EDITOR’S LETTER
ZOOM LAND!
Back in June, I was moderating a Zoom meeting when my husband popped into my office to announce that we had a buyer for our house. “We need to look at this new place, pronto!” Lickety-split, we were moving out of the home we have lived in for nearly a decade and into a fab new rental further east and across from the beach. With all this taking place in the midst of Covid, my head was swirling. Like so many, our home has become a safe haven; nearly every hour of every day spent under that roof. As I write this note, it’s day three in our new place and I’m back to Zooming away. Yes, I had that moment of, “Yikes, what have we done?” But, more than ever, I am grateful to have a new home to settle into. I hope that this September/October issue brings you inspiration for your own home and a respite from what’s happening in the world.

ow more than ever, we’re contemplating what comforts bring joy to a home. To that end, designers are all about elements that create tranquility and contentment in private spaces, and found that it’s the simple things—cozy outdoor areas, the feel of soft linens and the play of light on a wall—that truly create happiness. For Brooke and Steve Giannetti, a designer and architect, pleasure can be found in the fresh air. “Connections to the garden are at the heart and soul of what we do,” says Steve. The husband-andwife team lives on a farm in Southern California where they’ve perfected the art of indoor-outdoor living. Their secret lies in making the great outdoors more intimate. “The feeling of being in an open meadow is sometimes not the most relaxing,” explains Steve. “We found that if you can break an alfresco space into loosely defined rooms—using features like a wall, a garden border or a tree—it makes a space feel more inviting and protected.” Their farm is full of examples, such as a seating arrangement placed under the canopy of a heritage oak, a fire pit ringed by a sectional or a table located by a vegetable garden. “Being outside is something we crave all year round,” Brooke says. “Living in nature calms us and brings us into the moment. It is perhaps the best luxury.” In Atlanta, designer Erika Hollinshead Ward finds luxury where the day begins and ends. “Having a bed that’s made with good linens is a treat,” she says. “You may not be able to control what happens in the world, but sleeping with beautiful linens is a joy.” Ward favors bamboo sheets for their sustainability and hand, noting the fabric becomes even softer with washing, and for curtains, she turns to cotton linen. “The weave of a crisp linen makes a great canvas for color and pattern,” she says. “To me, drapery is like art on the wall—and it can elevate and finish a space the same way a good blazer makes an outfit.” Brad Ford, a New York City designer, calls natural light “very healing” and seeks to add as much of it as possible to any dwelling, be it a city apartment or a house in the country. “In a dense metropolis, privacy can be an issue, so we like to add solar shades or sheers on windows,” he says. “These allow you privacy but also an amount of light.” Ford is also known for strategically placing mirrors and furniture with reflective surfaces in a room to amplify the light. When designing a new home, he always advocates for as many windows as possible. “I would live in a glass house if I could,” he says. “I believe there is no better mood enhancer than natural light.” For these design professionals, providing easy indulgences is rewarding. “Many of my clients come home exhausted after a long day,” Ward says. “If I can give them a space that’s tailored to them, and that provides comfort, I am also fulfilled.”

A formally trained painter, she earned her stripes as a color specialist for Martha Stewart and today touts an elite moniker—architectural color consultant— lending her expertise to residential homes, cultural institutions, public works projects and corporate branding the world over. Luxe called upon Ashcraft to learn more of her vibrant and innate approach. eveashcraft.com Formative influence. My mother was a painter. We had a yellow living room with fuchsia silk pillows. I would come home from school and she’d say, ‘Grab a brush’—she’d be painting the kitchen cabinets, again. It never occurred to me until I started working with clients that anyone would be afraid of color. Less is best. Fan decks are an instrument of torture. I’ve had clients test 30 colors before calling me. They were probably feeling insecure to begin with, and there’s this internet problem of, ‘I’ll just scroll to the next page and oops, it’s 4 a.m.’ Endless choice can have a negative effect, so I edit and distill my ideas before sharing.
Go-to paint trick. When I want a space to feel calm, one easy tip is to reduce contrast, especially between building components, like the trim, walls and ceiling. Make those elements the same or almost the same color and boundaries will disappear, creating a sense of spaciousness. Golden rule. The more color you have, the more color you can use. It’s like a great party—just jam everyone in there.

“I love using the resources and collections I keep in my studio to build these inspiration boards, either for my own edification or to show clients possibilities,” says Eve Ashcraft of her fantasy color palette.

Artist’s intuition. The only thing I love about getting older is that I’ve developed respect for my instincts. There are moments when I walk into a room and just know. I had clients with this tasteful blue parlor, but there was something sad about it. I said, ‘You’re going to kill me, but this room should be tobacco with cream trim.’ Six months later, I received a love letter about how they never leave it now. That kind of transformation is luxury.

Open DIALOGUE
THREE ARTISANS REFLECT ON THE CREATIVE JOURNEY AND FINDING COMFORT IN THEIR WORK. WRITTEN BY HEATHER CARNEY
RAYMOND BARBEROUSSE Studio PGRB, Miami
Raymond Barberousse’s path from architect to lighting designer is a telling reminder that good things can result from trying times. Shortly after buying a house in 2009, he was laid off from a Chicago architecture firm, leaving him to D.I.Y. much of his home’s furnishings. His sculptural lighting designs caught the eye of an owner of a local decor store, and the rest is history. Today, Barberousse and his wife split their time between Chicago and Miami drawing inspiration from both locales. “Chicago is energetic; Miami is more laid-back,” says the designer. As a member of the Black Artists + Designers Guild, he is an advocate for promoting inclusivity in the design community, but ultimately, he says, “It’s about the work. I want the work to represent itself.”
DENISE MCKENZIE-LEE
Enkee Ceramics, Chicago
“Don’t underestimate me,” says Denise McKenzie-Lee, known for her earthy ceramics layered with texture. Her foray into the medium began with a gift certificate to a pottery class. “I love entertaining, so I wanted to make my own set of dishes,” she recalls. “The instructor said, ‘It’s going to be a long time before you can do that.’ It wasn’t. I’m prolific when I become interested in something.” Her pieces, crafted with porcelain and stoneware, are perfectly imperfect reflecting a gritty sentiment. “I call it rustic modern. I’m attracted to textures: a rusty tray, rocks, rough edges, things that look burnt,” she says. Next up: experimenting with glass and non-functional work. No one is underestimating her now.
ANIKA POITIER
ASP & Company, Los Angeles Anika Poitier’s first love was film. Yet with a child on the way, she says, “I needed a creative outlet that was more kid-friendly.” So Poitier teamed up with her interior designer mother on a textile and accessories line. Their first collection centered on female artists and grew from there. A signature design is an infinity-style serpent. “It symbolizes strength and the journey to empowerment,” says the designer, who employs her filmmaker eye when selecting materials, and is drawn to linen for its transparent and natural qualities. “I love the way light shines through. We all want to exist in a calm, nurturing space.” Today, that notion rings more true than ever.

COLLABORATION GINNY MACDONALD X LULU AND GEORGIA
Interior designer Ginny Macdonald has joined forces with Lulu and Georgia to debut its first furniture collection, a mix of tailored and statement pieces inspired by Macdonald’s English heritage. Here, Macdonald shares the story behind the line. luluandgeorgia.com What inspired the collection? I’ve worked with the company’s founder, Sara Sugarman, for years now—most recently on her new home in Los Angeles, for which we designed two sofas and her bed. Once they were installed, we knew we wanted to do something bigger. Describe the look. Timeless, not one particular style. Something you’d see in a Victorian London house or a modern California home. What’s been the best part? I love to learn new things, so the most fun part for me was the manufacturing process. The collection is crafted in Los Angeles, so I was able to ensure that every piece was designed to be comfortable. Are there specific pieces from the line in your own home? I have the Belmont chair in Paprika, the Rivington sofa in Stripe and the Ambleside bed in Dark Blue. The Belmont chair has been my favorite since I’m currently working from home. It’s a great place to sit and take calls or have my morning tea while planning my day.
LIGHT MINDED GERALD OLESKER
What’s the core ingredient to ADG’s success? Our passion. Lighting is a functional detail that’s part of the architecture, so we address projects not by what we want to do, but by what the house is asking for. Tell us about your creative process. We have a dialogue with our clients. We pull out pens and have dueling sketch pads. “Is this what you’re thinking? Or this?” In that moment, we’re speaking the same language. Or sometimes I’ll be driving between 66 / luxesource.com

Gerald Olesker, founder of bespoke lighting manufacturer ADG Lighting, has long been a secret source for the design industry, but now it’s his time to shine. Having crafted one-off pieces for some 2,000 projects worldwide, the commissions just keep coming. Luxe asked Olesker to reveal the company’s secret to success. adglighting.com jobs, see something, and pull over and start scribbling. I keep a sketchbook in the armrest! Why does handmade matter? Where’s the romance if you just order out of a catalog? If you want something unique, let artisans engage with architects and designers to create it. We have the skills and the desire. A commissioned piece doesn’t necessarily take a lot of money, but it takes the right person to want it. No one does what we do the way that we do it. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL

WHAT: Brodin oversees all elements: architecture, interior design and landscaping, melding luxury and ease with an emphasis on tailored forms. WHY: He shares all aspects of his practice online, from drawings to presentation trays to installation photos.
LAUNCH
IN HIS OWN WORDS: “Instagram is an amazing platform for us because we’re able to showcase the style and mood we aim to achieve for each project. Our followers are able to get a better idea of our aesthetic through beautiful images meticulously organized in a complementary way.”
Clay McLaurin Studio has much to celebrate. This spring the fabric company launched its latest collection, Conversations with Silence, a group of patterned textiles inspired by a trip founders Clay McLaurin and Todd Piercy took to a 12th-century Cistercian monastery in Spain. Its cloisters’ tracery, gothic columns and brickwork made an impression on McLaurin (below, right, with Piercy), who translated the shapes into three patterns and 11 colorways. This September, the duo also fetes their one-year anniversary as the owners of venerable LA Mills in downtown Los Angeles, where they now reside. The mill, which has been in production since 1964, continues to manufacture luxury textiles for esteemed brands such as Kravet, Holly Hunt and Schumacher, among others, and now also produces McLaurin’s designs. “There’s cachet to boutique fabric lines. There’s honesty about where things are made, how we source, our footprint,” says McLaurin. “But to be a manufacturer right now, you have to think differently. We want to create a synergy and treat our employees fairly. We’re makers, and together, the sky’s the limit.” claymclaurin.com
OPEN HOUSE SHOPS + SHOWROOMS
Michael S. Smith has relocated his Jasper showroom to the Pacific Design Center. Among the new offerings are handmade carpets from Orley Shabahang, who made Jasper its sole West Coast outpost. Designer Chad Dorsey launched a line of bespoke fireplaces (shown) called Strike. The designs come in a range of stone options. L.A. firm Proem Studio is bringing its low-key cool to the desert with a full-service Palm Springs office opening in October. Also debuting this fall is the Ross Vincent Design Collection, featuring plush seating and beds inspired by Vincent’s creations for his luxury residential and hotel projects. And two L.A. designers have debuted online shops. Le Marché from Montreal native Carole Carr offers furnishings and decorative items from around the globe. Plus, Donna Livingston’s Home Décor by Donna carries a broad range of household goods.

THREE NEW BOOKS SHINE A KLIEG LIGHT ON CALIFORNIA DESIGNERS WHOSE WORK IS NOW INTRINSICALLY LINKED WITH HOLLYWOOD.
▲ Designing Hollywood Homes: Movie Houses “I think he sees things cinematically, which brings a sense of narrative and drama to his work,” writes Diane Keaton in her foreword to designer Stephen Shadley’s first comprehensive monograph. The longtime friends have collaborated on numerous houses, several of which appear in the book, which is an ode to Shadley’s talent for creating homes with unparalleled allure—a skill he honed as a scenic artist for 20th Century Fox. But it is the epilogue that truly delights: a look at Shadley’s home, Potic Castle in the Catskill Mountains, which he describes as “a veritable guidebook of my travels.” rizzoliusa.com
▲ Golden Light: The Interior Design of Nickey Kehoe Todd Nickey and Amy Kehoe have had a devoted following since opening their Los Angeles studio and boutique in 2004. Their approach to design, which has attracted notable clients like Natalie Portman, is one of insatiable curiosity, and as they write in the foreword, “We are inspired by the everyday and the extraordinary…from minimal to maximal, quiet to baroque, but the real grandeur is in that ephemeral feeling that a space evokes.” The book tours homes they’ve created in Pasadena, Venice, Malibu and more, each displaying the firm’s “studied but unfussy” style. rizzoliusa.com
▲ A Tale of Interiors Design partners Louisa Pierce and Emily Ward are firm believers in storytelling and “the art of more,” an approach to decorating that naturally leads to a visually indulgent book. Its pages show many of their A-List clients’ homes, of course—Josh Brolin’s love of wallpaper might surprise you—but interspersed are charming antique patterns and illustrations that give it the feel of a vintage scrapbook, perhaps one found at any of the estate sales they frequent. Also throughout are tips, advice and insights. It’s a celebration of organized abundance and personal style, with more than a dash of humor. rizzoliusa.com

THE WELL-DESIGNED KITCHEN + BATH
Excitement is permeating the kitchen and bath industry—just talk to an expert, and you’ll feel it too. Materials, both new and centuries old, are transcending the ordinary, even the “high-end” rubric; instead, they are interesting, they evoke warmth— they tell a story. The key words are no longer form and function but rather, beauty and technology. Together, these two formerly opposite elements create intimate spaces that are vividly original.

“If you begin at no, you’ll never get to yes.” Words Nancy Epstein has lived and worked by since designing her first piece of furniture more than 20 years ago. “I brought the design to our hometown cabinetmaker and he didn’t like it. I didn’t listen and had him make it anyway, and he was so taken by the results that he asked me to join his company designing products.” Such tenacity eventually led Epstein to found Artistic Tile, where she and her team aim to “make the world a better place … one tile at a time.” Today, her tile empire encompasses eight national showrooms, a cadre of reps working with hundreds of architects, designers and dealers, an engaging website, and 100,000 social media followers. “We are very ‘connected’ to our audience and their preferences, well beyond sales numbers,” she says.
“The gift of the genuine, the real, is the ultimate luxury, so the ultimate kitchen and bath should be outfitted with natural stone.”
MATERIAL MIX: WHAT’S TRENDING IN TILE + Brecciated marble slab. This is an iconic material for Artistic Tile; one Epstein loves so much, she permanently installs it in every new showroom. The color and sense of monumental energy of Breccia Imperiale, Breccia Viola and Arabescato Corchia make them perfect choices for giving visual stature to baths and kitchens. + Glass mosaic. “We love this material in geometric, floral and foliate mosaic designs, in colorful blends, in mirrored mixes and also in tonal white-on-white colorways,” she says. “Lately, we have been creating mosaics with an ombré effect in both kitchens and baths. + Quartzite slabs. The color of these natural stones is breathtaking, and their high resistance to acid etching and low porosity make them especially attractive to those who seek a prep surface that combines real beauty and ease of maintenance.

Homeowners are moving away from granite and toward porcelain for its resistance to stains, costeffectiveness and durability. Wood. Due to the popularity of open-concept floor plans, flooring choices are extending from space to space, like hardwood in the living area that continues into the kitchen. The word “signature” resonates with Hammerton Lighting on two fronts. On the product side, its decorative lighting line, Hammerton Signature, speaks to the company’s unlimited customization options. Each light in the collection—whether in design, materials, options or craftsmanship—is a “signature” piece. Stylistically speaking, Hammerton’s “signature” is its relationship with nature as reflected in its designs. “Our aesthetic has always involved an exploration of the natural world,” says founder and vice president of design, Levi Wilson. “Filigree, Art Nouveau and Art Deco are great examples of this.” While the standard industry definition for custom lighting assumes a limited choice of options, in Hammerton’s hands “anything is possible”—a credo that has led the bespoke, entrepreneurial spirit of this American company for a quarter of a century.

EMPLOYEE-CENTRIC SUCCESS The “Made in America” ideology may be different for every American manufacturer, but at Hammerton it’s centered around the transformative power of each of its employees. “Every day at Hammerton, we design, engineer, fabricate, finish, pack, ship and service a unique assortment of products that are entirely different than the day before and the day after,” says president Bill Shott. “Fundamentally, we are tackling new problems and embracing new opportunities every hour of every day. We rely on the personal enterprise of each employee—their creativity, inventiveness, resilience, collaboration and problem-solving skills—to do this successfully. Bottom line, we recognize that Hammerton’s most valuable assets walk in and out of our doors daily.” What is more American than an unshakable belief in the power of the individual?

VANGUARD FURNITURE vanguardfurniture.com |

Anyone who has ever tried to sew a straight seam, build a cabinet or finish a piece of furniture knows how difficult it is. It requires not only experience and know-how, but creativity and a collaborative mindset. Enter western North Carolina-based Vanguard Furniture, the custom case goods and upholstery furniture maker, whose skilled artisans have elevated furniture production to a fine art. “From material selection to hand-applied, multi-step finishes, every detail is considered,” president Andy Bray says. Offered with endless customization options, Vanguard’s furniture speaks to the American mindset that home is the ultimate form of self-expression. “Each piece of Vanguard furniture reflects the authenticity of a unique material or design sensibility. And yet, each piece is tailored to the distinctive tastes and experiences of its imaginer,” Bray says.
INGENUITY AT ITS FINEST Over the years, Vanguard has innovated with new technologies to improve service. Operational efficiencies allow us to create one-of-a-kind pieces and have them available for delivery in fewer than four weeks. And our new 3D visualizer applies state-of-the-art technology to visualize custom options and finishes on the fly and to rotate and examine your creation from any angle.
CUSTOMIZATION: THE AMERICAN WAY The American spirit is more independent, and as a result, prizes customization. From a design standpoint, products must be scaled and tailored to American sensibilities; those who desire furniture of distinction because they value their independence and individuality. From the production standpoint, the only way to manifest that goal is to do it locally. American manufacturing—especially the way we do it at Vanguard—builds furniture one piece at a time, so that each can be unique.
“ At Vanguard, everything we create involves provenance and customization.”

Gathering GROUNDS THE MODERN-DAY GREAT ROOM IS ALL ABOUT VERSATILITY. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN
As we take solace in our houses, the kitchen’s role as the heart of the home has become more essential than ever—it’s where we take business calls, help our children with homework, gather for breakfast and evening meals, and enjoy a refreshing cocktail at day’s end. So, it comes as no surprise that blending the kitchen and family room into one great room layout is high on most clients’ wish lists. Today, designers are planning adaptable spaces ideal for prepping meals, breaking bread and intimate socializing, as seen in this stunning project by designer Adam Hunter.

BIG PICTURE
For designer Adam Hunter, this impressive space started as a dream. “I had a vision of an all-metal kitchen in a beautiful patina with a floating marble hood,” he explains. With the help of all-star architect Steve Giannetti, trusting clients and an ace custom cabinetry company, Hunter was lucky enough to see his fantasy come to life. adamhunterinc.com What a room! I wanted to change up my own aesthetic with this project and I certainly reached high. But it really started with doing something unique, which was creating an all-metal kitchen.
How did you decide on the marble hood? We actually had to frame the house so it could support the hood, but I knew we had to go for it! The marble, which my dealers call a pinot noir, has moments of eggplant, burgundy and just the right kind of gold. When it all gleams together at a certain point in the day, it’s magic.

Talk to us about the cabinetry. Amuneal created some really luxurious textures and colors with stainless steel designs. We sort of invented a patina we’re calling “root beer.” It works so well with some of the other tones and materials found throughout the space. The glass cases flanking the range continue the view out to the backyard—they’re definitely a favorite feature.

To create a soaring space in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, designer Amber Brown Matlack of Brown Interiors knew she wanted to preserve the charm and history of the original 1935 Tudor-style residence when crafting this great room. After combining what was once a galley kitchen, small breakfast nook and dining room into a central area, she extended the ceiling into the attic to achieve a vaulted effect and expose the wooden beam. The warm color scheme evokes a nostalgic feel, including the mauve and gray tones on the cabinetry and a beautiful stone backsplash. Brown Matlack says she aimed for “a sense of openness and livability in the heartbeat of the house.” browninteriors.net

To celebrate the agrarian history of a family’s Bridgehampton property, Historical Concepts and Michael Davis Design & Construction envisioned a structure reminiscent of traditional potato barns in the area. Cedar board-and-batten cladding and masonry details, including Connecticut fieldstone retaining walls and natural bluestone cleft slabs designed in tandem with Hollander Design Landscape Architects, speak to the old-meets-new ethos.

TAKE COMFORT Take care. Stay safe. Be well. Who could have guessed the weight these phrases would take on in this uncharted new decade? Times of introspective nesting have illuminated that such directives start at home, reinvigorating a discussion on the many ways design can enhance our mental and physical wellbeing. Here, we share an assortment of restorative spaces whose principles—thoughtful details, indulgent amenities and ample conversation with nature— provide ideas for sanctuaries large and small.

Knowing that the indoor pool would be used through the colder months, the team nestled the feature in the ground, adding a south-facing skylight. “Between the warmth of the rammed earth and the natural light, it’s a perfect winter pool,” says Historical Concepts principal Kevin Clark. “It doesn’t feel like a cold conservatory.”

Sweet 1ESCAPE A BRIDGEHAMPTON SPORTS BARN OFFERS THE ULTIMATE FAMILY RETREAT.
“With a remote property, you have the opportunity to create a destination,” says Kevin Clark, principal of Historical Concepts. And so it came to be that a family’s brief for a recreational outbuilding on their Bridgehampton estate evolved into a sports barn laden with wellness features. Surrounded by acres of pristine farmland, the structure demanded a sensitive approach, one that Historical Concepts—an architecture firm known for legacy properties rooted in place— was well-suited for. Alongside interior designer Steven Gambrel, landscape architect Edmund Hollander and master builder Michael Davis, who assembled the team, plans were drawn for a lowslung, cedar-clad activity center softly folded into the rolling terrain. The decision to nestle the barn into, not onto, the landscape is an exercise in both historical accuracy and ingenuity. First, it references semisubterranean potato barns local to the region. Second, it meets a Hamptons building code limiting accessory structures to 20 feet high, while still allowing for a three-story structure for all the family’s amenity wishes to live in harmony. In full, the sprawling retreat includes family offices, a large vaulted great room, a kitchen, an indoor lap pool and spa, men’s and women’s locker rooms and an exercise room—plus a sunken tennis court with viewing pavilion. “The lay of the land and the feel of a place reveal themselves when you put pen to paper,” says Clark. “The top floor gym has a wonderful
LX_COM33_TheLook_TheReport.indd 139
view over the property, and the sauna, steam and massage rooms round out the indoor activities,” shares Davis. “In addition to the gathering room, there is a suite of three family offices particularly helpful during these times.” Throughout, Gambrel’s interiors scheme—a medley of warm woods and chalky blue, green and sand hues—sets a restorative tone. “The palette is muted, based on the environment as inspiration,” he explains, and indeed, the natural setting inspires. Complementing the agrarian landscape, Hollander took care in employing native plantings, such as bayberry, winterberry and viburnum, to welcome birds, bees and other pollinators. “Healthy, living landscapes are essential to the wellness of all visitors, all species,” he notes. Like many affluent New Yorkers, the family decamped to their country residence in the early days of the pandemic. In turn, the beloved barn has become a haven beyond anything client or design team could have planned for—a hub of safety, togetherness and health. “One of the most rewarding parts of our job is when you see a place you designed be truly life-altering for a family,” says Clark, adding, “When you treat home as resort, there’s something magical about that.”

GOODVIBES THREE DESIGNERS SHARE A PRINCIPLE THAT SHAPES THEIR PERSONAL PRACTICE.
LAURENCE CARR
New York, New York Wabi-sabi is a worldview rooted in Japanese origin all about taming desire for perfection in design, freeing us to live more sustainably and impart truly authentic style in our homes. To seek it is to honor the patina and character of our interiors and collected pieces, find harmony with nature, honor simplicity and do away with excess clutter. I help clients seek wabi-sabi through utilization of the seven Zen principles— one of which, for example, is incorporating unique pieces from our clients’ own collections. This practice shifts focus from trendy items to those that have been built lovingly, and with noble materials. Together with our clients, we identify character-rich pieces and intentionally place them in different rooms as the sturdy roots of our interior design approach. laurencecarr.com
MACELLE ALBEDA
Pasadena, California Biophilia stems from Greek as “love of life” and is about our innate human need to be connected to nature. Biophilic design focuses on how to layer nature into interiors, whether through actual elements like
LX_COM33_TheLook_TheReport.indd 140
plants, stone, wood, water and natural light, or “biomimicry,” which are shapes and patterns that remind us of being outdoors. The benefits are substantial: Close proximity to nature triggers a dopamine response in our brains that promotes well-being, lowering blood pressure and stress. Starting from the most basic ways to inspire biophilia, you can paint walls in colors we find in nature, like green, blue and brown. Then move on to adding motifs and plants. Advanced options include stone walls, water features and changing the building’s access to natural light. studiomahal.com
NINA MAGON
Houston, Texas One way of fostering well-being at home that I believe in and have used with great results is Vastu Shastra, an Indian system of architecture similar to feng shui. In Vastu Shastra, there are 5 elements: Earth (Bhumi), Water (Jala), Air (Vayu), Fire (Agni), and Space (Akasha). The central part of a house is ruled by the space element. As all directions meet in the center, it is the holiest and most powerful zone. So when possible, I like to ensure that the most-used room—often the living area—is located in the direct center and designed with a minimal aesthetic for less clutter and low furniture to allow for plenty of natural light. This approach harmonizes the flow of energy throughout the home, which facilitates good health. contourinteriordesign.com

LOST in REVERIE
There are serene rooms and then there are rooms where serenity seems to emanate from the walls, softening your disposition on viewing. This elixir of a bedroom in Jackson Hole, Wyoming—a collaboration between WRJ Design and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson—is decidedly the latter. Here, designer Rush Jenkins and architect Ray Calabro sound off on achieving Zen in tandem. wrjdesign.com; bcj.com Set the scene. RC: The site for the house is on a butte that overlooks the Snake River Valley with extraordinary views. The bedroom is located at the southern, most private end of the home and is embedded into the gentle slope of the site, connecting with the landscape at a more immediate scale. RJ: There’s a calmness and a majestic beauty that surrounds you. That’s what the color palette, the lighting, the simplicity of the design were about—creating harmony with nature. Material connection. RC: The southern wall is smooth-formed cast-in-place concrete, the flooring is white oak with a custom finish, the window wall is aluminum with a clear anodized finish, and the ceiling is composed of panels of white oak. RJ: The rug is bamboo silk, the bed is really luxurious suede, the pillows are a cashmere plaid from Loro Piana. Those tonal elements are about continuity with the exteriors and the architecture. Design highlights. RC: The water feature that stretches along the master suite is dynamic. We placed mirror-finish stainless steel panels on the roof overhang above the stream. The combination of gently moving water and mirror reflects constantly changing patterns of light into the master suite throughout the day. The effect is magical. RJ: The seamless windows in this room actually open from the bottom. Can you imagine waking up hearing the water rippling and the birds chirping in the garden? Sometimes, you’ll see a moose having a drink. You don’t get closer to nature than that. Dream team. RC: WRJ’s selections reinforce the quiet elegance of the home. The luxe finishes and fabrics express their commitment to quality and attention to detail that are guiding principles in the architecture. RJ: This house was a unified vision. The client wanted peace and simplicity, and every team member came at this design from the same philosophy.

Home WORK
Some decamped to dining tables. Others converted spare rooms to studies. In the immediate wake of the pandemic, remote work culture shifted inexorably, and with it, the landscape of home office design. With more and more companies adopting permanently flexible policies, it’s no surprise that designers are seeing an uptick in office updates. On deck? Spaces that foster productivity and focus, certainly—but also tranquility and moodboosting chic. Take a cue from these calming desks around the country.
▲ FRESH PERSPECTIVE In Vero Beach, Florida, designer Kevin Dumais’ unconventional furniture configuration is twofold. First, it makes way for foot traffic between the room’s two entrances. Second, it sets the client up to take advantage of the resplendent views and shifting sunlight throughout the day. dumaisid.com
BETTER TOGETHER With restorative garden views for the taking, designer Bryan Yates aligned a Dallas, Texas, couple’s work areas along a single window wall. The decision has a reverse fishbowl effect: The elegantly minimal design can be conversely enjoyed from the outdoor entertaining spots. yatesdesygn.com

AS TOLD TO GRACE BEULEY HUNT
From the very beginning, it was meant to be a place of rest. The architect picked the location for it’s amazing natural light and we worked with a feng shui master. Building started in September to encourage good luck and prosperity for the home. It was a special brief in that way—there was meaning behind every detail. We’re seeing more and more clients asking for specialty rooms, but these clients—two firstgeneration Chinese sisters—really use this space. After a hard day’s work, they retreat to drink tea together, practice calligraphy and meditate. They wanted to honor their heritage—but to modernize, too. Tea room window treatments are traditionally bamboo; we chose a light grass Conrad shade. The Chilewich rug is textured like a tatami mat and the white-oak furnishings are custom by Chi Wing Lo, a Chinese furniture designer living in Italy. The table has natural stone for water draining and a metal plate for the hot teapot to rest on. In spring, the sisters drink Longjing tea. In summer, jasmine tea paired with red bean pastry. In autumn, black tea with moon cake and in winter, Pu’er tea. They have an incredible collection of ceramic vessels; their most-prized is a Gongfu tea set from Yingge, a town famous for its production of porcelain. It was an inspiring project in that we learned so much from our clients. It also showed us how important it is to have a room dedicated to feeling good in—to feeling happy. We’re now looking to incorporate this principal into more of our designs. sullivandesignstudio.com

LOS ANGELES
ZELE COMPANY 310.254.6841 | zelecompany.com |
Zele Company
Zele Company is one design and manufacturing studio that can claim its line of furniture is “Made in America” without reservation. Not only is all the wood, metal and leather work done at the Zele Studio in Santa Monica, but even the saddle leather the company uses for its line of seating is made by Wickett & Craig, one of the few tanneries left in America. Zele’s in-studio design and production model reflects the vision of its founder, Zele Mane, and his son, Avi Mane, who now leads the operation: to create unique modern furniture by working outside the assembly line mindset. “In the furniture we create, we seek to display an intimacy between craft and design,” Avi says. “If it is necessary to hand stitch saddle leather around a metal frame to achieve a specific design vision, that’s what we’ll do.”
ROOTED IN DESIGN Los Angeles has a very rich Modernist design history, and it is always heartening to think that people like Ray and Charles Eames were practicing an art akin to ours just a few blocks from our studio.
LX_LA63_SS_MAM_Zele.indd 1
WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND “I think recent events have emphasized how our actions impact those around us in rippling circles of influence—be it our home, city, country or globe,” Avi says. “I like to think that it will remind consumers to be more mindful of the impact their purchasing habits have on the well-being of the community.”
“ The notion that ‘your home is your kingdom’ is very strong in America, making home design a form of individual expression.”

SOUS VIDE FOR THE SENSES
EXPLORE THE METHOD BEHIND CHEF-MADE MAGIC
Imagine the smell of a cut of steak that has retained its seasonings like never before; the taste and texture of each slice you bite into, its juices and flavor just as you prefer. A feast for the senses, if ever there was one. This could be your dinner, every evening. Allow us to introduce you to sous vide … the term is French for “under vacuum” and the technique is revolutionary. Vacuum seal your food—spices, marinades and all—and submerge it to cook in water. You can regulate the temperature to within a single degree and the heat will be evenly distributed from start to finish. The result, whether steak or fish, an egg or vegetables, redefines “perfectly cooked.” It used to be that maintaining the condition of the water demanded complexity, with equipment and processes that weren’t suited to the home. But no more. Thanks to Signature Kitchen Suite, this method is now yours to experience on the daily. Bathe your steak to its best quality ever, and then give it a little charring on the cooktop— all using one, first-of-its-kind range. Everything you need is right on your cooktop, with no extra tools or equipment required.

These groundbreaking, visionary and health-conscious home chefs value food in its freshest forms and the state-of-the-art tools and techniques that enable them to achieve new heights in cooking it—and they’ve got a favorite new kitchen mate: Signature Kitchen Suite’s Pro Rangetop. TO PROTECT AND SERVE DO YOUR WINE THE HONOR OF CAREFUL KEEPING
From growing, harvesting and crushing the grapes to aging and bottling the resulting libation, so much effort and attention is devoted to the careful art of winemaking. The same level of thoughtfulness should be given to its next phase, no? Signature Kitchen Suite thinks the answer is certainly yes, and that’s why they collaborated with the world’s most knowledgeable vintners, historians and scientists to develop wine refrigerators qualified for their occupants.
wine: temperature fluctuations, vibration, light and reduced humidity. Independent temperature zones enable one to organize red, white and sparkling varieties according to their needs; an inverted linear compressor and a metal interior minimize vibration to less than 2 gal (cm/s2); dark-tinted, triple-paned glass protects from UV; and evaporators maintain steady humidity levels. It’s the most ideal wine storage system, ever.
Designed to replicate the conditions of old-world wine caves, the 18-inch and 24-inch Integrated Column Wine Refrigerators are a sommelier’s dream. GUIDE TO THE GRAZING BOARD
Ah, the grazing board. It can be an after-school snack plate, elegant party hors d’oeuvre or individual meal. Delicious and aesthetically pleasing, this display of abundance is perfect for foodies of any age and in every setting. It’s a culinary staple. Given the nature of its ingredients, a grazing board demands a lot from one’s refrigerator. Meats should be quite a bit chillier than fruits and veggies, for example, and most of it can’t sit out for too long once you’ve put your spread together. Signature Kitchen Suite’s 24-inch and 30-inch Integrated Column Refrigerators prove the ultimate partner. Their Lift and Go™ bins and drawers offer a variety of places to customize storage conditions to the needs of specific foods, while a movable snack drawer is expansive enough to house extra-large serving platters. Let’s go to the market.

Find your canvas. We think wood boards make for beautiful backgrounds, but any traylike surface will do.
Decide on your must-haves. What are your favorite cheeses? Are you obsessed with olives? Or is red pepper jelly your jam (pun intended)?
Start pairing. Choose more foods with your first picks in mind and be intuitive about it. Just because something isn’t a conventional match, doesn’t mean you can’t include it. Trust your gut, as they say.
Slice, dice + roll! Get creative with presentation; think brie triangles and cheddar chunks, pepperoni chips and rolled prosciutto.
Top it off with extra flavor. Nestle dipping bowls into spaces around the board and fill them with yummy condiments (this can also be a great place for items that give off liquid you want to contain, like olives and pickles).

Life, REBUILT HOPE AND LOVE DRIVE THE TRANSFORMATION OF A MALIBU HOUSE INTO A COASTAL SANCTUARY. WRITTEN BY KELLY PHILLIPS BADAL / PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY BARTLAM
luxesource.com / 197
LX_LA63_HOM_Williger_12.indd 197
7/27/20 5:11 PM
In the renovation of a Malibu home, architect Paul Williger removed the existing low ceilings in favor of a loftier effect. Designer Judith Gill Schley notes, “This is a house that’s easy to be in.” To that end, she furnished the living room with chairs from Big Daddy’s Antiques and a bench from HD Buttercup. The mantel is from Exquisite Surfaces.
T
erry Adamson has always trusted her intuition. When she met her future husband at 18, that was it. When she bought her last car, she skipped the test drive. And when she decided to downsize, once she glimpsed photos of a Malibu fixer with stunning ocean views, she snapped it up—and then informed architect Paul Williger that he’d been enlisted to renovate it. “Terry left me a voicemail saying, ‘I hope you’ll take the project because I’ve already hired you,’ ” he recalls with a laugh. Determining the interiors followed the same pattern. “I’d show her 10 fabrics in a showroom, she’d point at one, and I’d say, ‘But I need to show you more!’ and she’d say, ‘No, I like the first one. Next!’ ” says designer Judith Gill Schley, who’s also Terry’s close friend of 25 years. “She’s very decisive.” Perhaps it only makes sense: Terry is a decision-maker by trade, a retired court commissioner who teaches parttime at Pepperdine University. Yet despite all the resolute action taken to create her home—transformed from a ho-hum 1960s tract house into a timeless European-inspired coastal sanctuary—having a new residence was never in Terry’s plans. When her husband, Grant, was killed during a ballooning accident seven years ago, staying in the Serra Retreat home they’d once shared became unbearable. “We built that house, and it was difficult to leave it, but it was too hard to be there without him,” she says. “I needed to move. And I purposely picked a fixerupper. This is my grieving project.”

Initially, Terry’s choice gave Schley a major pause. “When I first drove to the house, I was instantly concerned that it would be difficult to make it into the home she’d imagined. It was much smaller than her previous residence, had a warren of rooms that needed natural light, and needed to be opened and reconfigured,” she recalls. Adds Williger, “Terry had real faith that a different vision could be executed.” But first, Schley helped her friend discover her style. She had Terry, admittedly a design newbie, page through dozens of decor magazines and books, sticking Post-it notes on any photo that resonated. “It was such great advice—if you like something, point to it,” the homeowner says. When they reviewed the images, Schley was amazed at how easily a pattern emerged: Terry naturally gravitated to the style of the South of France. It was an illuminating moment. “One of the
LX_LA63_HOM_Williger_12.indd 201
places my husband and I visited there was a place called La Bastide de Marie,” she says. “I loved it, but I’d never thought of it as a style of architecture or design.” As a complete teardown of the existing home would have resulted in lost square footage, Williger opted to take it down to the studs and enhance the structure, working with general contractor Kevin Babineau on the project. Most dramatically, the architect took advantage of unused attic space to lift and vault nearly every ceiling, drawing the eye upward with reclaimed barnwood beams. A patio oddly indented into the living room of the original home was squared off in the renovation, and a loggia was added outside. The pool was rebuilt, pushed back and lengthened. The cramped kitchen was recast into an open space with an adjacent dining area crowned with a truss-and-beam ceiling.
A collection of California plein air paintings by artists such as William Wendt and George Gardner Symons hang above an RH Belgian linencovered sofa in the living room. “I love landscapes or seascapes, as opposed to portraits,” says homeowner Terry Adamson. “My favorite kind of painting is one you’d just like to jump right into.”

A new entry tower, which adds to the home’s footprint, makes a statement as does the gravel-paved formal motor court. Landscape architect Dana White layered in fruitless olive trees and plants that lean dark green and gray. “I wanted to bring in that old-world, European feel,” says White. Aged materials, from the exposed handhewn beams to the use of stonework and antique tile, bestow texture, character and French Provincial charm everywhere; blue is practically the sole accent color, a vivid inner ode to the ocean. And most importantly, large windows frame the unobstructed sea-and-sky views— epitomized by three stunning floor-to-ceiling glass doors in the master bedroom that stack open, allowing Terry to step out of bed and dive right into her pool. “The transformation
LX_LA63_HOM_Williger_12.indd 202
is phenomenal,” the architect says. “Essentially, this is a brand-new house, inside and out.” The designer, whose friendship with Terry became even closer during the project, pushed for a pared-down feel overall: nothing shiny, nothing frilly, nothing cluttered. “I think what I brought to this project was simplicity,” she says. “I wanted it more monastic than done-up. I wanted it to convey strength and warmth, to be bright, open and comfortable—that’s what she needs now. This is the antithesis of a retirement home. It’s a revival home.” Terry concurs: “My husband and I loved our original home; we never planned on moving. But I know he would understand and would love this one, too,” she says. “This was the right decision.”
Antique majolica tiles in cerulean blue—a score from Compas—cover the kitchen’s backsplash. The Blanco sink from Snyder Diamond is fitted with Waterworks fixtures and inset into a Caesarstone countertop. A verdant view is just beyond the mahogany windows by Millworks Etc.

Even the kitchen commands a breathtaking Pacific vista, the hues of which are echoed in the Azul Macaubas from Stoneland USA that tops the island. Hinges and knobs from The Golden Lion accent Manhattan Millworks cabinetry. The custom oak flooring is from Boardbrokers. Throughout, the reclaimed beams are from Vintage Timberworks.

ust a few blocks away from some of Southern California’s most idyllic beaches is the unexpected Laguna Beach neighborhood El Mirador. There, homes are built in historical styles following curving, tree-lined streets that conjure images of European villages rather than gridlike suburbs. That charm wasn’t lost on interior designer Michael Fullen, who fell for one of the area’s most wellpreserved examples. “The house sits on a large lot with old-growth trees, and the architecture is in the Provincial Revival style,” he explains. “We were drawn to its historical value, creative architecture and timeless quality.” All it needed was Fullen’s professional touch. “The house had been renovated by a couple who appreciated its historic character, but it was begging for a cosmetic refresh,” continues Fullen. The designer, who has two grown children with his husband, attorney John Isaza,

Interior designer Michael Fullen’s historic family home in Laguna Beach offers a welcoming feel. The designer considered selling the Italian armoire but instead decided to give it new life. “I had the interior painted a rich persimmon lacquer inspired by 18th-century chinoiserie cabinets,” he says. With a mirror now at the back, it’s in service as the dining room’s cocktail cabinet.

replaced carpeted areas with hardwood floors, updated light fixtures, added steel windows and doors, and repainted (inside and out), all in keeping with the residence’s original spirit. “The rest was accomplished with new furnishings, window treatments and our art collection,” he says. If he makes it sound easy, it was—mostly. “I was able to buy and mix anything that felt right in the moment,” he explains. “That’s almost impossible for clients to embrace. Most want a plan, and to see exactly what they are getting. Very few trust the process and allow this much to chance.” Here, Fullen was free to let the rooms develop organically, though he does admit to occasional moments of doubt, which he resolved by simply trusting his gut. “It can be paralyzing to make a committed decision in your own home, but this house spoke to me, and decisions came easily,” he says. Adds John: “I let Michael do what he does best. He knows not to overwhelm me with choices and would present his top three schemes for a given room. From that point, it was easier for me to inject
my ideas and preferences. I’m all about color, textures and functionality—but I push back on things that are fluffy or whimsical unless it serves a purpose. Though, once in a while, I surrender function for fabulous.” To make the home truly theirs, Fullen relied on furnishings of his own design, like the living room’s sofa and daybed. “The rest easily filled itself in,” he says. “To my eye, the best-looking homes have a mix of styles and values. Just because something is expensive doesn’t make it remarkable from a design perspective. It takes a keen eye to meld high and low with new and old, including a blend of modern, transitional and traditional,” he says. To that point, the living room also features a saber leg chair found years ago in Los Angeles, a tall case clock given to the couple by friends, and a boldly contemporary steel cocktail table, “the centerpiece to bind it all,” Fullen notes. What is not there is a television, a conscious decision by the couple to keep the room a quiet, more formal space.
Above: For an eclectic feel, the designer used a mix of butcher block, soapstone and marble for the kitchen countertops and painted the cabinetry Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy. The Viking range and hood are from Ferguson; the Rohl sinks and faucets are from Pirch. The counter stools are by Holly Hunt. Opposite: The kitchen was designed “to reflect the period architecture of the home,” says Fullen. Chairs from J. Fullen took a more relaxed approach in the den, freely mixing the couple’s existing pieces even though they were “completely different styles—beach cottage and midcentury.” What unites everything is their ebullient art collection. On one wall is a John Randall Nelson painting of a bicycle, and on another is a grouping of vintage portraits and plein-air paintings from California and Cape Cod. “The display of our artwork makes me smile,” John shares. “When we met, we realized we had many things in common, and one of them was an appreciation for art of all kinds. Over the years, we’ve found great pieces while on vacation, in local galleries, through Instagram, at antique stores, consignment shops and at charity auctions. We’re by no means art snobs,” he says.
The couple’s collection continues in the dining room, where a portrait by James Koskinas overlooks the table, and to their bedroom, where Fullen placed 19th-century figurative etchings above the bed and a colorful architectural painting by Siddharth Parasnis nearby. With its painterly pillow fabrics, even the rear patio is imbued with artistry. “Our home is a reflection of us and holds the things we love,” says Fullen. But the charm that first lured them has made an even greater impression of late, as the designer and his husband’s hectic travel schedules were grounded by the pandemic. “The dining room became my home office, the living room a place for conference calls, and the yard a place to escape it all,” he reflects. “We fell in love with the house in a whole new way. It has become our sanctuary.” luxesource.com / 215

ertain places stick with you. For actress Lindsay Price Stone and her husband, chef Curtis Stone, that special place is where they stayed when they got married in Majorca, Spain. “There was this gorgeous library. We’d sneak in there and drink until late at night, misbehaving,” Curtis laughs as he describes the cozy, book-lined setting. That warm, collected vibe is what the couple was looking for when they began searching for a new abode for themselves, their two sons and their two goldendoodles. “Even though Curtis is Australian and Lindsay is American, they wanted a European feel in a worldly way,” notes their designer Kishani Perera. While their aesthetic skews more European, the home they purchased, by architect Ken Ungar, leaned more contemporary. “The design was beautiful,” says Perera. “But everything was white. It was, however, an amazing canvas to build on for them.” The modern-meets-traditional bones were ideal for a family home, which was the appeal. “There was something really nice about it being a clean slate,” says Lindsay. “But Curtis and I both love old romantic stories and wines—old romantic everything, and the house needed soul.” The concept for the redesign, Perera says, was a “very comfortable, lived-in feeling.” This meant layering in luxurious fabrics and colors such as blue velvet and camel-hued leather, covering walls in modern interpretations of classic floral wallpapers, and—of course—incorporating built-in bookcases. The designer turned the living room into a lounge-y space reminiscent of that fabled Majorca library, where it exudes a salon-like ambience with charcoal walls, deep blue swivel chairs surrounding a coffee table with a gilded tray-top, an antique rug and the family’s vintage piano that Perera emphatically told them not to refinish. “The house is already very new, and we didn’t want to make everything new and perfect,” she explains. Unsurprisingly, considering Curtis’ career, the couple are consummate hosts, and many of Perera’s decisions were made with stylish, comfortable entertaining in mind. The dining room dazzles with wallpaper sporting a pinkish pattern of flora and fauna splashed across a dark background. (“Lindsay said from the get-go, ‘I want lots of amazing wallpapers,’ ” says Perera. “She’s not afraid of color and pattern.”) What brings the room together is a glamorous table with a polished black finish surrounded by chairs with inviting leather cushions—probably the most important thing in the room. Actually, says Lindsay, “one of the most important things in the whole house. If we’re going to have a formal dining room, you have to have a chair that you can sit in for hours.” Of course, when one half of the couple is a chef, the kitchen is also key. With a great layout, tons of storage, top-
LX_LA63_HOM_Perera_12.indd 221
notch appliances and an ideal location right off the dining room, there wasn’t much that needed to be done—besides saying goodbye to the all-white decor. Perera coated the cabinets in a deep blue-gray that added richness and installed a farmhouse table and blush-colored banquette that nods to the whimsical style Curtis leans into. “I go for a pretty vintage sort of a feel,” he muses. “I really like patinaed, kind-of-used, well-weathered crockery and cookware.” Pattern, too, appears in the kitchen, with antique carpets on the floors. The kitchen extends into the great room, which, Lindsay muses, “is the room I’m most grateful for,” as it allows the entire family to gather together. Its generous proportions did constitute something of a conundrum. “It was gigantic,” says Perera. “We had to figure out what to do with a space this huge.” She created separate areas with back-to-back sofas, one facing the kitchen and the other facing the television. Upholstering the sofas in different fabrics—green velvet and a textured stripe, respectively—then adding leather club chairs gave the collected, lived-in look that encourages everyone to stay awhile. Each layer Perera included imbued the house with the soul Lindsay and Curtis desired. Perhaps the biggest touch, though, is a piece the couple had from the start that now hangs in the master bedroom. The artwork, which Curtis commissioned as a gift for Lindsay, is her wedding dress sculpted by Natasha Zupan onto a canvas using latex. “It has the most amazing texture,” says Perera. “It’s white on white, but you can still see the different fabrics of the dress.” The piece’s romantic feel captures the spirit of the entire home. “How do you make a brand-new house feel like it’s rooted and has stories?” asks Lindsay. “You conjure up images of the places in the world that have that romance.”
“EVEN THOUGH CURTIS IS AUSTRALIAN AND LINDSAY IS AMERICAN, THEY WANTED A EUROPEAN FEEL.” –KISHANI PERERA

7/27/20 5:37 PM
Although Perera used many contemporary custom pieces in the great room, such as the back-to-back sofas, she wanted them to have an antique flair. “I upholstered them in Claremont fabric,” she says. “They still make textiles the way that they used to, so it has this vintage hand to it.” The leather club chairs from Big Daddy’s Antiques add to the old-school charm, as do the circa 1960 Paolo Buffa wing chairs from Obsolete and vintage coffee table from Dekor.
