Narrative Structure

Embedded into a Pacific Palisades promontory, a quiet aura of craftsmanship and personality pervades a family abode.

A designer’s vibrant, lively sensibility comes to life in a Corona del Mar beach home filled with whimsical moments.

Provocative sculptures provide a visual commentary on fleeting beauty and mortality under one L.A. artist’s hands.

Evoking the look of a European hill town with a modern twist, this new Montecito dwelling channels a rustic spirit.

This issue of Luxe is essentially a love letter to the people who make design happen. In addition to our annual GOLD LIST, which recognizes talents from across the country who have had their projects featured in our pages the past year, we celebrate creative originators and innovators: a community and collective of people who are grounded in their craft and dedicated to pushing design forward. We thank all of you for imagining and enriching the homes we live in. As the rhythms of daily life begin to return, and the pandemic recedes into the rear view, I am hopeful that the meaningfulness of home, and the people who reimagine the spaces of our everyday life, will remain in our hearts and minds.

Luxe celebrates people in design, including interior designers Rayman Boozer (above), Martyn Lawrence Bullard (middle) and Young Huh (right).

ABBIE NABER X JUNE + BLUE The Instagram friendship between San Diego designer Abbie Naber and Becca Loyer, founder of European rug company June + Blue, recently evolved into Checkmate, a new carpet collaboration. Here, they share the collection’s story. anaberdesign.com; juneandblue.com Why checks? Abbie: Checkered floors are a timeless, historical design, but they’re also playful and light. Becca: And they’re versatile—there aren’t many places you can’t add some checks.

SHELF LIFE

Tell us about the color palette. Abbie: The rugs are graphic in nature, so I thought it important to tone down the options—Dove, Nougat, Charcoal. Becca:

Abbie designs neutral spaces that are full of depth and interest, so I was all-in for the palette she created. Fool’s Gold is my favorite, it’s punchy and subtle at the same time. Where are the rugs made? Becca: Our atelier is located in a Moroccan village, where we employ local artisans from start to finish: They custom dye our 100-percent live wool, lead the weaving process, and wash and prep the rugs to ship. Why made-to-order, as opposed to stock? Becca: We wanted customers to have the choice of border and tassel styles, as well as the option to customize sizes, so it made sense to be bespoke.

Victoria Kastner, Hearst Castle’s now-retired official historian, has authored a new book on the castle’s architect, Julia Morgan, the first female architect to be licensed in California. This revealing look at Morgan’s personal life emerged from Kastner’s decades of research and an international foray into the architect’s personal papers, illuminating her thoughts on faith, family, perseverance, and her passion for architecture. “Her life was even more admirable than I’d realized, and her diaries turned into an astonishing document of her inner life, of heartbreak and adversity,” says Kastner, who has also recorded an audio version for Hachette. “She didn’t have an ‘off’ button, and her health suffered for it, but her bravery and sheer brilliance—especially in an era when there were no female role models—makes her story inspiring,” she adds. While Morgan remains most famous for San Simeon, the book sheds new light on the more than 700 other projects, both public and residential, that comprise Morgan’s extraordinary portfolio. chroniclebooks.com

MEET THE MAKER WAYNE PERRY

SCENE

DESIGN

After 25 years in the field, the spotlight has found Los Angeles artist Wayne Perry. Originally a painter, Perry came to clay through working with Peter Shire’s production pieces. “It was a good opportunity to make connections,” Perry recalls, but he soon wanted to craft his own designs. His medium of choice, however, was something of a surprise. “Terra cotta was frowned upon—relegated to roofing tile and flowerpots,” he recalls, “but it’s the working man’s clay, and I liked the juxtaposition of that.” From his home

studio, Perry produces engaging works, ranging from curiously slumped vases to traditional forms painted with narratives that depict contemporary scenes. Along with teaching workshops at the Getty, Perry’s lightweight wheel lets him travel to underprivileged students and introduce them to careers as a studio artist. His work is also finding a new audience at the Academy Museum, whose shop commissioned a line of vessels last fall. “They’re based on midcentury modern shapes with film patterns in sgraffito,” he says. At the suggestion of famed designer and board member Diane von Furstenberg, he also created a cylindrical gold design that pays homage to the museum’s Art Deco façade. And new this year, Perry’s own online shop is offering limited releases of his works. wayneperry.com

IN GOOD TASTE THE BARN AT HILT ESTATE

Oenophiles and design enthusiasts alike will delight at Santa Barbara wine country’s newest tasting room, The Barn at Hilt Estate. “The property’s 1914 barn was the anchor for the project, and who better than architect Howard Backen to capture the beauty of an old barn while giving it new life?” says estate manager Armand de Maigret. At the recommendation of Backen, whose Napa firm helped define California’s wine country style, the owners turned to Calabasas designer Amber Lewis for interiors that are “friendly, comfortable and warm,” de Maigret explains. “The goal was a laid-back space, so we brought in an assortment of warm and layered textiles, vintage elements and nature-inspired hues,” adds Lewis. “We wanted visitors to feel like they were hanging at a good friend’s house, who also happened to have a phenomenal wine cellar.” The creative team also included local firm Arcadia Studio, who helped guide the addition of oak and fruit trees—as well as a herd of goats—that will thrive on the historic rancho. thehiltestate.com

BE IT FOR A FEW NIGHTS, A FEW WEEKS, OR A LIFETIME, THESE DESIGN-FOCUSED RETREATS CELEBRATE THE ART OF GOOD LIVING.

CANYON HOMES Nestled just below Franklin Avenue and within easy reach of Beachwood Canyon and Griffith Park is a new five-unit, three-story condo building by Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects. The curving, almost sail-like structures, are a play on the A-frame concept and increase density while maintaining the residential, single-family scale of the neighborhood. Cedar-clad garages occupy the ground level, with the two-story, aluminum- and glass-clad homes cantilevered above them. Natural light fills the airy interior spaces, which were designed by DISC Interiors. A clever “upside down” layout puts the bedrooms on the first floor and the open kitchen and living areas on the second floor, with a rooftop terrace crowning each unit. canyon5homes.com

You needn’t be an Olympian to enjoy the former home and pool of Vicki Draves, the first Asian American woman to bring home the gold for competitive diving at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. Her home, designed by midcentury developer Paul Trousdale, is situated on an ultra-private 3,000-square-foot walled lot in Palm Springs’s Tahquitz River Estates neighborhood. The open-plan rental property, which is managed by Acme House Company and furnished in collaboration with West Elm, offers a primary suite and two guest bedrooms, with a casita, to boot. Outside, entertaining areas include a dining pavilion with a lounge area and fire pit, a grilling station and bar, and a bocce ball court. acmehouseco.com

VICEROY SANTA MONICA The Viceroy Santa Monica has undergone a $21-million renovation spearheaded by Bay Area hospitality firm EDG. Building on the hotel’s quintessentially Southern California style, the refresh removed interior walls to open the lobby and increase indoor-outdoor cocktail and dining options at Sugar Palm Ocean Avenue. New poolside cabanas echo the spirit of those originally designed by Kelly Wearstler when the hotel debuted 20 years ago. Also new is an art collection created in collaboration with visual arts agency Art x Co and focusing on local creators. Commissions include a façade mural by Erin Miller Wray, Karen Bystedt’s mixed-media series “The Lost Warhols,” abstract paintings by Monica Perez and a patio mural by Evelyn Leigh. viceroyhotelsandresorts.com

THREE DESIGNERS REFLECT ON AN INDELIBLE SPARK.

Martyn Lawrence Bullard

AS TOLD TO MICHELLE BRUNNER

When I was 12 years old, I began my career selling antiques from a stall in London’s Greenwich Market. It was the 1980s then, and Art Deco was the height of fashion. It was one of the first design periods that I studied, and from that, my passion grew. Because I came from a theatrical background—originally, I wanted to be an actor—it’s only natural that I would be drawn to a style so closely associated with Hollywood glamour. With the advent of cinema, Los Angeles boomed during the 1920s and 1930s, and extraordinary spaces, like the Cicada Club in downtown L.A. and the historic Sunset Tower hotel, were built. For me, the appeal of Art Deco lies in its association with decadence. The world had just come out of World War I, and there was reason to celebrate. People wanted drama and floridity. We left behind the Edwardian and Arts-and-Crafts periods, and turned almost instantly to this brand-new era symbolized by ornate geometric forms. Of all the Art Deco styles, I’m particularly fond of Egyptian Revival. It conjures the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, and with that, an air of adventure, travel and romance. In my work and in my own home, many Orientalist and Moroccan motifs blend with the geometric vibe and monochromatic palette of Art Deco. Recently, I drew inspiration from the period to inform a collection of inlaid stone and lacquer accessories for SV Casa. We did a series of beautiful cases that open into bars, inspired by Hermès and Louis Vuitton steamer trunks from the 1930s. They recall one of the first Art Deco pieces I ever bought: a 1920s alligator case, which makes me long for the time when travel was new. In those days, people used silver- and-gold jars in sleek cases for toiletries. We used to travel in such style! I’ve kept it with me throughout my journeys. It’s a great nod to my past, both in my dealing in objects of that era and my love of Art Deco itself. Martyn Lawrence Bullard on the steps leading to the pool and gardens of his Los Angeles home. The graphic patio tile nods to Art Deco geometrics.

I was born in Seoul, South Korea, but moved to Michigan when I was three. Most of my ideas about my home country came from my parents, who were passionate about collecting and preserving Korean art. One of my favorite early memories was flying to New York City with my mother. She was shopping for a scholar screen— an artwork meant to decorate the study of a Yangban (a scholar of the highest class). They depict items a Yangban might exhibit to show his refinement: books, a peony, ink brushes. My mother was also searching for folk art—colorful, informal paintings, often with suggestive subject matter. I learned then that there were two schools of Korean art: the school based on courtly formalities, and the folk art hung in the homes of merchants or shamans. Adolescent me became fascinated with folk art. Rabbits smoking pipes! Mountains in every color under the sun! The rainbow hanbok of young girls! To me, these visions were the heartbeat of traditional Korean art—and today, they inspire every inch of my design aesthetic.

Some people think decorating is about picking pretty fabrics, but it is rooted in soils far deeper than that. As I design this home, I think of all the people who have lived here over the last two centuries, my family tree that dates back 700 years, and my children who will carry the future— and who, I hope, will tell everyone’s story. Young Huh in her Manhattan office, framed by inspiration images and wallpaper samples. The large pink swatch is a custom, in-the-works concept for her country house.

Last year, I purchased a home in New York’s Hudson Valley: a classic Colonial in the most idyllic countryside setting. As I dreamt of how to decorate, my thoughts turned to my heritage. One project I’m working on is designing a wallpaper with Fromental, inspired by the papers out of East Asia, which were traded in the New World in the 17th century. I’ll be incorporating both the structure of courtly paintings and the brightness of folk art, all presented in a modern way.

Fashioning a Narrative

Ever since I was a child on a farm in Indiana, fashion has been my obsession. I was the middle child of nine—the Jan Brady of our family, and sort of invisible. After seeing The Mary Tyler Moore Show, my dream became to live in a city in an apartment. At age 8, I made a pact that I would one day move to New York and do glamorous things with my life. We didn’t have a ton of money, but my mother had amazing style. She made a lot of our clothes—think: red-white-and-blue bell bottoms with matching shirts. Even at age 5, I was picky about what colors I wanted to wear, and I hated being dressed like my brothers—I wanted control! Growing up, I fell in love with magazines. I’d go down to the local newsstand and pour over Vogue and GQ. One day, a handful of subscription cards fell out, and I noticed the “bill me later” part. I asked the shopkeeper if I could have them, filled them out, and for three months, I built a library. In high school, my parents let me get subscriptions—but I held onto those issues and read them over and over.

A lot of people see fashion as trivial, but I believe that it’s a nonverbal way of communicating with like-minded people. Especially in Manhattan, you’re always presenting yourself to the public in some way. For me, fashion is armor. It’s a silent means of declaring who you are. Rayman Boozer stands at the threshold of his Manhattan closet wearing a Prada sweater and slacks (his favorite fashion house) and Tods loafers.

When I went to college, I declared a fashion design major before finding interiors. What I am is a strong fashion editor—I’m good at pairing things together in interesting ways: colors, textures, attitudes—and a mix of high-low. My velvet Gucci blazer with a Uniqlo sweater; a leather Prada trench coat with my favorite Scotch and Soda jeans. Fashion also feeds my approach to color—you see daring combinations on the runway before the home. This, in part, is what keeps my interiors optimistic and open-minded.

Provence

Happy place: About 7 years ago, I rented a 300-year-old house outside of Avignon with my family—and it was kind of an epiphany. We’d spend mornings by the pool, then drive through the Rhône and visit towns, like Roussillon, which has this incredible sandstone, terra-cotta and ochre palette. Only fitting: Provence has a similar climate to Los Angeles, and the building materials—stucco, painted wood windows and shutters, tiled roofs—are essentially the same as Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, a primary vernacular of Southern California. Dream delivered: From the minute you walk in the front gate, you’re in this other world of pea gravel, olive trees and lavender. You enter the house through a pair of French doors, and it’s all very open and transparent. To me, it’s transportive emotionally. The clients, the design team and I were all so taken with the authenticity of the Provençal lifestyle; we tried to capture it’s relaxed, casual elegance in this home. willigerarchitect.com

Rockefeller Center

RADAR

Designer Bill Musso found inspiration for his Atlanta condo in a beloved landmark’s Art Deco mystique.

main photo: getty. inset: lauren rubinstein.

Early influence: My grandmother was enamored with Radio City Music Hall. Whenever she had the opportunity, she would take me to see a live show or a movie. We’d spend time walking around Rockefeller Center, and she would point out all of the friezes and statues. Aha moment: Four years ago, I did the 30 Rock tour. I wasn’t so interested in the TV aspect, but in wandering the halls and common spaces and taking pictures! Ode to Deco: The marble floor in my entry was inspired by an elevator waiting area at 30 Rock; I worked with The Rug Company on a runner that’s literally an adaptation of the carpeting in Radio City Music Hall; and my interior doors have the same Art Deco-influenced, raised panel design. Balancing act: Inspiration is all about knowing when to peel back. Like Coco Chanel famously advised: stand in front of the mirror and remove one item. I’d never want to feel like I’m living in a time capsule (as much as I love wearing a smoking jacket). mussodesigngroup.com

A Vintage Photograph

Unexpected idea: This photo of Sonny Bono and former Mayor Frank Bogert was the first inspiration image we showed our client. We overlaid it with a pink filter to tease out the magical light that happens at sunset in Palm Springs. There’s a rugged romance—a laid-back, masculine mood to it—that sung to us. Desert journey: There’s no front yard or backyard, per se. You enter through a portal in the Ficus, then move through these different sequences that are always changing: a fire pit surrounded by muhly grass, a palo Verde grove, an olive tree dining orchard. It speaks to this notion of traveling on horseback through an ephemeral landscape. Message received: For this project, we “borrowed” palm trees from the neighbors’ yards—and the San Jacinto mountains peaking above the hedges. At sunset, with the pink grasses in full bloom, the image of the cowboys and the palms—that feeling of a total Palm Springs escape—is really what you’re getting. sdisf.com

The English Country House

Mood board: From the first time I saw the property, the story in my mind was that it was a kooky British grandmother’s house that had been passed down to the next generation. It’s a large, new construction home, but the way the rooms were laid out—the intimacy of scale and the classical millwork— suggested history. Hero piece: I’ve always been drawn to tapestries, and here, they provided a strong “old manor house” through line. We hung a large 18thcentury Flemish tapestry in the living room and wallpapered the dining room in a Scalamandré print for a European country house vibe. Homework: I pinned about a billion pictures. Upton House, a Georgian manor in Gloucestershire that we referenced, has this hall with the most perfect minty green, which inspired the shades of celadon throughout. I love historical colors; tertiary tones are so much more interesting. studiohus.com

High-octane starlet glamour inspired Samantha Todhunter’s interpretation of an Aspen ski retreat.

main photo: oliver clarke. inset: getty.

Modern muse: Our projects often begin with a sensibility imbued by a person, and in this case, Sophia Loren was one of our initial drivers for the mood and design intent; she’s the very embodiment of la dolce vita. Dramatic details: My clients wanted to transform a pastiche Colorado lodge into a home that was cool, effortless and glamorous; a space that lights up at night for entertaining, but also provides a languishing daytime salon. A core element to our work is always ‘the mix’ and for this dolce vita-driven project, the mix manifests in interesting combinations of textures and weaves. Think: mohair velvets and metallic glazed linens, marble and lacquer, and patinated brass elements. Secret sauce: It can be easy to go over the top, especially when you are going for high-impact design. The art is to know when you have done enough to tell the story. A successful room is all about artful layering drawn from travel, books, nature, art, history—and iconic people. samanthatodhunter.com

For a new home in Point Reyes Station, California, architect Dave Sturm channeled a design icon’s purist approach. Origin story: Our client grew up visiting Mexico and had loved Barragán since childhood. Field work: I was a budding architect when Barragán won the Pritzker Prize, and had been wanting to visit his home for decades. This project prompted my wife and I to spend two weeks in Mexico City. We visited several museums a day, and many Barragán buildings. I immersed myself in his spatial relationships. Good stuff: Barragán had this really limited, yet influential palette; a very high-modern aesthetic. His pink is almost like the national color. Key details: Nothing extraneous; we brought the walls all the way down to the floor—no trim, baseboards or moldings. And we used steel casement-style windows for the cleanest sight lines. Take it back: It’s a reference, not an homage. We were inspired by his simplicity. If Barragán had signed on, I imagine the walls might be pink. butlerarmsden.com

WITH HER LATEST COLLECTION, DESIGNER LORI WEITZNER DELIVERS AN ODE TO CENTRAL PARK. W R I T T E N B Y H E AT H E R C A R N E Y

Imagine wandering through Central Park. Bright pink petals highlight a grid between cobblestones. Intricate moldings and sandstone carvings come into focus on stair railings. At sunset, the city skyline turns from orange to golden to purple to gray. It’s this romantic setting that provided designer Lori Weitzner with hope and refuge during the dark days of the pandemic—while also opening her eyes to patterns, textures and colors hidden in plain sight. “It was a lesson in the idea that you’re so familiar with something that you stop looking,” says the designer. “I began to see everything in a whole new way.” The resulting collection is an ode to Central Park—an exploration of fabrics and wallcoverings that captures the beauty of a city in the midst of rebirth. “I love New York. It’s what keeps my senses alive. You pass a bakery, then you pass litter on the street. It’s all there,” says Weitzner. “Central Park is an oasis to the urban grit.” IPhone in hand, the designer would “click, click, click” on weekly rambles through her sanctuary, then return to her quiet Chelsea design studio where she printed and arranged the photos on a large white table. From there, the creative work would begin—editing, sorting, sketching and playing with colors and materials. Chariot, for example, a soft jacquard linen with subtle damask patterning, evolved from an image she snapped of traditional stonework near Bethesda Fountain. “We painted it in the studio, and then, because we didn’t want such a traditional pattern, we took a sponge

and broke it up with texture so it would feel eroded,” explains Weitzner. Illumination, an embroidered textile, stems from sketches of foliage in the Shakespeare Garden, while Mesmerize, a cut velvet print, takes its cues from the fountain’s stone filigree. With the line complete and her schedule picking up, it might be surprising to hear that the designer still carves out time to walk in the park—but it’s a habit she’s not willing to give up. “The pandemic made me slow down and appreciate the details,” reflects Weitzner. “This collection is about nature, but it’s also about seeing things anew.”

PASSION PROJECT MATTHEW QUINN

What a beautifully layered space! This kitchen is an homage to the owner, whose zeal for art, food and life shines through in the design. When she and her family moved from Mexico to the Atlanta area, they acquired a charming bungalow property and she promptly saved her pennies for 12 years to have her dream “Matthew Quinn” kitchen, as she explained, which was truly the ultimate compliment. Wow. What did she request? Thinking outside of the box was important to the client. She wanted to make the kitchen uniquely her own, which included covering the walls with art, creating plenty of storage for cookbooks and even adding cork flooring that provides comfort when standing and cooking. But it’s really about this funky mix of colors and materials that works so well together. Talk to us about the details. The Amazonia Quartzite screamed “bar area.” The boldly colored veining of the stone is paired with an equally striking blue paint on the cabinetry that creates a vibrant, fun moment. In the kitchen, white-glass countertops and high-gloss Macassar Ebony veneer cabinetry balance out the La Cornue range and brass finishes. Makassar Ebony Veneer Cabinetry, downsviewkitchens.com. Amazonite Stone, abcworldwidestone.com.

STRATEGIC APPROACH “I fell in love with kitchens because of their technicality—I like to focus on the architectural plan first; I’m a big stickler for rectangular and square rooms. From there, we address access points, center lines, location of appliances, storage, circulation, ergonomics and functionality. After nearly 30 years in the business, I can immediately pinpoint what needs to be tweaked, but if the kitchen works well, I know I can make it beautiful.” matthew-quinn.com

CALMING INFLUENCE CHRISTOPHER PEACOCK What was the inspiration for this serene palette? A big, beautiful picture window decorates the kitchen, and we didn’t want the rest of the space to compete with that focal point, so there was a conscious effort to keep the colors more earthy and muted. We went with a two-tone paint effect for the cabinetry: a lovely olive or sage green on the island and then a warmer gray on the perimeter. Walk us through the rest of the design. The scheme was about making it simple and quiet while keeping it spacious. There wasn’t a strong desire to fill the walls with unnecessary cabinetry; rather our focus was on the

materials and finishes. A handmade subway tile with varying shades makes for a beautiful backsplash that provides subtle movement; we avoided anything too shiny and went with brushed and satin nickel hardware. How did you approach scale? This is a very large kitchen with a barreled ceiling. So we grounded the environment with a large island featuring cutting blocks at both ends and a custom pewter-and-nickel metal hood that anchors one wall. The island table developed into a multifunctional element with storage and seating, as well as a place to work, prepare food and entertain.

TOP TAKEAWAY “The key is to be a good listener, have an inquisitive mind and a holistic or all-encompassing approach. If you watch what happens in most people’s kitchens today, it’s not kitchen related. It’s a gathering space, an entertaining space, a quiet space. Sometimes it’s a retreat or a place to relax—it’s all these things. We have to understand how the kitchen is being used because this room has matured into the most important space in the home. It’s critical to get the design right. Trust the people you’re working with—a kitchen renovation is an everlasting project.” peacockhome.com La Jolla Scone, paulferrante.com. HERITAGE MOMENT SARAH BLANK

This kitchen is in an older home, right? It’s an absolutely stunning Spanish Renaissance residence that was built in the early 1900s along the Hudson River. Unfortunately, the kitchen was in bad shape after a recent update, but I was lucky that the client wanted to go back to its historic character. I am a big believer in taking from the past to create the future and spent a lot of time understanding the original aesthetic of this property.

How does your background inform your designs? I love classical architecture and historic structures—I’ve been a part of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art for a long time. Everything I do now, even after all this time, goes back to the aesthetic of old homes and what they teach us.

LUXESOURCE.COM

Sarah Blank Design Studio chose Farrow & Ball’s Stone Blue for the island in this Irvington, New York, kitchen by Taconic Builders. A BlueStar range, Miele oven and custom hood complete the scheme.

EXPERT TIP “Here’s a trick for anyone embarking on a new kitchen project: Do not clean up when the designer comes over to see how you live. If you tidy up before I arrive, how am I going to know what the problems are? I spend a lot of time talking to clients and asking what they want, but what tells me even more is opening all the cabinets and drawers and looking at their inventory and how everything is stored. Once I know what’s behind closed doors, I can design your kitchen! My new book, Classic Kitchens for Modern Living, is certainly a culmination of everything I have learned over the past 40 years!” sarahblankdesignstudio.com

photo: neil landino. book cover: images publishing, march 2022.

Where did you start? Before I did anything, there were several architectural changes that needed to be made, including taking down a wall, reworking a window and altering the ceiling. Then, I began the mission of taking a very narrow kitchen and making it functional. A lot of the elements, such as the metalwork and wood detailing, are inspired by 19th-century European kitchens.

HIGH-DESIGN BAR SPACES TOP CLIENTS’ WISH LISTS.

LIVING

“ A hand-painted, high-gloss cabinetry color was customized around the wallcovering in this Short Hills, New Jersey, project. We always ask and try to push our clients to do something a little more unexpected in smaller spaces. The outcome was beautiful.”

“The client had an impressive collection of vintage glassware and entertained a lot, so from the very beginning of our conversation we knew the bar would be an important component. The homeowner was drawn to the vibrant color and stone elements. The resulting happy mix is truly a reflection of her.” –MATTHEW QUINN

“ T his Stamford, Connecticut, jewel of a room is both a wet bar and wine room, as well as a butler’s pantry. The homeowner fell in love with the tiger maple wood, while the high-gloss ceiling and its reflective quality make the room feel deceptively large.” –SARAH BLANK

JEAN LIN, COLONY In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, then-design journalist Jean Lin sparked an idea: invite local New York City artists to craft works from debris for storm relief. In the process, Lin grew familiar with the growth and representation struggles faced by independent makers—and the idea for a new, community-driven gallery model was born. Where the industry-standard commission hovers around 50 percent, Colony takes a smaller fraction of each sale, and charges a stabilized monthly co-op fee. Their contract also includes a non-exclusivity clause, which “shows our true intention of putting the bottom line of the designers we rep before our own,” says Lin. Expanding its influence and capital, Colony has since launched an in-house consultancy offering marketing, art direction and interior design services. “The vision moving forward is that these branches of business scale in tandem,” says Lin. “Which goes back to Colony’s founding spirit and genuine belief that all ships rise with the tide.” goodcolony.com

THE CURATOR

THE INNOVATOR

“I don’t love the word ‘disruption,’ but I am passionate about asking the question, ‘how can we make people’s lives easier?’ And I think the answer to that lies in meeting them where they are,” shares Anderson Somerselle. For Somerselle, a veteran of the textiles industry, this passion manifested in a digital-first showroom designed to aggregate boutique lines—as well as their up-to-date stock numbers and samples—in one destination. “It’s an honest response to witnessing how many designers and clients start their inspiration process online,” he notes. With the lower overhead associated with a digital footprint, Somerselle also provides a more affordable representation avenue for smaller brands. “It made sense to bring together these amazing artisans in a virtual showroom first, because there’s more reach,” he explains. “Eventually, we’ll open a physical space, but that will be a totally different experience. I want people to say, ‘Wow! I want to live here.’ ” somerselle.com

THE RECONCEIVERS NOAM DVIR AND DANIEL RAUCHWERGER, BOND

In a past life, Noam Dvir and Daniel Rauchwerger worked as critics at the Israeli newspaper Haaretz before falling in love, heading west to earn their masters at Harvard and founding BoND, a holistic architecture and design firm focused on expanding traditional ideologies of home. “In the residential environment, there’s this mold of how a space should be organized—but design for non-nuclear families looks different,” explains Dvir, pointing to the themes of gathering and desire that often distinguish their work. “Design should explore many different identities and lifestyles, and we really wear that on our sleeves.” With a fast-expanding residential practice, the couple has their sights set on more cultural projects in the commercial space. (They recently designed Company Gallery, a leading queer art institution, and are fast at work on a trans-led after-hours nightclub.) “It’s very important to us to work on projects that people will have access to, and that feed us spiritually,” says Rauchwerger, adding, “the real fun comes in sharing.” bureaund.com

ZOE FELDMAN, ZOE FELDMAN DESIGN

“I truly don’t know a lot about sustainability—and that’s kind of the point!” demurs Zoe Feldman. For the Washington, D.C.-based designer, the birth of her daughter in 2018 collided with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s devastating special report on global warming, spurring her to evaluate her own role in the climate crisis. After researching avenues of impact—and

Designer Zoe Feldman stands amidst hero pieces from her new capsule collection of vintage and antique rugs curated for District Loom. With every purchase, 100 trees will be planted.

upon discovering that planting a tree only costs 5 cents— she designed a green pledge as a core pillar of her business. Aptly named Our Beautiful Planet, the framework includes donating her consultation fee to an environmental charity (then matching it upon contract signing), planting 100 trees for every approved design proposal (offsetting its carbon footprint), and a commitment to sourcing 80 percent vintage. Feldman hopes to turn this working template into a movement that designers can adapt to suit their practice. “These are easy things to implement,” she says. “We’re trying to show the industry that we can all take very small, simple steps and potentially, make a massive impact.” zoefeldmandesign.com

THE STORYTELLERS HOMAN RAJAI AND ELENA DENDIBERIA, STUDIO AHEAD

For Homan Rajai and Elena Dendiberia, design is both a global and local affair. What it is not is siloed around Eurocentrism. Meeting as young designers, the pair, with their respective Iranian and Russian roots, felt similarly disconnected from the world of European antiques they were living in, so they built a new framework. Questions like, What philosophies do you relate to? distinguish their client questionnaire, and Rajai and Dendiberia champion a diverse network of vendors working in traditional crafts. “There’s this assumption that—say, Persian rugs—are in the past tense. We’re educating our clients that there are living, breathing, modern-day craftspeople making these pieces,” says Rajai. At the other end of the spectrum, the firm is devoted to amplifying design at a hyper-local scale—and boasts a fast-expanding production wing of collaborations between Northern California artists. “Think of Alice Waters and what she did with farm-to-table,” says Rajai. “We’re bringing the same idea to design.” studioahead.com

THE BOTANIST JESSICA VIOLA, VIOLA GARDENS

A promise to “seek biological over technical solutions” nests at the core of Jessica Viola’s approach to the garden. Certified in ecological and permaculture design, Viola (one of a handful of licensed female landscape contractors in California) cut her teeth rehabilitating lawns into gardens in the California drought. Those regenerative principles have propelled her business since. Whether sculpting brims in the landscape to better harness rainfall, or planting for erosion control and fire resistance, Viola’s bottom line is embracing the intrinsic characteristics of each property, fostering the age-old relationships between people, flora and fauna amidst a changing climate. In this way, tackling the crisis becomes a creative exercise: “When you’re coming at things from a place of fear, you block what’s possible,” says Viola. “Instead of trying to solve all the world’s problems, I’m facilitating conditions for more awareness—and going one garden at a time.” violagardens.com

VIOLA GARDEN DESIGN, INC.

“I design and build modern, ecologically relevant, custom landscapes to fortify and engage relationships between human nature and Mother Nature.”

C

alifornians have a passion for nature and a dedication to preserving and enhancing the environment that is reflected in their desire for beautiful and sustainable native landscapes. Helping them achieve these goals is Jessica Viola and her accomplished team at Viola Garden Design, Inc. Since 2007, Viola has been providing her clients with the highest level of expertise and care, which has resulted in breathtaking gardens and landscapes that both complement and conserve California’s exceptional ecosystems. “From the majestic coastline and forests in the north to the beaches, canyons and deserts in the south, I’ve always been inspired by California’s natural landscapes,” Viola says. “That love and respect for our organic environment led me to embrace the principles of permaculture—a design system based on working with the patterns of nature.” Viola also works closely with her clients so that she can understand how they live and what they and their families want and need in their outdoor environments.

“My clients are integral to my creative process,” the 2022 Gold List honoree adds. “Building collaborative relationships fosters the clear communication, permission, artistic exploration and executable direction we need to achieve landscapes that are compelling, thoughtful, detailed and emotive.”

What sort of projects are you most known for? Our projects are mainly residential, but I have had the opportunity to work on a number of commercial projects as well as collaborate on architectural case studies by icons like Rodney Walker, Albert Frey and Rudolph Schindler. Talk about your book. A Hundred Bells (ahundredbells.com) is a richly illustrated guide to the principles of ecological design and how they can be applied to living joyfully and abundantly within and outside the garden. What do you consider to be your greatest success? One of the most meaningful projects I’ve ever undertaken was at the Venice Community Housing Youth Building. I taught a group of at-risk youths core skills that they used to design food and pollinator gardens at a Venice housing project.

Sunlight streams through the front entryway of this newly built home in Pacific Palisades. Designers James Magni and Jason Kalman played on the exterior stonework by choosing travertine floors from Walker Zanger. The leather bench is of their own design, and the artworks are by Robert Kelly and Karl Pilato.

I

t’s important that there’s a sense of craft in our houses,” says architect Russell Shubin. “This one is terraced into the hillside and its materials—wood, steel, stone—come together to create beauty.” It’s a feeling of intention that “gives houses the soulfulness people want,” he adds. And for these homeowners, a young family relocating from Hong Kong, it was also a chance to experience the California lifestyle. Shubin’s design shielded the structure from the street while giving the entire house sweeping L.A. canyon views and cooling breezes. It was just what the couple envisioned. Shubin, though, admits the property came with steep topography, “They bought a tricky site,” he says, “so we embedded the house into the hillside, and the great room forms the plinth that the other volumes sit on top of.” Viewed from the street side, wood and limestone covers the lion’s share of the façade and gives the home privacy. Stepping down a cascade of stone stairs, past monolith blocks and tidy shrubbery, feels almost like entering a sacred garden—the latter a collaboration with landscape architect Rob Maday. A glass wall at the front door reveals the first glimpse of the interiors, a sitting room and the husband’s office, and two stairwells. One leads up to the family’s bedrooms, and one leads down to the great room, wine cellar, a guest suite, and the pool terrace, where landmarks like the Getty Museum dot the view. The architect took great pains, though, to ensure the main living area read bright and welcoming. “We did intense light studies to determine how light would penetrate down since we didn’t want it to feel like you’re in a basement,” says Shubin. He employed some clever tricks, like a subtle skylight above the television wall, but it’s really the rear façade made nearly entirely of glass that ensures there’s no shortage of daylight. “It was complicated to get out of the ground on this one,” says Tyler Udall, who, with Ron Udall, served as one of the project’s general contractors. “It’s not a massive home, but it is complex.”

Designers James Magni and Jason Kalman’s approach to the interiors reflects a similarly tranquil and rooted feeling. “Given our clientele and their art collections, our work tends to read as art-focused with a museum-quality,” says Kalman, “but this home was specifically meant to evoke a warm and family-friendly feeling.” Though, Magni notes, they didn’t sacrifice style: “The clients’ willingness to build a furniture collection meant we could mix contemporary designs and pieces with a little history.” The first key purchase for the home was the Edward Wormley La Gondola sofa in the upstairs lounge. More vintage pieces quickly followed suit, including a Franco Albini desk for the adjacent office, and Poul Jensen lounge chairs for the couple’s bedroom, where the designers also created custom elements like a wood headboard with built in nightstands. Vintage Franco Buzzi armchairs found a home in the great room’s sitting area, and Vladimir Kagan dining chairs were paired with a custom table by Napa Valley woodworker Florian Roeper. Magni and Kalman also added a pair of dining benches of their own design. “We wanted something different, more participatory with the space,” Kalman explains of the leather-covered seating. “They break down the formality a little bit.” And as the homeowners enjoy cooking, the duo brought in specialist Laurie Haefele of Haefele Design to collaborate on the kitchen. “It’s adjacent to the dining area, so we wanted it to have less of a traditional kitchen feel,” he continues. “The blackened-steel hood is beautiful, and the appliances are integrated into the walnut.” Along the way, Magni also encouraged the couple’s developing art collection, which includes works by local artists Betty Gold and Christina Craemer. A similarly collected aesthetic event extends to the outdoor spaces—key for the couple looking forward to embracing a California lifestyle. To that end, the designers sourced pieces from multiple outdoor lines. The result is entertaining areas that feel equally layered and intentional. “The strength of this house is the seamlessness of its exterior, interiors and landscape,” notes Shubin. “And when everything feels like ‘one,’ a house just has a more compelling story.”

nterior designer Raili Clasen’s professional motto is “great design— with a wink.” That spirit factors heavily into the new Corona del Mar home she conceived for her Silicon Valley-based clients. “This was always going to be a second home for a family with three active little boys,” she says. “Their home in Northern California is much more, shall we say, ‘serious,’ and I really wanted to push the envelope and give them a place they could come and put their feet up and relax, without for a minute sacrificing the things that would achieve the level of design they wanted.” The family hired architect Cynthia Childs to design their new place on a 45-foot lot just a few houses from the ocean. “At the very beginning of the project, they were thinking of a transitional style of architecture,” Childs recalls. “After meeting them and seeing their fun, smart, talented selves, I knew I could be a bit more edgy and creative with the home. We pushed the envelope a bit and each step of the way they were open and considered lots of possibilities.” To that end, Childs and general contractor Matt McClure crafted a home that marries timeless elements of design, like the painted white brick on the exterior, with contemporary ones, like the steel windows. She meticulously designed the structure to have indentations along the sides, allowing each room to boast windows or glass doors on two walls, rather than one. “I wanted there to be a real sense of natural light in this home, which is why we have an interior courtyard as well. The abundant light lends to the relaxed, indoor-outdoor feel that we were after all along.” As an added bonus, the interior courtyard also allows for more private outdoor living. Meanwhile, when it came to outfitting the home, Clasen used Australian beach houses as her muse. “The Australians have this great way of delivering coastal vibes, but the architecture and the finishes are still quite modern,” she says. Clasen studied that look and thoughtfully furnished the spaces with finishes and accessories that delivered an effect of similar stylish ease, with a minimalist materials palette of white walls, natural wood and black steel. “I wanted everything to talk to each other in the main spaces,” explains the interior designer. “That’s why I put the same steel windows

on the upper cabinets in the kitchen that appear on the exterior of the house. We tried to have design elements that have a ‘friend’ in each space, whether it was a hit of color or a repeat of fabric.” The wood elements—like the walnut floors, the plank beams in the ceiling and the walnut paneling throughout—warm the crisp white walls and soften the industrial elements. Clasen used color sparingly but made an impression when she did, from the olive green in the sitting room to the shades of blue in the watercolor mural in the primary bedroom. “The family gave me a lot of freedom when it came to some of these ‘aha’ moments in the house,” she says, pointing to the powder room with a print that proclaims, “I like it. What is it?” or the bright blue sink in the downstairs bath. Clasen even worked a surprise “hello” into the front Dutch door—the word is carved into the wood. In the same way, light fixtures—like the wide, nautical pendant over the kitchen island, the cascading pendants in the dining room, and the airy lights in the playroom—deliver an element of surprise against the backdrop of right angles and clean lines. Clasen custom-designed nearly every piece of furniture to be refined but never austere, to invite more lounging than looking. “Nothing is off-limits for the boys. There’s meant to be a flow from one room to the next—and from inside to outside. When all the doors are open, the family and their many friends come and go, in and out, and there’s nothing so precious about the spaces that they can’t be used by everyone.” One of the most cherished spaces is the outdoor living room, a space Childs calls a modern beach home’s version of a gracious Southern front porch. “They are out here all the time, and because there’s plenty of foot traffic on the street, they can people watch, or invite friends up for a drink. It’s quite a fun spot.” And when the family wants a more secluded place to congregate—but still wants to enjoy the southern California climate—they gather around the table that anchors the interior courtyard. It was here that Clasen left a not-so-subtle reminder to her clients: a graphic artwork that spells P-L-A-Y. “Every wall, every corner, every piece of art—it was all about who they are as a family and the joy we hoped this house would bring to them,” she says with a smile.

The living area of this Corona del Mar home was dubbed the “happy hour” room by interior designer Raili Clasen. Anchored by a Katy Skelton coffee table and Allied Maker pendants, a spindle-back chair with cushions in a Zak + Fox material and a trio of club chairs by Community Manufacturing covered in a Ralph Lauren linen create an inviting spot to gather. Underfoot is a Rosemary Hallgarten alpaca rug from Thomas Lavin.

Above: Clasen used Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace throughout the home, including in the living room. She turned to Community Manufacturing for the generous sectional in gray linen and the barrel swivel chair. Blackened brass Allied Maker sconces echo the dark finish on the fireplace and the hue of the Armadillo carpet, while the coffee table from Stahl + Band does the same with the walnut paneling. Opposite: For the breakfast nook, the interior designer secured the custom white oak table from Yeehaw Woodworks. The banquette, also custom in white oak, boasts cushions upholstered in Pierre Frey fabric from Kneedler Fauchère. The plank barstools are dyed black ash, from Nickey Kehoe. On the wall is artwork sourced through 1stdibs.

oe Davidson’s airy studio behind his home in Hancock Park is filled with sculptures that aren’t quite what they seem. Boxers’ speed bags lay broken open like overripe figs, devoid of color. Grease-stained hand towels hang along a wall. Balloons in bubbly pastel hues slump one atop the other in anthropomorphic columns. Davidson renders these familiar forms in unexpected materials: slip-cast porcelain for the speed bags, glazed porcelain for the towels, cast Hydrocal for the freestanding balloons and Aqua-Resin for the ones destined for walls. Viewers often feel an immediate impulse to hold or touch them. “I love that,” he says. “It’s a real testament to people having not just an intellectual and visual response to the pieces but a tactile one.” In the mid-’90s, he began playing with themes of sports and archetypal masculinity with baseball bats composed of rubber, and he continues to find “poetry” in sculptures that touch on gravity and impermanence. “It’s such an interesting subject to mine,” he says. “And balloons—which float away and are ephemeral—are the antithesis of what we’re talking about when we talk about gravity.” Drawing inspiration from Fluxus artists, Dadaism and the Arte Povera movement, Davidson likes to see what develops when he steps into the studio and begins manipulating forms and materials. “I like working in an area that makes me uncomfortable, which makes me more sensitive and helps me stay in the moment,” he says. “It’s incredibly frustrating and challenging when you’re not good at something, but it’s also a place for humility and growth.” That’s part of the reason he decided to start working in porcelain. He points to a grouping of shrouded objects, which he creates by draping cheesecloth soaked in porcelain slip over a form of his making. “After it sets, you throw it in the kiln, and that burns out the cloth. Sometimes they come out perfectly; sometimes they come out in 20 pieces.” No matter what Davidson is working with, there’s a thread that runs through his work. “I touch on heavy subjects by sliding in the back door,” he says. “Even though I’m using symbols of beauty or of fleeting beauty, there’s a constant acknowledgment of mortality that’s been super fascinating to me historically. It’s an entry point to talk about larger things.”

Whether he’s playing with curvaceous balloon-like forms (below) or exploring the possibilities of denim insulation, the work of artist Joe Davidson (opposite) touches on deeper issues. “These totemic structures are about gravity and the impermanence of life, while at the same time being visually provocative,” he says.

magine a village, a patchwork of stone-walled, tile-roofed buildings, all perched on a windswept promontory. Envision rugged hillsides all around, and distantly, below the lifting fog, the sea. The thought might immediately conjure up visions of Corsica or Calabria, but designer Dara K. Barker and her husband, Conan, have created the scene on 5 acres high above Montecito—a spot that Conan first happened upon during a hike while on vacation with his parents decades ago. “When we visited after I found it online, he said, ‘I’ve been here before,’ ” Barker recalls. “At the bottom of the driveway was a stream that would sometimes flow over the road, and he remembered that because it was so odd.” Destiny having spoken, the couple purchased the property, intending to update its small and dilapidated Spanish-style house into a weekend retreat. But fate intervened again, this time with building codes that required they start from scratch. So the Barkers decided to think bigger— and build a village. Because of the site’s prominence on the landscape—its views stretch so far, the fire department has long used it as a lookout point— the local architectural review board “was very interested in the new house not looking like one big mass but instead being broken down into distinct volumes,” says architect David Pascu. “We were, however, allowed to build an unlimited number of accessory structures under 800 square feet.” Working with his partner Trevor Abramson, Pascu and the team started to break up the program into a main house, garage, workshop and guest house with varying rectilinear forms and rooflines. “We invented the narrative of an old European hill town,” says Pascu, “where you can stand on a balcony and see a neighboring rooftop right at your feet.” Around these buildings, landscape architect Scott Menzel built the story’s setting from the ashes of the Thomas Fire, which passed through the property during early construction, by incorporating a concise palette of native plants. “The house is very clean, very simple, and so I felt the landscape needed to respond to that, while also juxtaposing those qualities with nature,” he says. The entry path evokes a Mediterranean garden with its border of Spanish lavender, whiteflowering mock orange pittosporum, silvery

westringia and chartreuse autumn moor grass, all punctuated by imported, century-old olive trees. Around the pool, Menzel incorporated pink-plumed muhly grass, lavender and Mexican sage; beyond these, the hillside is planted with indigenous California holly, coyote bush and California lilacs. “As you get away from the structures, it becomes a little more organic and ultimately, we transition to a predominantly native landscape,” Menzel explains. In the main residence, the plot thickens: “The Barkers wanted a modern house, but they liked the feeling of things that had been there a long time,” Pascu says, “so they started to gravitate toward this concept of an old stone building with a modern infill.” The view of the kitchen from the living room, for example, “is like looking into the shell of a rustic barn, but with a sleek European kitchen inside.” This contrast allowed the team to be playful with elements like the riser-less staircase, “which is a modern concept, but the treads are wrapped with reclaimed wood for a rustic feel,” Pascu says. The general contractors, led by Leonard Unander Sr., project manager Leonard Unander Jr. and site superintendent David Kruger, “painstakingly matched the grain to make it look like a solid piece of wood,” he adds. In most rooms, where mountain and sea views dominate, floor-to-ceiling corner windows expand the panoramas. But in the den, custom bookcases and low-beamed ceilings create a more intimate feel. “We wanted a room that was not all glass; a place where we can curl up and not feel exposed at night,” Barker says. Antique furnishings further ground the aerie. “I love mixing things that are eclectic and unexpected but that have a good hand and a good story,” says Barker, who took on the interiors. Her finds range from the living room’s early1900s wood workbench to the dining room’s vintage églomisé mirror. Her most treasured objects are textiles, often displayed in surprising ways. In the entryway, framed antique Chinese peasant skirt panels hang on the wall. Large poolside cushions are covered in vintage Turkish rugs. And in the living room, an antique Japanese textile adorns the plaster fireplace wall—for now, anyway. “I believe you should move your art and furnishings around so you can appreciate them anew,” Barker says. “I think the worst thing you can do is say, ‘Now it’s perfect.’ ” And so, this home’s story continues.

For the living room, designer and homeowner Dara K. Barker selected a sectional by Vioski that incorporates a console table painted to match the piece’s Fabricut upholstery and an Elan Atelier coffee table from Quintus. Anne Kirk Textiles’ linen-wool weave blend covers Lee Industries swivel chairs, while an antique Japanese textile from Santa Fe’s John Ruddy Gallery adorns the fireplace wall. Hovering above is a light fixture from Kneedler Fauchère, while draperies in a Pindler material create a cosseting feel.

It’s just one switch and you can be there in the middle of winter.” Nydam Landscape Construction installed the landscaping.
