Color Meets COLLABORATION

THE POWER OF PAINT IS UNIVERS ALLY ACKNOWLEDGED BY EXPERTS AS THE FINAL FINISH. IT POSSESSES THE ABILITY TO DEFINE STYLE, CREATE AMBIENCE AND ENHANCE ANY ENVIRONMENT BOTH AESTHETICALLY AND ARCHITECTURALLY. PAINT’S TRANSFORMATIVE QUALITY IS THAT IT BRINGS A ROOM TO LIFE.

Before paint can have this impact, though, it must be carefully selected and applied. To many, this is a true art form and, to some, a daunting task. Enter, 21 interior designers and painters who have mastered finding the perfect hue and showcasing exquisite craftsmanship while embracing the power of teamwork. After all, the relationship between an interior designer and a painter holds a special significance in the world of design.

The designer’s chosen colors, textures and finishes are implemented by the skilled hands of their painter. Combined, these talents for telling the story of a space through paint beget beautiful projects. In partnership with Benjamin Moore, meet these Faces of Design— Class of 2023—as they showcase the perspectives and qualities that have shaped their trailblazing careers, one brushstroke at a time.

MARIE CLOUD + JOHN PARKER

Every professional in the design field possesses a guiding philosophy or two. In the case of designer Marie Cloud and paint contractor John Parker, one such overarching ethos serves as bonding glue: client is king. “All of my homes are unique,” Marie shares. “I’ll never repeat myself, because each space is true to the homeowner’s heart, soul and personal story.” Likewise, John chimes in, “We are committed to transforming living environments to reflect the homeowner’s unique personality.” Paint, of course, is central to their methods in doing so. Marie enthuses on its role in design: “Paint is like language. It can transform interior and exterior environments, changing the overall ambience and mood. Lighter shades, such as beige and cream, create an airy, open feel, while darker shades, like navy blue or emerald green, lend a cozy and intimate atmosphere. It can also help to disguise imperfections and enhance architectural features, such as crown molding and baseboards. Paint is like magic.” Especially when it is applied with skill. As John puts it, “Top-notch workmanship ensures a beautiful result.”

MICHELE PLACHTER + JAMES CERVONE

Describe the impact paint has on your projects. Michele: Color is the cornerstone of all great design, whether we’re using it to bring the outdoors inside, to create a cozy man cave with dark and moody tones or to add a soft touch to a bedroom with a gentle palette. We love to play with unexpected color and finish choices as well. When we have clients who are open to it, we get experimental!

How did you come to work together? Michele: James and I were introduced by our mutual contractor. The painter I used for 20 years had retired, so I was looking for another talented painter. Mission accomplished!

What are some of your go-to paint products?

James: For walls, I would say the Aura Matte is above all other products I’ve used, and for trim, the Advance Satin product is definitely our favorite!

MATT DONAHOE + ERWIN HERCEG

For many trade partners, the working relationship begins with a personal passion project. This was the case for Matt Donahoe and Erwin Herceg. About 12 years ago, Matt and his husband hired Erwin to assist with a renovation in their own home. The scope was daunting, but Erwin’s work was masterfully executed. “We have collaborated together ever since,” Matt says. “When we show up on a jobsite together, the contractors sweat.” Why? Because the duo has a fervor for outstanding quality. The results usually feature Benjamin Moore product. “I like Scuff-X for high-traffic areas and Aura Bath & Spa when moisture is a factor,” Erwin shares.

“Also, I always use Benjamin Moore ceiling paint.” bureauinteriordesign.com, @erwinherceg

KATI CURTIS + JOSE OCEGUERA

Often, the reason two colleagues become long-term partners comes down to one simple factor: they just “get” each other. Take it from designer Kati Curtis, who has been working with painting contractor Jose Oceguera for years. “Jose has an intuitive understanding of my design preferences and requirements, which means I don’t need to provide excessive direction,” she says. Together, they thrive on great feats of design and execution, including one project where color changes were desired at the last minute. “Within a week, we transformed the home and the furnishings were protected throughout,” Jose shares. “We take pride in our work and strive for excellence, ensuring that everything is done right the first time.” As for the paint-related advice they share with homeowners, Kati points to the challenge of selection. “I strongly caution against relying on paint chips alone, because even larger squares can be misleading—the eye tends to perceive colors as darker against a white background. We love Benjamin Moore’s online tool, where you can upload a photo of the room and see any color applied to it.” katicurtisdesign.com, Jose Oceguera: 914-760-4435

JAN SHOWERS + LOUIS GLORIA

How did you come to work together? Jan: I saw the quality of craftsmanship Louis possessed and was so impressed. The work he did on our room at the first Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas was masterful, and we received more comments about it than anything else. We have been collaborating for the five years since!

Why is the connection between designer and painting contractor key to a project’s success? Louis: When these two parties communicate well and have a “feel” for each other’s skills and talents, the result will fit the homeowner’s desires, personality and character like a glove. Also, being able to troubleshoot through the confusion of any unexpected issue is something that is strengthened with years of experience working together.

Share a pro tip for choosing the right paint color. Jan: In rooms with low ceilings, I like to paint the ceilings, moldings and walls all the same color. It causes the room to look larger and taller.

O. STEPHANIE BEVERLY + JESSICA GALLOWAY

Why is the connection between designer and painting contractor key to a project’s success? Stephanie: I think of the designer-painter relationship much like a musician and the conductor. Both are essential to a beautiful and cohesive sound—and space, in the context of design.

What are some of your go-to paint products?

Jessica: Benjamin Moore’s Scuff-X is the bee’s knees! The leveling capability of this product is superb. The satin finish is true satin and doesn’t lose sheen with spray application. Newer to my toolbox is Command. We refinish staircases often, and for stair treads, I stand by this product.

Which colors inspire you the most? Stephanie: Hands down, the most inspirational colors are deep, moody ones that evoke a feeling like a loving embrace or a nod to creativity: blacks, deep blues, purples, deep oranges and deep, golden yellows.

PETI LAU + JOHN FASANO

The order of the day may be paint, but Peti Lau and John Fasano first met due to the installation of wallpaper. After collaborating to install it for a Housing Works Design on a Dime charity event in 2016, the duo began a partnership that would culminate in countless perfected paint jobs. As Peti says, “It takes two to tango!” Asked to share their old-faithful approaches to the process, one talks color and the other formula. “I tend to go with saturated hues of blues, dark greens, teals and wine colors when I want drama,” Peti says. “When neutrals are the call, I like warm tones like taupes, greiges and sage colors.” John chimes in, “The specific features of Aura give the premium application we’re seeking, but my favorite combo is White Dove OC-17 in Advance Satin. It holds color and gives a durable, high-end finish.” With Peti’s design eye and John’s technical expertise and unparalleled prep work, they make an ideal team for each perceptive client. “I love that I get to help transform lives by giving my clients the ability to create their unique home,” Peti says. “That begins, of course, with paint.” petilau.com, @jsnpainting

SARAH VAILE + JIM BERARDI AND MIKE FOLEY

When a designer has a reputation for color, it’s a safe bet they’ll have a close relationship with a painting pro. Case in point: Sarah Vaile, Jim Berardi and Mike Foley (center). She’s known for her use of bold hues, and they are the application pros who make it happen. “Paint is the most underestimated challenge of interior design,” Sarah shares. “It is the canvas.” Jim and Mike play to its importance, with a knack for selecting the ideal formula and sheen, and then executing it to perfection—and to the client’s delight. “We collectively seek discerning clients who can appreciate the impact of fine prep and nice brushwork,” Mike says. “There are many factors we consider along the way, from a family’s lifestyle to window exposure and beyond.” sarahvaile.com, divincipainters.com

JAMIE DECK + FERENCE SCHOLD

When one holds to the “less is more” philosophy, there is a certain demand on the foundation of a space: there must be incomparable quality. As a designer known for her minimalist, Japanese and Nordic-inspired spaces, Jamie Deck would know. For her, the clean slate of simplicity begins with paint— and expert Ference Schold. “In this artistic collaboration, both the interior designer and the painting contractor play integral roles, each contributing their unique skills and expertise to the vision,” Jamie says. “Ference meticulously prepares surfaces, addressing imperfections.” Being that Jamie and her clients gravitate toward crisp, tranquil whites and creams, a smooth application is a necessity. The secret, Ference emphasizes, lies in formulation. “Paint products that offer ease of application without splattering or sagging are imperative to that flawless finish,” he says. “I prioritize those that have good viscosity control, reducing the likelihood of drips or visible brush and roller marks. This also enhances the efficiency of my process, because it eliminates the need for excessive touch-ups and corrections along the way.” shift-interiors.com, fandmscholdpainting.com

WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA

KRISTINE PAIGE + KARLO ARELLANO

It establishes the desired mood, creates an emotional background for furnishings and art, integrates the interiors with the surrounding landscape, highlights the details of woodwork—paint, as Kristine Paige tells it, plays a critical role in any design she creates. Perhaps it is little wonder that she and accomplished paint pro Karlo Arellano have formed a lasting partnership. “Kristine is the orchestrator using her skill set to wave progress along,” Karlo says. “But we know that a paint job can make or break that project, so we live by the phrase, ‘It’s not how you start, but how you finish,’ and bring the best product and application technique for each client.”

Advice FROM THE Experts

“I always use Benjamin Moore Waterborne ceiling paint. It’s so flat that any light in the room makes the ceiling glow. For potential imperfections, it is the best high-tide secret weapon you can find.”

“ When I present a blind test set of samples for clients, 90 percent of the time Aura is chosen. It offers a rich vibrancy that is second to none.”

“Advance

“Scuff-X is a first-of-its-kind commercial product with superior scuff-resistance. It’s amazing for high-traffic areas, water-born and low-VOC— uncommon for high-performance paint.”
-MIKE FOLEY
“I love Benjamin Moore’s Advance Satin. I think it’s the best paint on the market.”
-JOHN FASANO
“I love Classic Burgundy HC-182 for its luxurious and indulgent essence. It is the velvet of colors; I can feel it.”
-MARIE CLOUD
“No accent walls, please! Going tonal on ceilings i s fine and good, but avoid the accent walls of yesteryear!”
-MICHELE PLACHTER
Satin gives you the feel of a classic, timeless oil finish without the disadvantage of rapid yellowing.”
-LOUIS GLORIA

DESIGN STORIES

… with House of Rohl

THREE DESIGNERS | ONE PORTFOLIO | ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES

HOUSEOFROHL.COM

houseofrohl

House of Rohl® is a portfolio of luxury decorative plumbing brands curated from around the world, allowing you to tell your own story of a life well crafted: Riobel®, Perrin & Rowe®, Shaws®, ROHL® and Victoria + Albert®. Each brand has a unique story that connects craft, place of origin and specialized techniques that deliver timeless design. Together they bring a richness of heritage, innovation and endless design opportunities to your kitchen and bath.

For inspiration, House of Rohl partnered with three nationally-recognized designers, each curating their own vision of whole-home design using their favorite brands from its portfolio. On the following pages, their modern, traditional and transitional interpretations come to life, capturing the richness of heritage, craftsmanship and timelessness that is House of Rohl.

ALL THINGS MODERN

In a world filled with digital noise, designer Amhad Freeman, of Amhad Freeman Interiors, creates serene sanctuaries of calm, clean-lined design that soothe and inspire the senses. Freeman’s compelling spaces elevate every design story with the use of natural materials, pared-back details and quiet color palettes. It’s no surprise that the award-winning designer was drawn to House of Rohl early on, taken with its level of craftsmanship and detail. Since then, its portfolio of brands has become a mainstay in the Black-led firm’s projects, bringing an elegant, stylistic

blend to every design. Dreamy minimalism defines Freeman’s approach, captured here in the modern version of his vision board. Looking to create an environment outfitted for urban living, Freeman went to work mixing materials and similar shapes throughout. “My goal was to find plumbing that was modern, simple and cohesive,” he says. Riobel’s Bistro Kitchen Faucet launched his scheme, which includes a painted Victoria + Albert tub in Signal Black Matte, ROHL’s Eclissi Faucet and Perrin & Rowe sinks for their craftsmanship.

• Three words that best describe the look you were going for: Modern. Versatile. Elegant.

• Five words that define House of Rohl: Beautiful. Smart. Current. Functional. Significant.

• K+B design musts: Stylish and functional plumbing. Without those elements, you just have a boring experience.

• Recent trends impacting K+B design: To be honest, there are no trends for my designs. I allow each space to speak to me and that dictates the design.

KEEPING WITH TRADITION

Named one of the “Top 100 Interior Designers in the World” with 13 ASID Design Excellence Awards, interior and product designer Donna Mondi, of Donna Mondi Interior Design, has seen and done. Introduced to House of Rohl early on, Mondi was tasked with selecting plumbing for a custom home builder she worked with in an affluent Chicago suburb. “House of Rohl always had a great selection and beautiful finishes, and their faucets felt so good,” Mondi says. “I am big on how elements feel on a daily basis.” Here, Mondi took a traditional approach

to her whole-home concept, envisioning spaces with classical elements, but with a twist. Starting in the kitchen, she chose Perrin & Rowe’s Bridge Faucet and a chef’s sink with all the bells and whistles, then moved to the primary bathroom, where a Victoria + Albert Freestanding Bathtub in Signal Black Matte creates drama. “Powder rooms might be my favorite spaces to design, so I couldn’t pass that up, and a sexy bar lounge resonates with my firm’s provocative style,” she adds. “And I rounded it out with a chic and highly-functional laundry room.”

• What provided the jumpingoff point for your design? The Holborn from Perrin & Rowe and Graceline from ROHL are my favorites! Traditional, but with modern simplicity.

• Three words that best describe the look you were going for: Classic. Timeless. Luxurious.

• Favorite House of Rohl products: I’m a sucker for the Perrin & Rowe Holborn and Armstrong versions of the Bridge Faucet for the kitchen, and Victoria + Albert’s Amiata Tub with ROHL’s Graceline Tub Filler in the bathroom.

• K+B design musts: Function first! Every kitchen should have a beautiful faucet with a side sprayer and air switch. I love a large, generous sink and pot fillers too.

TIME FOR TRANSITIONAL

Interior, furniture and soon-to-be textile designer Joy Williams, of Joyful Designs Studio, is always intentional with her approach, seeking to enhance clients’ homes and lives with her stylish, textured and visuallyimpactful spaces. The design influencer and expert discovered House of Rohl at Chicago’s The Mart years back and, in her words, “completely fell in love with the beauty and craftsmanship of the brands under its house of design.” For her transitional take on this design, Williams brought to mind spaces she would design for her own family; how she would want

her kitchen and baths to function and look aesthetically. “I considered the type of craftsmanship that draws me in from materiality to finishes, she says. “The goal was to achieve a level of artful joy.” For the bathrooms, she pulled from Shaws, Victoria + Albert, Riobel and Perrin & Rowe, which provided a complementary mix, and for the kitchen, she went all in on ROHL. “I love the look of chrome and mixing metals,” she says. Williams continued the chrome theme in the bath, punctuating the look with a deep, soulful violet-purple, freestanding soaking tub.

MORE WITH JOY

INSPIRING MIND

While some of our forms are pared down, our glasswork is notoriously challenging and time-consuming. In my collaboration with Art + Loom, I wanted to express the luminosity and intricate details that are possible with hand-blown glass in a twodimensional medium.

OPEN HOUSE

SAMUEL & SONS

Samuel & Sons, the industry’s go-to source for trimmings, has called on celebrated designer Timothy Corrigan—a passementerie expert in his own right—to renovate its New York flagship. Revamped for the first time since its 1998 opening, the brand’s D&D Building-adjacent brownstone space will better accommodate customers browsing its more than 10,000 tassels, borders, braids and fringes. “Our New York town house holds special meaning,” brand president Michael Cohen says. “We strived to maintain the heritage of the original showroom.” Shoppers will recognize the existing wood cabinetry and Crema Marfil marble floors, surrounded by cleaner lines, improved lighting and additional seating and displays for an even more luxe visit. A perfect project for Corrigan, who, in his own words, is “continually inspired by Samuel & Sons’ ability to innovate and provide the ultimate showroom experience for their customers.” samuelandsons.com

Brooklyn-based architect, designer and artist Andreea Avram Rusu develops everything from visually striking blown-glass luminaires to a recent rug collaboration with Art + Loom. Luxe tapped Avram Rusu to learn more about her craft and inspiration. avramrusu.com

Tell us about how you create new designs. Bold expression combined with exemplary technique is the cornerstone of everything we make.

How do materials impact your process? I love experimenting with glass; it’s full of surprises. By letting it guide the process, I can transcend the boundaries of design. Sometimes colors chemically react and create something entirely new. Other times, we start with one form and end up someplace entirely different.

What other media are you exploring? For the rug collection, I reinterpreted subtle glass details in textile forms. Recently, I have also been revisiting slip-cast porcelain and thinking about incorporating woven-leather details in future lighting collections.

SHELF LIFE

Country Life: Homes of the Catskill Mountains and Hudson Valley

Photographer William Abranowicz has spent years capturing the country homes of city dwellers in search of tranquility in the Hudson Valley.

Published by Vendome Press, a new monograph surveys the vast array of dwellings

Abranowicz has immortalized throughout his career. The featured projects include everything from the historic homes of Hudson River School painters Thomas Cole and Frederic Edwin Church to the dwellings of vintage furniture dealers championing eclecticism above all else. Varying in style and age, these abodes are all united by the way they connect to their verdant setting. Authored by Zander Abranowicz, the tome is a celebration of the different sensibilities that make up the landscape of Catskills homes as much as it is a reflection of the personal tastes of the region’s most designforward habitants. williamabranowicz.com; vendomepress.com

PERELMAN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

As the final element of New York’s 20-year redevelopment of the World Trade Center district, the Perelman Performing Arts Center stands out as a new cultural destination. Strikingly clad in glass-insulated, translucent marble, the massive 129,000-squarefoot jewel box plays host to three venues of varying sizes.

Designed by Rex in collaboration with executive architect Davis Brody Bond, theater consultant Charcoalblue and acoustician

Threshold Acoustics, this feat of engineering was close to a decade in the making and matches the splendor of the equally impressive Oculus transportation hub and 9/11 Museum nearby. With interiors by Rockwell Group for its theaters, lobbies and post-performance bars, the new venue is a can’t-miss stop for culture-loving New Yorkers. pacnyc.org

TABLE FOR TWO

TWENTY THREE GRAND

Located between the bustling neighborhoods of SoHo and Tribeca, Twenty Three Grand is slated to become one of New York’s new go-to hot spots. There, elevated global cuisine is prepared by an all-female kitchen helmed by executive chef Ashley Rath and tastefully presented in an indoor-outdoor setting that exudes a sense of livable luxury. Stylist and interior design consultant Melissa Bowers drew inspiration from Philip Johnson’s seminal Glass House and Europe’s many atrium cafes when delicately staging the restaurant’s greenhouse interiors. Velvet banquettes, Brochier textiles, vintage frosted-Murano-glass sconces and Lelièvre-produced Jean Cocteau wallpaper make for a romantic, buzzy atmosphere. twentythreegrand.com

LONDON CALLING SOANE

BRITAIN

This September, Soane Britain is moving shop to a new location in the city. Taking up residence on Madison Avenue, the company is marking its 10th anniversary with a new showroom that showcases the best of British craftsmanship in delightful, immersive spaces. Pairing its own gamut of rattan furnishings, heritage upholsteries and top-quality luminaires with chic antiques, the flagship’s various rooms have been masterfully curated to foster a distinct atmosphere. Each draws visitors away from the hustle and bustle of the street outside to immerse them in a design bliss of Greek embroidery, botanical prints and such classic pieces as the brand’s signature Owl flush pendant lamps or Rattan Whalebone dining chairs. A collection of patterned fabrics developed in collaboration with London-based designer and antiques dealer Adam Bray that launches this fall will also be on view at the showroom, giving British design-lovers even more reason to pay a visit. soane.co.uk

TRANSFORMATION

THE ASTOR

One of the Upper West Side’s finest examples of prewar architecture, The Astor was constructed by its namesake, a descendant of one of New York’s most prominent families, in 1901. Defined by large woodburning fireplaces, gracious moldings and solid-wood flooring in a herringbone pattern, the luxurious residence has been a staple of the neighborhood for over a century. However, recently, the midrise property has undergone a thorough restoration. Design firm Pembrooke & Ives has orchestrated a revitalization that brought the landmarked building up to date without compromising on the details that make it so distinct. Also involved in the process was Ash NYC—the creative agency behind such historically informed hotels as Baltimore’s Ulysses and Detroit’s The Siren—who was tapped for the design of several of the building’s model residences. In addition, three new penthouses are in the works to complete the landmark’s rejuvenation. theastor.com

Designer Jessie Nelson was studying post-war Eastern European architecture (noting its oppressive, yet fascinating sculptural perspective) when he began working in concrete— the primary material of his Side I table. Brutalist architecture greats like Marcel Breuer and Paul Rudolph were known for using stacked, layered and repeated forms in their building plans, and it is that specific rhythmic effect that Arteriors sought inspiration from when designing the Waylon Chandelier. As family legacies go, the story and success of Nemacolin certainly stands out as a captivating journey. It all began in 1987, when Maggie Hardy’s father decided to purchase a former family hunting reserve and its large plot of land to create a place where they could enjoy fishing together. Joseph A. Hardy III was already the founder of 84 Lumber Company, and he recognized the value of the property. Soon, this favorite fishing spot turned into a lifelong project father and daughter have shared. Decades later, it has been transformed into a luxurious getaway comprising The Chateau, Falling Rock, The Homes and The Estates—each its

own vacation experience. The property’s amenities range from PGA-approved golf courses, tours of Frank Lloyd Wright masterpieces and wine tastings, to animal encounters, spa services and plein air painting courses. It leaves one to wonder, what could possibly come next? With the passing of her father earlier this year, Hardy knew that Nemacolin’s next chapter needed to be something special. Enter, The Grand Lodge. “Technically, it will be a remodel of the historic lodge that was here when Dad first purchased the property, but I like to think of it as a revitalization and reimagination. The original building possesses the spirit of our resort, and we’ve embraced that with a luxury twist.”

Left From iconic rooms and suites to showstopping dining, The Chateau has it all. Right The Grand Lodge will combine woodsy charm with reimagined all-suite interiors and elegant amenities, like personalized butler services. Adventure (and luxury) await. Opposite top Luxurious leisure inspired by the renowned architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, Falling Rock is a bespoke oasis—and was rated with five stars by Forbes. Opposite bottom Stretching across more than 2,200 acres in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania, Nemacolin offers guests a getaway like no other. Photography Courtesy of Nemacolin

MISE EN PLACE

Once Studio Heimat met the owners of this Palo Alto, California, Colonial, it was clear that the couple was ready to shake things up and have some fun with their renovation. “They weren’t looking for a big white kitchen,” explains the firm’s co-founder Alicia Cheung. “This is a young family that loves to travel, so we were inspired by European style and incorporated pieces that

feel more like furniture—including the two islands with open toe kicks.”

A new doorway and windows now physically, and visually, connects the kitchen to the adjacent sunroom while providing a natural dividing line between the prep areas for cooking and baking. In fact, one of Studio Heimat’s top priorities for this project was to accommodate the functional needs of the wife, a professional baker. “Everything has a place,” Cheung says. “A double cookie sheet fits perfectly in the refrigerator, and there’s a hidden pantry with a sink where messier baking items can be tucked away.”

As for the materials palette, the design firm and clients settled on a cool mix of white and dark-green metal perimeter cabinets, a natural oak bar area backed with an unexpected botanical wallpaper, dusty-green islands with brass inlay, and a herringbone mosaic backsplash that continues onto the wall between the kitchen and sunroom. Instead of sticking to just one hardware finish, they opted to use black metal and nickel on the perimeter and brass on th e islands and lighting overhead. The result, Cheung says, is “a mix of warm and cold accents that feels interesting.” studioheimat.com

The sunroom serves as a dining area with a banquette upholstered in a Missoni flame-stitch pattern. The adjacent kitchen boasts an oak bar area backed with Jimmy Cricket’s Jungle wallpaper; rolling ladders provide easy access to tall storage.

“ This minimalist cabinet features contrasting rustic knotty hickory and matte black paint. The upper metalframe doors don’t have any decorative hardware, relying on a touch-to-open feature, while the lower doors have elegant brushed-brass pulls.”

“Glass cabinets are a beautiful way to add a personal touch in the kitchen. This homeowner requested a modern twist on French style and a place to display her heirloom pieces.”

–CHRISTINA GARCIA LYSAUGHT, layereddimensionsid.com

“I was inspired by bold vintage kitchens from the 1940s and ’50s. The built-in display cabinet makes this kitchen feel less utilitarian and more playful.”

BONUS ROOM

ELIZABETH REYNOLDS INTERIORS

When repeat clients called upon Elizabeth Reynolds to help complete their newly built house in Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina, the designer was presented with a unique challenge: The room adjacent to the main kitchen didn’t yet have a dedicated function, and the family of five needed some guidance on how best to use the space.

How does this room function? This area does everything from serving as a mudroom and laundry room to a working kitchen and bar area. The wife bakes and the husband cooks, so they each have their own zone with the necessary storage.

Sounds like a real workhorse! What is packed in here? There’s storage for entertaining essentials, a dishwasher, sink, wall ovens, wine fridge, glass bar cabinet, shoe cubbies by the door, laundry hidden in the island, and pullout shelves to air-dry items that are concealed by metal-mesh doors.

Tell us about the inspiration behind the color and pattern choices. The clients wanted to have fun with color and create a happy space. A palette inspired by the sky, dark-blue water, and crisp green grass felt so specific to this locale. We chose non-murky, clear hues and customized the floor tiles to match. Both the subway tile and the lighting lend a turn-of-the-20 th -century vibe, and the glass-front bar cabinet breaks up the cabinetry. elizabethreynoldsinteriors.com

Since 1999, the skilled professionals at Appliances Connection have been connecting their clients with the perfect makes and models from their vast selection of premium appliance brands. “We’re all about connections, in fact, it’s in our name,” says senior brand manager, Hannah Pregont. “Our highly-trained customer service team is available 24/7 to make purchasing the ideal appliances simple and seamless, regardless of taste, lifestyle or budget.” And for those who want a bit more expert guidance, Appliances Connection is there to help.

“Our on-staff architects and designers are ready to take you from inspiration to installation,” adds Abdel Tarchid, architect and senior designer. “When you work with us, the space of your dreams is just a few clicks away.”

SOME EXPERT ADVICE

What is Appliances Connection’s primary rule for great kitchen design? Abdel Tarchid says, “When renovating or designing a kitchen, the right appliances are the most important ingredient. With that in mind, I always advise my clients to choose their kitchen appliances before deciding on their cabinets. That way, they are ensured a seamless fit and feel.”

AN INTELLIGENT APPROACH

“Having a well-connected smart home with the most innovative appliances is the new standard in luxury living,” Pregont shares. “In the kitchen, we believe a smart oven is a worthwhile investment. With the ability to download recipes, create menus, pre-heat remotely or walk the family chef through a preparation process, it really enhances the at-home cooking experience. Some models even offer voice commands or motion sensors that automatically open the door when you’re carrying a heavy roasting pan, while camera-enabled devices allow you to check the roast and turn it up or down from your phone, tablet or other device. Smart ovens are a true must if you’re looking to elevate your kitchen.”

A long-term commitment to exceptional design, outstanding quality and innovative ideas results in living spaces that enhance people’s lives. For proof, look no further than Bilotta Kitchen & Home. Bilotta has been building beautiful living spaces for nearly 40 years, with a particular emphasis on the “home” in its name. They do so much more than just kitchens, as shown in the included project photos, which showcase custom oak millwork throughout a Manhattan apartment designed by Sarah Witkin of Bilotta Architecture and Michelle Pereira of Innato Interiors. Built in Bilotta’s partner factory in Pennsylvania, bathroom vanities, a home office, a study and interior doors and paneling throughout demonstrate the custom craftsmanship that comes from working with Bilotta. Regina Bilotta, who co-owns Bilotta Kitchen & Home with her siblings, Maria and Jimmy, says, “The beauty of our work culminates in a product more like furniture than cabinetry.”

ON-TREND TRIO

The Bilotta team outlines three materials that are maintaining favor.

• Natural stone slabs: They bring beautiful organic movement into contemporary spaces.

• Unconventional metals: More exotic varieties with tonal layers lend subtle warmth while retaining a natural feel versus traditional brass or chrome.

• Natural wood with desaturating stains: Clients want the rich look of organic wood without the overpowering red/yellow tone of its natural color. Our factory is excellent at achieving any desired color on wood.

END USER ETHOS

“Every client creates a unique opportunity to invent something new; they are the inspiration for the development of the design and our practice at large,” Bilotta shares. “We look at our clients with a sense of gratitude and enthusiasm for the chance to collaborate and create.”

Fresh Perspective

Modern flair meets New York tradition in a family’s comfortably elegant Fifth Avenue apartment.

Interior Design: Marie Flanigan, Sydney Manning, Maddie Farmen and Kelsey Grant, Marie Flanigan Interiors Home Builder: Vlad Tomasevic, Vectra Construction

he graciously proportioned prewar co-ops that overlook Central Park have become as much a part of the upper Fifth Avenue landscape as such celebrated neighbors as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim, albeit in a more discreet fashion. One such building, designed in the 1920s by noted architect J.E.R. Carpenter, lured a family with its elegant plasterwork and oak paneling, lofty ceilings and views on all four sides. But the apartment, which had been reconfigured from two units by a previous owner, leaned a bit dark and formal for their tastes.

Enter Marie Flanigan. A former architect herself, the designer has a knack for understanding spaces and bringing a clean, layered aesthetic to contemporary and classic dwellings alike. Having worked on the owners’ weekend abode, she also knew how to bridge their individual aesthetic preferences—the husband is partial to modern design and bold color while the wife prefers a traditional look and neutral hues— and make the apartment a real family home. Fortunately, the project was well-suited for achieving this marriage of styles. “New York City is a beautiful juxtaposition of old-world charm and cutting-edge atmosphere, and this apartment is no exception,” Flanigan says. For her and her team, which included lead designer Sydney Manning, the challenge was to modernize the space while enhancing its original character.

The first order of business was to refine the floor plan in collaboration with general contractor Vlad Tomasevic. In addition to giving the kitchen a new range hood and lightening the space with Calacatta marble counters, they transformed the apartment’s secondary living room into a primary suite and recast the former primary bedroom as a charming bedroom and play space for the couple’s daughters. As for the wife, she desired “an office in her closet, a kind of sanctuary where she could get some work done,” Flanigan explains. Painted a soothing pale pink, the newly tailored area is at once serene and inviting.

Working with designers Maddie Farmen and Kelsey Grant, Flanigan and Manning also

strategized ways to maximize light throughout. That meant brightening up dark floorboards and toning down the wall paneling’s yellow undertones for a more natural look. Echoing the millwork detailing elsewhere with a contemporary twist, the team also installed new white paneling in both the kitchen and primary bedroom.

The desire for a fresh, modern take continues with the furnishings and fabric choices. “It was all about making things easy to live with,” Manning notes. “The wife would say, ‘I love it, but is it comfortable? Can I just curl up with the kids for an afternoon?’ ” While ensuring that the carpets underfoot were buttery soft and the upholstery inviting, performance fabrics and multicolor weaves keep everything kid-friendly. “We like to design spaces that people can relax and live life in without cringing every time somebody spills a drink,” Flanigan notes.

Against a mostly neutral background, the team introduced color with fabrics such as the gleaming blue silk-and-cotton velvet that swathes a bespoke sofa in the office. Azure hues show up again in the family room’s graphic rug and lambswool-satin draperies. And more vibrant accents come courtesy of the clients’ art collection, acquired in concert with curatorial and art advisory firm Goodman Taft, and which includes a showstopping acrylic work by Katherine Bradford to welcome guests in the foyer.

Meanwhile, the nearby dining room’s moody floral walls are a holdover from the original space that the clients weren’t initially sure about keeping. “We were coming from a loft in SoHo,” the wife says, “and this new apartment had a crystal chandelier and purple draperies.” But the team was certain that, paired with modern lighting fixtures, contemporary furnishings and neutral accents, the botanical wallpaper would work.

They were right. What Flanigan calls “a juxtaposition of styles” has resulted in an interior that perfectly blends the couple’s disparate tastes and “feels collected over time,” the designer explains. “When you walk into each room, you can touch and see the type of craftsmanship that is typically only found in a historic home, but the clean lines of the furniture and layered textures make each space feel modern and refreshed.”

Fluid Visions

Dreamscapes become objects of beauty at the hands of artist Brianna Lance.

For painter Brianna Lance, inspiration comes in many forms: meditation, tarot readings and dreams to name a few. In these spaces, the ego becomes an afterthought and creativity an endless reservoir that she can tap into whenever she needs it.

Her richly detailed, colorful tableaus are filled with evocative symbols and imagery— cresting azure ocean waves, a black-andwhite snake slithering through a pear, or a pointillistic landscape of swirling yellow flowers that often springs up while meditating. Lance, who works out of a bright apartment in the East Village, also finds inspiration in other artists’ fantastical, intricate works, like Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights “There’s so much to look at,” she says. “It makes you feel like you can keep rediscovering it.” It’s the kind of feeling she hopes her own work evokes in viewers. “My goal is for people who collect my art to never find it boring.”

Lance has painted throughout her life, first learning techniques as a child from Bob Ross as well as from her grandfather, who recreated famous artists’ works on the back covers of Reader’s Digest But it wasn’t until the COVID-19 pandemic that she started pursuing the creative endeavor full-time. What began as a way to “occupy her brain from spinning out” has since evolved into a rigorous artistic practice. After a successful career in fashion, Lance became disillusioned with her contributions to cycles of waste and consumerism. Coming back to painting was, in her words, “the first choice I ever really made for myself as far as saying, ‘This is what I want to do.’ ”

Lately, Lance has been fascinated with the relationship between beauty and brutality, in part inspired by living in New York.

“I find the city so harsh in a lot of ways, and that makes me want to create things that are beautiful,” she remarks. But while her work may appear pretty on the surface, unsettling details often emerge upon further inspection—think: a cracked egg, a bleeding arrow and other Bosch-like flourishes. Either way, Lance leaves herself open to the varied visions that pop into her mind. “The ideas don’t come from me,” she explains. “So it’s not my responsibility to judge them.”

BETTER TOGETHER

In Larchmont, a design team harmonizes a historic abode with its 2000s addition, adding magic along the way.

LUXESOURCE.COM 209

ith its stone foundation and half-timber framing, the Tudorinspired house on the hill presented an enchanting countenance to motorists and passersby, but it wasn’t entirely what it seemed. Built in 1927 and nestled in a historic part of Larchmont, the structure concealed an interior very much at odds with its storybook façade. Ten years ago, a contemporary overhaul had nearly doubled its square footage but left the interior spaces feeling out of sync with their more traditional shell. “It was a myriad of styles, colors, textures and materials,” describes designer Kacy Ellis, slyly adding: “In other words, it was a total dream design job.”

Fortunately, the new owners shared Ellis’ enthusiastic view. For this family of Brooklyn transplants looking for a fresh patch of grass to call home, the dwelling answered a yearning for both more space and a change of venue for their two school-age daughters. More to the point, they were able to see the upside of the previous renovation, which had already bumped out the back of the house, creating spaces better suited to modern living. “It’s a special house in that the framework was all there, but it needed work,” the husband says.

The initial brief included a total rewrite of the kitchen and baths, an updated back staircase, the addition of a new mudroom and laundry room, and the installation of white oak floorboards throughout. (“At one point, you could stand in the kitchen and see four different kinds of flooring,” the wife recalls.) Architect Stephen Moser helmed the project, collaborating with Ellis on the interior finishes and millwork, while general contractor Bobby Noonan was hands on for carpentry and all aspects of the redesign. The scope soon expanded into an extensive renovation of the entire house, including the conversion of a screening room on the third floor into a playroom for the kids. Finally, a later phase saw the creation of an attached pool house, outdoor kitchen and pool, as well as landscaping designed by John Imbiano.

One thing was clear: Streamlining the interior architecture and finessing the awkward transitions between the 1920s residence and its 2013 addition would be key to making the dwelling work in the present. “Because the house

had been so substantially altered, we were lucky to be given a tabula rasa on the interior,” Moser says. “It’s in a historic area, but there’s also a legacy of these contemporary renovations, so in some ways we were threading the needle.”

Realigning passageways and enlarging the openings throughout the main level created an enfilade that unfolds with balletic ease. Once that orderly flow was established, the team turned to the material palette and found their muse in the home’s original stonework and oak paneling. Strategically exposing peeks of masonry throughout the new corridors created a link to the past while also providing a smoother segue between rooms. Equally important was bringing some of the contemporary flavor of the addition to the domicile’s historic front rooms—a task accomplished through the implementation of slatted oak dividers. “The screens were a way to define these spaces, create privacy and knit together the two very different parts of this house,” the architect notes.

To dress the interiors, Ellis draped the home in neutral swaths of cream and gray embellished with rich tones: a tobacco sofa adds a sunny punch to the living room, a garnet rug grounds the dining room and a wine-red pendant enlivens the entry like an exuberant swipe of lipstick. The wife, an aesthete with a keen interest in furniture, wanted to play an active part in the decorating process—a designer-client scenario that doesn’t always bode well. But, as Ellis recounts, “her enthusiasm for design was palpable and infectious.” The two hit it off and their shared passion facilitated several shopping trips to BDDW, Egg Collective and The Future Perfect, where they scored some of the home’s most noteworthy furniture and lighting. Ellis wisely blended those statement pieces with choice vintage silhouettes for a look that feels fresh, curated and, above all, comfortable.

By the project’s end, the interiors’ evolution took on the color of an imaginary cocktail party where traditional became a little less buttoned up, contemporary assumed a softer stance, and both styles mingled happily into the wee hours. All in all, it’s a harmonious backdrop for a vibrant young family. “When people visit, they always say that the house is very modern, but that it’s also inviting and approachable,” the wife says. “It feels good when others are able to sum it up perfectly like that—it makes us think we got it exactly right.”

The design of a historic Greenwich Colonial imports the best of England to Connecticut, no passport necessary.

L U X E S O U R C E C O M 220
Interior Design: Lee Ann Thornton and Allie Macaluso, Lee Ann Thornton Interiors

When 17th-century captain John Smith deemed this corner of the colonies a part of New England, he was onto something. The state now known as Connecticut abounds with British charm from village to hillock. But for designer Lee Ann Thornton’s clients, a further whiff of Old Blighty was required for their late 1800s Greenwich Colonial. “They’re traditional people at heart, but they have a fun spirit, so a timeless, fresh approach was truly the right thing for them,” Thornton says.

As you might have guessed from their layered and pattern-rich abode, the clients are Anglophiles, right down to their pet corgis (Queen Elizabeth II’s favored dog breed). “The owners love visiting England and have a beautiful antiques collection, much of which is English,” shares designer Allie Macaluso, Thornton’s colleague and daughter.

“Overall, they have a very British sensibility, which gave us a cue as to the direction we were going to take with all of the color, happiness and chintz. This was a dream brief for us because it’s how we love to decorate, too.” Adds Thornton, “It became evident that these clients wanted their house to feel enveloped. Think ‘Cozy’ with a capital C!”

And that it is. The house already shared a bit of DNA with any Cotswolds cottage in that its rooms were intimate in scale—especially the bedrooms on the second floor. There, the designers deployed a range of space-maximizing tricks, from ripping out closets to covering up a window. “Anything to grab a little extra wall space,” Thornton says.

But what the sleeping quarters might lack in square footage, they certainly make up for in sumptuous design. Each epitomizes the beloved Jane Austen quote that “there is nothing like staying at home for real comfort.” Textured wallpaper from London’s own Guy Goodfellow wraps the vaulted ceiling in the primary, where a canopy bed is notched charmingly between two built-in shelves stocked to the brim. “The room is literally wrapped in books and beautiful items.

It’s a jewel box,” Macaluso comments. Nearby, a daughter’s room is awash in a cosseting flurry of pattern on pattern replete with ruffle-edged lampshades and a pastel wallpaper flitting with birds. And, for the guest bedroom, everything from the bed skirt to the window treatments is adorned in the same floral print, with a recovered family heirloom settee tucked into a fairy-tale alcove. “We wanted it to feel like a gorgeous hotel room in London,” Thornton says.

Moving downstairs, the public spaces showcase a similar mastery of pattern mixing, albeit with more physical and visual room to breathe. “I’m from Los Angeles, which has this gorgeous aesthetic where things are soft and welcoming, but very clean,” Thornton shares. “That sensibility mixed with the divine charm of English interiors is kind of our sweet spot.”

Key to bringing an element of cleanness to this home is the duo’s use of parallel lines and strict borders, which provide a sturdy juxtaposition. Take the whimsical floral drapes across the family and breakfast rooms, whose vertical edges are trimmed with a red-striped cotton tape. Or the lighting program—a medley of linear fixtures in crisp black finishes. Wall treatments too work to introduce a more contemporary perspective, from the mudroom’s milk-white shiplap paneling to the family room’s cool-toned grass-cloth wallcovering to the living room’s gleaming blue paint job, which introduces the boundless, expansive feel of the Malibu sky into the home’s collected milieu.

There and throughout, the clients’ storied antique pieces mingle with joyful fabrics and flourishes, resulting in “a layered look with an old soul,” Macaluso says. A prime example: In the breakfast room off the kitchen, the clients’ existing brown-wood Windsor chairs “didn’t feel as warm as we wanted,” Thornton says. The fix: custom dressings. “To channel that very English look, we added seat cushions and slipcovers with tiebacks. Now, they look like they’ve been around a long time, and that was a big impetus for this project. We wanted it to feel like the house had owned these furnishings for many years.”
