EDITOR’S LETTER

ZOOM LAND!

Back in June, I was moderating a Zoom meeting when my husband popped into my office to announce that we had a buyer for our house. “We need to look at this new place, pronto!” Lickety-split, we were moving out of the home we have lived in for nearly a decade and into a fab new rental further east and across from the beach. With all this taking place in the midst of Covid, my head was swirling. Like so many, our home has become a safe haven; nearly every hour of every day spent under that roof. As I write this note, it’s day three in our new place and I’m back to Zooming away. Yes, I had that moment of, “Yikes, what have we done?” But, more than ever, I am grateful to have a new home to settle into. I hope that this September/October issue brings you inspiration for your own home and a respite from what’s happening in the world.

ow more than ever, we’re contemplating what comforts bring joy to a home. To that end, designers are all about elements that create tranquility and contentment in private spaces, and found that it’s the simple things—cozy outdoor areas, the feel of soft linens and the play of light on a wall—that truly create happiness. For Brooke and Steve Giannetti, a designer and architect, pleasure can be found in the fresh air. “Connections to the garden are at the heart and soul of what we do,” says Steve. The husband-andwife team lives on a farm in Southern California where they’ve perfected the art of indoor-outdoor living. Their secret lies in making the great outdoors more intimate. “The feeling of being in an open meadow is sometimes not the most relaxing,” explains Steve. “We found that if you can break an alfresco space into loosely defined rooms—using features like a wall, a garden border or a tree—it makes a space feel more inviting and protected.” Their farm is full of examples, such as a seating arrangement placed under the canopy of a heritage oak, a fire pit ringed by a sectional or a table located by a vegetable garden. “Being outside is something we crave all year round,” Brooke says. “Living in nature calms us and brings us into the moment. It is perhaps the best luxury.” In Atlanta, designer Erika Hollinshead Ward finds luxury where the day begins and ends. “Having a bed that’s made with good linens is a treat,” she says. “You may not be able to control what happens in the world, but sleeping with beautiful linens is a joy.” Ward favors bamboo sheets for their sustainability and hand, noting the fabric becomes even softer with washing, and for curtains, she turns to cotton linen. “The weave of a crisp linen makes a great canvas for color and pattern,” she says. “To me, drapery is like art on the wall—and it can elevate and finish a space the same way a good blazer makes an outfit.” Brad Ford, a New York City designer, calls natural light “very healing” and seeks to add as much of it as possible to any dwelling, be it a city apartment or a house in the country. “In a dense metropolis, privacy can be an issue, so we like to add solar shades or sheers on windows,” he says. “These allow you privacy but also an amount of light.” Ford is also known for strategically placing mirrors and furniture with reflective surfaces in a room to amplify the light. When designing a new home, he always advocates for as many windows as possible. “I would live in a glass house if I could,” he says. “I believe there is no better mood enhancer than natural light.” For these design professionals, providing easy indulgences is rewarding. “Many of my clients come home exhausted after a long day,” Ward says. “If I can give them a space that’s tailored to them, and that provides comfort, I am also fulfilled.”

TONE FOR COLOR GURU EVE ASHCRAFT, SUCCESSFUL SCHEMES BOIL DOWN TO INSTINCT. WRITTEN BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT

Eve Ashcraft knows a good palette. A formally trained painter, she earned her stripes as a color specialist for Martha Stewart and today touts an elite moniker—architectural color consultant— lending her expertise to residential homes, cultural institutions, public works projects and corporate branding the world over. Luxe called upon Ashcraft to learn more of her vibrant and innate approach. eveashcraft.com Formative influence. My mother was a painter. We had a yellow living room with fuchsia silk pillows. I would come home from school and she’d say, ‘Grab a brush’—she’d be painting the kitchen cabinets, again. It never occurred to me until I started working with clients that anyone would be afraid of color. Less is best. Fan decks are an instrument of torture. I’ve had clients test 30 colors before calling me. They were probably feeling insecure to begin with, and there’s this internet problem of, ‘I’ll just scroll to the next page and oops, it’s 4 a.m.’ Endless choice can have a negative effect, so I edit and distill my ideas before sharing.

Go-to paint trick. When I want a space to feel calm, one easy tip is to reduce contrast, especially between building components, like the trim, walls and ceiling. Make those elements the same or almost the same color and boundaries will disappear, creating a sense of spaciousness. Golden rule. The more color you have, the more color you can use. It’s like a great party—just jam everyone in there.

LX_COM33_Radar_5MinutesWith.indd 62

“I love using the resources and collections I keep in my studio to build these inspiration boards, either for my own edification or to show clients possibilities,” says Eve Ashcraft of her fantasy color palette.

photo: eve ashcraft.

Artist’s intuition. The only thing I love about getting older is that I’ve developed respect for my instincts. There are moments when I walk into a room and just know. I had clients with this tasteful blue parlor, but there was something sad about it. I said, ‘You’re going to kill me, but this room should be tobacco with cream trim.’ Six months later, I received a love letter about how they never leave it now. That kind of transformation is luxury.

Open DIALOGUE

THREE ARTISANS REFLECT ON THE CREATIVE JOURNEY AND FINDING COMFORT IN THEIR WORK. WRITTEN BY HEATHER CARNEY

RAYMOND BARBEROUSSE Studio PGRB, Miami

Raymond Barberousse’s path from architect to lighting designer is a telling reminder that good things can result from trying times. Shortly after buying a house in 2009, he was laid off from a Chicago architecture firm, leaving him to D.I.Y. much of his home’s furnishings. His sculptural lighting designs caught the eye of an owner of a local decor store, and the rest is history. Today, Barberousse and his wife split their time between Chicago and Miami drawing inspiration from both locales. “Chicago is energetic; Miami is more laid-back,” says the designer. As a member of the Black Artists + Designers Guild, he is an advocate for promoting inclusivity in the design community, but ultimately, he says, “It’s about the work. I want the work to represent itself.”

DENISE MCKENZIE-LEE

Enkee Ceramics, Chicago

“Don’t underestimate me,” says Denise McKenzie-Lee, known for her earthy ceramics layered with texture. Her foray into the medium began with a gift certificate to a pottery class. “I love entertaining, so I wanted to make my own set of dishes,” she recalls. “The instructor said, ‘It’s going to be a long time before you can do that.’ It wasn’t. I’m prolific when I become interested in something.” Her pieces, crafted with porcelain and stoneware, are perfectly imperfect reflecting a gritty sentiment. “I call it rustic modern. I’m attracted to textures: a rusty tray, rocks, rough edges, things that look burnt,” she says. Next up: experimenting with glass and non-functional work. No one is underestimating her now.

ANIKA POITIER

ASP & Company, Los Angeles Anika Poitier’s first love was film. Yet with a child on the way, she says, “I needed a creative outlet that was more kid-friendly.” So Poitier teamed up with her interior designer mother on a textile and accessories line. Their first collection centered on female artists and grew from there. A signature design is an infinity-style serpent. “It symbolizes strength and the journey to empowerment,” says the designer, who employs her filmmaker eye when selecting materials, and is drawn to linen for its transparent and natural qualities. “I love the way light shines through. We all want to exist in a calm, nurturing space.” Today, that notion rings more true than ever.

POST MASTER @jojotastic

RAISING the BAR RUPEE BAR SEATTLE

WHO: Joanna Hawley-McBride, a Seattlebased blogger, prop stylist and content creator who’s garnered a Pinterest following of 3.8 million and whose website, jojotastic.com, is a go-to for casual lifestyle inspiration. WHAT: Soulful self-reflection and storytelling, plus small-space living tips. She also teaches small businesses how to grow with The Jojotastic School of Social Media. WHY: With a degree in industrial design and experience as a product designer and trend scout for Nordstrom and Anthropologie, HawleyMcBride has an eye for beautiful things.

With an aesthetic that corresponds to its description of the menu— “inspired by the flavors of India and Sri Lanka”—Rupee Bar packs a punch the moment guests step in from beneath the oft-gray skies of Seattle to the peacock-greenswathed room. Selected for its warmth, rich Oregon walnut tops the bar and wraps the casework, while gleaming brass, slatted pendant lamps and Indian clay tiles interfuse to up the cozy factor in the diminutive 700-square-foot space. Collaborating with Rupee Bar owners Joe Sundberg, Rachel Johnson and Patrick Thalasinos for a second time—the first was on the trio’s well-known Manolin, also in Seattle—Heliotrope Architects crystallized the vision the trio had for their latest enterprise. “Like all of our restaurant clients, they came to us with a vision and our job was to bring it to fruition,” says Heliotrope principal Mike Mora. “This group is incredibly hands-on and everyone brought ideas to the table. Also, the owners have strong design sensibilities, and what you see at Rupee is very much of their hand.” rupeeseattle.com 082 / luxesource.com

FIRST LOOK SNOW PEAK HEADQUARTERS

Even though it was crafted around the invitation “Let’s dwell outdoors, together,” the new Snow Peak USA flagship and headquarters in Portland didn’t take the design of its interiors for granted. With an eye toward community-building and incorporating both Japanese and Pacific Northwest influences throughout, the company tapped Skylab Architecture to transform a 1980s four-story building into an inviting multifunction venue: office, event and retail space, a showroom, a restaurant and outdoor areas. Snow Peak’s core belief in “nature’s ability to heal and restore humanity,” according to brand founder Yukio Yamai (a hand-painted mural of whom greets visitors upon arrival, above), is evident from the materials used, including Douglas-fir beams milled and stacked into a modern retail fixture system that nods to traditional Japanese building methods. snowpeak.com

IN HER WORDS: “I’m the nerd who clips magazine articles and mails them to friends, so it’s no wonder I’ve made a career of sharing. In my mind, it’s all about telling your story in a holistic, beautiful way.”

SPOTLIGHT SHAYLA COPAS ON MODERN-DAY ENTERTAINING

“I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, and that region is woven into my aesthetic,” says luxury tastemaker and author Shayla Copas. “Entertaining is about creating a welcoming environment, and that meshes perfectly with the Pacific Northwest vibe.” Copas knows how to do it up big, as evidenced by the vast array of themed shindigs showcased in her book, Four Seasons of Entertaining. But given the times we’re living in, Luxe asked the lifestyle lodestar how to create that festive vibe on a more intimate scale. shaylacopas.com What’s your favorite part of entertaining in the fall? Nature really gives us a treat during the fall. Since the colors of foliage vary in each region, you can always look beyond your own area for even more inspiration. I enjoy using colors traditionally associated with the season and mixing them with the unexpected. In the Oktoberfest feature of the book, I used oranges and golds, which is a more familiar fall palette, but added a crisp blue accent shade. That color combination feels fresh yet still seasonal. How do you see entertaining being different this year? We’ll definitely have more outdoor celebrations. Fall weather can

be drastically different depending on where you’re located, but the season always lends itself to a very cozy feeling. If you do plan to entertain outdoors, include that detail on the invitation. It’s helpful for guests who are concerned about being in large groups. What tips would you offer those who are intimidated to entertain at home? My best tip is to be yourself and entertain from the heart. The recipes and other glamorous details are wonderful, but your guests can feel when you are opening your home with love. Think about how you would like to be welcomed into someone’s home and make sure you give that same emotion.

GLASS ACT “This year has brought unimaginable challenges, making it more important than ever to take time to support each other and to search for solace and beauty in our daily lives,” says glass artist extraordinaire Dale Chihuly, who, even at 78, continues to find fresh sources of inspiration. His latest collection, “Chihuly Merletto,” named after the Venetian cane-working technique of merletto, the Italian word for “lace”—debuted at Seattle’s Traver Gallery in the spring and will appear in exhibitions at botanical gardens and museums throughout 2021. Pieces are currently for sale at Chihuly Studio in Seattle. The artist shared the details of his latest tour de force with Luxe. chihuly.com What brought about “Chihuly Merletto?” I am always looking for new ways to challenge myself and my team, and I just happened to notice a similar quality between merletto and drawings that I made years ago with bunches of pencils clutched in my hand. I had never tried the technique, which was developed in Venice in the 15th century, but I had often admired it. Why is your method different from the Venetian one? The traditional Venetian technique of merletto is intricate, symmetrical and meticulous in its representation of lace. My work retains this delicate beauty of the lace but adds movement, creating the patterns within sloping, dynamic basket forms. The final effect is reminiscent of lace blowing in the wind.

THREE NEW BOOKS SHINE A LIGHT ON DESIGNERS WHOSE WORK IS THE DEFINITION OF STAR POWER.

▲ Designing Hollywood Homes: Movie Houses “I think he sees things cinematically, which brings a sense of narrative and drama to his work,” writes Diane Keaton in her foreword to designer Stephen Shadley’s first comprehensive monograph. The longtime friends have collaborated on numerous houses, several of which appear in the book, which is an ode to Shadley’s talent for creating homes with unparalleled allure—a skill he honed as a scenic artist for 20th Century Fox. But it is the epilogue that truly delights: a look at Shadley’s home, Potic Castle in the Catskill Mountains, which he describes as “a veritable guidebook of my travels.” rizzoliusa.com

▲ Golden Light: The Interior Design of Nickey Kehoe Todd Nickey and Amy Kehoe have had a devoted following since opening their Los Angeles studio and boutique in 2004. Their approach to design, which has attracted notable clients like Natalie Portman, is one of insatiable curiosity, and as they write in the foreword, “We are inspired by the everyday and the extraordinary…from minimal to maximal, quiet to baroque, but the real grandeur is in that ephemeral feeling that a space evokes.” The book tours homes they’ve created in Pasadena, Venice, Malibu and more, each displaying the firm’s “studied but unfussy” style. rizzoliusa.com 086 / luxesource.com

LX_PNW55_Scene.indd 86

▲ A Tale of Interiors Design partners Louisa Pierce and Emily Ward are firm believers in storytelling and “the art of more,” an approach to decorating that naturally leads to a visually indulgent book. Its pages show many of their A-List clients’ homes, of course—Josh Brolin’s love of wallpaper might surprise you—but interspersed are charming antique patterns and illustrations that give it the feel of a vintage scrapbook, perhaps one found at any of the estate sales they frequent. Also throughout are tips, advice and insights. It’s a celebration of organized abundance and personal style, with more than a dash of humor. rizzoliusa.com

THE WELL-DESIGNED KITCHEN + BATH

Excitement is permeating the kitchen and bath industry—just talk to an expert, and you’ll feel it too. Materials, both new and centuries old, are transcending the ordinary, even the “high-end” rubric; instead, they are interesting, they evoke warmth— they tell a story. The key words are no longer form and function but rather, beauty and technology. Together, these two formerly opposite elements create intimate spaces that are vividly original.

“If you begin at no, you’ll never get to yes.” Words Nancy Epstein has lived and worked by since designing her first piece of furniture more than 20 years ago. “I brought the design to our hometown cabinetmaker and he didn’t like it. I didn’t listen and had him make it anyway, and he was so taken by the results that he asked me to join his company designing products.” Such tenacity eventually led Epstein to found Artistic Tile, where she and her team aim to “make the world a better place … one tile at a time.” Today, her tile empire encompasses eight national showrooms, a cadre of reps working with hundreds of architects, designers and dealers, an engaging website, and 100,000 social media followers. “We are very ‘connected’ to our audience and their preferences, well beyond sales numbers,” she says.

“The gift of the genuine, the real, is the ultimate luxury, so the ultimate kitchen and bath should be outfitted with natural stone.”

MATERIAL MIX: WHAT’S TRENDING IN TILE + Brecciated marble slab. This is an iconic material for Artistic Tile; one Epstein loves so much, she permanently installs it in every new showroom. The color and sense of monumental energy of Breccia Imperiale, Breccia Viola and Arabescato Corchia make them perfect choices for giving visual stature to baths and kitchens. + Glass mosaic. “We love this material in geometric, floral and foliate mosaic designs, in colorful blends, in mirrored mixes and also in tonal white-on-white colorways,” she says. “Lately, we have been creating mosaics with an ombré effect in both kitchens and baths. + Quartzite slabs. The color of these natural stones is breathtaking, and their high resistance to acid etching and low porosity make them especially attractive to those who seek a prep surface that combines real beauty and ease of maintenance.

For over 60 years, Liebherr Appliances has been dedicated to only one thing: the manufacturing of refrigerator and freezer appliances. This commitment has resulted in innovative product solutions that have forever changed the way people function in their kitchen. “In 1993, we became the first manufacturer to convert our entire appliance offering to HCFC/CFC-free refrigerants, in order to protect the environment and ozone layer,” says marketing manager Daniela Maldonado. Liebherr’s refrigerators and freezers stand out for their intuitive operation, energy efficiency and modern design, with features like BioFresh technology that maximize the shelf life of groceries.

FINDING FRIDGE PERFECTION When looking for a refrigerator, make sure to choose one that can provide every solution to your clients’ needs, such as: + O ptimal food preservation for their ingredients and prepared food + Plenty of storage space for entertaining + A beautiful design that seamlessly integrates within their kitchen

PUTTING THE SPOTLIGHT ON SURFACES Porcelain. Kitchens are spaces for dinner, homework, lounging, entertaining and more. Homeowners are moving away from granite and toward porcelain for its resistance to stains, costeffectiveness and durability. Wood. Due to the popularity of open-concept floor plans, flooring choices are extending from space to space, like hardwood in the living area that continues into the kitchen. Oak and walnut are the most popular due to their durability. Stone Slabs. A slab backsplash is clean and adds just the right amount of drama to any kitchen.

The word “signature” resonates with Hammerton Lighting on two fronts. On the product side, its decorative lighting line, Hammerton Signature, speaks to the company’s unlimited customization options. Each light in the collection—whether in design, materials, options or craftsmanship—is a “signature” piece. Stylistically speaking, Hammerton’s “signature” is its relationship with nature as reflected in its designs. “Our aesthetic has always involved an exploration of the natural world,” says founder and vice president of design, Levi Wilson. “Filigree, Art Nouveau and Art Deco are great examples of this.” While the standard industry definition for custom lighting assumes a limited choice of options, in Hammerton’s hands “anything is possible”—a credo that has led the bespoke, entrepreneurial spirit of this American company for a quarter of a century.

EMPLOYEE-CENTRIC SUCCESS The “Made in America” ideology may be different for every American manufacturer, but at Hammerton it’s centered around the transformative power of each of its employees. “Every day at Hammerton, we design, engineer, fabricate, finish, pack, ship and service a unique assortment of products that are entirely different than the day before and the day after,” says president Bill Shott. “Fundamentally, we are tackling new problems and embracing new opportunities every hour of every day. We rely on the personal enterprise of each employee—their creativity, inventiveness, resilience, collaboration and problem-solving skills—to do this successfully. Bottom line, we recognize that Hammerton’s most valuable assets walk in and out of our doors daily.” What is more American than an unshakable belief in the power of the individual?

“Comfort and authenticity are foundational elements of today’s ‘luxury’ value proposition.”

VANGUARD FURNITURE vanguardfurniture.com |

vanguardfurniture

Anyone who has ever tried to sew a straight seam, build a cabinet or finish a piece of furniture knows how difficult it is. It requires not only experience and know-how, but creativity and a collaborative mindset. Enter western North Carolina-based Vanguard Furniture, the custom case goods and upholstery furniture maker, whose skilled artisans have elevated furniture production to a fine art. “From material selection to hand-applied, multi-step finishes, every detail is considered,” president Andy Bray says. Offered with endless customization options, Vanguard’s furniture speaks to the American mindset that home is the ultimate form of self-expression. “Each piece of Vanguard furniture reflects the authenticity of a unique material or design sensibility. And yet, each piece is tailored to the distinctive tastes and experiences of its imaginer,” Bray says.

INGENUITY AT ITS FINEST Over the years, Vanguard has innovated with new technologies to improve service. Operational efficiencies allow us to create one-of-a-kind pieces and have them available for delivery in fewer than four weeks. And our new 3D visualizer applies state-of-the-art technology to visualize custom options and finishes on the fly and to rotate and examine your creation from any angle.

CUSTOMIZATION: THE AMERICAN WAY The American spirit is more independent, and as a result, prizes customization. From a design standpoint, products must be scaled and tailored to American sensibilities; those who desire furniture of distinction because they value their independence and individuality. From the production standpoint, the only way to manifest that goal is to do it locally. American manufacturing—especially the way we do it at Vanguard—builds furniture one piece at a time, so that each can be unique.

“At Vanguard, everything we create involves provenance and customization.”

Gathering GROUNDS THE MODERN-DAY GREAT ROOM IS ALL ABOUT VERSATILITY. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY KATHRYN GIVEN

As we take solace in our houses, the kitchen’s role as the heart of the home has become more essential than ever—it’s where we take business calls, help our children with homework, gather for breakfast and evening meals, and enjoy a refreshing cocktail at day’s end. So, it comes as no surprise that blending the kitchen and family room into one great room layout is high on most clients’ wish lists. Today, designers are planning adaptable spaces ideal for prepping meals, breaking bread and intimate socializing, as seen in this stunning project by designer Adam Hunter.

BIG PICTURE

For designer Adam Hunter, this impressive space started as a dream. “I had a vision of an all-metal kitchen in a beautiful patina with a floating marble hood,” he explains. With the help of all-star architect Steve Giannetti, trusting clients and an ace custom cabinetry company, Hunter was lucky enough to see his fantasy come to life. adamhunterinc.com What a room! I wanted to change up my own aesthetic with this project and I certainly reached high. But it really started with doing something unique, which was creating an all-metal kitchen.

How did you decide on the marble hood? We actually had to frame the house so it could support the hood, but I knew we had to go for it! The marble, which my dealers call a pinot noir, has moments of eggplant, burgundy and just the right kind of gold. When it all gleams together at a certain point in the day, it’s magic.

PHOTOS: COURTESY ADAM HUNTER INC.

Talk to us about the cabinetry. Amuneal created some really luxurious textures and colors with stainless steel designs. We sort of invented a patina we’re calling “root beer.” It works so well with some of the other tones and materials found throughout the space. The glass cases flanking the range continue the view out to the backyard—they’re definitely a favorite feature.

GREAT HEIGHTS

To create a soaring space in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, designer Amber Brown Matlack of Brown Interiors knew she wanted to preserve the charm and history of the original 1935 Tudor-style residence when crafting this great room. After combining what was once a galley kitchen, small breakfast nook and dining room into a central area, she extended the ceiling into the attic to achieve a vaulted effect and expose the wooden beam. The warm color scheme evokes a nostalgic feel, including the mauve and gray tones on the cabinetry and a beautiful stone backsplash. Brown Matlack says she aimed for “a sense of openness and livability in the heartbeat of the house.” browninteriors.net

Times of introspective nesting have illuminated that such directives start at home, reinvigorating a discussion on the many ways design can enhance our mental and physical wellbeing. Here, we share an assortment of restorative spaces whose principles—thoughtful details, indulgent amenities and ample conversation with nature— provide ideas for sanctuaries large and small.

Knowing that the indoor pool would be used through the colder months, the team nestled the feature in the ground, adding a south-facing skylight. “Between the warmth of the rammed earth and the natural light, it’s a perfect winter pool,” says Historical Concepts principal Kevin Clark. “It doesn’t feel like a cold conservatory.”

Sweet 1ESCAPE A BRIDGEHAMPTON SPORTS BARN OFFERS THE ULTIMATE FAMILY RETREAT.

“With a remote property, you have the opportunity to create a destination,” says Kevin Clark, principal of Historical Concepts. And so it came to be that a family’s brief for a recreational outbuilding on their Bridgehampton estate evolved into a sports barn laden with wellness features. Surrounded by acres of pristine farmland, the structure demanded a sensitive approach, one that Historical Concepts—an architecture firm known for legacy properties rooted in place— was well-suited for. Alongside interior designer Steven Gambrel, landscape architect Edmund Hollander and master builder Michael Davis, who assembled the team, plans were drawn for a lowslung, cedar-clad activity center softly folded into the rolling terrain. The decision to nestle the barn into, not onto, the landscape is an exercise in both historical accuracy and ingenuity. First, it references semisubterranean potato barns local to the region. Second, it meets a Hamptons building code limiting accessory structures to 20 feet high, while still allowing for a three-story structure for all the family’s amenity wishes to live in harmony. In full, the sprawling retreat includes family offices, a large vaulted great room, a kitchen, an indoor lap pool and spa, men’s and women’s locker rooms and an exercise room—plus a sunken tennis court with viewing pavilion. “The lay of the land and the feel of a place reveal themselves when you put pen to paper,” says Clark. “The top floor gym has a wonderful

LX_COM33_TheLook_TheReport.indd 139

view over the property, and the sauna, steam and massage rooms round out the indoor activities,” shares Davis. “In addition to the gathering room, there is a suite of three family offices particularly helpful during these times.” Throughout, Gambrel’s interiors scheme—a medley of warm woods and chalky blue, green and sand hues—sets a restorative tone. “The palette is muted, based on the environment as inspiration,” he explains, and indeed, the natural setting inspires. Complementing the agrarian landscape, Hollander took care in employing native plantings, such as bayberry, winterberry and viburnum, to welcome birds, bees and other pollinators. “Healthy, living landscapes are essential to the wellness of all visitors, all species,” he notes. Like many affluent New Yorkers, the family decamped to their country residence in the early days of the pandemic. In turn, the beloved barn has become a haven beyond anything client or design team could have planned for—a hub of safety, togetherness and health. “One of the most rewarding parts of our job is when you see a place you designed be truly life-altering for a family,” says Clark, adding, “When you treat home as resort, there’s something magical about that.”

GOODVIBES THREE DESIGNERS SHARE A PRINCIPLE THAT SHAPES THEIR PERSONAL PRACTICE.

LAURENCE CARR

New York, New York Wabi-sabi is a worldview rooted in Japanese origin all about taming desire for perfection in design, freeing us to live more sustainably and impart truly authentic style in our homes. To seek it is to honor the patina and character of our interiors and collected pieces, find harmony with nature, honor simplicity and do away with excess clutter. I help clients seek wabi-sabi through utilization of the seven Zen principles— one of which, for example, is incorporating unique pieces from our clients’ own collections. This practice shifts focus from trendy items to those that have been built lovingly, and with noble materials. Together with our clients, we identify character-rich pieces and intentionally place them in different rooms as the sturdy roots of our interior design approach. laurencecarr.com

MACELLE ALBEDA

Pasadena, California Biophilia stems from Greek as “love of life” and is about our innate human need to be connected to nature. Biophilic design focuses on how to layer nature into interiors, whether through actual elements like

LX_COM33_TheLook_TheReport.indd 140

plants, stone, wood, water and natural light, or “biomimicry,” which are shapes and patterns that remind us of being outdoors. The benefits are substantial: Close proximity to nature triggers a dopamine response in our brains that promotes well-being, lowering blood pressure and stress. Starting from the most basic ways to inspire biophilia, you can paint walls in colors we find in nature, like green, blue and brown. Then move on to adding motifs and plants. Advanced options include stone walls, water features and changing the building’s access to natural light. studiomahal.com

NINA MAGON

Houston, Texas One way of fostering well-being at home that I believe in and have used with great results is Vastu Shastra, an Indian system of architecture similar to feng shui. In Vastu Shastra, there are 5 elements: Earth (Bhumi), Water (Jala), Air (Vayu), Fire (Agni), and Space (Akasha). The central part of a house is ruled by the space element. As all directions meet in the center, it is the holiest and most powerful zone. So when possible, I like to ensure that the most-used room—often the living area—is located in the direct center and designed with a minimal aesthetic for less clutter and low furniture to allow for plenty of natural light. This approach harmonizes the flow of energy throughout the home, which facilitates good health. contourinteriordesign.com

LOST in REVERIE

There are serene rooms and then there are rooms where serenity seems to emanate from the walls, softening your disposition on viewing. This elixir of a bedroom in Jackson Hole, Wyoming—a collaboration between WRJ Design and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson—is decidedly the latter. Here, designer Rush Jenkins and architect Ray Calabro sound off on achieving Zen in tandem. wrjdesign.com; bcj.com Set the scene. RC: The site for the house is on a butte that overlooks the Snake River Valley with extraordinary views. The bedroom is located at the southern, most private end of the home and is embedded into the gentle slope of the site, connecting with the landscape at a more immediate scale. RJ: There’s a calmness and a majestic beauty that surrounds you. That’s what the color palette, the lighting, the simplicity of the design were about—creating harmony with nature. Material connection. RC: The southern wall is smooth-formed cast-in-place concrete, the flooring is white oak with a custom finish, the window wall is aluminum with a clear anodized finish, and the ceiling is composed of panels of white oak. RJ: The rug is bamboo silk, the bed is really luxurious suede, the pillows are a cashmere plaid from Loro Piana. Those tonal elements are about continuity with the exteriors and the architecture. Design highlights. RC: The water feature that stretches along the master suite is dynamic. We placed mirror-finish stainless steel panels on the roof overhang above the stream. The combination of gently moving water and mirror reflects constantly changing patterns of light into the master suite throughout the day. The effect is magical. RJ: The seamless windows in this room actually open from the bottom. Can you imagine waking up hearing the water rippling and the birds chirping in the garden? Sometimes, you’ll see a moose having a drink. You don’t get closer to nature than that. Dream team. RC: WRJ’s selections reinforce the quiet elegance of the home. The luxe finishes and fabrics express their commitment to quality and attention to detail that are guiding principles in the architecture. RJ: This house was a unified vision. The client wanted peace and simplicity, and every team member came at this design from the same philosophy.

Home WORK

Some decamped to dining tables. Others converted spare rooms to studies. In the immediate wake of the pandemic, remote work culture shifted inexorably, and with it, the landscape of home office design. With more and more companies adopting permanently flexible policies, it’s no surprise that designers are seeing an uptick in office updates. On deck? Spaces that foster productivity and focus, certainly—but also tranquility and moodboosting chic. Take a cue from these calming desks around the country.

▲ FRESH PERSPECTIVE In Vero Beach, Florida, designer Kevin Dumais’ unconventional furniture configuration is twofold. First, it makes way for foot traffic between the room’s two entrances. Second, it sets the client up to take advantage of the resplendent views and shifting sunlight throughout the day. dumaisid.com

BETTER TOGETHER With restorative garden views for the taking, designer Bryan Yates aligned a Dallas, Texas, couple’s work areas along a single window wall. The decision has a reverse fishbowl effect: The elegantly minimal design can be conversely enjoyed from the outdoor entertaining spots. yatesdesygn.com

LX_COM33_TheLook_TheReport.indd 142

▲ CENTRAL STATION With space at a premium in Brooklyn, designer Jenny Dina Kirschner added a petite “study” by backing a desk against the living room sofa. Behind, modular shelving reads as design statement while discreetly housing a printer and a variety of homework and office supplies. jdkinteriors.com

AS TOLD TO GRACE BEULEY HUNT

From the very beginning, it was meant to be a place of rest. The architect picked the location for it’s amazing natural light and we worked with a feng shui master. Building started in September to encourage good luck and prosperity for the home. It was a special brief in that way—there was meaning behind every detail. We’re seeing more and more clients asking for specialty rooms, but these clients—two firstgeneration Chinese sisters—really use this space. After a hard day’s work, they retreat to drink tea together, practice calligraphy and meditate. They wanted to honor their heritage—but to modernize, too. Tea room window treatments are traditionally bamboo; we chose a light grass Conrad shade. The Chilewich rug is textured like a tatami mat and the white-oak furnishings are custom by Chi Wing Lo, a Chinese furniture designer living in Italy. The table has natural stone for water draining and a metal plate for the hot teapot to rest on. In spring, the sisters drink Longjing tea. In summer, jasmine tea paired with red bean pastry. In autumn, black tea with moon cake and in winter, Pu’er tea. They have an incredible collection of ceramic vessels; their most-prized is a Gongfu tea set from Yingge, a town famous for its production of porcelain. It was an inspiring project in that we learned so much from our clients. It also showed us how important it is to have a room dedicated to feeling good in—to feeling happy. We’re now looking to incorporate this principal into more of our designs. sullivandesignstudio.com

At Salvage Works, American craftsmanship is always in the works. The reclaimed-wood company has evolved to become a one-of-a-kind shop, specializing in a curated selection of heritage lumber, salvaged slab, distinct wall cladding and custom furniture. “Our WOW wall cladding provides warmth and character to Pacific Northwest contemporary homes,” owner Preston Browning says. “And our custom furniture carries the story of where the wood came from, giving clients a connection to the history of the piece.” Its locally sourced materials, like wood from an 1890 homestead barn, for example, bring authentic character to an otherwise contemporary, luxury design. “Holding these stories close, in a quickly changing environment, provides an anchor in uncertain times,” he says. “That, along with old-world craftsmanship, provides a continuity of narrative that follows for generations.”

“ A commissioned piece from Salvage Works not only preserves a piece of PNW history, but ensures the continuation of skilled American craftsmanship.”

LX_PNW55_SS_MAM_SalvageWorks_mp.indd 1

HYPER LOCAL Salvage Works has always been hyper local, sourcing all of its materials from the Pacific Northwest. “All of our furniture is made here in our shop,” Browning says. “‘Made in America’ is what we are; more accurately, we are ‘made in Portland, Oregon.’” The Salvage Works team also collaborates with local artisans whenever possible, like MC Lemay, a very talented and creative metalsmith who builds the company’s bases. “She fabricates high-quality metal creations that match our wood perfectly, both in functionality and beauty,” he says.

SALVAGING THE AMERICAN DREAM “I hope the American Dream will mean we all live in a country where everyone is treated equally, where we value and protect the environment, where buying something long lasting is more important than having the trendy thing, and where Americans support their neighbors by buying locally made goods,” Browning says. “We practice these values at Salvage Works every day. Our customers see that commitment and choose to shop here to honor those same principles.”

SOUS VIDE FOR THE SENSES

EXPLORE THE METHOD BEHIND CHEF-MADE MAGIC

Imagine the smell of a cut of steak that has retained its seasonings like never before; the taste and texture of each slice you bite into, its juices and flavor just as you prefer. A feast for the senses, if ever there was one. This could be your dinner, every evening. Allow us to introduce you to sous vide … the term is French for “under vacuum” and the technique is revolutionary. Vacuum seal your food—spices, marinades and all—and submerge it to cook in water. You can regulate the temperature to within a single degree and the heat will be evenly distributed from start to finish. The result, whether steak or fish, an egg or vegetables, redefines “perfectly cooked.” It used to be that maintaining the condition of the water demanded complexity, with equipment and processes that weren’t suited to the home. But no more. Thanks to Signature Kitchen Suite, this method is now yours to experience on the daily. Bathe your steak to its best quality ever, and then give it a little charring on the cooktop— all using one, first-of-its-kind range. Everything you need is right on your cooktop, with no extra tools or equipment required.

GUIDE TO THE GRAZING BOARD

Ah, the grazing board. It can be an after-school snack plate, elegant party hors d’oeuvre or individual meal. Delicious and aesthetically pleasing, this display of abundance is perfect for foodies of any age and in every setting. It’s a culinary staple. Given the nature of its ingredients, a grazing board demands a lot from one’s refrigerator. Meats should be quite a bit chillier than fruits and veggies, for example, and most of it can’t sit out for too long once you’ve put your spread together. Signature Kitchen Suite’s 24-inch and 30-inch Integrated Column Refrigerators prove the ultimate partner. Find your canvas. We think wood boards make for beautiful backgrounds, but any traylike surface will do.

Decide on your must-haves. What are your favorite cheeses? Are you obsessed with olives? Or is red pepper jelly your jam (pun intended)?

Start pairing. Choose more foods with your first picks in mind and be intuitive about it. Just because something isn’t a conventional match, doesn’t mean you can’t include it. Trust your gut, as they say.

Slice, dice + roll! Get creative with presentation; think brie triangles and cheddar chunks, pepperoni chips and rolled prosciutto.

Top it off with extra flavor. Nestle dipping bowls into spaces around the board and fill them with yummy condiments (this can also be a great place for items that give off liquid you want to contain, like olives and pickles).

Courtyards of crushed gravel and Texas limestone capture the warmth of the afternoon light through the foliage of mature live oak and Redwood trees, while lush play lawns and a swimming pool activate this Atherton, California, abode’s outdoor living areas.

To combat the existing steep topography, a multilevel series of terraces and parterres was created outside of this 1928 Bronxville, New York, dwelling to unite each façade with the ground plane.

With landscape architect Jean Mus having transformed the exterior of this Texas home into a Tuscan-style garden, the interior designer carried that theme into the design of other parts of the outdoor area, including the veranda and a courtyard, complete with lush greenery.

Drawing inspiration from English garden rooms, the grounds of this Wakefield, Rhode Island, residence were divided into an entry court, a terrace with fire feature, a woodland garden, a dining terrace, a formal garden, two fencing pavilions and a sweeping lawn. Outside of a Dallas domicile, the precise, modern lines of site walls, water features and retaining walls are all softened by the calculated addition of large trees and textural plantings.

KITCHEN + BATH PACIFIC NORTHWEST

The fine art of function and finesse plays out in today’s kitchens and baths. Whether updating or building new, industry experts put entertaining and unwinding at the center of every design. Leaning into the way clients live, technology and low-maintenance materials enhance convenience in the kitchen and relaxation in the bath. Natural details grace most designs, elevated by metal finishes and surprising new colors. And integration is all the rage, with undercounter, built-in and handle-less options. Everywhere you look, inspiration abounds. Turn the page to see for yourself.

Caliber: Caliber’s stainless steel or RAL custom color with brass or other metal accents with a hardwood handle is a popular customization option. Cavavin: While stainless steel continues to be popular in Cavavin’s portfolio, they designed a product specifically for the use of black and white glass, and other glossy surfaces. Its sleek and handleless Black Glass Vinoa wine cellars offer a modern take on this trend.

There’s no better way to elevate culinary living than with appliances that deliver the height of luxury. Enter, Caliber Appliances and Cavavin—both innovators of design whose range, rangetops and wine storage products deliver top-of-the-line performance, customization and results. Take Caliber’s patent-pending CR6 Top Burner that allows the user to sear, sauté or boil while preparing a feast. “We have designed our products not just for restaurant-grade power and efficiency, but for flexibility and versatility,” says Caliber president/CEO Randy Rummel. Likewise, Cavavin’s Vinoa Series of wine cellars and beverage centers speaks to its expertise, with sharp lines and energy-efficient designs. “The Vinoa Series is a great mix of value, aesthetics and performance,” says Cavavin president Nathalie Fortier. Both brands are available at Albert Lee Appliance.

“Choose beautiful appliances you want to gather around, and create spaces that complement your lifestyle.”

HI-TECH TOUCHES EVERYWHERE Technology touches every space we occupy. In kitchens, the smart refrigerator is the newest and greatest. These Wi-Fi-enabled refrigerators notify you when you’re out of milk, eggs or when the filter needs to be replaced. Speed ovens, like Monogram’s Advantium, are the most practical new technology. They can replace a microwave/ toaster oven, warming drawer and extra oven … which also helps with countertop clutter.

The design genesis can come from a variety of inspirations. For Patricia Julber, owner of and designer at Complements Home Interiors, one bold pattern or color often sparks an idea, culminating in a theme she carries throughout. “That boldness will help dictate what we do with everything, from lighting to cabinet hardware,” she says. “The balance comes with replicating a few elements to create harmony in the space.” Making sure the space is as functional as it is beautiful also informs her approach, especially in the kitchen and bath, where she incorporates not just a state-of-the-art tile design but the latest technologies. “In a kitchen, that may mean using a speed oven to eliminate a few appliances,” she says. “In bathrooms, it may mean using Wi-Fi-enabled floor heating.” In both cases, it means discerning what clients want on an intrinsic level.

LIVE + IN PERSON: THE EASTBANK DIFFERENCE Eastbank Contractor Appliances prides itself on providing a warm, inviting atmosphere, offering coffee, sparkling water, sodas, even beer or wine. “There is no hard close,” the team says. “Many times, we tell customers they aren’t quite ready to order until they check a few details with their builder or designer. It’s more important that they thoroughly understand their appliance choices to make the best selection.” To assist the selection process, the Eastbank team delves deeply into how a product is built, including factory visits around the globe. Next, they install the most impressive products with live showroom demonstrations. “We all do a lot of cooking in the showroom to see for ourselves how products actually perform,” they say. “This allows us to make the best recommendations to meet particular needs.”

When considering appliance showrooms, it’s difficult to know what sets one apart from the other. At Eastbank Contractor Appliances, it’s all about the approach … and its customers clearly appreciate the difference. For co-owners Tom Dinsdale, Derek Berg, Rob Kemp, Jackie Paul and Thom Feller—who worked together many years in the Portland appliance market—it all began with one question: “What if we were allowed to qualify and educate our customers to help them choose the best appliances without any limitations?” In 2012, they responded, opening Eastbank Contractor Appliances. Working with high-end builders, remodelers and the public, the Eastbank team embraces every moment afforded to share their knowledge on which brands deliver the best in quality and performance. “Our story is that we care about our customers before and after the sale,” they say.

“We specialize in presenting highquality, proven kitchen appliances to our clients.”

FROM KITCHEN TO BATH, YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT … Whether a spa lover or parents of young children; a gourmet chef or takeout lover, Thomas says everyone needs a tub with a view in the bath and a quality range in the kitchen. “Relaxing in the bathtub goes back centuries, so designing a space to take advantage of the natural elements around this takes any master bath to the next level,” he says. “And the range is the most versatile appliance in the kitchen, serving up every need, from warming up takeout to cooking a Michelin star meal. Picking the right one that fits the client’s lifestyle is crucial in making the kitchen a functional area they will love to come home to and use time and time again.”

Whether tearing down walls or switching out countertops, lighting or paint, James Frank Construction draws from 60 years of experience to design and build dream kitchens and baths to spec. Master cabinetmaker James Frank founded the third-generation, family-owned business in 1955, quickly making a name for himself in Portland’s growing community of architectural professionals for his commitment to beauty and precision. With the endorsement of his peers behind him, he gained experience in general contracting and eventually established James Frank Construction. Today, vice president Thomas Frank leads the company, citing client involvement as key to its success. “We recently completed a kitchen remodel for a left-handed client, thoughtfully placing the appliances and the design to ensure everything was convenient for their cooking lifestyle,” Thomas says.

“Spaces look best when there is a blend of a natural palette of stone and wood that complements form and function.”

Custom modern design for the art of living—words that so perfectly embody the partnership between Leicht and YS BUILT. Leicht, the largest custom cabinet maker in Germany, and YS BUILT, the pioneer of modern sustainable housing, are united by their shared enthusiasm for modern craftsmanship and all things authentic. Together, they are LEICHT SEATTLE, the Pacific Northwest’s purveyor of Leicht’s premium line of modern kitchen cabinetry, in addition to casework for bathrooms, closets and more. Drawing from the company’s “Rethink Your Kitchen” motto, manager Yuval Sofer and his team create high-functioning spaces with an amazing user experience that improves over time. “Custom design is about enhancing our clients’ lifestyle,” he says, whether updating with Buster + Punch hardware, a Flos light fixture, or Leicht’s MODO kitchen organization system.

“ We are developing the new lifestyle—sustainable, minimalistic, subdued, conscious of tradition, yet future-oriented.”

LEICHT SEATTLE is very excited to design with new hues of blue and soft reds. We have licensed a series of midcentury modern colors from Le Corbusier (the Swiss-French architect, designer, painter, urban planner, writer and one of the pioneers of modern architecture) that provide amazing colors we can integrate into lacquer and glass. The resulting designs create an emotionally engaging experience, and enhance the ambience. We are also very excited to work with WallPepper from Italy, whose eye-catching range of art and color on advanced wallpaper materials (some waterproof or acoustic) we use in bathrooms, on the kitchen backsplash and in the living room.

When it comes to kitchen and bath design, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. For some, a favorite material might dictate the direction. In other cases, a specific request may be the starting point, like a home chef who needs two large islands to accommodate their love of baking. “We deliver a bespoke experience,” says Joelle Nesen, president and principal of Maison, Inc. “We strive to get to know the person and type of lifestyle they lead and gear the experience toward that.” Established in 2001, Maison, Inc. is a full-service luxury interior design studio, lauded for its sophisticated, intuitive approach, technical expertise and insight. For the kitchen and bath, Nesen cites these two mainstays of design: the best refrigerator one can afford and heated bathroom floors. “It’s all about capability and comfort,” she says.

“ We deliver experiences beyond expectation through a tailored mix of classic design, modern style and a dash of whimsy.”

In Nesen’s opinion, the No. 1 item to invest in is quality plumbing. “You can do inexpensive tile or stone, but you will never regret spending money on plumbing,” she says. “It’s significantly more durable, a daily pleasure to use, and more economical in the long run.”

Italian cabinet manufacturer Pedini is the perfect example of how to achieve global success, starting in 1957 as a small, family-owned Italian business and growing to over 300 showrooms worldwide. With an emphasis on high-end design and cutting-edge Italian style, Pedini cabinetry has found a home in U.S. kitchens throughout the Northwest, at Pedini PDX in Oregon and Pedini Seattle in Washington. “Our clients like to warm the ultramodern aesthetic with natural materials or matte finishes,” says Victoria Faragalli, owner/designer of Pedini PDX. She, and Pedini Seattle owner Paul Nadolny both agree that listening to clients is No. 1 when approaching any project, whether that means adding a table off an island for the avid entertainer or motorized cabinet doors for more convenience. “The little ways you improve clients’ daily lives through design is what it’s all about,” Nadolny says.

“ Pedini’s formula for success is function plus beauty equals great design.”

As a full-service firm that represents two superb cabinet companies, Six Walls Interior Design is more than equipped to pursue kitchen and bath dreams. And that they do. “It all begins with finding the client a designer with whom they will click and have great dialogue,” says Dawn Wilkinson, Six Walls’ CEO and founder. One such designer is Emily Doden, who continues, “We listen carefully to the client to understand how they live and function in their home, but also to capture the things they might not be able to verbalize.” Customization is, unsurprisingly, a tenet of the Six Walls philosophy. Still, some elements of style are evident in the firm’s portfolio. “Our signature is to create a sophisticated base of neutral, timeless colors that is then complemented by stronger colors, patterns and bold structures,” Wilkinson shares. “We like unusual marbling, raw and earthy tiles, and brass finishes.”

“ We create personal and beautiful spaces that are warm, inviting and highly functional.”

HARDWARE HACKS: REPLACING MADE EASY 1. If you already have pulls on your cabinets, there will be two screw holes already. Measure the distance between the two holes (the centerto-center measurement), then choose new hardware with the same center-to-center as the existing holes. 2. If you currently have knobs, use the one existing screw hole as the top or bottom hole, then drill another hole to add pulls. Pulls can add new life to existing cabinetry. 3. Mount pulls on cabinet doors horizontally, or combine horizontally and vertically mounted pulls to add visual interest. 4. If you currently have a single knob on a drawer front, replace those knobs with cup pulls, like Sumner’s Ovaline cup pull. This is so easy and can dramatically change the look of your drawers.

Hardware is often seen as a favorite necklace or pair of cuff links. “It’s the accessory that can bring a kitchen or bath to life, or remain more understated and utilitarian,” says Sean Foley, president of Sumner Street Home Hardware. Ultimately, hardware reflects the eye of its beholder. At Sumner Street, it becomes thoughtfully designed, beautifully crafted pulls, knobs, hooks and more. Expanding on its parent company Continental Hardware’s 50-plus years in decorative furniture hardware, Sumner Street offers a high-quality cabinet hardware for the home. Staying true to the founding principles of design, development and mindful manufacturing, Sumner Street remains nimble in the market, bringing new collections to customers looking to create synergy in their home or shake things up. “Don’t be afraid to use hardware, finishes and styles to express your personality,” Foley says.

“ You’ll be touching your hardware every day, so choose cabinet hardware that looks good, but also feels good in hand.”

There’s one thing Brittainy Tiffany and the team at Tiffany Home Design do in every project. “We create an experience,” she says. “We all lead hectic lives, regardless of what that looks like. To be able to come home and have a spalike feeling in your bath or an organized place to gather in the kitchen is extremely important.” To create that “experience,” owner and president Tiffany looks to her clients’ wants and needs, now and in the future, to create a timeless design plan. Technology plays an ever-growing role in achieving this, as more clients look to simplify their environment and how they access and control it from outside their home. “We are installing heated floors in bathrooms and even kitchens,” she says. “Once clients have them installed, they never want to go without. Also, appliances with smart technology are a must-have.”

IN FULL COLOR We’re definitely entering an era of color. For the last two years, we’ve started seeing every hue of blue, but the future will prove even more colorful with the entrée of deep jewel tones, among others. We’re also seeing a jungle trend emerge, so we’re excited to see how this will be expressed in the different aspects of interior design.

Looking at Z Collection’s trajectory, it appears tenacity pays off. Founded in 2012, the marble mosaic company went from tile manufacturer to taking creative control of its materials and bringing them to market themselves. In 2016, Z Collection launched the Stone Essentials collection and added porcelain and ceramic tile lines from leading factories in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Japan the following year. In 2018, the company expanded its stone selections with the Gen Z collection, a line that reflects the current era by bringing unique, exclusive geometric patterns to the traditional world of marble mosaics. “We’ve gained a lot of momentum from the last few years of growth,” says founder and CEO Zee Coleman. “Our ultimate goal is to become the most sought-after, high-end custom tile brand in the country.” By all accounts, they are well on their way.

“At the core, our company is a team of creative, funloving people who thrive on creating memorable experiences for our customers and ourselves.”

eattle’s View Ridge neighborhood is known for its bird’s-eye views of nearby Lake Washington and the Cascades beyond, and an impressive stock of midcentury-modern homes, many by notable Pacific Northwest architects. But until recently, this particular home in the heart of View Ridge had neither the architecture nor views of note, thanks to a series of haphazard renovations that ignored aesthetics, functionality and the picturesque surroundings. For seven years, the homeowners and their architect, Joseph Herrin, had searched for a site on which to build a new house. “But nothing was ever really right,” Herrin says, “and in the end, it was because they loved their neighborhood and didn’t want to move.” But while the owners weren’t leaving, their existing house would have to, so Herrin, project architect Tony Salas and their team set about devising a new structure that would celebrate the views and their clients’ passion for contemporary design. To do that, Herrin decided they had to start at the top. “We wanted to make sure that no matter what happened— even if the neighbor across the street decided to build a three-story house—we would have that view in perpetuity,” he says. “So, we created a reverse floor plan with the living spaces on the top floor, the bedrooms on the middle floor, and the garage and utility spaces on the lower floor,” with the first two levels both situated at grade to take advantage of the sloping site. When viewed from the street, the new house would be three stories tall, and Herrin worried that a towering structure might not be the friendliest neighbor. To break down the scale, he and his team envisioned a stack of three boxes that shift horizontally as they ascended. The first is a heavy base with concrete walls; above it rests what the architect describes as a wood box clad with clear cedar; and the top floor, sheltered by a cantilevered roof, “is expressed as much as possible as a hovering horizontal plane.” The journey to reach the living, dining and kitchen spaces is a revelation. Herrin worked with the project’s general contractor, Chad Rollins, whose firm has an in-house architectural concrete, framing, cabinetry and metalworking shop, to create a series of concrete entry stairs outside— shaded by a mature fig tree and accented by a modern steel guard rail and archway—and a dramatic staircase inside. “Like so many of the home’s details that look really simple, there was a party going on behind the scenes,” Rollins says of the latter, whose oak treads appear to float in midair. “Each tread is a U-shaped configuration that’s slipped over the top of a steel angle hidden in the wall, then capped from the bottom with wood.”

If the stairs are the teaser to entice visitors upstairs, the top floor is the payoff, and not just because of its lake, mountain and treetop views. Here, the home’s palette of glass, steel and wood merges in living spaces that feel at once airy and intimate, thanks to wide window walls, warm oak floors and angled ceilings clad with clear cedar. “It’s a very classic Northwest look,” Herrin says, “though we like to take a natural material like cedar and desaturate it with a light stain, so it’s a little quieter, so your eye is drawn to the furnishings and art.” In this case, those furnishings are simple and streamlined. Some, like the family room’s sofas, made the cut from the previous house, while others, like the sculptural armchairs that pull up to the fireplace, were chosen for this space. And a few, to Herrin’s delight, were built right in. To save space in the main bedroom, Rollins’ team fabricated a solid walnut bed frame and headboard wall with built-in cantilevered nightstands that float above the floor. For the bathrooms, they turned sleek expanses of rift-sawn white oak into cantilevered vanities. And in the kitchen, they used the same material in two contrasting finish colors to build streamlined walls of cabinetry and an island encased in jetblack granite. Driving each of these custom details was the common goal of creating deceptively simple design elements that come together in quiet harmony. “Our work is about riffing off one another to make sure that these details come to life while retaining the subtle moments that everybody hopes for,” Rollins says, all in service of one not-so-subtle feature—those dynamic, iconic Pacific Northwest views.

“WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENED THE CLIENTS WOULD HAVE THAT VIEW IN PERPETUITY.” –JOSEPH HERRIN luxesource.com / 237

The team “future-proofed” the home “by putting in an elevator shaft so it’s ready if and when the homeowners need it,” Herrin says. Until then, they use a three-story staircase with white-oak treads that wraps around the shaft and appears to float in midair thanks to some clever engineering.

efore a remodel, the first emotion that visitors experienced stepping through the front gate and into the courtyard of this Seattle home was confusion. They were greeted by a fortress-like exterior wall and a nearly hidden front door that, according to designer Christie Grove, had the appeal of a utility closet entrance. “For a home of this caliber and size, the door had very little presence or style,” she notes. To reach it, one had to stroll past a row of French doors fronting the dining room and kitchen, and thus it was not uncommon for delivery drivers or guests to pop into the cooking area while the owners were preparing a meal. “Since it wasn’t clear where to enter, they went to the first place where they saw people,” Grove explains. That wasn’t the only source of bewilderment. According to architect John Adams, the 1950s-era house had been home to many, and the string of previous owners had left their marks. “There were several remodels, and they were not always in harmony,” says Adams, who worked on the project with his wife and partner, Anne. “Over the years it had become a mishmash of different styles that didn’t look as if they belonged together.” Grove and the Adamses, along with landscape architect Ken Philp and general contractor Billy Stauffer, set out to unify the home—and no better place to start than the entrance. The imposing wall that greeted guests in the courtyard held two windows. “One of them illuminated a hallway, and we thought it would make a natural entry point,” says the designer. Because there was also a light well directly beneath the window, the idea of turning it into a door would seem to be a nonstarter. But that’s the difference between mere mortals and design pros: The latter can spot the likely in the unlikely.

“WE COMBINED TRADITIONAL AND MODERN STYLES FOR A FRESH, UNIFIED AESTHETIC.” –CHRISTIE GROVE

LX_PNW55_HOM_Adams_10.indd 248

“We had the idea to build a bridge over the light well that would lead to the new front door,” explains John Adams. “The clients had never considered that, and agreeing to it was a leap of faith on their part. But when the window became an oversize steel-and-glass door and the hallway became the entry, a logical flow to the house emerged.” Stauffer helped refine the entry sequence and improve the home’s curb appeal with a board-formed concrete wall that defines the courtyard. An integrally colored gray concrete path that traverses the middle of the outdoor space guides visitors to the new entrance and away from the span of French doors. Philp layered plantings, including Hebe sutherlandii and Corsican mint, in front of them to add privacy. Inside, reports Grove, “The overall vibe was heavy and had no architectural conviction. We wanted to make things light, bright and contemporary.” To that end, the entry, dining room, bar and family room gained more windows, and larger steel-framed models with low-profile frames and mullions replaced most of the existing glazing. Based on a bit of the original molding, the team designed a new trim package for the house that promoted a sense of amity between the rooms. The color scheme—predominantly creamy white and shades of blue—is inspired by the client’s collection of Imari porcelain, something she brought to the project and the designer, who began the endeavor while working at Susan Young Interiors, helped her expand. The colors are seen in the soft white of the walls, the delicate patterns in the carpets and the bolder designs of select upholstered pieces, such as the zebra-print X-frame benches in the entry and the modern wingback chair in the family room. The porcelain collection has pride of place in the living room, where Grove designed two sets of lighted display shelves on either side of the fireplace expressly for them. Earlier renovations had resulted in a very long living room. “Its scale made it impossible to furnish as one space—it’s 30 feet long,” Grove notes. The solution was to create multiple seating areas within. A custom-designed chaise delineates a cozy gathering spot near the fireplace from one closer to the dining room. “When designing these spaces, I could imagine people assembling in the seating area by the dining room after a meal to relax with a drink, or in the area by the fireplace to enjoy someone playing the piano,” says Grove. And that’s the idea at the heart of this home: Peaceful transitions between warm and welcoming spaces. “We had a wonderful team, and together we were able to change the whole dynamic of this house, inside and out,” says Philp. “It now has the feeling of a calm and beautiful oasis in the city.”

The renovation of this Seattle home was all about balancing light and dark, so designer Anna Thomassen gave the living room an airy vibe to simplify the background for the furniture. The sofa, armchairs and coffee table are Anthropologie; the custom cabinets are from the clients’ previous home. Thomassen turned to Arteriors for the teardrop sconces and to Circa Lighting for the chandelier. The photograph is by Kate Schermerhorn.

ome renovations often take surprising turns, but for one Seattle family, theirs was a bit more than that. They had been working with architect Alix Day on a remodel of their Capitol Hill home. “At a meeting, the wife said, ‘Let’s go for a walk,’ and she took me to a house a block and a half away,” recalls Day. “She said, ‘We bought it this weekend!’ I thought I’d been fired.” That was anything but the case. Instead, the owners leaned into Day’s talent, trusting her to implement a design for the new home within four weeks. Day, in turn, relied on general contractor Dalen Bakstad and designer Anna Thomassen to help make it happen. “It was a fascinating, collaborative project, as if we could read each other’s minds,” she says. Bakstad, who has been remodeling older homes for decades, came to the project well aware of the needs of houses like this one, built in 1909. “Back then you’d hire a builder, and he’d come in with his touch-inlaid floors, heads of doors and crown moldings. Old homes have a special quality, and there’s a story to tell, but the question is: How can you create your own story?” That challenge became the crux of the project. “We knew that together we could interpret the owners’ wishes and keep the history of the house intact,” says Thomassen. “I think the intent was to give more interesting textures and organic lines to the historic Craftsman palette.” The first major decision was how to handle all of the woodwork. “It was dark, which the husband loved, but the wife wanted bright and airy,” explains Day. To bridge their preferences, she and Thomassen went room by room, formulating a plan. “We wanted to emphasize the wood where we could, but it had to be about balance.” The entry and living room were painted “a soft white to minimize wood tones,” says the designer, who was working with the couple’s existing furnishings, including custom maple cabinets, and she kept the color scheme neutral while borrowing “atmospheric blues” from a painting by local artist David Price.

LX_PNW55_HOM_Day_10.indd 260

8/10/20 6:10 PM

In the adjacent dining room, they left the millwork untouched. “The ceiling is an explosion of strong geometric angles, so we wanted to bring an organic feel to it with wallpaper,” says Thomassen, pointing to the beams and coffers above. “We tried an English floral, but it was too dark. When we held up this one, it was like there was music in the room. It’s masculine—charcoal and bronze, with dashes of blue and chartreuse—but whimsical at the same time.” The pattern also feels slightly Japanese in design, an aesthetic the homeowners who lived in Asia for a time, especially like. The second major design decision was how to arrange the bedrooms, which were all located on the second floor, though there wasn’t a true main bedroom. Reconfiguring things, the architect left the second floor to the children and guests, and the attic level became the main suite. There, she placed black steel collar ties to vault the ceiling. “We loved the idea of maximizing the height, exposing the structure in a minimal way, and then adding a light that had a cloud-like feel,” says Day. “From their window, they have this gorgeous view of the treetops in the surrounding neighborhood and Lake Washington.” Thomassen took it a step further by letting an antiqueinspired French bed be the sole focus of the room,

though she did create a moody moment in the bathroom’s vestibule by papering it with the same pattern as in the dining room. “This house is big and called for texture and human scale, so I used more wallpaper than I’ve done before,” Thomassen shares. And she wasn’t afraid to mix eras. With William Morris’s classic Pimpernel in one bedroom and a David Hicks hexagonal pattern in a bathroom, she has spanned nearly a century of design. To bring things into a more human scale, she chose biomorphic lighting fixtures that lower the ceilings without lessening the home’s innate grandness. It’s a thoughtfulness that permeates the entire home; to wit, the meditation space for the husband. “That was a cool challenge,” says Bakstad. “We took building it out seriously. If someone was having a bad day, I didn’t want them working on it. I wanted to keep the energy clean.” Outside, too, is now tailored to the family with a design by Ryan Sarvis of Green Spaces that provides entertaining space, a grassy area for badminton and raised vegetable beds. “The rooms are different, but the house feels pulled together now. Shapes and textures throughout the house look and feel right,” says Day. “This was a dream home— the owners couldn’t pass it up.”

The brass details of the Visual Comfort & Co. pendants are picked up by the Rejuvenation cabinet hardware and by the California Faucets taps from Seattle Interiors. On the backsplash is Ann Sacks tile. Albert Lee supplied the Viking range, Sub-Zero refrigerator and Miele dishwasher.
