows, the artist often feels giddy with possibility. “For me, art has been this wonderful lifelong endeavor,” she says. “It comes down to really learning about yourself as a person.”

Amy Metier (left) often employs large brushes typically made for house painting (opposite) to apply bold, broad swaths of gouache, acrylic and watercolor to her canvases, which can run between 5- and 6-feet tall.

Designed with views and verticality in mind, this Breckenridge family getaway is a fresh take on mountain lodge aesthetics.

CASTLE IN THE SKY

Architecture: Marc Hogan, Bhh Partners, Planners and Architects Interior Design: Lisa Yates, Collective Design Group Home Builder: Chad Rowe, Pinnacle Mountain Homes

F

or one Denver family of highspirited, avid skiers, a coveted lot by Breckenridge Ski Resort became the perfect opportunity to build their dream vacation home. It wasn’t their first foray into Summit County, though. Having built a previous custom house in Breckenridge with Pinnacle Mountain Homes, they were eager to work with the firm again. But given the site’s small size (just a tad under a half-acre) the biggest challenge was finagling a fit for what the homeowners’ desired most: a gathering spot big enough for all three generations of their large family, with room to host friends too. Collaborating on a second property guaranteed a high level of trust between the design team and their clients, which proved key to the project’s success. Architect Marc Hogan, working closely with architectural job captain Tyler Mikolajczak, quickly determined that the only way to go was up. Among other things, the owners asked for six primary bedrooms and two bunk rooms, each kitted out with its own bathroom. Hogan’s solution evolved into a seven-level reverse floor plan, with the main entertaining spaces at the apex, bedroom suites just below, and bunk rooms and a children’s hangout space hugging the ground level. To make the most of the home’s riveting mountainside locale, he added floorto-ceiling windows and two decks, with one right on the rooftop. As part of their wish to entertain large groups, the homeowners aimed to welcome guests at all stages of their lives. The house was therefore designed with accessibility in mind. “They wanted to be able to host absolutely everyone,” notes builder Chad Rowe. Case in point, a glass elevator provides access to all floors while offering panoramic, selfie-worthy rides, and one of the bedroom suites is laid out to meet ADA guidelines. “The shower there is curbless and includes the spatial requirements to accommodate a wheelchair, but you wouldn’t notice any stylistic difference,” says designer Lisa Yates. When it came to the interiors, the couple asked her to push their aesthetic in a “soft modern” direction, she recalls, while keeping

212

the house relaxed, inviting and well connected to its mountainous surroundings. She began with surfaces, choosing white oak flooring and installing reclaimed barnwood at key moments to add texture and interest. The solid walnut interior doors throughout are also “inherently warm and cozy,” says the designer. Cabinetry, tiles and stones were all selected within a limited palette—pops of colors like blue are present but subtle—with recurring elements in varying combinations in the bathrooms, kitchen and wet bar. Yates’ picks reveal a carefully considered balance of contemporary and “mountain” moments: The white oak cabinetry of the bar area has a rustic finish, for example, but its simple flat-panel doors read as contemporary. Likewise, the kitchen’s backsplash features an organic yet modern square tile. In the private quarters, the designer picked standout fabric, wallpaper and grass-cloth wallcoverings to create accents in every bedroom. In the bunk room, barnwood plays the same role. Each has its own distinctive character, she notes, but, “there’s no primary bedroom so, by design, no suite feels significantly more special than the others.” Of course, the house also had to meet the needs of enthusiastic skiers. Its alpine accommodations include a locker room with boot warmers right off the entrance, alongside less obvious choices such as performance upholstery fabrics and a plethora of naturally durable wool rugs. “Everything’s very livable; there’s nothing you can’t touch,” says Yates. “You can walk in with your ski pants on and plop down on the sofa.” And there’s plenty of off-the-slopes gathering spots and cozy nooks, too. A major draw is the two decks, both appointed with hot tubs. One features a fire pit, while the other has an outdoor fireplace to congregate around. The house even includes a refurbished chairlift seat from Arapahoe Basin—an older version from the resort’s famous Pallavicini lift and a piece of Summit County history—that’s been recast as whimsical indoor swing beneath the staircase. These components all add up to what the architect dubs a “magnet house.” Not only does it fit its owners with grace, he explains, “It just attracts your friends and family to it.”

Weathered barnwood and sleek metal furnishings illustrate the “mountain modern” vibe of this custom-built residence in Breckenridge. “We utilized natural materials to reflect the surroundings’ colors,” notes architect Marc Hogan. The hammered-iron console is from Arteriors, the vases and candlesticks hail from Collective Design Group’s showroom and the Varaluz mirror is from Inside Source. Below lies a hand-knotted wood Surya rug.
