LETTER EDITOR’S

Nuts & Bolts I recently purchased a bronze acorn charm necklace cast through the lost-wax technique. The fact that it is handcrafted by a delightful Florentine artist and designer, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at her studio was part of my attraction, but another reason that I was drawn to the piece was the acorn’s symbolic meaning: great and wondrous things can emerge from small and humble beginnings. That’s often the case in design and in other creative pursuits. You start with a seed, a kernel of an idea, that requires nurturing and attention to grow into something extraordinary. Many of you are embarking on a new design project, tinkering with an idea or building something from the get-go. I hope you embrace the fits-and-starts of the kickoff and savor the long journey into full potential.

ONE TO WATCH ATELIERXKM

Dubbed “haute couture furniture,” the furnishings of Los Angelesbased designer Kelly Martin pay homage to the sartorial set. The latest iterations of AtelierxKM, her bespoke line (available through Una Malan), riff on fashion-forward tailoring, pairing natural woods with blackened steel accents. Here, the designer shares her stylistic inspirations. atelierxkm.com Tell us about your interest in fashion. Before going into interior design, I toyed with fashion— I was always sketching furniture or dresses. Once I started AtelierxKM conceptually, I wanted to find a way to marry furnishings and fashion. Is there an emotional dimension to your pieces? My style is influenced by my grandmother, who was in the fashion world.

I inherited her Chanel coats and I love that personal connection. I wanted to create pieces that were similarly timeless. How have your designs evolved? Through research into classic pieces by Dior and Chanel, as well as newer designers like Dion Lee. I figure out what parts of each designer I admire and play on that. Tell us about your latest launches. The Dion coffee table accentuates its tailored form with construction cutouts; the Haider side table plays on darts and seaming; and the Pierre coffee table (shown left) is a take on Cardin’s avant-garde shapes. They’re made-to-order pieces, like painting commissions— there’s an appreciation for craftsmanship again.

TRANSFORMATION This April, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego’s La Jolla campus reopens after a four-year, $105-million renovation directed by Selldorf Architects. The expansion quadruples the previous gallery square footage, giving the museum enough space to display temporary exhibitions alongside its permanent collection—a first in its 80-year history. The inaugural show, “Niki de Saint Phalle in the 1960s,” is a collaboration with The Menil Collection and examines early works by the French artist. Meanwhile, the permanent galleries will display works from the 1960s and ’70s Light and Space art movement. Rounding out the redesign is a new café, terraces all around the oceanfront building and the conversion of a parking lot into a public art park. mcasd.org

THE LATEST OPENINGS OF LOCAL LUXURY SHOWROOMS ARE KEEPING SOCAL AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE DESIGN INDUSTRY.

AKER INTERIORS In Los Angeles’ Historic Core, a 1925 loft is now a combined showroom and studio for Aker Interiors. Designer Gabrielle Aker’s vision for this renovation was to create an inviting, comfortable space to highlight her favorite vendors. “We partnered with the companies we love and that share our family-run firm’s ethos of ethical, handcrafted design,” she says. Pieces from Armadillo, Allied Maker and clé, just to name a few, are among a growing list of featured brands. akerinteriors.com

Mick Fox and Dino Raimondi, the duo behind Palm Springs design studio Fig + Nash, recently opened their second retail boutique. The new showroom, located on El Paseo in Palm Desert, features a variety of high-end furnishings, fine art, wall coverings, lighting and tabletop items—including Christofle silver, Lalique crystal and Baobab Collection candles. A library-like room is also home to a selection of Assouline titles. An upstairs loft space doubles as a design studio helmed by Gabriela Helesicova, the firm’s managing designer, who oversees model and private home projects in the area. figandnash.com

Sustainability-focused Kalon Studios’ first showroom is now rooted in L.A.’s Atwater Village neighborhood. Co-founder Michaele Simmering and partner Johannes Pauwen aim to use their new location—which includes a spacious rooftop—as a gathering and event space for the local creative community. Displayed alongside their own collections are pieces from local makers such as Adam Silverman, Bari Ziperstein, Ryosuke Yazaki, Ramsey Conder, Brendan Ravenhill, Victoria Morris, Lakes Studio and Common Body. kalonstudios.com

KVADRAT Danish textile brand Kvadrat has opened its second U.S. location in L.A.’s Arts District, cementing its longstanding partnership with French designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec. The new outpost, designed with an interior structure of sustainably grown Douglas fir, includes work zones on the upper level and social spaces on the main floor. Its walls are lined with shelving and hanging systems by the Bouroullec brothers and with textile panels by Erwan. The design is focused on materiality, color and engineering—all cornerstones of the brand. kvadrat.dk

AS LIBRARIES CLIMB TO THE TOP OF CLIENTS’ WISH LISTS, DESIGNERS RESPOND WITH ARRESTING ROOMS FOR MORE THAN JUST READING. W R I T T E N BY M A I L E P I N G E L

Designers have long delighted in creating home libraries. In fact, legendary decorator Dorothy Draper even encouraged the idea among her bibliophile clientele. “Don’t hesitate to start a library, a collection of books on any subject that interests you is a joy to have!” remarked Draper. But today’s libraries serve as more than just a refuge for reading—they are spaces to gather with family and entertain guests. Ranging from studious to swank, libraries can project a

refined spirit or a joyful energy. Whether you prefer books, magazines or reading on your favorite device, a library provides “a different environment within the home,” explains designer Michael Aiduss. “It’s about shutting the rest of the world off, collecting your thoughts and feeling a sense of relaxation.” But designer Joe Lucas warns playfully: be ready to shop as it always takes more books to fill a library than one anticipates!

“ We turned this Charlotte, North Carolina, living room into a snug library, but it’s really like a family room. Wood builtins and gold-flecked red wallpaper feel unexpected, while a hidden bar makes it a great place to have drinks with guests or simply enjoy the cozy atmosphere.” –BARRIE BENSON, BARRIE BENSON INTERIOR DESIGN

“ Adding a little whimsy, like the velvet tête-à-tête in the middle of this Los Altos, California, library, makes the space feel fun, plus there’s a games table for the kids and a pair of wing chairs for the adults. It shifts the center of focus away from the kitchen to create a place where this family of readers can relax together.” –ANN LOWENGART, ANN LOWENGART INTERIORS

“ Give your library a more modern vibe with a pretty paint color—try picking a shade from a book spine and add pull-out shelves to create an extra work surface. “It’s all about creating an enveloping ambiance with comfortable places to sit, beautiful lighting and good acoustics to quiet any noise. Books help to create an alluring atmosphere, but don’t forget to think about a ‘wow’ factor and scale, too—like the large antique globe we used in this Greenwich, Connecticut, library—as well as displaying collections that resonate with you.”

FOUR NEW TITLES TO UP THE INTRIGUE—AND BEAUTY— OF YOUR HOME LIBRARY

YSL Lexicon: An ABC of the Fashion, Life, and Inspirations of Yves Saint Laurent Edited by Martina Mondadori and Stephan Janson Its publication timed to commemorate Yves Saint Laurent’s first runway show 60 years ago, the new tome, edited by Cabana founder Martina Mondadori and designer Stephan Janson, a co-curator of the current pan-Paris exhibition, Yves Saint Laurent Aux Musées, explores the many facets of YSL’s life through a playful exploration of words. “Our book,” write Mondadori and Janson, “seeks to offer a series of evocations in the form of an alphabet, using the words he liked, those which had a particular meaning for him.” Taking on the people, places and concepts that inspired the designer are a host of high-profile contributors including Hamish Bowles on Haute Couture and Marian McEvoy on Jardin Majorelle. Illustrating the book are images from YSL’s archive, set against lavish textiles in truly iconic style. rizzoliusa.com

By Andrea Monath Schumacher “I poured through my portfolio and chose exclusive projects— it felt like the right time to show them,” says the designer of her debut book. Colorful inspiration abounds, along with Monath Schumacher’s helpful design tips: faux bois cut velvet elevates a beachy vibe, while a red front door encourages good luck and positive energy. “I want readers to be inspired to live large at home, and this book shows them where, and how, to take risks.” gibbs-smith.com

Lotusland Forward by Marc Appleton Only an opera singer could envision a garden as theatrical as the famed Lotusland in Montecito, California, and Ganna Walska’s botanical masterpiece—featuring more than 3,400 plants— has been captivating visitors for 30 years. “Hers was obsessive botanical collecting,” writes architect Marc Appleton. Featuring photographs by Lisa Romerein, Lotusland is a verdant treat for anyone enchanted by gardens. rizzoliusa.com

SCHUMACHER DEBUTS OUT-OF-THE-BOX DINING ROOM CLASSICS IDEAL FOR MODERN LIVING. W R I T T E N B Y M A R I O LÓ P E Z- C O R D E R O

Call it a revival of the highest order: When Schumacher created its Editions furniture line, the firm set out to bring back the iconoclastic approach of a bygone time. “We wanted to craft furniture with up-and-coming designers from around the globe to recreate the period around the mid-20th-century— a time when people like Charles and Ray Eames were breaking the mold with original pieces that weren’t just derivatives of old forms,” says creative director Dara Caponigro. “We were looking to curate fresh, authentic furniture that spoke to a dining experience where people want to linger.” Danish designer Charlotte Høncke took a hygge-centric approach, warming up a steel-framed chair with a cozy fabric back to create a cocoonlike atmosphere. “You feel like you’re snuggled into a nest,” says Caponigro. Høncke also devised a table marrying Scandi practicality with inspired details like a soft, curved edge apron. Salla Luhtasela and Wesley Walters, principals of the Helsinki-based firm Kaksikko, used wood to fashion pieces that combine urbanity with country house ease—a yin-yang match adaptable to many homes. Take their Mokki chair, available in a range of painted finishes, its upholstered seat and rail allow for endless customization. The duo’s reinterpretation of a farmhouse table

LUXESOURCE.COM

The Editions collection by Schumacher includes, clockwise from top, the Mokki chair and dining table by Kaksikko, designer Charlotte Høncke’s Puffin chair and the Rocco chair by Moving Mountains, all of which sit in front of Porter Teleo’s Binary wallcovering.

packs subtle upgrades into a deceptively simple design where every detail counts. When Syrette Lew of Brooklyn-based Moving Mountains was tasked with crafting an upholstered piece, she went sexy. The designer conceived a curving dining chair with pieced panels that highlight its geometry while allowing for versatility in other spaces of the home. “It would work equally well in the living room,” says Caponigro. Her table design, meanwhile, crafted from two pieces of

solid wood, embodies the gravity-defying proportions and poetry of sculpture. What all the pieces have in common is a dedication to quality, ecologically sourced materials that are expertly crafted. There’s nothing remotely “mass” about them. “They’re not rolling off a factory floor somewhere,” Schumacher’s creative director notes. “Each piece will be numbered as an edition and made by hand in Italy.” Now that’s a revival worth waiting for. fschumacher.com

For Keeps DESIGNER MALLY SKOK REFLECTS ON THE TREASURED COLLECTION OF OYSTER PLATES AMASSED AT HER CAPE COD HOME.

Just down the road from our house overlooking Buzzards Bay in West Falmouth, Massachusetts, is an amazing antiques barn. It was there, 25 years ago, when I found three beautiful hand-painted oyster plates. I didn’t purposefully set out to start a collection, but I fell in love with them instantly, and the rest is history. My mother taught me to love houses, and to layer them. Things don’t have to be terribly expensive to be special. If you love something, buy it and put it on a shelf—that’s sort of our family motto. I buy what appeals to me in the moment, and that’s how the process of collecting starts organically. If something is meaningful to you—if it speaks to your heart—it doesn’t matter what it is. That’s how you end up with an authentic collection. Slowly but surely, my collection has grown over the years, and I’m running out of room to display it. Soon I’ll need to build an addition onto the house just for my oyster plates! When I arrive each summer, I spend several hours wandering from room to room, gazing upon these objects imbued with so many memories. Being back on the Cape marks the beginning of lazy days and good times spent with family and friends. That is what this house, and my collection, symbolizes to me. I’ve been collecting for a quarter of a century—too many pieces to count!— but those first three plates I found in the antiques barn down the road are still my favorite. I have warned everyone in my family: They can break anything in this house, even my heart, but not my oyster plates.

LLOYD FLANDERS lloydflanders.com |

The more comfortable a space is, the more it will be used. This is an adage touted by many a knowledgeable interior designer, but it isn’t always applied to the open air. That is, unless Lloyd Flanders is involved. “This is why we focus on durability meets luxuriousness,” says Jessie Flanders, the company’s vice president of marketing. “Inexpensive outdoor pieces will last a year or two, but high-end furniture can endure for decades, with minimal maintenance and a superior level of comfort.” And, the brand has collections to suit nearly any aesthetic, from contemporary to Hamptons chic and the Southern in feel. But when it comes to the design concept, Jessie has another bit of advice: “A cohesive indoor-outdoor flow can be achieved through consistency in

“These days, outdoor living means more than the occasional weekend get-together. This is where we relax, entertain and enjoy family time.”

color palette, materials or furniture shapes. A drastic change will make the spaces seem divided, so it’s best to stick with a common theme.”

SECRET TO LONGEVITY: LLOYD LOOM “Our proprietary Lloyd Loom® wicker is a natural fiber wicker fabric with long-lasting, high-performance Durium polyester coating for outdoor durability and flexibility,” Jessie says. “The continuous weave avoids burrs and cracking and eliminates visible material ends. It won’t fade over time due to sun exposure or rain and is available in 20 custom finishes.” Not to mention, Lloyd Loom products can be completely repainted to alter the look later. “Lloyd Loom offerings are handcrafted to be heirloom pieces that are passed down for generations.”

BE BOLDLY BESPOKE

Asked to share the latest favorites, Jessie points to color and creativity. “Consumers have access to an endless supply of design inspiration, and it has resulted in a love of customization, mixing and matching, and unique fabrics and finishes,” she says. “Our bolder finishes, like Peacock, Terracotta and Stillwater, are soaring in popularity.”

SOLSTICE solstice

The Solstice collection features clean lines, a high back, and a sleek frame that enhances the European inspired design. The fully upholstered look, and contemporary comfort make for an outdoor collection that will be enjoyed for generations.

The Southport collection features a sleek frame design, accented with a beveled extrusion that captures the classic loom panels. With the choice of color on both the frame and wicker insert one can customize to any outdoor space.

BATH + KITCHEN LIVING

Growing up in sunny Miami, designer Constanza Collarte walked through dozens of orange groves on her way to school each day— all part of the charm found in this once-sleepy city by the sea. Fast forward a few years, and a couple more high-rise buildings later, a booming metropolis was born. But Collarte always knew she would one day return to her roots. After spending years living in New York and abroad, a 1930s Mediterranean-style residence in Coconut Grove—complete with a breathtaking outdoor area—ultimately lured her back home again. collarte.co What an amazing oasis! We like to think of it as our secret garden. Having a lush, enclosed outdoor space has made all the difference, especially recently! We spend all our time out here, whether we are having family over for dinner or hanging by the pool with our kids. One of the home’s selling points was the Fernando Wong– designed landscaping, and while we have added a few plantings here and there, his vision has remained. Constanza Collarte, founder of Collarte Interiors, sits outside her Coconut Grove abode near Miami. The table is set with a Zojora tablecloth and glasses, Penny Morrison plates, Laguiole flatware and flowers by Parrish Designs.

“ I love when materials are truly authentic. Much like ourselves, they should have a life and age over time.” – C O N S TA N Z A C O L L A R T E

What about the interiors? As much as we live outdoors, our kitchen is the most heavily trafficked room, and we really tried to maximize the layout when the house was redesigned. It took a lot of planning, but the space is now open and filled with light from the doors leading out to the yard. The ‘back workings’ of the room, like the fridge, bar, pantry and storage, are also in one general area to allow for flow and functionality, which is key. Talk to us about the materials. Different layers and textures in a kitchen can add a lot. We worked with an amazing millworker who wire-brushed the cabinetry for a subtle effect. Everything from the creamy countertops to the pale wood has a hint of lilac, which is a nice connecting thread. On a trip to Morocco, I fell in love with Zellige tile—its imperfections and the way light plays off the surface—so we used them for the bar backsplash.

BATH + KITCHEN LIVING

What’s your entertaining ethos? It’s all about indoor-outdoor living. We do a lot of entertaining alfresco—we even had my sister’s wedding out here! I’m a big collector, and I like to pick up little trinkets when I’m traveling, like salt cellars or textiles, to use on the table. The key to entertaining, for me, is continuously mixing and matching pieces. I must admit, we have a lot of the same people over, so I keep it fresh by using pieces in different ways, but the idea is to make it look effortless and easy. Tell us about the table. The exterior really informs my choices. Everything is green and lush outside, so it’s nice to throw this floral pink tablecloth down to play off the bright camelia flowers in bloom. My grandmother’s delicate embroidered napkins and bright glasses add a sweet note, but the Penny Morrison plates are really the highlight. I lived in London for a while and became quite obsessed with all those charming British prints and patterns! The kitchen features cabinetry and millwork by Hector and Hector, Sub-Zero refrigeration and a Wolf range. Dornbracht faucets are paired with Amerisink basins, while tiles from clé decorate the bar backsplash.

Worlds Away

In Paul T. Liistro’s Westport, Connecticut, garden—which he has designed, installed and tended to over the past three decades—a metal gazebo provides an immersive late afternoon perch to enjoy the bucolic setting. “I like to sit and watch the sun go down between the trees,” he says. “The whole complexion of the garden changes.”

FAMILY AFFAIR “Chartreuse is my absolute favorite color,” effuses designer Samantha Liistro. A frequent staple across her interiors and personal wardrobe, it’s also the color of chamaecyparis trees that ring the Westport, Connecticut, garden, that her father, Paul T. Liistro, has lovingly cultivated over the past 35 years. A healthcare executive, sailor and self-taught landscape designer, Paul has poured his insatiable curiosity for the natural

world into this most resplendent of gardens. “When we purchased the property, I felt like Huckleberry Finn when he says he’s giving up on civilization and heading into the territory,” says Paul. Upon surveying the land—a virgin expanse of grass, forest and stream—he began sketching, and, like a tree taking root, the plot has since revealed itself in chapters. An all-pink rose garden (replete with a plumbed stone wall and dryad fountain) was inspired by the Elizabeth Park Conservancy in Hartford, snow-white Magnolia trees nod to Boston’s Commonwealth Avenue and a tidy pea gravel pavilion dotted with ornamental fountains and a table for two perpetuates a treasured memory. “I lived in Paris, near the

Luxembourg Gardens, while studying abroad at Parsons,” shares Samantha. When Paul came to visit at the end of the term, she knew just where to take him. “We were so inspired by all the lovely pools and places to sit. On the flight home, he took out his notebook and we began to sketch our own version.” Samantha fondly dubs the setting her “favorite place in the world,” and credits her father’s handiwork for much of her own approach to color and pattern. Recently, Paul and his wife Brenda hired their daughter to design a new first-floor addition housing a sumptuous primary bedroom suite. There, through an enormous picture window, Samantha has framed her father’s garden like a painting. samanthaliistro.com

CARVING A PATH Upon visiting his clients’ Woodside, California, property—a former equestrian farm with the beaten down dirt to prove it—landscape architect James Lord’s mission became clear. First, nurse the land back to health. Second, establish a thriving meadow. Along the way, a dreamy patchwork of soft rush, little bluestem and silver grass began to materialize. To enjoy the bounty, Lord, alongside partners Roderick Wyllie and Geoff di Girolamo, envisioned a series of crushed gravel footpaths undulating through the meadow like a soft breeze. Beyond providing the clients with their own parklike setting for daily strolls, the exuberant plant life has prompted the husband to embrace time-lapse photography, documenting such ephemera as the unfurling of cactus flowers. This luxuriant slowing, Lord believes, is imperative to mental health. “We blab on about the benefits of biophilia, but it’s all true! The alpha waves are going crazy when you’re out in nature,” he says. “This garden is curated with a spirit of delight and discovery, but there’s great calmness to it, too. It’s a world of its own.” sdisf.com

YOUNG AT HEART

“We were trying to create a bit of magic within the landscape—to invite imagination and play,” shares landscape architect Ed Hollander of this Southampton, New York, property. Inspired by the clients’ vibrant brood of young children, Hollander and residential studio director Melissa Reavis drew plans for a multi-faceted, experiential garden where sculptures seemingly dart amongst allées of pleached linden trees, a pollinator meadow teaming with joe-pye weed draws butterflies, and a life-sized chessboard offers entertainment, function and a focal point. A custom creation of sandstone and granite squares (in collaboration with the home’s interior designer Kelly Behun), the board easily morphs into a stylish party pavilion—the perfect springboard for a Gatsby-esque stroll through the fantasia beyond. “Everything is meant to be uncovered along a walk through this garden,” says Reavis. “Each time you turn a corner, a surprise is revealed.” hollanderdesign.com

SUSTAINABLE SANCTUARY While it may not be the first material that comes to mind when you think of luxury, aluminum is gaining popularity as a structural element used outdoors. “Years ago, it was all about aesthetics,” Kaminski says. “While aesthetics remain important today, functionality has helped consumers to maximize their investments.” Here are a few benefits to using aluminum:

Homeowners today don’t only want outdoor living areas that are beautiful. They also want their exterior investments to last for years to come. Greg Kaminski, president of Selt Systems Inc., says that’s why more and more of his clients are seeking out this future-forward material: aluminum. The weather-resistant product doesn’t rust, stain or rot, which means the pergola structures Selt creates require minimal annual maintenance and retain their value. The advanced pergola systems also feature integrated water drainage gutters and fully motorized roofs that can either be opened during sunny summer days or closed during rainy or snowy seasons. “You have the freedom to entertain and dine as you please—no matter the elements,” Kaminski says. What’s more, the electronic roofs can even be controlled with an app. “Our pergolas are a great example of a smart product,” he says.

• I t’s durable: Aluminum is corrosionresistant, meaning it won’t wear and tear when exposed to extreme elements. • I t’s sustainable: Considered the most environmentally friendly of all the metals, aluminum can be recycled over and over again. • I t’s low maintenance: Aluminum requires practically no upkeep compared to other materials like vinyl or wood. • It’s affordable: Aluminum not only outlasts other materials, but also tends to be a more economical choice.

Interior Design: David John Dick and Krista Schrock, Disc Interiors

M

uch like the tantalizing story arc of a dramatic TV series, interiors designed by David John Dick and Krista Schrock tend not to reveal themselves all at once. So when a Hollywood couple approached them to infuse their first home with a collected and casual style, the designers were intrigued. The 1928 Spanishstyle abode in Los Feliz had beautiful bones, but its fascinating homeowners were what really enticed them: Ross Duffer, co-creator of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, and his wife, director and screenwriter Leigh Janiak, whose Fear Street trilogy wades into a similar nostalgia-horror pool. As the designers got started, so did the plot twists. “Ross and Leigh pushed us out of our own comfort zone in terms of using more colors, patterns and eclectic pieces than we typically would,” recalls Dick. Since the house had been renovated by its previous owner, the project brief was strictly decorbased. To balance their clients’ desire for both a refuge from their busy professional lives and an appealing place to entertain friends and family, Dick and Schrock, co-founders and principals of Los Angeles-based Disc Interiors, combined contemporary, vintage and custom furnishings with the couple’s existing art collection to create a refined yet relaxed atmosphere. Anything deemed too fussy or precious was out. “That’s a common thread with our clients: To want a home that feels collected and put-together, but doesn’t seem overly decorated, ” explains Schrock. One early find firmly established the tone of the home: a vintage sofa upholstered in a striking motif depicting insects and birds of prey amid a tangle of vines. Given a starring role in the spacious living room, it may not have been plucked off the set of Stranger Things but it nods to a fanciful world nonetheless. “It’s one of those unexpected and slightly weird moments that start conversations,” says Schrock. “ ‘Playful’ is a word our clients used a lot, and that sofa has a vibe that was important for them—to not be so serious.” She and Dick paired the marquee piece with large-scale bespoke furnishings, including a 12-foot sofa bound in burnished velvet and a sizable walnut coffee table, to anchor the room. The designers applied this mix-and-match approach to the entire home, often letting a central piece lead the design. In the dining room,

for instance, midcentury chairs by Paul McCobb sparked the space’s treatment, comprised of a simple white oak table, a muted Tabriz rug and a handcrafted hutch from Mexico. Overhead, in striking contrast to the room’s traditional architecture, hangs a contemporary Capiz shell pendant that offers a hint of Moroccan ambiance. “It’s as if the furnishings have been collected from different places over time, even though we did it in less than a year,” Dick notes of the design choices. That level of cohesive curation appealed to Ross and Leigh, explains Schrock. “We don’t piecemeal things,” she states. “We’re the kind of design firm that shows mood boards, fabrics, rugs, textures, wood tones—all at the same time—and they appreciated that since they deeply understand visuals themselves.” Artwork, much of which the homeowners brought in from their former apartment, provided another pivotal cue for the designers. For the sunny breakfast room, Dick and Schrock, inspired by the vibrant hues of an artwork by Leanne Shapton, conceived an L-shaped banquette embroidered with a stripe that picks up the patterned dining chairs’ brick shades. “We didn’t go overboard with colors and prints,” says Schrock, “but we definitely used enough to make an impact.” Layers of texture are on display in the primary bedroom, where a custom upholstered bed joins a verdant Carl Malmsten midcentury sofa with a sinuous back that echoes the curves of the closet’s arched opening. The designers toned down what formerly were bright white walls, opting for a more subtle taupe hue, a shade that reappears in patterned bed fabrics accented with navy. Dick and Schrock pushed the envelope further in the guest bedrooms, layering patterns and textiles, including a statement wallpaper of oversize Matilija poppies in one of them. “All the rooms in this house are really large, especially the bedrooms and the living room, so everything we did was meant to bring in warmth and coziness that the house was lacking,” says Schrock. Sculptural lamps, set in nearly every room, are another way the designers amped up the ambiance. “They’re like art pieces you can touch and use every day,” muses Dick. The result is a residence that’s whimsical, warm and inviting—the antithesis of Stranger Things’ infamous shadowy “Upside Down” dimension. Comfortably ensconced in a space like this, who knows what inspiration might strike its visionary homeowners next?

Original to the 1928 Spanish-style abode, stained-glass details highlight a sunny space off the living room of Leigh Janiak and Ross Duffer’s Los Feliz home. Designers Krista Schrock and David John Dick of Disc Interiors combined vintage pieces with contemporary elements throughout the house. Here, overscale lounge chairs from Lawson-Fenning mingle with an oak coffee table from Martin & Brockett and a brass lamp by Thomas O’Brien.

The duo kept other details simple, adorning the windows with linen-cotton draperies, also from Kravet. The rug is from Lawrence of La Brea.

ostering a sense of togetherness has always been the most important thing for one Carmel Valley family—and they wanted their home to not only reflect that conviction, but encourage it. “They’re a big tribe of six, plus a dog, and the whole house circles around fun and games and family activities,” says Kari Arendsen, the founder and design principal of Solana Beach-based Intimate Living Interiors. “That’s a huge part of who they are,” explains her partner and the firm’s lead interior designer, Tory Peterson. What began as a modest refresh to their northwest San Diego Mediterranean-style abode (“we were just going to add a bedroom and expand the kitchen,” remembers the wife) quickly spun larger, culminating in a nearly full-home renovation as the couple’s dreams expanded. “We love to entertain; we’re the house that hosts all the family functions and where all the kids’ friends come,” the wife says, noting a wish list that included a home theater, game room, wine cave and vast outdoor kitchen, among other ideas. “Our intention was to create a real gathering spot.” Or as Arendsen puts it, “They wanted this house to have everything. Our goal was to keep it organic and seamless, yet have surprises tucked around every corner to optimize their desire to have fun in every room.” Architect William Hayer reimagined the family’s home to realize their vision, recasting the existing layout as well as adding square footage—and to do so, the house was taken down to the studs. “They needed more bedrooms, more outdoor activity areas and more indoor ones too,” he says. The kitchen was extended with pocket doors connecting it to a sprawling outdoor cooking and dining loggia; the family gathering space was expanded and linked to a new game room and wine cave fitted with a secret speakeasy. The garage was reimagined as a home theater and a new children’s wing designed to contain a lofted

playroom and additional bedrooms. “There wasn’t really anything we didn’t touch,” says builder Mark Agee. “It’s practically a whole new house.” Open to the outdoors, the renovated home now takes full advantage of its semi-rural setting. “It’s tiered and perched on an acre, so there are different levels to this experience,” Peterson explains, pointing out the variety of outdoor spaces that balance the diverse and expansive interiors. The exterior property has morphed into a play space for children and adults alike: There’s a futsal court, a viewing pavilion with bleachers and an underground trampoline, as well as a grotto and an infinity pool looking out over the canyon. An exterior living room with custom channel tufted sectionals and a television creates another space to gather around. In keeping with the family’s vibrant lifestyle, Arendsen and Peterson reined in the home’s palette by relying on natural hues and organic materials such as marble, white oak and limestone. “It’s very neutral, with tones that are native to the area,” explains Arendsen. Confirming the home’s kid-friendly vibe, the interior designers upholstered custom pieces in high-performance fabrics and conceived case goods (including the dining room’s arresting buffet and a plethora of dining and coffee tables) that comfortably welcome the active clan and their guests. These bespoke pieces are interspersed with vintage finds either sourced on buying trips that ranged from Texas to Bali or pulled from the inventory of Intimate Living Interiors’ retail showroom, ILI Be Home. To top off the project, the firm designed a wall-mounted ring toss game, customized with a family logo and fitted into the game room. “We always try to do something special for our clients that nods to how we interpret them,” explains Arendsen. Adds the homeowner, “They definitely captured our family’s personality, how we’re all about fun and active entertaining. Plus, it’s a comfortable, very livable and functional home. It’s exactly what we wanted.”

In the living room of this renovated Carmel Valley residence, interior designers Kari Arendsen and Tory Peterson arranged an elegant entertaining area beside their clients’ baby grand piano, with custom armchairs and a bespoke sofa upholstered in a Perennials performance fabric, both from the curated collection of their retail showroom, ILI Be Home. The vintage carved wood coffee table was found in Bali and the hand-knotted rug is from Jaipur Rugs. Sherwin-Williams’ Futon, a creamy white used throughout the home, adds a warm tone.

Opposite: The family room’s cozy seating arrangement—composed of an extra deep sectional upholstered in a Perennials fabric, leather swivel chairs and oversize oak nesting coffee tables, all custom pieces from the ILI Be Home Collection—creates an inviting spot in the airy space. Architect William Hayer utilized reclaimed oak beams from Vintage Timberworks throughout the house to add texture to the home’s high ceilings.

Balancing Act An L.A. sculptor’s mobiles pay homage to the resilience of nature. W R I T T E N BY M O N I Q U E M C I N T O S H P H O T O G R A P H Y BY C A R M E N C H A N

longside her fellow Angelenos, sculptor Karolina Maszkiewicz watched, heartbroken, as the Woolsey Fire blazed through Los Angeles and Ventura counties in 2018. Nature had always informed her work, from her early days as a fashion designer and illustrator to her transition as a full-time sculptor in 2017. Witnessing the devastation while walking through the charred terrain deeply affected her. For the PolishAmerican artist, this destructive fire viscerally exposed nature’s vulnerability to the changing climate. “It was emotional to me because it felt so personal,” she recalls. “This is the city I live in.” Maszkiewicz has channeled this experience into her latest sculptures, in which she reflects on the sensitivity and balance of nature. Weaving together organic and man-made materials with metal wire, her mobiles are buoyant yet delicate, like saplings on pedestals or suspended in gossamer webs. In these works, the artist wants to imagine a harmonious dynamic with the environment. “I want to show the human and the natural working together,” she explains. Though beautiful, her work is far from purely bucolic. The Woolsey Fire is writ large in her mobile series of the same name, which contrasts polished wood veneers against burnt timber she collected in its aftermath. “I tried to capture that tragedy,” notes Maszkiewicz, who took care to preserve portions of charred bark, sanding other parts away. When configuring her mobiles’ designs, she takes cues from foraged natural objects, mimicking their shapes and motion. “I let them become what they want to become,” explains Maszkiewicz. “I abandon all the kinetic rules and just build from the bottom up.” In her latest mobile pendant series, she incorporated dried seeds and pods gathered around Los Angeles, morphing her wirework to suit each botanical type. Lacy wild cucumber pods “called for something more flowy and feminine,” she notes, while pieces featuring symmetrical pine cones felt right with wire forms that were “more geometric and organized.” Making art that explores the changing environment could easily dissolve into a sense of dread. But when her mobiles float in the air, the pieces feel like gestures of hope. The artist, for one, still has faith. “Because nature,” declares Maszkiewicz, “has such a wonderful way of coming back.”

Evoking Alexander Calder’s classic mobiles with an organic spin, artist Karolina Maszkiewicz (bottom) creates kinetic sculptures that combine foraged dried seeds, pods and more (below, right) with man-made elements and metal wire.

Set high above L.A.’s Sunset Boulevard, a formerly hard-edge home revels in a textile-rich makeover. W R I T T E N BY M A I L E P I N G E L P H O T O G R A P H Y BY R O G E R DAV I E S / O T T O

Interior Design: Suzanne Tucker, Tucker & Marks

O

n first glimpse, designer Suzanne Tucker gleaned exactly what her clients’ new Bel Air abode was missing: a glamour befitting the illustrious West Los Angeles neighborhood, once home to Zsa Zsa Gabor and Elizabeth Taylor. “It had a lot of hard surfaces and it just needed to feel more sumptuous, more seductive,” she says. “It needed some softness underfoot.” The home, designed by South African architecture firm SAOTA, is an ode to spectacular hilltop open-air living. It embodies a quintessential L.A. lifestyle that Bay Area-based Tucker appreciated and acknowledged, even while she set about transforming its voluminous interior spaces into more intimate settings. “Large volumes can be intimidating and people often assume that one room has to have just one sitting area, but that’s not the case,” the designer explains, adding that she drew on her early days working with legendary California designer Michael Taylor for the inspiration to “create spaces within spaces.” With the help of Westlake Village firm All Coast Construction, Tucker refinished floors and reconfigured ceilings with additional lighting to fit her new furniture plans. “We needed to create destinations within the large areas, defining each with furnishings and light,” she says. “It’s important to bring in tactile elements for a nicer human experience, but it’s also crucial to consider the intangibles—lighting, auditory elements, even fragrance—that make a space inviting.” To ensure that the new decor was a perfect fit, Tucker custom-designed most of the upholstered pieces throughout the house. “Rooms can be any color of the rainbow, but if you don’t get the scale and proportion right, it all goes off,” she warns. “You want a house to work for guests but also for two. Your home shouldn’t feel vacuous or leave you feeling lonely.” To that end, she divided the vast space of the main living room into two seating groups grounded by similar pale blue rugs. One arrangement is set deeper within the house and defined by large fishtail palm trees, Art Decostyle mirrors and paintings by Petra Cortright and Chris Trueman; the other, akin to the prow of a ship, opens to the pool terrace and the lawn

via retractable glass doors. Tucker also opted for snuggly chenille and textured bouclé fabrics as well as curving forms, like the round glass globes of the living room’s double chandeliers. “I didn’t want anything spiky or unfriendly,” she notes. “The strong geometric lines of the architecture benefited from the juxtaposition of softened curves.” In the dining room, a bleached-walnut oval table and plush chairs add to the sinuous feel. Because the screening room is mere steps away, Tucker kept its palette light, too, lining the walls with a subtle Suzani woven pattern. “It’s in keeping with the colors of the house, which are taken from the sky—daylight and clouds, sunrises and sunsets,” she says. “There’s nothing jarring here.” She did enrich the hues for the couple’s bedroom, though, bringing in blush pink tones. An antique Venetian-style mirror and a Roman marble bust of a goddess atop the credenza add an elegant note. “The challenge there, too, was to counter the hard surfaces—limestone floors and lots of glass—so we brought in a handtufted bamboo silk rug, bed linens with pearl gray embroidery and double layer curtains,” the designer explains. The sheers allow an ethereal light to filter in without obstructing the view and the heavier drapery brings a sense of warmth. Reflecting on this indoor-outdoor house, Tucker is quick to remind Angelenos of just how fortunate they are. “People here forget that the rest of the world isn’t like this. L.A. houses are so lucky to have these huge windows,” she says. The couple’s existing art collection, which crosses all genres, was a particular delight for the designer. “It brings so much character and personality to the house,” Tucker explains. She brought in even more art and objets to enhance the mix. Among them is a mounted ammonite, found on trip to England, as well as a sculptural fossil cluster. “They bring in a bit of ancient and crusty to balance all the sleek,” she says. But the designer is perhaps most fond of the Hung Liu painting in the entryway. “The front door is glass, so you see it immediately, with its wonderfully welcoming red color,” she enthuses. “It draws you into the home.” That allure is exactly what she had hoped to achieve. Gone is the chill of stone, steel and glass. “It’s a very romantic house now,” Tucker muses, “especially when its aglow at night.”

Ushering guests in with a strong dose of color, a bright mixed media artwork by Hung Liu adorns this Bel Air home’s airy foyer. Designer Suzanne Tucker paired rock crystal lamps by Craig Van Den Brulle with a console from Kneedler Fauchère, topped with a 1980s Murano glass mirror from Galerie Glustin in Paris. A ceiling light from De Sousa Hughes in San Francisco hangs over an antique carpet from Woven.

Opposite: “The wife has a penchant for antiquities,” says Tucker, noting the Roman marble bust of a goddess, circa 1st-2nd century A.D., set atop a wood credenza from Shears & Window. The latter is where she also spotted the bench, now upholstered with a Sloan Miyasato damask. The mirror is from John Nelson Antiques and the lamp is from L’ Antiquaire in Connecticut. Tucker paired Rogers & Goffigon sheers with drapery panels from Cowtan & Tout, adding a ceiling light from Liz O’Brien in New York City as a final touch.
