Meet Monica Wilcox, the award-winning designer and TV personality who brings her unmistakable design sensibility and turnkey service to the Dallas market through her firm, M. Wilcox Design.

What led you to your profession? My mother was an interior designer, and I am following in her footsteps as a naturally gifted designer. After several years as a top designer with a major design firm, I decided to venture out on my own. Can you share how your firm has evolved? We have really grown our project management systems and outsourced a lot of our business to keep the focus on marketing, events, media, and most importantly, design. How would you describe the personality of your business? Definitely fun, daring, bold, confident and satisfying. Key influences in your work? Fashion, social media, celebrity and travel.

“ Designing a life you love, we strive to create a positive energy and transform the feel of our clients’ homes.” Define ‘good’ design? Creating a design that’s functional, feels like something the client would want, looks like it has been collected over time and travels with a bit of unexpected quirkiness. What is inspiring you now? Going back to clean, classic design inspires me now. With all the chaos in the world, I’m loving neutral palettes for their calm, comforting effect.

THE TURNKEY TOUCH M. Wilcox Design offers a completely turnkey package, handling all aspects of the design process, from concept to completion. With many years of experience, the firm has implemented a proven, streamlined design approach that allows its team to deliver exceptional results, consistently. “We strive to ‘over deliver’ and build friendships in the process,” says CEO Kenyaco Wilcox. “We can also typically do one-day installs depending on the size of the project.”

EDITOR’S LETTER

ZOOM LAND!

Back in June, I was moderating a Zoom meeting when my husband popped into my office to announce that we had a buyer for our house. “We need to look at this new place, pronto!” Lickety-split, we were moving out of the home we have lived in for nearly a decade and into a fab new rental further east and across from the beach. With all this taking place in the midst of Covid, my head was swirling. Like so many, our home has become a safe haven; nearly every hour of every day spent under that roof. As I write this note, it’s day three in our new place and I’m back to Zooming away. Yes, I had that moment of, “Yikes, what have we done?” But, more than ever, I am grateful to have a new home to settle into. I hope that this September/October issue brings you inspiration for your own home and a respite from what’s happening in the world.

ow more than ever, we’re contemplating what comforts bring joy to a home. To that end, designers are all about elements that create tranquility and contentment in private spaces, and found that it’s the simple things—cozy outdoor areas, the feel of soft linens and the play of light on a wall—that truly create happiness. For Brooke and Steve Giannetti, a designer and architect, pleasure can be found in the fresh air. “Connections to the garden are at the heart and soul of what we do,” says Steve. The husband-andwife team lives on a farm in Southern California where they’ve perfected the art of indoor-outdoor living. Their secret lies in making the great outdoors more intimate. “The feeling of being in an open meadow is sometimes not the most relaxing,” explains Steve. “We found that if you can break an alfresco space into loosely defined rooms—using features like a wall, a garden border or a tree—it makes a space feel more inviting and protected.” Their farm is full of examples, such as a seating arrangement placed under the canopy of a heritage oak, a fire pit ringed by a sectional or a table located by a vegetable garden. “Being outside is something we crave all year round,” Brooke says. “Living in nature calms us and brings us into the moment. It is perhaps the best luxury.” In Atlanta, designer Erika Hollinshead Ward finds luxury where the day begins and ends. “Having a bed that’s made with good linens is a treat,” she says. “You may not be able to control what happens in the world, but sleeping with beautiful linens is a joy.” Ward favors bamboo sheets for their sustainability and hand, noting the fabric becomes even softer with washing, and for curtains, she turns to cotton linen. “The weave of a crisp linen makes a great canvas for color and pattern,” she says. “To me, drapery is like art on the wall—and it can elevate and finish a space the same way a good blazer makes an outfit.” Brad Ford, a New York City designer, calls natural light “very healing” and seeks to add as much of it as possible to any dwelling, be it a city apartment or a house in the country. “In a dense metropolis, privacy can be an issue, so we like to add solar shades or sheers on windows,” he says. “These allow you privacy but also an amount of light.” Ford is also known for strategically placing mirrors and furniture with reflective surfaces in a room to amplify the light. When designing a new home, he always advocates for as many windows as possible. “I would live in a glass house if I could,” he says. “I believe there is no better mood enhancer than natural light.” For these design professionals, providing easy indulgences is rewarding. “Many of my clients come home exhausted after a long day,” Ward says. “If I can give them a space that’s tailored to them, and that provides comfort, I am also fulfilled.”

TONE FOR COLOR GURU EVE ASHCRAFT, SUCCESSFUL SCHEMES BOIL DOWN TO INSTINCT. WRITTEN BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT

Eve Ashcraft knows a good palette. A formally trained painter, she earned her stripes as a color specialist for Martha Stewart and today touts an elite moniker—architectural color consultant— lending her expertise to residential homes, cultural institutions, public works projects and corporate branding the world over. Luxe called upon Ashcraft to learn more of her vibrant and innate approach. eveashcraft.com Formative influence. My mother was a painter. We had a yellow living room with fuchsia silk pillows. I would come home from school and she’d say, ‘Grab a brush’—she’d be painting the kitchen cabinets, again. It never occurred to me until I started working with clients that anyone would be afraid of color. Less is best. Fan decks are an instrument of torture. I’ve had clients test 30 colors before calling me. They were probably feeling insecure to begin with, and there’s this internet problem of, ‘I’ll just scroll to the next page and oops, it’s 4 a.m.’ Endless choice can have a negative effect, so I edit and distill my ideas before sharing.

Go-to paint trick. When I want a space to feel calm, one easy tip is to reduce contrast, especially between building components, like the trim, walls and ceiling. Make those elements the same or almost the same color and boundaries will disappear, creating a sense of spaciousness. Golden rule. The more color you have, the more color you can use. It’s like a great party—just jam everyone in there.

LX_COM33_Radar_5MinutesWith.indd 62

“I love using the resources and collections I keep in my studio to build these inspiration boards, either for my own edification or to show clients possibilities,” says Eve Ashcraft of her fantasy color palette.

photo: eve ashcraft.

Artist’s intuition. The only thing I love about getting older is that I’ve developed respect for my instincts. There are moments when I walk into a room and just know. I had clients with this tasteful blue parlor, but there was something sad about it. I said, ‘You’re going to kill me, but this room should be tobacco with cream trim.’ Six months later, I received a love letter about how they never leave it now. That kind of transformation is luxury.

Open DIALOGUE

THREE ARTISANS REFLECT ON THE CREATIVE JOURNEY AND FINDING COMFORT IN THEIR WORK. WRITTEN BY HEATHER CARNEY

RAYMOND BARBEROUSSE Studio PGRB, Miami

Raymond Barberousse’s path from architect to lighting designer is a telling reminder that good things can result from trying times. Shortly after buying a house in 2009, he was laid off from a Chicago architecture firm, leaving him to D.I.Y. much of his home’s furnishings. His sculptural lighting designs caught the eye of an owner of a local decor store, and the rest is history. Today, Barberousse and his wife split their time between Chicago and Miami drawing inspiration from both locales. “Chicago is energetic; Miami is more laid-back,” says the designer. As a member of the Black Artists + Designers Guild, he is an advocate for promoting inclusivity in the design community, but ultimately, he says, “It’s about the work. I want the work to represent itself.”

DENISE MCKENZIE-LEE

Enkee Ceramics, Chicago

“Don’t underestimate me,” says Denise McKenzie-Lee, known for her earthy ceramics layered with texture. Her foray into the medium began with a gift certificate to a pottery class. “I love entertaining, so I wanted to make my own set of dishes,” she recalls. “The instructor said, ‘It’s going to be a long time before you can do that.’ It wasn’t. I’m prolific when I become interested in something.” Her pieces, crafted with porcelain and stoneware, are perfectly imperfect reflecting a gritty sentiment. “I call it rustic modern. I’m attracted to textures: a rusty tray, rocks, rough edges, things that look burnt,” she says. Next up: experimenting with glass and non-functional work. No one is underestimating her now.

ANIKA POITIER

ASP & Company, Los Angeles Anika Poitier’s first love was film. Yet with a child on the way, she says, “I needed a creative outlet that was more kid-friendly.” So Poitier teamed up with her interior designer mother on a textile and accessories line. Their first collection centered on female artists and grew from there. A signature design is an infinity-style serpent. “It symbolizes strength and the journey to empowerment,” says the designer, who employs her filmmaker eye when selecting materials, and is drawn to linen for its transparent and natural qualities. “I love the way light shines through. We all want to exist in a calm, nurturing space.” Today, that notion rings more true than ever.

TALKING SHOP JOYEUX HOME DECOR

Drawing from decades of experience in construction and interior design, Jack and Dy Lynne Dabney are the husband-and-wife team behind San Antonio gem Joyeux Home Decor. Dy Lynne gives us the scoop on the high-end boutique furniture store featuring her expertly curated selection of furnishings and accessories that span all design styles. joyeuxhd.com Tell us what you offer. High-end furniture, lighting, decor and artwork, including five unique upholstery lines with fully customizable options, plus gift items such as candles, jewelry, scarves, perfumes and hand lotions—all from top-tier vendors. Describe your services. We give in-store design advice; help with material selections, furniture plans, 3D digital modeling, in-home consultations and both furniture and accessory installs; and offer an on-approval policy allowing customers to take an item home for up to 24 hours before deciding to purchase—not to mention our complimentary in-store lattes every day and mimosas on the weekends.

ONE & DONE

What are your goals? To bring the newest and brightest in furniture and accessories to San Antonio while staying true to quality, craftsmanship and timeless design, to surprise customers every time they walk in with beautiful and ever-changing vignettes, and to be a place where customers can come to escape the stresses of the day and feel joyeux-ful!

FERN SANTINI

How does Fern Santini Collaborative work? We design, build and furnish a unique home and then host events to not only showcase the team, partners, artisans and artists involved, but also to raise money for our chosen nonprofit. The house is sold fully furnished after completion.

What makes your company unique? Our projects are designdriven. The home is furnished as if the contents were collected and curated over time, with hundreds of hours spent selecting finishes, lighting, furniture and art—and many of the pieces are one-of-akind. It’s a house with attitude.

What inspired this venture? Austin is experiencing phenomenal growth, and several of my clients have sold homes completely furnished, so I realized there was a demand for “move-in ready” homes. It takes several years to develop a custom project—some homeowners love the process and have the time to spend; others don’t.

Tell us about the charitable aspect. Our goal is to raise money for a specific nonprofit while raising awareness for what it does for the community. It’s difficult for the many people moving to Austin to know all the groups that need support. We want to help get the word out. The Austin we believe in is one where we take care of one another.

THE RIVER OAKS ART COLLECTION Artwork takes center stage at The River Oaks luxury high-rise in Houston, with interior and architectural design by Lauren Rottet in collaboration with Andre Landon of EDI International and art consultation by Lea Weingarten of Weingarten Art Group. Rottet designed with art walls in mind, so after acquiring Alex Katz’s silkscreen White Roses from McClain Gallery, she and Weingarten traveled to Art Basel in Miami, securing works by Liliana Porter and Stanley Whitney and further establishing the kind of collection they envisioned. Ultimately, works from both local and national resources grace The River Oaks. “We enjoyed gathering artists both well-known and emerging whose works went together well and enhanced the interiors,” says Rottet. theriveroaks.com

ERIN DONAHUE TICE FINE ART

“I sort of fell into the art world by way of my passion for interiors,” says artist Erin Donahue Tice, the self-taught creator behind Erin Donahue Tice Fine Art in Austin. “I have renovated and decorated three homes now, and art was always a central part of the process.” Fast-forward to today and Tice’s paintings are available not just via her website and by commission but also through shops and galleries across Austin. She draws inspiration from interior design, of course, but also from nature (specifically East Hampton, where she and her family have a vacation home) and old photos of style icons like Jackie Kennedy, Lee Radziwill, Sophia Loren and Grace Kelly. Working on both canvas and paper, the artist uses acrylics as her base, building on mixed-media layers. She tends to use bold splashes of color, layers of texture, various mediums and the definition— and absence of—shapes and spaces to transport the viewer to another place in time, even if that place is abstract. “I would like to continue making art that people connect to,” she says. “To me, that is the biggest honor and compliment: that someone connects with a piece enough to look at it every day and continues to find joy and solace in it.” erindonahuetice.com

DICK CLARK + ASSOCIATES

Moving to a new office space is not something Austin-based Dick Clark + Associates took lightly. “When Dick Clark Architecture moved to the Warehouse District in 1995, Dick was a pioneer of the neighborhood and really helped define it as we know it today,” explains principal partner Mark Vornberg. “Developing this office was a great opportunity for us to have a similar impact on the East 7th Street Corridor.” While maintaining the shell of the two-story structure—previously a pawn shop—the firm incorporated floor-to-ceiling glass windows and a mezzanine and common roof deck above. The resulting 10,310 square feet of interior office space focuses on natural light and adding more collaborative areas and flexibility. “I think Dick would be very proud of the work we accomplished with this building and the next chapter in our life,” Vornberg says. dcarch.com

COLLABORATION LAUREN WILLIAMS ART + HOME X ART + LOOM

Luxe recently caught up with Samantha Gallacher of Art + Loom (below)—who’s also an interior designer with her own firm—to discuss her collaboration with Texas-based Lauren Williams (bottom, right) of Lauren Williams Art & Home on a new bohemian-meets-luxury rug collection, aptly named Lauren Williams Art + Home X Art + Loom. It features five designs, offering clients variations in color and size and an array of fibers and pile heights, adding dimension and texture to mimic Lauren’s 3D Canvas With Movement art installations. artandloom.com How is this collection special? We pulled from one art medium to another. The “stringy” quality made into a flat rug is really unique. We wanted to create a completely new look for rugs and bring fine art to the floor.

SAMANTHA GALLACHER PORTRAIT : ANDY GALLACHER. LAUREN WILLIAMS PORTRAIT : CARLEY PAGE SUMMERS. RUG PHOTOS: COURTESY ART

What’s the process like for customers? They select the style, work with us to provide the other colors in the project, and then a sample is made. Once a sample is approved, the rug goes into full production.

+ LOOM.

What were each of your roles in this collaboration? Lauren would show me various tapestry designs from her collection, which I would translate into different fibers and pile heights, ultimately creating a handknotted rug.

THE WELL-DESIGNED KITCHEN + BATH

Excitement is permeating the kitchen and bath industry—just talk to an expert, and you’ll feel it too. Materials, both new and centuries old, are transcending the ordinary, even the “high-end” rubric; instead, they are interesting, they evoke warmth— they tell a story. The key words are no longer form and function but rather, beauty and technology. Together, these two formerly opposite elements create intimate spaces that are vividly original.

“If you begin at no, you’ll never get to yes.” Words Nancy Epstein has lived and worked by since designing her first piece of furniture more than 20 years ago. “I brought the design to our hometown cabinetmaker and he didn’t like it. I didn’t listen and had him make it anyway, and he was so taken by the results that he asked me to join his company designing products.” Such tenacity eventually led Epstein to found Artistic Tile, where she and her team aim to “make the world a better place … one tile at a time.” Today, her tile empire encompasses eight national showrooms, a cadre of reps working with hundreds of architects, designers and dealers, an engaging website, and 100,000 social media followers. “We are very ‘connected’ to our audience and their preferences, well beyond sales numbers,” she says.

“The gift of the genuine, the real, is the ultimate luxury, so the ultimate kitchen and bath should be outfitted with natural stone.”

MATERIAL MIX: WHAT’S TRENDING IN TILE + Brecciated marble slab. This is an iconic material for Artistic Tile; one Epstein loves so much, she permanently installs it in every new showroom. The color and sense of monumental energy of Breccia Imperiale, Breccia Viola and Arabescato Corchia make them perfect choices for giving visual stature to baths and kitchens. + Glass mosaic. “We love this material in geometric, floral and foliate mosaic designs, in colorful blends, in mirrored mixes and also in tonal white-on-white colorways,” she says. “Lately, we have been creating mosaics with an ombré effect in both kitchens and baths. + Quartzite slabs. The color of these natural stones is breathtaking, and their high resistance to acid etching and low porosity make them especially attractive to those who seek a prep surface that combines real beauty and ease of maintenance.

PUTTING THE SPOTLIGHT ON SURFACES Porcelain. Kitchens are spaces for dinner, homework, lounging, entertaining and more. Homeowners are moving away from granite and toward porcelain for its resistance to stains, costeffectiveness and durability. Wood. Due to the popularity of open-concept floor plans, flooring choices are extending from space to space, like hardwood in the living area that continues into the kitchen. Oak and walnut are the most popular due to their durability. Stone Slabs. A slab backsplash is clean and adds just the right amount of drama to any kitchen.

The word “signature” resonates with Hammerton Lighting on two fronts. On the product side, its decorative lighting line, Hammerton Signature, speaks to the company’s unlimited customization options. Each light in the collection—whether in design, materials, options or craftsmanship—is a “signature” piece. Stylistically speaking, Hammerton’s “signature” is its relationship with nature as reflected in its designs. “Our aesthetic has always involved an exploration of the natural world,” says founder and vice president of design, Levi Wilson. “Filigree, Art Nouveau and Art Deco are great examples of this.” While the standard industry definition for custom lighting assumes a limited choice of options, in Hammerton’s hands “anything is possible”—a credo that has led the bespoke, entrepreneurial spirit of this American company for a quarter of a century.

EMPLOYEE-CENTRIC SUCCESS The “Made in America” ideology may be different for every American manufacturer, but at Hammerton it’s centered around the transformative power of each of its employees. “Every day at Hammerton, we design, engineer, fabricate, finish, pack, ship and service a unique assortment of products that are entirely different than the day before and the day after,” says president Bill Shott. “Fundamentally, we are tackling new problems and embracing new opportunities every hour of every day. We rely on the personal enterprise of each employee—their creativity, inventiveness, resilience, collaboration and problem-solving skills—to do this successfully. Bottom line, we recognize that Hammerton’s most valuable assets walk in and out of our doors daily.” What is more American than an unshakable belief in the power of the individual?

“Comfort and authenticity are foundational elements of today’s ‘luxury’ value proposition.”

VANGUARD FURNITURE vanguardfurniture.com |

vanguardfurniture

Anyone who has ever tried to sew a straight seam, build a cabinet or finish a piece of furniture knows how difficult it is. It requires not only experience and know-how, but creativity and a collaborative mindset. Enter western North Carolina-based Vanguard Furniture, the custom case goods and upholstery furniture maker, whose skilled artisans have elevated furniture production to a fine art. “From material selection to hand-applied, multi-step finishes, every detail is considered,” president Andy Bray says. Offered with endless customization options, Vanguard’s furniture speaks to the American mindset that home is the ultimate form of self-expression. “Each piece of Vanguard furniture reflects the authenticity of a unique material or design sensibility. And yet, each piece is tailored to the distinctive tastes and experiences of its imaginer,” Bray says.

INGENUITY AT ITS FINEST Over the years, Vanguard has innovated with new technologies to improve service. Operational efficiencies allow us to create one-of-a-kind pieces and have them available for delivery in fewer than four weeks. And our new 3D visualizer applies state-of-the-art technology to visualize custom options and finishes on the fly and to rotate and examine your creation from any angle.

CUSTOMIZATION: THE AMERICAN WAY The American spirit is more independent, and as a result, prizes customization. From a design standpoint, products must be scaled and tailored to American sensibilities; those who desire furniture of distinction because they value their independence and individuality. From the production standpoint, the only way to manifest that goal is to do it locally. American manufacturing—especially the way we do it at Vanguard—builds furniture one piece at a time, so that each can be unique.

“At Vanguard, everything we create involves provenance and customization.”

There are certain elements that seem to unite a well-designed kitchen, regardless of style. For Helene Terry, principal of Helene’s Luxury Kitchens, these elements are state-of-the-art equipment, craftsmanship, sound ergonomics and traffic flow. Terry, whose work is guided by a “built-to-last” philosophy, starts a kitchen project with a deep understanding of how the homeowners want to move in their space and how they want the room to feel once the project is complete. She advises those endeavoring in the realm of new kitchen territory to establish a “laundry list” of wants and needs within the kitchen or bath. “Many times, homeowners do not know the mechanics to describe, yet they seem to always know how this room should function and feel; plus when remodeling, they know what needs to be corrected from their existing kitchen or bath,” she says. ASID Dallas has honored Terry’s proven design approach, awarding her “Best Cabinetry/Cabinet Materials” in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

+ S ervo-drive units allow for opening doors and drawers with a single touch and can be incorporated into lift doors, pullout trash units and pullout shelves, to name a few. + S patially savvy, Terry is removing angled peninsulas in kitchen remodels and replacing them with L-shaped layouts with spacious islands. This minimizes traffic flow issues. + T he Galley workstation sink is a kitchen unto itself, with nearly unlimited possibilities for food prep, cooking and entertaining at hand.

Gathering GROUNDS THE MODERN-DAY GREAT ROOM IS ALL ABOUT VERSATILITY. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN

As we take solace in our houses, the kitchen’s role as the heart of the home has become more essential than ever—it’s where we take business calls, help our children with homework, gather for breakfast and evening meals, and enjoy a refreshing cocktail at day’s end. So, it comes as no surprise that blending the kitchen and family room into one great room layout is high on most clients’ wish lists. Today, designers are planning adaptable spaces ideal for prepping meals, breaking bread and intimate socializing, as seen in this stunning project by designer Adam Hunter.

BIG PICTURE

For designer Adam Hunter, this impressive space started as a dream. “I had a vision of an all-metal kitchen in a beautiful patina with a floating marble hood,” he explains. With the help of all-star architect Steve Giannetti, trusting clients and an ace custom cabinetry company, Hunter was lucky enough to see his fantasy come to life. adamhunterinc.com What a room! I wanted to change up my own aesthetic with this project and I certainly reached high. But it really started with doing something unique, which was creating an all-metal kitchen.

How did you decide on the marble hood? We actually had to frame the house so it could support the hood, but I knew we had to go for it! The marble, which my dealers call a pinot noir, has moments of eggplant, burgundy and just the right kind of gold. When it all gleams together at a certain point in the day, it’s magic.

PHOTOS: COURTESY ADAM HUNTER INC.

Talk to us about the cabinetry. Amuneal created some really luxurious textures and colors with stainless steel designs. We sort of invented a patina we’re calling “root beer.” It works so well with some of the other tones and materials found throughout the space. The glass cases flanking the range continue the view out to the backyard—they’re definitely a favorite feature.

GREAT HEIGHTS

To create a soaring space in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, designer Amber Brown Matlack of Brown Interiors knew she wanted to preserve the charm and history of the original 1935 Tudor-style residence when crafting this great room. After combining what was once a galley kitchen, small breakfast nook and dining room into a central area, she extended the ceiling into the attic to achieve a vaulted effect and expose the wooden beam. The warm color scheme evokes a nostalgic feel, including the mauve and gray tones on the cabinetry and a beautiful stone backsplash. Brown Matlack says she aimed for “a sense of openness and livability in the heartbeat of the house.” browninteriors.net

Report WITH WELLNESS TOP OF MIND, LUXE DIVES INTO DESIGN DEVOTED TO REST, CONNECTION AND CLARITY.

WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT

To celebrate the agrarian history of a family’s Bridgehampton property, Historical Concepts and Michael Davis Design & Construction envisioned a structure reminiscent of traditional potato barns in the area. Cedar board-and-batten cladding and masonry details, including Connecticut fieldstone retaining walls and natural bluestone cleft slabs designed in tandem with Hollander Design Landscape Architects, speak to the old-meets-new ethos.

TAKE COMFORT Take care. Stay safe. Be well. Who could have guessed the weight these phrases would take on in this uncharted new decade? Times of introspective nesting have illuminated that such directives start at home, reinvigorating a discussion on the many ways design can enhance our mental and physical wellbeing. Here, we share an assortment of restorative spaces whose principles—thoughtful details, indulgent amenities and ample conversation with nature— provide ideas for sanctuaries large and small.

Knowing that the indoor pool would be used through the colder months, the team nestled the feature in the ground, adding a south-facing skylight. “Between the warmth of the rammed earth and the natural light, it’s a perfect winter pool,” says Historical Concepts principal Kevin Clark. “It doesn’t feel like a cold conservatory.”

Surrounded by tiered rows of apple trees, the sunken Rebound Ace tennis court (right) is maintenance free. The vaulted great room (below) earns its keep as an office space, entertaining area and lounge between tennis matches.

Sweet 1ESCAPE A BRIDGEHAMPTON SPORTS BARN OFFERS THE ULTIMATE FAMILY RETREAT.

“With a remote property, you have the opportunity to create a destination,” says Kevin Clark, principal of Historical Concepts. And so it came to be that a family’s brief for a recreational outbuilding on their Bridgehampton estate evolved into a sports barn laden with wellness features. Surrounded by acres of pristine farmland, the structure demanded a sensitive approach, one that Historical Concepts—an architecture firm known for legacy properties rooted in place— was well-suited for. Alongside interior designer Steven Gambrel, landscape architect Edmund Hollander and master builder Michael Davis, who assembled the team, plans were drawn for a lowslung, cedar-clad activity center softly folded into the rolling terrain. The decision to nestle the barn into, not onto, the landscape is an exercise in both historical accuracy and ingenuity. First, it references semisubterranean potato barns local to the region. Second, it meets a Hamptons building code limiting accessory structures to 20 feet high, while still allowing for a three-story structure for all the family’s amenity wishes to live in harmony. In full, the sprawling retreat includes family offices, a large vaulted great room, a kitchen, an indoor lap pool and spa, men’s and women’s locker rooms and an exercise room—plus a sunken tennis court with viewing pavilion. “The lay of the land and the feel of a place reveal themselves when you put pen to paper,” says Clark. “The top floor gym has a wonderful

LX_COM33_TheLook_TheReport.indd 139

view over the property, and the sauna, steam and massage rooms round out the indoor activities,” shares Davis. “In addition to the gathering room, there is a suite of three family offices particularly helpful during these times.” Throughout, Gambrel’s interiors scheme—a medley of warm woods and chalky blue, green and sand hues—sets a restorative tone. “The palette is muted, based on the environment as inspiration,” he explains, and indeed, the natural setting inspires. Complementing the agrarian landscape, Hollander took care in employing native plantings, such as bayberry, winterberry and viburnum, to welcome birds, bees and other pollinators. “Healthy, living landscapes are essential to the wellness of all visitors, all species,” he notes. Like many affluent New Yorkers, the family decamped to their country residence in the early days of the pandemic. In turn, the beloved barn has become a haven beyond anything client or design team could have planned for—a hub of safety, togetherness and health. “One of the most rewarding parts of our job is when you see a place you designed be truly life-altering for a family,” says Clark, adding, “When you treat home as resort, there’s something magical about that.”

GOODVIBES THREE DESIGNERS SHARE A PRINCIPLE THAT SHAPES THEIR PERSONAL PRACTICE.

LAURENCE CARR

New York, New York Wabi-sabi is a worldview rooted in Japanese origin all about taming desire for perfection in design, freeing us to live more sustainably and impart truly authentic style in our homes. To seek it is to honor the patina and character of our interiors and collected pieces, find harmony with nature, honor simplicity and do away with excess clutter. I help clients seek wabi-sabi through utilization of the seven Zen principles— one of which, for example, is incorporating unique pieces from our clients’ own collections. This practice shifts focus from trendy items to those that have been built lovingly, and with noble materials. Together with our clients, we identify character-rich pieces and intentionally place them in different rooms as the sturdy roots of our interior design approach. laurencecarr.com

MACELLE ALBEDA

Pasadena, California Biophilia stems from Greek as “love of life” and is about our innate human need to be connected to nature. Biophilic design focuses on how to layer nature into interiors, whether through actual elements like

LX_COM33_TheLook_TheReport.indd 140

plants, stone, wood, water and natural light, or “biomimicry,” which are shapes and patterns that remind us of being outdoors. The benefits are substantial: Close proximity to nature triggers a dopamine response in our brains that promotes well-being, lowering blood pressure and stress. Starting from the most basic ways to inspire biophilia, you can paint walls in colors we find in nature, like green, blue and brown. Then move on to adding motifs and plants. Advanced options include stone walls, water features and changing the building’s access to natural light. studiomahal.com

NINA MAGON

Houston, Texas One way of fostering well-being at home that I believe in and have used with great results is Vastu Shastra, an Indian system of architecture similar to feng shui. In Vastu Shastra, there are 5 elements: Earth (Bhumi), Water (Jala), Air (Vayu), Fire (Agni), and Space (Akasha). The central part of a house is ruled by the space element. As all directions meet in the center, it is the holiest and most powerful zone. So when possible, I like to ensure that the most-used room—often the living area—is located in the direct center and designed with a minimal aesthetic for less clutter and low furniture to allow for plenty of natural light. This approach harmonizes the flow of energy throughout the home, which facilitates good health. contourinteriordesign.com

LOST in REVERIE

There are serene rooms and then there are rooms where serenity seems to emanate from the walls, softening your disposition on viewing. This elixir of a bedroom in Jackson Hole, Wyoming—a collaboration between WRJ Design and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson—is decidedly the latter. Here, designer Rush Jenkins and architect Ray Calabro sound off on achieving Zen in tandem. wrjdesign.com; bcj.com Set the scene. RC: The site for the house is on a butte that overlooks the Snake River Valley with extraordinary views. The bedroom is located at the southern, most private end of the home and is embedded into the gentle slope of the site, connecting with the landscape at a more immediate scale. RJ: There’s a calmness and a majestic beauty that surrounds you. That’s what the color palette, the lighting, the simplicity of the design were about—creating harmony with nature. Material connection. RC: The southern wall is smooth-formed cast-in-place concrete, the flooring is white oak with a custom finish, the window wall is aluminum with a clear anodized finish, and the ceiling is composed of panels of white oak. RJ: The rug is bamboo silk, the bed is really luxurious suede, the pillows are a cashmere plaid from Loro Piana. Those tonal elements are about continuity with the exteriors and the architecture. Design highlights. RC: The water feature that stretches along the master suite is dynamic. We placed mirror-finish stainless steel panels on the roof overhang above the stream. The combination of gently moving water and mirror reflects constantly changing patterns of light into the master suite throughout the day. The effect is magical. RJ: The seamless windows in this room actually open from the bottom. Can you imagine waking up hearing the water rippling and the birds chirping in the garden? Sometimes, you’ll see a moose having a drink. You don’t get closer to nature than that. Dream team. RC: WRJ’s selections reinforce the quiet elegance of the home. The luxe finishes and fabrics express their commitment to quality and attention to detail that are guiding principles in the architecture. RJ: This house was a unified vision. The client wanted peace and simplicity, and every team member came at this design from the same philosophy.

Home WORK

Some decamped to dining tables. Others converted spare rooms to studies. In the immediate wake of the pandemic, remote work culture shifted inexorably, and with it, the landscape of home office design. With more and more companies adopting permanently flexible policies, it’s no surprise that designers are seeing an uptick in office updates. On deck? Spaces that foster productivity and focus, certainly—but also tranquility and moodboosting chic. Take a cue from these calming desks around the country.

▲ FRESH PERSPECTIVE In Vero Beach, Florida, designer Kevin Dumais’ unconventional furniture configuration is twofold. First, it makes way for foot traffic between the room’s two entrances. Second, it sets the client up to take advantage of the resplendent views and shifting sunlight throughout the day. dumaisid.com

BETTER TOGETHER With restorative garden views for the taking, designer Bryan Yates aligned a Dallas, Texas, couple’s work areas along a single window wall. The decision has a reverse fishbowl effect: The elegantly minimal design can be conversely enjoyed from the outdoor entertaining spots. yatesdesygn.com

AS TOLD TO GRACE BEULEY HUNT

From the very beginning, it was meant to be a place of rest. The architect picked the location for it’s amazing natural light and we worked with a feng shui master. Building started in September to encourage good luck and prosperity for the home. It was a special brief in that way—there was meaning behind every detail. We’re seeing more and more clients asking for specialty rooms, but these clients—two firstgeneration Chinese sisters—really use this space. After a hard day’s work, they retreat to drink tea together, practice calligraphy and meditate. They wanted to honor their heritage—but to modernize, too. Tea room window treatments are traditionally bamboo; we chose a light grass Conrad shade. The Chilewich rug is textured like a tatami mat and the white-oak furnishings are custom by Chi Wing Lo, a Chinese furniture designer living in Italy. The table has natural stone for water draining and a metal plate for the hot teapot to rest on. In spring, the sisters drink Longjing tea. In summer, jasmine tea paired with red bean pastry. In autumn, black tea with moon cake and in winter, Pu’er tea. They have an incredible collection of ceramic vessels; their most-prized is a Gongfu tea set from Yingge, a town famous for its production of porcelain. It was an inspiring project in that we learned so much from our clients. It also showed us how important it is to have a room dedicated to feeling good in—to feeling happy. We’re now looking to incorporate this principal into more of our designs. sullivandesignstudio.com

SOUS VIDE FOR THE SENSES

EXPLORE THE METHOD BEHIND CHEF-MADE MAGIC

Imagine the smell of a cut of steak that has retained its seasonings like never before; the taste and texture of each slice you bite into, its juices and flavor just as you prefer. A feast for the senses, if ever there was one. This could be your dinner, every evening. Allow us to introduce you to sous vide … the term is French for “under vacuum” and the technique is revolutionary. Vacuum seal your food—spices, marinades and all—and submerge it to cook in water. You can regulate the temperature to within a single degree and the heat will be evenly distributed from start to finish. The result, whether steak or fish, an egg or vegetables, redefines “perfectly cooked.” It used to be that maintaining the condition of the water demanded complexity, with equipment and processes that weren’t suited to the home. But no more. Thanks to Signature Kitchen Suite, this method is now yours to experience on the daily. Bathe your steak to its best quality ever, and then give it a little charring on the cooktop— all using one, first-of-its-kind range. Everything you need is right on your cooktop, with no extra tools or equipment required.

TO PROTECT AND SERVE DO YOUR WINE THE HONOR OF CAREFUL KEEPING

From growing, harvesting and crushing the grapes to aging and bottling the resulting libation, so much effort and attention is devoted to the careful art of winemaking. The same level of thoughtfulness should be given to its next phase, no? Signature Kitchen Suite thinks the answer is certainly yes, and that’s why they collaborated with the world’s most knowledgeable vintners, historians and scientists to develop wine refrigerators qualified for their occupants.

Independent temperature zones enable one to organize red, white and sparkling varieties according to their needs; an inverted linear compressor and a metal interior minimize vibration to less than 2 gal (cm/s2); dark-tinted, triple-paned glass protects from UV; and evaporators maintain steady humidity levels. It’s the most ideal wine storage system, ever.

GUIDE TO THE GRAZING BOARD

Ah, the grazing board. It can be an after-school snack plate, elegant party hors d’oeuvre or individual meal. Delicious and aesthetically pleasing, this display of abundance is perfect for foodies of any age and in every setting. It’s a culinary staple. Given the nature of its ingredients, a grazing board demands a lot from one’s refrigerator. Meats should be quite a bit chillier than fruits and veggies, for example, and most of it can’t sit out for too long once you’ve put your spread together. Signature Kitchen Suite’s 24-inch and 30-inch Integrated Column Refrigerators prove the ultimate partner. Their Lift and Go™ bins and drawers offer a variety of places to customize storage conditions to the needs of specific foods, while a movable snack drawer is expansive enough to house extra-large serving platters. Let’s go to the market.

Find your canvas. We think wood boards make for beautiful backgrounds, but any traylike surface will do.

Decide on your must-haves. What are your favorite cheeses? Are you obsessed with olives? Or is red pepper jelly your jam (pun intended)?

Start pairing. Choose more foods with your first picks in mind and be intuitive about it. Just because something isn’t a conventional match, doesn’t mean you can’t include it. Trust your gut, as they say.

Slice, dice + roll! Get creative with presentation; think brie triangles and cheddar chunks, pepperoni chips and rolled prosciutto.

Top it off with extra flavor. Nestle dipping bowls into spaces around the board and fill them with yummy condiments (this can also be a great place for items that give off liquid you want to contain, like olives and pickles).

THE COLLECTIVE Born and raised in the South, interior designer Sarah Hargrave brings the charming sensibilities of her upbringing to every project. Beautiful table settings, flower arrangements, textiles, antiques, and all things color have become hallmarks of her work, which graces residences in and around Dallas, and outside Texas. Her firm, The Collective, speaks to Hargrave’s extensive background in design, building and construction, offering clients turnkey capabilities and a stress-free design. “The initial discovery process with clients is the true source of my inspiration,” she says. Born with a passion for vintage furniture, Hargrave opened the retail storefront side of her business in 2017, which has become her greatest advertisement. “Oftentimes, clients come in and want an entire room just the way it is styled in the window,” she says.

T

he vibrant design of this new Houston home was a watershed moment for the client, who had collaborated with designer Jennifer Martinez several times previously but always felt more comfortable taking the safe route. “This family is really social and fun,” says Martinez, having watched the brood expand to an energetic tribe of six since first meeting them in 2009. “They’re the kind of people who love to have parties—and if she could cover every single thing they own in animal print, she would.” This time around, the wife came closer to doing that than ever before. “In the past, I was nervous and always went with the safe choice,” she says. “But over time, I became much more confident in knowing that if the home’s bones are traditional, then other things like paint and wallpaper can be changed.” That new mindset guided her down a more adventurous path for this project. “She wasn’t afraid to commit to something she may not like down the line,” explains Martinez. “Instead, she would say, ‘I like it now so let’s do it—and if we want to change it later, we can.’”

LX_TX66_HOM_Martinez_Houston_12.indd 211

From the outside, the house gives nary a hint of the unexpected colors and patterns awaiting behind its tidy Georgian façade, which was brought to life by architect W. Travis Mattingly with the help of builder Brian Thompson and his director of construction Chris Thelen. “That was the husband’s only request,” Martinez says. “He wanted a sophisticated and traditional red-brick house.” To prevent a jarring contrast between exterior and interior, plenty of classical architectural details exist inside the front doors, including a sweeping staircase, wide-plank engineeredwood floors and elaborate crown moldings. Martinez also brought in some European antiques with elegant lines. “Obviously, this is a new house—and we weren’t trying to fool anyone that it’s been here for 100 years,” she notes. “But we still wanted to give some nods to the past.” Even the dining room wallpaper honors tradition with its English garden-meets-chinoiserie motif. But its dominant bold turquoise color is anything but prim, especially when set off by dining chairs upholstered in an eye-popping tiger print. That wallpaper along with the entry’s James Conaway

A sweeping staircase greets guests in the grand entry, furnished with an early 19thcentury Swedish canapé upholstered in Pierre Frey paired with a painting by artist James Conaway selected by art consultant Liz Anders.

A quartet of custom chairs upholstered in Black Edition Lombardo velvet in Vermillion and a custom sofa upholstered in Clarence House Vermeer linen velvet in Dijon set the family room’s palette. A cockatoo portrait by photographer Randal Ford enlivens the crisp white walls.

painting selected with help from art consultant Liz Anders of Liz Anders & Associates “were the jumping-off points for the entire downstairs,” Martinez says. The designer brought the paper’s turquoise hue onto the lacquered cabinetry in the adjacent butler’s pantry. And in the living room, she translated its warm tones into an earthy wall color—a rich terra-cotta hue with a finish so glossy “you can practically see your reflection in it,” Martinez notes—while repeating its cooler tones in a green velvet sofa and pair of custom, channel-tufted banquettes covered in turquoise vinyl. The kitchen features yet another striking wallcovering, this one emblazoned with frolicking monkeys and tropical birds custom-printed on a durable commercial-grade paper that surrounds a cobalt-blue Lacanche range. “At first, I wasn’t sure about it,” the client says of the exotic pattern. “But I am so glad we went with it because it is such a fun print and fits our family.” That exuberance continues in the adjacent family room featuring Technicolor velvet upholstery and bird portraits by photographer Randal Ford, and even in the office down the hall showcasing floor-to-ceiling cabinets sporting a sunny yellow finish and walls papered with a colorful pattern of haphazard brushstrokes. On the second floor, which accommodates all of the home’s six bedrooms, Martinez encouraged her client to take her derring-do a step further—onto the floors and ceilings. To that end, a faux-bois carpet and cloisonné-esque floral wallcovering transform the master suite’s dressing room into a moody jewel box. In one daughter’s bedroom, a sassy lip pattern enlivens the window treatments, walls and ceiling. For the son’s bedroom, Martinez chose classic navy-and-white stripes for the ceiling and a blue antelope-print carpet. And for the youngest daughter, she created a bedroom and bath awash in bubble-gum pink. “There’s nothing subtle about it,” Martinez says. “You have to love pink if you live in this room.” And so it seems even the children of the house have embraced their mother’s daring new approach to interior design. “At the beginning, I had no idea what my vision was or that I even had one—but Jennifer helped me figure out my own style,” the wife explains. “She pushes me when need be and I love the risks we took.”

T

he whole point of building a house is to embark on a journey you’ve never been on before,” says the owner of this Austin residence several years after beginning just such an adventure with her husband. The couple envisioned a clean and modern exterior, with inviting and organic interiors holding artifacts from their travels—all while tying in the outdoors with plentiful natural light. In their current role as philanthropists, they also needed a backdrop for fundraisers benefiting a long list of social and environmental causes. “We were building a house to live in but also a place to share and pay it forward,” she adds. Not surprisingly, a layout that could accommodate guests was on the list of asks they presented to architect Juan Miró, joined by principal Miguel Rivera and project manager Nate Schneider. Glass on both sides capturing the city views and framing the many trees populating the 1.7 acres also topped their requests. And the husband, a California native and fan of Richard Neutra’s iconic midcentury masterpiece, the Kaufmann House, wanted a structure in keeping with the simplicity of that design: “Nothing showy and no big, bulky roofs,” he explains. The low-profile structure Miró delivered acknowledged his predecessor. “The sense of lightness and connection to the outdoors was inspired by Neutra,” explains Miró, who designed a roof featuring a thin, sloping plane with curving edges that, together with the berm built in front, creates the appearance of a single floor. “The single slope coincides with the sight line from the street, so the house minimizes its presence from the street because there is no visible roof,” explains the architect. “Seeing big roofs is something the husband doesn’t like, and we took that to heart—it’s invisible but not flat and it slopes, opening to the view in the back.”

Inside, the entertaining requirements were met with a commodious entry connected to a series of carefully delineated spaces within the loft-like setting. A floating fireplace, for example, separates the living and dining rooms, the latter located down several steps, while open sight lines make all the spaces feel related. “There are no bottlenecks,” notes the architect, who introduced American white-oak ceilings and European oak floors as counterpoints to the miles of fenestration. “People associate wood with warmth and it provides an acoustic balance for the glass,” he adds. All the while, general contractor Joe Pinnelli and his project manager Ray Moore ensured precision craftsmanship, tending to details like aligning every light fixture with the ceiling slats.

LX_TX66_HOM_Cravotta_Austin_12.indd 225

Designer Mark Cravotta, with his project lead Amy Ulmer, sought a sweet spot between the home’s sleek architecture and the wife’s desire for pattern and texture. In the living room, soft elements like the unstructured sofa and the organic forms of the Vincenzo De Cotiis coffee table open the dialogue, while in the dining room Africaninspired upholstery on the chairs and a ceramic chandelier reminiscent of a ceremonial headdress continue the conversation. “She has a passion for African causes,” the designer remarks. A former ceramicist and jewelry maker, Cravotta also brought an artistic sensibility. “Because this is a steel and glass house with relatively little wall space, the architectural details and furnishings help express art throughout,” he explains,

The architectural progression of the house reaches its grand finale on the pool terrace, where Hample Pools & Service installed the curved negative edge pool also designed by Miró Rivera Architects. The deck is clad in Lueders limestone from Continental Cut Stone, while white oak appears on the underside of the planar roof to match the interior wood ceilings.

pointing to the entry console by sculptor Ingrid Donat with a bespoke Windsor-style bench and a metal screen just beyond. “The entry wall was originally solid but the owners really wanted guests to see the spectacular view,” adds Cravotta. “The idea for a transparent room divider was introduced and I knew French artist Christophe Côme was the one to make it.” From there, artistic moments abound. In the reading room, a burl wood light fixture with gold-leaf interiors casts a warm glow on hand-painted silk wallpaper, while a wallcovering of tree bark interlaced with gold lurex makes a distinctive mark in the guest room. Moroccan-inspired tile backing vanities composed of Texas sinker cypress raises the bar in the master bathroom, and reclaimed Welsh roof tiles hand painted with botanical motifs set a new standard for wow factors in the master bedroom. “With her love of traditional botanicals, this seemed like a perfect way to incorporate them in a sophisticated and original style,” Cravotta says. Upon completion of the project, the homeowners celebrated their latest journey’s end with a 30th wedding anniversary party. Recalling their life partnership and backgrounds in journalism and photojournalism, the husband reflects, “We always collaborated on words and pictures together and now a house. We enjoy storytelling and this is our story.”

Generation NEXT SAVVY UPDATES TRANSFORM A DALLAS HOUSE JUST IN TIME FOR THE FAMILY’S NEW PHASE. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL PHOTOGRAPHY BY NATHAN SCHRODER

Y

ears ago, a Dallas couple bought a Highland Park residence where they raised their children, hosted events and celebrated holidays. But two decades later, their needs had changed, so they decided to renovate— and it couldn’t have happened at a more auspicious time. During the course of the project, both the couple’s children got engaged, imbuing the redesign with an even greater sense of purpose and joy. It became more than a renovation—the house was being readied to greet this family’s next generation. “It made more sense to invest in our home,” recalls the wife. “We’d done some cosmetic remodeling, but it was time to make a complete change for it to be worth the effort.” Certain areas of the house simply weren’t utilized, so residential designer Daniel Heath helped reconfigure the layout to make it feel larger without changing the footprint. “It was a case of space either wasted or not organized as well as it could be for the clients and the way they lived,” Heath explains. With builder Brad Ellerman also onboard, Heath first set his sights on the second floor, doubling the size of the master suite by joining it to the guest flat above the garage to form sizable master closets for the couple. He also repositioned a door in their bedroom to access a porch he screened in for catching the breeze on cool days. “Our client simply never had the chance to make this house her own,” says Heath. With the upstairs sorted, he turned his attention downstairs, transforming an awkward bar area joining the living room, kitchen and dining room into an oval vestibule for improved circulation, especially during parties. Heath also installed a glass-and-iron laylight in the two-story entry’s ceiling and reimagined a pool bath

off the family room as a powder bathroom and a proper bar now in better proximity to the veranda. For the interiors, the couple turned to designer Josh Pickering. As with the architectural plan, Pickering showcased expertise at working with existing elements by incorporating a few of the clients’ best furnishings—while upgrading everything else along the way. “We brought in many antiques, new items and custom pieces,” says the designer, who masterfully reimagined those items he did opt to keep. Near the living room fireplace, for example, he added four swivel chairs in place of two sofas, redesigning each sofa frame for use in an adjacent seating area and the master bedroom. “Instead of throwing away, I like to refurbish when things have merit,” he explains. “It gives me something personal to the client to build from.” That goal was also top of mind upstairs in the master suite. “There was a four-poster bed with a heavy canopy, and I decided to keep the bed but get rid of the canopy because it sat so low,” he recalls. “We had new finials made in a neoclassical style and added the bed curtain, which dressed up yet simplified the look while giving it more height.” Similarly clever maneuvers dot the rest of the house. In the family room, for example, Pickering installed a wall of vintage giltwood brackets, topping them with more contemporary pottery by Ryan J. Greenheck for juxtaposition. And when unable to find a chandelier with the right scale and proportion for the living room, Pickering custom-designed his own iron fixture with a mix of silvered crystals and rock crystal elements. “We searched for a long time but couldn’t find what we needed,” recalls the wife. “So Josh took several elements we both liked and created one that’s absolutely stunning.” Pickering flexed his ingenuity elsewhere by lacquering the new bar a glossy blue, adding mahogany countertops for a surprise touch; floating bathroom vanity mirrors in front of windows; and updating a utilitarian basement wine storage area with built-in storage and old-fashioned picture lights to illuminate the bays. “This is a classic house but with modern, urbane moments,” he says. And throughout the residence, the designer followed a crisp and clear color story of soft blues and warm whites making the home feel awake and refreshed. “Renovating or redecorating helps build up optimism,” Pickering explains. “The clients love the interiors now and are excited about this new phase in their lives.” And when asked if the house feels like a better fit, the wife responds in the affirmative. “It’s more comfortable to be in,” she notes of her home with no more squandered space. “Every room is my favorite.”
