LETTER EDITOR’S
One of the great pleasures of editing this publication is being habitually exposed to design from across the country—an endless array of styles, influences, penchants and the like. In any given week, I review some three dozen homes from more than 15 cities. It’s an abundance to see, and to weigh in on. The weekly parade of living rooms and gardens, kitchens and closets, laundry rooms and bedrooms gives me a wonderful perch from which to view American design. If you asked what I’ve observed lately, I would say it’s exuberance. I’ve spotted elation expressed subtlety with tone-on-tone interiors, and conversely, seen it pronounced with heaps of whimsy and sparkle in vibrant wallpapers, glossy walls and astonishing lighting. What these homes, and the people living in them, are conveying is their taste and joyfulness. Aren’t we all fortunate to delight in the mix?

ONES TO WATCH HOUSE OF LÉON
New home furnishings company House of Léon recently opened in Los Angeles’ Koreatown. Helmed by 28-year-old twins Jordan and Steven Neman, this duo knows a thing or two about differentiating styles and standing out. Luxe checked in to learn more. house-of-leon-furniture.com Tell us about your inaugural designs. Jordan Neman: Our first collection, Ojai, showcases beauty in simplicity. Our new collection, Kyoto, exercises wabi-sabi minimalism fused with Scandinavian comfort. And a forthcoming collection pays tribute to the Persian Empire. Our goal is to create pieces that build character as they age, eventually entering the vintage arena as coveted pieces with a story to share. How do the collections work? Steven Neman: Every collection has its own
identity but works in harmony with the other lines to give our customers creative freedom. We aim to alleviate the pressures that come with designing a home. Where are they made? S.N.: Each of our pieces is handmade from natural materials at a family-owned atelier in Turkey. It’s rare to find entirely handmade furniture, and almost unheard of at the price point that we offer. How’s working together? J.N.: We have immense trust in each other, and every decision must be unanimous. As twins with similar thought patterns, that isn’t difficult to do!
LAUNCH
L.A. designer Erica Islas has turned her love of the city into a new line of rugs for Mehraban. The eight-piece collection comprises wool and silk rugs made by artisans in India and Nepal, all of which can be ordered in varying sizes. “Mexican architects Ricardo Legorreta and Luis Barragán have inspired me for years. Being Mexican-American, I thought including them in the collection would be a wonderful homage to my own heritage,” shares Islas. Her designs are a fi tting celebration of color and pattern: Muros (above) was inspired by the two architects’ use of bold hues, light and shadow, while Still evokes sunlight moving through a room. But it’s Maison that strikes the most personal note, with its undulating grid of streets and neighborhoods inspired by aerial views of her beloved L.A. “The motifs created by our own infrastructure are art,” she says. mehraban.com

OPENING
PURE SALT INTERIORS
SCENE
DESIGN
Infused with their signature light and bright coastal aesthetic, designers Aly Morford and Leigh Lincoln of Pure Salt Interiors have opened the doors of their new flagship in Newport Beach. A 5,000-square-foot space, it’s layered with vignettes devoted to living, dining, bedrooms and nurseries, as well as an apothecary space focused on plants and wellness items. The designers have also integrated their
interiors studio, which has grown exponentially since they founded it in 2016. Also new is their partnership with Tirzah International, an L.A.based organization focused on leadership training and small-business investment for women around the world. Pure Salt is collaborating with women-run artisan businesses in Kenya and Tanzania to create pieces sold via their website, opening these makers to a bigger audience. What began last year as a small ceramics collection now includes textiles and accessories, with Morford and Lincoln traveling to Africa this July to collaborate in-person with their partners. puresaltinteriors.com; tirzah.org.
TRANSFORMATION Brothers Dion and Arin Der have hit refresh on Pinkys, the L.A.-based windows and doors company founded by their father in 1978. Based in the up-and-coming arts district of Vernon, Pinkys boasts the largest inventory of iron doors and steel windows in the U.S., plus a clientele that includes Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent—with the latter designing the firm’s forthcoming showroom. “We champion the creative lifestyle of Los Angeles to make high-grade architectural elements which break down walls and create infinite opportunities,” says Dion. Dutch doors, pivot doors, barn doors, sliding doors, French doors—you name it—and myriad windows and locks: Each design allows for expansive glazing with minimalist frames that maximize that good West Coast mojo. pinkysirondoors.com

FOR YOUR FIXTURES Following up on a successful furniture line, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams has collaborated with L.A. designer Brigette Romanek again, this time for a lighting collection called Luce. The six-piece assortment includes a chandelier (above), floor lamp, table lamp, two styles of sconces and a flush-mount ceiling light, all in a warm, antique-brass finish. Romanek’s statement-making designs meld graceful arches with orb-shaped lights reminiscent of vintage Italian design, all mixed with her modern spirit and knack for creating luxurious but livable spaces—the kind of romantic interiors that have won her a high-profile client roster that includes Beyoncé, Gwyneth Paltrow and Joe Jonas. mgbwhome.com; romanekdesignstudio.com.

NEW & NOTEWORTHY
FOR YOUR FLOORS The Rug Company turns 25 this year, with much to celebrate. Not only has the brand rolled out dozens of dynamic, artful collections, its done so in partnership with GoodWeave to ensure ethical manufacturing. Collabs have been with such international luminaries as Alexander McQueen (including an artist-driven series with the late designer’s Saraband Foundation which champions next-gen creatives) and L.A. has proved fertile ground, too. Over the years, The Rug Company has tapped locals like Kelly Wearstler—whose latest collection, including Cascadia Fawn (above), launches this summer—Adam Hunter, Nicole Fuller, Martyn Lawrence Bullard and Rodarte for designs. therugcompany.com
FOR YOUR FURNITURE Designers Clay McLaurin and Todd Piercy have debuted their new brand McLaurin & Piercy with a collection of 100 designs woven at their historic DTLA mill. AN EYE-CATCHING LINE OF WALLCOVERINGS AND TEXTILES CHAMPIONS THE SPIRIT AND TRADITIONS OF LOUISIANA. W R I T T E N B Y K E L LY V E LO C C I J O L L I F F E
For over six decades, artist Francis X. Pavy has been keenly observing his South Louisiana surroundings. The region’s unique landscape and rich Cajun culture have been driving forces behind the narrative—and iconography—of his vibrant paintings. “I’m intrigued by the complexity of life here,” says Pavy, who’s been working out of his suburban Lafayette studio for 40 years. “It has depth and meaning; there is a story to be told.” Now, Pavy is drawing on imagery from his vast body of artwork for a debut line of textiles and wallcoverings. Marshgrass, a block print featuring small vertical lines rising from a horizontal base. He first noticed the symbol, which is used to designate marshland on a map, in a geologist’s office as a child. “I didn’t consciously say, ‘I need to remember this,’ but it became a part of an inner visual vocabulary that I filed away in my brain.” Then there is Briars, a creeping branch-like design inspired by thorny plants of the same name. As a teenager, Pavy watched as the sun illuminated a cluster growing in an empty field. “Sometimes, imagery makes a burning impression in my memory,” he says. “Or it comes back to me in a flash.” The artist, who teamed up with his wife to bring the line to fruition, is also using this opportunity to develop new

In Stormy Waters, Pavy depicts “flora and fauna overcome by storm water.” They adorn the fabric alongside iconography of a man with his dog and a small telephone pole symbolizing “the edge of civilization.” This narrative is inspired by the state’s historic flood, in 2016, and devastation the artist witnessed firsthand. “I’m interpreting what I see in Louisiana,” he explains. “We have our own identity in food, speech and music. LEADING MAKERS IN THE DESIGN WORLD DISCUSS THE IMPORTANCE OF ART AND CRAFT SCHOOLS, AND WHY NOW MAY BE THE TIME TO ENROLL. W R I T T E N BY M A I L E P I N G E L
Over the past several years, many people have spent time getting in touch with their creative side. As a result, an exploration, and revival, of craft—think pottery, woodworking and painting—has led to a renewed interest in arts educational programs. Several highly acclaimed schools across the country offer dynamic workshops and degrees, allowing students to spend years honing in on a specialized area of study or simply attend classes to become better
acquainted with a new interest. Who better to weigh in on the merits of a formal education than three celebrated alums: glass artist Dale Chihuly on Haystack Mountain School of Crafts; industrial designer Jay Sae Jung Oh on Cranbrook Academy of Art; and glass artist and painter Corey Pemberton on Penland School of Craft. Their success stories not only bolster the legacies of these unique institutions but serve as inspiration for the next generation of makers.

For Oh, Cranbrook’s broad-thinking approach lured her from Seoul to the Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, campus. “Their industrial design program lets you focus on your interests,” she explains. “The historical buildings, the environment—students from other majors like architecture, engineering, even anthropology—was fascinating to me.” This influx of varying viewpoints intensified her creativity, and she quickly garnered the attention of design pioneer Gaetano Pesce, who offered her an internship and job opportunity after graduation. While now focused on her successful eponymous firm, Oh finds guest-lecturing at her alma mater a symbiotic relationship. “I like the engagement,” she says. “I get to see what students are interested in, and who they think the rock stars of design are today.” While studying graphic design at Virginia Commonwealth University, Los Angelesbased Pemberton developed an interest in glassmaking that led him to a summer

program at Penland in North Carolina. “My hand skills improved so much that the instructor offered me a job,” he recalls. Pemberton went on to assistantships and residencies, returning to Penland for a coveted two-year fellowship where he augmented glassmaking with painting and other artforms. Today, Pemberton continues to remain busy, dividing his time between glassmaking and painting practices; an upcoming teaching stint at Haystack this summer; and serving as Director of Crafting the Future, a program creating more equitable opportunities for BIPOC students interested in the arts. “Craft schools are immersive and less formal than the collegiate route,” he says. “I’m a huge advocate [of them] and know how much you can learn.”

Regarded as one of the founding fathers of contemporary American craft, Chihuly studied glass making at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Upon graduating, he enrolled at the Rhode Island School of Design where he received an MFA and taught for many years. Throughout his tenure, Chihuly spent summers teaching at Haystack in Deer Isle, Maine, during which time he realized “artists teaching artists is vital to helping students find their own path.” Founded in 1950, the school was considered experimental because it had no permanent faculty, nor did it offer degrees. Remaining true to its roots, Haystack’s workshops and residencies are still taught by visiting faculty and remain sought-after programs today. Chihuly credits Haystack with influencing him to cofound Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle, and, while no longer teaching, he continues to encourage “students to surround themselves with other artists. Watch how they live, not just how they work.”
UKRAINE’S GUNIA PROJECT SHINES A LIGHT ON THE COUNTRY’S LONG-STANDING CRAFT TRADITION. W R I T T E N BY M I C H E L L E B R U N N E R
In folk art, every brush stroke and every stitch tells a story, and when those crafts are lost to time, so too is a piece of history. It’s a reality that Natasha Kamenska and Maria Gavryliuk, founders of the Gunia Project, know all too well. “Handmade items have always been at the heart of Ukrainian life, yet few people pass on the beauty of this national culture to their children,” says Gavryliuk. In 2017, while volunteering at the Ivan Honchar Museum’s National Centre of Folk Culture in Kyiv, both women began to wonder why younger generations had forgotten folk crafts integral to their heritage. It sparked an idea: Form a collective of artists dedicated to producing Ukrainian crafts for a new audience using the traditional, timeworn skills of their ancestors.
LUXESOURCE.COM
Ceramic plates available through Ukraine’s Gunia Project depict religious and folk motifs from the country’s rich artistic history.
The duo embarked on a quest to find artisans, traveling throughout Ukrainian villages to seek out craftspeople by word of mouth. At a market in the town of Yavoriv, they encountered a gunya, a handmade sheep’s wool coat that serves as a talisman-like garment used during major life events. Finding inspiration in the object, they christened the company Gunia Project in 2019. Handmade items sold through the collective include fiber arts, glass and jewelry, in addition to a large inventory of painted ceramics featuring playful takes on folk-art motifs and religious themes. Many of the pieces sport images of saints and angels that loom large in Ukrainian faith and lore (their ceramic production
began with a single artist who happened to be trained as an icon painter). While the artistic sensibility of these pieces feels modern and fresh, the subject matter is timeless and deeply ingrained in the national identity. For Gavryliuk and Kamenska, preserving Ukrainian culture for future generations has acquired even more significance as of late. “With the war at our doors, we know that our culture needs to be preserved and cherished,” says Gavryliuk. “Art is so closely intertwined with history that destroying folk crafts destroys our cultural heritage, and the country as a whole,” adds Kamenska. guniaproject.com, thenopo.com

Find & Seek TODD NICKEY, THE DESIGNER AND PROPRIETOR BEHIND LOS ANGELES’ NICKEY KEHOE, DISHES ON THE THRILL—AND IMPORTANCE—OF THE HUNT.
Todd Nickey and Amy Kehoe seek out beautiful pieces for design projects as well as their Los Angeles shop from flea markets, antique fairs and the like. Shown here is one such find: a vintage carved-wood entry door.
LUXESOURCE.COM
My partner Amy Kehoe and I have built our lives around being out in the world— at craft fairs, art shows, antique fairs and even flea markets—unearthing sources of inspiration. Although I enjoy searching for things online, it’s important for us to touch and feel objects. There’s only so much you can see about patina, texture and scale on a screen! We met a young woman, just out of art school, at a craft show a few years ago, and she was making beautiful sculptures and serveware from wood. I don’t want to sound too ‘woo-woo,’ but when she invited us to pick up her work, I could feel the energy she put into making it. The way she sands her pieces gives them a unique surface, something that’s impossible to manufacture. It’s exhilarating to meet people who are passionate about creating and making. Hunting and shopping in person is also where kismet happens. At times, I almost feel like a water witch with a divining rod because something just draws me to a piece—I find what I love by clearing my mind and exploring. I recently discovered a forged-iron company that makes the most extraordinary pieces and when I first saw them, I got jelly belly for a few minutes because it was such a thrill. This is an era where appreciation for art and craft is growing, and we are embracing it on all levels, from crude to posh and fancy. The importance of handmade goods can’t be overstated—it’s fundamental; it’s everything. nickeykehoe.com

Common Threads KYLE BUNTING RETURNS TO HIS ROOTS WITH AN AMERICANA-INSPIRED COLLECTION. For hide rug designer Kyle Bunting, family has always been at the core of his work. Take, for example, the Austinbased creatives lauded range of rugs, wall coverings and home accessories, which incorporate methods passed down from his father Jim, who owned a hide art and furniture company. Bunting’s inventive take on these techniques ultimately led to his eponymous empire of beautiful yet functional décor objects for the home. Now, more than two decades since getting his start, Bunting’s work is once again being shaped by those near and dear. This time around, Bunting looked to his mother, Peggy, and her longstanding passion for quilting as inspiration for his latest collection, Stateside. Playing off the striking patterns and graphic geometry of these traditional American textiles, the colorful new rug designs fuse the handiwork of both parents—all with Bunting’s signature spin. Each floor covering is created from pieced-together scraps, culled from repurposed hide cuttings and excess material collected during production. What’s more, the collaboration also presents an opportunity to spotlight an unsung artform. Women like Peggy, and her family, have looked to quilting as a means of expression, love and practicality for centuries. “One of my most prized quilts was my grandmother’s,” she explains. “This handmade heirloom was crafted 65 years ago, and it’s evident that each stitch was painstakingly, and thoughtfully, made.” It is the Buntings’ hope that these modern interpretations may also become treasured keepsakes and serve as timeless reminders of the historical fabric that connects families from one generation to the next. kylebunting.com

Possessing the savvy and talent to combine color, pattern, texture and art with inventive, functional designs is the key to great interior statements. This is something that Lise Abraham and Suzanne Currie, co-founders of Ulloo42, have been bringing to their sophisticated trade and consumer clientele since 2018. Tapping into their shared love of art—Abraham has long been a passionate collector and Currie is a noted collage artist herself—the partners begin every design with it in mind. “Our approach is very particular because art is the foundation of everything we do,” Currie says. “Whether it is a piece of furniture or an entire interior scheme, we apply original art, handmade fabrics and handcrafted elements to useful and beautiful objects.” The duo is celebrated for their originality in their interior design services and the artistry of their custom works, which include bespoke furniture with original collage artworks applied to their surfaces and one-of-a-kind, site-specific floor and wall treatments, and fabrics.

Ulloo42’s design philosophy also integrates environmental principles. “We love salvaging vintage furniture with interesting shapes and proportions or taking clients’ existing pieces and transforming them through our practice of ‘artcycling,’ which is our version of upcycling,” Abraham says. “Rather than just restoring them, we transform them into distinctive Ulloo42 pieces that reduce waste and create an entirely new look that our clients may never have imagined possible.”

ORIGIN STORY Ceramicist Jonathan Cross is drawn to the natural world, namely forms found in American southwest geology and archaeology. These sources of inspiration are evident in Cross’ Side Tables, which come to life in his Joshua Tree studio using the rammed earth technique. Cross begins by layering and compressing different clays, eventually excavating the desired form from a solid clay block. The figure is left to dry for a month before being loaded into a wood-fired kiln where it is transformed into stone. thefutureperfect.com

“For Lutron, light is energy; light is mood; light is a narrator of time.”
SYMPHONY OF LIGHT When Lutron’s innovative designs are involved, the home is more than just illuminated; it’s reinvented. •T unable lamps and luminaires restore the romance of candlelight and synchronize with the sun to dissolve the boundary between natural and built environments. •W hisper-quiet, automatic shades act as a natural extension to the light control system, balancing access to sunlight with sanctuary from it. •E very system is custom-designed and integrated by an expert to reflect the habits, preferences and personality of the end user, ensuring that whole-home control is more than intuitive—it’s second nature.
WORK WITH NATURE Among Lutron’s top tips is to design with the light, not against it. “Think of moonlight, sunrise, light-filtered green through trees, late-night embers in a dying fire— each moment is a canvas, and light is what soaks that canvas with color and feeling,” the team says. “Blend indoor and outdoor lighting with intention to match your mood and cultivate well-being.”

When interior designer Summer Thornton’s Dallas client asked for a marble primary bath, she took the request to heart, sheathing the space in not one, but three different types: Arabescato Corchia in large-format slabs; Grey Lilac on the sink vanities; and Calacatta Viola for the makeup vanity, casings and windowsills. “It was quite the puzzle to install, but the nuance adds depth and interest,” says the Chicago-based designer. “The accent marbles are powerful, without being jarring. We were drawn to both the lilac shade as well as the Calacatta Viola’s plum tones.” All three stones also make an appearance on the floor, where they are carefully laid out in a “Mondrian-esque
pattern” in conjunction with strategically placed textured metallic tiles. The latter, along with a polished-nickel soaking tub and an antique wall mirror, bring additional light into the space. “There’s only one window, so these reflective surfaces bounce light around the room, making it feel twice as large,” notes Thornton. The metallic fittings and accents were also chosen to help add warmth, which is important in all-stone baths that can sometimes come across as cold. To further encourage an inviting atmosphere, Thornton selected cerused-oak wooden cabinetry and a tactile wicker vanity chair to complete the stunning scheme. summerthorntondesign.com

For the primary bath of a landmarked Tudor residence in Dallas, designer Summer Thornton employed three different types of marble to achieve its dynamic appearance. Hammered German Silver tiles from Paris Ceramics offset marble flooring. The space is outfitted with a polished-nickel tub from Catchpole & Rye, fittings from Waterworks, Murano-glass vanity scones from Jean-Marc Fray and a Vaughan ceiling fixture.

MOODY MOMENT STUDIO LIFE/STYLE
Shannon Wollack and Brittany Zwickl, the duo behind West Hollywood firm Studio Life/Style, approached this Los Angeles powder room with a sophisticated-yet-daring eye. “We knew early on that we wanted to use a stone with lots of movement and color for the custom vanity,” says Zwickl. The designers landed on Calacatta Viola marble, which features burgundy veining that pairs perfectly with a deep green plaster finish on the walls. Below, Zwickl dives into more detail. studio-lifestyle.com What was the inspiration behind the design? A powder room presents the perfect place to have a little fun! We were trying to create something moody with a touch of drama, and a dark color paired with striking stone always works well in small spaces.
Tell us about the wall treatment? A contrasting wall color can help bring out the stone’s natural tones. Here, we chose Portola Paints & Glazes’ Roman Clay in the Lone Park shade, which adds extra depth to the room and plays with the reflection of light. Lindsey Adelman scones and a Gio Ponti−style mirror complete the look.

Is the rest of the home this bold? This is one of the darkest rooms in the house, so it’s a bit of a departure. We like when the powder room serves as a little surprise for guests as they experience the home.

GOING GREEN LUXESOURCE.COM
Statement slabs are one of the most effective ways to transform a space. Therefore, when the owners of this Boise, Idaho, residence called upon designer Jordan Yankovich of KovichCo Interiors to revamp their primary bath, she doubled down on green-hued Scala marble. “This stone has so much personality, with large green pools that the clients loved,” says Yankovich. “Real stone always feels new and fresh because you’re constantly discovering different patterns in the veining.”
Maximizing natural light was important to the scheme, so the designer added a see-through gas fireplace which allows daylight to flow between the bath and bedroom. Copper, nickel, steel, bluestone and oak complement the marble and round out the room’s palette. “The client is a mining engineer, so these finishes are a nod to his profession,” notes Yankovich. “The materials are fancy, but they are used in a way that feels timeless and approachable.” kovichco.com

EASY ELEGANCE
For designer Elizabeth Lawrence, a ground-up guest residence in Southampton provided a unique opportunity to bridge the old with the new. Building upon Georgian-influenced architecture by Michael Dwyer (largely inspired by Frances Elkins’ interiors), and led by her client’s appreciation for antiques, Lawrence began layering palette and pattern to imbue a sense of calm, collected sophistication to
the dwelling, which serves as a year-round getaway. The result reads “a bit like an English country home, but with a Southampton twist,” notes Lawrence. She kept the ethos of-a-place with choice details like subtly coastal paint colors custom-crafted by Donald Kaufman throughout, and a bespoke entry mural by Artgroove depicting the seaside town. “The mix of casual living in a formal setting is what makes this project so interesting,” muses the designer, pointing to the breezy spirit of the open-concept living-dining room—a pleasing contrast to the grand
architectural detailing. A similar dichotomy can be found in the surprising throughlines that lace together collections of wooden antiques, sumptuous, high-pile carpets and historically reverent textiles. Modern artworks and contemporary lighting are hallmarks of the design, and Lawrence’s artful placements— like an enormous Noguchi lantern above the dining table—typify the “Southampton twist” she endeavored to achieve at the outset. “At night, when that’s the only thing lit,” she notes, “it almost looks like the moon is hanging there.” bunnywilliams.com

When a couple’s search for a larger primary residence came up short, they abandoned the idea and turned to landscape architect John Howard to reconceive their existing Buckhead, Georgia, backyard instead. Crowning the greenspace, a potting shed designed by architect William B. Litchfield (an homage to Bunny Mellon’s folly at Oak Spring Farm), underscores the bucolic manner of the newly appointed oasis. Trellising strung with Madison jasmine and climbing roses “serves
as a transitional, unifying moment between the terraced lawn and surrounding woodlands,” notes Howard. In collaboration with Litchfield and interior designer Liza Bryan, he specified bluestone pavers, barnwood paneling and a soapstone sink for flower arranging. Happily, the clients purport to using the shed as a bar and serving area when entertaining, too, treating friends and family to all the charms of a pastoral soiree—from the convenience of Atlanta proper. howarddesignstudio.com

URBAN RESPITE
“We wanted to create a country house in the city,” shares Sara Gilbane of her clients’ Manhattan residence. Taking cues from a prolific collection of antiques and artworks, the designer set about capturing the spirit of the family’s ancestral Pennsylvania farmhouse in their newly purchased downtown apartment, which she transformed from austere white box to characterful flat alongside architect Gerard Beekman. Take the guest room, where, enveloped by a painterly Lewis & Wood wallpaper, Gilbane employed streamlined canopies to “cozy up” antique metal beds dressed in early American quilts. Or the entry hall, where the selection of tumbled stone flooring in a timeless black-and-white check lays the foundation for oil painting gallery walls and millwork painted a chalky hue that feels snatched from a country residence benefitting from centuries of patina. “We live in a world where so much is accessible and, in turn, so much is the same,” muses Gilbane. “That is in part why this ‘old with a twist’ aesthetic is resonating today— it’s just refreshing.” saragilbaneinteriors.com

David Scott
Joy Moyler
Young Huh
David Scott established his namesake firm, David Scott Interiors, with a belief that interiors should reflect the style and personality of their owner—not simply the designer. The natural connection a client has with their home drives each design, resulting in a portfolio of highly personal environments. With almost 30 years of experience, Scott has created diverse and artful designs in an array of styles for numerous clients. Visually stimulating yet supremely functional, Scott’s interiors gracefully meld the timeless elegance of the past with today’s modern aesthetic.
For interior designer Joy Moyler, fashion is a driving force behind her diverse body of work. Textiles, color and pattern seep into her projects, which are punctuated by bespoke details often found in haute couture. She developed a penchant for architecture after visiting Spain as a teenager. Enthralled by the light, color and textures of Madrid and Barcelona, she decided to pursue a Bachelor of Science in architecture. Moyler’s experience spans the globe and encompasses residential, retail, hospitality and commercial projects infused with local culture. Moyler’s portfolio also includes A-list celebrity residences, including Harry Winston’s Beverly Hills home.
A Detroit native, Young Huh received a law degree from Fordham University. While pursuing further education and an internship in interior design, Huh discovered her true calling and founded her New York City-based design firm in 2007. Resetting the design narrative for each project, Huh’s work is about finding harmony and dynamism through the application of classic and modern design principles. Thoughtful architectural details provide the groundwork for warm and welcoming interiors, each animated by sophisticated surface treatments, a singular play of pattern and color, as well as a touch of wanderlust.
Lauren Rottet
Nicole Fuller
Pamela Jaccarino
Lauren Rottet is a highly accomplished architect, interior designer, furniture designer and art curator with an extraordinary record of awards, publications, lectures, juries and honors. She is the founding principal of Rottet Studio, an international interior architecture and design firm, and was the first woman in history to be elevated to Fellow status by both the American Institute of Architects and the International Interior Design Association. She also holds the titles of Interior Design Hall of Fame member, Interiors Designer of the Year, Boutique Design Designer of the Year and Hospitality Design Platinum Circle inductee.
Internationally acclaimed interior designer Nicole Fuller, founder of the eponymous Nicole Fuller Interiors, is renowned for her artfully appointed, one-of-a-kind residential and commercial spaces. Fuller’s work is synonymous with sophisticated, nuanced luxury, where attention to detail, savoir faire and a cultivated eye culminate in spaces that are as unique as her clients. Moreover, she is conversant in a wide range of aesthetics and styles and has an intuitive knack for discerning her clients’ visual needs. Recent and current projects include the Art District Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles and the Baccarat Residences in New York.
A native New Yorker, Pamela Jaccarino is the founding editor in chief of Luxe Interiors + Design, the largest residential architecture and design brand in the country, a position she has held since 2005. Jaccarino has been instrumental in the growth of the brand and continues to champion its fresh vision and evolution. She also frequently lectures on design-related topics. Prior to joining SANDOW in 2002, she was an executive editor with the LVMH Group.

“I embrace the client’s wish list to create the retreat they desire; it’s the best part of what I do.”
LA CASA AZUL DESIGN 844.328.8188 | lacasaazuldesigns.com |

Even after one has become a well-known figure in one’s field, a cementing of reputation can feel like a fresh new chapter. Such is the case for Juaneice Munoz, who has spent the past 10 years building her firm’s style: casual luxury that is simple and clean, with a touch of nostalgia to keep it classic. Indeed, La Casa Azul Design’s clients confirm the success of Munoz’s approach and results. Since moving back to Orange County (where she was born and raised) some years ago, she has become known as the go-to for bespoke yet understated environments. “One of our client’s said she was amazed that her home was ‘the prettiest of Pinterest pictures,’ and we strive to inspire that reaction,” Munoz says. “We stand out because we bring simplicity back! We don’t copy what we see; we create something special. We pride ourselves on thinking of every detail and catering to our clients and their dreams.”

DESIGNER TALK Munoz chats about her goals and pastimes. •W hat legacy do you hope to cultivate through your work? In 20 years, I want to be known for uplifting hearts through design and lifestyle! •G ive us a glimpse of your life “off the clock.” I love movies, especially funny ones, and often post clips of me and my family watching them and laughing. “I am motivated by the desire to share these incredible paintings and sculptures. I can’t imagine a world without art.”
MARKOWICZ FINE ART 949.446.4977 | markowiczfineart.com |
markowiczfineart
While he’s already made a name for himself in the television and film industry, Paul Dahmen is positioning himself as one to keep an eye on for his next venture: Markowicz Fine Art. Originally founded by owner Bernard Markowicz, the gallery now has a presence in Miami, Dallas and, most recently, Orange County. The latter is where Dahmen, who has established himself in the art world for the past 17 years, comes in. As the Orange County gallery’s director, he has become the area’s unequivocal partner in art curation. For him, the appeal was rooted in the same factor that makes Markowicz Fine Art so special for its clients. “I will be able to take my career to the next level because of our expansive reach,” he explains. “Our vision is to make art accessible to all, and Markowicz’s partnership with Bel-Air Fine Art, which has 22 galleries throughout Europe, makes that all the more possible.”
CONNECT THE DOTS “I do not sell art; art sells itself,” Dahmen says. “I cannot make someone like something; I am more of a facilitator. I answer questions and tell people about an artist’s technique, where they are from, etc. I am essentially a ‘connector of dots.’ I connect one dot of what an artist created from their soul to another dot, which is what a collector or designer feels in their soul as they absorb an artwork. It is magical to watch when these dots are connected.”

Asked to share his inspirations, Dahmen says, “There are many art dealers who set the stage for the introduction of contemporary art in 1950s New York. Figures like Leo Castelli, Betty Parsons and others took risks to bring the likes of Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko to the forefront.”

PAYTON ADDISON, CEO AND PRINCIPAL DESIGNER
“My clients deserve 100 percent of my undivided attention, which is what they get every step of the way!”
A FRIEND INDEED
PAYTON ADDISON 949.715.7797 | paytonaddison.com |
paytonaddisoninc
Addison embraces the laid-back Southern California aura by keeping a positive circle of people around her. “The most important thing I ask myself about a prospective client is, ‘are they nice?’ because I only work with nice people,” Addison shares. “Taking this approach means that the entire designbuild process is exciting and fulfilling for everyone involved.” Addison has the same mentality outside of work. The best part of her day? “Five o’clock ‘yappy’ hour in my yard with close friends and neighbors. We let our dogs play while we hang out. It’s a lovely way to end the day.”
When building a new home, one of the greatest obstacles people face is putting together a reliable team. The answer to this dilemma is a skilled design-build firm that can remove challenges and streamline communication. Payton Addison realized this when she founded her namesake interior design firm in 2009. Since then, she has made it her business to be involved in every stage of making her client’s dream home a reality. “Details are important and there isn’t one that I don’t have my creative hands on,” Addison says. “With that in mind, I don’t take on too many projects because I need to be available for the clients I do have.” Addison’s discernment has served her well, with a roster of loyal, repeat clients. “You know you’ve achieved some level of success if your name is mentioned in a professional meeting and several people not only know you personally but have good things to say.”

Catryn Fowler possesses the three most important qualities needed to successfully navigate today’s competitive real estate market: expert negotiation skills, extensive market knowledge and a work ethic that has earned the trust and respect of a broad network of luxury consumers.
A dream does not become reality through magic; it takes diligence, determination and hard work. Fowler recently opened a luxury real estate office in Rancho Santa Fe’s Del Rayo Village Shopping Center. She has been the broker and sales manager for The Villas at Rancho Valencia for the past decade, so she embraces this opportunity to expand her business and provide even higher levels of service. “I am thrilled to have opened the doors to our new office, which is located adjacent to Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa,” she says. “It allows me to stay connected with my past clients and continue to serve the Rancho Santa Fe community, as well as the rest of San Diego County.”
Fowler, the founder and driving force behind the esteemed Rancho Real Estate Group, has worked in nearly every facet of the real estate industry for the past two decades, offering unique insight into the nuances of her trade. Rancho Real Estate Group specializes in a diverse range of real estate transactions, including private gated golf communities, oceanfront properties, luxury high-rise condominiums, resort real estate and land for custom homes. In addition to invaluable connections with luxury brands and clients, Rancho Real Estate Group is affiliated with Compass, the No. 1 luxury brokerage in San Diego County.

“TECHNOLOGY SHOULD SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE, NOT COMPLICATE IT.”
Continuity of technology is a critical component of home renovations. At Modern Home Systems, a San Diego-based company specializing in home automation, designated home theaters and outdoor entertainment centers, the objective of each residential project is to find a solution that fits the homeowner’s lifestyle while incorporating as much of their existing technology as possible. “People come to us to create seamlessness among their technology,” says Otto Benson, president of Modern Home Systems. Intelligent Illumination In constant development, lighting design from a technological perspective is particularly noteworthy. “Lighting control has become a huge part of our industry,” Benson shares. “We have the capability to create scenes with your lighting, whether that be to fit your schedule or for the lights to naturally dim and brighten depending on the actual sunlight coming through the home.”

T
hese are people who really appreciate design and love to collect meaningful pieces,” says designer Denise Kuriger of her clients, a couple for whom she’d previously reimagined a house in Tahoe. Downsizing to a smaller Mediterranean-style home in Rancho Santa Fe, however, called for necessary edits to fit their stockpile of treasured furniture and art—not to mention the addition of a few star pieces to round out the rooms. That wasn’t the homeowners’ only challenge. While the house met their basic requirements— one-level living spaces, the ability to host their five adult sons and their families, and a backyard large enough to install a lap pool—the extensive array of ornate Tuscan-Spanish architectural details gave them pause. The abode didn’t need a makeover so much as a makeunder. “It was too much of a heavy-handed hacienda,” recalls architect Timothy Joslin of his first impression. “A lot of minor refinements, simplifications and subtle manipulations made a big impact and resulted in what’s now a lovely, cohesive home.” In synergistic collaboration with Kuriger, Joslin redid the doors and windows with cleaner, narrow-profile metal systems, raising their headers to bring height and light to the rooms. The primary bedroom’s footprint was expanded to carve out a seating area, the kitchen gutted, and the primary bath reorganized and upgraded with new flooring. Sliding and bifold doors connect the interiors to gracious courtyards and loggias appointed with dining spaces. Even the home’s exterior was treated to a touch-up: builders Paul Munsch and Dan Walter placed an over-grout or “smear” application atop the existing stonework to soften it slightly, “making it look more timeless,” Walter notes. For the interiors, Kuriger freshened the Mediterranean-style setting with a mix of modernist lighting, European antiques and vintage finds, plus some contemporary surprises. “That way, it’s not so one-note,” she comments. “The materials and furniture here feel like a collection that has evolved over several decades.” At Blackman Cruz, she spotted a set of 1960s upholstered Italian chairs—light and dark neutrals, strong graphic shapes—and knew they’d
set the tone for what she calls the home’s “modern Italian” direction. In the bar, they complement blonde-wood built-ins with metal inserts, as well as a multi-armed, cylindrical lighting fixture. Meanwhile, at the end of a hall, a vignette of some of her client’s pieces—an antique chest, curated objets and artwork—are given the spotlight. “One idea I kept in mind as we worked was: Here’s a house with an inherited layer of old European furniture, but punctuated with midcentury pieces and contemporary materials too,” the designer says of her sourcing and styling process. The great room’s palette of rich neutral tones among varying shades of wood and stone is awash with sunlight, courtesy of glass doors that open to courtyards on two sides. Wood makes a statement via a massive late-18th-century armoire shipped from Europe, a highly specific stunner for which Kuriger searched high and low. Yet she cites the floral upholstered armchairs as the room’s whimsical design starting point. “Those are from an early shopping trip in Los Angeles with my client—their fabric inspired a whole color scheme,” she notes. A color scheme that starts with patterned throw pillows and a woven rug, each picking up flecks of the chairs’ chocolate, beige, navy and moss. Variations of this palette continue throughout the house. The kitchen features a marble island facing a white subway tile backsplash and custom metal hood, while a black-and-white laundry room is decked out with cabinetry for storage. The primary bedroom is a softer iteration of the same hues, clad in whites, ivories and steel blue and illuminated by a spare white metal chandelier. It hangs above a new seating area anchored by the couple’s existing chinoiserie armchairs, and offers views of the rear yard and pool. The wife can hardly decide on a favorite aspect of their new house, although the great room ranks high. “It’s a beautiful place to relax,” she enthuses. “When we open up the doors, it feels like you’re sitting outside.” She also notes that despite this residence being smaller than their previous one, its outdoor areas offer more gathering spots—an ideal set up for parties and holidays with their five children and 17 grandchildren. That’s a fitting assessment for a home designed to blend and bridge generations, and proof that downsizing doesn’t mean you have to spare an ounce of grandeur.

From feather-like fixtures to Art Deco-inspired motifs, the spirit of the Roaring Twenties returns with a flourish in this Los Angeles abode.

Interior Design: Lucie Ayres, 22 Interiors
This 1920 home’s entrance hall features standout checkered marble flooring paired with the subtle geometric motif of Schumacher’s Marquetry wallpaper, all in homage to Art Deco style. A gilt-wood mirror by Randy Esada Designs sits above a Kifu Paris shagreen console, completing the moment.
S
tepping into the entrance hall of this renovated Colonial Revival is a compelling reminder that first impressions matter. Inside, a wide pathway of polished checkerboard marble strikes a sophisticated note, seeming to proclaim: “You have arrived.” The entry’s previous hardwood floor read too contemporary to designer Lucie Ayres, but the newly installed black-and-white squares “give this house a formal feel and create a standout moment—exactly as it should have,” she states. That glam factor, palpable throughout this 1920-built home with Art Deco origins, is what had initially captivated her clients. “We wanted to strengthen our home’s connection to that era and architecture without making it feel like a Great Gatsby set,” recalls homeowner Alisha Ranen. She and her husband, Jeff, desired formal yet unfussy interiors that would honor the residence’s heritage while remaining functional enough for their two children aged eight and nine. Tapping Ayres for the project was an easy decision: Having designed the interiors of their prior home, she was already well attuned to their tastes. As Alisha hails from the Bay Area and Jeff is a Massachusetts native, the brief called for a balance between California casual and New England formal—all in the spirit of the Roaring Twenties. With its vertically oriented massing and three slim dormers, the Ranens’ house quietly stands out among historic Windsor Square’s predominantly low-slung Craftsman-style residences. Architect William Hefner had completed a down-to-thestuds renovation for previous owners just a few years before the couple purchased the property. “Everything was high-quality,” Alisha says of the work that had been completed. As a result, they opted not to alter the kitchen beyond fresh paint, and most elements of the bathrooms remained. To channel the 122-year-old home’s glitzy birth decade while aligning with her clients’ sensibilities, Ayres conceived the interiors with tailored exuberance in mind. For example, in addition to the entryway’s checkered flooring, the designer chose a subtle gray-and-white wallpaper with an Art Decoinspired geometric motif, topping it with featherlike ceiling fixtures reminiscent of flappers’ dresses. Such elements nod to the era without crossing the line into kitsch or theme, and establish a strong identity for the foyer while allowing other rooms to have their own distinctive personalities.
And they do. The formal dining room’s original egg-and-dart crown molding and Murano-glass chandelier offered the ideal canvas for a sumptuous scheme—resulting in a space Alisha calls “the Bridgerton room.” There, chinoiserie wallpaper displays an enchanting series of vignettes set against a light blue background, while cyan shantung drapery adds to the room’s jewel box atmosphere. Opposite the dining area is the formal living room, where a playful take on 1920s French and English design showcases a peacockinspired palette. The room’s French Deco-style faux-shagreen-covered coffee table brings in a whimsical touch—as if its ebonized cabriole legs might come to life and comically tiptoe out of the room, leaving swivel chairs and a curved velvetcovered sofa in imaginary conversation. In smaller spaces, Ayres encouraged the Ranens to embrace lush patterns, notably in a powder room and library tucked between the family and living rooms. CW Stockwell’s iconic banana-leaf wallpaper adds panache to the bath, while House of Hackney’s historic Honeysuckle wallcovering establishes the library’s contemplative air. And in the family room, which opens to an eat-in kitchen and backyard, “we pulled some of the colors from other key spaces, but toned everything down,” Ayres explains of the sunlit space in the rear, where the home metaphorically kicks off its heels and removes its feather boa. “It was important for the kitchen and family room to feel cozy,” adds the designer. “We didn’t want either to be overwhelmingly formal or too precious to enjoy.” The skylights upstairs—one of Hefner’s additions—illuminate the stairwell and secondfloor hallway. At one end, the serene primary suite’s cathedral ceiling amplifies natural light. Ayres designed a custom upholstered bed frame and settee, turning to local expert workshops for the task. Sun also pours into a smaller room within the suite which serves as a reading and relaxation space for Alisha. It’s a departure from Jeff’s office down the hall, which is painted Farrow & Ball’s Brinjal, a deep aubergine. These contrasting personal spaces are another example of how the designer synthesized different tastes and needs into a cohesive home that honors the past and is well-adapted to the present. And the homeowners couldn’t be more satisfied. “There was so much collaborative communication with Lucie, we loved working with her,” says Jeff. “And we’ve found that good design makes things functional—not to mention fun,” adds Alisha.

Opposite: Homeowner Alisha Ranen calls the entrance’s Niermann Weeks Calais flush mount a “flapper light” in reference to 1920s feathery dresses. Designer Lucie Ayres extended banisters and railings that previously stopped inside the stairwell, and Jonathan Adler’s Rider chairs add a pop of sapphire.

nstinct guides mixed-media artist Susan Feldman. “I don’t have a plan and I’ve never had one,” she declares of her process. Guided by materials, memories or even a song’s moody lyrics, Los Angeles-based Feldman works intuitively. Layering paint, scrap wood, found objects, plexiglass and ephemera, she creates architectural wall art, installations and freestanding constructions. She often incorporates fragments of older paintings and drawings into her current projects, too. “It’s about moving the past into the present,” the artist explains. Against a palette of brights and darks, Feldman uses heavy pencil lines to make connections between previously unassociated elements. “I love the way pencil looks on wood,” she says, quipping: “I could eat it.” This passion harkens back to the childhood drawings that inspired her parents to enroll her in art classes where she learned other techniques. Later, as a young adult, she joined a record company’s art department. “But after many years, I realized if I didn’t leave to pursue my own art, I would miss my chance and my true love,” she recalls. Feldman’s work is ripe with recurring themes, including imagery of ladders and stairways, which she attributes to another of her inspirations: the stillness of meditation. That feeling of being, in her words, “psychically transported while remaining physically still” infuses the works collected in “Moving Through Matter,” her solo show at L.A.’s Matter Studio Gallery opening July 24. A recent deep dive into the concept of time also led Feldman to construct clock hands and arrows stretching shadows over patterns in graphite and marker. Influenced by the writings of Italian theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli, the artist built Time Machine - Present. Inside this wheeled structure, confetticolored geometric shapes bump against text fragments, rubber bands and springs. Then there’s Time Machine - Past, a warren of artifact-filled cubbies. Peering inside with the attached flashlight reveals yearbook photos and a vintage clock stopped at 4:20. There is no Time Machine - Future, however. “The COVID-19 pandemic proves that nothing happens the way we expect it to,” the artist reflects. “So I don’t know if I’ll ever finish that one—I can’t quite grasp it yet.” She then smiles, adding: “Or maybe it was done years ago… depending on how you look at it.”

ancho Santa Fe is no stranger to Best Places To Live lists. After all, the small town, whose population weighs in at just over 3,000 people, is endowed with a near-perfect climate, a bucolic feel and a wealth of elegant Spanishstyle homes. Like many before them, the owners of this graceful estate came to the area seeking the good life. “The weather is beautiful here; it’s truly a Mediterranean climate in a lovely part of California,” says the wife. When she and her husband relocated from the northern part of the state, they were dreaming of a residence that capitalized on everything the region had to offer. Indoor-outdoor living yearround was an especially enticing option. After weighing the possibility of building from scratch on an empty lot, the couple ultimately decided to remodel an existing home, lured by a lush site dotted with mature trees and plants. Their design team—architect John P. Jensen, designer Susan Spath, general contractor Josh Herbst and landscape architect Steve Ahles—was charged with stripping the house and recreating it as a lightfilled, contemporary abode. That is, one where its residents could easily wander outside to the patio and then down to the pool, or drift toward one of multiple outdoor entertaining areas. “The home had good bones and a dated style,” recalls Jensen. “Now it pays homage to its traditional Spanish-style roots, but is updated for the current times. We kept the skeleton and gave it a new skin.” That’s not to say the skeleton itself didn’t get a major boost. The basement level was sealed off to make way for an expansive patio and, as a result, the now-single-level dwelling is better connected to the backyard. Inside, compartmentalized rooms were replaced by an open floor plan and the ceilings were elevated. The benefits of such a dramatic remodel came with an inherent design danger: brand-new houses
can sometimes read sterile without the benefit of patina. “But,” notes Spath, “everywhere you go in this home, your eyes land on something interesting, or that has a little bit of history.” To wit, the owners brought along a collection of antiques and photographs—including some of the earliest photos ever taken from the late 1800s. “Antiques and vintage pieces give a room warmth and character—they make for an ageless quality,” explains the designer. This is precisely the aesthetic the residents hoped for, and pieces such as a pair of burl-wood commodes and large gilded mirrors deliver it in spades. Various surfaces convey a dose of that mellow luster that comes with age, too. “It starts with the limestone floors,” says Spath. “I also brought in character with an antique fireplace surround and mantel.” These light-colored stones meet with rustic wood floors and ceiling beams, assuring that such appellations as “monotonous” and “expected” do not apply here. Meanwhile, new materials provide a pleasing contrast of their own. “Before the remodel, the windows were small and less minimal,” remembers Jensen. “Adding larger, thinner metal windows and doors gave spaces a lighter feel.” The wife, who says they were striving for a “Santa-Barbara style,” agrees: “In addition to letting in a lot of light, the steel windows add a pop of modern style.” All these elements are united by a serene, collected color palette. “I would describe it as bright, fresh and very relaxing,” says Spath, who used cream, white, spa green and French blue throughout the abode—primarily soft, feel-good hues. Reflecting on these choices, the designer adds: “When you’re in such a bright house, fresh colors add a certain lightness of being.” That very lightness was the whole point. “It’s all about lifestyle. These are elegant people who wanted an understated elegance in their home,” explains Spath. “There are formal notes, but they’re pared down a bit. This is a house that’s more serene and lovely now, and much less stuffy and traditional.”
