What Sustains Us

For this issue on The Power of Architecture, I’ve been reflecting on its purpose and meaning. Aside from shelter, security and function, architecture serves as a spatial arrangement that forges communities and speaks to the culture of a place. At best, the spaces that surround us enrich the quality of interactions we have within them. It’s the reason we feel peaceful while sitting by a poolside loggia or happiness when ascending a stairwell with a view of nature. Our homes, and the buildings we encounter in our daily lives, also reveal much about how we see ourselves. The potency of architecture lies in its ability to innovate through materiality and design, to push us to think diﬀerently about our environment, and, most importantly, to lift the human spirit.

Seoul-born gallerist Helen J Park brings a new cultural venue to Hollywood with a gallery focused on Asian and Asian-American artists. Designed by her husband, architect Kenneth Park, the industrial space (which counts Jeffrey Deitch and Regen Projects as neighbors) is going beyond traditional exhibition programming with tea tastings, bojagi (a type of traditional Korean wrapping cloth) workshops and cooking classes. Here, Park offers insight to her world. helenjgallery.com What’s on view? The new fiber works of Mimi Jung, a longtime L.A. artist who’s just moved to Montana, will be up through June. She has an extensive lineup of collectors—and a long wait-list for her work.

Why add cultural events to the mix? I wanted to invite people that wouldn’t normally come to galleries, either because they don’t know art or aren’t collectors. I imagined a space where anyone could freely and comfortably come in and enjoy a beautiful exhibition, whether they buy pieces or not. What upcoming artists should we have on our radar? There are so many, but I think these artists are important to watch: L.A. artist Hiejin Yoo, whose work is in high demand and who’s having a show at König Galerie in London this year; Kyungmi Shin, also an L.A. artist, recently had a solo exhibition with nearby gallery Various Small Fires; and Brooklynbased Minku Kim, who is on view at Berggruen in San Francisco and was my inaugural exhibition.

BEATRIX FARRAND: GARDEN ARTIST, LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT A new monograph marks the 150th birthday of the acclaimed Beatrix Farrand, a founding member of the American Society of Landscape Architects and major figure in her field throughout the early 20th century. Born to a prominent New York family, Farrand’s clientele included the Rockefellers, J.P. Morgan, Princeton, Yale and the White House—names that have overshadowed her extensive work in the Golden State. In 1927, Farrand’s husband was made the first director of The Huntington Library; the couple then moved to Pasadena, where she designed gardens for Occidental College, Caltech, private clients in Montecito and the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden—all of which feature in this beautifully illustrated tome. monacellipress.com

Landscape designer Adam Sirak has added a collection of cast-concrete and bronze indoor-outdoor planters to his eponymous firm’s offerings. Their restrained forms exude an ancient, artful feel reflecting the designer’s view that plants are living sculptures. The pieces, which are modular and can be stacked to create variations in height, are made-to-order, customizable in color and texture, and suited for both indoor and outdoor environments.

Celebrated international designer Ini Archibong divides his time between New York and Switzerland, but his formative years were spent here in Southern California. Born in Pasadena, he graduated from ArtCenter’s Environmental Design program in 2012. His new collection for Knoll, called Iquo, is an indoor-outdoor range of stackable café furniture. Iquo is Nigerian for “powerful voice” and honors his grandmother, mother and daughter, who share the name.

Fellow ArtCenter alums Glenn Lawson and Grant Fenning of Lawson-Fenning have debuted a line for CB2 comprised of seating, tables, case pieces, lighting, bedding and accessories. The designs take inspiration from California’s Arts and Crafts movement and midcentury tradition, while celebrating natural materials like travertine, cotton velvets and sustainably harvested woods, all in a palette inspired by aerial photography of the Golden State’s coast.

9720 WILSHIRE BOULEVARD Santa Monica-based architect David Montalba is restoring midcentury architect Edward Durell Stone’s landmark office building on Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. “Stone’s buildings have a stature about them that is both iconic and complex, and truly deserving of acclaim,” says Montalba, noting Rome’s Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana as Stone’s source of inspiration for the design. Working with Pasadena preservation firm Historic Resources Group and San Diego landscape firm OJB, Montalba will refresh the exterior plaza, lobbies and common areas, adding a lower-level indoor fountain illuminated by the plaza’s new sunken garden. “It’s nice to be able to honor the structures and architects that were an important part of the city’s history,” he adds. montalbaarchitects.com

It’s not often that a kid’s birthday party will change your life. But for Monica Olsen, who hosted her son’s fourth fête at Serenbe, a wellness community 32 miles from her then-home in Atlanta, it was a transformative experience. “We had a pony party at the gorgeous stables which were designed by architect Peter Block and it was this magical day,” she recalls. “We thought, ‘Maybe we should just stop at the real estate office while we’re here…’ They pointed out a house, we bought it and basically never left!”

Founded in 2005, Serenbe is tailormade to help residents live their best lives. It’s outfitted with a new 3,000-squarefoot spa, yoga studio, swim club, artist in residence program, lush hiking trails and many more wellness-geared elements that make it idyllic to say the least. ARCHITECT THOMAS KLIGERMAN REFLECTS ON THE ENDURING APPEAL OF AN INNATELY AMERICAN VERNACULAR. A S T O L D T O G R AC E B E U L E Y H U N T

When I close my eyes and imagine a house, I picture the sounds it makes: footsteps on the staircase, slamming screen doors, faint voices from downstairs while falling asleep. If someone asked me where I’d choose to live out my days, I’d say a Shingle style home because they reverberate like a drum. My connection to buildings has always been visceral. By the time I left for college, I had lived in 10 houses— saltboxes up and down Connecticut; apartments in New York, London and Paris; an adobe in New Mexico. My father’s work moved us often, but summers were always for sailing in Rhode Island, which is where my love for shingled homes cemented. Shingle style architecture emerged in Newport in 1876, combining the simple forms of early Colonial buildings with the quirks of Victorian Stick style. The 1880s were fascinating years—everything was brave and new. During this time, rooms grew from small, symmetrical boxes into episodic progressions with

abstract shapes and enormous doors that opened onto terraces. These homes weren’t trying to be Italianate villas or French chateaus. Here was an American style. I’m grouped with classical architects, but I’m a closet modernist who is always pushing to see how modern traditional homes can become—yet I never want to lose sight of what people love about them. Shingles are a medium that encourages daring design because they’re so lightweight. You can have soaring cantilevers and chimneys that look like great blades dropped from the heavens. With shingles, you can make a home look like the sail of a boat filled with air. Have you ever sat on the porch of a shingled house in the rain? There’s this wonderful, cozy scent from the cedar that brings comfort like a favorite sweater. That’s the thing; no matter who you are, whether you live in Santa Fe or Seal Harbor, the draw of home is strong for Americans. And Shingle style buildings don’t look like houses, they look—and feel—like homes.

As British retailer OKA expands its horizons stateside—it arrived in Dallas last November and will open in Westport, Connecticut, in September—a new collection with French designer Vincent Darré is next on the agenda. Darré, a former fashion heavyweight, captured the imagination of Sue Jones, Co-Founder and Creative Director of OKA, with his Cocteau-esque interiors. “Seeing Vincent’s work in the flesh excited me about the prospect of a collaboration,” recalls Jones after an early visit to Darré’s Paris atelier. “Everything he touches has a sense of drama to it.” For the duo’s tightly edited four-piece collection, Darré channeled OKA’s aristocratic-meets-bohemian style—a look that reminds him of photographer Cecil Beaton’s work—while also referencing the Neoclassical era and romantic 18th-century gardens. The result? Furnishings that work just as well in a group as they do individually. Included are a marble-topped console supported by ancient ruin-inspired legs, a column-like floor lamp (its spiral shade reminds Jones of a Philip Treacy hat), a black-and-white Grecian face vase and a mirror embellished with musical instruments and starfish. The playful collaboration allowed Jones and Darré to have a little fun while still championing true craftsmanship and creative ingenuity. oka.com

Lasting Lineage Sara Hayat Design

Design is in Sara Hayat’s DNA. Since the 1870s, her family’s company M. Hayat & Bros. has produced luxury furnishings for everyone from royal households to prominent clients, including John F. Kennedy and his famous White House rocker. So, it comes as no surprise that the need to be creative eventually struck. Setting aside a career in finance, Colorado-based Hayat set her sights on made-to-order furniture with a debut collection comprising coﬀee, writing and dining tables, chairs and sofas, and inventive modular seating. Each of the designer’s pieces, which have their genesis in detailed drawings, are handbuilt by her family’s longstanding artisans in Peshawar, Pakistan. While her materials lean traditional (mahogany, marble, cane, brass inlay, leather and velvet), her forms (geometric, floral, stacked and beveled) are anything but ordinary. Hayat studied joinery and detailing techniques by researching her

family’s archival catalogues in addition to referencing some of the world’s greats— Oscar Niemeyer and Pierre Paulin for further inspiration. She also became fascinated with contemporary automobile and fashion styles, making note of what she loved and which aesthetics she responded to emotionally. “Intentional design has the ability to uplift, and I want my furniture to do just that.” And her Tetris-inspired modular sofa provides a plum example. “People should be creative in how they use it,” Hayat explains, noting that the piece can morph from a sleek living room sofa into a fantastical object for play when deconstructed. “These pieces should dazzle, anchor us in the moment and remind us of what we can be.” As the newly minted furniture designer begins using her own pieces at home, she can’t help but reflect on what her parents instilled in her growing up. “My mother always believed that you should surround yourself with items that make you happy.” A legacy Hayat will surely continue to uphold. sara-hayat.com

Sometimes inspiration is right under one’s nose. Or in the case of Tony Niblock, co-founder of kitchen manufacturer Plain English, it was right over his Aga range, where an assortment of antique Delft tiles is proudly displayed. Niblock first started collecting the blueand-white squares after spotting them at a historic house in Yoxford, England, in the 1990s. Now, that passion has grown beyond adorning his own home and evolved into the company’s latest oﬀering, Delft by Plain English—a collection of handmade, hand-painted tiles inspired by his findings. “There’s a freshness about the color combination, isn’t there?” posits co-founder Katie Fontana. “And it’s so wonderful that there’s been a renewed interest and understanding around Delft tiles.” The tin-glazed earthenware tiles have been synonymous with the Netherlands since the 17th century when, impervious to heat or water, they became a functional— and charming—wall decoration for homes, public buildings and palaces across Europe. Plain English’s interpretation features figurative depictions of daily life, like children skipping, as well as fantastical scenes including a mermaid admiring her reflection—all in keeping with eclectic British style that is now back in vogue. “There is a naivete about them that people find appealing,” remarks Niblock. plainenglishdesign.co.uk

After 16 years, designer Dana Wolter knew it was time to upgrade her Birmingham, Alabama, kitchen. She soon whipped up a pretty, elegant and detail-filled scheme, but above all else, the space needed to stand the test of time. “I like to think of this room as timeless—a kitchen that will age well and get better the more you use it,” Wolter explains. To bring her well-aging vision to life, she opted for eternally exquisite materials like

Calacatta gold marble countertops and unlacquered brass fittings, all of which patina with use and become more beautiful. Wolter also gave careful consideration to several special details, including delicate fluted cabinetry, a hidden marble spice rack above the range and a functional trough sink carved directly into the island. As Wolter learned first-hand, renovating your own space certainly comes with its perks. The designer tweaked and customized every element to align with how she wanted the space to function. One especially lovely area came about from moving walls around: A graceful display niche that houses silver and crystal tableware frequently used for meals.

Here, delicate curved stone motifs on the shelves echo detailing on the center island to tie the areas together. In contrast to the light, airy kitchen, Wolter had a bit more fun in the pantry, where a moody palette and graphic marble slab surfaces add a touch of drama. “My intention with the pantry was to repeat some of the finishes and treatments in the kitchen, and to make the rooms flow,” the designer explains. “But at the same time, I wanted the pantry to be a little bolder.” Ample storage, refrigerator drawers, and a second dishwasher allow the space to function as a workhorse and keep messes out of sight. Here and throughout, the interior designer drew inspiration from Old Havana nightclubs and Hollywood’s Golden Age, employing patinaed architectural details like louvred doors, decorative paneling and reclaimed flooring to evoke a historical ethos. “This was one of my most fulfilling creative endeavors,” shares Kaywell of the project. “It’s a really neat blend of office, country club and hip bar. Interior designer Margaret Kaywell’s client sought an office space of a different color. Namely, one that would inspire future ventures, and host friends and associates for work and play alike. He found his answer in a run-down bungalow in West Palm Beach, which Kaywell—in collaboration with MP Design & Architecture and Tim Givens Building & Remodeling—imagined as a sumptuous private clubhouse. Reworking the layout from the studs, Kaywell conceived a gracious foyer with velvet banquettes flanked by a conference-meets-dining room on one side, and a billiards room on the other. The floor plan also includes a private office, powder

Designer Nina Magon faced a unique brief when it came to the media room of a young Houston-based family. “The husband is a serious cards player and wanted a designated place to call his poker room. His wife said, ‘Okay fine, but you need to share it with me and your child!’” So spurred plans for a space that bridges the divide between moody man cave, elegant lounge and kid-friendly play space. “It’s a universally fun room; it works for everything,” notes Magon, pointing to the custom six seat table (the exact headcount for poker night) and adjacent TV area with its wipeable ottoman that rolls away to accommodate a playmat. A family’s early 1800s farmhouse in Litchfield, Connecticut, was a ground-up project—of sorts. Over the course of six years, and led by designer Susan Bednar Long, renovations were tackled phase-by-phase. By the time they set their sights on the unfinished attic, both designer and client had developed a keen sense of what was still missing—a workhorse. On the wish list: A well-appointed office, a gentleman’s lounge for cigar smoking and game nights, a sleep loft for family visits and a bevy of storage. While embracing the original beams and warm wood floors, Long set about modernizing the space with a cozy, masculine mood. Notably, in building out the crooked chimney, she created a stylish built-in

bar-meets-shelving unit wrapped in metallic Hermès wallpaper, which ingeniously serves as a partition between the lounge and office areas. Utilizing every solitary inch (while preserving an airy feel thanks to precisely scaled furnishings), the designer squeezed in a comfy window banquette, an 11-foot-long desk, a flatscreen TV and a sectional. Storage space abounds as well, including the antique home’s original, rehabilitated cubbies that now enclose back-of-house office supplies, camping gear and seasonal storage. “Only the pretty stuff is on view,” notes Long, adding, in the ultimate stamp of approval, “This was never an essential space, but it has become just that.” sblonginteriors.com

“Due to the supply chain impact on our market, we encourage our clients to choose the most affected components up front,” Hanley shares. “We help them select long-lead materials, such as windows, lighting, plumbing fixtures and appliances, long before renovations begin. We would much rather order these materials and hold them in our warehouse than have the project delayed.”

INNOVATE WITH TRADITION Taconic Builders can incorporate ancient building techniques like Shou Sugi Ban and Tadelakt into their projects. “Shou Sugi Ban is the ancient Japanese method of weatherproofing wood by charring it, which preserves the wood without the need for paint, stains or polyurethane,” Hanley explains. “And Tadelakt is a traditional Moroccan wall surfacing made from lime plaster and olive-based soap. The resulting material is a natural, waterproof plaster that can be used in bathrooms in lieu of tile or marble.”

On one end of this century-old Hancock Park home’s living room, an antique dog print given to one of the homeowners by his mother looks over a bar area. Designer Melissa Warner Rothblum found the striking banana bark buffet at Made Goods, placing it atop a Stark area rug.

ou have to be brave and make your house you,” declares Melissa Warner Rothblum, the Los Angeles-based half of Massucco Warner, the design firm she cofounded with Julie Massucco Kleiner. So when a couple of avid travelers asked her to transform their Hancock Park-area residence, this maxim led her to set an intrepid course: turning her clients’ abode into a series of bold destinations. With Warner Rothblum in the cockpit, they embarked on a top-to-bottom redesign inspired by their favorite getaways from the four corners of the world. “This whole project felt like an adventure,” she recalls. “A great design adventure.” “My clients wanted their home to be a reflection of themselves, so we talked a lot about what they love,” Warner Rothblum explains. Embracing everything from London hotels and fine suit jackets to golden retrievers and their cookbook collection, her conversations with the pair became the inspiration for highly personalized design moments. And because the house, which celebrates its centennial this year, had been lovingly restored by the previous owner, it was a relatively uncomplicated effort. “No walls were moved—this was a really good ‘before,’ ” says the designer. To elevate each room, she relied on an array of patterns: Fabrics inspired by menswear and what she calls “dressmaker details” (think nailhead trim on upholstered pieces and hem tape on curtains) were added to the mix for a refined, polished look. “Melissa took our love of haberdashery and combined texture and palettes with distinctive choices,” explains one of the homeowners, an executive in the entertainment industry. “She brought such boldness to the project,” adds his husband, a digital producer. The entryway’s eye-catching wallpaper sets the tone, with a striking scene of gilded tigers romping amid birds and leafy branches. “The tigers are a protective symbol. You feel enveloped in that space,” Warner Rothblum observes. The print is also a playful nod to the couple’s dogs, who love to frolic around the home. “They wrestle on the carpet and shed everywhere, so we needed practical pieces like the foyer’s outdoor rug—it’s beautiful but you can hose it,” says the husband.

Adjoining the entry is the equally alluring dining room, clad in a cloud pattern wallpaper and paneling painted a deep red. “They wanted a welcoming dining room. With the plaid rug and head chairs, it feels a little British, too,” adds Warner Rothblum, noting that the homeowners are fans of English designer Kit Kemp’s bold but classical interiors. Adding an element of surprise over the sideboard is a portrait of a young woman that the couple found in Vietnam. “It’s always been a centerpiece in our homes, but Melissa reinterpreted it with a simpler frame,” the husband continues. “And when she suggested painting the woodwork red, we just said yes.” To add softness to these dramatic interiors, Warner Rothblum turned to mellow hues for the living room. “In houses with a lot of color, the eye needs a place to rest,” she says of her decision to paint the walls a warm taupe and balance brighter touches with camel and navy hues, shades that “makes green accents stand out.” The room is lengthy, so she established three defined areas: Sofas arranged near a central fireplace, a bar at one end and a pair of lounge chairs at the other. Rounding out the redesign is the kitchen, which is largely what sold the couple on the abode. “It had a Diane Keaton-Hamptons-Something’s Gotta Give feel,” one of the homeowners recalls. To accommodate the pair’s treasured cookbooks, the designer converted several cupboards into shelves. And adding another stop to the home’s travel chart, she created a breakfast nook evocative of a Parisian bistro. Now, should the owners long for the feel of Southern Europe, the front courtyard is inspired by Italy, with Moorish accents. Should the English countryside beckon, the back garden is an homage to the Cotswolds—albeit with a drought-tolerant interpretation by landscape designer Nick Dean. Those outdoor spaces also lead to another “sunny and sweet” surprise, as Warner Rothblum describes it: a charming guest house that nods to Singaporean Colonial aesthetics with dark wood furnishings playing off cream-colored walls and fabrics. “This home doesn’t fit into a one-word style, it just feels very collected,” she reflects. Or, as her clients put it, “We can now go everywhere without leaving. Every great place we could think of came together in our house.”

Landscape architect Kate Guerra-Hershey trimmed this Monarch Bay property’s existing Japanese black pine to create a striking focal point in the front yard. The overall effect, she says, is of a “Santa Barbara-style or informal Mediterranean-inspired garden with an infusion of exotic succulents and flowering perennials.” The house is positioned deep in the lot, she notes, “which gives it a great sense of privacy.”

hildren invariably prompt life changes—even after they’ve left the nest. For one Midwestern couple, their kids’ relocation to the Golden State led them to investigate West Coast houses themselves. “Our son and daughter live in Southern California, and we just fell in love with the energy there,” the wife shares. When they scooped up a second home in Monarch Bay, its contemporary ranch style exuded a compelling, welcoming warmth. But it was the views of the Pacific that really sealed the deal. From the start, she says, “it made us feel like we were on top of the world.” In the original layout, though, only a small family room enjoyed the scenery. The main living areas instead revolved around an open-air sunken courtyard walled off from the oceanic panorama—a design decision that puzzled the couple. “We kept thinking, ‘Why would you close up so much of the house from that view?’ ” remembers the wife. But they decided to wait about a year and a half before committing to a renovation. “We didn’t want to make assumptions about how a California home should be lived in based on our experience in Chicago,” she adds. And time confirmed their instincts. “We would never sit there,” the wife says of the courtyard. “It was hot during the day and, at night, it was just an outdoor area without anything to see.” The courtyard became pivotal to the renovation, for which the couple called in the design team that had transformed their Illinois home: Interior designer Andrea Burridge and architects Ken Pursley and Mark Kline. The entire team agreed with the clients’ assessment about their home. “The spaces were chopped up and didn’t take full advantage of the house’s opportunities,” recalls Pursley. To wit, several interior walls came down to create an expansive great room, and the courtyard was glassed in and topped by a skylight-studded roof. “A major decision was to add a back wall of sliding glass so our clients could enjoy indooroutdoor living, which is one of the best things

about California,” notes Burridge. Adds general contractor Michael Palmer, “We did an extensive amount of work, but opening it all up changed everything. It made this project what it is.” In contrast to the couple’s more traditional Chicago home, Burridge took a laid-back approach to the interiors, pouring over West Coast design books like Nina Freudenberger’s Surf Shack for inspiration. Throughout, a mostly neutral palette keeps all eyes focused on the water, with a few ocean-inspired exceptions like the deep navy of the kitchen’s freestanding wall or the washed Aegean blue of the dining room’s grass-cloth wallcovering. The beach chic-style bedrooms were inspired by the couple’s many trips to St. Barts. “Design on this island has a beautiful aesthetic to it; these clean-lined interiors feel sophisticated yet casual in a similar way,” notes Burridge, a frequent visitor to the Caribbean getaway herself. The great room’s kitchen houses one of the home’s more unusual features. There, a prep area is hidden in plain sight behind freestanding white oak cabinets, which are encased in a beveled wood frame painted marine blue. Skirting the ceiling by a few feet, this line of cabinetry tricks the eye by acting as a divider or “screen” delineating the prep area, explains Pursley. “A lot of our kitchens have a front and a backstage,” he says. “You get an open plan, but you’ve hidden the oven and storage.” The room’s other secret, dreamed up by Burridge, is its breakfast bar: A heavy wood piece cleverly glides out of the island, transforming into a table that can welcome up to 20 guests. As for the initially puzzling, closed-off courtyard, it’s now level with the rest of the home. Recast as the formal dining room, it enjoys the same views as the great room through insulated glass which both muffles the clamor of dinner parties and allows for the space to serve as a private office for the husband. “That glass was an afterthought, but it became one of the best decisions we’ve made,” the wife comments. Close to their children and face-to-face with the Pacific, the whole abode fills its owners with the same serene satisfaction.

Thanks to an extensive renovation plan, the great room now enjoys Pacific views enhanced by retractable glass doors. “They let in the ocean breeze for a more immersive experience,” says architect Ken Pursley. By the fireplace, interior designer Andrea Burridge complemented Palecek’s rattan and abaca rope Strings Attached lounge chairs with a track arm sofa and reclaimed hardwood coffee table, both from RH.

The central sunken courtyard became a formal dining room level with the rest of the home. Blue grass cloth from Thibaut lines the walls, highlighting a print by artist Laurie Simmons. winging in a flurry of color, piñatas are emblematic of unadulterated, carefree pleasures. More than simple decorated containers, they’re also vessels of traditions that cross borders and centuries. And for Los Angeles artist Roberto Benavidez, who finds inspiration in their layers of history and meaning, they’re the starting point to create imaginative, flamboyant sculpture collections. Growing up half-Mexican, half-AngloAmerican in Texas, Benavidez fondly remembers the cheerful piñatas of his childhood. As an adult, he returned to these forms when developing his art practice, gravitating toward their cultural significance. Originating from Asia to Europe, where they were integrated into Lenten celebrations, Spanish Catholic missionaries brought piñatas to Mexico, incorporating Aztec traditions to encourage conversion. Thus emerged classic designs like the seven-pointed star, a symbol for the Deadly Sins, filled with concealed treasures representing heaven’s salvation. “The modernday piñata is a mix between the Western world and the Americas,” Benavidez explains. “Acknowledging this history became a way to represent myself as a mixed-race individual.” The paper sculptor playfully upends the piñata’s origins in several series inspired by surreal medieval creatures and Hieronymus Bosch’s famed painting The Garden of Earthly Delights. And, featuring more realistic animals, his “Birdr” series depicts gay bird couples, inverting the narrative of Adam and Eve. “It’s a way for me to subtly play with my sexuality,” notes Benavidez of his paper paradise. “I’m the ‘Creator,’ so everything I make is gay.” Sans divine intervention, his creations come to life through an industrious process. Using balloons to form the basic shapes, he builds their bodies with Bristol board bones and papiermâché flesh. He then layers delicate rows of matte and metallic Italian crepe, hand-cut with serrated edges to give them texture and the appearance of movement. Combining colors “is where the magic happens,” says the artist. “It’s like I’m painting with the paper, layering colors to create vibrancy or change hues.” And yes, his sculptures may contain treasures—though Benavidez will never reveal exactly what kind. “There’s no other art form where you immediately wonder, ‘What’s inside?’ ” he reflects. “And there’s something magical about that.”

iving out your days on a tropical island is the stuff of fantasies, but one couple made this dream a reality—without even leaving California. Their new house in Corona del Mar hints at isle-style right from its entry, which features an overhang of woven twigs inspired by Balinese shade canopies. And then there’s the walkway, extending over an enclosed lower-level courtyard and accented by a peaceful water feature, plus the mix of natural woods and earthen touches throughout—all choices inspired by lush islands like Bali and Hawaii. The overall aesthetic is a dramatic departure from their former white coastal farmhouse in a nearby neighborhood, notes designer Erin Flinn. “They’ve traveled a lot,” she explains, “and the style of this house is in harmony with their journeys.” Yet there is a through line between the clients’ abodes, both designed by Flinn, and it’s her emphasis on each residence’s views. As the wife says of their current house, which faces the Pacific and enjoys glorious sunsets, “We’ve been going to the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on the Big Island for 20 years. When you step inside, the ocean view takes your breath away—it hits you, like, ‘I’m in Hawaii.’ I wanted people to feel that way when they walk into our home.” The owners, a couple blessed with 16 grandchildren, also loved the idea of what Flinn dubbed a “bohemian Balinese-style” house that could host large family gatherings. Architect Mark Teale devised a plan he dubbed “Bali modern,” built in turn by general contractor Scott Cross. Ocean-facing covered patios extend via pocket doors from the great room overlooking the pool, which was a high-priority item on the homeowners’ wish list. Four bedrooms span the top floor, including two guest rooms and a bunk room that sleeps plenty of grandkids, while a home gym and a dedicated art room for the little ones open to a lower-level courtyard. The kitchen, tricked out with a customized Galley Workstation on the island, is adjacent to a butler’s pantry—and it recently made hosting a crowd of more than 30 a breeze. Seating for guests also easily spills into a covered outdoor dining area. “With the sliding doors open, it adds nearly half a room,” the wife enthuses. “And we have heaters in the patio ceiling, which is brilliant.”

A selection of natural woods contributes to the residence’s casual island vibe. Beneath a white oak ceiling, the kitchen cabinetry is walnut, while the great room features fluted oak cabinetry, and mahogany accents continue the theme on the exterior. “We weren’t trying to do a ‘matchymatchy’ kind of architecture,” says Teale. “We wanted it to be a little more rough-hewn, not like it all came out of the same machine.” Adds Cross of the indoor and outdoor assortment of woods, “You don’t usually see them mixed like this—here we were able to join completely different styles of wood and finishes, which is very unique and uncommon. It’s a bit like saying, ‘I want purple, red and green carpet in my house, and I want it to all look good.’ ” Flinn and Teale were strong collaborators from the project’s start, creating a sense of cohesiveness that continued through the final touches. Honed travertine floors from Seville, Venetian plaster walls and a glazed ceramic tile for the kitchen backsplash further the home’s natural, tactile sensibilities. When it came to the furnishings, Flinn deferred to the draw of the ocean. “We oriented the majority of the furniture out towards the view,” she explains. “We emphasized textures, not so much colors.” The great room’s generous and cozy off-white sofas, accented with wood bases, anchor the main area. They also provide enough heft to balance the brushed-steel fireplace, a material that repeats across the space on the kitchen’s range hood and references the industrial metals of contemporary Balinese architecture. The designer’s selection of detailed accessories— like the vintage Indonesian planters that flank the front door or the imported carved-limestone pot converted into a fire pit in the courtyard—layer in references to history and travels. In the primary bedroom, tall mirrors above the nightstands are overlaid with patterns of carved wood and give off a distinctly Southeast Asian feel. The entire design team cites their lockstep partnership as a major factor to achieving their goals. “I see interior design and architecture as going hand in glove, like the melody and rhythm of music,” Teale reflects. “Both Erin and I had fairly contemporary ideas, and together we managed to get them executed.” And the homeowners couldn’t be happier with their unfussy, island-inspired abode. “Shortly after we moved in, a guest came into our house, went straight for the view and got tears in his eyes,” says the wife. “I thought, ‘Bingo! We did it.’ ”

In the great room, a mix of soft wood tones and weathered stone materials exudes a relaxed, natural atmosphere. Details such as the wood base on custom sofas by Laurie Flot weave in the home’s tropical theme. Flinn sourced the vintage rug from Rug Resources to enhance the room’s casual feel. The brushed-steel fireplace is by CMT Sheet Metal and the square oak coffee table is the homeowners’ own.

The dining table is composed of a mosaic top with an iron base from Berbere Imports and ringed with woven rattan chairs from Made Goods.
