Standing beside artist Will Ryman’s towering LongHouse 6 sculpture at LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton.

Full Bloom

Pamela Jaccarino VP, Editor in Chief @pamelajaccarino

LUXESOURCE.COM

photo: lena yaremenko.

This past summer, I had the pleasure of visiting LongHouse Reserve, a 16-acre reserve and sculpture garden in East Hampton founded by the brilliant textile designer, Jack Lenor Larsen. Amongst the more than 60 contemporary sculptures, I was particularly taken with artist Will Ryman’s colossal, and fanciful LongHouse 6, an improbable, exaggerated 24-foot-tall cluster of six roses and fallen petals rendered in stainless steel, resin and painted in cadmium red light. The rose remains an idealized symbol for romance, natural beauty and perfection. Yet, Ryman designed his petals with bumps and irregularities. You can clearly detect its hand-worked quality, and his hint to embrace fading beauty, ephemera and the temporary nature of all things. As we forge ahead into the end of another “strange” year for the world, I hope that you will seek out and embrace beauty in all its forms. For artistry and design will always be in bloom, one way or another.

Health, Wellness, Sustainability, Innovation MAKING IT EASIER FOR PEOPLE TO LIVE HAPPIER, HEALTHIER LIVES. The kitchen has long been known as the heart of the home. Perhaps that is because it keeps the home, and all who live within it, nourished. And perhaps the appliances central to its design have a far nobler purpose than merely storing, cooking and cleaning. That is certainly what Beko believes. The brand feels that the perfect appliance can empower people to lead healthier lives, while technological advancements—like the use of recycled materials and carbon-neutral manufacturing—help the planet to be healthier, too. The Beko

team is deeply committed to technologies that perform at the lowest levels of energy with the smallest impact on the earth’s resources, because of its overriding belief that you can’t lead a healthy life without a healthy planet. In business for more than 66 years, with products sold in 140 countries, 28 production facilities and 40,000 employees globally, Beko has been a household name in Europe for many years. But recently, the brand has expanded into the United States, bringing its commitment to health and wellness to even more homes.

Preserve Your Produce, Preserve the Planet Imagine keeping your fruits and veggies fresh for up to 30 days, reducing trips to the store and pressure on your grocery budget. Best of all, with less food going bad and ending up in a landfill, it benefits Mother Earth as well. It almost sounds too good to be true, but Beko’s EverFresh+® food-preservation system does just that. Here’s how: • A series of crispers use breathable smart materials and other advances to maximize humidity and minimize moisture loss. • Active Fresh Blue Light™ recreates photosynthesis conditions to preserve the vitamin C in produce, which keeps it tasting its best. • An energy-saving ProSmart™ inverter compressor helps maintain vibrancy and nutritional qualities. • In keeping with Beko’s pledge to make wellness attainable for all, the EverFresh+® system is available throughout the line of Beko refrigerators, not just the top-end models.

THE INSIDER MAX HUMPHREY

2021 marked a year of firsts for Max Humphrey. The Portland-based musician-turneddesigner just released his first book, Modern Americana, featuring projects from the East to the West Coasts, and is launching his debut line of soft goods in collaboration with Hartmann&Forbes (see samples of these textiles on page 142). Here, Humphrey shares more of his DIY attitude and down-home approach. maxhumphrey.com Tell us about your new book. The biggest milestone in my stylistic evolution was figuring out a name for it. “Modern Americana” popped into my head a few years back, and I liked it so

much I used it as the title. The book is arranged by Americana design elements: old maps, subway tile, flags, painted furniture and gingham. What was it like to design your own line? I’ve done a lot of DIY soft goods projects, but it was exciting to see my ideas translated to woven window coverings. The collection is inspired by memories of growing up in New England but through the lens of the Northwest. All of my work is nostalgia-driven— I’m always trying to go back home. What do you hope people take away from your work? I hope my work inspires people to collect. I’m always on the hunt for something: patchwork quilts, brass horse sculptures, nautical charts, camp lanterns, you name it. Located in the bustling South Lake Union neighborhood, just steps from the Atomic Age Space Needle, the Civic Hotel first opened as a roadside motel in 1962 for the Seattle World’s Fair. An updated design by local firm Wittman Estes brings the property’s midcentury modern charm squarely into the present day. “The building had clean lines and strong bones—it captured that midcentury spirit of futuristic optimism,” says Wittman Estes principal Matt Wittman. “Our design concept centers on arrival and departure, conjuring a 1960s sexiness and verve around jet travel.” Besides updating the 52 guestrooms with custom plywood furniture, Wittman opened up the lobby and central stair (right), connecting to a new city-facing terrace. Capping it all is a retro neon sign that sets the Civic Hotel apart from the humdrum contemporary skyscrapers springing up around it. “We were thinking outwardly to connect the hotel with the neighborhood,” says Wittman. “It nods to history, but ultimately the design is about the city we live in today.” civicseattle.com

IMOGEN CUNNINGHAM: A RETROSPECTIVE

This winter, the Seattle Art Museum debuts the first major U.S. retrospective of photographer Imogen Cunningham’s work in over 35 years. Organized by L.A.’s J. Paul Getty Museum, the exhibit brings Cunningham home to her native Pacific Northwest—she was born in Portland and attended the University of Washington before establishing her first photography studio in Seattle. Best known for her sensuous flower studies, Cunningham’s pioneering contribution to 20th-century photography runs much deeper, evidenced by the nearly 200 works from her 70-year career on display. Included are portraits of Hollywood stars, gritty street photography and startlingly modern nudes. “As a woman artist on the cutting edge of her field, Cunningham’s story is an important one to tell,” says Carrie Dedon, SAM’s Assistant Curator of Modern & Contemporary Art. “She undertook artistic collaborations with Ruth Asawa and Martha Graham, and I hope viewers leave not only with an understanding of Cunningham’s innovation and experimentation, but also her collaborative and charismatic spirit.” The retrospective runs from November 18 to February 6. seattleartmuseum.org

CELLAR NOTES Celebrated Washington vintner Browne Family Vineyards recently opened an outpost in Tacoma’s charming, treelined Proctor District, with a tasting room envisioned by Seattle-based designer Heidi Caillier (left). She discusses the space’s nostalgic, richly layered interiors. brownefamilyvineyards.com/ visit/tacoma What was the overarching concept? I designed owner William Bitner Browne’s family house in Ohio, so we wanted the tasting room to feel like a reflection of that home. We used the same stone for the tasting room fireplace that we used in their home and some of the same textiles. We gravitated away from anything that felt commercial, keeping things soft with fabric and pattern. Tell us about the room’s distinctive mural. I wanted to do a scenic mural on the back bar (above) telling the story of William’s grandfather Bitner Browne, who is the inspiration behind the brand. Artist Melanie Nead and I were able to read actual letters that Bitner wrote to his wife while he was in the war. We were extremely touched and wanted to bring the story to life through Melanie’s artistry. What do you hope visitors experience? I hope that everyone instantly feels comfortable and at home, and that they can feel the love this family has for the company and for one another.

Well & Good

“Most of us spend 90 percent of our lives indoors, and two-thirds of that is in our homes,” says designer Tamara Magel. “Yet very few of us consider the impact on our well-being.” It’s a staggering and pertinent statistic that has inspired Magel and others to make wellness a cornerstone of their design philosophies: How can we build a house that not only looks good but also creates a sense of peace, beauty, security and comfort? For Magel, this started with adopting a 10-step healthy living approach. “A truly healthy home goes beyond clean materials; it incorporates our basic human needs for light, clean air and food, a quiet environment and a peaceful atmosphere,” she explains. In her work, this translates to non-toxic and eco-friendly paints, natural stone and elements (water, clay and grasses), natural

light sources and feng shui. “I tend to use less furniture and larger pieces to create ease of flow from room to room,” she says. “I start with symmetry and add strategically placed organic curves.” Symmetry is also key for architect Don Ruggles, an idea he explores in his book Beauty, Neuroscience & Architecture, where he maintains that the most fundamental geometric pattern is the three-point facial pattern—two eyes and a mouth. What may seem like an abstract concept for the home is actually quite relevant: “The three-bythree pattern occurs over and over again in architecture and art,” says Ruggles. “Your brain will intuitively process it in an efficient way, which creates less stress and more rest.” The architect mentions the classic fireplace set up, in which the firebox opening is the center, and the mantel forms the upper left

and upper right of the design. Notice the pattern once, and you’ll see it everywhere: a headboard with two nightstands; the kitchen range and hood framed by cabinets; a front door surround; and so on. In California, architect Jennifer Hoppel is championing beauty and sustainability. With her firm, Burdge Architects, she just completed the first carbon-neutral luxury estate in Malibu, aptly named Zero One. “You don’t have to sacrifice design or luxury to achieve a structure that is good for you and the environment,” she says, noting the residence’s intentional siting, outdoor courtyard, sustainable garden, FSCcertified wood and even its less sexy (but no less important) ventilation system that promotes healthy air. “Being green is not this big, scary endeavor,” says Hoppel. “It’s attainable. It’s the way of the future.”

Past Perfect ARTISTRY AND ANCIENT TECHNIQUES COMBINE TO CREATE FURNITURE THAT STANDS THE TEST OF TIME.

Father-son duo Philip and Kelvin LaVerne often buried their works in special soil, which would age the metal and give it the appearance of antiquity, like the piece shown here.

LUXESOURCE.COM

It’s been more than 30 years since the last piece of furniture left Philip LaVerne Galleries, but the demand for the richly detailed tables, consoles and cabinets has only grown. This wouldn’t surprise their creators, a father-and-son team who knew they were crafting pieces with an enduring appeal even as they made them. Philip LaVerne and his son, Kelvin, were able to use their prodigious artistic gifts to create sculptural bronze and pewter pieces prized by designers and collectors. Their story begins in the late 1800s when Philip’s father, Max, immigrated to Brooklyn from Eastern Europe. “Max was a muralist, and he painted the ceilings of lobbies and churches,” says Evan Lobel, the owner of Lobel Modern NYC and co-author of a forthcoming book about the LaVernes. “When Philip was a child, Max would take him to the library, open an art book and ask his son to copy the images there. From an early age, Philip had a great talent and appreciation for art.” Those skills and inclinations were passed to Kelvin who, after graduating from art school in the 1950s, joined his father in creating one-of-a-kind pieces and selling them in a Midtown Manhattan showroom. The surfaces of their furniture frequently carry vignettes

weeks in soil the artists described as coming from the “Far East,” allowing it to oxidize and develop colors. The LaVernes monitored the process, encouraging hues with chemicals and setting them with wax when they achieved the desired shade. When unearthed, they would freeze or torch surfaces to develop patina or brightness. “The LaVernes were really advanced for their time. Their techniques, which they said were inspired by ancient practices, were never divulged,” says Merrill. “They were essentially painting with bronze and pewter, doing things that aren’t easily copied.” In 1987, Kelvin closed the studio doors and took up photography. But, more than three decades later, the LaVerne legacy continues to grow. According to Darin Geise, owner of Coup D’Etat, the singular nature of the work explains its enduring popularity. “People have a new appreciation for LaVerne pieces, and they are having a moment,” he says. Lobel agrees, noting: “They used to run magazine ads calling their pieces the ‘antiques of the future’—and they were absolutely right.”

Current prices for LaVerne pieces, like the rare Tao Cabinet (below) and a table from their first series focused on historical civilizations (left), bear out the statement. Todd Merrill notes recent auctions that have seen LaVerne works command top dollar. “In early 2000, Sotheby’s sold a Bathers cabinet for $90,000,” he notes. “If you had one today, you could ask whatever you wanted for it.”

LaVerne Everlasting DESIGNERS ON TODAY’S APPEAL OF THESE VINTAGE PIECES. “ At once avant-garde and traditional, a LaVerne work is always a fantastic focal point to any interior. The burnished bronze and verde gris patina adds a touch of deceptive antiquity and the plateaux quietly reveal a bas-relief scene akin to the face of an antique coin.” –JON DE LA CRUZ

“ W hat drew me to their furnishings is that they can work anywhere—either in a traditional or a modern interior. They are just as beautiful in either setting.” –JENNIFER COHLER MASON

“ T he craftsmanship of a LaVerne piece is amazing. Every detail is elegantly articulated and every time you study it, you see something new. You have to wonder, how did they do it?” –JACK LEVY

depicting life in ancient civilizations or scenes from mythology. “They were a very intellectual family,” notes Lobel. “They were interested in history, religion and music. Their designs were inspired by the subjects they loved deeply.” Their top-secret techniques created a look that’s immediately recognizable. Todd Merrill of Todd Merrill Studio describes the process in his book, Modern Americana: Studio Furniture from High Craft to High Glam, as a multistep endeavor involving hand carving a design in bronze and overlaying that with thin layers of pewter and more bronze. After that, a piece would be buried for six

NATURE-NODDING GREENS ARE THE ORDER OF THE DAY. GARDEN CLUB “Green is my favorite color in all areas of my life,” shares Chicago-based designer Alexandra Kaehler, who accordingly envisioned her pantry as an emerald jewel box. Leaning into her home’s leafy setting, Kaehler selected Benjamin Moore’s Essex Green, favoring a high-gloss finish over lacquer for the character of its brushstrokes. “I love the concept of bringing greenery inside,” continues the designer, noting that clients are increasingly sharing in her penchant. “After being stuck inside our houses, I think people are extra hungry for an outdoor connection, and translating that idea indoors visually is really comforting.” alexandrakaehler.com

INTO THE WOODS In a surprise to designer Marie Flanigan, Harry Potter spurred a chic color scheme— specifically, the series’ Forbidden Forest, which Flanigan’s young client requested her bedroom elicit. “Her inspiration was a lush, deep wood, and we used a moody palette to execute that,” Flanigan says. After reviewing four kindred paint samples (her own best practice), the designer opted for Sherwin-Williams’ Rocky River, pulling its strong saturation across the trim and ceiling. “Evoking nature breaks the divide between the indoors and outside,” she explains. “Here, the green envelops you and makes you feel like you’re sleeping among the trees.” marieflanigan.com

Maximalist color has gone mainstream in recent years, and the notion of “neutral” has evolved in turn. Just ask designer Nina Magon, who saw designing a bedroom at the 2021 Kips Bay Palm Beach Decorator Showhouse (top) as an opportunity to show the world that pink can be just as restful as the usual suspects. “Color is so important right now because it elicits emotions,” she muses, adding of Benjamin Moore’s Rosy Tan, “we wanted soft and cozy, and I think we nailed it.” Designer Stephanie Sabbe credits the success of this color family as a neutral canvas to its natural connotations. In her clients’ Nashville multipurpose room (bottom left), she used Benjamin Moore’s Pumice Stone, which nods to a sunbaked desert. Beyond sea and sky, “anything in earth tones is calming,” she insists. “For everyday living, surrounding yourself with fresh colors like these brings happiness,” chimes in designer Melanie Turner, who outfitted her clients’ Atlanta living room (bottom right) in Benjamin Moore’s golden Windswept Canyon. After decades of greige living, designers and clients are in agreement: dusty shades of peach, mauve, rust and rose offer a thrilling alternative.

Stormy beginnings: Thirteen years ago, Alex Geriner, founder of furniture company Doorman, discovered an old cypress door that had been salvaged from Hurricane Katrina. Inspired, he repurposed it into a bed. Do the hustle: Geriner began selling other repurposed pieces, and soon, “It became this fun side hustle,” he says. Five years later, he fully committed to the company. Thinking global, staying local: Doorman is rooted in the Crescent City, but focuses on the bigger picture. “Home is more than just four walls and the roof. It’s the planet that we stand on,” he says. Beyond recycling: Geriner pivoted from repurposing old pieces (“reclaimed wood is hard to find these days,” he notes) to broader environmental initiatives such as working with nearby lumber mills that sustainably harvest trees and turning to renewable energy. “Solar power is about 80 to 90 percent of our production energy,” Geriner adds. Modern history: “We pay homage to the style of New Orleans,” says Geriner, “but we’re bringing it into the 21st century.”

Ahead of the curve: When Tracy Hiner launched Black Crow Studios, an art-driven custom wallpaper company, she set the path for the digitally printed mural companies that would follow in her footsteps. Doing more: “I was disillusioned with the luxury design industry,” she says. “Things happening in the world weren’t being addressed.” So Hiner started donating 20 percent of her Caliber Collection proceeds to a gun buy-back program. Rebellious streak: “I started thinking I could do this with all my collections,” she says. In 2019 the designer launched Rebel with a Cause, which she describes as a way to keep making art while making a difference. No limits: Hiner donates 50 percent of her personal profits to a range of charities. Each of her wallpaper collections is dedicated to a different cause, including justice programs, inner city arts and animal rescue. “I found charities that mean something to me,” she says. “I want to make the biggest impact.”

DUCHATEAU Soul searchers: In 2006, Benjamin Buzali and Misael Tagle started talking. They had noticed the difference between aged European hardwood floors versus that of new stained wood. “There’s a cannon to wood that’s changed over time,” explains Patrick Bewley, vice president of marketing. “There’s a soul to it.” Soon the luxury flooring company, DuChateau, was born. Thinking differently: DuChateau uses a combination of smoking, water bath and hand-scraping techniques, which not only creates the desired aged-inplace look, but it’s also sustainable. “We’ve always stayed away from formaldehyde and products with emissions,” explains Bewley. “And we’ve never used wood that’s illegally harvested.” Upping the ante: The company’s DuGood Initiative followed suit a decade later. “We were heartsick by the California wildfires,” says Bewley. In a partnership with the National Forest Foundation, DuChateau plants one tree for every floor sold. A portion of those trees goes to forests impacted by the wildfires. Fierce ambition: “We’ve planted more than 25,000 trees,” says Bewley. “Sustainability is our core value.”

It was also a highly collaborative design-build process that included working hand-in-glove with the client and their architectural/ design team. In 1995 we joined the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Builder 20 organization, which is focused on building companies’ systems and processes. This collaboration has been instrumental in turning our group of great craftsmen into a professionally run firm and has greatly contributed to our success in the industry.

Karastan’s finders scour the globe for the rare and beautiful, taking inspiration from century-old sunken logs, weathered barnwood, and early 19th-century Appalachian timber. They meticulously capture nature’s imperfections and recreate them. Make them better. Give them a multilayer construction that resists water, scratches, and dents. And design them to live beautifully for generations to come.

MARBLED MARVELS Michigan-based maker Erika Stefanutti, founder of Parvum Opus, describes her hand-marbled paper obelisks, architectural models and shadow boxes as “aesthetically pleasing collector’s objects fit for a Wunderkammer.” Inspired by the Grand Tour era when travelers would acquire mementos from far-away places, the objets are a testament to how tangible items act as visual reminders of memorable experiences while also celebrating the spirit of handmade craft. Here, a grouping of marbled finds is displayed in an early20th-century glass-front cabinet from Brooklyn-based City Foundry. parvumopus.com; cityfoundry.com

EXISTENTIAL EXPRESSION Like many creatives before him, fashion designer-turned-artist Rogan Gregory looked to the female being as muse for his “Fertility Form” series. The stainless steel and bronze sculptures—nestled in an antique velvet-lined cabinet from ABC Home—are made of multiple parts stacked together and represent the many different cycles of life. These pieces, along with the salt & pepper shaker set (bottom center), exemplify Gregory’s focus on lines, proportion and asymmetrical harmony. r-and-company.com; abchome.com

NATURAL WONDERS En masse or on their own, Creel and Gow’s Stone and Mineral Spheres captivate, as do the many other exotic finds in the Upper East Side’s treasure-trove storefront. Ranging from rock crystal and zebra agate to green fluorite and orange calcite, each sphere is mounted on custom brass stands in varying heights. Seen here in an oak cabinet from antique purveyor Olde Good Things, the colorful, solid globes beg to be collected and arranged. creelandgow.com; ogtstore.com

ALL AGLOW From the classic Hurricane to the towering Leech Bowl—named after the medicinal crawler the vessels were designed to hold in British apothecaries in the 18th and 19th centuries— KRB owner Kate Rheinstein Brodsky commissioned these eye-catching glass forms in vibrant colors (shown here in amber, amethyst and brilliant blue) to delight modern collectors. Perched on the Leech Bowl is a papier-mâché snake by artist Mark Gagnon, and all objects rest atop a midcentury wood cabinet from Olde Good Things. krbnyc.com; ogtstore.com

BEGUILING BLOOMS Elizabeth Hayt’s whimsical floral creations stem from the natural world, yet nod to escapism, Surrealism and Art Nouveau influences. Made of brass, velvet, vintage millinery and Swarovski crystals, the maximalist, colorful Roses and Lilies add a jolt of playfulness to a vintage brushed-steel apothecary cabinet sourced by City Foundry. elizabethhayt.net; cityfoundry.com Cosima velvet by Colefax & Fowler throughout, cowtan.com

The Cultivated Kitchen A TAILORED SPACE DESIGNED FOR FUNCTIONALITY IS THE ULTIMATE LUXURY. W R I T T E N A N D P R O D U C E D BY K AT H R Y N G I V E N

BATH + KITCHEN LIVING

BON APPÉTIT “This is a legitimate cook’s kitchen, but it doesn’t necessarily look like one,” explains Harrison Design’s Karen Ferguson of the area she designed for a serious Atlanta-based home chef. With the client’s wish list in hand—sous vide, induction cooktop, steam oven, compost bin and more—Ferguson set about understanding how her client would use these features to deliver a dream kitchen.

LUXESOURCE.COM

The design scheme started with a dynamic quarter-figured sycamore wood wall, which conceals appliances like the refrigerator, freezer and juice bar. To warm up the space and continue the organic feel, Ferguson opted for an oak island with delicate walnut dovetail details and a handsome butcher block. She added walnut hardware throughout for cohesiveness. Varying the materials palette, the designer incorporated patinated metal for the hood, cabinetry and backsplash, which also hides a storage compartment.

But the pièce de resistance is a custom glass panel flanking the range that features gold wallpaper and fabric on the backside— a decorative focal point in the room. Notes of rose gold and brass in the fittings and finishing details balance the gray tones and brighten up the space. Ferguson’s best advice for a flawless kitchen is to ensure client conversations about functionality happen upfront. “Tell me how you plan to live and cook in the space, and then I can show you how to use it beautifully,” she says. harrisondesign.com

photos: emily followill.

In an Atlanta kitchen, Harrison Design’s Karen Ferguson worked with Block & Chisel on the cabinetry and included Fusion Blue Quartzite on the countertops. A Wolf range, rose gold Dornbracht faucets and Lutron shades complete the look.

SILVIA FRIGERIO, Managing Director “For me, the key word is ‘tailor-made,’ which is something I come back to every time I design a kitchen. When working on this Los Angeles project, I requested a list of the appliances the homeowners use daily, as they are avid cooks, and then incorporated pocket doors to conceal small appliances, double ovens and a coffee machine. The result is both sculptural and modern.” boffi.com

“Today’s designs are about fluid spaces that flow from the kitchen into other living areas, as open floor plans remain a popular request from clients. LIVING

“Entertaining has become more intimate and personal,” says artist-designer Sarah Espeute, whose hand-embroidered table linens depict playful tableaus of shared meals. “Above all,” she adds, “there’s a desire for novelty now—a wish to travel through the table—hence the word ‘tablescape!’ ”

TABLE TALK

Artist Sarah Espeute doesn’t take setting the table too seriously. Just look to the chorus of snails, turnips, wildflowers and the like, which flit between hand-stitched place settings on her whimsical linens. From a shared studio space in Marseille, France, Espeute embroiders these convivial scenes on thrifted, often century-old bed sheets conceived anew.

For Espeute, the joy in her chosen medium lies in its dualisms—her linens are nostalgic and modern; dressy and lighthearted; decorative and utilitarian. She admires blurred boundaries in design. “Multidisciplinary artists with a broad practice have reinforced the idea that there is no limit in creation,” she says, citing the work of painters like Cy Twombly and Raoul Ubac, and the architecture of Luis Barragán and Carlo Scarpa, amongst others, as inspirations. While a multidisciplinary artist herself (Espeute designs furniture and paints), there’s something about the handmade character of embroidery— and the act of gathering around the dining table—that comforts and captivates her imagination. “I think embroidery really touches people,” she muses, adding, “it’s wonderfully sentimental.” oeuvres-sensibles.fr

Like many strokes of ingenuity, Oeuvres Sensibles (meaning “sensitive objects”), Espeute’s line of tablecloths, runners and napkins, was born from necessity. Coveting unique cushions and curtains for her own home, she turned inward, resourcefully picking up an embroidery needle—and the stars aligned. When a friend gauged her interest in creating a tabletop textile for an art exhibition, “I imagined a trompe l’oeil meal and things took off from there!” she recalls.

FRENCH LESSONS

Dior Maison artistic director Cordelia de Castellane has catalogued her flair for hosting in a new book: Life In A French Country House: Entertaining For All Seasons (Rizzoli). Previewing the bounty of inspiration within, here, de Castellane shares two of her signature moves for a sui generis fête. On linens. I love to order embroidered vintage tablecloths on eBay and dye them in my washing machine. How cool is it to have formal linens dyed a shocking hot pink? Contradiction keeps design interesting.

A tabletop vignette displays de Castellane’s maximalist tendencies. “The Saint-Louis crystal glasses and Clichy vases set the stage for this winter table—I even cheated by dipping certain flowers in dye!” she notes.

THE HUNTRESS

“My grandmother used to set the most impeccable tables,” recalls Federika Longinotti Buitoni. “To this day, I remember the gorgeous ceramic parrots she used as centerpieces, and the homemade clementine ice cream that she served on perfectly carved clementine skin. I learned never to underestimate the details, as this is often all people remember.” With such early-seeded reverence for the art of entertaining, the fact that Longinotti Buitoni grew up to found Collecto—a retailer dedicated to aggregating the finest tabletop wares from around the globe—is apropos. Traversing Italy for delicate glassware, France for Limoges porcelain and Mexico for handmade pottery, Longinotti Buitoni is building a veritable melting pot of luxury, artisan-driven homewares, with a new service wing offering bespoke, soup-to-nuts dining and kitchenware curation. Grandmother, we posit, would approve. collectoworld.com

On decor. You don’t need flowers to create an exciting centerpiece. In summer, I’ll fashion a runner out of ripe tomatoes only. For the holidays, I’ll fill crystal bowls with colorful candies. And there is no more beautiful focal point than candles—lots and lots of them in different shapes and sizes.

ART OF THE EDIT STYLIST MIEKE TEN HAVE DISHES ON ENTERTAINING AU COURANT.

Trick for charming guests: My mother always serves a little bit of soup in a teacup or finger bowl as an hors d’oeuvre. I think it’s such a clever and a fun way to repurpose tableware that isn’t used very often anymore—and more interesting than cheese and crackers! Finds you’re crushing on now: I collect a lot of antique plates, but my contemporary Alberto Pinto faux bois chargers are a favorite. While a classic motif, the scale makes them look more modern than grand-mère. I almost always reach for colored glassware—amethyst, emerald and aquamarines are my go-tos. And nobody does unique block prints like Gregory Parkinson. His colors are so luscious and interesting. Always in your pantry: I have tapers in every color of the rainbow. I mix them up seasonally and according to the table’s scheme. Hosting faux pas: Serving dinner too late. On Mieke’s holiday table: Gregory Parkinson’s hand-loomed pine zest ikat napkins (top), Pinto Paris’ faux bois buffet plate (center), Nason Moretti’s Idra twisted striped water glass (above) and vintage crystal-and-sterling swan salt and pepper wells from Chairish (right).

Best hostess gift: Not arriving early! Go-to for mixing things up: It’s fun to dine in an unexpected area, like a little card table in the living room. Moving locations introduces a feeling of novelty and excitement.

Advice for a spirited table: I focus on the mix of patterns and styles more than anything else. I have a collection of tableware, textiles and decorative objects (fanciful salt cellars, for example) and I love to use them in interesting combinations, particularly mixing aesthetic eras and cultures. I don’t like when tables are too “pretty.” There should be contrast.

Atop Malaika’s hand-printed Carnation place mat and flanked by the delicately embroidered Julia napkin rests a new pottery plate produced for the brand by artisans in the village of Tunis in Fayoum.

DREAM WEAVING

“From the outset, we were determined to create a business model with social impact,” says Goya Gallagher, who alongside Margarita Andrade, co-founded Malaika—a Cairo-based atelier championing traditional Egyptian crafts. At launch, the company covered embroidery tuition for local women, but the mission expanded with their retail success. In 2018, the pair opened Threads Of Hope, a free trade school, which trains community members for Malaika employment.

In both motif and materiality, the brand’s offerings—from silk-screened place mats to intricately stitched napkins and handmade pottery—celebrate the abundance of Egypt’s natural and cultural history. Ultimately, they hope this cycle of preserving heritage craft extends beyond the hands that create, down to the consumer. Notes Gallagher, “every piece in our collection has been carefully designed as a timeless family heirloom to pass on for generations to come.” malaikalinens.com

What Our Clients Are Saying... I am happy to write about my experience with Shaun and Eddie in dealing with selling our house in July 2021. When my wife and I first met Shaun and Eddie, we barely knew them; they were recommended by a friend. However, as we worked together, we could see that their word is their bond! We trusted their recommendations. They were very aggressive in selling our house—it took four days from posting on the MLS to accepting a buyer’s offer. They shared plans on what steps they were going to take for each day prior to listing and have that laser focus stick-to-it-ness on achieving them. They were on time to all our meetings and very hard workers. They were excellent communicators and had the patience to clarify the questions that we had. Their promises are trustworthy, and their handshakes are stronger than any contract or service agreement. True gentlemen! Thank you! - Jonah Simandjuntak

STEPS to building a

CUSTOM HOME

Step 1: DISCOVERY Let’s get to know each other. We want to hear what you like and don’t like when it comes to home design. What’s your favorite style? What are your must-have features? Do you currently own the lot you want to build on or would you like our help finding it? Our team is excellent at providing feedback about property so you know what it will support from a size and style perspective. Introductory meetings are held in person at our in-house Design Studio or via phone/Zoom.

Step 2: ARCHITECTURE DESIGN Our on-staff Architecture Designer has designed beautiful homes exclusively for John Buchan Homes for over 30 years. He is a master at perfectly blending artistic beauty with practical comfort in any style. Once you have selected the property to build on, we will match your preferences with hand-selected Buchan designs from our extensive library of floor plans or work with you to design a custom floor plan that is just right for you.

Step 3: INTERIOR DESIGN Our skilled Interior Designer helps create a palette that is a true reflection of you. Working together at our in-house Design Studio ensures a seamless experience and an estimate that is aligned with your goals. At the end, you will have a complete set of specifications based on your exact interior and exterior selections. We like to call it the recipe for your custom home.

Step 4: BUILD It is time to bring your custom home vision to life. Our experienced Superintendents, with 30 years working exclusively for John Buchan Homes, ensure your home moves through each phase of construction on time and on budget, keeping you informed along the way. You become like family to us during this exciting and life changing time.

Step 5: MOVE IN This is the day we have all been working towards. You love the feeling of knowing our entire team has invested their best into building your dream home. We love offering our continued commitment to service long after you move in. WHAT MY CLIENTS ARE SAYING... “We recently hired Laura to help us sell a long-time family property. While she had already earned our respect for helping another family member sell a house a few years earlier, we still ran a competitive process as the property and house we were selling were unique. Her research and positioning suggestions made us believe she was the right candidate. Our trust in her was greatly rewarded. In addition to the top-quality marketing, Laura did an excellent job in managing the family dynamics that come with the sale of a multi-generational property. When the offers started to arrive, Laura shined with her negotiating skills (truly top drawer) and communication (we were in the loop on all details, no matter how small.) The outcome was significantly above what we thought the value of the property might be, and a high water mark for the area and type of house. We would recommend her highly to anyone looking for an experienced and professional partner." - Brock Mansfield

“Laura Halliday deserves the glowing accolades she earns. I would rate her skills in each category 10 stars if I could. Laura sold my Denny Blaine home within a week for the asking price to the perfect buyers. She responds quickly, remains positive throughout the process, and provides actionable feedback. Laura is the best real estate representative with whom I have ever worked by a massive margin. Invaluable to the sale of my home Laura understands the product she represents and how to maximize its potential. My modern-style home had been heavily remodeled with quality finishes and high-tech features. Laura was quick to internalize those characteristics, identify the appropriate buyer population, and package the home in a way that created urgency in the marketplace. Laura is confidence-inspiring. Her guidance and input were on point, and her representation, effective and smooth. Finally, if the above were not enough, Laura is naturally delightful, funny, and refreshingly sincere.” - Joan Krajewski

Known for highly innovative and effective selling strategies for luxury listings, Jen makes each client her sole focus and priority. When asked to describe the most valuable benefit she provides to her clients, Jen said, “Experience. With 22 years as a licensed real estate broker and Certified Luxury Home Marketing Specialist, my clients can rely on my experience to resolve any unforeseen obstacles to make their experience as streamlined, stress-free and profitable as possible.” Clients can expect to have fun when working with Jen, who values open and candid communication. “I partner with each client in a collaborative and transparent manner to provide peace of mind so that you can focus on the other important priorities in your life.”

“Time is the new luxury. Removing barriers so that people can focus on their personal time is a powerful differentiator.”

There are many island and waterfront properties in the Pacific Northwest but few that are quite as spectacular as this 43-acre waterfront sanctuary with its 1/2 mile of untamed shoreline on Orcas Island. “Oftentimes buyers’ dreams don’t match up with what is currently on the market because there are a number of magnificent properties that haven’t even traded yet,” Jen says. “My strong local ties and deep network allow me to play matchmaker with buyers and sellers to align their dreams.”

RESIDENT EXPERT What’s one thing that homeowners should know about the sales and marketing process? “Presentation is everything,” Jen says. This often includes staging, which helps buyers envision the lifestyle they could experience there. “Staging is an integral part of telling a property’s story and in eliciting a strong, positive and emotional impression on potential buyers. These are important elements in increasing the sale and selling price. All LMS property evaluations begin with a collaborative process with our clients to assess their properties. We then provide them with a marketing strategy that is customized specifically to their property in order to attract the buyers who have the greatest propensity to purchase their home.”

For Terry Sprague and his team at Luxe Christie’s International Real Estate, being market leaders in Portland comes down to an acronym that guides everything they do. “We follow our ‘PPSD’ principles,” Sprague says. “It stands for ‘people, process, surprise, delight,’ and it embodies a determination to deliver expert real estate consultation with service that feels fully concierge.” The goal has been met time and again with Sprague having helped countless buyers and sellers in Lake Oswego, West Linn and beyond achieve their property dreams. With more than 16 years of history in the profession and a background in the financial advisory space before that, Sprague is uniquely positioned to help his buyer clients find exactly what they’re looking for: “a fulfillment of lifestyle that includes homes that are architecturally adapted to a new vision of living, which now often includes working.”

“In Portland, nature—lakes, rivers, parks—meets the best restaurants and schools, and a sense of community. Not to mention, unparalleled feats of architecture.”

There’s something impressive about pressing that elevator button and arriving at the top of the world—or so it seems. Sitting like a crown jewel atop the John Ross building, 3601 South River Parkway, Suite 3101, offers just such an experience. LIFESTYLE MATTERS According to Sprague, a “live where others vacation” sentiment is growing among Portland buyers. “We have many clients migrating to our marketplace because of the lifestyle and experiences,” he says, and shares a few of the top draws. •C ommunity: There is a real sense of the “village” environment here, with an emphasis on great schools. •F ood: My favorites are Bamboo Sushi and Salt & Straw, but the options for dining are veritably endless. •E vents: From the market every Saturday to floating concerts on the lake, parades and more, there are tons of happenings here.

Inspired by its landscape, historic neighbors and urban dwellings, this Seattle house feels just right.

PERFECT FIT

Interior Design: Katie LeClercq, Katie LeClercq Design Studio

Classic East Coast townhomes inspired residential designer Katie LeClercq when conceiving this Seattle abode. Kippi Leonard’s artwork, And Then In Dreaming, establishes an inviting, stylish tone that’s echoed in a vintage bench covered in Holland & Sherry fabric, a rug from Jean Palmer Home and a Murano glass chandelier.

A

n old saying has it that lightning never strikes in the same place twice. But in the case of this Seattle home, it did when the new owners called Katie LeClercq for an encore performance. The residential designer, who had built the house from the ground up in Washington Park, a neighborhood populated by older dwellings, agreed to re-tailor it for the new family. To be clear, the owners, Los Angeles transplants who fell for the residence after seeing it online, weren’t looking for aesthetic-changing alterations. “We felt incredibly lucky to have stumbled on a house that already fit us so perfectly,” says the wife. Part of what drew them to it is the seamless way it fits in with the historic homes around it. While conceiving the design, LeClercq had spent a lot of time strolling the neighborhood taking in its stately architectural details; but, at the same time, the Seattle native was contemplating the hallmarks of classic townhomes located nearly 3,000 miles away. In her mind, East Coast and West Coast styles merged in a confluence that might seem unlikely in theory but is easy and appealing in execution. “I wanted the new home to nestle into the area in a pleasing way. At the same time, I wanted to incorporate the kind of factory elements you find in a New York City townhome,” she says. “You could say this is a Pacific Northwest historic classic with a nod to a traditional East Coast city dwelling.” LeClercq, who initially completed the project under the shingle of her former firm, H2 Design Build, and in consultation with since-retired architect Holden Withington, allowed her natural design inclinations to lead the way. “To create this home, I let the site and the surrounding neighborhood inspire me, and I followed my instincts. My choice of materials and colors—it’s all instinctual,” she notes. LeClercq’s design gut led her to marry regional details like a brick exterior and a steeply pitched roof with the more industrial-leaning features commonly found in urban East Coast residences, such as interior metal windows. While the brick exterior makes the dwelling right at home with

its established neighbors, the interior layout is decidedly more modern. “This house is about family gathering and entertaining,” LeClercq explains. “The kitchen and the great room—a combined dining and living room—are the heart of it.” Although the kitchen is subtly delineated from the larger space by a passageway lined with steelframed windows, the rooms live and feel as one. All three enjoy a connection with the large fireplace set within a wall of green shelves, making the space feel cozy and welcoming. “The thought was that the rooms would feel accessible and allow people to gather easily, whether the residents are hosting a dinner party, or kids are doing their homework at the table while the adults are relaxing in the living area with a book,” she notes. The color palette, largely pulled from nature, was chosen for its timeless appeal. “Again, it goes back to instincts,” LeClercq says. “We used a lot of greens, the kind you find in a rich forest—an element that’s central to the Pacific Northwest. When I go outside, these are the colors I see.” Referencing the deep green of the kitchen cabinets and the lighter shade of the same hue in the great room’s fireplace wall, the designer notes that the verdant shades are timeless classics. The color scheme also includes touches of mustard, brick red and pink. “This is a Northwest-friendly palette. There is a lot of gray in Seattle, so it’s nice to walk into a space and feel the warmth and depth of the colors,” she says. “The balance of saturation and tones gives the home a comfortable and inviting feeling.” To furnish the home for the new family, LeClercq sourced items that reflect the timelessness and collected nature of the architecture. “I call this project the ‘eclectic classic,’ ” she says. “It’s eclectic in its layers and how styles are combined, but ultimately it’s classic as I don’t see these things as being trendy or ever going out of style. It’s a combination of vintage items, new elements and textures.” The blend creates a house with an enduring appeal that belies its age. “When people visit, they are always surprised this is new construction and not a remodel,” says the homeowner. Since LeClercq’s goal was to create a home for the ages, she takes that as a high compliment, noting: “The residences in Washington Park were built to last—that’s how they did it then, and that’s how I do it now.”

For the great room’s dining area, LeClercq chose a Wolf Wood Co table, chairs by Nickey Kehoe and Aerin for Visual Comfort chandeliers from Circa Lighting. The living area is appointed with a Jayson Home lounge chair and sofa, a Cisco Home ottoman and a vintage Eames chair. Grounding the arrangements are carpets from Driscoll Robbins Fine Carpets.

“The clients and I both share a love of our families’ Scottish roots,” says designer Shannon Adamson of Scott and Kristen Kirkpatrick, the owners of this Snohomish County abode. To honor the couple’s heritage in the entry, Adamson laid tiles from United Tile in a tartan pattern. Crowning the space is a Nemo Lighting fixture.

F

or a designer, the chance to do their first ground-up solo project is a special opportunity. And if that opportunity also offers the ability to put a significant stamp on the architectural side of things? Well, then it becomes all the more meaningful. “I was really excited,” recalls designer Shannon Adamson, “It’s wonderful to have a blank slate and to be able to explore all of the possibilities without dealing with existing conditions.” Her clients, Scott and Kristen Kirkpatrick, had reached out for help realizing their dream home on a site in Snohomish County. “They had never taken on a big construction project before and needed guidance,” she says. That decision, says Scott, “turned out to be one of the best things we ever did.” The couple had acquired plans for a house, which sketched out the footprint and the basic interior walls—but, notes Adamson, “there were some issues that needed to be untangled.” A few were small: details that read more early 21st century, like an arched Juliet balcony in the living room, a lack of built-ins and awkward door placements in the primary suite. Others loomed larger: a laundry closet that couldn’t accommodate even the smallest washer and dryer and a primary suite without windows—just a set of large French doors. The designer also reworked a media room into an inviting club room (“because ‘family room’ is not a cool enough name to encapsulate all that’s going on in this space,” she says with a laugh), expanded the size of the primary bathroom and even chose the home’s site to take advantage of the sun. “I love space planning,” she says. Adamson’s input didn’t end with the drawings, which garnered her a fan in the project’s general contractor Mitch Falkner. “It was probably the most detailed set of interior plans that I’ve ever worked with,” he raves. The designer was also a fixture on the job site because “there are always unknowns,” she shares. Falkner concurs: “When you’re building a house, not everything works out as planned.” Her presence also meant the designer and contractor could refine details and troubleshoot issues as they arose. She and Falkner both point to the kitchen’s pantry door as one example of what this kind of

teamwork can achieve: It completely disappears into the surrounding cabinetry thanks to the combined efforts of trades ranging from the door supplier to the cabinetmaker and painter. “It was a very custom piece,” says Falkner. “It seems like one little aspect, but it’s the small things that count in the end.” The team’s level of craftsmanship and attention to detail extends throughout the home. It’s there in mitered cuts of the molding and trims and how it performs a graceful waltz with the Irish linen herringbone fabric in the club room; it’s in the exacting placement of the sconces in the club room and the kitchen; and, in the tactile finger pulls of the primary bathroom’s vanity. Perhaps most clearly, that attention to craftsmanship is in the entry, where tile laid in a playful plaid pattern pays homage to both the clients’ and designer’s Scottish roots. When installing the showstopper, Adamson recalls, “The tile guy and I were laying out the tile pattern while they were framing in case they needed to adjust a wall.” More than in most homes, lighting was essential for ambiance. “No matter where you live, light is important, but especially in the Pacific Northwest,” says Adamson, who collaborated with Nathanael Washam of Luminous NW on the lighting design. “On a February afternoon, it’s so dark inside you have to turn the lights on.” Floor lamps and sconces, chandeliers and task lights act in concert to brighten, but not overpower, the interior. “It’s really about designing in zones and layers so that there’s a lot of control based on what the needs are and how the space is being used,” she explains. The furniture and accessories reinforce the initial impression of substance that permeates these rooms, with traditional elements offset by lighter or unexpected moments. While initially resistant, the Kirkpatricks now cite these touches as their favorites. “Shannon introduced us to that next level of quality and pushed us appropriately,” Scott explains. He singles out the club room’s dark palette (“We were super nervous,” Scott says, “and now it’s our favorite room”); the bedroom’s deep eggplant accents; the dining room’s vibrant teal grasscloth; and the built-in desks in the children’s bedrooms. “To have somebody who goes above and beyond but has your best interests at heart,” Scott muses, “it just makes you feel good.”

The panels are inset with a menswear-inspired Irish linen herringbone fabric wallcovering by Wolf-Gordon.” For the window bench cushion, she opted for Scottish wool blankets from Highland Store in London. Opposite: Visitors perched on Four Hands stools at the club room’s stylish bar can see the rest of the goings-on thanks to a mirrored backsplash. Adamson mounted a Thomas O’Brien for Visual Comfort sconce on the wall, which is painted a custom gray shade. The Grohe faucet is from Ferguson.

Opposite: Positioned above the Lazar bed, the windows by Marvin allow light to stream into the primary bedroom while maintaining privacy. spent 18 years in London, and all of my work was based on dancers and music,” recalls Ashland, Oregon-based artist Claire Burbridge. “When I moved here about a decade ago, I wanted to understand the environment, so, over the first year, I walked and collected and spent a lot of time looking at mushrooms, seeds and bark.” As Burbridge returned to her creative practice, she realized that time spent outside had “recalibrated” her work. “There wasn’t a figure in sight,” she says. Surrounded by art books, vintage dresses in her favorite palettes and objects brought home from walks (colorful lichens, sticks carved by beetles, a red-banded polypore found at Waldo Lake), Burbridge creates almost pointillistic explorations of her environment. “Nature adheres to a matrix, or spirals or circles, and I love being surrounded by things that reflect that,” she explains. “I integrate those forms into my works, but it’s not an illustration of them—that’s not my métier.” Her mixed-media pieces, some of which can be large scale, often require that she work on the floor, sitting at the center of the image in a series of changing postures. “I start with a graphite grid of interlocking circles or spiral formations, then I do an impressionistic pattern with watercolors, and then I go in with pen and pencils for detail,” notes the graduate of Magdalen College Oxford, who got her masters in printmaking from what became the University of the Arts London. “But one’s process is always changing.” In the spirit of change, Burbridge has used her background in printmaking to launch an initial collection of 10 wallpapers inspired by her fine art. (The latter is represented by Nancy Toomey Fine Art in San Francisco and will be exhibited at Ashland’s Schneider Museum of Art this coming April.) “Repeat wallpaper was the natural way to achieve what I wanted,” she says of her desire to create a more immersive experience. Plus, it’s the chance for more people to have access to her work. Perhaps understandably, the eco-friendly papers, currently sold through her website, are finding particular favor with urban clients whose doors don’t open to quite the same splendor as she has just outside hers. “They get me into a good place,” Burbridge says of those auspicious morning walks, which she still tries to regularly take. “There’s no point in just putting work out there that’s not consciously done.”

“I go into nature, absorb it and produce an artwork that is, hopefully, imbued with the essence of the experience I’ve had,” says artist Claire Burbridge (left), whose home studio in Ashland, Oregon, offers easy access to trails that lead into the Siskiyou Mountains. Her impressionistic yet detailed pieces incorporate graphite, watercolor and pen (below and opposite).

All the Right Moves Dynamic forms shape the experience of a modern Seattle house perched on a breathtaking hillside lot. W R I T T E N BY C H R I S T I N E D E O R I O P H OTO G R A P H Y BY ANDREW GIAMMARCO

In the two-story foyer of this Seattle home, a stepped installation of Vibia’s Set sconces creates a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. “They draw your eye all the way up and fill the space the same way a powerful piece of art would,” designer Kathleen Glossa says. The gallery above displays a woven metal sculpture by Leah Gerrard from Gray Sky.

T

he Sunday afternoon tour of open houses in the Laurelhurst neighborhood wasn’t serious, says a Seattle-based healthcare executive, wife and mother of three. It was just an exploration born of frustration with a renovation project underway at her current place—until she visited the last property on her list. Situated on a hillside lot, the two-story aerie created in 1957 by Hollywood set designer, artist and architect John Stewart Detlie featured a glasswalled living room that seemed to float among the treetops. Renowned artist Virginia Banks had once called it home, adding a hydraulically controlled dining table that disappeared into the floor, and using its first-floor bedrooms as her studio and the open stairwell as an aviary for tropical birds. Equally notable were the home’s views of Lake Washington and Mount Rainier. “As I looked around, I had goosebumps,” the wife recalls. “I thought, ‘I just want to be here.’ ” Her designer Kathleen Glossa—who agreed that the home’s promise far exceeded that of their current renovation project and endorsed the couple’s decision to make an offer—understood completely. “When you stepped into the house, you could still feel that artistic soul,” she says. Which is what she and architect Dave Norrie devoted themselves to preserving, even after Norrie determined that the existing wood-frame structure would need significant repairs, updates and replacements, and couldn’t support the new, open floorplan and third-floor bedroom addition their clients required. “The house was telling us what we wanted,” Glossa says. “We needed to maintain that spirit of confident modernism.” Starting afresh, the new structure reinvents its predecessor’s stacked and stepped rectangular forms, now framed in steel and wood and clad with dark, rough-sawn cedar under the guidance of general contractor Clay March. It rises above a garden that landscape architect Zack Thomas planted with ferns, grasses and meadow flowers for year-round color and texture and aspens and birches for privacy. “The design is about the experience,” Norrie explains, “and it starts from the street, where you’re below the house. As you enter, there are windows that present the experience of being on a hill; you really feel the earth. Then you come to a stair that leads up to a glass room where you’re in the trees.” This dramatic space,

encompassing the living room, dining room and kitchen, opens to a view deck via floor-to-ceiling folding glass doors. Above it, a new bedroom suite delivers the sensation of hovering above the house. Norrie and Glossa continued the experience by activating every room with dynamic design elements: a pivoting entry portal, sliding doors and wall panels, cabinets that seemingly float above recessed steel plinths—including one that shape-shifts into a pass-through from the dining area to the pantry—and lighting that invites interaction. “Look at the dining fixture, and your eye can’t help but notice the stepped-down portion of the fixture, reminiscent of the series of stepped spaces in the home,” Glossa says. In the foyer, an installation of linear wall lights draws attention up to the gallery, where a suspended woven-wire sculpture turns in the breeze. Merely hanging art on walls is antithetical to Glossa’s approach. “The collaborative process started with, ‘How is art part of the architecture?’ ” she says. In the kitchen, a photograph of a Texas longhorn—printed on metal and finished with a wipeable coating—forms the backsplash. On the first floor, an eye-catching work by Warren Dykeman is painted on the concrete floor. The color and energy in the artwork by Alden Mason and Alfred Harris also inspired Glossa’s modern furnishing selections, which include locally made pieces like a live-edge dining table and an entry bench that overlays wood on brightgreen metal. The juxtaposition of hard and soft repeats on a Glossa-designed coffee table that floats curved bands of blue and green metal atop a black metal base. “It’s not often you’re designing a house with a bird’s-eye view of the trees, and I wanted to acknowledge that viewpoint by mirroring some of the same colors,” says Glossa, who took a more stringent approach to fixed finishes. “The architecture of the home is very confident, and we wanted to convey that same confidence with the interiors—but synergistically, not competitively,” she says. “So, we all agreed that our materials palette needed to be super disciplined”—just black, white and blond rift-sawn white oak—“so nothing is shouting, ‘Look at me!’ ” Except for the views, which, the wife promises, will keep her away from open houses forevermore. “I feel more than satisfied,” she muses. “It’s a magical feeling to live in so much light surrounded by trees and art.”

MAKE YOUR MARK “Our design philosophy motivates us to find uniqueness in each commission—and our delivery throughout the duration of a project is focused on nurturing that individuality,” de Reus says. The firm’s hardware product line, designed in collaboration with Sun Valley Bronze, enhances its bespoke approach, giving clients one-of-a-kind accents to choose from. “The product line ties in nicely with our design services.”

Collaboration between experienced architects and savvy clients is the key to delivering outstanding results. For the professionals at Farmer Payne Architects, the best approach to architecture is guided by the fundamentals of design, while the hopes, dreams and visions of their clients are what drive the process. “We know the right questions to ask and what to put in front of our clients to get them imagining their dream home,” says Scott Payne, who co-founded the firm with Jamie Farmer. “Our clients then remain heavily involved throughout the schematic design phase.” From there, Farmer Payne Architects assembles a first-rate team of creators, planners, builders and designers to make the client’s concepts come to life. “We pride ourselves on engaging and enhancing these relationships,” Payne says. “We are all about getting the right folks together to make the process and final product memorable.”

Building for a sustainable future is not as simple as finding up-and-coming technologies or predicting eventual outcomes. Knowing that, Farmer Payne Architects applies a three-fold approach that considers the past, present and future of design. First, the firm frequently uses reclaimed materials like antique timbers and brick as an environmentally friendly ode to the past that adds character and dimension while conserving resources. The second strategy involves using locally sourced materials like siding and stone to alleviate the environmental impact of the construction supply chain, while supporting the community. Finally, they incorporate sustainable features throughout their projects, such as solar power, strategically placed windows, and structures and rooflines that account for the climate and the surrounding environment.

“I have a hunger for detail that I want to be apparent in every aspect of my work.”

garretcordwernerdesign

Garret Werner channels his history and expertise into the exact right profession. “Everyone is the product of their combined experiences,” Werner says. “My father and grandfather were builders and real estate developers, so I was raised on construction sites, swinging hammers, digging ditches, and learning about electrical and plumbing. You name it, my father had me doing it.” This practical experience is one of many things that sets Werner apart from other architects and designers and is the reason that Garret Cord Werner Architects and Interior Designers takes a comprehensive approach to clients’ projects. “We push the boundaries of industry norms by designing the architecture, interiors, lighting, landscape and furniture as one artistic vision,” Werner says. This holistic design process is not only unique, it has delivered positive results each and every time.

BACK TO NATURE Backed onto an old-growth forest with a crystalline creek running through it, Werner’s childhood home gave him an early love for nature that has influenced his designs and shaped him professionally. “The use of water and light reflection lend spirituality to my work,” Werner says. “We bring water into our projects to evoke its power, serenity and tranquility.” Other natural materials—like stone and wood—that lace Werner’s childhood memories are intrinsic to his modern-day designs as well. “I want my clients’ residences to be truly special, so I seek out different materials that will make their projects memorable and unique,” Werner says. “I remain focused on exquisite details and don’t follow trends. The result is design that is timeless, sophisticated and highly personal.”

Above Garret Cord Werner’s holistic approach to design seamlessly blends interior and exterior spaces, bringing the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape into the home. MAXIMIZING SOCIAL MEDIA JayMarc Homes used to host monthly in-person seminars, where families were invited to visit model homes. But during the pandemic, those meetings became weekly hour-long webinars. By promoting the virtual meetups on social media, the number of attendees at each event has doubled. “The digital sphere allows us to share our thought leadership in custom home building and lets those who are interested in building a custom home become confident in the process and familiar with our team,” Rousso says.

Thirty-one years ago, Jay Mezistrano and Marc Rousso let their curiosity lead the way—first to fixer-uppers and rental properties, then to land development, and finally custom home building. Today, the duo behind JayMarc Homes delivers home buyers in Greater Seattle with one-of-a-kind places to live. “Our philosophy to stay steady and authentic, as opposed to thinking bigger is always better, has been one of the things that has contributed to our growth,” Rousso says. As the CEO of JayMarc Homes, he’s created a customercentric ethos that puts an emphasis on allowing his team members to make autonomous decisions. “Every employee has the ability to personalize the experience for any client or partner of ours,” he says. “This empowers our team to always do what’s right. This makes a difference as it can really influence the overall happiness of a client.”

BRIGHT IDEAS

lochwoodlozier

Currently, Lochwood-Lozier Architectural Designs is undertaking an incredibly unique project: their 2021 Northwest Idea House. The home will feature new products from local retailers and distributors, all while raising money for charity. The modern Scandinavianstyle home will feature cutting-edge innovations that provide healthy, sustainable living. “As home builders, it is our job to be change leaders in the industry,” Mamiya says. Designed with post-pandemic culture in mind, the home highlights areas that bring families together to live and work. “As people spend more time at home both living and working, architecture and interior design must be updated and enhanced to reflect this new way of being,” Mamiya shares. “With each and every project, we strive to create spaces that make being at home a luxury.”

Because building a home can be challenging and stressful, it is essential to work with an experienced, comprehensive team of professionals. When homeowners build with Lochwood-Lozier Architectural Designs, they’re electing a service far more extensive than mere construction. “We strive to set ourselves apart by practicing an A-to-Z approach,” says Senior Designer, Matt Mamiya. “We do everything under one roof, from land acquisition to move-in, and even service and maintenance after completion of the project.” By taking a multi-faceted approach, the firm removes the need for numerous subcontractors, which simplifies communication and creates a smooth process for the client. “We understand the weight of our responsibility and take it seriously,” Mamiya says. “Our philosophy is centered on building strong relationships with our clients and community, as much as building timeless homes.”

In an era of standardized concepts and cookie-cutter design there is a growing demand for handcrafted, bespoke products, furnishings and architectural accents. Nicholas and Jessica Mayer, and their team of highly skilled artisans at Mayer Designs, Inc. have been conceiving and constructing custom metal pieces in Seattle since 2007 and have earned a sterling reputation that makes them a must within their design and build communities. “We have created a wide variety of custom projects for some of the most talented designers and contractors in the industry,” Jessica says. “After 16 years of marriage and 14 years in business together, Nicholas and I are still striving to make the best products we possibly can. Our fabrication quality and wide variety of finish options are what put us on the map, and our team’s attention to detail and expertise ensures the best quality work every time.”

Nicholas and Jessica Mayer’s unique histories feed their shared passion for great design and fabrication. “We each grew up in the building industry— Nicholas learned metalwork at his father’s metal fabrication shop here in Seattle—and I was raised around construction sites because my father ran his own residential building firm for nearly 50 years. We were fortunate to be inspired by superior craftsmanship and the entrepreneurial spirit from a young age.”
